Chapter thirty one, The Treasure Hunt, Flint's pointer, Jim said silver when
0:07
we were alone, if I saved your life, you've saved mine, and
0:13
I'll not forget it. I seen the doctor waving you to run for it
0:19
with the tail of my eye. I did, and I seen you say
0:23
no as plain as hearing. Jim, that's one to you. This is
0:28
the first clint of hope I had since the tack failed, and I owe
0:33
it to you. And now, Jim, we're to go in for this
0:38
treasure hunting. We'd sealed orders too, and I don't like it. And
0:44
you and me must stick close back to back like and we'll save our necks
0:50
in spite of fat and fortune. Just then a man hailed us from the
0:55
fire that breakfast was ready, and we were soon seated here and there about
1:00
the sand over biscuit and fried junk. They had lighted a fire fit to
1:04
roast an ox, and it was now grown so hot that they could only
1:08
approach it from the windward, and even there not without precaution. In the
1:14
same wasteful spirit they had cooked I suppose three times more than we could eat.
1:19
And one of them, with an empty laugh, threw what was left
1:23
into the fire, which blazed and roared again over this unusual fuel. I
1:29
never in my life saw men so careless of the morrow. Hand to mouth
1:34
is the only word that can describe their way of doing, and what with
1:38
wasted food and sleeping sentries. Though they were bold enough for a brush and
1:42
be done with it, I could see their entire unfitness for anything like a
1:47
prolonged campaign. Even Silver, eating away with Captain flint upon his shoulder,
1:53
had not a word of blame for their recklessness. And this the more surprised
1:59
me, for I thought he had never showed himself so cunning as he did.
2:02
Then, oh, mates, said he, it's luck you have barbecue
2:08
to think for you with this here head, I got, Why what did
2:13
I did? Sure enough? They have the ship where they have it?
2:16
I don't know yet, but once we hit the treasurer we'll have to jump
2:22
about and find and then, Mates, it's that as the boats, I
2:27
reckon as the upper And that's he kept running on with his mouth full of
2:31
the hot bacon. Last he restored their hope and confidence, and I,
2:37
more than suspect, repaired his own. At the same time. As for
2:40
hostage, he continued that's my last talk. I guess with them. He
2:46
loves so dear. We've got my piece of news, and thank you to
2:51
him for that. But it's over and done. I'll take him in a
2:54
line when we go treasure hunting, for we'll keep them like so much old
3:00
in case of accident. You mark in the meantime, whence we got the
3:04
ship and treasure both and off to sea like jolly companions. Wh then we'll
3:09
talk mister Orkins over we will. It will give him his share, to
3:14
be sure, for all his kindness, it was no wonder the men were
3:19
in good humor. Now for my part, I was horribly cast down.
3:23
Should the scheme he now sketched prove feasible, silver already doubly a traitor would
3:30
not hesitate to adopt it. He had still a foot in either camp,
3:34
and there was no doubt he would prefer wealth and freedom with the pirates to
3:38
a bear escape from hanging, which was the best he had to hope on
3:42
our side. Nay, and even if things fell out that he was forced
3:46
to keep his faith with doctor Livesey, even then, what danger lay before
3:52
us? What a moment that would be when the suspicions of his followers turned
3:57
to certainty, and he and I should have to fight for dear life,
4:01
he a cripple and I a boy, against five strong and active seamen.
4:06
Add to this double apprehension the mystery that still hung over the behavior of my
4:12
friends, their unexplained desertion of the stockade, their inexplicable session of the chart,
4:19
or harder still to understand the doctor's last warning to Silver, look out
4:25
for squalls when you find it, and you will readily believe how little taste
4:30
I found in my breakfast, and with how uneasy a heart I set forth
4:34
behind my captors on the quest for treasure. We made a curious figure had
4:41
any one been there to see us, all in soiled sailor clothes, and
4:46
all but me armed to the teeth. Silver had two guns slung about him,
4:50
one before and one behind, besides the great cutlass at his waist,
4:56
and a pistol in each pocket of his square tailed coat. To complete his
5:00
strange appearance, Captain Flint sat perched upon his shoulder and gabbled odds and ends
5:05
of purposeless sea talk. I had a line about my waist, and followed
5:12
obediently after the sea cook, who held the loose end of the rope,
5:15
now in his free hand, now between his powerful teeth. For all the
5:19
world I was led like a dancing bear. The other men were variously burdened,
5:26
some carrying picks and shovels, for that had been the very first necessary
5:30
They brought ashore from the Hispaniola, others laden with pork, bread and brandy
5:35
for the midday meal. All the stores I observed came from our stock.
5:41
I could see the truth of Silver's words the night before. Had he not
5:46
struck a bargain with the doctor, he and his mutineers, deserted by the
5:49
ship must have been driven to subsist on clear water, and the proceeds of
5:55
their hunting water would have been little to their taste. A sailor is not
5:59
usually a good shot, and besides all that, when they were so short
6:02
of eatables, it was not likely they would be very flush of powder.
6:09
Well. Thus equipped, we all set out, even the fellow with the
6:12
broken head, who should certainly have kept in shadow, and straggled one after
6:16
another to the beach where the two gigs awaited us. Even these bore trace
6:21
of the drunken folly of the pirates. One in a broken thwart, and
6:27
both in their muddied and unbailed condition, both were to be carried along with
6:31
us for the sake of safety. And so, with our numbers divided between
6:35
them, we set forth upon the bosom of the anchorage. As we pulled
6:41
across, there was some discussion on the chart. The red cross was of
6:46
course far too large to be a guide, and the terms of the note
6:49
on the back, as you will hear, admitted of some ambiguity they ran.
6:57
The reader may remember thus tall true spyglass shoulder bearing a point to the
7:02
n of nne skeleton island e s e and by e ten feet a tall
7:12
tree was thus the principal mark. Now right before us. The anchorage was
7:16
bounded by a plateau from two to three hundred feet high, adjoining on the
7:21
north and sloping southern shoulder of the Spyglass, and rising again toward the south
7:27
into the rough cliffy eminence called the Mizzenmast Hill. The top of the plateau
7:32
was dotted thickly with pine trees of varying height. Here and there one of
7:39
a different species rose forty or fifty feet clear above its neighbours. And which
7:44
of these was the particular tall tree of Captain Flint could only be decided on
7:48
the spot and by the readings of the compass. Yet although that was the
7:55
case, every man on board the boats had picked a favorite of his own.
7:59
Air we were half way over long John alone, shrugging his shoulders and
8:03
bidding them weaight till they were there. We pulled easily, by Silver's directions
8:09
not to weary the hands prematurely, and after quite a long passage, landed
8:15
at the mouth of the second river, that which runs down a woody cleft
8:18
of the spyglass. Thence bending to our left, we began to ascend the
8:24
slope towards the plateau. At the very outset, heavy miry ground and a
8:30
matted marsh vegetation greatly delayed our progress. But by little and little the hill
8:37
began to steepen and become stony underfoot, and the wood to change its character
8:43
and to grow in a more open order. It was indeed a most pleasant
8:48
portion of the island that we were now approaching. A heavy scented broom,
8:52
and many flowering shrubs had almost taken the place of grass. Thickets of green
8:58
nutmeg trees were dotted here and there with the red columns and the broad shadow
9:03
of the pines, and the first mingled their spice with the aroma of the
9:07
others. The air, besides, was fresh and stirring, and this under
9:11
the sheer sunbeams, was a wonderful refreshment to our senses. The party spread
9:16
itself abroad in a fan shape, shouting and leaping to and fro about the
9:22
center, and a good way behind the rest Silver and I followed, I
9:28
tethered by my rope, he plowing with deep pants among the sliding gravel.
9:33
From time to time, indeed, I had to lend him a hand,
9:37
or he must have missed his footing and fallen backward down the hill. We
9:41
had thus proceeded for about half a mile and were approaching the brow of the
9:46
plateau when the man upon the farthest left began to cry aloud, as if
9:50
in terror. Shout after shout came from him, and the others began to
9:54
run in his direction. He can't have found the treasure, said old Morgan,
10:01
hurrying past us from the right, for that's cleaner top. Indeed,
10:05
as we found when we also reached the spot, it was something very different
10:11
at the foot of a pretty big pine and involved in deep creeper, which
10:16
had even partly lifted some of the smaller bones. A human skeleton lay with
10:22
a few shreds of clothing on the ground. I believe a chill struck for
10:28
a moment to every heart. He was a seaman, said George Merry,
10:33
who bolder than the rest, had gone up close and was examining the rags
10:37
of clothing. Leastways, this is good sea cloth, Aye, aye,
10:45
said silver, like enough, you wouldn't look to find a bishop here,
10:50
I reckon, But what sort of a way is that for bones? Tolly
10:54
tain't in nature. Indeed, on a second glance, it seemed impossible to
11:00
fancy that the body was in a natural position but for some disarray, the
11:05
work perhaps of the birds that had fed upon him, or the slow growing
11:09
creeper that had gradually enveloped his remains. The man lay perfectly straight, his
11:15
feet pointing in one direction, his hands raised above his head like a diver's,
11:20
pointing directly in the opposite. I've taken a notion into my old numbskull,
11:28
observed silver. Here's the compass. There's the tip top point of skeleton,
11:33
an island sticking out like a tooth. Just take a bearing will yer
11:39
along the line of them bones. It was done. The body pointed straight
11:45
in the direction of the island, and the compass read duly east southeast by
11:52
east. I thought, so, cried the cook. This here is a
11:58
pointer right up there is our loin for the pole star and the jolly dollars.
12:05
But boy, thunder, if it don't make me cold inside to think
12:09
of flint. This is one of his jokes. And no mistake him in
12:16
these six was alone here. He killed them, every man, and this
12:20
one he all here and laid down by the compass, shivering. My timbers
12:26
their long bones, and the air has been yellow. Aye, that would
12:31
be allered. Dice you mind, aler, dice Tom Morgan Aye, Aye,
12:39
returned Morgan. I mind him. He owed me money, he did,
12:43
and he took my knife ashore with him. Speaking of knives, said
12:48
another, Why don't we find isn't lying around? Flint worked the man to
12:52
pick a seaman's pocket, and the birds, I guess would leave it be
12:58
bye the poor. And that's true, cried Silver. There ain't a thing
13:03
left here, said Mary, still feeling round among the bones. Not a
13:07
copper, do it, nor a backy box. It don't look natural to
13:13
me, No, boy, gomet don't agreed. Silver, not natural nor
13:20
not nice, says you, great guns mess meats. But if Flint was
13:24
living, this would be a hot spot for you and me. Six they
13:30
were, and six are a wee and bones is what they are. Now.
13:35
I saw him dead with these here deadlights, said Morgan. Billy took
13:39
me in there he laid with penny pieces on his eyes. Dead. Aye,
13:46
sure enough he's dead and gone below, said the fellow with the bandage.
13:52
But if ever spirit walked, it would be Flint's dear Harby. He
13:56
died bad, did Flint? Aye? That he did observed another. Now
14:01
we raged, and now he hollered for the rum, and now we sang.
14:05
Fifteen men were his only song mates. And I tell you true,
14:11
I never rightly liked to hear it, since it was may not and the
14:16
windy was open. And I hear that old song are coming out as clear
14:20
as clear, and the death haul on the man already come come, said
14:26
Silver, stole this tark. He's dead and he don't walk that I know,
14:33
least the ways he won't walk. By day you made later that care
14:37
killed a cat fetch a head for the doubloons. We started, certainly,
14:43
but in spite of the hot sun and the staring daylight, the pirates no
14:48
longer ran separate and shouting through the wood, but kept side by side and
14:54
spoke with bated breath. The terror of the dead buccaneer had fallen their spirits.
15:01
End of chapter thirty one, Chapter thirty two, The treasure Hunt the
15:09
voice among the trees. Partly from the damping influence of this alarm, partly
15:16
to rest Silver and the sick folk. The whole party sat down as soon
15:22
as they had gained the brow of the ascent, the plateau being somewhat tilted
15:26
toward the west. This spot on which we had paused, commanded a wide
15:30
prospect on either hand before us, over the tree tops, we held the
15:35
cape of the woods, fringed with surf. Behind. We not only looked
15:39
down upon the anchorage and Skeleton Island, but saw clear across the spit and
15:46
the eastern lowlands, a great field of open sea upon the east sheer.
15:50
Above us rose the spyglass, here dotted with single pines, there black with
15:56
precipices. There was no but that of the distant breakers mounting from all around,
16:03
and the chirp of countless insects in the brush. Not a man,
16:08
not a sail on the sea. The very largeness of the view increased the
16:14
sense of solitude. Silver, as he sat, took certain bearings with his
16:19
compass. There are three tall trees, said he, about in the right
16:26
lome from Skelleton Neyland, spy glass shoulder. I take it means that lure
16:33
point there. It's child's plate, a foind the stuff. Now if half
16:37
a mint to dine first. I don't feel sharp, growled Morgan, thinking
16:45
a flint. I think it were as done me. Well, MYI,
16:49
sir, you praise your stars. He's dead, said Silver. He was
16:56
an ugly devil, cried a third pirate with a shudder. That blew in
17:00
the face too. That was how the rum took him, added Merry Blue.
17:07
Woa, I reckon, he was blue. That's a true word.
17:11
Ever since they had found the skeleton and got upon this train of thought,
17:15
they had spoken lower and lower, and they had almost got to whispering by
17:21
now, so that the sound of their talk hardly interrupted the silence of the
17:25
wood. All of a sudden, out of the middle of the trees in
17:29
front of us. A thin, high trembling voice struck up the well known
17:34
air and words fifty men on the dead man's chest, Yo, ho ho,
17:41
and about twelve rum. I never have seen men more dreadfully affected than
17:48
the pirates. The color went from their six faces like enchantment. Some leaped
17:55
to their feet, some clawed hold of others. Morgan groveled on the ground.
18:00
It flint py, cried Mary. The song had stopped as suddenly as
18:07
it began broken off, you would have said, in the middle of a
18:10
note, as though someone had laid his hand upon the singer's mouth. Coming
18:15
so far through the clear and sunny atmosphere among the green tree tops, I
18:19
thought it had sounded airily and sweetly. And the effect on my companions was
18:25
the stranger come, said Silver, struggling with his ashen lips to get the
18:30
word out. That won't do stand by to go a belt. This is
18:36
a room star. And I can't name the voice, but it's someone's Skylarkin,
18:41
someone that's flesh and blurred. And you may laid that his courage had
18:47
come back as he spoke, and some of the color to his face along
18:51
with it. Already the others had began to lend an ear to this encouragement,
18:56
and were coming a little to themselves when the same voice broke out again,
19:00
not this time singing, but in a faint, distant hail that echoed
19:06
yet fainter among the clefts of the spyglass. Darby McGraw, it wailed,
19:14
for that is the word that best describes the sound, Darby McGraw, Darby
19:19
McGraw, again and again and again, and then rising a little higher,
19:26
and with an oath that I leave out fetch half the rum Darby. The
19:30
buccaneers remained rooted to the ground, their eyes starting from their heads. Long
19:37
after the voice had died away, they still stared in silence, dreadfully before
19:42
them. That fixes it gasped one. Let's go They was his last words,
19:49
moaned Morgan, his last words. Above board, Dick had his bible
19:55
out and was praying volubly. He had been well brought up, had Dick.
20:00
Before he had come to sea and fell among bad companions. Still silver
20:04
was unconquered. I could hear his teeth rattle in his head, but he
20:08
had not surrendered. Nobody in this ere island ever heard of Daby. He
20:14
muttered not one but us that's here, and then making a great effort shipmates,
20:22
he cried, O mere to get that stuff, and I'll not be
20:25
beat by man nor devil. I never was feared of flint in his life,
20:30
and by their powers, I'll face him dead. There's seven hundred thousand
20:36
pounds, not a quarter of a mile from here. When did ever a
20:40
gentleman of fortune show his stirr into that much dollars for a boozy old seaman
20:45
with a blue mug, and him dead too? But there was no sign
20:49
of reawakening courage in his followers, rather indeed of growing terror at the irreverence
20:56
of his words. Belay there, John said, Mary, don't you cross
21:00
a spirit? And the rest were all too terrified to reply. They would
21:04
have run away severally had they dared, but fear kept them together and kept
21:10
them close to John, as if his daring helped them. He, on
21:14
his part, had pretty well fought his weakness down. Spirit waw may be,
21:22
he said, But there's one thing not clearer than me. There was
21:26
an echo, No no mine ever seen a spirit wear shadow? Well?
21:32
Then was he doing with an echo? To whom I should like to know?
21:37
That a't inneature, Sharlie. This argument seemed weak enough to me,
21:42
but you can never tell what will affect the superstitious. And to my worry,
21:48
George Merry was greatly relieved. Well that's so, he said, you've
21:53
had upon your shoulders, John, And no mistake, boutship mates, This
22:00
here crew is on a wrong tack. I do believe, and you come
22:03
to think on it. It was like Flint's voice, I grant you,
22:08
but not just so clear away like it. After all, it was like
22:14
somebody else's voice. Now it was like a boy the porors. Ben Gunn
22:22
roared, silver ah, and so it were, cried Morgan, springing on
22:27
his knees. Ben Gunn, it were it don't make much odds, do
22:32
it, now, asked Dick. Ben Gunn's not hearing the body any more
22:37
of Flint. But the older hands greeted this remark with scorn. Why nobody
22:44
minds ben Gunn cried, Mary dead or alive? Nobody minds him. It
22:49
was extraordinary how their spirits had returned, and how the natural color had revived
22:55
in their faces. Soon they were chatting together with intervals of listening, and
23:00
not long after, hearing no further sound, they shouldered the tools and set
23:06
forth again, Mary walking first with Silver's compass to keep them on the right
23:11
line with Skeleton Island. He had said the truth, dead or alive.
23:15
Nobody minded ben Gunn. Dick alone still held his Bible and looked around him
23:22
as he went with fearful glances. But he found no sympathy, and Silver
23:27
even joked him on his precautions. Oh he told you, said he,
23:33
Oh, he told you you had spoiled your boyble. If it ain't no
23:37
good to swear, boy, what you suppose a spirit will give for it?
23:41
Not that? And he snapped his big fingers, halting a moment on
23:45
his crutch. But Dick was not to be comforted. Indeed, it was
23:49
soon plain to me that the lad was falling sick, hastened by heat,
23:55
exhaustion, and the shock of his alarm. The fever predicted by the doctor
24:00
Livesey was evidently growing swiftly higher. It was fine open walking here upon the
24:06
summit. Our way lay a little down hill, For as I have said,
24:11
the plateau tilted toward the west. The pines great and small, grew
24:15
wide apart, and even between the clumps of nutmeg and azalea wide open spaces,
24:22
baked in the hot sunshine, Striking as we did, pretty near northwest
24:26
across the island. We drew, on the one hand, even nearer under
24:30
the shoulders of the spyglass, and on the other looked even wider over that
24:36
western bay where I had once tossed and trembled in the coracle. The first
24:41
of the tall trees was reached, and by the bearing proved the wrong one.
24:45
So with the second and the third, rose nearly two hundred feet into
24:51
the air above a clump of underwood, A giant of a vegetable, with
24:56
a red column as big as a cottage, and a wide shadow, a
24:59
red in which a company could have maneuvered. It was conspicuous far to sea,
25:04
both on the east and west, and might have been entered as a
25:08
sailing mark upon the chart. But it was not its size that now impressed
25:14
my companions. It was the knowledge that seven hundred thousand pounds in gold lay
25:19
somewhere buried below its spreading shadow. The thought of the money, as they
25:26
drew nearer, swallowed up their previous terrors. Their eyes burned in their heads,
25:33
their feet grew speedier and lighter, their whole soul was bound up in
25:37
that fortune, that whole lifetime of extravagance and pleasure that lay awaiting there for
25:45
each of them. Silver hobbled, grunting on his crutch, His nostrils stood
25:51
out and quivered. He cursed like a madman when the flies settled on his
25:55
hot and shiny countenance. He plucked furiously at the lion that held me to
26:00
him, and from time to time turned his eyes upon me with a deadly
26:04
look. Certainly he took no pains to hide his thoughts, and certainly I
26:10
read them like print. In the immediate nearness of the gold, all else
26:15
had been forgotten. His promise and the doctor's warning were both things of the
26:21
past, and I could not doubt that he hoped to seize upon the treasure
26:25
find and bored the hispaniola under cover of night, cut every honest throat about
26:30
that island, and sail away as he had first intended. Laden with crimes
26:37
and riches. Shaken as I was with these alarms, it was hard for
26:41
me to keep up with the rapid race of the treasure hunters. Now and
26:47
again I stumbled. And it was then that Silver plucked so roughly at the
26:51
rope and launched at me his murderous glances. Dick, who had dropped behind
26:56
us and now brought up the rear, was babbling to Hi himself, both
27:00
prayers and curses, as his fever kept rising. This also added to my
27:06
wretchedness and to crown all. I was haunted by the thought of the tragedy
27:11
that had once been acted on that plateau, when that ungodly buccaneer with the
27:15
blue face, he who had died at Savannah singing and shouting for drink,
27:21
had there with his own hand cut down his six accomplices. This grove that
27:26
was now so peaceful, must have rung with cries, I thought, And
27:32
even with the thought, I could believe I heard it ringing. Still.
27:37
We were now at the margin of the thicket. Huzzah. Mates altogether shouted
27:41
Mary, and the foremost broke into a run, and suddenly, not ten
27:47
yards farther we beheld them stop a low cry. Arose Silver doubled his pace,
27:53
