- 0:02How can we know that the spiritual force is actually
- 0:05working in us? An actual experience of a force,
- 0:09or what is called a spiritual experience, is a specific,
- 0:14generally short lived event that enormous numbers of people have
- 0:18had. Yet the experience recedes and
- 0:22the daily life goes on, seemingly in its old habitual
- 0:26patterns, with little noticeable change and with the old routines
- 0:31seemingly firmly entrenched. Spiritual literature and
- 0:36scriptural texts from virtually every tradition in the world
- 0:39provide ample evidence of the overwhelming experience and then
- 0:44the let down effect when it withdraws.
- 0:48The dark night of the soul is a recognized phenomenon.
- 0:52Devotees suffer when the object to their love is withdrawn or
- 0:56hidden from them. People struggle with challenges
- 1:00to their faith and the absence of visible signs always in front
- 1:04of them. There are several ways we can
- 1:07know the action of a spiritual force within us, even when it is
- 1:11not overtly felt or acknowledged.
- 1:14It is clear that the instruments of body, life, and mind are
- 1:18severely limited in their ranges of perception, so it is no
- 1:23wonder that much of the action of spiritual forces is not seen
- 1:27or acknowledged. One way, of course, is the
- 1:31actual event or experience that one does get a glimpse or
- 1:34perception about, and potentially a repetition of some
- 1:39similar event from time to time. Another way is to look back at
- 1:45the arc of one's life to see how major radical changes have
- 1:49occurred over time in the way one sees, feels, responds.
- 1:56Most people do not experience this kind of major alteration in
- 2:00their views, reactions, or perceptions about things.
- 2:03So for someone to have such changes take place, it becomes
- 2:08clear that another force is at work.
- 2:13Charles Dickens, in his tale A Christmas Carol, actually
- 2:16illustrates this principle quite clearly.
- 2:20A modern materialistic businessman who cares for no one
- 2:24and nothing other than amassing his wealth, has an experience
- 2:29where he is visited by the ghost of his former partner and then
- 2:33has visitation from ghosts who show him successively past,
- 2:38present and future. He is shaken by the experience
- 2:43and when he awakens from the dream state he was in during the
- 2:46experience, he is a changed man who takes care to help and care
- 2:52about others. Who could have imagined a more
- 2:55radical transformation inhabit an action than what we see here?
- 3:01The visitation by ghosts is a frequent theme in Western
- 3:05literature about how forces have changed outcomes.
- 3:08It also occurs frequently in the works of William Shakespeare,
- 3:12for instance, what the actual forces at work are.
- 3:17Whether ghosts or simply a transcription of some spiritual
- 3:21force in imagery that is common in a particular cultural
- 3:24background cannot obviously be immediately determined without
- 3:30more detailed understanding of specific cases.
- 3:34However, the changes are radical and transformative and provide
- 3:39the signs of a new spiritual energy and insight at work in
- 3:43the being. Many who have such a
- 3:47transformative experience do not have such a radical overnight
- 3:50change, but tend to grow into it over a period of time.
- 3:55Looking back at one's feelings, thoughts, responses and
- 4:00reactions of the past and what they are now can usually provide
- 4:04clear evidence of a force at work to bring about a change of
- 4:09consciousness and put that change of consciousness into
- 4:13action, Srioro Bindu observes. Quote.
- 4:18The fact that you don't feel a force does not prove that it is
- 4:22not there. The steam engine does not feel a
- 4:25force moving it, but the force is there.
- 4:29A man is not a steam engine. He is very little better, for he
- 4:34is conscious only of some bubbling on the surface which he
- 4:37calls himself, and is absolutely unconscious of all the
- 4:43subconscious, subliminal, super conscient forces moving him.
- 4:49This is a fact which is being more and more established by
- 4:52modern psychology, though it has got hold only of the lower force
- 4:57and not the higher, so you must not turn up your rational nose
- 5:01at it. He twitters intellectually
- 5:04foolishly, about the surface results and attributes them all
- 5:09to his noble self, ignoring the fact that his noble self is
- 5:13hidden far away from his own view, behind the veil of his
- 5:17dimly sparkling intellect and the reeking fog of his vital
- 5:22feelings, emotions, impulses, sensations and impressions.
- 5:28So your argument is utterly absurd and futile.
- 5:32Our aim is to bring the secret forces out and unwalled into the
- 5:37open, so that instead of getting some shadows or lightnings of
- 5:41themselves out through the veil, or being wholly obstructed, they
- 5:46may pour down and flow in rivers.
- 5:49But to expect that all at once is a presumptuous demand which
- 5:53shows an impatient ignorance and inexperience.
- 5:57If they begin to trickle at first, that is enough to justify
- 6:02the faith in a future downpour. You admit that you once or twice
- 6:07felt a force coming down. It proves that the force was and
- 6:12is there and at work, and it is only your sweating herculean
- 6:16labor that prevents you feeling it.
- 6:19Also, it is the trickle that gives the assurance of the
- 6:23possibility of the downpour. One has only to go on and by
- 6:27one's patience deserve the downpour or else without
- 6:31deserving, slide on until 1 gets it.
- 6:35In yoga, the experience itself is a promise and foretaste.
- 6:41But get shut off till the nature is ready for the fulfillment.
- 6:45This is a phenomenon familiar to every Yogi when he looks back on
- 6:49his past experience. Such were the brief visitations
- 6:53of Ananda you had sometimes before.
- 6:56It does not matter if you have not a Leech like tenacity.
- 7:01Leeches are not the only type of yogi's.
- 7:04If you can stick anyhow or get stuck, that is sufficient.
