- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle talk. Today we are in Psalm 123, Psalm
- 0:20123, and this is a very little Psalm.
- 0:23It only has four verses, so we'll see if this is a
- 0:29particularly short Tabernacle talk episode or if there's some
- 0:34things here that might make me go on a little longer.
- 0:37There's only one way to find out.
- 0:39Psalm 123 is another one of the Song of a Sense.
- 0:43These are 15 songs that the children of Israel would sing
- 0:47every single year. 3 * a year as they went up to Jerusalem to the
- 0:52Temple for their annual festivals.
- 0:56There were three of those that they went to.
- 0:58And so this is one of those songs, Psalm 123 and verse one
- 1:03says this, I lift my eyes to you, the 1 enthroned in heaven,
- 1:08like a servant's eyes on his master's hand, like a servant
- 1:12girl's eyes on her mistress's hand.
- 1:15So our eyes are on the are on Yahweh, our God, until he shows
- 1:20us favor. Show us favor.
- 1:23Yahweh show us favor. For we've had more than enough
- 1:27contempt. We've had more than enough scorn
- 1:30from the arrogant and contempt from the proud here.
- 1:36This is such an interesting Psalm at as I think about this,
- 1:41verse 2 is kind of where the main focus is.
- 1:45And I can almost wonder if walking along the path when I am
- 1:50in the car with my 2 kiddos, they love playing I spy or you,
- 1:56you know, you do little games that get each one of them
- 1:59involved and that way they're not quite focusing on how long
- 2:03the journey is. They're not concerned about, you
- 2:08know, whatever else have you. So as, as they are on this
- 2:14journey up to Jerusalem, I almost wonder if, like in verse
- 2:192, if the boys might sing one part of this song and then the
- 2:24girls sing another part of this song.
- 2:27And this one seems like just a very, very short 1.
- 2:30And so maybe they sing it through a couple of times, or
- 2:33maybe everyone together did when at verse 2 where it says like a
- 2:38servant's eyes on his master's hand, like a servant girl's eyes
- 2:41on her mistress's hand. I just don't know if maybe
- 2:45during the one part everyone did like a deep voice, like a
- 2:49servant's eyes on his master's hand, and then the next part
- 2:53like a servant's girl's eyes on her mistress's hand.
- 2:59Like if there was a high and low thing going on.
- 3:02I just don't know. But I I wonder what it would
- 3:05have sounded like to hear the children of Israel on the road
- 3:10singing these songs. So let's dive into it and see
- 3:12what God has for us. Verse #1I lift my eyes to you,
- 3:16the 1 enthroned. In heaven.
- 3:20We get earthly minded. We care about the here and now.
- 3:25We care about our four O 1 KS. We care about what's in our bank
- 3:29account. We care about when the kids next
- 3:34sports event or practice is. We care about when's my next
- 3:39doctor's appointment. We get so earthly minded and I
- 3:44want to every time that we're at Tabernacle talk, I want us to
- 3:48lift our eyes up to see that there was more than just the
- 3:53here and now. There's a song that I love here
- 3:56and by Steven Curtis Chapman. It's the song More to this life
- 4:02and I the the chorus. I don't know it as well as I
- 4:05know some other songs. So I'm going to try and do my
- 4:08best. I'll I'll link it in the show
- 4:10notes for us. There's more to this life than
- 4:13living and dying, more than just trying to make it through the
- 4:17day, more to this life than than these eyes could ever see.
- 4:24And there's more that this life alone, more than this life alone
- 4:29can be. And I love that thought of he's
- 4:33talking in the song about people just going through the mundane
- 4:38and going through difficulties and hardships.
- 4:41But there is more, and that more is our relationship with God
- 4:46that plays into the here and now.
- 4:49It's not just anticipate heaven someday and you know you'll
- 4:55you'll eventually get through the hardships of this life.
- 4:58No, it's more than that. It's that what we do, what we
- 5:01say, even how we think and what our attitudes are play into what
- 5:07our next life will be. That as we reign with Christ for
- 5:121000 years, we will receive according to what we've done
- 5:19that the good that I do in the here and now, truly from the
- 5:24heart for God, for love of people and love of my Lord, it
- 5:30will result in something happening in this next life.
- 5:36Or if I choose to only live for myself, I, I will still be
- 5:40saved, praise the Lord, but I will experience loss on that
- 5:45judgement day that I will not experience everything that I
- 5:49could have had. And I'll tell you guys that just
- 5:51blows my mind that the here and now effects the hereafter.
- 5:58And so I want to, along with the psalmist here, say, God, would
- 6:03you help me to get my eyes off of just the mundane?
- 6:08To say, God, you are enthroned in heaven.
- 6:11And if you're enthroned, it means I'm OK.
- 6:14The king is not worried. The king is not, if you will,
- 6:19pacing the floor of the palace. He's seated and He is OK.
- 6:24He is not worried. And if he is not worried and he
- 6:27is my Father and my Lord and my Master and my Savior, and even
- 6:33from scripture, my friend, then I know that I'm OK.
- 6:37Because if he were not seated, then I could worry a little bit.
- 6:41But he is seated. And because He's seated, I can
- 6:45be seated as well, if you will, metaphorically, that I can calm
- 6:49down a little bit. So often we get anxious.
- 6:53I am one of the worst culprits at that.
- 6:57And I know many of my friends, even even here at Tabernacle,
- 7:00we've commiserated. We've talked together about how
- 7:03easy it can be to fall into worry.
- 7:06And worry says I don't think God's going to take care of me.
- 7:10Worry says I don't know that God knows about the situation, but
- 7:14he does and he cares and he loves and he knows.
- 7:18And so I can rest secure in the love and sovereignty of my King.
- 7:26OK, so that's all verse one, I lift my eyes to you, the one
- 7:29throne in heaven. Verse #2 like a servant's eyes
- 7:32on his master's hand, Like a servant girl's eyes on her
- 7:35mistress's hand. So our eyes are on Yahweh, our
- 7:38God, until He shows us favor here.
- 7:42This would be something like when a servant would do
- 7:47something for the master and they would look to see, all
- 7:51right. Does he like the, you know, cup
- 7:53of wine that I brought him? Is he happy with the garment
- 7:59that I made for him? Is he good and have I done my
- 8:05job in bringing him the book that he wanted or the scroll
- 8:10that he needed? And so they are looking for the
- 8:13mark of approval. You know, nowadays we have like
- 8:15a thumbs up or, you know, if you're particularly goofy, give
- 8:20him the old finger guns. Yeah, sure thing.
- 8:23Thanks, bud. And so here, this is what the
- 8:27psalmist is saying. We are looking attentively to
- 8:30go, all right. Is he happy with what I have
- 8:33done? I think for us on the most basic
- 8:39element, when it comes to our eternal standing, we know that
- 8:44we are in the Father's favor if we have accepted Jesus Christ,
- 8:48that there will never be a day where God casts us out if we
- 8:53have come to know Jesus. When you think about even the
- 8:56warning passages in Matthew 24 and 25, those that are cast out
- 9:03into utter darkness are those that Jesus says I never knew
- 9:08you. And while their actions
- 9:11reinforce the fact that they did not know Jesus, for those of us
- 9:16that do know Jesus, we can know God looks with favor on us and
- 9:21he has joy. He is excited that we are his
- 9:24children. There's not a kind of
- 9:27bittersweet, yeah, they're not going to hell, but man, they
- 9:31they're really stinking it up in the here and now.
- 9:34We can know that we have favor with God, but we can choose, as
- 9:38Paul tells us, to walk worthy of the calling of the vocation that
- 9:44God has called us to. That we are ambassadors for
- 9:48Christ and we can be good ambassadors.
- 9:51And we ought to be those that bring pleasure and joy to the
- 9:57heart of our Father through the way that we live.
- 10:01That every action when I wake up in the morning, I want to do
- 10:05things that would make my Heavenly Father happy.
- 10:09When I am at work like I am right now, I want to do this out
- 10:14of a pure heart that says, God, I know that I'm imperfect.
- 10:18I know that I'm flawed, but I want to be a blessing to someone
- 10:23else through what is done. So God work through my
- 10:26brokenness. And God, would you be glorified
- 10:30in me? And if I'm truly doing that from
- 10:33the heart, then I can know that my Father is pleased.
- 10:36And I want to hear, well done, my good and faithful servant,
- 10:41enter into the joy of your Lord. And I want to live for that
- 10:47statement on that day. And so let's, let's operate.
- 10:52Let's think and speak and act for the favor of our God.
- 10:58We already have it in Jesus, but let's go for some more as well,
- 11:02if you will. We are already we've already won
- 11:05the game because Jesus put us ahead 3 million to nothing.
- 11:11Let's run up the score even more in the power of God's Holy
- 11:16Spirit living and residing and working in us.
- 11:18It is not Brian's goodness that would Curry any more favor with
- 11:22God. It is Jesus and his Spirit
- 11:26living in and through me that would allow anything good to
- 11:30take place. It's Jesus's actions, his words,
- 11:34his love. It is not my own.
- 11:37So I I got to tell you guys I grew up in.
- 11:43I don't know that anyone ever overtly stated this.
- 11:46I think this is just the way that a religious mindset works.
- 11:51I grew up thinking God's really unhappy with me all the time.
- 11:56Like I, I sin, I think wrong things, I say wrong things, I do
- 12:01wrong things I don't want to. I'm struggling with this.
- 12:04I'm not just saying this is who I am and everyone else just has
- 12:08to, you know, kind of deal with it.
- 12:09No, I wanted to follow God and just felt like a straight up
- 12:15failure doing it. And so I never felt like God was
- 12:18pleased with me because I couldn't go very long without
- 12:21sinning. And so I have a sensitivity both
- 12:25towards, I don't want to put a new pressure on anyone to say
- 12:31you are responsible for currying favor with God.
- 12:34But I also want to be faithful to Scripture to say the favor of
- 12:37God rests on me because of the work of Christ and because God's
- 12:41own presence lives inside of me. And if he lives inside of me, he
- 12:45is pleased to dwell within me and he wants me to do good works
- 12:51and he wants me to walk worthy that I can live as though I
- 12:56truly am a child of God and that the Holy Spirit truly lives
- 13:01inside of me. So I, I'm certain that you guys,
- 13:04as you're listening or you're watching, you're like, yeah, I
- 13:07can, I can kind of hear how you have that ping pong match that
- 13:12you have going on even within your head of the favor only
- 13:16comes because of Jesus and his Spirit, and you can participate
- 13:21in receiving that favor. So that's just something I'm
- 13:25wrestling through in my own life.
- 13:28And I'm thankful for the Lord's goodness and patience towards us
- 13:32for those times where we do not do actions in the Spirit that
- 13:37are reflective of the favor of God.
- 13:40Verse #3 show us favor, Yahweh, show us favor, for we've had
- 13:44more than enough contempt. I think about this.
- 13:51Well, actually, no, no, I I'd say I think about this a lot.
- 13:54I've thought about aspects of this before.
- 13:57I didn't really know that I had a verse that I could go to, to
- 14:02pray this back to the Lord. This is something that I've
- 14:06certainly thought a lot over the last year, year and a half where
- 14:14I've gone, Hey, God, you've seen all of these like hardships that
- 14:19I've been walking through. Could you give me a break?
- 14:22Like could you give me some peace?
- 14:25Could you bring some joy? Could you allow there to be, you
- 14:29know, some salvations or someone joining the church or something,
- 14:33'cause it just feels like I'm being constantly beat up.
- 14:37And here in this verse, I echo the psalmist here.
- 14:41Show us favor, Yahweh, show us favor, for we've had more than
- 14:45enough contempt. And I love that Scripture had
- 14:50something here that I didn't even know that God had already
- 14:54phrased out for me, but that echoed the cry of my heart.
- 14:58And I hope that as you go through Psalms that you
- 15:01experience that as well, whether it's your fighting against sin
- 15:05or you're sorry for your sin. You can read Psalm 51 and you
- 15:08go, yeah, God, that's that's all the words that my heart has been
- 15:12crying out. Or here is in Psalm 123 three,
- 15:18that God had this prayer, this song written 2500 years ago that
- 15:25perfectly encapsulates how I felt.
- 15:28And I'm so thankful for that. And that Scripture just brings
- 15:31out these truths from the human heart in a way that is
- 15:36glorifying and honoring to God and honoring what He wants to do
- 15:42in and through US. Verse #4 As the soul ends here,
- 15:46he says we've had more than enough scorn from the arrogance
- 15:50and contempt from the proud. Every person experiences this.
- 15:56And frankly, every person can be the arrogance and the proud.
- 16:01I want to caution you don't live your life with scorn and
- 16:07contempt from others. I'm going to look up these words
- 16:10real quick. To scorn is to deride.
- 16:15It's to jeer at someone else. I love that this word is lag is
- 16:23how it appears to be with the pronunciation thing that I have
- 16:27here. It it's literally to stammer
- 16:30that someone goes, I don't want to be cruel in in any way and
- 16:38how this would come across, but maybe when someone's making fun
- 16:41of another person due to a speech impediment, you know,
- 16:45they might say, I lift my eyes to you and then someone would
- 16:51mock someone that actually had that difficulty in how they were
- 16:55speaking. That's kind of what happens.
- 16:58It's a score and it's it says you are nothing and your
- 17:02difficulties and your sins and your failures have earned my
- 17:07mockery. And so may we never do that to
- 17:11other people. That is something that is so far
- 17:14from the heart of God. And it doesn't matter, frankly,
- 17:18if you see politicians doing it, it doesn't matter If you see
- 17:21people on TV or on, you know, a YouTube short or Instagram reel
- 17:27or TikTok video, do it. Let's not live our lives in
- 17:31mockery and derision of other people.
- 17:34Let's treat them with kindness and love and grace, even as we
- 17:39seek kindness and love and grace from God.
- 17:42So that's scorn from the arrogant and then hear contempt
- 17:45from the proud. It's that you despise someone,
- 17:50that you just don't want to be around them, You don't want to
- 17:53listen to them. And may we not despise other
- 17:58people. Our God has every reason to
- 18:00despise you and I, and yet He does not do so.
- 18:04But we choose to despise other people made in the image of God,
- 18:09who have never sinned against us in the ways that we have sinned
- 18:13against God. So what's the take away for us?
- 18:17Don't be arrogant, don't be proud.
- 18:19Treat others with kindness and love and grace, and if you will
- 18:24favor, just as we seek to operate in the favor of God,
- 18:29operating from the favor given to us in Christ Jesus and the
- 18:33Holy Spirit, that we then do more and more actions that are
- 18:37favorable in the eyes of our heavenly Father.
- 18:41So don't focus on the here and now, Focus on the hereafter.
- 18:45But what you do in the here and now matters hereafter.
- 18:48So treat others with kindness and love and respect and grace,
- 18:53even as you would desire those things to come to you from God.
- 18:57Thanks for tuning in. Have a wonderful day.
- 19:00Next episode will be in Psalm 124.
