- 0:22SPEAKER_00: We've been working our way through a series on making money as a writer.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And on today's episode, we're talking about a service that can take a lot of different forms and can also be fairly lucrative if you make this a core part of your overall business.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And we're talking about coaching.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Now, coaching is a very broad term that can mean a lot of different things in different contexts.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: But generally, coaching refers to the idea that you are there to help your client become more successful in a specific area.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Coaching is normally done in either an individual or a group setting, and it can also be done as either a one-off coaching session, like a one-time thing, or as something that's ongoing over a period of time.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: So if you have specialized knowledge in a certain area, coaching can be a great opportunity for you to help people in a much deeper way than they can be helped by reading a book or a blog post or something like that.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: I've benefited a lot from coaching in different ways over the years.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Two of the paid masterminds that I'm in right now include individual coaching as part of the group structure.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And twice in the past year, I've paid coaches for one-off sessions on specific topics.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Now I'm a huge fan of coaching because it's basically a fast track to success in a specific area.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: For example, I hired my good friend John Shookman, who is a social media coach for real estate agents, to do an hour of coaching with me on social media for The Daily Rider.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: And I learned things from him in one hour that I could never have figured out on my own about this topic because I'm just not motivated enough to dig into it on my own and do all the study.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: You know, coaching is basically like a shortcut to success.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Now, I have never personally offered group coaching, but I've done a lot of individual coaching, primarily related to helping people with their books.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: Now, as a writer, you can do the exact same thing.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: You have specialized knowledge in specific areas.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And a simple way to get started is to offer one-on-one coaching around the same topic that you write about.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: And your books and other content can be a really great way to promote your coaching services, which allows somebody to get individual help in a way that they can't experience just by reading your books.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: If you're just getting started with coaching, I recommend the incredible book called The Prosperous Coach, written by co-written by Rich Litvin.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: It's one of the best business books I've ever read, honestly.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I'd also recommend offering a few coaching sessions for free as a way to help you get some practice and also provide you with some testimonials if you want to take your coaching practice further.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So coaching is a deep, deep area that uh, you know, there are a lot of people who do that as their full-time gig, and that's totally great.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: I don't choose to do that because it's just one thing that I want to offer among a variety of ways to help people.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: But you can do with coaching whatever you want, and I think it's a wonderful way.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Uh it's one of the wonderful things that you can offer as a paid service to people that can really help them in a very, very direct way.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: So here's the question for today: how can you expand your knowledge and impact by offering group or individual coaching as part of your overall business?
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Why don't you give that some thought because coaching can be a very quick and simple way to help people and also make some extra income as a writer?
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Hey, I want to give a big thanks to today's sponsor, Plotter.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Plotter is the number one visual book planning software for writers that helps you plan books in the same way that you think.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Plotter has this really cool intuitive visual interface that lets plotting be the creative process that it's supposed to be.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: And plotter is not just for fiction writers, it's also a great tool for nonfiction authors, podcasters, speakers, and anybody creating content to help them organize their material and story points.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I am just not getting started in my journey with plotter, but I have been enormously impressed with the tools that are there and how it can help you lay out your story.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Now, you heard it first here on the Daily Writer Podcast.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: I'm actually working on my first fiction book, and it's not going to be out for quite a while because I've got a long way to go with it, but I'm using Plotter to help me with this book, and it's really been enormously helpful.
