Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Right, let's go to Northland where this woman was killed
- 0:02Speaker 1: in a dog attack has been named by a police
- 0:04Speaker 1: now a third person to be killed by dogs in
- 0:07Speaker 1: Northland in the last four years. Shane Jones's jail sentences
- 0:11Speaker 1: for owners of roaming animals. You've got to crack down
- 0:14Speaker 1: and crack down hard. Mark Vett is dogs in owner
- 0:17Speaker 1: and pet behavior expert and joins me this morning, Mark,
- 0:20Speaker 1: good morning, right, you very well, thank you. What do
- 0:25Speaker 1: you do? How do you stop this? Because it's it's
- 0:28Speaker 1: clearly becoming a problem.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it is. It's definitely a problem. And I
- 0:33Speaker 2: mean it was interesting to read a little bit. I
- 0:35Speaker 2: mean very sad and you know, sema heart goes out
- 0:39Speaker 2: to the fine out there of the person killed. It's yeah,
- 0:45Speaker 2: it's a really sad situation. It sounds like to me
- 0:47Speaker 2: there was in the door control with the other day before.
- 0:51Speaker 2: They've been obviously working on this case for quite a while,
- 0:56Speaker 2: so it's pretty sad that something wasn't done a bit sooner.
- 0:58Speaker 2: But I don't know the circumstances, so it's hard to know.
- 1:03Speaker 2: But it's one of those situations where you've got a
- 1:06Speaker 2: multi dog attack like that dog that attack previously other
- 1:10Speaker 2: animals killed another dog or damaged another dog.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And.
- 1:15Speaker 2: A lot of people were frightened of them. I mean,
- 1:17Speaker 2: that type of situation seems to be pretty obvious that
- 1:19Speaker 2: there's something wrong there. When you've got and it's a
- 1:23Speaker 2: high risk situation, I would have thought that had been done,
- 1:26Speaker 2: something done sooner. Looking at the number of convictions, I
- 1:30Speaker 2: think it's one in there. After all those situations up there,
- 1:34Speaker 2: seems to me like there may be some rethinking there
- 1:37Speaker 2: to be done in their dog control unit up there,
- 1:40Speaker 2: is to how they impound those dogs and do something
- 1:43Speaker 2: about it. Earlier, you know, it still was an attack
- 1:47Speaker 2: about to happen by the sounds of it. But it's
- 1:49Speaker 2: pretty hard to respond just to news that you're speculating on.
- 1:55Speaker 2: You don't know what the teams. The teams a pretty
- 1:59Speaker 2: high level of pressure, I'm sure up there.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'm sure they are. I'm sure they are. But like,
- 2:03Speaker 1: let's forget about that case for a second, mark, Let's
- 2:05Speaker 1: get away from that and just say generally, if a
- 2:08Speaker 1: dog attacks another dog or bites another bites a human
- 2:11Speaker 1: and like it's you know, it's damaging, should they be alive?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Well? No, And in most cases, when when they've got
- 2:19Speaker 2: to a situation, you know, where they've particularly when they're
- 2:24Speaker 2: seriously damaged another animal. Almost invariably there's but certainly by
- 2:29Speaker 2: the second time youth in ages almost definitely on the cards.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I'd be surprised if the cases had gone to court
- 2:36Speaker 2: that there would have been any leniency and at that
- 2:41Speaker 2: level of aggression, normally it's almost the other way around.
- 2:44Speaker 2: But exactly clearly there's there's issues in regard to the punishment.
- 2:49Speaker 2: But really the issue comes down, from my point of view,
- 2:52Speaker 2: to education. I mean, obviously, sitting individuals, you can't simply
- 2:56Speaker 2: educate they're not going to take that type of information.
- 3:00Speaker 2: But I think a very important point is demonstrated to us.
- 3:05Speaker 2: If we actually apply the right understanding in the formative
- 3:09Speaker 2: period the two to four month period and a dog's
- 3:11Speaker 2: life and socialize them, well, that behavior is not going
- 3:14Speaker 2: to happen.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent. Mark Mark Vett, who's with us
- 3:18Speaker 1: this morning, Dogs in owner and pet behavior expert.
