Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Chelsea Zealand's ordering thousands more vapes to help smokers quit.
- 0:03Speaker 1: They say the pilot programs that they've already done have
- 0:06Speaker 1: helped more than four thousand. Kiwis ditched the Darries in
- 0:09Speaker 1: just six months. Doctor Buzz Burrow is gp altra cheer.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Good morning, Buzz, Good morning Ryan. Good to have you
- 0:17Speaker 1: on the show. Is this a good thing? I mean,
- 0:18Speaker 1: we've better off vaping than we are smoking, that's what
- 0:21Speaker 1: we're told.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Well, it's a good question, and your opening line is
- 0:25Speaker 2: not incorrect. We are better off vaping than smoking. However,
- 0:28Speaker 2: we're better off not doing anything than vaping. And I
- 0:31Speaker 2: think that's where GPR is disappointed. We believe that the
- 0:35Speaker 2: government and two and whoever's in between them almost misleading
- 0:40Speaker 2: the public on the apparent success of this initiative. It's
- 0:44Speaker 2: not as successful as it looks. It's almost like saying, look,
- 0:48Speaker 2: it's better to drive a little bit drunk than very drunk.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's a step in the right direction, but it's certainly
- 0:55Speaker 2: not as good as that making it out to be.
- 0:58Speaker 2: It's just give you some idea of how we believe
- 1:00Speaker 2: it's been a mislead. I work at a Southalkland General practice.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And only last week I saw a teenager pick up
- 1:06Speaker 2: one of the two leaflets saying babe, and he said, look, Mama,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I told you they're safe, and that's the message getting across.
- 1:14Speaker 2: They're not safe. And we wish there was just a
- 1:18Speaker 2: little bit more honestly behind the data.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So you're just saying it's a branding thing. Really by
- 1:24Speaker 1: making it telling people it's lest bared the hearing it's healthy.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Yeah, perfectly worded. And moreover, we're replacing one addiction with
- 1:33Speaker 2: another addiction, which is not safe. If you think about
- 1:37Speaker 2: the science, it is very clever. Whoever invented the idea
- 1:40Speaker 2: of inhaling a substance got it right. If you're addicted
- 1:44Speaker 2: to something, you swallow it, your brain gets it hit
- 1:46Speaker 2: in about twenty minutes. If you intravenously injected, your brain
- 1:49Speaker 2: gets it hit in about sixty seconds. But if you
- 1:52Speaker 2: inhale it, your brain gets that hit in fifteen to
- 1:54Speaker 2: twenty seconds. That cycle, that addictive cycle, I wanted. I
- 1:58Speaker 2: got it. That was great. There's no fast way of
- 2:00Speaker 2: rewarding that than inhaling something. So someone's used inhaling tobacco
- 2:05Speaker 2: and getting a hit. If we're giving them a vape
- 2:07Speaker 2: they're going to get the.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Same because what do they do then? What are they
- 2:10Speaker 1: damned if they do? Damed if they don't, do they
- 2:11Speaker 1: just not order these things? Or do they need to
- 2:13Speaker 1: say here, you know, put up a skull and crossbone
- 2:16Speaker 1: on it.
- 2:17Speaker 2: In In fact, well look it up. Until about eighteen
- 2:20Speaker 2: months ago, that's what we had and the entire medical
- 2:23Speaker 2: profession was a gas at this current government reversed the
- 2:26Speaker 2: smoking legislation and that was really everybody thought, a step
- 2:31Speaker 2: in the completely wrong direction, which to see why it's
- 2:33Speaker 2: fiscally driven, but that actually is unhelpful in the long term.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So yeah, I think the answer is, I'll be honest,
- 2:39Speaker 2: the eighty percent of people are still vaping when they've
- 2:43Speaker 2: officially quit. Twelve months later. The UK did a study
- 2:48Speaker 2: and worked out that two thirds of people who said
- 2:50Speaker 2: they'd quit by tato vaping, two thirds were still vaping
- 2:54Speaker 2: five years after they've given up. And this stuff is
- 2:56Speaker 2: not safe. There are there's lung conditions, there's a cardy
- 3:00Speaker 2: of asking for conditions. This is this is not a
- 3:02Speaker 2: safe alternative from.
- 3:03Speaker 1: One bad thing to another. Doctor Buzz Burrow with us
