- 0:00My wife had been missing for eleven days when
- 0:03her voice came through the baby monitor. She
- 0:07told me not to turn around. Our daughter was
- 0:10asleep against my chest. Behind my chair, someone
- 0:15was breathing. I kept my eyes on the monitor.
- 0:21Its little green light flickered, then my wife
- 0:24whispered again, whatever it asks, don't give
- 0:29it the baby. Eleven days earlier, Hannah had
- 0:34disappeared between our bedroom and the nursery.
- 0:39That was the only way I could describe it. At
- 0:422 .17 in the morning, she got up to check on
- 0:46Sophie. I heard her cross the landing. Then I
- 0:52heard the nursery door close. When I followed
- 0:55her, the room was empty, except for our daughter.
- 1:03The window was locked from inside. The police
- 1:06searched the house, the garden, and the fields
- 1:10behind it. They asked about our marriage. They
- 1:14asked whether Hannah had been depressed. They
- 1:18asked why I'd waited 40 minutes before calling.
- 1:24I never told them what I had done during those
- 1:2740 minutes. I had been listening to her knock,
- 1:34not from the nursery. From somewhere underneath
- 1:38its floor, by the time the officers arrived,
- 1:45it had stopped. Eleven nights later, her voice
- 1:52was coming from the monitor, and something stood
- 1:56behind me that spoke with my wife's voice too.
- 2:07Sophie stirred against my chest on the monitor,
- 2:11began to cry. Don't let her hear the baby. I
- 2:18held my daughter closer. Breathing, Jaime stopped.
- 2:26Then the thing asked why. I wouldn't fall asleep.
- 2:32My voice sounded remarkably ordinary. That frightened
- 2:37me almost as much as anything else. A floorboard
- 2:44creaked. The same board Hannah always stepped
- 2:50over because of the baby. This thing had stepped
- 2:55directly on it. The monitor whispered. Ask her
- 3:00what we called Sophie before she was born. I
- 3:04asked. The answer came immediately. Little bird.
- 3:13Was right my stomach dropped through the monitor
- 3:19Hannah something I could barely understand It
- 3:27knows what you know the thing behind me laughs
- 3:30softly. Who are you talking today? I looked at
- 3:37the monitor screen It was an old model with sound
- 3:43but no camera. I could hear Hannah breathing
- 3:48through it. Then I heard another sound Three
- 3:54faint knocks. I remembered sitting on the nursery
- 3:58floor 11 nights earlier pressing my ear against
- 4:02the boards three knocks three more Behind my
- 4:12chair, the thing moved closer. Its hands settled
- 4:18on my shoulder. Fingers were cold and wet. Give
- 4:24it to me. It's set. You look exhausted, and I
- 4:34spoke quickly. The receiver in your hand isn't
- 4:39connected to the nursery. I stared at it. Of
- 4:46course it was. I bought the set myself. I told
- 4:56it I needed Sophie's bottle. I could see its
- 5:06reflection approaching in the dark microwave
- 5:08door. My wife's nightdress. My wife's hair. But
- 5:17its head was tilted backward. as though listening
- 5:21to something on the ceiling. The cupboard beneath
- 5:30the stairs stood between the sitting room and
- 5:31the kitchen. As I passed it, three knocks sounded
- 5:38from inside. The thing stopped. The first time,
- 5:47its voice changed, and it whispered that she
- 5:55could hear me. I reached for the cupboard handle.
- 6:01The thing seized my wrist. Its grip was painfully
- 6:05strong. Sophie woke. She lifted her head from
- 6:10my chest, looked over my shoulder, smiled, and
- 6:19released me. Something made a small, wounded
- 6:26sound. Mama Sophie said, Her first word, the
- 6:34thing began to sop, pulled the cupboard open,
- 6:39and Aleph folded behind the vacuum cleaner. Her
- 6:44lips were cracked. Her nightdress was filthy.
- 6:49She held those measures in this trance man, and
- 6:53Sophie woke. She lifted her head from my chest,
- 6:59looked over my shoulder, and something made a
- 7:10small, wounded sound. Sophie said, her first
- 7:19word, and Aleph were not dead.
