Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / 'Make sure people have the facts’ OH Dem House candidate on his new attack ad against his opponent
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: With just 37 days to go until the midterms, Republicans
- 0:03Speaker 1: are facing an uphill battle to hold on to their
- 0:05Speaker 1: majority in the House. Cook Political Report now projects that
- 0:08Speaker 1: Democrats are more likely to gain between 5 and 15 seats,
- 0:13Speaker 1: enough to flip the chamber and give them a 220
- 0:14Speaker 1: to 230 seat majority next year. One closely watched race
- 0:16Speaker 1: is in Ohio's 7th district. Democrat Brian Poindexter is facing
- 0:24Speaker 1: off against Republican incumbent Congressman Max Miller. And now a
- 0:28Speaker 1: new ad by Poindexter's campaign is bringing even more attention
- 0:32Speaker 1: to the race, centering its message on the domestic abuse
- 0:35Speaker 1: allegations against Miller that have embroiled his campaign. Miller has
- 0:40Speaker 1: repeatedly denied the allegations and threatened to sue Ohio stations
- 0:44Speaker 1: if they ran the ad, which his attorney called defamatory.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Joining us now, Brian Poindexter, Democratic nominee for Ohio's 7th
- 0:52Speaker 1: Congressional District. Brian, welcome back to the show. What has
- 0:56Speaker 1: prompted you to run this ad and overall change your
- 1:00Speaker 1: tone a bit on being more aggressive and attacking Congressman
- 1:05Speaker 1: Max Miller for things that reporters here in Washington have
- 1:10Speaker 1: been reporting on for a few months now?
- 1:13Speaker 2: Well, first off, good morning. Happy to be here with
- 1:15Speaker 2: you on this beautiful fall day here in.
- 1:17Speaker 3: The 7th District. Yeah, we haven't changed our tone one bit.
- 1:20Speaker 2: We are still laser focused on putting workers first in
- 1:23Speaker 2: this race. I get asked two questions at the doors. One,
- 1:29Speaker 2: what am I going to do for the cost of
- 1:30Speaker 2: living and how to help in that way? But also,
- 1:34Speaker 2: tell me about your opponent. So we want to make
- 1:36Speaker 2: sure people have the facts. So we're telling the story
- 1:40Speaker 2: of my opponent to make sure people are well informed
- 1:43Speaker 2: when they go into that voting booth on November 3rd. Mr.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Poindexter, you said that when you knock on doors, they
- 1:50Speaker 4: talk to you about two things, one of them being
- 1:51Speaker 4: cost of living. What other things are they talking about?
- 1:55Speaker 4: I'm wondering, are they talking about the war with Iran?
- 1:59Speaker 4: Are they talking about the vanity projects the president seems
- 2:01Speaker 4: to be more focused on here in Washington?
- 2:04Speaker 3: Other issues?
- 2:06Speaker 2: Well, the cost of living consumes a lot of different things.
- 2:09Speaker 2: The war in Iran, definitely top of mind. The blanket
- 2:12Speaker 2: tariffs that have driven up costs for our farmers. You know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: the corruption in Washington. And, you know, my opponent has
- 2:21Speaker 2: supported every single one of those initiatives.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And that's what people are seeing. They're filling it in
- 2:25Speaker 3: their wallets.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And not only is he terrible in his personal life,
- 2:28Speaker 2: but he's also terrible in his public life, being erratic
- 2:32Speaker 2: at times, you know, fully supporting the missions of this president.
- 2:38Speaker 2: The war in Iran is really top of mind for folks, though,
- 2:40Speaker 2: because the cost of gas is hitting everything across the board.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I have Republicans reaching out to me daily. that it's
- 2:50Speaker 2: affecting them, too, and they didn't think it was going
- 2:52Speaker 2: to affect them.
- 2:53Speaker 3: The way it affected everybody else.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:56Speaker 5: Brian, you're a union iron worker, and you have been
- 3:00Speaker 5: since 2007. You're one of a very few group of
- 3:04Speaker 5: candidates that's endorsed by both Bernie Sanders and the Blue
- 3:07Speaker 5: Dog Democrats, so you run on a sort of populism— centrist
- 3:11Speaker 5: populism-ish— I wonder if you could talk about how that
- 3:16Speaker 5: is working for you on the trail. And it's a
- 3:18Speaker 5: very interesting district, your district. And you've got it's gone
- 3:21Speaker 5: from sort of a lean R to more, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 5: a lean L. So talk us through that.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Well, I'm not really into labels.
- 3:31Speaker 2: You know, I'm just a working person coming out of
- 3:34Speaker 2: the workforce, running to fight hard for the working.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Families in my district.
- 3:37Speaker 2: And that's the one thing that this very gerrymandered district
- 3:41Speaker 2: has in common all across the district is everybody works
- 3:44Speaker 2: hard for a living. And, you know, I'm one who's
- 3:47Speaker 2: going to keep the door open for dialogue. Keep the
- 3:50Speaker 2: door open for support. And we've been able to secure
- 3:53Speaker 2: support from the from the farthest reaches of the Democratic
- 3:56Speaker 2: Party all the way deep into the Republican Party because
- 3:59Speaker 2: of the message of bringing people back together, standing together
- 4:03Speaker 2: to fight for workers. And, you know, you can hear
- 4:05Speaker 2: more about that mission if you go to point extra
- 4:07Speaker 2: for Congress dot com and learn more about my background
- 4:10Speaker 2: and what I'm fighting for and jump on board.
- 4:13Speaker 3: The door is open for anybody who wants to help.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Brian, because you are trying to define your opponent for voters,
- 4:20Speaker 1: I'm wondering what you feel is the most offensive or
- 4:24Speaker 1: problematic thing about Congressman Max Miller that has surfaced recently.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Well, I mean, he has a whole host of things
- 4:31Speaker 3: to choose from.
- 4:31Speaker 2: I mean, you know, his personal life, you know, being
- 4:33Speaker 2: accused by three different women of domestic violence, both Republican
- 4:38Speaker 2: senators saying he's unfit for office. You know, the fact
- 4:42Speaker 2: that they hold their breath whenever his child is in custody.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And that's all on his personal side of things. But
- 4:48Speaker 2: in his professional side, I mean, he has more active
- 4:51Speaker 2: lawsuits right now than he has a piece of legislation
- 4:53Speaker 2: with his name on it. People are seeing that he's
- 4:56Speaker 2: willing to fight for himself, and he's not fighting for
- 4:59Speaker 2: the District 7 residents.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And, you know, people are waking up to it.
- 5:03Speaker 2: They want somebody who's going to go in there and
- 5:04Speaker 2: fight for them, and that's what I'm going to do.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'm going to work hard because I live the same
- 5:08Speaker 2: issues that the average person in the district lives through. And,
- 5:12Speaker 2: you know, I'm going to bring real change because I
- 5:15Speaker 2: bring the perspective of the average person from my district.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Real quickly, Brian, one, Congressman Miller has denied the accusations.
- 5:23Speaker 4: But real fast, if you are elected, what's the one
- 5:26Speaker 4: committee you would want to sit on?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Well, I think, I mean, I don't want to put
- 5:31Speaker 2: the cart before the horse. I got to win first.
- 5:33Speaker 2: That's what I'm most focused on. But I think right
- 5:35Speaker 2: off the bat, you know, labor and education I think
- 5:38Speaker 2: would be a good fit because I have a strong
- 5:39Speaker 2: labor background.
- 5:41Speaker 3: But I'm willing to serve wherever I'm needed.
- 5:44Speaker 2: You know, I'm willing to learn quickly and make sure
- 5:46Speaker 2: that I bring the perspective of the average worker from
- 5:50Speaker 2: my district to whatever committee I serve on.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Brian Poindexter, thank you.
