Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome back to the Intel with Greg Cosell. On
- 0:10Speaker 1: Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher with Adam kaplanan of
- 0:13Speaker 1: course we have with us Greg Cosell as he continues
- 0:16Speaker 1: to break down prospects for the twenty twenty six NFL Draft,
- 0:20Speaker 1: And in this episode we're breaking down tight ends. A
- 0:24Speaker 1: very interesting group of tight ends, you know, Greg, last
- 0:27Speaker 1: year we described it as top heavy, right, you had
- 0:29Speaker 1: your Colston Lovelin, you had your Tyler Warren. You had
- 0:32Speaker 1: a couple of guys going in the second round, like
- 0:34Speaker 1: your Mason Taylor's and your Tyler Fannons, the kid from Oregon.
- 0:39Speaker 1: This year seems to be a lot of interesting opinion
- 0:42Speaker 1: about the overall tight end class. What do you think.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think it's really good in terms of guys who
- 0:47Speaker 2: are going to play in the league. I think you
- 0:49Speaker 2: got Kenyan Sadik, Who's he's a playmaker. He's you know,
- 0:53Speaker 2: it's almost like and it gets into a larger discussion
- 0:56Speaker 2: about how you draft guys, you know, quote unquote positional
- 0:59Speaker 2: value for playmakers. You know, it's the same conversation people
- 1:02Speaker 2: are having about Jeremiah Love, who we talked about last week.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Kenyan Sadik. It's the same guy. He's an explosive playmaker
- 1:09Speaker 2: who's not just a quote unquote tight end. So do
- 1:13Speaker 2: you go with the old school, Oh well, you never
- 1:15Speaker 2: draft a tight end high although that kind of went
- 1:16Speaker 2: by the boards last year that picks. I guess twelve
- 1:19Speaker 2: and fourteen or eleven and fourteen with Warren and Lovelin,
- 1:22Speaker 2: and we sow what Loveland did down the second half
- 1:24Speaker 2: of the season. I mean, a guy you could do
- 1:26Speaker 2: anything with. Kenyan Sadiq is the same guy. You know. Now,
- 1:30Speaker 2: you're not drafting Kenyan Sadiq to be the big time
- 1:33Speaker 2: blocker in your run game. And by the way, he
- 1:35Speaker 2: gives effort. He needs a lot of work at it,
- 1:37Speaker 2: but he gives a lot of effort and he does
- 1:38Speaker 2: make some good blocks, particularly on the move. You know,
- 1:42Speaker 2: but he's two forty one, so he's not necessarily going
- 1:45Speaker 2: to you know, shove guys back. But he works at
- 1:47Speaker 2: it and he's not a terrible blocker. But you're dealing
- 1:52Speaker 2: you're dealing with a weapon. Now, you know, you're dealing
- 1:54Speaker 2: with a guy like Lovelin who can work all three
- 1:57Speaker 2: levels of the field and be a big time factor
- 2:00Speaker 2: slash playmaker in your pass game, all.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Right, since we started with him, how does he block?
- 2:05Speaker 3: I just said, you know, but okay, but he'll make
- 2:08Speaker 3: the effort. Because what happens is Evan Ingram right in
- 2:11Speaker 3: the twenty seventeen draft, right, it's a first round pick,
- 2:15Speaker 3: and people call him a glorified receiver. I understand he's
- 2:17Speaker 3: still We'll see what happens with him this year, but
- 2:20Speaker 3: he's played a long time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: He's also moved on a little bit.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And you know, you worry about guys when they're not
- 2:27Speaker 3: six four to fifty to fifty five.
- 2:30Speaker 2: You worry about is it? Yeah? And look he was.
- 2:34Speaker 2: He executed multiple run blocking concepts and techniques pretty effectively.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Be does he need to play with consistent, you know,
- 2:42Speaker 2: more consistent overall technique when he's attached. Sometimes he would
- 2:46Speaker 2: get too high with a wide base and he couldn't sustain.
- 2:50Speaker 2: But he was pretty good blocking on the move. You know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: they ran some pinpull concepts and he really had some
- 2:56Speaker 2: good blocks when he got out in front, and he
- 2:59Speaker 2: did a really good job in that regard. But I mean,
- 3:03Speaker 2: you're dealing with an outstanding athlete. He's got vice gript hands,
- 3:06Speaker 2: he's got straight line speed, he's got run after catch.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I mean he's a playmaker, that's what he is.
- 3:13Speaker 1: The last guy, I think the highest guy was Kyle
- 3:15Speaker 1: Pitts right to get he was a top five pick,
- 3:18Speaker 1: the top ten.
- 3:20Speaker 2: He was picked four, I believe, Yeah, I think he was. Yeah.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So how would you compare Sadiq coming out to Pitts cover.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because Pits has not become what most
- 3:29Speaker 2: people expected or hopecore. But there are some similarities in
- 3:34Speaker 2: the way they play because you know, I mean, Sadiq's
- 3:37Speaker 2: probably a little straight line linear, but he certainly can run,
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know. And uh and like I said, I mean
- 3:45Speaker 2: he works at all three levels, no problem at all.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I mean, he can get in and out of breaks.
- 3:50Speaker 2: He creates separation, he creates vertical separation. He can run
- 3:54Speaker 2: away from safeties in man coverage. He's especially a factor
- 3:57Speaker 2: in the red zone. Run the vertical seam from this,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you know, from the slot he can run slot fades.
- 4:05Speaker 2: You know, he's got run after catch. You know, he's
- 4:09Speaker 2: like I said, you're dealing with a guy that's that's
- 4:11Speaker 2: a a an offensive weapon.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Oh, dub.
- 4:20Speaker 2: There's a ton of guy. I mean, there's a ton
- 4:22Speaker 2: of guys who are really good prospects in different ways.
- 4:26Speaker 2: You know. I think Eli Stowers is a really good receiver,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know, and I think you have to understand when
- 4:31Speaker 2: you draft him what he is. He's a receiver. He's
- 4:34Speaker 2: a movement guy. He's not an in line attached guy.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So you're not drafting him saying you know, well he
- 4:39Speaker 2: can't block, Well, you're not drafting him to do that,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, if you draft him, I mean, you know
- 4:44Speaker 2: that's that's he's He's really athletic. I believe he was
- 4:49Speaker 2: a was a quarter but he went to college initially
- 4:51Speaker 2: years ago, like five years ago as a quarterback and
- 4:55Speaker 2: got you know, transitioned to tight end. So you're dealing
- 4:57Speaker 2: with a guy that he's very athletic. He's not a blocker,
- 5:01Speaker 2: but you can detach him. He can run routes. Another
- 5:03Speaker 2: guy that can attack all three levels. You know. That's
- 5:06Speaker 2: that's who he is.
- 5:08Speaker 1: So if he's if he's just really a pass catcher, though,
- 5:11Speaker 1: is he more like do you is he good enough
- 5:13Speaker 1: to be a Trey McBride type or is he Mike
- 5:15Speaker 1: Ja said he was just gonna go in there on
- 5:17Speaker 1: passing downs and be your your pass catching tight end.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Well, now you start getting into the NFL, Jeff, And
- 5:24Speaker 2: you know, are you a team that plays a lot
- 5:26Speaker 2: out of twelve personnel? You're gonna play out of thirteen personnel,
- 5:28Speaker 2: you're gonna play out of eleven personnel? How are you
- 5:32Speaker 2: gonna play? You know?
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess I'm just saying, like, does he have
- 5:35Speaker 1: a little bit of a limited floor in your mind
- 5:37Speaker 1: because he's really just a pass catcher? Or is he
- 5:40Speaker 1: such a freak of nature he can be like the
- 5:43Speaker 1: kid McBride where he can just catch.
- 5:45Speaker 2: No, I don't know if he's McBride because I think
- 5:47Speaker 2: McBride can you know, you can play him in a
- 5:49Speaker 2: more traditional tight end role as well. You know, I'm
- 5:52Speaker 2: not sure Stours is that guy. You know? And again,
- 5:55Speaker 2: think of what the Rams did with Terrence Ferguson this year. Now,
- 5:58Speaker 2: granted he's not like he caught seventy balls. He was
- 6:00Speaker 2: a rookie and he was hurt of it. So we'll
- 6:02Speaker 2: see what happens going forward. But Ferguson, you know, and
- 6:06Speaker 2: I learned from a coach years ago, sometimes you can
- 6:08Speaker 2: just teach these guys to be good enough blockers. Does
- 6:11Speaker 2: he have to be you know, an unbelievable bock player.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I mean, there's a guy at Stanford, Sam Rousch. He's
- 6:16Speaker 2: you know, you know, Sam rous is an extension of
- 6:19Speaker 2: the offensive line. He's a dominant run blocker and he's
- 6:23Speaker 2: a pretty good receiver too. So you know, again, you
- 6:26Speaker 2: don't draft Sam Roush and expect to deploy him in
- 6:29Speaker 2: the same way you're going to deploy Stours or Kenyon Sadie.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Quite frankly, but depending on how you play offense, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 2: Sam Rouch could work exceptionally. I mean, look at the
- 6:39Speaker 2: Seahawks AJ Bonner this year, I believe played over eighty
- 6:44Speaker 2: percent of its snaps as an attached tight end. Okay,
- 6:48Speaker 2: if that's the kind of offense you run, a run
- 6:50Speaker 2: you know, and I'm not saying he's gonna get drafted
- 6:52Speaker 2: by the Raiders now that kubeks with the Raiders, But
- 6:54Speaker 2: if that's the kind of offense you want to run,
- 6:57Speaker 2: and that's foundationally how you play offense, Sam Roush is
- 7:00Speaker 2: a really good player for you, m Greg, A guy
- 7:04Speaker 2: that played a two Big Ten schools. That's uh.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Max Claire is the kind that I've heard a lot of. Yeah,
- 7:12Speaker 3: I'm just interested in what he also declared early. It's
- 7:15Speaker 3: Max Claire out of Ohio State tell us about him.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yeah, Max Claire is pretty athletic guy. I mean that's
- 7:20Speaker 2: you know, uh, and I think, you know, ultimately, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 2: that's to me, that's his calling card. I think that
- 7:27Speaker 2: he's very smooth as a route runner. You know, I
- 7:31Speaker 2: watched him at Purdue last year too, so uh, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 2: he's a guy that that. I would say his athleticism
- 7:37Speaker 2: is higher level at the tight end position. I think
- 7:39Speaker 2: he's got the movement and receiving trades he could he
- 7:42Speaker 2: could line up as your boundary acts at times as
- 7:44Speaker 2: tight ends, sometimes doing what we call one by three
- 7:47Speaker 2: sets where they line up as the single receiver on
- 7:50Speaker 2: the back side of trips. I think he's got the
- 7:53Speaker 2: alignment versatility with the desired trades to un that are
- 7:56Speaker 2: demanded to line up both attached and detached in addition
- 8:00Speaker 2: to being deployed as a motion guy. I mean, I
- 8:03Speaker 2: think he's he's to me, a really good prospect. And
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think another guy who's very similar in that regard
- 8:09Speaker 2: and probably a better blocker is Oscar Delp from Georgia,
- 8:12Speaker 2: who I really liked on tape. And you know, sometimes
- 8:15Speaker 2: in these college offenses, guys, as you well know, tight
- 8:19Speaker 2: ends don't necessarily catch a lot of balls. I mean,
- 8:21Speaker 2: you can go back to George Kittle, who caught twenty
- 8:23Speaker 2: and twenty two balls in his last two years at Iowa,
- 8:26Speaker 2: and you know, comes in the league and he's been
- 8:27Speaker 2: pretty good. You know, he could be a Hall of Famer,
- 8:30Speaker 2: you know. And I think I'm not saying Oscar Delp
- 8:31Speaker 2: is George Kittle, but I'm saying Oscar Delp there's so
- 8:34Speaker 2: much more to his game when you look at his
- 8:37Speaker 2: projection and transition to the NFL than he showed at
- 8:42Speaker 2: Georgia because they didn't throw them the ball. You know,
- 8:44Speaker 2: we didn't have eighty targets, you know, so he only
- 8:47Speaker 2: caught what, I don't know, twenty four whatever the number was.
- 8:49Speaker 2: It wasn't a lot. But you watch his tape and
- 8:52Speaker 2: you come away thinking, you know what, this guy has
- 8:54Speaker 2: really good traits. He's athletic, he can run, he can block,
- 8:58Speaker 2: you know. You know, you start getting into who's the
- 9:01Speaker 2: number one tight end, who's the number two tight end,
- 9:04Speaker 2: which gets back to the same point. You know we
- 9:05Speaker 2: spoke about a moment ago, Jeff. What are teams play?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Do they play a lot of twelve personnel, are they
- 9:10Speaker 2: gonna play more thirteen personnel? Who's going to be your
- 9:13Speaker 2: tight end when you're an eleven personnel? You know it?
- 9:15Speaker 2: You know it's there's so many factors that are involved
- 9:18Speaker 2: here because there's not you know, Kenyan Sadik is the
- 9:22Speaker 2: freak of this group, but after that, you know, there's
- 9:25Speaker 2: a lot of guys who are real. This is a
- 9:26Speaker 2: deep tight end class in terms of good players. These
- 9:29Speaker 2: guys are all going to play in the league, by
- 9:31Speaker 2: the way, and then they're probably all gonna be drafted.
- 9:34Speaker 2: You know, I don't know where, but they're all going
- 9:36Speaker 2: to be drafted. And and you know, then it depends
- 9:39Speaker 2: on team.
- 9:40Speaker 1: What is your your evel on? Michael Trigg from Baylor.
- 9:43Speaker 2: He's another interesting guy. He's he's more of a receiver
- 9:47Speaker 2: than anything else. So I think, you know, when you
- 9:50Speaker 2: watch him, you think, okay, receiver. You know, he's there
- 9:54Speaker 2: are a couple of guys like that. I think there's
- 9:56Speaker 2: there's Michael Trigg and then there's daykon Wright from All
- 10:00Speaker 2: miss You know, Trigg moves like a big wide receiver.
- 10:04Speaker 2: He's he can he's a three level dimension, you know,
- 10:07Speaker 2: both inside outside, he can create separation. He can win
- 10:11Speaker 2: versus both men and underneath his own defenders. He's got
- 10:14Speaker 2: power and competitiveness. Run after catch. Now, he predominantly at
- 10:19Speaker 2: Baylor this year lined up detached from the formation and
- 10:23Speaker 2: you know, and uh and in wing alignments that almost
- 10:25Speaker 2: always allow allowed him to get free access. And you know,
- 10:29Speaker 2: guys like that need that. You know, he's probably not
- 10:32Speaker 2: truly an attached player where you know he's gonna have
- 10:35Speaker 2: to fight through to get off the ball. You know,
- 10:37Speaker 2: he's only two forty, but he's got tremendous arm length
- 10:40Speaker 2: and wingspan. And then you're dealing with Dakwon Wright, a
- 10:43Speaker 2: guy that I basically you know, knew nothing about put
- 10:46Speaker 2: on the tape and I'm like, wow, this guy moves
- 10:48Speaker 2: really really well. You know another guy that is you know,
- 10:51Speaker 2: I'm really curious to see how he's seen in the
- 10:53Speaker 2: NFL because there's a lot there with Daikwon Wright, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 2: so you know, he lined up in the backfield at
- 11:00Speaker 2: times too, so that enhances his NFL profile. So you know,
- 11:04Speaker 2: there's a lot of guys that there's even you know,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I actually watched this kid from Utah named Dalen Bentley
- 11:11Speaker 2: who kind of reminded me of Dawson Knox when I
- 11:14Speaker 2: finished watching him. And Knox is not a number one obviously,
- 11:17Speaker 2: but you know what, Dawson Knox just signed a three
- 11:19Speaker 2: year deal. He's going to play in the league if
- 11:21Speaker 2: he wants to do for twelve years. You know, there's
- 11:23Speaker 2: a lot of those kinds of tight ends in this draft.
- 11:26Speaker 3: By the way, Michael Trigg great Land thirty four in
- 11:29Speaker 3: a quarter in Charms and his wins fan is ridiculous.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Eighty fourth race let's tackle. Yeah, yeah, I mean, you know,
- 11:36Speaker 2: there's so many. You know, That's why I wanted to
- 11:38Speaker 2: mention that Sam Rash from Stanford, because some team is
- 11:41Speaker 2: going to look at him that plays with the attached
- 11:44Speaker 2: tight end and runs the ball and wants to have
- 11:46Speaker 2: a strong side run game, and they're gonna go, you
- 11:48Speaker 2: know what this And he's not a terrible receiver by
- 11:50Speaker 2: any means. By that. In fact, if you look at
- 11:53Speaker 2: Sam Rouch and to pull it up if you want,
- 11:54Speaker 2: if you look at Sam Rouch, what he did the
- 11:56Speaker 2: combine that really enhanced his profile for the Inner fell
- 12:00Speaker 2: but he grew up the combine from real perspective, all right,
- 12:04Speaker 2: Sam l six sixty six, Okay, sixty seven. He's got
- 12:08Speaker 2: great size.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Uh not, he doesn't have the armuane that you want
- 12:12Speaker 3: a tight end, that'll hurt him. But on Greg's point,
- 12:14Speaker 3: he we're on a four to seven for his size
- 12:17Speaker 3: at four seven four, he's pretty good.
- 12:18Speaker 2: And then look it wasn't his vertical really good too?
- 12:22Speaker 2: Raush's vertical. Let me see if he did it. Let
- 12:26Speaker 2: me see his athletic testing was good, actually pretty good. Yeah,
- 12:30Speaker 2: for his size, thirty eight and a half is pretty good,
- 12:32Speaker 2: really good. Yeah. So I mean, you know, tight end
- 12:37Speaker 2: is a really interesting position now in the NFL, guys,
- 12:39Speaker 2: as you know, I mean, you know we've seen Look,
- 12:42Speaker 2: we've seen that with the Eagles, you know, and I mean,
- 12:44Speaker 2: you know, different kinds of tight ends. You know, it
- 12:46Speaker 2: depends on you know, we know Grand Calcutara is not
- 12:49Speaker 2: a great you know, in line blocker. Yeah, but first
- 12:52Speaker 2: of all, he didn't do that in college, So you're
- 12:54Speaker 2: not drafting him to do that now. Obviously the Eagles
- 12:56Speaker 2: at some point you have to do it a little bit.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I mean, you know, so obviously. But I remember having
- 13:02Speaker 2: a great conversation with a coach who coached Tony Gonzalez,
- 13:06Speaker 2: and he said, when he came out of college at
- 13:08Speaker 2: cal He said he didn't have a block at all.
- 13:10Speaker 2: He said he was a basketball player, he was an athlete.
- 13:13Speaker 2: He said, we told him had a block, and you
- 13:14Speaker 2: know what, was he the best blocker you've ever seen?
- 13:16Speaker 2: He said, no, But you know what, he could get
- 13:18Speaker 2: it done. He could block people. You can teach guys
- 13:21Speaker 2: how all these block people. You know, they're not going
- 13:24Speaker 2: to be the best blocker there is, but they can
- 13:25Speaker 2: block people. Sure.
- 13:27Speaker 1: I just can't believe we've gone through all these tight
- 13:29Speaker 1: ends and not one of them is from Iowa or
- 13:31Speaker 1: Penn State.
- 13:32Speaker 2: That is definitely an I know, isn't that crazy?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Notre Dame also produces some tight ends, did you well?
- 13:38Speaker 2: They got one this year in the draft who I
- 13:39Speaker 2: did not see yet. So Eli rare and I think
- 13:41Speaker 2: it is I've not evaluated him yet, but.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Hey, if you're like me, you're desensitized to the dozens

- 16:01Speaker 1: made for Philly fans. Twenty one and up.
- 16:03Speaker 2: The guy that intrigued me the most was the guy
- 16:05Speaker 2: I meant to was Oscar delp I think that there's
- 16:08Speaker 2: a guy that, depending on where he goes, could really,
- 16:11Speaker 2: you know, develop into a volume tight end player. You know,
- 16:15Speaker 2: don't forget Sam Laporta did not catch ninety balls at Iowa.
- 16:18Speaker 2: I mean, obviously got hurt this past year. But you know,
- 16:21Speaker 2: I think Oscar delp is I don't want to say
- 16:24Speaker 2: they're exactly the same player, but I watching delp I
- 16:28Speaker 2: thought of Laporta.
- 16:30Speaker 3: This is a much deeper group draft, by the way,
- 16:32Speaker 3: really deep, way deeper than I mean.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Ohio State has another guy, he's a blocking guy, Kesmeric
- 16:37Speaker 1: who'll probably go like Greg said, he'll get drafted.
- 16:40Speaker 2: He'll play, gets drafted. I mean, he might get drafted
- 16:42Speaker 2: the sixth round. But it depends on the team. You know,
- 16:45Speaker 2: Brent Selig was what a fit what fifth? Or Si
- 16:49Speaker 2: was a fifth? He was a fifth? Yeah you see, yeah, yeah, yeah, yep.
- 16:54Speaker 1: And then of course there's always like big ten guys.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You know, there's a Michigan guy that's in the Penn
- 16:57Speaker 1: State does have a guy, Cleil Dinkins, who can block
- 17:00Speaker 1: a little bit, so he'll probably maybe you'll he'll get
- 17:02Speaker 1: a Day three Look.
- 17:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's it's a really deep class guy. Like
- 17:06Speaker 2: I said, these guys are gonna play in the league.
- 17:08Speaker 2: What they do in terms of receiving, which is all
- 17:10Speaker 2: we think about. You know, most people we don't know,
- 17:12Speaker 2: but they're gonna they're gonna play in the league.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Great, awesome, all right. That is our look at tight
- 17:18Speaker 1: ends as we continue to go around to every single
- 17:20Speaker 1: position and get Greg's tape breakdown. That's gonna do it
- 17:24Speaker 1: for this episode of The Intel with Greg Cosell. For
- 17:28Speaker 1: Greg co Sell and Adam Kaplan, I'm Jeff Mosher. Catch
- 17:31Speaker 1: you all on the next one.
