- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30OK, this morning I'm going to be teaching from second
- 0:33hesitations, and that's in chapter 5.
- 0:36And you can you will not be able to find second hesitation in the
- 0:40index of your Bible because it's not existent.
- 0:44I hesitate to say it. OK, we are in Second Timothy
- 0:48chapter 2, so if you're new to your Bible, use that index in
- 0:52the front of your Bible and find the page in your Bible where
- 0:55Second Timothy shows up. Go to Chapter 2 because our text
- 1:00is going to be from verses one to seven.
- 1:03In chapter 2 this morning, Pastor Ed invited me to teach
- 1:09one of the four exhortations this month with the topic of
- 1:13Have it All, which is a reference of pouring out
- 1:16everything in our life to the Lord, opening up all the doors,
- 1:20everything, holding nothing back to the Lord.
- 1:23Because we trust him, We don't have to fear him in the sense
- 1:27that he's going to do evil to us.
- 1:29We have to trust him with who he is, focusing on his character as
- 1:34he's revealed himself to be in Scripture.
- 1:37And so 2024 can be a year that's full of anxiety for you because
- 1:43when you came through 2023, you look like you just been ran over
- 1:48by a Mack truck, and so you're worried about 2024 and what's
- 1:52this going to hold? But listen, God is there
- 1:55already, and your focus has to be on him, not on the
- 2:00circumstance or the potential or trying to figure it out.
- 2:04It has to be on him. Because you see, he wants to
- 2:08calm the storm in your heart before he calms the storm
- 2:11outwardly. And so if you're waiting for him
- 2:14to calm the storm first, outwardly, before you'll give
- 2:17your life to him, man, you've got the cart before the horse
- 2:22because you'll never have an experience, that peace of God
- 2:26until you let him do all that he wants to do in your life.
- 2:31And that. And that's just a word for some
- 2:33of you who are just so full of anxiety over what's ahead.
- 2:37Could be a health issue, could be the finances, could be your
- 2:41children or your marriage, could be your job situation.
- 2:44There's going to be layoffs. What are we going to do?
- 2:46The yada, yada, yada. And.
- 2:47And your mind is just going crazy.
- 2:49Stop it. Slow down.
- 2:52Get your eyes back on the Lord. We're going to talk about that
- 2:55today. Pastor Ed started the month with
- 2:59a study called Live with Loyalty.
- 3:01Loyalty to the Lord, not having a divided heart toward him.
- 3:05One foot in the world, one foot in the Kingdom.
- 3:08And then his second study last week was called Live with Total
- 3:12Commitment to the Lord. And so as you make those
- 3:15commitments, yes, there will be trials and challenges and tests
- 3:20that test your commitment, but the grace of God will be with
- 3:23you to help you carry through the commitment that you make.
- 3:29And so today, what I want to do is take the third part of this
- 3:34and and call it living with strength through.
- 3:38And that comes from our text in Second Timothy, Chapter 2, which
- 3:42we'll see. And as we look at these 7
- 3:45verses, Chapter one, excuse me, verse one becomes a foundation
- 3:51for the five exhortations that Paul will give to Timothy.
- 3:55And remember, this is Paul's last letter.
- 3:59He knows when he writes this to Timothy that in a few weeks he's
- 4:04going to lose his head literally.
- 4:08Because as a Roman citizen, they were never crucified, but as a
- 4:14Roman citizen who committed capital crimes, they were taken
- 4:18outside the city and beheaded. And so Paul's Paul knows that,
- 4:24you know, at the end of the day, the Lord is in charge of it all.
- 4:26And it was a difficult, but when you read the letter, you don't
- 4:30see him whining and complaining of how wrong it all is.
- 4:35He's focused because he knows where he's going, he knows what
- 4:40the Lord has done and he knows what's ahead.
- 4:45And that's that's got to be our focus as well.
- 4:48We can get so distracted. So I'm going to divide these 7
- 4:52verses into 6 sections and I'll talk about them as we go through
- 4:57it. Those of you taking notes, the
- 4:59head of your note needs to be living with strength through
- 5:03grace. And then you can write down each
- 5:06of these six sub headings here. But just open your heart, not
- 5:11just your pen. Open your heart to what God may
- 5:15want to speak to you about, because he knows you're here and
- 5:18this random old guy is here talking to you.
- 5:21And God wants to use this text to reach you because He loves
- 5:26you, He cares for you. So I'm going to read verses one
- 5:30through 7. We'll start with prayer and
- 5:32we'll launch into this second Timothy 2 verse.
- 5:36One. You therefore my son.
- 5:39Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus and the things
- 5:45that you have heard from me among many witnesses.
- 5:49Commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others
- 5:54also. You therefore must endure
- 5:59hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
- 6:04No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the
- 6:08affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him
- 6:14as a soldier and also if anyone competes in athletics he is not
- 6:20crowned unless he competes according to the rules.
- 6:25The hard working farmer must be first to partake of the crops.
- 6:30Consider what I say and may the Lord give you understanding in
- 6:35all things. Let's pray our Father in Heaven,
- 6:42we're asking that you by the Holy Spirit would use this text
- 6:46this morning in our hearts, in our lives.
- 6:50And we ask God that you would reason with us.
- 6:55You know how we process our world.
- 6:57You know our habits. You know the things that trip us
- 7:01up. You know the ways the enemy
- 7:03tries to get us distracted. And you are more powerful than
- 7:08all that. And you want to give us your
- 7:11strength to pursue, to carry through, to do what's right
- 7:18until the very end. And so, Lord, speak to us this
- 7:22morning as we open your word in Jesus name.
- 7:26Amen. Amen.
- 7:29OK, let's start with Roman numeral one.
- 7:31And we're going to call it grace that brings continuous strength.
- 7:36Grace that brings continuous strength.
- 7:38You therefore, my son be strong in the grace that is in Christ
- 7:43Jesus. Of course we know that Paul is
- 7:45writing to Timothy, his son in the faith.
- 7:48Timothy there is overseeing the churches there in Ephesus.
- 7:52Paul is in prison in Rome. But as we read this I want us
- 7:58also go beyond this and understand this is the word of
- 8:02the Lord to us. This is as if Jesus is talking
- 8:06to us and he's using this. Put your name in there.
- 8:10You therefore my son, Bob. You therefore my son or my
- 8:15daughter? Be strong in the grace that is
- 8:18in Christ Jesus. That is true right this second,
- 8:22just as true as it was with Timothy and his exhortation.
- 8:27Be strong is a choice to be made on Timothy's part, because he
- 8:32could just ignore and going, wow, you're just an old man,
- 8:35you're going to die soon. No, no, no, He took it
- 8:37seriously. There's a command here.
- 8:40As a matter of fact, the word in the Greek is a command for be
- 8:44strong, and it is in the verb tense called present imperative,
- 8:50which means a command to do something in the future which
- 8:55involves continuous or repeated action.
- 8:59We see that is is not a one time be strong.
- 9:03OK, I was strong. Now what?
- 9:05No, no, no. It's it's every single day,
- 9:08every moment. Lord, I need your strength.
- 9:11Regularly. Continuously.
- 9:14Not continually, but continuously.
- 9:18Which is a constant action, the present imperative.
- 9:23One familiar example for those of us that are believers in here
- 9:27is found in Ephesians 518 where Paul tells the Ephesian church
- 9:33don't be drunk with wine in which is dissipation, but be
- 9:37filled with the Holy Spirit and the word be filled is in the
- 9:42present imperative meaning be continuously filled.
- 9:47Keep on being filled because he pours us out and we need to be
- 9:52filled with him so that he can pour out into the lives of
- 9:57others. But then also do not be drunk
- 10:01with wine. Be be not not drunk is also in
- 10:05that present imperative where which is refers to you.
- 10:08You go back and back and back to the alcohol to try to deal with
- 10:13all the pressures and the the the anxiety and everything and
- 10:18it's an outside source to try to calm the storm inside.
- 10:23But listen, only God can calm the storm inside and he wants to
- 10:28give life. Notice that Paul put being
- 10:31drunk, which is where your blood alcohol level reaches a certain
- 10:35state of saturation which affects your life.
- 10:38And it affects it in a dissipation, which means it
- 10:42starts falling apart. But be filled with the spirit is
- 10:47put parallel, which means a saturation with him because that
- 10:54when the Holy Spirit saturates your life, there's life, he
- 10:59says. You'll end up speaking to
- 11:01yourselves in psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, singing and
- 11:05making melody in your hearts to the Lord, giving thanks always
- 11:09for all things. I mean, how is that a bad thing?
- 11:12I mean that's that's like life instead of just trying to cover
- 11:19the pressure with an outside source and then it when it all
- 11:22leaks out. Sorry about that illustration.
- 11:25When it's all out, you're in worse shape and you have to go
- 11:32back again and the Lord says, man, I want to give you life.
- 11:38Present imperative condition be being filled and here in the
- 11:43exhortation it's as if Paul is saying Timothy keep on being
- 11:49empowered as a regular life experience in Christ Jesus no
- 11:54matter what life has to offer. It reminds me of the strength to
- 11:59strength exhortation we see in Psalm 84 and this section here
- 12:05I'm ready to. I'm developing a Bible study
- 12:08separately out of it. Psalm 84, verses 5 through 7.
- 12:12Blessed is the man whose strength is in you, whose heart
- 12:19is set on pilgrimage. Now this of course, speaks to
- 12:23the Hebrew people that three times a year they made their
- 12:27their walk, their journey up to Jerusalem, to the temple, to
- 12:30attend the three feasts there in the temple.
- 12:34But our pilgrimage is in the heavenly Zion.
- 12:37We're not going to church. This is not a thing saying, OK,
- 12:40Our pilgrimage is to go to church on the weekend.
- 12:43Dude, that's not the context here.
- 12:45Our heavenly Zion, according to Hebrews, is is the heavenly
- 12:49Jerusalem. And because we want to be where
- 12:52he is, that's our goal. Our life on this planet is a
- 12:56pilgrimage. As a believer to be with Jesus,
- 13:02whose heart is set on pilgrimage, that means it or it
- 13:06it affects everything you do during your pilgrimage.
- 13:09Because that's my goal and you keep your eye on the goal and it
- 13:14adjusts everything that you deal with here in this life, Verse 6
- 13:19of this Psalm 84 says as they pass through the valley of Baja.
- 13:24Now Baja means in Hebrew weeping because frankly there are times
- 13:30in our pilgrimage where there's there's brokenness and our
- 13:35hearts break and and we begin to to weep because of of the
- 13:41sadness or the difficulty. But even in the midst of passing
- 13:46through that valley we can have a spring because that's what it
- 13:50says. They make it a spring because
- 13:53it's it's it's like an artesian well on the inside when the Holy
- 13:57Spirit fills your life. And man, we so need that.
- 14:03Especially in this year of 2024, because people are going to let
- 14:08you down. People are going to lie to you,
- 14:10People are going to try to take advantage of you.
- 14:13And there's all of that potential.
- 14:15But you want, you know what? I draw my life from a source of
- 14:21life that's ever bubbling up in the Holy Spirit.
- 14:28It says here, the rain also covers it with pools.
- 14:30That's from the outside. God brings times of blessing.
- 14:34They go from strength to strength.
- 14:36Each one appears before God and Zion.
- 14:38Strength to strength means that there are seasons of strength,
- 14:44which implies there are seasons when you feel absolutely without
- 14:50strength. And that's where you draw upon
- 14:52the Lord. To say God, you have to be my
- 14:55strength. There is strength in you in the
- 14:58grace that's in Christ Jesus. That's a foundational Kingdom
- 15:01truth, and that's the basis of his of his exhortations here.
- 15:07But the grace that is in Christ Jesus, what does Paul mean by
- 15:11grace? It's the Greek word charis.
- 15:14And I looked up in Thayer's Greek definitions to give you a
- 15:19technical definition of grace so you can have it.
- 15:22So we're going to leave it up on the screen for a while because
- 15:25it's technical. Those of you that are writing,
- 15:27good luck. OK, here it goes.
- 15:30Grace. Thayer's Greek definitions.
- 15:34The merciful kindness by which God exerting his holy influence
- 15:40upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens,
- 15:47increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and
- 15:54Kindles them to the exercise of Christian virtues.
- 15:58Technical definition. But the grace of God, His favor,
- 16:05His kindness. I mean, those of you that are
- 16:09believers in here, think back on the fact that God actually
- 16:14pursued you. He chased you down, He blocked
- 16:19your way, He knew the war that was in your heart against him,
- 16:25and yet he still pursued you. That's called grace and love.
- 16:32And how did that grace come? Strength.
- 16:35Dunamis is the Greek word power. Keep on being empowered in the
- 16:41strength that's there in Christ. Roman numeral 2.
- 16:46This is the second part, verse 2 Grace that produces gospel
- 16:49teachers and the things that you have heard from me among many
- 16:54witnesses. Commit these things to faithful
- 16:57men who'll be able to teach others.
- 16:59Also. Verse one be strong in this
- 17:04grace in the strength. Be strong in the grace that's in
- 17:07Christ Jesus is foundational for this first exhortation.
- 17:11Why did Paul put this first? Because they were living in a
- 17:15time when the gospel truths were being attacked by every
- 17:19philosophy on the earth and people were coming into these
- 17:23small house churches there in the 1st century and bringing a a
- 17:28gospel or a a so-called good news that was corrupting the
- 17:33truths, the basic truths of the gospel.
- 17:37And I want to tell you that the gospel, the biblical gospel of
- 17:41Jesus Christ is unique among all the religions of the world.
- 17:46Cause all the religions of the world, when you examine them are
- 17:50all based upon self effort to work yourself into a better
- 17:54state. But Christianity is the only
- 17:58religion. Religion where the God who has
- 18:01been offended by the sins of man and has wrath determined upon
- 18:06those sins himself, provides himself to take his own wrath,
- 18:13to take our sin upon himself through his Son and offer His
- 18:19Holiness and righteousness as an exchange, exchange for our sin
- 18:25and all the realities of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 18:29I mean, you can take the Bible and reinterpret the words like
- 18:32some religions do right now. It's not the true gospel.
- 18:39You have to leave it alone. Paul addresses it in the first
- 18:41chapter of the book of Galatians.
- 18:44It's not another gospel. It's a perversion of the truths
- 18:48of the true gospel. And so this exhortation is find
- 18:53men who will hold fast the pattern of sound words, and
- 18:58that's chapter one, verse 13. When you find them, commit these
- 19:05gospel truths to faithful men who will be able to teach
- 19:08others. The word commit means to deposit
- 19:13or to be an investment. And we all know what that's
- 19:18about in this day of trying to make solid investments for the
- 19:21future and setting up your retirement and all that, and the
- 19:24Bitcoin and the different other ways you can spread out your net
- 19:28worth and all. But but you know, sometimes you
- 19:31get so wrapped up in investing for the physical future you have
- 19:35neglected to invest for the spiritual future.
- 19:40Jesus commanded us to lay up treasure in heaven where the
- 19:45whole thing doesn't go belly up like it can in this life.
- 19:49It's not. Then investing in this life is
- 19:51wrong. It's just that we so trust in it
- 19:54and we get our eyes off of the Lord.
- 19:56And sometimes it's to the neglect of our families.
- 20:00And we're saying, well, you know, I'm, I'm developing for
- 20:03their future, but you haven't invested into your kids the
- 20:07truths of the gospel. Well, I don't want to change
- 20:09them. I don't want to influence them.
- 20:11Where do you get that from? That's not in here.
- 20:14As a matter of fact, cover to cover, It's like invest in your
- 20:17children. It's your responsibility as a
- 20:20parent. Yeah, but what if they don't
- 20:22hear? We'll pray for them.
- 20:25Sorry, That chokes me up. Yeah, pray for them.
- 20:29That's at least you can do. That's investment.
- 20:32That's a deposit. You're asking God to send
- 20:37intercontinental ballistic missiles, bam, into their life
- 20:41through prayer. Because they're not listening to
- 20:43you. They just roll their eyes and go
- 20:45whatever, you know and and it's like, come on, stop that and and
- 20:49you just love them. Keep your heart right to
- 20:52minister them. Yeah.
- 20:53But you don't know how they've hurt me.
- 20:55You don't know how wavered they are.
- 20:57You don't know how painful it is.
- 20:59Yes, I do. My, our, our youngest son had
- 21:03that season. And I know those feelings and I
- 21:07know that sense of of hopelessness and out of control
- 21:11and unable to change it, That's where you got to hide yourself
- 21:16in the sovereignty of God and his love and truth care for
- 21:19them. And now my son, you know, he's
- 21:22walking with the Lord tight. Praise God.
- 21:26But it was. And now he's got kids.
- 21:28He's got a train and and they're going through the same things
- 21:31that he was going through. And he he keeps telling me, Dad,
- 21:34I'm so sorry. I I don't realize it was going
- 21:37to be this hard. I'm so sorry.
- 21:39I'm going. Yeah.
- 21:40Yeah. I wanted to.
- 21:43I wanted to do some damage to you, actually.
- 21:46So anyway, invest. Commit these truths.
- 21:53To faithful men, Discipleship is super important.
- 21:58Don't let the truths of the gospel die out.
- 22:02Commit them. That was the word to Timothy,
- 22:05but it's also the word to us. Know what you believe, and in
- 22:09love and in grace, commit those things as a deposit into the
- 22:13next generation. Let's go on #3.
- 22:17Grace that leads to endurance. Roman numeral 3 verse 3.
- 22:22Look at Look at this verse closely.
- 22:24You therefore the word therefore based is based on verse one.
- 22:32You therefore because you have strength.
- 22:35Timothy that's in the grace that's in Christ Jesus.
- 22:39You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of
- 22:45Jesus Christ. Look at the word must circle it.
- 22:52It implies no alternatives. You must do it, not think about
- 23:01maybe toying with it if you if you so feel like it would be
- 23:05good. No, no, you must do this,
- 23:08Timothy. It's a non.
- 23:11It's it's a non. Negotiable.
- 23:14It's not an option. And the Greek word Paul used for
- 23:17endure hardship, includes the idea of enduring hardship along
- 23:23with me. So it's not just Timothy.
- 23:26You're on your own. It's Timothy.
- 23:28We're in this together in this war.
- 23:32Endure it along with me. But I want you to hear the Lord
- 23:35Jesus speaking to us, saying endure hardship along with me.
- 23:41I suffered for your sins. I want you to and fellowship
- 23:48with me and that suffering, that's what Paul says in
- 23:51Philippians. I want to know the fellowship is
- 23:54suffering. So I want to know experientially
- 23:56what that is, because there's grace and there's life on that
- 24:01comes along with it. And I want to taste and see that
- 24:05the Lord is good, endure along with me.
- 24:09The Greek word is cacopatheo, which reminds me of kaol pectate
- 24:14for some reason. But but cacopatheo, for those of
- 24:17you that are interested, and Thayer's Greek definitions,
- 24:20gives that definition as to suffer or endure evils,
- 24:25hardships, troubles to be afflicted.
- 24:28Wait a minute. I didn't sign up for that.
- 24:30You know, I I want my sins forgiven.
- 24:32But come on now I've I've already had a hard life.
- 24:34I want things easy. I'm sorry you got on the wrong
- 24:37bus. Because Jesus said in the world
- 24:42you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer, for I have
- 24:48overcome the world. In me you will have peace.
- 24:53In the world you will have tribulation.
- 24:56But be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.
- 25:01As difficult as life can be, and by the way, there are believers
- 25:06right now suffering, being tortured in prisons around the
- 25:09world for their faith. Nobody knows about them.
- 25:14They've been given false charges to be a cover for persecuting
- 25:19them, and they're going through it And and the pressure is to
- 25:22give up their friends who are meeting or their leaders and
- 25:25all. And they're going through
- 25:27heinous treatment, saying I am going to be faithful to the Lord
- 25:32no matter what, even if they take my life, God give me
- 25:38strength and grace to make it through the beating.
- 25:44And that's the truth. That's the reality of what's
- 25:47going on right now. And we got all weird because we
- 25:51wake up and we go, Oh my goodness, I got a flat tire.
- 25:54God, how could you allow this to happen to me?
- 25:56I mean really, just perspective. We have to get it back.
- 26:05Timothy endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ
- 26:09because we are in a spiritual warfare.
- 26:13When you come to Christ, all of a sudden you're a soldier,
- 26:18you're in the battle. If physical armed forces have
- 26:22the capacity to endure this hardness, then how much more can
- 26:26we endure the hardness that comes in life through the
- 26:31strength that comes available through the grace that's in
- 26:34Christ Jesus? That's, that's the gist here of
- 26:37this whole section. To Timothy and to us, Jesus is
- 26:43our commander in chief, and he has given us different counsel
- 26:46based on how the Father has been toward us.
- 26:49In Matthew 543 through 45, Jesus said this.
- 26:54You have heard that it was said you shall love your neighbor and
- 26:58hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your
- 27:03enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate
- 27:10you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute
- 27:16you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
- 27:20For he makes his son rise on the evil and on the good and sends
- 27:24rain on the just and on the unjust.
- 27:29How do you love your enemy when everything in you wants to
- 27:33retaliate? How dare them?
- 27:36I can't believe it. That's so wrong.
- 27:38That's unjust. That's unfair.
- 27:40I'm going to teach them that you know and and your and your mind
- 27:44just goes wild and it stirs up the emotions.
- 27:48And your nostrils are big, like a snorting horse, man.
- 27:51Because you're so upset. Don't even get around you.
- 27:57And here's Jesus saying bless those who curse you.
- 28:00Yeah, I'll bless them all right. You know, I'll bless them with.
- 28:03I mean, I mean, come on, dude. Here's, here's the truth.
- 28:07You cannot do this on your own. I can't love my enemy on my own
- 28:16because everything on my own wants to retaliate and give.
- 28:20Oh, yeah, you give me 5. I'll see you 10.
- 28:24But Jesus is saying, here's what I want to do in you so I can
- 28:29work through you. I want to give you my love so
- 28:35that you can love them even though it has been a curse on
- 28:42you, even though they have spitefully used you and
- 28:47slandered you. That kind of love only comes
- 28:52from heaven and it comes with the Holy Spirit because the
- 28:57fruit of the Spirit is what love, God's love.
- 29:01I cannot manufacture that kind of love in my life.
- 29:07So when someone has done you evil and there's this sense of
- 29:11of retaliation and and has gotten you wound up, you got to
- 29:17go to the Lord saying this is a light on the dashboard.
- 29:21Speaking of driving, when all kinds of thoughts come as you
- 29:26drive through the Denver area. OK, enough said.
- 29:35And that's when it's like the light on the dash, you know, You
- 29:37know that it's annoying on a cold morning when when all of a
- 29:40sudden the like low air on the tire comes in and it's going,
- 29:43no, no, really, come on, it's just cold.
- 29:47Well, that's there for a reason. And the Lord speaks to us in
- 29:52times of are being wound up. And he says, men, you're low on
- 29:57oil, the oil of the Holy Spirit. And so you need to just say look
- 30:03what I've done with you. Look how I loved you when you
- 30:06were so unfair to me. Look how I pursued you when I
- 30:12shouldn't have pursued you at all.
- 30:16And and it's just perspective. God, give me your love so it
- 30:21will change my life on how I deal with others.
- 30:26Because my my purpose, my goal is to reflect to the world
- 30:31around me what you look like, what your love looks like.
- 30:36And that's why he said love your enemies and do good.
- 30:42Bless, pray for it may take a while.
- 30:50I'm just saying, it's not like, OK, I'm over it.
- 30:55No, you're not over it. You're over it right this second
- 30:58until the thought comes back up and you can sense this bile
- 31:02coming up in your in your throat.
- 31:04When their memory comes to your mind, you're not over it.
- 31:08And God has to heal your heart. He wants to heal the wound so he
- 31:14can use you, let him heal you. But some of you don't want to be
- 31:20healed because it was so unfair. If God, if you heal me, no one
- 31:23will know. Please let him heal your heart.
- 31:33Let's go on #4 grace that keeps focus.
- 31:38No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the
- 31:41affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him
- 31:44as a soldier again. This exhortation is based upon
- 31:48verse one, the strength that's available through the grace
- 31:53that's in Christ Jesus. And notice the words in warfare,
- 31:59because there are soldiers who are in the barracks resting.
- 32:03They're not in warfare, but when you're out in the midst of of
- 32:08confronting the enemy, you've got to watch out for IE DS.
- 32:12You got to watch out for incoming armament and and and I
- 32:18mean you are in warfare. It's a whole different mindset.
- 32:22And Paul is telling Timothy here, listen, as a Roman soldier
- 32:28is engaged in warfare, he can't allow himself to be entangled or
- 32:35distracted, because if he loses focus, it's going to endanger
- 32:41not only him, but the rest of his troop and his platoon.
- 32:45You've got to have each other's back.
- 32:48You've got to keep focus. And that's the exhortation to
- 32:52Timothy here. But it's an exhortation to us.
- 32:55How do we lose our focus? We get distracted sometimes.
- 33:01The distractions are innocent things.
- 33:03They're not. They're not sinful things, but
- 33:05they're just things that end up consuming volumes of time.
- 33:10And pretty soon you realize you haven't had a time with the Lord
- 33:13for several days or even weeks, Because after all, you've got to
- 33:17do this. Why?
- 33:19It's kind of an addiction and you get used to doing this and
- 33:22you want to do it because I just want to conquer that game or I
- 33:26just, I just want to be involved there.
- 33:28I just want to find a, you know, a new set of clothing or I just
- 33:32want those special boots and and it just consumes you.
- 33:36It becomes a distraction. Not that they're bad in and of
- 33:40themselves, but look how much time and look how much of A
- 33:45distraction it's become to you and you got to pull back.
- 33:52But there are some entanglements that are actually sin, and
- 33:58you've gotten involved maybe in a relationship with someone
- 34:01else. And now you're involved in
- 34:02sexual sin, you're involved in lying, you're involved in
- 34:07hiding, you're involved in compromise.
- 34:09You're one way in front of other believers and another way in
- 34:12secret. I mean, what is happening in
- 34:14your life? How did that start fear?
- 34:19Fear that you might lose that person if you were straight with
- 34:23them, if you told them the truth.
- 34:27That's a that's a sandy foundation that won't hold up in
- 34:30your life. These aren't in my notes, but
- 34:34I'm just, it's on my heart to say the word entangle means to
- 34:39become involved in difficulties or complicated circumstances
- 34:44from which it is difficult to escape.
- 34:48Have you ever come to anybody and said how's your relationship
- 34:51going? And they say it's complicated.
- 34:54That's means they're entangled because you know, an affair
- 34:59starts, first of all emotionally before it ever happens
- 35:03physically. And God wants you to put a guard
- 35:07on your heart and think clearly and don't let the world be the
- 35:12influence in your life, but let the Holy Spirit and trust in Him
- 35:16be the influence in your life. The word entangled only occurs 2
- 35:22times in the New Testament here and in Second Peter.
- 35:26Second Peter chapter 2, verse 20 says for if after they have
- 35:30escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of
- 35:34the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled
- 35:40in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the
- 35:46beginning. If the Holy Spirit brings things
- 35:50to your mind and heart and you realize that you have become
- 35:53entangled, maybe distracted with a non sin issue or a sinful
- 35:59issue, it's time now to say I need the strength that's
- 36:04available in in Christ through His grace to turn away from that
- 36:11entanglement to take the the the weeds that have blocked my way
- 36:16also reminds me of Hebrews 12. Let's run the race with
- 36:21endurance, laying aside every sin, every weight in the sin
- 36:27which so easily ensnares us. Let's look to Jesus, the author
- 36:34and finisher of our faith, You know, keeping focus.
- 36:40Most of you have a a cell phone. You take pictures with that
- 36:45phone and you got to keep it in focus.
- 36:48You have to, you know, work it so that you know, the picture
- 36:51comes out crystal clear. Sometimes you can be looking
- 36:54right at the object and you're out of focus.
- 36:58And you know, the really the truth is we can be looking at
- 37:02our relationship with Jesus, but we're out of focus.
- 37:07How do we get out of focus? We've gotten distracted.
- 37:12A focus means that you take and you you hone in, you sharpen it.
- 37:18When you're listening to Grace FM 9089.7, if you're on 89.5,
- 37:24you're going to get OK you're out of focus.
- 37:30You got to take that silly dial and bring it one more notch to
- 37:3589.7 and then it comes through clear.
- 37:40Same thing with our relationship with the Lord.
- 37:42Don't just do religious things because you're not in focus.
- 37:46Focus is just not about religion.
- 37:48It's about him. Does that make sense?
- 37:52It's not about the things you do.
- 37:54It's about him. Focus on him.
- 37:58Keep the focus that comes from the strength that's in Christ
- 38:01Jesus #5 Grace that encourages obedience and also if anyone
- 38:08competes in athletics he is not crowned unless he competes
- 38:11according to the rules. And this focus is is obedience.
- 38:16Those athletes in the Olympic Games spend time honing their
- 38:22skills in their particular sport.
- 38:25A person who does shot put in the field games has to
- 38:30strengthen certain muscles and certain movements and certain
- 38:34timing to be able to get that that that heavy iron ball out to
- 38:39where it needs to be. But a person running a marathon
- 38:43doesn't encourage those big muscles.
- 38:47Can you see a big guy, you know, trying to run a marathon?
- 38:50OK, he's great for shot put, but he stinks at a marathon.
- 38:54OK, well, he's not trained for that.
- 38:57If if athletes can do it in discipline, believers through
- 39:03the strength that's provided can do it as well.
- 39:06What are the rules of the game for us?
- 39:09The rule of the Kingdom comes down to one thing.
- 39:13God's love in you and through you because all that you find in
- 39:19the in the New Testament is is connected to that Kingdom law,
- 39:24the law of love in Christ. For 2024 may we be filled with
- 39:31the love of God and have our focus on Jesus and not just
- 39:35religious activities. Amen.
- 39:39Finally number six, grace to continue to labor verses 6 and
- 39:44seven, the hard working farmer must be first to partake of the
- 39:49crops. Consider what I say and may the
- 39:51Lord give you understanding in all things.
- 39:56I want you to realize that hard working is different than
- 40:00enduring hardship because it's there are different Greek words
- 40:05and it's a different context. Enduring hardship has to do and
- 40:10verse three has to do with things that come against you,
- 40:15the hard working farmer. Working hard has to do with the
- 40:20condition and the necessity of the case.
- 40:23A farmer. Is one of the most hard working
- 40:27men and women that you'll find because they just can't take
- 40:33their ease. They have to continually work.
- 40:37You know the herd of bessies that are waiting to be milk
- 40:41aren't going to be milking themselves.
- 40:43You know, they they have to do the hard things.
- 40:46Why do they do the hard things? Because unless they do it,
- 40:49there's no reward at the end. And so in the Christian life, in
- 40:54the context, the Christian life is going to include hard work.
- 40:59I'm sorry, that's not the Western culture mindset of ease,
- 41:04convenience and comfort. It's going to be hard work.
- 41:09Obeying the Lord is going to end up being hard work, doing the
- 41:13right things, when it's going to potentially cause wrong things
- 41:18to happen in your life by other people.
- 41:22You have to do the right things and walk with integrity before
- 41:25the Lord, and there are times it's going to be hard.
- 41:30We must, through much tribulation, enter the Kingdom
- 41:32of God, Paul says to the churches there in his first
- 41:36missionary journey. Hard working, to feel fatigue,
- 41:45to toil, to be wearied. Some of you are ready to give up
- 41:50praying on your wayward kids because it's been so hard and so
- 41:54painful and God is saying to you, the hard working farmer
- 42:00must be first to taste the first fruits.
- 42:04I've got a reward for you at the end.
- 42:06Do what's right even though your hard work you don't see any
- 42:11result because your reward comes at the end.
- 42:17The reward comes with Jesus when he returns.
- 42:20When He comes for us. Well, what about blessings?
- 42:24Aren't blessings the reward? No blessings or distribution of
- 42:28his grace. The reward comes at the end
- 42:33because you can work hard and do what's right and end up not
- 42:37receiving any proof of the effect because it's treasure in
- 42:45heaven, not on earth. For the reward when Jesus with
- 42:51his own voice will say to us, well done.
- 42:56He's not British either. You know the Brits say well done
- 42:59all the time, but he says well done, good and faithful servant.
- 43:06You have been faithful over a few things.
- 43:11I want you to rule with me and my Kingdom.
- 43:14Men are into the joy of your Lord.
- 43:20Do the hard work in 2024 through the strength that's in the grace
- 43:26that's in Christ Jesus, Not on your own strength.
- 43:29Lord, I can't do this. Be honest with him.
- 43:31Tell him. Philippians chapter 2 verses 12
- 43:35and 13 says, Therefore my beloved, as you have always
- 43:39obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my
- 43:42absence, work out your own salvation with fear and
- 43:46trembling. For it is God who works in you
- 43:50both to will and to do for his good pleasure.
- 43:53Working out your own salvation doesn't mean you're working for
- 43:57salvation, it means that you are living out what God has put into
- 44:02you. And how does that happen?
- 44:05Because God works in you to with your willingness and the
- 44:10strength to carry it out is how this verse is is telling us.
- 44:15And finally in verse 7 consider what I say now the word consider
- 44:21is also in that present imperative form which means a
- 44:24command to do something in the future which has continuous and
- 44:31repetitive action. Keep considering.
- 44:35Don't let it slip your mind. Endure hardship.
- 44:38Keep focused. Obey implicitly.
- 44:42Do the labor all based on the ongoing strength that's yours.
- 44:47From the grace that's in Christ Jesus great section.
- 44:51Let's close with the word of prayer.
- 44:54Our Father in heaven. We thank you this morning for
- 44:56your word and there may have been a moment here and there
- 45:02where there's something has pierced our heart and and we've
- 45:06sensed you your fingerprint on our soul and and saying this
- 45:10needs to be straightened out. And Lord we thank you for your
- 45:15kindness in getting our attention.
- 45:19But as we pray, Lord, we also realize there could be some who
- 45:23are listening online or here in the sanctuary or downstairs or
- 45:27listening on Grace FM even. And as they think about their
- 45:32life, they've never really surrendered their life to the
- 45:36Son of God, Jesus Christ. And only can that strength be
- 45:42yours when you have taken that step and you are in Christ
- 45:46Jesus. If this happens to be your state
- 45:51right now, there's a remedy for that simply by asking.
- 45:58And how do you do that? You come to the Lord and you
- 46:02say, God. I admit I've been at war with
- 46:05you, and I I believe that if Jesus died for my sins, then my
- 46:14sins will be forgiven completely.
- 46:18And the gospel tells us that that's true.
- 46:24And you stand ready to forgive me of all the sin of my life, if
- 46:28I will believe on the Son of God, Jesus Christ.
- 46:32And so right now I turn over my life to you, God.
- 46:38I ask you to forgive me of all the sins of my life.
- 46:42I repent of those sins, and I turn to you.
- 46:46Fill me now with the Spirit of God and make yourself real to
- 46:50me. Make your home in my heart this
- 46:55morning. If this is your heart and your
- 46:57desire, let's solidify that. Let's make it done once for all
- 47:03time as we continue to pray. If this is you, at the end of
- 47:11our time of worship here, please come forward and communicate
- 47:15with the prayer partners and the pastors who will be up here to
- 47:18receive you. And let's get this settled in
- 47:21your life and God. We want to thank you for your
- 47:25word this morning and help us take these things You've been
- 47:28speaking to us and go forward for 2024.
- 47:33In Jesus name, Amen. We.
