- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunts Rutt Fresh Radio bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:09Speaker 1: your hosts, Casey Smith Tyler Jones. Bird. It's cold outside
- 0:15Speaker 1: with Christmas fast approaching. I know it's hard to get
- 0:17Speaker 1: in the woods, but hunters around the country are finding
- 0:20Speaker 1: ways to make it work. Especially with the cold weather.
- 0:23Speaker 1: It is time still to get in the woods and
- 0:25Speaker 1: feel some of those late season tags. This is Rough
- 0:37Speaker 1: Fresh Radio. I'm your host, Casey Smith. I do my
- 0:39Speaker 1: best to sound cool, and I've got a cool guy
- 0:41Speaker 1: here with me. His name is Mark Kenyon. Mark. Welcome
- 0:44Speaker 1: to Texas. Tyler Jones is here as well, he said, welcome.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Just find that time. Thanks man, and thanks for having
- 0:52Speaker 1: me in Texas. Here with you're welcome, Welcome, Welcome, welcome. Um.
- 0:57Speaker 1: We've done our best to eat Mexican food every meal
- 0:59Speaker 1: of the day. You might have just slaved me tonight
- 1:04Speaker 1: like I'm about to slay the dragon. Hunt, you slay
- 1:07Speaker 1: the dragon with the with the full They have something
- 1:10Speaker 1: here called the full donkey. Yeah, and we ate the
- 1:13Speaker 1: full donkey. We did. Everybody except Eric got a full
- 1:16Speaker 1: donkey and he's had burrito envy yea. He told us
- 1:20Speaker 1: on the way home. So Donkey's just kicking in my belly, right,
- 1:23Speaker 1: So I just in there, just he hauling around. Uh. Legitimately,
- 1:27Speaker 1: that was a burrito that was more than a foot long.
- 1:29Speaker 1: That might have been like sixteen inches of bridle. That
- 1:32Speaker 1: would make Jared jealous for sure, way more than full
- 1:34Speaker 1: of Uh. So it was a tasty treat. We've been
- 1:39Speaker 1: doing some hunting in Texas which is really exciting. We
- 1:42Speaker 1: got some folks today to talk about some hunting around
- 1:45Speaker 1: the country. One of the big themes, it seems, is
- 1:47Speaker 1: cold weather, and uh, cold weather is controversial. Did y'all
- 1:51Speaker 1: realize that I didn't until the day And when it
- 1:53Speaker 1: comes to dear movement, cold weather is controversial. Who's does that?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Um me? Um? Well, I would say that some. So
- 2:01Speaker 1: there's organizations out there and who we've interviewed some. We
- 2:04Speaker 1: actually have a guy from the India on today to
- 2:07Speaker 1: talk about hunting in Georgia. Um and their studies out
- 2:11Speaker 1: that say that cold weather does not affect deer movement,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and deer move the same cold weather, I know. Yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 1: And you know what the problem is, Mark, I think
- 2:20Speaker 1: is that they are not taking into account what time
- 2:23Speaker 1: of day in the twenty four hour period the movement happens,
- 2:26Speaker 1: they're measuring different stuff. So does the total amount of
- 2:30Speaker 1: movement change? Probably not, I believe that, But does when
- 2:34Speaker 1: that movement happens, or does the you know, the distance
- 2:38Speaker 1: traveled over the course of that most important hour for
- 2:41Speaker 1: us change? Maybe? Or does the specific or like even
- 2:46Speaker 1: what about a study that looked at just bucks over
- 2:49Speaker 1: three years old or something like that. Um, absolutely, there's
- 2:52Speaker 1: a there's a lot of data points that are hard
- 2:54Speaker 1: to keep up with, and I think they do a
- 2:56Speaker 1: pretty good job over there getting some information out and
- 2:58Speaker 1: stuff for sure time, But I think that um, as
- 3:02Speaker 1: a hunter, I can probably go out there and make
- 3:04Speaker 1: a different assessment at than what might be seen. But
- 3:07Speaker 1: I don't know, it's kind of interesting to think that. UM,
- 3:12Speaker 1: it gives you hope that you always have a chance
- 3:14Speaker 1: even if it's not cold. I guess you know that
- 3:16Speaker 1: so and like you don't need cold weather. But I
- 3:21Speaker 1: don't think anyone who's spent a lot of time on
- 3:23Speaker 1: the woods would deny the fact that, Man, when you
- 3:26Speaker 1: get the certain days like that, it's just different. It
- 3:29Speaker 1: is special, and we all have seen those days, no doubt.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I mean, we're not out there, uh, perceiving deer movement
- 3:39Speaker 1: in the night, so it doesn't matter to us. What
- 3:43Speaker 1: matters is daylight movement. I've actually came really close, like
- 3:47Speaker 1: throughout my hunting career, to shutting the nine time photos
- 3:50Speaker 1: off on show cameras because it means that little to you.
- 3:54Speaker 1: But it's it's still something I like to hang onto
- 3:56Speaker 1: because you at least if you get a picture of
- 3:59Speaker 1: him at two am, you know he's still alive, so
- 4:01Speaker 1: that's like a reason to keep him on. But otherwise,
- 4:03Speaker 1: like you know, the nighttime movement just isn't hardly anything. Um.
- 4:07Speaker 1: People also like kind of looking back on this rut
- 4:11Speaker 1: all right, um, like this this season, so this season,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but this rut, I guess you know, Um, this is
- 4:18Speaker 1: rut fresh and we start doing rout fresh in September,
- 4:22Speaker 1: so it's all the rut. Who's rutting in September? I
- 4:25Speaker 1: don't know. But why don't we call it refresh in September?
- 4:27Speaker 1: Why don't we call it? Guy? That's right, that's somebody
- 4:34Speaker 1: for our time. Uh. But so let's look back at
- 4:38Speaker 1: the deer season. This is the if y'all don't know,
- 4:40Speaker 1: this is the final episode of refresh on this on
- 4:42Speaker 1: the year. We've had a ton of fun doing this thing.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Really appreciate you all listening. Uh, since we got Mark
- 4:46Speaker 1: here would be a good time to maybe evaluate some
- 4:48Speaker 1: of this because he's hunting some different states than us.
- 4:51Speaker 1: What's one of your big takeaways from the season as
- 4:53Speaker 1: far as deer hunting goes, Like, what was a theme
- 4:56Speaker 1: of motif for the year for you? My biggest rut
- 4:58Speaker 1: Fresh takeaway this year, it's just something I got to
- 5:01Speaker 1: illustrate for the listeners real fast. It's going to be
- 5:04Speaker 1: a joke before because this is gonna change people's like
- 5:10Speaker 1: listening experience because when I listened to the podcast, I
- 5:13Speaker 1: kind of envisioned, like you guys sitting in the truck
- 5:15Speaker 1: talking or whatever doing this. But right now now I
- 5:18Speaker 1: realize what's really going on when you guys do your
- 5:21Speaker 1: Fresh radio Casey is like cross Like it's sitting on
- 5:24Speaker 1: top of a table like a Genie or like a
- 5:26Speaker 1: big Buddha or something rocking back and far. Think about
- 5:37Speaker 1: that next time you listen to Fresh. Um. But as
- 5:40Speaker 1: far as big themes for this year, this year's season, man,
- 5:46Speaker 1: I don't know. I think one thing that stands out
- 5:48Speaker 1: to me, and I actually want to do some research
- 5:50Speaker 1: on this. I'm going to Um, but I feel like
- 5:53Speaker 1: this year there was a particularly extended, long hot period
- 5:59Speaker 1: during which should have been primoe days of the rut.
- 6:04Speaker 1: When you say hot, you mean temperature, yes, yes, and
- 6:08Speaker 1: really November right, like everybody experienced everywhere from that like
- 6:13Speaker 1: that first like ten days or so was brutally hot
- 6:18Speaker 1: for much of the country. Um. I've never had so
- 6:21Speaker 1: many days like that where I literally hunted, I think
- 6:23Speaker 1: eight straight days in seventy or hotter in the upper Midwest. Um,
- 6:28Speaker 1: we left on We left a place on November nighte
- 6:30Speaker 1: with like days left on the hunt, just because we
- 6:33Speaker 1: were like, yeah, let's just go home and see our
- 6:35Speaker 1: family for a few days. And there was cold weather
- 6:38Speaker 1: on the horizon. Yeah. So I mean when it comes
- 6:40Speaker 1: to like the rut itself like that, Like even though
- 6:44Speaker 1: people always can like I killed a buck when it
- 6:46Speaker 1: was eighty degrees this year November one, So it can happen,
- 6:49Speaker 1: but it's never as good as it could have been.
- 6:51Speaker 1: It's never as much fun when you have like that
- 6:53Speaker 1: much more you know, reduced time periods of the of
- 6:58Speaker 1: the movement you're hoping for. So the big takeaway for
- 7:00Speaker 1: the rut for me was like, man, that was the
- 7:02Speaker 1: big thing. Like that took you know, sevent of my
- 7:05Speaker 1: rut hunts this year. We're kind of like because of that,
- 7:09Speaker 1: he's just super super fast. The five. The last thing
- 7:13Speaker 1: I was gonna say it was like, I feel like
- 7:15Speaker 1: this is a trend, Like there's been a lot of
- 7:18Speaker 1: hot ruts over the last decade. It feels like, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: I want to see if that's just like me thinking that,
- 7:23Speaker 1: or if that's true or not. Then so I'm in
- 7:26Speaker 1: the words of or in your vernacular, I'm fixing to
- 7:29Speaker 1: do some research and crunch the numbers. You don't say
- 7:31Speaker 1: fixing two, y' don't say fixing two. I thought that's
- 7:35Speaker 1: just American thing, and it it was a sudden thing.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Went to Coach Rica one time and he was there.
- 7:39Speaker 1: People there were kind of like as dound in the
- 7:42Speaker 1: at the idea of fixing two. Yeah, you know, like
- 7:45Speaker 1: the rut stuff is also similar to what we're talking
- 7:48Speaker 1: about earlier with like perceived hunter perceived movement right where
- 7:53Speaker 1: like we we got to hear from hunters across the
- 7:57Speaker 1: country throughout this rut fresh thing running this thing this
- 8:00Speaker 1: this year and then also we were out a ton
- 8:04Speaker 1: in November in different states, you know, different climates, different habitats,
- 8:08Speaker 1: all this stuff, And I mean it is undoubtedly, I mean,
- 8:14Speaker 1: it's there's no doubt that there that there were different
- 8:17Speaker 1: there was a different perceived rut by hunters this year overall,
- 8:21Speaker 1: Like everybody we talked to, the first ten days in
- 8:24Speaker 1: November pretty much were uh not even close to the
- 8:28Speaker 1: best days of the rut. I mean, like that's that
- 8:31Speaker 1: I guess it would be the like after the first
- 8:34Speaker 1: ten days to like twenty was really when most everybody's
- 8:38Speaker 1: rut was the best, especially like those dates. And so
- 8:45Speaker 1: like this is one of those things where like you
- 8:47Speaker 1: see the same research that like says, uh it's based
- 8:51Speaker 1: off dinoral period, you know, so it's like uh the
- 8:54Speaker 1: photo period or whatever. It's uh, you know, the length
- 8:56Speaker 1: of the time of the day, and that's when the
- 8:58Speaker 1: extra cycle is based off of. And that never changes, right,
- 9:02Speaker 1: But you know, actually some weird theories about that they're
- 9:05Speaker 1: pretty cool, but like, overall, uh, there's no doubt that
- 9:08Speaker 1: we perceived it differently across the country this year. So
- 9:12Speaker 1: you know, this is something that like, this is a
- 9:15Speaker 1: discussion that needs to probably continue at some point, But like,
- 9:17Speaker 1: how do we how do we balance these things? Of well,
- 9:21Speaker 1: of course the science says this, but I'm just telling
- 9:23Speaker 1: you that I've talked to four dudes a week for
- 9:26Speaker 1: however many weeks, and there's no doubt that this is
- 9:29Speaker 1: the way everybody has been saying. I wouldn't I wouldn't
- 9:33Speaker 1: doubt that, like even a year like this, the peak
- 9:38Speaker 1: of breeding might have still been when it usually is.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But again, it comes down to what do we experience
- 9:43Speaker 1: as hunters. So, all right, does the peak of running
- 9:48Speaker 1: activity hunter sea change from year to year? That certainly
- 9:51Speaker 1: could be. And so like the visible daylight, chasing, cruising,
- 9:56Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, I think that does shift. And
- 9:59Speaker 1: how he figure out what that is? Well, what makes
- 10:01Speaker 1: that you can have chasing? I think part of the
- 10:05Speaker 1: season could be just non existent, Like chasing in peak,
- 10:09Speaker 1: breeding can happen at the same time, you know, in
- 10:11Speaker 1: a in a year like it doesn't always we try
- 10:13Speaker 1: to put things in a box where it's like, oh,
- 10:14Speaker 1: they're gonna chase for a week and then they're actually
- 10:16Speaker 1: gonna lock down and breed for a week. Maybe lockdown
- 10:19Speaker 1: and breeding and chasing all happened the same time because
- 10:21Speaker 1: the weather was nice. Yeah, I feel like I feel
- 10:24Speaker 1: like weather, And I don't know about the moon stuff.
- 10:26Speaker 1: A lot of people say the moon stuff maybe impacts it,
- 10:28Speaker 1: but I feel weather is the biggest thing for me.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Will that will tell you, like how much will we
- 10:33Speaker 1: see during daylight versus not? And how like just how
- 10:36Speaker 1: intensees it get? Like how comfortable are these deer cruising
- 10:39Speaker 1: and run around all over the place like they're gonna
- 10:41Speaker 1: bring no matter what. But maybe they're gonna do it
- 10:43Speaker 1: in the dark when it's twenties years cooler and they're
- 10:46Speaker 1: gonna be chilled out, you know, in the middle of
- 10:48Speaker 1: the day when we want to see them running around
- 10:49Speaker 1: what they're just don't want to do. It's my personal
- 10:51Speaker 1: anecdotes from this season on that front. Would would be uh,
- 10:57Speaker 1: one of the things that I would kind of bring
- 10:59Speaker 1: up kind of what you were talking about. We like
- 11:01Speaker 1: to think of our years in our calendar days as
- 11:05Speaker 1: fixed points, and I mean we all understand the concept
- 11:09Speaker 1: of a leap here um, but because of that, think
- 11:15Speaker 1: about it this way. Sometimes Thanksgivings on November, sometimes Thanksgivings
- 11:20Speaker 1: on the twenty six of November. The rut also can
- 11:23Speaker 1: deviate that much like November seven is not always November seven. Um,
- 11:28Speaker 1: so we could have a weird year this year where
- 11:32Speaker 1: it's just swinging as far into the month of November
- 11:35Speaker 1: on our calendar as possible, but to the deer, it's
- 11:37Speaker 1: the same exact or whatever. Yea. So because and the
- 11:43Speaker 1: reason I believe that that possibly was the case is
- 11:46Speaker 1: because I was on the ground and multiple states through
- 11:49Speaker 1: all this and observed like, uh, I guess it is
- 11:53Speaker 1: November two. I stalked the big buck uh, and we
- 11:58Speaker 1: had the weird thing go on. Yeah, but last year
- 12:01Speaker 1: or I guess, let me say, one stalk this deer.
- 12:04Speaker 1: He was ondo is very hard on November two, just
- 12:07Speaker 1: tending doing the thing this year. He was betted by
- 12:11Speaker 1: himself with with dry hawks on November two, so he
- 12:16Speaker 1: was doing something different. And then I killed a deer
- 12:19Speaker 1: on um uh, let's see November five who was cruising
- 12:25Speaker 1: but not with those um and kind of it was
- 12:28Speaker 1: just kind of chill cruising. And then I killed on
- 12:32Speaker 1: November eight in the Midwest like some subtle bragging, no no,
- 12:37Speaker 1: no no. I was kind of feeling that the first
- 12:40Speaker 1: of the first time I've ever killed two deer November
- 12:42Speaker 1: pretty much so but like that deer on November eight
- 12:46Speaker 1: was um in really good shape and hardly been running
- 12:48Speaker 1: and and just wasn't beat up. He had broken times,
- 12:52Speaker 1: but I think they do that earlier sometimes. And then
- 12:53Speaker 1: we left on the night because things were super slow.
- 12:56Speaker 1: And then I we came at like four or five
- 12:58Speaker 1: days later and it was same place and it was unreal.
- 13:02Speaker 1: I mean it was It's cool and another thing to
- 13:06Speaker 1: bring this back to refresh the thing that I noticed
- 13:09Speaker 1: this season, and this is our first year doing refresh.
- 13:12Speaker 1: This might be the way it goes. Hunters in general
- 13:15Speaker 1: are an optimistic bunch. Uh. They might be pessimistic when
- 13:19Speaker 1: they're telling stories or whatever, but when they go to
- 13:21Speaker 1: give you a number of one m, it's always way
- 13:23Speaker 1: higher than it should be. I like how you like
- 13:25Speaker 1: dog on them a little bit. You're like man like
- 13:27Speaker 1: like I like your optimism. But then like later, like
- 13:30Speaker 1: in an intro like man, I'll tell you what. These
- 13:32Speaker 1: guys are super optimistic, but really you know a two
- 13:35Speaker 1: or three. So we had this thing we call the
- 13:37Speaker 1: Midwest six. We haven't talked about this on that, but
- 13:40Speaker 1: if you're from the Midwest and you don't know really
- 13:41Speaker 1: what to say, you're gonna say six for sure, that's
- 13:44Speaker 1: what it's like. Oh yeah, it's it's gonna be pretty good. Well,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you're in Illinois. Even if it sucks, it's still better
- 13:49Speaker 1: than everybody else. It's exactly right, man. So, um, we
- 13:54Speaker 1: got a bunch of guys from around to give us
- 13:56Speaker 1: some good reports from across the country. Guys are still
- 13:59Speaker 1: out there hunting. Uh, Mark Kenyon, You're still out there hunting.
- 14:02Speaker 1: So I would like for you to give us the
- 14:03Speaker 1: honorary one through tin rating of rut action in Texas
- 14:08Speaker 1: at the moment. Yeah. So we're in Texas and I've
- 14:10Speaker 1: only had it one day here so far. But based
- 14:14Speaker 1: on what I've seen, man, that donkey is just donkeys
- 14:20Speaker 1: churning in my gut. What I have seen is that
- 14:24Speaker 1: the rut is going. Um. I wasn't seeing chasing or
- 14:28Speaker 1: anything today, but I was seeing cruising Bucks absolutely and
- 14:31Speaker 1: I was seeing Bucks locked on dos. Um it was
- 14:35Speaker 1: good activity. So I'm gonna give you higher than the Midwest. Yeah,
- 14:41Speaker 1: and I feel like that's warranted, Like when you're seeing
- 14:43Speaker 1: cruising and Bucks on does and you know I saw
- 14:47Speaker 1: two shooters today. Um, I feel like that's like a
- 14:53Speaker 1: word eight categories. I don't hold that against you. Is
- 14:57Speaker 1: that fair? Yeah? I think so for sure, And it
- 14:59Speaker 1: matches up with what it should be, So I think
- 15:02Speaker 1: for sure innate's fair. Now, Todler and I didn't have
- 15:04Speaker 1: as good of an evening, but the evenings across the
- 15:07Speaker 1: board for our carew was a little bit low. But
- 15:09Speaker 1: the mornings are really nice. And I think that, um
- 15:12Speaker 1: this is my personal thought, but places that have well
- 15:16Speaker 1: defined food sources and and bed to feed top patterns,
- 15:19Speaker 1: I think that evenings are really nice. A place like
- 15:21Speaker 1: we're hunting right now in Texas, where it's generally just
- 15:25Speaker 1: a roaming browsing tope food, the evenings are kind of
- 15:28Speaker 1: tough because they can just stand up and eat where
- 15:29Speaker 1: they're at, and it's it was so quiet to say
- 15:31Speaker 1: it sure was, man, terrible winds and stuff, which is
- 15:34Speaker 1: a December thing. Man. That's one of the things that's
- 15:36Speaker 1: tough about December is that in the evenings it will
- 15:38Speaker 1: get the wind will die, and you'll have thermals that
- 15:41Speaker 1: are whirling around. But I can't kill him from the coup,
- 15:44Speaker 1: So you gotta get out there. Let's hear what the
- 15:46Speaker 1: guys have to say from across the country. Sure, we've
- 15:49Speaker 1: got Greg Farrell and Mississippi this uh this week. He's
- 15:52Speaker 1: uh talking about some rut action that's been happening there.
- 15:55Speaker 1: You know what one thing about it is the South
- 15:57Speaker 1: still has ruts to come subtly. It's something to to
- 16:00Speaker 1: think about as you go forward, for sure. Uh. We
- 16:02Speaker 1: also have let me Lindsay Thomas Jr. And Georgia, Um,
- 16:07Speaker 1: Josh Elderton in West Virginia, and our very old Hayden
- 16:11Speaker 1: Sammy from Maryland. He's been having some good, some good
- 16:14Speaker 1: hunts since some big deer in that state. Man. Yeah,
- 16:16Speaker 1: by the blow it up. Everybody should go there. I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think that's right, man. For sure, you all should go
- 16:21Speaker 1: to Maryland hunt next year. Call they called the Iowa
- 16:24Speaker 1: of the East. They yeah, is that a thing? Yeah?
- 16:27Speaker 1: How about that? That's really a thing though you're not
- 16:29Speaker 1: just playing, not just kid, how about that? How should
- 16:32Speaker 1: go to there? Man? We really are. There are like
- 16:35Speaker 1: twenty guys from Maryland right now who hate us for
- 16:38Speaker 1: saying that. A we with the ribby in the sky
- 16:47Speaker 1: speaking of gnomers, you are, how about that? That's cool? Yeah,
- 16:51Speaker 1: they we'll get one of those. We're kind of that
- 16:53Speaker 1: country hurt did you heard some earlier. Ye, yeah, some
- 16:56Speaker 1: clucking turkeys. A right, Let's check out these Southern reb boys.
- 17:01Speaker 1: See what they have to say on the phone. Now,
- 17:04Speaker 1: I've got Hayden Sammick of Meat Eater. He has been
- 17:08Speaker 1: hunting in Maryland, of all places. What's up, dude? Hey man,
- 17:12Speaker 1: how's it going and how are you guys? Oh we're good,
- 17:14Speaker 1: just on the road to another hunt. Man, it sounds
- 17:16Speaker 1: like you're doing the same. Uh. Are you from that
- 17:19Speaker 1: area of the country originally? No, No, we're my girlfriend
- 17:23Speaker 1: and I are down hunting her her farm here, like
- 17:27Speaker 1: they had, like a family farm that doesn't get a
- 17:30Speaker 1: hit a bunch. So I'm out visiting her while I'm
- 17:32Speaker 1: on the East Coast. My folks are up from Pennsylvania,
- 17:36Speaker 1: so yeah close, yeah, close to us. That like the
- 17:39Speaker 1: East Coast is all the same place, so you know,
- 17:41Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, yeah, that's so. Did you in fact
- 17:44Speaker 1: choose your girlfriend according to how much unpressured hunting land
- 17:48Speaker 1: her family had, you know? In my In my dating
- 17:53Speaker 1: profile on the internet, it says permissions only. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 1: so you don't have to be you don't have to
- 17:59Speaker 1: be only dot com. Yeah. I thought my girlfriend's farmer's
- 18:07Speaker 1: only that's it. That's hilarious. So you've been having some
- 18:11Speaker 1: pretty good hunting up there, huh. You know what, he's
- 18:13Speaker 1: been surprisingly good man, Like, uh, you know, there's one
- 18:17Speaker 1: of those spots where I really wanted to come into
- 18:20Speaker 1: during our tree, but I'm so busy hunting now west
- 18:22Speaker 1: during the season. And also it's just like inconvenient living
- 18:25Speaker 1: out you know, in Montana. But she was trying to
- 18:29Speaker 1: get me to hunt the muzzleoader season out here, and
- 18:31Speaker 1: I told her I wasn't super sure about. And then
- 18:34Speaker 1: her uncle sent me a couple of trail camp pigs
- 18:36Speaker 1: and I got real sure, real quick. But but I'll
- 18:41Speaker 1: tell you what, I was surprised, and I'm surprised at
- 18:44Speaker 1: what I've been seeing lately. Yeah, So what's the what's
- 18:48Speaker 1: the dear movement? Like, what are you doing there right now?
- 18:51Speaker 1: So the way that this farm is like spread out,
- 18:56Speaker 1: there's a central road that goes through it, and you
- 18:58Speaker 1: can see into like the bad gadgetes of a bunch
- 19:00Speaker 1: of fuelds. Man, We're just like going down and they're
- 19:03Speaker 1: just gear moving everywhere. You know. The first night we
- 19:06Speaker 1: got here, I saw, you know, a pretty decent buck,
- 19:10Speaker 1: and I couldn't tell if he was just like playing
- 19:12Speaker 1: around with like a smaller buck, but he kind of
- 19:16Speaker 1: nudged him in the butt with his antler, and I
- 19:17Speaker 1: was like, that's like kind of funny. They're still being
- 19:20Speaker 1: like a little a little cheeky, little territorial maybe. And then, uh,
- 19:24Speaker 1: yesterday we're in a blind and we're watching these deer
- 19:28Speaker 1: and it was funny, man. They filtered out by size.
- 19:31Speaker 1: First it was like a button buck, then a spike,
- 19:33Speaker 1: than a fork and horrn, then a little six and
- 19:36Speaker 1: next thing, you know, over this rise, you know, all
- 19:38Speaker 1: the times are coming out. You know, it's a definite,
- 19:42Speaker 1: definite shoot deer. And following him was this little like
- 19:47Speaker 1: you know, yearling dough maybe like six months. You must
- 19:50Speaker 1: have just come into heat because he saw her and
- 19:54Speaker 1: chased off the other three bucks and just made a
- 19:58Speaker 1: beeline after I mean, like dose down, full wingspring after it,
- 20:03Speaker 1: and we never saw him again. We had a shot
- 20:05Speaker 1: for maybe half a second. You know, with with a muzzleloader,
- 20:08Speaker 1: it's really hard to take a snapshot like that, and
- 20:10Speaker 1: you wouldn't want to. Yeah, yeah, legit, legit chasing activity.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it. It's the second rut that everybody
- 20:18Speaker 1: talks about, Man, the second run. Yeah, so like a normal,
- 20:21Speaker 1: normal rut, there is a normal time for the rest
- 20:24Speaker 1: of the country kind of early November, right, Yeah, yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 1: yeah that unless look I'm missing something. That's how I interpreted, gotcha.
- 20:31Speaker 1: So I mean, how do you how do you Is
- 20:34Speaker 1: there a way to even like, are you taking that
- 20:37Speaker 1: information and going, Okay, I'm gonna stay in the area
- 20:40Speaker 1: because there's some kind of extras thing happening right now,
- 20:42Speaker 1: or is there a way to like pair that with
- 20:44Speaker 1: like overall dough traffic in certain areas and just assume
- 20:48Speaker 1: that you can make that replicate other places. Man, It's
- 20:52Speaker 1: it's weird because like they're getting back on there like pattern,
- 20:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean, all the doughs are bunched up,
- 20:59Speaker 1: all the bucks even to be bunched up. But then
- 21:01Speaker 1: there are these are just little wild cards that goes through.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I don't think that you can plan for it, like,
- 21:06Speaker 1: you know, I would definitely be trying to just go
- 21:08Speaker 1: where they were like the biggest deer concentrations. I wouldn't
- 21:11Speaker 1: necessarily be looking through like travel corridors. And the other
- 21:14Speaker 1: thing too, is like it's so unpressured that you know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: you can almost just hunt the edges of the fields,
- 21:22Speaker 1: you know what I mean, as long as you get
- 21:24Speaker 1: into like the right corner of that field. It's not
- 21:27Speaker 1: like you're in a bunch of public where they're only
- 21:28Speaker 1: going to come out in the fields and dark. So
- 21:30Speaker 1: it's it's kind of cool. Man. Very rarely do you
- 21:32Speaker 1: get to or very rarely do I get to go
- 21:36Speaker 1: see a white tailed population that's just not been hunted
- 21:38Speaker 1: to hell. You know, that's cool, sounds like fun. Man.
- 21:41Speaker 1: It's always good to be in place where there's a
- 21:42Speaker 1: lot of deers. So, I know, seasons kind of winding
- 21:46Speaker 1: down kind of across the country, right, so as we
- 21:48Speaker 1: look forward to kind of some of these last weeks
- 21:50Speaker 1: of the season here, Uh, if you had to predict
- 21:53Speaker 1: what you think buck movement will be like for the
- 21:55Speaker 1: next week, what would you say it would be on
- 21:57Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten. All right, now, it's
- 22:01Speaker 1: kind of warm, It should be getting a little bit
- 22:03Speaker 1: colder where I'm at. Um, you know you're gonna see
- 22:09Speaker 1: like that wild card, but otherwise I think it's gonna
- 22:11Speaker 1: be pretty average. I would give it like like a
- 22:14Speaker 1: six six seven maybe, Um, you know again, it's a
- 22:19Speaker 1: right around that time where you get that second cycle
- 22:21Speaker 1: or some of those younger fonts are coming in for
- 22:24Speaker 1: the first time. So you know, yeah six seven if
- 22:29Speaker 1: you get a wild card and you get some late
- 22:31Speaker 1: rutting activity, but you know, it's it's kind of the
- 22:33Speaker 1: closer cool man. Well, I hope you have some great
- 22:36Speaker 1: success out there, man, and uh, thanks for the report.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you bet, thanks for having me. All right. Now,
- 22:44Speaker 1: I've got Josh Ilderton. He's up in West Virginia. He
- 22:47Speaker 1: has been spending some time hunting mountain bucks up there
- 22:49Speaker 1: and doing some cool stuff video and and all that. Josh,
- 22:53Speaker 1: what's the word from your neck of the woods man?
- 22:56Speaker 1: My word when Nick Woods and West Virginia is it
- 23:00Speaker 1: was a really good movement this past Thursday and Friday. Uh,
- 23:06Speaker 1: this kind of secondary like those coming in and if
- 23:12Speaker 1: you were near them and then you were getting some movement.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The last two weeks have been deader than I'll get out,
- 23:19Speaker 1: but it seems to be picking up and right now
- 23:21Speaker 1: with this second rut and these late the late does
- 23:24Speaker 1: start to come in to heat. Yeah, yeah, that's good.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So you you are seeing a little bit of second
- 23:29Speaker 1: rut happening. Then, yeah, we did did on the Thursday
- 23:33Speaker 1: and Friday saw a lot of that, actually saw some breathing. Um,
- 23:37Speaker 1: how about that? And then it kind of slowed down
- 23:43Speaker 1: and had some we had midday movement yesterday and then
- 23:47Speaker 1: nothing in the morning and hardly nothing in the evening
- 23:50Speaker 1: and then uh, of course I ain't gonna report back
- 23:53Speaker 1: from Zack yet today, but he's seeing some deer early
- 23:56Speaker 1: this morning, but really no chasing or or rut movement.
- 24:00Speaker 1: So you have any assumptions about that midday movement. Is
- 24:03Speaker 1: that a moon based thing or what do you think? Yeah,
- 24:07Speaker 1: that's what I think it is. U. I think this
- 24:10Speaker 1: red action is hit or hit or miss, and it
- 24:13Speaker 1: will be for the next four or five days. Uh
- 24:19Speaker 1: for these lake those and the and the you know,
- 24:22Speaker 1: the the late yearlings if they get bred this year. Uh,
- 24:27Speaker 1: I think it's the secondary rust is gonna be hit
- 24:30Speaker 1: or miss and then hopefully this deers start going into
- 24:33Speaker 1: a feeding frenzy within the last two weeks of season. Yeah,
- 24:37Speaker 1: is there any pattern to finding those yearlins that might
- 24:41Speaker 1: come into heat late? Like could you ever do anything
- 24:43Speaker 1: like that where you're like, oh, that do family group's
- 24:45Speaker 1: got like three year lands in it. So I'm gonna
- 24:46Speaker 1: hunt over in that area. I know where they're at,
- 24:48Speaker 1: and hopefully one of those will be one of those
- 24:50Speaker 1: late estrus does. Yeah, we do it sometimes, but it
- 24:56Speaker 1: is so big and in the mountains are it's so
- 24:59Speaker 1: vas that there's no it's hard to pattern deer here
- 25:03Speaker 1: in southern West Virginia because they because they can. They
- 25:07Speaker 1: could be over here today and over there for three days.
- 25:14Speaker 1: And it's just really hard to pattern deer unless you're feeding.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Yeah you can, you can put a pattern on them
- 25:22Speaker 1: if you're feeding, but it's really hard to pattern them.
- 25:26Speaker 1: So are y'all are y'all hunting? Uh? Just high traffic
- 25:29Speaker 1: areas right now? Or what what in particular are you
- 25:31Speaker 1: looking at? Well, we run, we run a lot of
- 25:34Speaker 1: game cameras, and when we see action on game cameras,
- 25:38Speaker 1: we go into that area. Gotchata, I know what. We
- 25:43Speaker 1: miss a lot of stuff that way. But it uh,
- 25:46Speaker 1: we especially this late season where the i mean nick
- 25:50Speaker 1: bucks are run down. You know, they look like damn
- 25:53Speaker 1: it to hell, and it's just uh, they're having to
- 25:56Speaker 1: start re energizing and eating, and so we we've got
- 26:00Speaker 1: a lot of cameras on food sources and stuff and
- 26:02Speaker 1: hopefully well so in that vast country, I'm assuming you
- 26:06Speaker 1: don't have a ton of agricultural food sources. What are
- 26:09Speaker 1: those deer eating right now? Right now, they're browsing, you know,
- 26:14Speaker 1: and they're eating they're eating red oaks. Uh they're still
- 26:18Speaker 1: on the ground, but you know, all the white oaks
- 26:21Speaker 1: and uh, they're all gone and what's left on the
- 26:26Speaker 1: ground rotting. So they're eating what. You know, if there
- 26:28Speaker 1: are red oaks on the ground, they're eating them. But heck,
- 26:32Speaker 1: there ain't a whole lot of them, so they're mainly
- 26:34Speaker 1: just browsing. So you're looking for clear cuts and stuff
- 26:37Speaker 1: like that. Well we had, we had old coal mining jobs.
- 26:43Speaker 1: So it's it's a bunch of reclaiming, like automolives and
- 26:49Speaker 1: like crpas, a lot of a lot of a lot
- 26:52Speaker 1: of salt briars and uh, just dick like crpas stuff. Yeah,
- 26:59Speaker 1: So are you gonna stay with that in the next week?
- 27:01Speaker 1: That kind of pattern is hunting those areas looking for
- 27:04Speaker 1: deer they're coming back to to feed heavy. Yeah, and
- 27:07Speaker 1: then and then the the grasses, you know, there's a
- 27:11Speaker 1: lot it's it's it's it's pretty good open country. Where
- 27:14Speaker 1: we hunt, So we'll go back to UH at some
- 27:18Speaker 1: point that we keep on telling ourselves to this, and
- 27:20Speaker 1: we keep on grinding. But at some point these deer's
- 27:23Speaker 1: got to get back into grass and start feeding, and
- 27:26Speaker 1: the you know, the shooter bucks will show up to
- 27:28Speaker 1: give us a chance to spot stop. So UH, Zach
- 27:33Speaker 1: will keep on having and then I will probably glass
- 27:39Speaker 1: and try to find bucks. That way, got you cool? Man? Well,
- 27:43Speaker 1: it sounds like a got good playing going forward. Um.
- 27:45Speaker 1: If you're looking at the next week, all things considered,
- 27:49Speaker 1: moon weather, um, and just time of year. Um, if
- 27:54Speaker 1: you had to put a number on it, one to ten,
- 27:56Speaker 1: what would your rate the buck buck movement as being
- 28:01Speaker 1: Can I put it? Can I put two two numbers
- 28:03Speaker 1: on it? Well? Yeah, I think we could do that.
- 28:05Speaker 1: That's a good question. All right, So I'll get I'll
- 28:08Speaker 1: put a three on today through Wednesday, and then I'll
- 28:14Speaker 1: put a eight and a half Wednesday through the week. Right, man,
- 28:19Speaker 1: that's high. I like that. Give me good confidence. Wants
- 28:22Speaker 1: to be changed there? Uh, just kind of going by
- 28:27Speaker 1: my moon charts in the movement we've been seeing UH
- 28:32Speaker 1: and the weather that's hit down here. I think it's
- 28:35Speaker 1: slow here. The next couple of days. All right, yeah,
- 28:41Speaker 1: cool man. We are looking for a mooner to get
- 28:43Speaker 1: on here, and then you're just the guy, so we
- 28:45Speaker 1: appreciate that solid information. Sir. Let me let me tell
- 28:50Speaker 1: you I killed my buck turn the redmon, so they're
- 28:54Speaker 1: not activity if you want it, they wi just the
- 28:59Speaker 1: moon and wind. Yeah, yeah, yeah, well awesome man. We'll
- 29:04Speaker 1: appreciate the information. And uh, I hope that you have
- 29:08Speaker 1: good success here at the end of the month. Man. Yeah, man,
- 29:11Speaker 1: y'all have a great trip too. All right, we have
- 29:28Speaker 1: got Lindsay Thomas Jr. Of the National Deer Association on
- 29:31Speaker 1: the line. This dude's been hunting down the southeast Georgia. Lindsay,
- 29:34Speaker 1: what's happening? Man? Oh, it is not a lot. How
- 29:37Speaker 1: about you, guys? You're doing alright, We're doing good. We're
- 29:39Speaker 1: kind of excited. We're we're in Texas hunting right now
- 29:42Speaker 1: and got some cool weather. And I bet you that
- 29:44Speaker 1: that cool weather's headed y'all's direction, isn't it it is?
- 29:48Speaker 1: We're looking for some deep cold for Georgia coming up soon. Yeah?
- 29:52Speaker 1: How about that? So you've been hunting some recently, has
- 29:54Speaker 1: it been warmer and has that affected deer. It was
- 29:59Speaker 1: pretty warm throughout most of the early season for us. UM.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And this is I'm in southeast Georgia on on the
- 30:06Speaker 1: near the coast. We have a pretty early rut there. Um,
- 30:09Speaker 1: it's late October early November, so Halloween is kind of
- 30:12Speaker 1: right around you know, peak rutt for us. And it
- 30:15Speaker 1: definitely was you know, warm earlier in the year. And
- 30:17Speaker 1: we're getting some cold weather now. But you know, they're
- 30:20Speaker 1: gonna rut regardless of what the temperature is around the
- 30:24Speaker 1: same time every year. So our rutt was when it
- 30:26Speaker 1: was supposed to be. Um. But yeah, it's this colder weather.
- 30:31Speaker 1: It's obviously nice to get in the woods when it's colder. Yeah.
- 30:34Speaker 1: So you're down there in that pine country. I know, y'all.
- 30:36Speaker 1: Y'all do pine straw on that kind of stuff, which
- 30:38Speaker 1: is really cool. Not traditionally known as like uh great
- 30:42Speaker 1: deer forage, though you know, they don't really like the
- 30:44Speaker 1: pineheels too much. I don't imagine. So, Um, what is
- 30:47Speaker 1: kind of the the key to to finding deer in
- 30:50Speaker 1: that kind of country? Are you looking for uh, thick
- 30:53Speaker 1: pockets of bedding or kind of how do you hunt
- 30:55Speaker 1: outside those rut windows? Well, it's uh, it's the flats
- 31:00Speaker 1: for sure, and then a lot of timber activity, so
- 31:02Speaker 1: a lot of cover in all directions. So yeah, it's
- 31:05Speaker 1: tough to sort of discern what a bedding area is
- 31:07Speaker 1: for for deer in South Georgia or any of the
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know sort of uh fabled movement patterns of bed
- 31:15Speaker 1: to feed. You know, it's that's tough to find. So
- 31:18Speaker 1: you know, it's it's natural foods, it's acres, it is
- 31:22Speaker 1: uh soft masked um. And then food plots if you've
- 31:26Speaker 1: got them, but um, usually um, what happens is here
- 31:31Speaker 1: a lot of the food plots get hunted early, um
- 31:34Speaker 1: and get pressured out and then so you're not seeing
- 31:36Speaker 1: as many deer and and that's that's what we've seen
- 31:38Speaker 1: here this year. Um. But now if you've got food
- 31:43Speaker 1: plots that haven't been pressured late in the season like
- 31:46Speaker 1: this right now, that can be really good or at
- 31:48Speaker 1: least some plots maybe you hadn't hunted in a few
- 31:50Speaker 1: weeks and you can sneak back in there. Um. So
- 31:53Speaker 1: food is always a big part of it for us. UM.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And you know, getting in some swamps and areas where
- 31:59Speaker 1: you can see a good ways when the when the
- 32:01Speaker 1: peak movement is on back, you know, like I said
- 32:03Speaker 1: in late October. Yeah, so you know, for those guys
- 32:06Speaker 1: that might not have the food plots and talk about
- 32:09Speaker 1: a little bit about like native forage maybe you know,
- 32:12Speaker 1: for us, like here in in East Texas this time
- 32:15Speaker 1: of year, we still have green you know, in areas
- 32:18Speaker 1: pretty much year round. Same for y'all. Imagine, uh, you know,
- 32:21Speaker 1: for us, like you see deer starting hit uh and
- 32:23Speaker 1: I know it's a non native, but privet we see
- 32:25Speaker 1: honeysuckle being browsed pretty heavy. To are there are there
- 32:28Speaker 1: things like that that people could key in on if
- 32:30Speaker 1: they don't have food plots. There are some, um, but
- 32:34Speaker 1: mostly this time of year, what what I see is
- 32:37Speaker 1: acrons that are remaining in the red oak family. Usually
- 32:40Speaker 1: for us it's it's water oaks, um. And we do
- 32:43Speaker 1: have some live oaks that are holding late this year.
- 32:46Speaker 1: Uh So, finding any acres you can that are still
- 32:49Speaker 1: around and as as some people know the red oak family,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know, they tend to last longer on the ground
- 32:56Speaker 1: and they're viable, you know, on for weeks after they've
- 32:59Speaker 1: fallen from a tree, unlike acrons in the white oak family,
- 33:02Speaker 1: which get gone fast, but also don't last as long
- 33:05Speaker 1: they go ahead and Germany. So anyhow, if you if
- 33:08Speaker 1: you've you know, you might have had um some red oaks,
- 33:11Speaker 1: water oaks, any any oak in the red oak family
- 33:13Speaker 1: that was dropping earlier this year, but the deer didn't
- 33:16Speaker 1: seem to be attracted to it. You need to go
- 33:17Speaker 1: back and check those again because now as forage gets scarce,
- 33:21Speaker 1: now that we're getting some some good cold, you know,
- 33:25Speaker 1: deer will circle back and look for those and you'll
- 33:27Speaker 1: find activity under those trees even though the acorns have
- 33:30Speaker 1: been sitting there for weeks. So you mentioned the cold.
- 33:34Speaker 1: They're much of the South and really the whole country
- 33:37Speaker 1: is going to experience cold, but particularly in the South
- 33:38Speaker 1: that's pretty timely because we're still hunting deer. Um. How
- 33:42Speaker 1: do you feel like that's going to affect deer movement,
- 33:44Speaker 1: that that really sharp cold spell. Uh, the science shows
- 33:49Speaker 1: it doesn't really affect deer movement. Deer got to eat
- 33:51Speaker 1: every day of the year, regardless of what the temperature is. Um,
- 33:56Speaker 1: So you know, find where the food is and and
- 33:59Speaker 1: that's where you need to be. And this time of year,
- 34:02Speaker 1: you know, I think I told you all, I'm already
- 34:04Speaker 1: seeing bucks getting back together in bachelor groups on my
- 34:07Speaker 1: cameras because we're so far out from the rut at
- 34:10Speaker 1: this point. Um, you know, it's been a month and
- 34:13Speaker 1: a half basically since the peak, and so you know,
- 34:18Speaker 1: bucks are they're trying to wherever you hunt after the rut,
- 34:21Speaker 1: bucks are gonna be trying to catch up physically because
- 34:24Speaker 1: they've been exerting themselves chasing dose been a lot of
- 34:27Speaker 1: time without eating. They need to get caught up, and
- 34:30Speaker 1: so they're gonna be, you know, on food. Um. And
- 34:34Speaker 1: it's regardless of the weather. You know, we see that
- 34:36Speaker 1: even if in where we continue to have mild weather
- 34:40Speaker 1: right on up to Christmas and beyond, I mean, they
- 34:42Speaker 1: still got to eat every day. Um. So again it's
- 34:47Speaker 1: now the food. The weather may affect food sources if
- 34:50Speaker 1: it hasn't been cold yet and it hasn't killed off
- 34:53Speaker 1: a lot of the natural forage uh and green forage,
- 34:56Speaker 1: and then that's you know, they may still be on that.
- 34:59Speaker 1: But if we get a a deep cold snap and
- 35:01Speaker 1: it does sort of convert over uh to uh the
- 35:04Speaker 1: deer to winter brows versus you know, green forwards, then
- 35:09Speaker 1: you're gonna see them hunting acorns and and hitting food
- 35:12Speaker 1: plots and other things that are available, particularly if you've
- 35:15Speaker 1: got like a Braska food plot that's still around, still productive,
- 35:18Speaker 1: Um that you know that they will really be key
- 35:21Speaker 1: on those. Yeah. Yeah, man, that's good info right there.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I appreciate that, dude. So if you had to look
- 35:25Speaker 1: forward to the next week and give buck movement a
- 35:28Speaker 1: rating from one to ten, what would you call it,
- 35:32Speaker 1: I'm gonna say, you know, five to six. It's it's
- 35:35Speaker 1: pretty good movement. It's not rut movement. It's just um,
- 35:39Speaker 1: you know, bucks are like I said, I'm seeing them
- 35:41Speaker 1: coming back to food plots and out there even together
- 35:44Speaker 1: in groups, you know, chowing down. Um, they're hungry and uh,
- 35:49Speaker 1: they got to get caught up. So that's that's what
- 35:51Speaker 1: they're doing. Now. You may not see them in the daylight,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and I'm not seeing daylight moving on my cameras because
- 35:57Speaker 1: all my cameras are on food plots and all those
- 36:00Speaker 1: camera which I moved him there in in uh you know,
- 36:02Speaker 1: over Thanksgiving holiday, I moved my cameras from rut related
- 36:06Speaker 1: locations like scrapes to food plots. And all those food
- 36:10Speaker 1: plots had been hunted throughout the season. So all the
- 36:13Speaker 1: activity I'm seeing on those plots right now is a
- 36:15Speaker 1: night and that makes sense. That's from the pressure. It's
- 36:18Speaker 1: not because deer went nocturnal. That's you know, my cameras
- 36:21Speaker 1: are in places where deer have been pressured all season,
- 36:23Speaker 1: and so they're only coming in there in the dark. Uh,
- 36:26Speaker 1: they're still moving in daylight. Uh. You just gotta find
- 36:29Speaker 1: where that is. Yeah, awesome, man, appreciate the information, Lindsay,
- 36:32Speaker 1: and I hope that you have a very merry Christmas, sir,
- 36:36Speaker 1: saying to you guys and good luck in South Texas.
- 36:40Speaker 1: All right, we're talking to Greg Farrell. He's with First Slide.
- 36:43Speaker 1: There's a lot of cool things they're designing, awesome gear
- 36:47Speaker 1: and uh he's been in Mississippi recently hanging out with
- 36:50Speaker 1: old Levi, And Um, I mean, how did you How
- 36:55Speaker 1: did Levi get get it done the first night? And
- 36:57Speaker 1: you didn't, Man, I don't understand that, you know, I
- 37:00Speaker 1: asked myself the same thing. But I guess if you uh,
- 37:03Speaker 1: if you're gonna lose to somebody, maybe losing to the
- 37:05Speaker 1: greatest guy to ever do it, I guess it's littally
- 37:07Speaker 1: easier to sleep at night. Yeah, you'd hate to lose
- 37:11Speaker 1: like me, r K, that's really the bottom of the
- 37:13Speaker 1: barrel at that point. Man. So uh was it the
- 37:18Speaker 1: rut down there? Yeah? So I was down there. Um,
- 37:22Speaker 1: last week s would have been you know hunting dates
- 37:24Speaker 1: like the eleventh to the sixteenth of December, and man,
- 37:27Speaker 1: that was like it was right on the tail and
- 37:31Speaker 1: um of their rut, which is pretty cool in terms
- 37:33Speaker 1: of being able to extend, you know, like a true
- 37:35Speaker 1: rut hunt into the month of December versus you know
- 37:38Speaker 1: what I'm used to kind of you know, being in
- 37:40Speaker 1: the Midwest as much as possible. It's kind of that
- 37:43Speaker 1: November times, right, So it's pretty awesome. So, uh, were
- 37:46Speaker 1: you using like typical kind of I guess shoulder rut tactics?
- 37:50Speaker 1: Were you doing some calling and stuff like that. Yeah.
- 37:54Speaker 1: So the place we were on m you know, pretty
- 37:57Speaker 1: heavily managed in terms of age class of beer. So
- 37:59Speaker 1: the buck to dote ratio is is really good. Um,
- 38:02Speaker 1: there's a lot of you know that older age class year,
- 38:05Speaker 1: a lot of deer make it you know three four
- 38:07Speaker 1: plus there. So Um, because of that, I would say
- 38:11Speaker 1: we were using you know, some of those shoulder tactics,
- 38:13Speaker 1: like they were still they still respond to calls. The
- 38:17Speaker 1: bucks are pretty aggressive there because you know, there is
- 38:20Speaker 1: a pretty good number of bucks per dough on that place. Um,
- 38:24Speaker 1: I would say, however, I think we caught like the
- 38:27Speaker 1: very tail end of it. So really what we were
- 38:29Speaker 1: seeing is like the first day, first day and a half,
- 38:32Speaker 1: there's still some good chasing and and seeking going on. Um,
- 38:37Speaker 1: those bucks were moving around trying to you know, established
- 38:40Speaker 1: and maintain their territory and trying to pick up a
- 38:43Speaker 1: late hot dough. But really the rest of the week
- 38:47Speaker 1: it was tough. It got a little warm, um and
- 38:49Speaker 1: the bigger mature deer were definitely locked down. We saw
- 38:53Speaker 1: a ton of bucks with those pinned down and they
- 38:56Speaker 1: just weren't moving. So that made it a little tough
- 38:59Speaker 1: be at the tail end of that rut. You know,
- 39:01Speaker 1: some of the younger ones were still cruising around, um,
- 39:04Speaker 1: not really knowing what they're doing, trying to pick up
- 39:06Speaker 1: a dough, but those bigger bucks were definitely locked down hard. So, um,
- 39:11Speaker 1: was were you hunting near food or near bedding or
- 39:14Speaker 1: kind of you try different things there? What was the
- 39:17Speaker 1: what were having the most success? Yeah, so you know,
- 39:20Speaker 1: kind of right away at the beginning of the week,
- 39:22Speaker 1: just based off of what you know, a few other
- 39:24Speaker 1: guys were that were there saw leading up to that,
- 39:28Speaker 1: we're in those transition areas hard because those bucks were
- 39:31Speaker 1: still cruising and moving. Um. And then as we kind
- 39:34Speaker 1: of you know, saw the more mature deers start to
- 39:38Speaker 1: lock down and pindos down, we moved in tight to betting.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I mean, our our plan basically the rest of the
- 39:44Speaker 1: week was get as close to dough betting as we
- 39:46Speaker 1: possibly could, as close to the thick stuff as we
- 39:48Speaker 1: possibly could, um, because really, you know, the way they
- 39:51Speaker 1: were acting and moving, your best bet was you almost
- 39:55Speaker 1: had to get set up within a hundred yards of
- 39:57Speaker 1: them because they weren't moving much more than that. So
- 40:01Speaker 1: kind of looking forward here, the south is about to
- 40:03Speaker 1: experience a pretty good cold front, um. But I know
- 40:06Speaker 1: it's kind of tailing off on the rut there. So
- 40:07Speaker 1: do you think that the weather has much effect on
- 40:11Speaker 1: that rut movement? Do you think it would still be
- 40:13Speaker 1: rocking and rolling down there if it's gonna be cold? Yeah,
- 40:16Speaker 1: I mean, based off of of what I saw, and
- 40:20Speaker 1: you know, mind you this is we were in Mississippi,
- 40:23Speaker 1: you know, basically just south of the Tennessee border, Um,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I think what you're gonna see in this next week
- 40:29Speaker 1: is you're gonna see a lot of deer move back
- 40:32Speaker 1: to kind of post rout feeding patterns. I think you're
- 40:35Speaker 1: gonna have the straggler, you know, dough or two that's
- 40:38Speaker 1: still hot and still getting pursued. But I think that
- 40:41Speaker 1: cold front is gonna help the movement on all fronts
- 40:44Speaker 1: right in both of those scenarios. So, man, if I
- 40:47Speaker 1: had another week to be there, what I would be
- 40:49Speaker 1: doing is I'd be getting close to food because that's
- 40:52Speaker 1: where the does are going to be. I think, you know,
- 40:53Speaker 1: those bucks haven't really eight or laid down much of
- 40:56Speaker 1: the last three weeks, so they're gonna start hitting food
- 40:58Speaker 1: again and think we um if they are still looking
- 41:02Speaker 1: for that you know, that last hot door or two,
- 41:04Speaker 1: I think those bucks are gonna start to really congregate
- 41:06Speaker 1: around the areas does are spending time. Yeah. Yeah, man,
- 41:09Speaker 1: good stuff there. Um, If you had to guess and
- 41:13Speaker 1: or take or take a shot at ranking buck movement
- 41:16Speaker 1: from a scale of one to ten in the next
- 41:18Speaker 1: week with cold TIMPs coming in based off of what
- 41:21Speaker 1: you saw last week to what would you rate that
- 41:25Speaker 1: as being Man, I think it's gonna be good. Um,
- 41:28Speaker 1: you know, we had or they had obviously they were
- 41:32Speaker 1: on a ton of trail cams and I had the
- 41:33Speaker 1: opportunity to see actually a few of the bucks that
- 41:36Speaker 1: were taken last week, um, you know, photos from weeks before,
- 41:40Speaker 1: and I would say it was pretty obvious a lot
- 41:42Speaker 1: of those deer had lost you know, thirty to forty
- 41:44Speaker 1: pounds over the course the last three weeks, just running hard.
- 41:47Speaker 1: So I think with that being said, um, you know,
- 41:50Speaker 1: the stage of the Rutte's in that cold front, all
- 41:54Speaker 1: those things are gonna lead to bucks are gonna be
- 41:56Speaker 1: one to eat, and they're gonna want to eat a lot.
- 41:58Speaker 1: So I think you're gonna see a lot of daylight
- 42:00Speaker 1: movement around food sources. Um, but I think you'd be
- 42:03Speaker 1: you know, pretty good. I'd probably have to say, you know,
- 42:06Speaker 1: somewhere in that maybe seven to eight range would be
- 42:09Speaker 1: my guests in terms of what they're going to be doing. Man,
- 42:12Speaker 1: that's pretty good. That'll uh, that'll fire some Mississippi hunters.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Let's go. Man, if I could, i'd be back there
- 42:20Speaker 1: right now and sort of sitting back at the computer.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I'll tell you that. Well, it's uh, it's weird how
- 42:26Speaker 1: we have to work to pay for this thing that
- 42:27Speaker 1: we love doing. Man. But um, I understand it, and
- 42:31Speaker 1: I appreciate your advice here man, and the thoughts on Mississippi,
- 42:35Speaker 1: and um, I hope you have a merry Christmas. Man. Yeah,
- 42:38Speaker 1: you guys as well. I know you guys are still
- 42:40Speaker 1: out there grinding, so good luck with the rest of
