Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Well, I invited you here. Gonta made myself perfectly clear.
- 0:17Speaker 1: When you're a guest to my home, you gotta come
- 0:22Speaker 1: to me empty. And I said, no guests, you're o presences, presents,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and I already too much stuff.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So how do you dare to surbey me?
- 0:48Speaker 3: Welcome to I said, no gifts. I'm Richer Wineker. We're here.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I'm on top of the world.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I started the morning by walking through a spider's web
- 0:58Speaker 3: and poisoning myself with caffeine. What's going on? Those were
- 1:03Speaker 3: the two big events. I went to work. Now I'm
- 1:07Speaker 3: here podcasting, and I watched last night, I watched Dead Files.
- 1:14Speaker 3: We all know what Dead Files is. It's a ghost
- 1:17Speaker 3: hunting reality show from the tens, the teens, the twenty tens.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:24Speaker 3: What I learned was that the Family Tree in Santaquin, Utah,
- 1:27Speaker 3: unfortunately has closed, the restaurant that everybody hated, haunted by
- 1:32Speaker 3: hundreds of ghosts.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It's gone.
- 1:34Speaker 3: They're no longer serving their disgusting chicken fried steak ririp.
- 1:39Speaker 3: So that is essentially my life, my full, vibrant life,
- 1:46Speaker 3: kind of reporting back to you as you begged me
- 1:50Speaker 3: to do. I think that's about it. Patreon dot com
- 1:54Speaker 3: slash I said, no gifts, come on over, support the podcast,
- 1:58Speaker 3: enjoy some bonus episode odes, all kinds of things come
- 2:02Speaker 3: on over. But let's get into the podcast. I absolutely
- 2:05Speaker 3: love today's guest. It's Joel Kim Booster. Joelo, welcome back
- 2:09Speaker 3: to I said.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I thank you so much.
- 2:12Speaker 4: I cannot relate to your story more. And by storia,
- 2:18Speaker 4: I mean having absolutely nothing that anyone would be interested
- 2:24Speaker 4: in hearing about happening to you, because that's been I
- 2:26Speaker 4: don't know, this whole year has been has felt so strange.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Just days will go by and I'll just be like,
- 2:33Speaker 3: nothing has really changed in my life. It doesn't feel
- 2:36Speaker 3: like there's you know, there'll be especially earlier this year,
- 2:39Speaker 3: there will be weeks where I just be like, oh
- 2:41Speaker 3: there was. I might as well just have stayed in
- 2:45Speaker 3: January first. Yeah, just totally fine.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Might as well just stay in Lockdown. Honestly, the way
- 2:50Speaker 2: things are going for me right now.
- 2:53Speaker 3: The last time you were on the podcast was Deep Lockdown.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Yes it was, And I remember there was like some
- 2:58Speaker 3: issue where our former producer had like fallen asleep on
- 3:03Speaker 3: the job.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Wow.
- 3:04Speaker 4: See, I don't remember any issues. I remember it being
- 3:07Speaker 4: a lovely time. I don't remember the issues.
- 3:10Speaker 3: I mean, that's the difference between you and I. I
- 3:11Speaker 3: focus on the negative, right, And I'm fortunately Stephen Ray Morris,
- 3:16Speaker 3: former producer, is nowhere near the podcast anymore. But there
- 3:21Speaker 3: was something where I was like it was one of
- 3:23Speaker 3: those things where we were all learning how to do
- 3:25Speaker 3: all of this in a new type of environment.
- 3:28Speaker 4: And we were talking before we started too about just
- 3:30Speaker 4: how used to be the lowest lift.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Part of your professional life.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yes, doing a podcast could not have been easier, could
- 3:37Speaker 4: not have been lower effort, and yet here we are
- 3:41Speaker 4: in this designed studio, like production designers came in and said,
- 3:46Speaker 4: this is the vibe we're going for.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Visually on the podcast, and yeah, it's awful. Yeah, it's
- 3:52Speaker 2: a to what end? Yeah?
- 3:55Speaker 3: I just wonder what the next step is going to
- 3:57Speaker 3: be because eventually a video won't be enough and then
- 4:01Speaker 3: how are we going to dazzle people?
- 4:03Speaker 4: Yeah, that's gonna be an interesting, uh crossroads for us.
- 4:07Speaker 4: But I will say it's like every podcast is its
- 4:10Speaker 4: own little TV show now.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Yes, which is kind of It's weird because like growing up,
- 4:13Speaker 3: it's like the dream, right host a TV talk.
- 4:16Speaker 2: A talk show. Yeah, and now here we are with
- 4:19Speaker 2: everyone else.
- 4:20Speaker 4: It's such a monkey's pa sort of like like it's
- 4:23Speaker 4: m Night Shyamalan doing that, you know where. It's like
- 4:25Speaker 4: this kid grew up wanting to have a talk show
- 4:27Speaker 4: and now he's got one.
- 4:29Speaker 2: But it's a podcast. I'm joking. First, I love my podcast.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I do too. I love podcasts.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Truly, so thankful to be able to have a podcast
- 4:38Speaker 3: that people listen to.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I mean, it feels like a miracle to me.
- 4:40Speaker 4: That's the toughest thing, right, is that unlike a talk show,
- 4:45Speaker 4: there's no studio audience.
- 4:47Speaker 2: No, You're you're sort of just shouting.
- 4:49Speaker 4: Into a void and hoping that someone it reaches somebody somewhere.
- 4:53Speaker 3: When I because I'll do for the Patreon like recaps
- 4:56Speaker 3: of housewives or whatever, and I'm just sitting in my
- 4:58Speaker 3: back office talking into him, Like if someone observing that
- 5:03Speaker 3: from the outside, I can't imagine what does that even
- 5:05Speaker 3: look like?
- 5:06Speaker 2: That?
- 5:06Speaker 4: That is the thing that I find so impressive about
- 5:08Speaker 4: you in this podcast is I record the intro after
- 5:11Speaker 4: the guests leave, and even then I feel so crazy
- 5:15Speaker 4: talking by myself, Like I could never do what you
- 5:19Speaker 4: and Mark Meron do it's the true famed monologists, you
- 5:25Speaker 4: and Mark Maren.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I couldn't do it.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I just don't think I could sustain like a train
- 5:31Speaker 4: of thought that would be engaging to people like.
- 5:34Speaker 3: I just did, which is you know, just platinum level.
- 5:38Speaker 2: There are super cuts of you doing it well though
- 5:41Speaker 2: on socials honestly, like should we re record?
- 5:46Speaker 3: There are aspects of this podcast that I think people
- 5:48Speaker 3: look at and they're like, wait, he's just he's fundamentally
- 5:51Speaker 3: doing the podcast incorrect. I'm sure the network is like,
- 5:55Speaker 3: why doesn't he just do this without the guest here? Yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 3: and I've just locked myself into a thing which may
- 6:02Speaker 3: or may not work, and that I guess it's neither
- 6:06Speaker 3: here nor there.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Well, I think you're still like doing it better than say,
- 6:09Speaker 4: like Jessica Alba.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Would I do everything better than Jessica Help?
- 6:13Speaker 4: But I don't know that she has a podcast, but
- 6:16Speaker 4: you know someone's thinking about it on her team. Oh
- 6:19Speaker 4: my god, they've pitched it over over And that is
- 6:22Speaker 4: the other great thing that has changed is now podcasting
- 6:24Speaker 4: is no longer just you know.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Normal people, normal people. It is just now every a
- 6:29Speaker 2: lister has a podcast.
- 6:31Speaker 3: This is something I've thought about and talked about I
- 6:34Speaker 3: just feel like people need to write down the amount
- 6:36Speaker 3: of money they want, Yeah, and then we all get
- 6:38Speaker 3: to look at it and we get to decide how
- 6:40Speaker 3: you get there. Yeah, because certain people, I'm just like,
- 6:43Speaker 3: how much money could you possibly need?
- 6:45Speaker 4: No, and it's like, how much is a waste suitcase
- 6:49Speaker 4: is giving them?
- 6:50Speaker 2: You know? That's what I want?
- 6:51Speaker 4: Like, it's so crazy because I have sponsors. You have sponsors.
- 6:55Speaker 4: I'm not buying a house or paying my mortgage with them.
- 6:57Speaker 4: But yeah, it's uh, yeah, I don't know. Again, I
- 7:02Speaker 4: just feel like, what's going to happen for it to
- 7:04Speaker 4: be worth it for Reese Witherspoon to do a podcast?
- 7:08Speaker 4: You have to imagine the money is.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I can't imagine. It would be lifetimes of money.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Yeah. And you know, and we love her for exactly
- 7:17Speaker 2: what is her podcast? I don't know. I'm here to
- 7:19Speaker 2: promote it.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Again, it seems likely that she has one or happened
- 7:24Speaker 4: he heard her on podcasts Now.
- 7:25Speaker 2: She's always out there.
- 7:27Speaker 4: She's saying something, she's saying something. She's trying to get
- 7:30Speaker 4: us on board with n f T S and AI
- 7:34Speaker 4: she is Is that true?
- 7:35Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah?
- 7:36Speaker 4: She famously got in trouble when NFTs were you know,
- 7:40Speaker 4: I mean, this was past the point where every thinking
- 7:42Speaker 4: person knew that this was not going to happen, right,
- 7:45Speaker 4: but she still tried to make it happen, and then
- 7:47Speaker 4: recently had a video that was just like get on
- 7:50Speaker 4: board now, you know with ai Oh, it's always like
- 7:55Speaker 4: the girl boss take on evil technology there.
- 8:00Speaker 3: And she is kind of the foremost book critic, yes
- 8:04Speaker 3: of our time.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Yes, yes, I mean she really doesn't make it happen
- 8:08Speaker 4: though for some of these books that some of them
- 8:10Speaker 4: maybe should have been left in the airport, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 4: But her greatest achievement is still the d uy.
- 8:19Speaker 2: She was you know who I am. Well, you're about
- 8:21Speaker 2: to find out it is her best work on her side, Yeah,
- 8:27Speaker 2: I was on the person.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, how couldn't you be, because it's like, who's she
- 8:31Speaker 4: going to hit.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Out there, out in some empty southern road, just blasting
- 8:36Speaker 3: down the freeway.
- 8:37Speaker 2: Again, obviously we're both very vehemently against.
- 8:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that, I mean, not to get too
- 8:46Speaker 3: serious about it, the d U I is truly one
- 8:48Speaker 3: of these things where I'm just like, this is a
- 8:50Speaker 3: beyond horrible thing.
- 8:51Speaker 4: It is, and it's so crazy, especially if you live
- 8:53Speaker 4: in a city like ours, where there are a million
- 8:55Speaker 4: options other than doing that. Like you, it's this isn't
- 8:58Speaker 4: two thousand and six any You don't have to do that,
- 9:01Speaker 4: not that anyone had a gun to your head and
- 9:03Speaker 4: was forcing you to do it before, But it is
- 9:05Speaker 4: so crazy when I know, if people are still getting duys,
- 9:09Speaker 4: unbelievable to me.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And it's like you're not even poor. You know, there's
- 9:13Speaker 2: like for.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Ninety eight percent of the population, if you should be
- 9:17Speaker 3: able to figure out how to get home. Yeah, actually
- 9:20Speaker 3: everybody walk home. Yeah, there's just literally no excuse. It's
- 9:25Speaker 3: just to me, it's one crime where I'm just like, absolutely,
- 9:29Speaker 3: I can't imagine any logic that leads.
- 9:31Speaker 4: I hate it when I'm a friend offers to drive
- 9:35Speaker 4: me and doesn't tell me that they are not in
- 9:38Speaker 4: a position to be driving because they've put in my
- 9:40Speaker 4: life at rest.
- 9:41Speaker 2: This happened recently.
- 9:42Speaker 4: I got in a car with somebody, not even really
- 9:45Speaker 4: a friend, just in a quaint in somebody see out
- 9:47Speaker 4: and we were going from one house party to another
- 9:49Speaker 4: house party.
- 9:50Speaker 2: He's like, oh, I can drive. And this was at
- 9:51Speaker 2: this point like four or five am.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Okay, so already exhausted.
- 9:55Speaker 4: It should have been on my radar that he was
- 9:57Speaker 4: probably not completely sober.
- 9:58Speaker 2: And I asked him.
- 9:59Speaker 4: I was like, you're good to right, and he was
- 10:00Speaker 4: like absolutely. We got to the other party. He parked
- 10:04Speaker 4: on the wrong side of the street. And this was
- 10:07Speaker 4: in Palm Springs, which is a city seemingly designed for
- 10:11Speaker 4: drunk drivers except for the one way straight too. But
- 10:14Speaker 4: the roads are wider than any road in America, right
- 10:17Speaker 4: because they know those people are swerving all over the place, and.
- 10:22Speaker 3: The seniors driving, and God bless our seniors. But we
- 10:25Speaker 3: know that driving can be a little tricky as well.
- 10:27Speaker 4: People don't stop driving when they know they should, you know.
- 10:32Speaker 4: And if we wait for that day to come, that
- 10:34Speaker 4: day will never.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Come from us people. No, no, no, no.
- 10:36Speaker 3: My grandma's not ninety five and still driving, but she
- 10:39Speaker 3: has the self awareness of I think it's about time.
- 10:42Speaker 3: She just recently passed her test, which to me is
- 10:45Speaker 3: well remarkable. She's passing the test, then you know, go
- 10:48Speaker 3: for it. I guess I shouldn't be driving, honestly, I
- 10:51Speaker 3: certainly shouldn't, but you should have seen me on the
- 10:53Speaker 3: way here.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I just got a new car, a new used car.
- 10:57Speaker 4: Last night because I told my car last week, oh no,
- 10:59Speaker 4: what I literally was in a fight with my husband,
- 11:03Speaker 4: was like, I need to go drive around the block.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Got in my car, drove about half a block away
- 11:08Speaker 4: from my house, turned a corner. This is like in
- 11:11Speaker 4: a My street is very narrow, it might as well
- 11:14Speaker 4: be a one way street. But I was like turning
- 11:16Speaker 4: around the corner and just came. I was like, my
- 11:20Speaker 4: husband called me, and I looked down at the phone,
- 11:23Speaker 4: looked up, and I was like, head on into somebody else.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And the thing was, it wasn't even like a bad crash.
- 11:28Speaker 2: No one was hurt.
- 11:29Speaker 4: It cosmetically my car even looked like it should be fine.
- 11:32Speaker 4: But it hit some sort of fluid container or something
- 11:35Speaker 4: that they were like, no, it's not worth it. And
- 11:37Speaker 4: so I had to go and visit the fine folks
- 11:40Speaker 4: at CarMax, which I will say I bought a car
- 11:43Speaker 4: on Monday, Okay, decided I didn't care enough about I
- 11:48Speaker 4: don't have enough. I don't have a lot of vanity
- 11:49Speaker 4: about cars in general. Like I've never had a car
- 11:53Speaker 4: that I thought was like cool, right. It was always
- 11:55Speaker 4: what I could afford and what seemed practical. And I
- 11:58Speaker 4: bought a car and it was like slightly more money
- 12:02Speaker 4: than the insurance gave me to buy.
- 12:03Speaker 2: A car, okay.
- 12:05Speaker 4: And then I got it home and I was like,
- 12:07Speaker 4: I don't love this car enough or care enough about
- 12:10Speaker 4: cars to have spent over the amount of money that
- 12:12Speaker 4: the insurance gave me. So I took it right back yesterday.
- 12:15Speaker 4: It returns a ten day return policy at CarMax. That's
- 12:17Speaker 4: that to me feels like magic. It is like a
- 12:20Speaker 4: car should not be able to be returned well. And
- 12:21Speaker 4: then I returned it and exchanged it for a much
- 12:24Speaker 4: older car.
- 12:25Speaker 2: This is now.
- 12:26Speaker 4: I have a car now that is four years young,
- 12:30Speaker 4: older than my car that I just totaled and like
- 12:33Speaker 4: twice the mile age. But it was also like six
- 12:36Speaker 4: thousand dollars cheaper than the car. About it Monday, so
- 12:38Speaker 4: I was like, who cares? And you know what, it
- 12:40Speaker 4: is actually a cool car. It looks very cool. That's
- 12:44Speaker 4: now it is very old.
- 12:46Speaker 2: And what twenty nineteen, twenty eighty Oh that's not bad. Yeah, no, no, no,
- 12:50Speaker 2: it's not like it's not like, you know, a different era,
- 12:53Speaker 2: but it does. I am missing some of my twenty
- 12:55Speaker 2: twenty three car.
- 12:56Speaker 3: Right, I mean, you know, but there are certain features
- 12:59Speaker 3: of newer cars that are absolutely the most annoying thing
- 13:02Speaker 3: you could possibly I mean, like that taking control of
- 13:07Speaker 3: the car, the amount of beeping that's going on.
- 13:09Speaker 4: I had a rental and upset in New York last
- 13:11Speaker 4: weekend and it kept telling me, Hey, you need.
- 13:13Speaker 2: To take a do you need to take a break?
- 13:15Speaker 3: You do it?
- 13:16Speaker 2: Okay?
- 13:16Speaker 4: It kept doing and I was like, and I think
- 13:18Speaker 4: it's that eye motion sensors that's like keeping track of
- 13:21Speaker 4: your eyes, and like I was like, bitch.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I'm fine.
- 13:25Speaker 3: That to me is such a distraction and I'm immediately mad.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I was like, oh, are you okay? Yes, what's wrong
- 13:31Speaker 4: with you right? Because you seem to be off if
- 13:33Speaker 4: you're checking me. It was so annoying.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel like the sweet spot for cars was
- 13:38Speaker 3: like probably twenty eighteen, when they had a lot of
- 13:41Speaker 3: wonderful features, but not the beeping, not the tracking.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Not every everything you do right being deeped.
- 13:49Speaker 3: And I don't really care about even a backup camera,
- 13:52Speaker 3: to be honest, I don't trust it.
- 13:53Speaker 2: That, you know what. It's crazy.
- 13:54Speaker 4: I only just in the last couple of years really
- 13:57Speaker 4: stopped looking behind me physically, and it was so crazy
- 14:00Speaker 4: because I remember when I bought that car that I
- 14:02Speaker 4: just totaled. I had like a young gen Z salesperson
- 14:06Speaker 4: doing the test ride with me, and he did not
- 14:09Speaker 4: know how to do to like without a back a camera.
- 14:14Speaker 2: He just couldn't.
- 14:15Speaker 4: And it's the whole generation of people now and then
- 14:18Speaker 4: some who are not learning fundamental skills.
- 14:20Speaker 3: That's because that's really one that you may have to
- 14:23Speaker 3: use it somewhat. The camera is going to die.
- 14:25Speaker 4: Yeah, And it's not like it's a mechanically difficult maneuver,
- 14:29Speaker 4: no bit of moving.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Your body kind of what you do in other parts
- 14:34Speaker 3: of reality.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Lots of them can't parallel park well. I mean without that,
- 14:38Speaker 4: I can't say mouth yeah. I mean granted, that is
- 14:42Speaker 4: something that I'm afflicted with. That skill comes and goes
- 14:45Speaker 4: for me.
- 14:46Speaker 2: It really does depends. I'm like, oh my god, I'm
- 14:48Speaker 2: I remember.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Everything like, oh, line yourself up here, turn the wheel here,
- 14:52Speaker 4: But if anyone is watching.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Me, do it out the window? No, forget it, No
- 14:58Speaker 3: I will. I'll try ten times while they watch, and
- 15:00Speaker 3: then I'll leave.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Yep. And that is Have you lived in New York? Yes?
- 15:04Speaker 2: But in drive well.
- 15:06Speaker 4: No, obviously, I like, who never should you attempt it?
- 15:09Speaker 4: I had to drive twice when I lived in New York,
- 15:11Speaker 4: and it was this two of the scariest days of
- 15:13Speaker 4: my entire life. But this is the thing I always
- 15:15Speaker 4: say about the differences between you or in LA is
- 15:18Speaker 4: that you know, I would much rather be stuck on
- 15:20Speaker 4: the subway between stations for twenty minutes straight then be
- 15:24Speaker 4: at my destination driving around the block angrily because I
- 15:29Speaker 4: can't find parking, Like I am there, but I can't
- 15:32Speaker 4: be there, right, you know, And it is it's it's
- 15:36Speaker 4: it's like five times.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Is infuriating as being stuck on public transit.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I don't mind the I was just talking about this.
- 15:42Speaker 3: I don't mind kind of especially if it's like a
- 15:44Speaker 3: social event having some time to waste driving around. Oh
- 15:48Speaker 3: you want to run out the clock, Yes, running out
- 15:50Speaker 3: the clock and then getting there was something to complain about.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Feel that's fair, all right?
- 15:53Speaker 3: But I mean I I lived in mid City, LA
- 15:56Speaker 3: for years when I first moved here, and I would
- 15:59Speaker 3: literally have to park half a mile from my house
- 16:01Speaker 3: every day.
- 16:03Speaker 2: So it was just this parking when I lived in Hollywood.
- 16:07Speaker 4: When I first moved here Central Hollywood, I twice had
- 16:11Speaker 4: a guy that guys who were coming over from grinder
- 16:14Speaker 4: to hookup who aborted the hookup because they were driving.
- 16:17Speaker 4: They would drive around for twenty plus minutes looking for parking,
- 16:20Speaker 4: and when they finally couldn't find parking, they were just like, sorry,
- 16:23Speaker 4: let's understand it not worth it now, like physically impossible.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah. It was terrible. And the the worst part was
- 16:30Speaker 2: is I would do this to people and not really
- 16:32Speaker 2: warn them because I didn't want them to not of
- 16:34Speaker 2: course they simply won't. Yeah.
- 16:36Speaker 4: It felt a little bit like Entrapman sometimes because often
- 16:40Speaker 4: more often than not, they would come sweaty and angry
- 16:42Speaker 4: that they had to drive around so long to find parking.
- 16:46Speaker 2: But they did it, you know, and there's a little
- 16:49Speaker 2: spark then.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Yeah, they bring a spark that most people don't have
- 16:53Speaker 3: because they're about hatred.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Well, I think there is something else we should talk about.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Okay, you were on the pod cast a few years ago,
- 17:01Speaker 3: kind of in the fog of COVID, and the podcast
- 17:04Speaker 3: is called I said no Gifts. You brought a gift.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Then it became a little bit of an issue, but
- 17:08Speaker 3: we moved on. Oh, I mean, show up today with
- 17:12Speaker 3: what from where I'm sitting appears to be a gift.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Well, and you know what, that's sort of in the
- 17:16Speaker 2: eye of the beholder, because this, you know, you could
- 17:19Speaker 2: call it a gift if you wanted to, or you
- 17:21Speaker 2: could say I'm presenting you with something that I think
- 17:24Speaker 2: you deserve.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I like, I'm going to take the second option.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just simply presenting you with something that I
- 17:30Speaker 2: think you deserve.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I'm excited to see what I deserve. This is a dense,
- 17:37Speaker 3: heavy it's heavy. It's a kind of a just a
- 17:41Speaker 3: regular gift box and a gorgeous striped paper and it's
- 17:45Speaker 3: it's heavy, heavier than you would expect.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Okay, Oh, I feel like we're not getting enough tissue wrap.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Oh yeah, give it? What is what are those people
- 17:54Speaker 2: called who get aroused by the ASMR pay something like that?
- 17:58Speaker 3: It feels good. Okay, I'm just okay, we're reaching in.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Oh my god, don't worry.
- 18:09Speaker 2: It's not like a Russian nesting dolls situation. It's the
- 18:12Speaker 2: last leg. Okay, we're pulling it out. I really felt
- 18:16Speaker 2: like you deserved this.
- 18:17Speaker 4: What best Comedy Podcast, Bridger, because I know you don't
- 18:22Speaker 4: have one of like this.
- 18:23Speaker 2: You don't have an award of your own like this.
- 18:25Speaker 2: So I figured that you.
- 18:27Speaker 4: If anyone deserves Best Comedy Podcast from the Asian American
- 18:32Speaker 4: Podcasting Association, it's Bridger.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I've been trying to.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Get this exact work, exactly the Golden Crane. It's been
- 18:41Speaker 3: it's become problematic. People are begging me to stop. It
- 18:46Speaker 3: is obviously it is something that is close to my heart.
- 18:52Speaker 2: I want it for along with micho Har.
- 18:55Speaker 4: She was just and she also not Asian, but still
- 19:01Speaker 4: they still gave it to her. And this was for
- 19:04Speaker 4: Urgent Care my last podcastrom Ri I P And Yeah,
- 19:10Speaker 4: I think that more awards should work like this. You
- 19:13Speaker 4: should be able to give your award away. It should
- 19:16Speaker 4: be like recognized by the governing board of whatever, like
- 19:21Speaker 4: whoever gave.
- 19:21Speaker 3: You right now, I now am the holder of this thing.
- 19:25Speaker 4: And that's an easy adjust on the names there, that's
- 19:28Speaker 4: an easy adjust, of course.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yes, of course, this feels almost like the ring or something.
- 19:34Speaker 4: I mean, this is like like meant to be the
- 19:37Speaker 4: murder weapon in an Hboius drama.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy that point at the top. This is
- 19:44Speaker 2: something you pick up in a ball.
- 19:45Speaker 4: I mean, honestly, half the reason I'm giving this to
- 19:47Speaker 4: you is because I feel in safe with it.
- 19:49Speaker 2: In my own home, this.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Would be one of those crazy Hollywood murders, your head
- 19:53Speaker 3: getting bashed, Like, I'm going to put.
- 19:55Speaker 4: That on a shelf on my wall with my other
- 19:58Speaker 4: trophies and wards in Quake Country exactly.
- 20:02Speaker 2: That's crazy. That's crazy.
- 20:04Speaker 3: But here in the studio, this is gonna be so dense.
- 20:07Speaker 2: I think it's going to look really great and it.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Goes so perfect intimidating because like the guests, most guests
- 20:12Speaker 3: are not going to realize they're gonna see this and think, wow,
- 20:15Speaker 3: this thing is one and he's want and no more.
- 20:19Speaker 3: This adds some actual legitimacy to the podcast.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I feel really good about this. I also know Mitra
- 20:24Speaker 4: has hers, so I'm going to try to get just one. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 4: oh my god, yes that is. I'm going to start
- 20:30Speaker 4: collecting this exact trophy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't even know,
- 20:35Speaker 4: Like there was no awards ceremony that right, because this
- 20:38Speaker 4: was twenty twenty yeah, and it was a during lockdown.
- 20:43Speaker 3: It must have been, so they must have mailed it
- 20:45Speaker 3: to you. I guess that's an expensive thing to mail.
- 20:48Speaker 2: It's as heavy as heavy and again we cannstiss is
- 20:51Speaker 2: enough dangerous?
- 20:54Speaker 3: Did you like have to do a zoom acceptance speech
- 20:57Speaker 3: or anything.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 20:58Speaker 4: I think they've instagram messaged me and she said you won,
- 21:01Speaker 4: and said that I could be wrong.
- 21:03Speaker 2: It was very casual whatever it was.
- 21:05Speaker 3: I kind of like that, a very casual award. So
- 21:08Speaker 3: just take all the pomp and circumstance out of it.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Give me the trophy.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Don't drag us everybody through this whole ceremony.
- 21:15Speaker 2: It's boring. Oh no, no, just let people.
- 21:17Speaker 3: Get it and then they can announce to their friends
- 21:19Speaker 3: and family.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Look that I've got.
- 21:22Speaker 3: I think that that's perfectly fine. So you and Metro
- 21:25Speaker 3: probably found out separately.
- 21:27Speaker 2: They might it might have been a group DM on Instagram.
- 21:30Speaker 2: It just looks like total spam.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Yeah, spam has gone a very It's really gone up
- 21:37Speaker 3: on Instagram recently. I'm getting a lot of my friend
- 21:39Speaker 3: saw you and she would like to meet, which I
- 21:42Speaker 3: think I'm eventually I'm going to dive into one of
- 21:44Speaker 3: those and it's going to turn me straight.
- 21:47Speaker 4: It is so funny that they don't, like, they don't
- 21:50Speaker 4: really account for the context of our desires. There's really like, no,
- 21:55Speaker 4: there's there sort of a bunch at the wall. I
- 21:57Speaker 4: will say it is funny because if you're on like,
- 22:00Speaker 4: I don't know if you've heard gay men on the
- 22:02Speaker 4: internet complain about this, but there is like a certain
- 22:06Speaker 4: kind of gay guy who complains endlessly about the number
- 22:09Speaker 4: of trans women on Grinder. Right, Okay, I know it's ridiculous.
- 22:12Speaker 4: It's ridiculous because in part what they find to be
- 22:16Speaker 4: a preponderance is actually statistically quite low. But even still,
- 22:20Speaker 4: I found this out from someone that the majority of
- 22:23Speaker 4: those profiles are bots. Because what happens is these people
- 22:27Speaker 4: who release the bots into Grinder, they do probably an
- 22:30Speaker 4: equal number of gay guys and these trans girls, but
- 22:33Speaker 4: what ends up happening is the AI that's producing them
- 22:36Speaker 4: and knowing which ones to replicate. Gay guys are smart
- 22:40Speaker 4: enough to know when they're talking to a bot, and
- 22:42Speaker 4: they abort almost immediately, right, they catch on pretty quickly.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Straight men who are looking for trans women to hook
- 22:51Speaker 4: up with are not smart enough to know when they're
- 22:54Speaker 4: talking to a bot. So what ends up happening is
- 22:57Speaker 4: it's this feedback where because the only ones that are
- 23:00Speaker 4: successful are the trans profiles, they're creating even more that's
- 23:04Speaker 4: amazing because those are the ones that are hitting and
- 23:08Speaker 4: so all it's like and even and again I kind
- 23:10Speaker 4: of stress is enough even with the fake ones.
- 23:12Speaker 2: The numbers are so low and easy to ignore. I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 2: it's I mean like.
- 23:16Speaker 4: But but the but the reality of it is is
- 23:19Speaker 4: that it's even less than what they're complaining about.
- 23:21Speaker 3: I just don't think the complaining makes zero science.
- 23:24Speaker 2: It's just like, what are you? You know?
- 23:25Speaker 4: It makes your sense to me too. And inevitably the
- 23:27Speaker 4: one that the number one retort is always like, well,
- 23:29Speaker 4: they should get their own app. And here's the problem boys,
- 23:32Speaker 4: is that again, statistically so few of them that there
- 23:38Speaker 4: is no like, there's no reason to have an app.
- 23:41Speaker 4: It's just so crazy to me the things that game
- 23:44Speaker 4: in we'll find a complain about.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I feel like we should have kept marriage from us
- 23:49Speaker 2: for a long so because they got it, and boy
- 23:52Speaker 2: did they a little uppity. Now that we got marriage,
- 23:57Speaker 2: now we can find some new stupid ship to come.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Oh not enough, not enough, I mean. And the thing
- 24:03Speaker 2: is is it could go away at any day, any day. Yeah,
- 24:06Speaker 2: and I'm I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, you see this,
- 24:13Speaker 2: it's it's over.
- 24:16Speaker 3: I'm The thing about bots on Grinder or any kind
- 24:18Speaker 3: of dating app is does it lead to like being
- 24:21Speaker 3: like I need money.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's like money or like personal information
- 24:27Speaker 4: so that they can go and seal your identity stuff
- 24:30Speaker 4: like that. Right, But again, I'm a gay guy, so
- 24:32Speaker 4: I'm smart enough to have never been caught up in one.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yeah, like far down the Road is just so dark. Yeah,
- 24:38Speaker 2: it is so crazy. But no one is forcing you
- 24:42Speaker 2: to talk to anyone on that app right, exactly. That's
- 24:46Speaker 2: I mean, it's like I can guarantee you that most
- 24:48Speaker 2: of the dolls I know are not looking at you
- 24:52Speaker 2: and saying, oh god, I hope, I hope, I no,
- 24:56Speaker 2: like one of like they probably couldn't even pick you
- 24:59Speaker 2: up out of a line. Oh you're a white guy
- 25:02Speaker 2: with a fade and a shoulder tattoo and one in
- 25:05Speaker 2: a MILLI some five o'clock shadow couldn't imagine who you
- 25:08Speaker 2: could be.
- 25:11Speaker 3: It's so yeah, that sort of thing just drives me.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:15Speaker 4: And it is that thing of like we assume, as
- 25:19Speaker 4: we no longer feel we need to be a part
- 25:21Speaker 4: of a big coalition, we feel safe.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Well, it's exactly what you're saying human behavior.
- 25:26Speaker 4: It's like, oh no, like I don't want to be
- 25:28Speaker 4: a part of a coalition that that has that you know,
- 25:31Speaker 4: isn't all just made up of people like me exactly up,
- 25:34Speaker 4: which is like so historically like anathema to this entire movement.
- 25:38Speaker 2: It's so crazy.
- 25:39Speaker 3: There's that kind of no fixing it at this point.
- 25:42Speaker 4: Well, I could think of a few things, but a
- 25:44Speaker 4: lot of them are genocide adjacent.
- 25:46Speaker 3: You're keeping those from when you run the office. Ah okay,
- 25:51Speaker 3: so I have this award here, do you have any interests?
- 25:54Speaker 3: Like is goal wise would you be like I would
- 25:57Speaker 3: love to win a like an Emmy or an Oscar
- 25:59Speaker 3: or anything, or is that something where it's like if
- 26:01Speaker 3: it comes along.
- 26:02Speaker 4: It is one of those things where, like I think,
- 26:04Speaker 4: when you're young, you're really like, oh, that would be
- 26:07Speaker 4: so cool, and that is a part of the dreamscape
- 26:09Speaker 4: of whatever career in the arts.
- 26:11Speaker 2: You're sort of sketching out for yourself.
- 26:13Speaker 4: And then you go through a phase I think, or
- 26:16Speaker 4: at least I did, where once I understood a little
- 26:19Speaker 4: bit more about the mechanics and everything of this industry,
- 26:23Speaker 4: I set my sights on much more attainable goals, and
- 26:26Speaker 4: I went through a long period where you know, I
- 26:29Speaker 4: was had a day job, but was pursuing things in
- 26:31Speaker 4: like the best I could have hoped for. The best
- 26:34Speaker 4: outcome I could have hoped for for myself was getting
- 26:36Speaker 4: a staff writing job, right right right. That was like,
- 26:39Speaker 4: if I could make that happen in my lifetime, I
- 26:41Speaker 4: will have done it and been fine and and so
- 26:45Speaker 4: then like you stop expecting awards, and then I think
- 26:48Speaker 4: you do hit another phase where like you get successful
- 26:51Speaker 4: enough or certainly when it happens like I got. It's funny,
- 26:54Speaker 4: I said in two thousand and fourteen. It must have
- 26:59Speaker 4: been thirteen or twenty fourteen. I made my iPhone start
- 27:02Speaker 4: addressing me as Golden Globe nominee Joel Kim Booster.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Which is so.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Funny because even then, in my early twenties, when I
- 27:09Speaker 4: had when literally for this bit, I could have imagined
- 27:13Speaker 4: any outcome for myself, and the best I could come
- 27:16Speaker 4: up with in my wildest dreams was Golden Globe nominee
- 27:20Speaker 4: Joel Kim Booster.
- 27:22Speaker 2: And it was so funny.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Whenever someone will find my phone at a party or
- 27:25Speaker 4: something and do the thing where they're like, hey, Siri,
- 27:27Speaker 4: who are you, it would say like I.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Belonged to Golden Globe nominee Joel Kim Booster. I didn't
- 27:31Speaker 2: even know you could do this.
- 27:32Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah you could be like you could just
- 27:34Speaker 4: ask Suriya, hey, sorry, call me this and and it'll start.
- 27:37Speaker 2: It'll change your name to that when it when it
- 27:40Speaker 2: uses it.
- 27:41Speaker 4: But yeah, and then for Fire Island, I got nominated
- 27:44Speaker 4: for an Emmy all that's right. And it was this
- 27:47Speaker 4: funny like sort of like I secreted this into happening
- 27:51Speaker 4: in some way because I, for you, for like almost
- 27:54Speaker 4: a decade, had my iPhone calling me Golden Globe nomina me.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But now I'm Emmy nominee. I should change it in
- 27:59Speaker 4: my phone. I should change it, you know. Yeah, things
- 28:03Speaker 4: will go very quick.
- 28:05Speaker 2: I might have changed it to Emmy nominee after it happened.
- 28:07Speaker 4: But again, like this is the thing too about this
- 28:10Speaker 4: the the phase when you are in the position to
- 28:12Speaker 4: be going to award shows and stuff like that, is
- 28:14Speaker 4: that like it becomes so incredibly uncool to care, right,
- 28:19Speaker 4: you know, right, this is why I'm so grateful to
- 28:21Speaker 4: be in a relationship with someone outside the industry, because
- 28:24Speaker 4: when I went to the Emmys, like you aren't even
- 28:26Speaker 4: allowed to like be excited, because it's like you'll look lame,
- 28:30Speaker 4: you'll look cringe. It's embarrassing to care about stuff like that,
- 28:33Speaker 4: And like all of my friends who are in the industry,
- 28:35Speaker 4: we're all at a level now where it's like, well, yeah,
- 28:37Speaker 4: of course it's your job, Like, this is your job,
- 28:39Speaker 4: This is a normal part of any of your job.
- 28:41Speaker 4: You should just you know, take it in as just
- 28:43Speaker 4: another day because it's just your job. And then my husband,
- 28:47Speaker 4: to his credit, you know, could sense that energy for
- 28:49Speaker 4: me at the Emmys and at one point was like, Hey,
- 28:53Speaker 4: you've wanted this your entire life. Stop trying to be
- 28:56Speaker 4: mister cool guy like pad Malakshmi's standing over there and
- 28:59Speaker 4: we watch her on TV.
- 29:00Speaker 2: This is really cool and allow yourself to feel that.
- 29:02Speaker 4: And it was a nice level reset because I did
- 29:05Speaker 4: then sort of take in the enormity of like even
- 29:08Speaker 4: just being nominated at something like this, because again, it's
- 29:11Speaker 4: just was so far out of reach for me, or
- 29:14Speaker 4: it seemed to be for so long, and now it's
- 29:16Speaker 4: like this, I'm in this again, this weird position where
- 29:19Speaker 4: it's like, well, if then if I never produce work
- 29:21Speaker 4: that gets you know, attention from an award's body, again,
- 29:24Speaker 4: am I have?
- 29:25Speaker 2: I did I peak? Did I like?
- 29:28Speaker 4: And you don't I don't want that to be the
- 29:31Speaker 4: way I frame, you know, everything going forward, but it
- 29:35Speaker 4: is this now. I'm in the period of my career
- 29:38Speaker 4: where it's all about sort of resetting the goalposts and figuring.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Out where they are, because you know.
- 29:44Speaker 4: I'm very lucky to have achieved as much as I have,
- 29:47Speaker 4: you know, in my career. But it is like scary
- 29:49Speaker 4: when you're like, well what now totally you know.
- 29:53Speaker 3: No, I feel like it's I never think passed things
- 29:57Speaker 3: working out? Yeah, no, And then when it does, I'm
- 30:01Speaker 3: just like, oh my god, what am I supposed to do?
- 30:04Speaker 4: Now?
- 30:04Speaker 2: This was never a part of the plan.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Well, And it's interesting too because like we also live
- 30:09Speaker 4: in a period now where fame has kind of all
- 30:12Speaker 4: but been exercised from the equation for at least people
- 30:15Speaker 4: like us, because like, there is no famous person anymore. No,
- 30:19Speaker 4: there is no one who is truly famous to everyone
- 30:22Speaker 4: on this planet or in this country even there's very
- 30:25Speaker 4: few people, like there are no real movie stars being
- 30:27Speaker 4: created anymore, Like Timothy Shalla may maybe the last one,
- 30:31Speaker 4: and that's even arguable to a lot of people. But
- 30:33Speaker 4: at least I feel like most of America knows who
- 30:35Speaker 4: that is, or Emma Stone or something like that.
- 30:37Speaker 2: But yeah, there's just no Like.
- 30:39Speaker 4: I it's so funny because I'm like, yeah, I'm probably
- 30:43Speaker 4: never gonna be famous in the way that I know
- 30:46Speaker 4: I imagine fame when I was a kid, because that
- 30:48Speaker 4: kind of fame doesn't exist anymore.
- 30:50Speaker 3: No, you would have I'm trying to think of a
- 30:52Speaker 3: way you could even get there. At this point, it
- 30:54Speaker 3: seems impossible.
- 30:55Speaker 2: No, it would have. I talk about a goalpost.
- 30:57Speaker 4: I would never clear because it's just like the things
- 31:01Speaker 4: you have to do is you have to be kind
- 31:02Speaker 4: of big in a way that is so broad that
- 31:06Speaker 4: I could never see myself being appealing to that many people.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I'm by like sort of virtue of who I am
- 31:15Speaker 4: in the boxes that I check and the things that
- 31:16Speaker 4: I'm interested in. Am a niche property and will remain So.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like, I guess, shoot, somebody, oh yeah, I
- 31:27Speaker 3: think that might be a yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Everybody knows LUIGIIONI. You know that's not to encourage, but
- 31:35Speaker 4: uh oh, we should be careful because now people have
- 31:38Speaker 4: been pulled off the air for saying less. You know,
- 31:41Speaker 4: I used to say crazy shit online and no one
- 31:44Speaker 4: said boo, no one like I got away with murder.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Once upon a time on Twitter.
- 31:49Speaker 4: I tweeted, verbatim, I will burn Greg Abbot's house to
- 31:52Speaker 4: the ground.
- 31:53Speaker 2: This was after he banned abortion in Texas.
- 31:56Speaker 4: And literally could not imagine saying that any Republican today,
- 32:01Speaker 4: Oh my god, without being arrested on the spot. Now,
- 32:04Speaker 4: to be fair, two LAPD detectives did show up to
- 32:07Speaker 4: my house the next day and they were like, sir,
- 32:10Speaker 4: do you have any plans of driving to Texas and
- 32:12Speaker 4: setting Governor Great Abbot's house on fire?
- 32:14Speaker 2: And I was like no, and.
- 32:16Speaker 4: They were like, okay, then why would you say that?
- 32:18Speaker 4: And I was like, because it's funny. I was like,
- 32:21Speaker 4: the like, the premise of that statement is hilarious that
- 32:24Speaker 4: I Joel Kim Booster like sealless gay comedian elder millennial
- 32:31Speaker 4: would take the time to drive to Texas to set
- 32:33Speaker 4: a man's house on fire.
- 32:35Speaker 2: That's funny, you know.
- 32:36Speaker 4: And then they were they both sighed really deeply and
- 32:39Speaker 4: were like okay, and then left like nothing happened.
- 32:43Speaker 3: They've got to hire somebody who like filters these sort
- 32:46Speaker 3: of things, because there's a lot of wasted time. Yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 3: I remember there's I had a friend who made some
- 32:55Speaker 3: sort of threat about killing the president on Twitter and
- 32:57Speaker 3: she was visited by secret servants.
- 33:00Speaker 4: Yeah, like, well, you know, Guy Brandham once wrote something
- 33:02Speaker 4: for his school newspaper about Chelsea Clinton and the Secret
- 33:05Speaker 4: Service showed up.
- 33:07Speaker 2: What did he write about Chelsea?
- 33:08Speaker 4: You know what?
- 33:08Speaker 2: It's not my tale to tell. You'll have.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, but you can imagine, right, you know
- 33:15Speaker 4: Guy brand Yes, we all know Guy Brandon. We all
- 33:17Speaker 4: know he pops the fuck off without without fear showing
- 33:23Speaker 4: up his dorm.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Oh. I would have loved to see that conversation.
- 33:26Speaker 2: Oh my god. Can you imagine the way he would
- 33:27Speaker 2: dog walk those secret services?
- 33:29Speaker 3: Absolutely broken? I feel that way when I just have
- 33:34Speaker 3: a nice conversation with guy.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Ah.
- 33:41Speaker 3: Well, I think we should play a game. Yeah, we're
- 33:44Speaker 3: gonna play a couple of games. Actually, let's get into this.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I need a number between one and ten from you.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Uh seven, Okay, I'm gonna do some like calculating. You
- 33:52Speaker 3: can promote, recommend, do whatever you want.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 33:55Speaker 4: I have not won an award for this podcast. My
- 33:58Speaker 4: new podcast, Intimacy Coordinator. It's out via the SmartLess Media network.
- 34:02Speaker 4: You can listen to it wherever you find podcasts, and
- 34:04Speaker 4: it is just simply me sitting down with two or
- 34:07Speaker 4: three guests to talk about relationships and love, insects and
- 34:10Speaker 4: dating and everything to do with those worlds.
- 34:14Speaker 2: And we're having a lot of fun.
- 34:16Speaker 4: And I would appreciate the streams because God knows, I
- 34:20Speaker 4: have nothing else going on, as we've previously stated. And
- 34:24Speaker 4: really again, if you told me ten years ago that
- 34:28Speaker 4: I'd be Emmy nominated but the center of my career
- 34:31Speaker 4: would be a podcast, I would have had a lot
- 34:34Speaker 4: of feelings about that. Lots of other stuff coming around
- 34:38Speaker 4: the pike, though I know it, I feel it, and
- 34:41Speaker 4: you could be found online and found online I hate
- 34:44Speaker 4: Joel Kim, but you know what, I'm barely on socials anymore.
- 34:47Speaker 4: I'm on Instagram exclusively to post clips of my podcast,
- 34:50Speaker 4: right and then I leave. I don't have the icon
- 34:52Speaker 4: on my phone, so I can't. I don't have the
- 34:55Speaker 4: phantom urge to like poke at it, you know, New
- 34:58Speaker 4: York Times Games and specifically cross Play is now. I
- 35:02Speaker 4: spend more like three times the hours on my phone
- 35:05Speaker 4: on that app than Instagram's, and it's delightful, the happiest
- 35:08Speaker 4: I've ever been in my life. I haven't heard of
- 35:09Speaker 4: cross play though, what's this? Oh my god, it's just
- 35:11Speaker 4: scrabble that you play with other people on your phone.
- 35:15Speaker 2: And it is also this.
- 35:16Speaker 4: It's it's scrabbled, but easier because you don't actually have
- 35:19Speaker 4: to know the word exists. You could just sort of
- 35:22Speaker 4: place letters and it will tell you if it's actually
- 35:25Speaker 4: a word. Like I did not realize that Q I.
- 35:28Speaker 2: S is a word? What does that mean? Don't couldn't
- 35:31Speaker 2: tell you did. I just look at my letters and
- 35:34Speaker 2: sort of place the S there and it lit up
- 35:36Speaker 2: like it was a word, and now I play it
- 35:38Speaker 2: all the coddamn time. Kiss Chris.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Couldn't tell you the game? I actually I think there
- 35:46Speaker 4: is a function that will tell you the definition, but.
- 35:48Speaker 2: I've never looked at it.
- 35:49Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to look this up because I am
- 35:51Speaker 3: curious because.
- 35:52Speaker 2: I play against some friends where I'm like, I know,
- 35:54Speaker 2: you didn't know that was a word. This was sitting
- 35:58Speaker 2: in the back of your vocap.
- 35:59Speaker 4: You'll put the letters together in a combination that seemed
- 36:04Speaker 4: to make sense and it worked out for you, you know,
- 36:07Speaker 4: And I've done the same.
- 36:09Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Well, I found one definition from something called well my
- 36:13Speaker 3: favorite dictionary win every game dot Com. It says it's
- 36:17Speaker 3: the circulating life energy that in Chinese philosophy is thought
- 36:20Speaker 3: to be inherent in all things. In traditional Chinese medicine,
- 36:23Speaker 3: the balance of negative and positive forms in the body
- 36:26Speaker 3: is believed to be essential for good health.
- 36:28Speaker 2: So it's pronounced is it chi? I guess?
- 36:31Speaker 3: And this it's the plural, so it's just q qi
- 36:36Speaker 3: And yeah, I think chi.
- 36:38Speaker 2: Okay. Interesting, I've been speaking about chi for a long
- 36:41Speaker 2: time and I had no idea.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Yes that way.
- 36:43Speaker 3: Maybe I guess you can spell it either way or something.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Is that how it works? I don't know.
- 36:48Speaker 3: I learned a new word recently that I well, I'm
- 36:52Speaker 3: just going to share it because why not. Have you
- 36:54Speaker 3: heard of something called bit flipping?
- 36:57Speaker 4: No, but I you know there's a I could take
- 37:00Speaker 4: a couple of stabs at what it means, but I won't.
- 37:03Speaker 4: It has Does it have something to do with like
- 37:05Speaker 4: someone else who started a joke and then you sort
- 37:07Speaker 4: of take it over and try and make it into
- 37:09Speaker 4: your own joke.
- 37:10Speaker 3: That's horrifying, But that is podcast. This is somehow scarier.
- 37:16Speaker 3: I was reading an article about how a plane over
- 37:20Speaker 3: Florida just dropped out of the sky for five seconds.
- 37:23Speaker 3: It didn't crash, but it dropped out of the sky
- 37:25Speaker 3: and they could not figure out what had happened to it.
- 37:28Speaker 3: Every manufacturer of every part of this plane looked into it.
- 37:31Speaker 2: They couldn't figure it out.
- 37:32Speaker 3: And I learned about the likelihood is that it was
- 37:35Speaker 3: a bit flipping, which is space radiation is you know,
- 37:39Speaker 3: constantly flying through the planet and occasionally will fly through
- 37:44Speaker 3: a computer and we'll flip, just like a one within
- 37:47Speaker 3: the code, and we'll make the thing malfunction. Usually it's
- 37:51Speaker 3: like a pixel on a screen will go out. But
- 37:54Speaker 3: in this case they think that's what happened on this plane.
- 37:57Speaker 2: That's fucking crazy.
- 37:59Speaker 3: I feel like if I have to live with that
- 38:01Speaker 3: in that everyone does.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Everyone with that, that is so crazy that like, I'm sorry,
- 38:07Speaker 2: we live in a simulation a real thing. That added
- 38:11Speaker 2: to the pile, because that's just crazy and does not
- 38:15Speaker 2: feel like it should be a thing. Yeah, that I like,
- 38:19Speaker 2: we should ground all planes. Yeah, we just anymore.
- 38:22Speaker 3: If that's even an option, it's against it. Yeah, we
- 38:26Speaker 3: just can't do it anymore. I was already struggling with
- 38:29Speaker 3: planes whatever. Now that I've just panicked the listener, they
- 38:32Speaker 3: were probably just about.
- 38:33Speaker 2: The plane right now, listening to that. Oh my god,
- 38:37Speaker 2: Let's play a game. First.
- 38:38Speaker 3: We're gonna play a game called invite lists.
- 38:40Speaker 2: I love this game. Oh good, you know how it works.
- 38:42Speaker 3: Okay, for the listener who hasn't, I'm going to start
- 38:45Speaker 3: naming a list of celebrities. You get to pick ten,
- 38:47Speaker 3: you say invited or not invited, and you can tell
- 38:49Speaker 3: me why if you want cool.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Once we get to ten, that's the party. Okay.
- 38:53Speaker 3: Judy Dench invited, John cho and Trent Reznor not invited,
- 39:02Speaker 3: Kevin Hart not invited, Adele invited, Laurie Grenere.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Mmm, that's tough. You know. If I'm gonna have one
- 39:15Speaker 2: of them there, it's not gonna be Lauria unfortunately. Who
- 39:17Speaker 2: would have been Barbara?
- 39:18Speaker 4: Barbara, Yeah, but not even because I think she's the
- 39:21Speaker 4: best shark. But I do think that she'd be the
- 39:24Speaker 4: most interesting one to have our own, right. I feel
- 39:26Speaker 4: like she's got stories.
- 39:27Speaker 2: She's got stories, she's a woman of the people. Yeah,
- 39:31Speaker 2: she talked to anybody. Barbara strikes me as a taker anywhere,
- 39:34Speaker 2: kind of go total.
- 39:35Speaker 3: So I know to Laurie not invited, sorry, Laurie, Erica Baudou.
- 39:40Speaker 4: Oh invited, because I know she's not gonna show up,
- 39:42Speaker 4: and if she does, it's going to be right as
- 39:44Speaker 4: the party's ending.
- 39:47Speaker 3: That's a good guest to have somebody that you can
- 39:49Speaker 3: just kind of you don't have to worry about prepping
- 39:50Speaker 3: food for Anthony Hopkins not invited.
- 39:54Speaker 2: Christina Ritchie just for the second space, not invited, Joan
- 40:00Speaker 2: Cusack invited, Kevin Costner not invited. Tim Allen. We got
- 40:06Speaker 2: a couple. Yeah, wow, uh, not invited. That would be
- 40:09Speaker 2: that they're going to their own party.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Yeah, they're already at a party somewhere in the mountains.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Kevin Durant oof not him, not not invited.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Jacob A. Lordie not invited.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Too tall, one of the tallest here, one of our
- 40:23Speaker 3: tallest people. Yeah, Sarah Michelle Geller.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Oh.
- 40:27Speaker 4: And the thing is is I said no to Christina,
- 40:29Speaker 4: so I feel like I have to say no to
- 40:31Speaker 4: Sarah too.
- 40:32Speaker 2: It's only fair, totally fair.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Quentin Tarantino, no party.
- 40:37Speaker 2: No because I'm a shoes off household and I don't
- 40:39Speaker 2: need that energy in my house.
- 40:43Speaker 3: Wow, that's something I don't think anybody's thought about.
- 40:47Speaker 2: I mean, well, they should be. Everybody that's having him over. Yeah.
- 40:52Speaker 3: Laurence Fishburne not invited, Pete Davidson, No, Hillary Swink not invited.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Man not invited, Stockard Channing not invited, Making the Stallion invited.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Bobby Flay, Oh invited. I you have no idea my
- 41:13Speaker 4: relationship with Bobby.
- 41:14Speaker 2: What is it.
- 41:15Speaker 4: I've watched so much of his content on television because
- 41:19Speaker 4: when I am on the road touring as a stand
- 41:20Speaker 4: up comic, I am in a hotel and I am
- 41:22Speaker 4: watching the Food Network on analog. Tell them I'm just
- 41:25Speaker 4: thinking about Hotel TV last night.
- 41:27Speaker 2: It's the best remove choice from my life, absolutely, And
- 41:31Speaker 2: I will sit and watch things I never thought I
- 41:34Speaker 2: would sit and watch the things I'll be exposed to
- 41:36Speaker 2: FX on the weekends.
- 41:38Speaker 4: You know, my ass is sitting down for Battleship. Okay,
- 41:42Speaker 4: and just the last forty five minutes.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't mean the whole thing. It was just
- 41:45Speaker 2: fed to you. Yeah.
- 41:46Speaker 4: I'm bouncing back and forth between Beat Bobby Flay and
- 41:48Speaker 4: Battleship on the commercials.
- 41:50Speaker 2: The best feeling in the war.
- 41:51Speaker 4: Most of the best. So yes, he's invited, for sure.
- 41:54Speaker 4: I know way too much about him.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Jane Seymour, Oh, love doctor Quinn, but not invited. There's
- 42:00Speaker 2: a lot of Republicans seeming people on this list. Do
- 42:02Speaker 2: we think Jane Seymour's Republican? I would venture to guess
- 42:05Speaker 2: that she's at least.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Shane who's the other from Touched by an Angel who's
- 42:11Speaker 3: married to the horror.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Paul McCartney, Oh, not invited, Get over it.
- 42:19Speaker 4: Jeremy Brenner, No again, he's going to Tim Allen, Kevin
- 42:22Speaker 4: Costner's party.
- 42:24Speaker 3: They are going to say they're coming and they're not
- 42:26Speaker 3: going to show up.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Went on a writer invited? Nick Carter No, not invited.
- 42:36Speaker 2: Oh I have Kevin cost he really wants an invite
- 42:40Speaker 2: to this party. Jay Z not invited. Nathan Fielder invited.
- 42:46Speaker 5: All right, that's nine one left.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Kate Winslet not invited, Ringo Star not invited, Bill Gates
- 42:54Speaker 3: not invited, Donald Glover not invited, Tom Selleck.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Wow, George Lucas invited.
- 43:08Speaker 3: We go interesting? Yeah, very interesting.
- 43:11Speaker 2: So many guys that my dad would have loved. Oh yeah,
- 43:13Speaker 2: at a party truly? Likewise, Wow, that's a good list. Yet,
- 43:18Speaker 2: remind me who's going to be at this party? Of list?
- 43:20Speaker 2: Will you tell us who's at the party?
- 43:22Speaker 5: I will, All right, it's going to be Judy Dench,
- 43:24Speaker 5: John Show that, Adele, Erica bad, Joan Cusack, Meghan the Stallion,
- 43:31Speaker 5: Bobby Flay, Winona Ryder, Nathan Fielder, and George Lucas.
- 43:37Speaker 3: It's gonna be a weird conversation is going to be.
- 43:41Speaker 4: I mean, Megan and Adele are running the show. They're
- 43:44Speaker 4: at the center of the table the show.
- 43:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 43:48Speaker 4: That's just like I'm I'm winding up the Ferby and
- 43:51Speaker 4: just letting it gab at that one. That's that's actually
- 43:55Speaker 4: my favorite kind of party when I can sort of
- 43:57Speaker 4: trust that someone else is doing the social heavy.
- 44:00Speaker 3: For me to host a party alone, I'll sleep for days.
- 44:05Speaker 3: I need somebody else handling some of that. Well, you
- 44:08Speaker 3: played that game very well. We're gonna play a game
- 44:09Speaker 3: called Gift or a Curse, And of course I don't
- 44:13Speaker 3: have the document open.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Well, I'll recommend in the meantime, Yeah, please do diet
- 44:17Speaker 4: coke with a little bit of apple cider or vinegar
- 44:19Speaker 4: in it. What It's fucking amazing.
- 44:22Speaker 2: It's the best thing I've ever drank.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Does it have kind of like a lime effect a
- 44:27Speaker 3: little bit?
- 44:28Speaker 4: It is a little bit of a tartness, but it
- 44:30Speaker 4: is like for something about it because you know, a
- 44:33Speaker 4: lot of things are alternative, like sweetener is a lot
- 44:37Speaker 4: of it is apple cider, vinegar based, depending on the drink,
- 44:41Speaker 4: because it's it's it's no, it's very low and it's
- 44:44Speaker 4: like good for you, right, but it tastes great. I
- 44:47Speaker 4: think you can do it with regular coke too. You
- 44:49Speaker 4: can't do it with coke zero.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Oh interesting? Yeah, I wouldn't recommend. How much are you
- 44:53Speaker 2: putting in just a splash?
- 44:54Speaker 4: I would say, like maybe like a two centimeters worth it.
- 44:59Speaker 2: I'm so excited.
- 45:00Speaker 4: My husband puts in a lot more than I do,
- 45:02Speaker 4: and I don't. I don't recommend that at least to start, right.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I like it apple cider and in a diet coke
- 45:08Speaker 2: it is so good. Wow, it's not unlike what they
- 45:11Speaker 2: do in Spain with like coke and red wine. Oh interesting, right,
- 45:15Speaker 2: that makes sense. Coke is just a good a better
- 45:17Speaker 2: bass flavor than you'd expect. Fascinating.
- 45:20Speaker 3: Oh what I mean I've learned something today? Thank God. Okay,
- 45:24Speaker 3: we're gonna play gift a curse. I'm going to name
- 45:25Speaker 3: three things. You tell me if they're a gift to
- 45:27Speaker 3: a curse and why, then I'll say if you're right
- 45:29Speaker 3: or wrong, because there are correct Okay, all right. This
- 45:31Speaker 3: first one is from other surnamed Kristen gift to a
- 45:34Speaker 3: curse seafood cobb salad.
- 45:39Speaker 4: This is so important to know the context of where
- 45:42Speaker 4: we're getting this seafood cob salad.
- 45:44Speaker 2: But I'm gonna say it's a general rule.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Curse why because seafood in and any restaurant in most
- 45:54Speaker 4: places in America is a bad idea. I would say,
- 45:58Speaker 4: because like seafood cups salad is screams to me lots
- 46:01Speaker 4: of like thirty plus items on the menu. And if
- 46:04Speaker 4: I've learned anything from watching Kitchen Nightmares with Gordon Ramsay,
- 46:07Speaker 4: it is that any restaurant with more than like say,
- 46:11Speaker 4: like a dozen or so menu items something's good.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Like it's not good.
- 46:17Speaker 4: Most restaurants should not be able to sustain the number
- 46:21Speaker 4: of menu items that say, the average diner has, because
- 46:25Speaker 4: it's like, how often do you think the seafood copsalad
- 46:28Speaker 4: is getting ordered at a diner?
- 46:29Speaker 1: Right?
- 46:30Speaker 2: How old do you think that seafood is? But it's
- 46:33Speaker 2: been frozen for so long and then you're not enjoying like, oh,
- 46:39Speaker 2: I mean, I've given it away. Cursed and also I
- 46:42Speaker 2: just think cop salad, we've we've got, we got to
- 46:44Speaker 2: a great place with cops salad. I don't need anything new.
- 46:48Speaker 2: It's also like the like creamy dressing with shrip.
- 46:52Speaker 4: I don't know, it seems freemon fish now with a
- 46:56Speaker 4: blue cheese too, like ugh.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Textural nightmare. Okay.
- 47:01Speaker 3: This next one is from a listener named Andrea. A
- 47:03Speaker 3: gift or a curse being welcomed to a restaurant by
- 47:05Speaker 3: your server, then overhearing your server give the same welcome
- 47:08Speaker 3: speech verbatim to nearby diners who were seated after you.
- 47:12Speaker 4: I'm gonna say gift because I think it releases you
- 47:17Speaker 4: from trying to form a connection with your server, because
- 47:21Speaker 4: that's the pressure that I feel when I go out
- 47:23Speaker 4: to restaurants and I have a moment that I think
- 47:26Speaker 4: is a genuine individual moment between me and the server,
- 47:29Speaker 4: and then I go, oh, God, now I have to
- 47:32Speaker 4: maintain this connection through the entire meal.
- 47:35Speaker 2: And to hear that, I would go, oh, he's just
- 47:38Speaker 2: doing his job. He's not interested in a friendship with me,
- 47:41Speaker 2: Thank god, because I have the position has been filled.
- 47:44Speaker 2: I have too many.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Already adult friendship yeah correct, Okay, yes, I absolutely think
- 47:52Speaker 3: this is a gift. I like, I just I need
- 47:55Speaker 3: a barrier. I need to know that this is your coming.
- 47:59Speaker 3: You're going to doing your job professionally. I'll be getting
- 48:02Speaker 3: my food on time. And I'm glad that they're not
- 48:05Speaker 3: being treated any better than me.
- 48:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, it's the same with the guys on rentmen.
- 48:11Speaker 2: You know you're coming, You're doing your job, that's all
- 48:14Speaker 2: we need.
- 48:16Speaker 3: Okay, finally, this is from a listener named Douglas. Gift
- 48:19Speaker 3: a curse when you are the planner of your friend group.
- 48:25Speaker 4: Okay, wow, I'm gonna ultimately say this is a gift
- 48:32Speaker 4: that it often is mistaken for a curse, you know,
- 48:36Speaker 4: if the person sees it as a gift or a curse,
- 48:38Speaker 4: depending on how they came to that position, Because this
- 48:40Speaker 4: is a position that is often thrust on people by
- 48:43Speaker 4: less organized, more lucy goosey flakes onto the just sort
- 48:49Speaker 4: of grading on that curve the most responsible of the bunch,
- 48:52Speaker 4: not taking into.
- 48:54Speaker 2: Account their desire for the role.
- 48:56Speaker 4: This is also often taken on by someone who does
- 49:00Speaker 4: not want to leave it up to those yahoos and
- 49:04Speaker 4: crazy people to plan the vacation, because you know what
- 49:06Speaker 4: kind of vacation you're going to get if you allow,
- 49:10Speaker 4: you know, Matt to do all the planning. And so
- 49:14Speaker 4: I am oftentimes the planner of my group and the
- 49:17Speaker 4: organizer of my group, and I think I do a
- 49:19Speaker 4: really good job, and I really I as stressful as
- 49:22Speaker 4: it can be.
- 49:23Speaker 2: I would rather have it done by me correctly. Yeah,
- 49:26Speaker 2: And it just kind of comes naturally, or do you. Yeah,
- 49:29Speaker 2: and I and I volunteer distribute. It was not thrust
- 49:32Speaker 2: upon me. So like I knew what I was getting into.
- 49:35Speaker 4: I knew the downsides that would come along with the role.
- 49:39Speaker 4: But I still weighing that against the you know, idea
- 49:43Speaker 4: of ending up at you know, a drag brunch in
- 49:49Speaker 4: you know, New Orleans.
- 49:52Speaker 2: Would I would much rather have control wrong curse.
- 49:58Speaker 3: Oh, this is the last thing in the world I
- 49:59Speaker 3: will Yeah.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I mean I did give the reasons for both.
- 50:03Speaker 3: You're making yourself the target every I mean everything that
- 50:07Speaker 3: goes wrong. I mean, how could I possibly enjoy anything
- 50:10Speaker 3: that's planned. I'll just feel the responsibility if I get
- 50:16Speaker 3: If I look at my phone and it has more
- 50:17Speaker 3: than six texts, I shut down.
- 50:19Speaker 4: Yeah, we're very different people, because for me, if something
- 50:22Speaker 4: goes wrong, then even better, I get to be a martyr.
- 50:26Speaker 4: I get to be a victim, and that I think
- 50:29Speaker 4: is that's a very good, greatest feeling. That is a
- 50:32Speaker 4: very I'm not giving you the point, but that's an
- 50:34Speaker 4: excellent defense. I'm always looking for reasons to be the part.
- 50:39Speaker 4: We got two out of three.
- 50:40Speaker 2: Not too bad. I feel good about it. Elis, do
- 50:42Speaker 2: you have a gift to a curse? Today? I can
- 50:44Speaker 2: have one one moment.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Ellis is going to now do one for both of us,
- 50:47Speaker 3: and we'll both answer. Then they have the correct answer.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Who decides the listener? You kind of the.
- 50:52Speaker 3: Universe, got it? It's kind of just true.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Yeah, if you know what I mean.
- 50:56Speaker 3: Objective, there's kind of just no arguing I'm whether what
- 51:02Speaker 3: I say is correct or not.
- 51:03Speaker 2: It's just I'm a conduit essentially, all right.
- 51:08Speaker 5: Gift or a curse? A grown man playing air guitar?
- 51:12Speaker 2: Hmm, that's a curse.
- 51:14Speaker 4: Why because I don't need to know about the everything
- 51:19Speaker 4: that didn't happen in that man's life to bring him
- 51:22Speaker 4: to this place, and that it just is like it
- 51:26Speaker 4: is like that sentence, a grown man playing air guitar
- 51:30Speaker 4: is for sale.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Baby, She's never.
- 51:31Speaker 4: Worn to me because it tells a full story without
- 51:37Speaker 4: you know, but economically, you know, you just like it's
- 51:41Speaker 4: it depresses you, it makes you sad, and you don't
- 51:44Speaker 4: need to know further details about it for that.
- 51:46Speaker 2: To be true. I'm going to say gift.
- 51:49Speaker 3: I think that if that's a short story, it's a celebration.
- 51:53Speaker 3: I'm happy for this person. I think it's a thrill
- 51:56Speaker 3: and good for him, good for him for is rocking out.
- 52:04Speaker 2: It's a gift, yes.
- 52:05Speaker 5: Because I think if more grown men were playing air guitar,
- 52:08Speaker 5: we'd have a lot less problems in.
- 52:09Speaker 4: That they'd be doing keep their hands busy with air
- 52:12Speaker 4: guitar rather than whatever else they're getting into.
- 52:16Speaker 2: You know what.
- 52:16Speaker 4: I agree ultimately, I and framing it that way fully agree.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Yeah, that really makes there's competitions, you know, oh yeah,
- 52:24Speaker 3: and the people are like they're actually good.
- 52:27Speaker 4: It is one of those things where you look at
- 52:28Speaker 4: somebody who's doing it at a competition level and you're like, okay,
- 52:31Speaker 4: well this is art.
- 52:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:32Speaker 3: It's like, oh that's something that I didn't imagine could
- 52:35Speaker 3: be good.
- 52:35Speaker 4: Yeah, certainly, not something that you felt like someone could
- 52:39Speaker 4: make seem difficult, right.
- 52:41Speaker 2: You know, it feels like everyone should just be able
- 52:43Speaker 2: to it is on the same level. It seems like
- 52:45Speaker 2: sort of the appeal of air guitars that anyone.
- 52:47Speaker 4: Could doesn't require the years of training that guitar requires
- 52:51Speaker 4: from you.
- 52:52Speaker 2: But ultimately it's mine. Yeah, that's true. More it's Comedia
- 52:56Speaker 2: dell ar.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Okay, let's answer this her question really quickly. People are
- 53:01Speaker 3: writing into I said no gifts at gmail dot com,
- 53:04Speaker 3: and then I end up kind of responsible.
- 53:05Speaker 2: For their lives.
- 53:07Speaker 3: This says, what would you get as a gift for
- 53:09Speaker 3: a man who is turning forty five, does not want
- 53:11Speaker 3: additional clothing and is specific about what he wears, watches
- 53:15Speaker 3: his caloric intake, and has enough disposable income to get
- 53:18Speaker 3: anything he fancies.
- 53:20Speaker 2: That's from Rita. I'm an excellent gift giver. Are you
- 53:23Speaker 2: really really?
- 53:24Speaker 4: I mean I've yeah, im bodied my husband every single
- 53:27Speaker 4: year that we have been doing.
- 53:28Speaker 2: What are you getting in with gifts?
- 53:30Speaker 4: I commissioned a piece of art in this style of
- 53:33Speaker 4: his favorite comic book artists as of him as a superhero.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Oh my god, I flew in. When he first moved
- 53:39Speaker 4: to La from San Francisco. I surprised him by flying
- 53:42Speaker 4: in his two best friends from San Francisco.
- 53:44Speaker 2: Taking them out with and surprising him with that.
- 53:46Speaker 4: Our first date was at a piano bar in San
- 53:48Speaker 4: Francisco called Martuoni's, where it's very like, very simple. You
- 53:52Speaker 4: just go up, you tell the piano player what you
- 53:53Speaker 4: want to sing, and you sing it. And we both
- 53:54Speaker 4: sang songs to each other that night. And he's always
- 53:56Speaker 4: lamented the fact that La doesn't really have a bar
- 53:58Speaker 4: like this, right, and it's always and even the idea
- 54:01Speaker 4: of it's kind of a nightmare in La because it's like, yeah, exactly,
- 54:05Speaker 4: because the charm of it in San Francisco is this
- 54:08Speaker 4: girl who is getting her life singing define gravity is
- 54:11Speaker 4: a project manager. Yes you know like that, she's not
- 54:14Speaker 4: trying to make it. So I rented out a bar
- 54:18Speaker 4: the Dresden and in Las Fields in hired a piano
- 54:22Speaker 4: player and surprised him with all of his friends from
- 54:26Speaker 4: San Francisco and like across the country and our friends
- 54:29Speaker 4: here in La. And we had a full night of
- 54:31Speaker 4: where we got to have our piano bar.
- 54:33Speaker 2: This is unbelievable.
- 54:34Speaker 3: And meanwhile he's making you crash your car.
- 54:36Speaker 2: I got him voice lessons.
- 54:38Speaker 4: With a Broadway vocal coach because he's not I mean
- 54:41Speaker 4: he used to sing a lot, but then he had
- 54:43Speaker 4: node surgery, and he's said the same thing that happened
- 54:46Speaker 4: to Julie Andrews happened to him, and so he's he
- 54:49Speaker 4: has to relearn how to use his voice and he's
- 54:51Speaker 4: always singing.
- 54:52Speaker 2: And so I got him that.
- 54:54Speaker 3: And it almost feels like you're playing a mental game
- 54:56Speaker 3: with Yeah, I want to destroy Yeah, exactly. So you're
- 55:01Speaker 3: very good at giving gifts. This guy's turning forty five.
- 55:03Speaker 2: You do experiential, That's what I think.
- 55:05Speaker 3: I think you go experiential right like after thirty I
- 55:09Speaker 3: think you hit a like object.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Yeah, it gets really difficult.
- 55:13Speaker 4: No, Yeah, I can't think of many like things that
- 55:17Speaker 4: I've given like my nieces and nephews, I pay for
- 55:20Speaker 4: the karate.
- 55:21Speaker 2: Classes for the last few years's and stuff like that.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Like obviously, like he probably is not interested in karate classes,
- 55:26Speaker 4: but like if you can think of something you know
- 55:30Speaker 4: he's an interest of his, or even something that he
- 55:33Speaker 4: already does, and think of a fun way to present
- 55:36Speaker 4: it to him. Yes, it's aphemeral, Yes it may not
- 55:38Speaker 4: have the lasting value as a sweater, but I think
- 55:43Speaker 4: a lot of people like when they know that you
- 55:45Speaker 4: put more thought into it than as simple like he
- 55:47Speaker 4: likes this, I'll buy him this, right, And it's more
- 55:50Speaker 4: it requires a little bit more second.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Third thought thinking.
- 55:53Speaker 4: I think they appreciate it kayaking trip, kayaking trip lessons
- 55:58Speaker 4: and something that he's interested in learning. I mean it
- 56:02Speaker 4: requires The thing about those gifts too, is that it
- 56:04Speaker 4: requires a knowledge of what the person likes and is
- 56:08Speaker 4: interested in. That's not always apparent in a superficial relationship.
- 56:12Speaker 2: Right.
- 56:13Speaker 3: And I think that you could really surprise somebody by
- 56:15Speaker 3: giving them something that seems like something they almost wouldn't
- 56:18Speaker 3: even think of wanting to do.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 56:21Speaker 4: Well, and I will say this so my husband for
- 56:22Speaker 4: my first birthday when we were together, he sort of
- 56:26Speaker 4: as a joke, sort of legitimately, my favorite song of
- 56:30Speaker 4: all time is the Never Enough Remix circuit remix from
- 56:34Speaker 4: Greatest Showmen, a song that was the backing track famously
- 56:37Speaker 4: to that fistfight that happened in Mikinos between those two
- 56:39Speaker 4: gay men. But I always go on about how I
- 56:41Speaker 4: love this song and how silly it is. And he
- 56:44Speaker 4: for our first for my birthday, our first year together,
- 56:47Speaker 4: he contacted people that I did not even know he
- 56:50Speaker 4: knew about friends from all across my life, in every
- 56:55Speaker 4: across the world, from different periods of my life. They
- 56:58Speaker 4: all dressed like me and danced like me while lip
- 57:01Speaker 4: syncing that song, and he made us he cut it
- 57:04Speaker 4: together and like it was at once like the most
- 57:08Speaker 4: amazing thing, but also just to see how different friends.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Approached the source.
- 57:13Speaker 4: So it's like such a funny window into their psyche too,
- 57:16Speaker 4: like who they are as people, and it's it's I
- 57:19Speaker 4: fell to my knees and and cried because I was
- 57:22Speaker 4: like this, no one has ever thought about.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Me so overwhelming.
- 57:25Speaker 3: Yeah, so she gets him the official soundtrack Greatest Showman
- 57:29Speaker 3: Soundtrack on CD.
- 57:31Speaker 2: I think that's the perfect gift for Burnett burn It.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Don't even get them the rich because then it seems
- 57:36Speaker 2: more personal.
- 57:37Speaker 3: All right, you can write right on it. Wow, to
- 57:40Speaker 3: have a CD Burner, My god.
- 57:43Speaker 2: That was the culture for so oh should have I
- 57:46Speaker 2: think that that was so many things that death kept
- 57:49Speaker 2: for Coody Cutie. Transatlanticism burned for me by Blake Miller
- 57:53Speaker 2: in the seventh period, and that changed the course of
- 57:56Speaker 2: what music I like. Yeah, of course, yeah, we need
- 57:58Speaker 2: to get back to burning CD.
- 58:00Speaker 3: I bet that's gonna we'll circle back to.
- 58:02Speaker 4: This something less meaningful about a playlist on Spotify if.
- 58:06Speaker 2: It's a very low lift.
- 58:07Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a very I like putting together a playlist,
- 58:10Speaker 3: but it requires almost nothing of you.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Well, we answered.
- 58:14Speaker 3: Rita's question more than perfectly. I've won an award. The
- 58:19Speaker 3: podcast is kind of leveled up just within the I.
- 58:22Speaker 4: Think you're I think you could probably get like a
- 58:24Speaker 4: queer to or a glad How do you do that?
- 58:27Speaker 2: You're like, send a coupon in the mail. I think
- 58:29Speaker 2: it's just sort of sort of no. I listen.
- 58:33Speaker 4: I am appreciative of every piece of attention and press
- 58:36Speaker 4: I have gotten because of those awards, but it is
- 58:40Speaker 4: sort of like you just have to be around long
- 58:42Speaker 4: enough as a gay person.
- 58:43Speaker 2: You've just gotta do not fuck it up.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Yeah, just campaign by being a gay person.
- 58:47Speaker 4: Is because I mean, honestly, sometimes that feels like enough
- 58:51Speaker 4: to persevere and simply exist in this industry.
- 58:54Speaker 3: Oh my god, started on my life. My life is
- 58:59Speaker 3: harder than everyone else's. So I deserve a Queer to
- 59:02Speaker 3: You award exactly Queer to You Committee reach out. I'm
- 59:07Speaker 3: so glad you could come to me.
- 59:08Speaker 2: I'm so glad too.
- 59:09Speaker 4: I've been wanting to come back on this since I
- 59:12Speaker 4: did it on Zoom, as I want to redo everything
- 59:14Speaker 4: that I did on Zoom.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Likewise, those were some bad days for just being a person.
- 59:22Speaker 4: I came out of the pandemic and with the most
- 59:25Speaker 4: severe writer's block that I then blamed on my medication,
- 59:28Speaker 4: and I was like, I can't write anything, no new ideas.
- 59:31Speaker 2: It must be the medication.
- 59:33Speaker 4: Little not even thinking that, oh, you were just inside
- 59:36Speaker 4: for a year in stasis with not really living a life,
- 59:39Speaker 4: like of course you had writer's block, and like, why
- 59:42Speaker 4: It's one of the many dumb decisions I've made in
- 59:46Speaker 4: my life, was blaming it.
- 59:48Speaker 2: On the medication. Stay off Reddit when you have questions
- 59:50Speaker 2: about what may or may not issue.
- 59:53Speaker 3: Yes, well, you're welcome back anytime, and it is an
- 59:57Speaker 3: award winning show, so it's worth coming around.

- 1:00:50Speaker 2: The line man? Did you hear?
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: Funa man? Myself perfectly clear? But yere, I guess my home.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: You gotta come to me empty? And I said, no, guests,
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: your own presence is presents enough. I already had too
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: much stuff, So how do you
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: Dare to surbey me
