- 0:15Kearns: A cardigan game in this movie is on point.
- 0:18It's like a cardigan robe.
- 0:20Ryan: Yeah, it is.
- 0:21he wears it with such class, like, it never leaves him.
- 0:26They made it a point to make sure cardigan can always fit.
- 0:29Ethan Hawke the entire movie.
- 0:31Kearns: It's true.
- 0:32It's true.
- 0:33Ryan: And he's dapper.
- 0:34He's dapper.
- 0:35Kearns: and like the bottle of bourbon or whatever he is carrying
- 0:37around the whole time too.
- 0:39Jon: he's a writer.
- 0:39He has to have alcohol in a card.
- 0:42Kearns: It's the big stereotype.
- 0:44Yeah.
- 0:44I remember watching the
- 0:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 0:46Kearns: like, that's very beat generation of them.
- 0:50Very Carolyn.
- 0:51Ryan: tried it.
- 0:52It doesn't work on my end when writing,
- 0:54Kearns: think
- 0:54Ryan: it's like, uh,
- 0:56Kearns: I think you're supposed to be hung over while writing to be, you know that
- 0:59Ryan: what was it?
- 1:00Kearns: artist that's being weighed down by your own trauma and, and your genius.
- 1:06Ryan: I think it was Ernest Hemingway or Sie Hinton who said it.
- 1:09Um, he said, drink first, then write, and then.
- 1:14Fix it up sober.
- 1:16Kearns: it up sober.
- 1:17I mean, okay.
- 1:18Doesn't work for
- 1:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:20I, that's why the old man, the sea is what it is.
- 1:23If he did that,
- 1:24Kearns: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26Jon: I hate that book.
- 1:30Ryan: that's why I mentioned it.
- 1:32Kearns: What's wrong with it?
- 1:33Jon: Number one.
- 1:34Ryan: It's an old man, the sea.
- 1:36Jon: in the sea.
- 1:36Number two, forced me to read it.
- 1:39If you forced me to read
- 1:41Kearns: Uh
- 1:42Jon: it.
- 1:44Kearns: oh.
- 1:44I love the epic struggle stuff.
- 1:45I love frost poems about just struggling against nature and ultimately
- 1:50losing, and the old man of the sea.
- 1:53It's like, look, everything's gonna be okay.
- 1:55He's gonna be able to eat again, and no, just rips through his fricking
- 1:58hands and the sharks get the fish.
- 2:02Ryan: It's the overhype.
- 2:03It's the overhype and the comparing of Gatsby.
- 2:06When they compare it, it, yeah.
- 2:09I'm like, no, there's, there's a difference right here.
- 2:12a big difference.
- 2:13Kearns: it's, it's the hard part about teaching Dickens too.
- 2:15I mean, this is a podcast about the movie Sinister everybody.
- 2:18Sorry.
- 2:18But it's so difficult because Victorian English and stuff is so verbose and our
- 2:24kids are used to like tiktoks and it's tech speak and emojis, nobody can handle
- 2:29like David Copperfield or The Grapes of Wrath, even as for American Lit stuff.
- 2:36But I
- 2:36Ryan: They, they handle a tale of two cities pretty well.
- 2:39Kearns: book
- 2:39Ryan: I will say that.
- 2:40Kearns: read a Tale, two Cities Guys out there in the world and gals out there in
- 2:43the world, it is one of the best endings to any story ever, ever, ever, ever.
- 2:49Ryan: or the easy ways to watch the dark night rises.
- 2:51Ignite Rises.
- 2:51Kearns: because it is the same The Nolan Brothers wrote the script.
- 2:58Completely mirroring the plot of a Tale of two Cities.
- 3:01And now we're gonna move on to Sinister, which is an
- 3:05Ryan: I was gonna say.
- 3:05Kearns: a great moving plot.
- 3:06Ryan: Ethan Hawke plays Ellison Oswalt, who is now a true crime writer.
- 3:10He was originally a fiction writer and a textbook author as well as a
- 3:15college professor it seems, who goes into true crime, and it leads him to
- 3:20Chad for Pennsylvania, which I'll be honest, I, it took me years to watch
- 3:25this film and because of the podcast and everything, I'm so happy I watched it.
- 3:29Kearns: We've been
- 3:30Ryan: It's so good.
- 3:32You have, you have
- 3:33Kearns: to watch this damn movie.
- 3:34I tell you about this movie all the time.
- 3:36I'm like, I love it
- 3:37Jon: exclusively made the calendar to make you watch it.
- 3:41Kearns: I mean,
- 3:42Ryan: I, I'm fine with it.
- 3:43It's on my Christmas list.
- 3:44Santa, please give, deliver it to me in 4K.
- 3:47Kearns: all the time.
- 3:48Um, people think it's the same movie at times.
- 3:50It came out around the same era, right?
- 3:53I think it did.
- 3:54I mean a couple
- 3:55Ryan: Yeah.
- 3:55Yes.
- 3:57I think Insidious was 2010.
- 4:00Kearns: Yeah.
- 4:00Give or take.
- 4:02So
- 4:02Ryan: Right.
- 4:03Kearns: and, um, insidious.
- 4:05And what's the other one that everybody thinks are the same with the Warrens?
- 4:10the same
- 4:11Ryan: Oh, conjuring
- 4:12Kearns: Everybody thinks those are the same movies, and then sinister is
- 4:14kind of in the orbit of that later on.
- 4:17But in City, our sinister is just a much better film.
- 4:21Much better
- 4:22Ryan: y. Yes.
- 4:23More thrilling too.
- 4:25I was on the edge of my seat.
- 4:26But the thing is, I feel like I've jumped more with Insidious with Sinter.
- 4:31I jumped a couple times, but I was so glued to the plot and the acting and
- 4:36the story that it just makes you like go, Ugh, this is really happening.
- 4:41As we get into it and then you're like, crap at the end.
- 4:45I, I was so drawn into it more than the scares, to be honest.
- 4:48Which is a good thing too, I think for a film,
- 4:50Kearns: Heavy
- 4:51Ryan: film.
- 4:51Kearns: everybody, but uh,
- 4:53Ryan: Oh, damn.
- 4:54Straight.
- 4:55Kearns: is usually where I, I gripe with movies.
- 4:58Sinister didn't bother me.
- 5:00It, I didn't feel like it was using the kids as a crutch or anything.
- 5:02It didn't feel like that's where the scares came from or where
- 5:04they was trying to, they were pulling the heartstrings there.
- 5:07But maybe it's, 'cause I watched it, uh, years before I had kids,
- 5:12give or take, no, not 10 years, like six, seven years before I had kids,
- 5:17Jon: Yeah.
- 5:19Kearns: would be,
- 5:20Jon: can't tell you
- 5:22Kearns: he couldn't tell me, Hey, how do you pronounce the demon's name?
- 5:26Jon: be,
- 5:29Kearns: It's a
- 5:32So is that a real anti, I'm a big theology guy and myth
- 5:36guy, and I've never heard of a
- 5:37Jon: think it was made up for the movie.
- 5:41Kearns: Okay.
- 5:41So they were like, it's a Sumerian monster that lives in photographs.
- 5:45Yeah.
- 5:47Ryan: I feel like they took a lot of traditions and Blended it all into one.
- 5:51the face is very like, it's mixed.
- 5:54It's mixed with Pazuzu.
- 5:56It's mixed with a couple other, I feel demons.
- 5:58they just picked and chose.
- 6:00Jon: type that works for this kind of movie, like,
- 6:04Ryan: Yes.
- 6:04Jon: and Halloween works because you have them like in the shadows and you,
- 6:09light picks up the mask, and that's what all you see of him for a long time.
- 6:15Ryan: Yeah.
- 6:16Yep.
- 6:16Kearns: I never thought about it like that actually, that like working because
- 6:19of being in the lighting and stuff.
- 6:22Um,
- 6:23Ryan: The, the idea of him being the shape, and you can even
- 6:27put it in here where, uh, Mr. Boogie, I'll call him Mr. Boogie.
- 6:31'cause I like Mr. Boogie.
- 6:33When they do like the pictures, when Ethan Hawke is like looking into it and
- 6:37he's looking into Mr. Bookie and the deaths of this family and other families,
- 6:42eventually you see his silhouette and him in the pictures and the reflections
- 6:47and it's just so subtle and that's what they feel with the sequel because
- 6:52you want him to be such a mystery and it they do it so well and then it's
- 6:58like having him out in the light.
- 7:00It doesn't work
- 7:02for Michael Myers.
- 7:03Yes, because you make him nor you normalize him.
- 7:06Mr. Boogie is a demon.
- 7:07You can't really normalize a demon, you know
- 7:09Kearns: Mr. Boogie.
- 7:11Mr. Boogie
- 7:12Jon: I think, we'll get into some of the problems with the sequel a little bit
- 7:16later on, but I have a game for you guys.
- 7:20Kearns: again?
- 7:21Ryan: Yes.
- 7:22Kearns: Oh, no.
- 7:23Okay.
- 7:24Jon: it's a
- 7:25Ryan: it a mask game?
- 7:27Oh, okay.
- 7:29Jon: rank with,
- 7:31Kearns: Yeah.
- 7:31Ryan loves these.
- 7:32Jon: with,
- 7:35Ryan: I do.
- 7:35Kearns: the Gogos.
- 7:36Jon: to guess the
- 7:38Ryan: Yes.
- 7:39Kearns: Oh, okay,
- 7:41Ryan: Oh, we've done this before.
- 7:42Jon: this, it's gonna be really important to guess the theme pretty early.
- 7:46Kearns: okay, okay.
- 7:49Don't give him any help.
- 7:50'cause he got the theme so fast.
- 7:51The last two times.
- 7:53Jon: I
- 7:54Kearns: I think I got the one before that.
- 7:55Jon: he will get it on the first one.
- 8:00Alright.
- 8:01Kearns: It's a Heney right there.
- 8:03Jon: That,
- 8:04Ryan: Revenge.
- 8:08Okay.
- 8:08Jon: So
- 8:09one to do we have I spit on your grave.
- 8:12And the little bit of trivia I'll throw out about this poster.
- 8:15Do you know who that is?
- 8:18Ryan: That is Brook Shields.
- 8:22Kearns: extra.
- 8:22Ryan: Shields.
- 8:23Kearns: air anywhere.
- 8:24Jon: it is to me Moore.
- 8:26Kearns: Really?
- 8:28Ryan: Moore.
- 8:29I was,
- 8:29Kearns: her
- 8:29Ryan: I was just reading about her.
- 8:31Jon: poster.
- 8:32Kearns: They were like, who's got a great ass in Hollywood?
- 8:34You know what?
- 8:35Good to be
- 8:36Ryan: Demi Moore,
- 8:37Kearns: make 30 5K to me?
- 8:40Wow.
- 8:40Jon: Yep.
- 8:42Ryan: Private Jane.
- 8:43Sergeant Jane.
- 8:44Jon: gi
- 8:46Ryan: Private Jane.
- 8:46Right.
- 8:47Gi,
- 8:47Jon: Jane.
- 8:48Ryan: GI Jane.
- 8:49There we go.
- 8:50Jon: probably a private
- 8:51Ryan: Who was,
- 8:52Kearns: actually.
- 8:56Ryan: that was a little indecent, uh, proposal right there.
- 9:00Jon: It ha it did have some substance behind it.
- 9:05Kearns: what's the one with her and Mike Douglas where she raped him.
- 9:10Ryan: Oh, I know what you're talking, yes.
- 9:13Kearns: next.
- 9:15Jon: All right.
- 9:17Ryan: Well, if
- 9:18Jon: where do
- 9:18Ryan: talking about.
- 9:19Jon: rank?
- 9:19I spit on your grave without having an idea of what's gonna come next.
- 9:24Kearns: Or what the
- 9:25Ryan: If this is the original,
- 9:26Jon: I.
- 9:29Ryan: alright, I'm gonna put it safely at three.
- 9:32I don't know what else you're gonna put on, but that is a three for for me.
- 9:37Kearns: It's a good movie.
- 9:39Ryan: Yes it is.
- 9:40Kearns: of movies.
- 9:41They like the Jodi Foster, uh, of this 20 years ago too.
- 9:45Um,
- 9:47Ryan: Yes.
- 9:48Kearns: with two, but I know John's an absolutely insidious
- 9:50prick when it comes to this stuff.
- 9:52So I'm gonna go with four.
- 9:55I spit on your grave.
- 9:56I'm gonna go the other way.
- 9:58know it seems sacrilegious, but I have a feeling he's got something in store for us
- 10:03Jon: misery
- 10:04Kearns: crazy
- 10:04Ryan: Capture captured coming back from the.
- 10:07Kearns: Well, they didn't though,
- 10:08Jon: crazy women.
- 10:09And what did you say, Ron?
- 10:11Kearns: coming back from the grave.
- 10:12Jon: back from the grave.
- 10:14Kearns: All right, this is
- 10:16Ryan: All right.
- 10:16Kearns: is, women serial killers.
- 10:18Well, she's uh, she's technically a serial killer.
- 10:21Jon: is not women's serial killers.
- 10:22Ryan: Killed in your own home.
- 10:23Jon: in
- 10:24Kearns: He doesn't get killed in his zone home though.
- 10:26Oh, she does?
- 10:26I suppose.
- 10:27Spoiler alert for misery.
- 10:29Jon: That's
- 10:30Kearns: I'm glad I didn't take three because I'm gonna use, I'm gonna
- 10:32use misery right here for three.
- 10:35Ryan: I'll put misery at four.
- 10:37Kearns: misery a lot, but it's, it's a tough watch these days.
- 10:39It's a tough hang.
- 10:41the, the long shot of the snow outside for the 15th time in the movie.
- 10:45And then she's like, cock doodle duty.
- 10:47go, all right, Annie Wilkes, relax.
- 10:50Ryan: Listen, she just wants to serve him.
- 10:52Breakfast in bed, ankles intact.
- 10:54Kearns: it be
- 10:54Ryan: That's all right.
- 10:55Kearns: poster, her left hand was massaging his big toe there?
- 10:58I think that would add something to it.
- 11:01Ooh, look at the skulls.
- 11:02I've never noticed
- 11:04Ryan: Look.
- 11:04Kearns: Now this must be
- 11:06Ryan: Oh, that's cool.
- 11:07Jon: is from the cover of the shout or scream factory
- 11:11Ryan: I was gonna say Screen Factory does awesome.
- 11:15Covers when they go into detail.
- 11:17We were talking about that Friday 13th box set.
- 11:20Not this
- 11:22beautiful art.
- 11:23Sorry.
- 11:23Kearns: or the items?
- 11:25The hammer, the knife.
- 11:26Is this movies where people No.
- 11:30Okay.
- 11:31Jon: next,
- 11:36Ryan: Oh, they're all Stephen King projects.
- 11:38Kearns: your grave isn't.
- 11:41Ryan: Crap.
- 11:42Kearns: He should get, he should lose points for that.
- 11:44He should lose points from previous episodes
- 11:48Ryan: You were, you were like, quick McGraw right there.
- 11:50Jon: minus
- 11:51Kearns: I knew what you were gonna say.
- 11:53And then I gonna unlive myself if I, I missed it again.
- 11:57Jon: ordered them so that you wouldn't make that.
- 12:00Guess.
- 12:02Kearns: He did it anyway.
- 12:04Ryan: I know I span your grave.
- 12:06You could've liked it though.
- 12:07I'm gonna, if this is, if this is the original Salem lot,
- 12:11ah,
- 12:12Jon: TV
- 12:13Ryan: I'm gonna, we have two more after this, right?
- 12:19You know what, I'm gonna put that at number one because I really love the
- 12:23miniseries, the original, especially es, especially a, especially after
- 12:27reading the book, this is like the only true like, adaptation of Salem's lot.
- 12:33That gets it down
- 12:34to a point.
- 12:35Kearns: Kind of.
- 12:36Jon: It's
- 12:37Kearns: I spit on your grave really?
- 12:38Isn't that?
- 12:39Jon: nice
- 12:39Ryan: Ooh, a great guess.
- 12:43Kearns: Or what is Barlow and Salem's lot have to do with Annie Wilkes.
- 12:48Now I'm wondering if this is producers and stuff.
- 12:51Ryan: Under, under control by a presence.
- 12:56'cause your country,
- 12:58no.
- 12:58Kearns: Not
- 12:59Ryan: Man,
- 12:59Kearns: your grave, right?
- 13:00She wasn't.
- 13:00And Annie Wilkes is just crazy.
- 13:02Ryan: Annie Wilkes is controlled by
- 13:04to be in
- 13:05Kearns: anti-hero at worst than a hero.
- 13:07Hero at best in, uh, castle Rock, that's the best season of Castle Rock when Annie
- 13:13Ryan: season two.
- 13:16Kearns: Salem's lots.
- 13:17Number two for me.
- 13:18By the way,
- 13:19Ryan: Oh, okay.
- 13:20Kearns: Ryan.
- 13:22Ryan: I don't think, oh, hold on.
- 13:24Jon: see
- 13:24next
- 13:25Kearns: We're rooting for you now, buddy.
- 13:27You need this?
- 13:27You're sick.
- 13:29Jon: hurt your, hurt you guys with how you just ranked Salem's lot.
- 13:35Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 13:35No.
- 13:36Why?
- 13:36How would that hurt me?
- 13:37Number one,
- 13:38Ryan: It's, it's not gonna hurt him.
- 13:40And I'll put this at number two.
- 13:42Kearns: I,
- 13:42Ryan: no, I have number two already.
- 13:43No,
- 13:46I'll do number two for In Mouth and Madness.
- 13:48That's a good movie.
- 13:48Kearns: another one though.
- 13:49Sutter Kane, Stephen King.
- 13:50Adjacent, but not really king.
- 13:52This one is eldrich.
- 13:55This is weird.
- 13:56This is, this is so different.
- 14:00Ryan: There, the, all these movies have novelists in them.
- 14:03Kearns: Yes.
- 14:03Good job, dude.
- 14:04Good job.
- 14:06Ryan: You know what Salem's Law should have been the freaking,
- 14:10that should have been the key.
- 14:11'cause he's a novelist who goes back to Jerusalem.
- 14:13Kearns: on your grave, which is so dumb of me.
- 14:17Yeah,
- 14:18Ryan: Yep.
- 14:18Kearns: that.
- 14:19I was too busy thinking about to be mores but
- 14:21Jon: All right.
- 14:21Which means I'm gonna bet that the two of you can guess what
- 14:26your number five is about to be.
- 14:30Any guesses?
- 14:31Kearns: a novelist.
- 14:32You know, maybe this is our redemption
- 14:33Jon: It's not.
- 14:34Kearns: that has a novelist.
- 14:35Oh, the
- 14:36Ryan: The Shining.
- 14:36Yeah.
- 14:37Kearns: not be number
- 14:38Ryan: Uh, that should not be number five either.
- 14:42No.
- 14:42Kearns: things with novelists in it.
- 14:44He's very on.
- 14:45Jon: too.
- 14:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 14:46He's got a ton
- 14:47Jon: with
- 14:49Kearns: bag of bones.
- 14:50Is there?
- 14:51Jon: the one with Johnny Depp.
- 14:53Kearns: Yeah,
- 14:54Ryan: yep.
- 14:55Kearns: window.
- 14:56Ryan: Dream.
- 14:56Yep.
- 14:57Secret window.
- 14:57I was gonna say Dream Catcher for some reason.
- 14:59That's a whole other movie
- 15:00Jon: completely
- 15:01different
- 15:02Kearns: And that's kind of what Dream Catcher is, to be honest with you.
- 15:04If you read it, you feel like your rear window was invaded.
- 15:07I wasn't a big fan of Dream Catcher film adaptation or the novel,
- 15:12Ryan: and it looks so good.
- 15:14Trailer wise.
- 15:14They built it up.
- 15:15Kearns: The Dome, I liked a bunch of his other stuff that got like doo McKee.
- 15:19I liked those.
- 15:20Lizzie's story I like a lot Rose Matter.
- 15:22I did not like, um,
- 15:25Ryan: Which one?
- 15:28Oh, okay.
- 15:28I thought you were saying Rosemary's Baby And got cut out and I was like, oh.
- 15:32All right.
- 15:33Kearns: Matter was so
- 15:34Ryan: Uh
- 15:34Kearns: trouble like remembering what it's about actually.
- 15:36But I've read everything Stephen King ever wrote.
- 15:38I think I, I got around to read the Colorado Kid one.
- 15:42Like he had
- 15:43Ryan: yep.
- 15:43Kearns: things.
- 15:44He came out and I was waiting.
- 15:46Ryan: Colorado kid.
- 15:46And, um, oh, the,
- 15:50one.
- 15:51Kearns: Yeah.
- 15:52Ryan: The carnival one was supposed to be excellent later, is I think
- 15:55the most interesting because it leads into the shine a little bit
- 15:58Kearns: it makes
- 15:59Ryan: to show like the shine is more, it's growing during that time.
- 16:03Kearns: own universe.
- 16:03And speaking of being in your own universe, this is kinder right here.
- 16:06It's a short story collection.
- 16:07Where is it?
- 16:07There it is.
- 16:09Short Story Collection by Martin Kerns.
- 16:10He's an amazing author.
- 16:11You should talk about him all the time at dinner with your family and friends.
- 16:15Ryan: I haven't read the third novel in the valor of the Valla series.
- 16:18I'm waiting for that.
- 16:19Um.
- 16:20Reading Kinder on and off again.
- 16:23I do like that short story collection.
- 16:25I really do.
- 16:26Kearns: I know because
- 16:26Ryan: It is,
- 16:27Kearns: Damn it.
- 16:28Ryan: yeah, that
- 16:29Kearns: Damn
- 16:30Ryan: you weren't supposed to say that
- 16:32you weren't aort
- 16:34Aort,
- 16:34Kearns: he is not a good friend, is a dark fantasy horror adjacent in the beginning,
- 16:38horror adjacent, and then really mostly
- 16:40Ryan: yes.
- 16:41Kearns: continue rolling.
- 16:43Um,
- 16:43Ryan: You got a mix of horror in there.
- 16:46Kearns: you did.
- 16:47Jon: usually the, I'm usually the last one.
- 16:50Kearns: Yeah.
- 16:51Speaking of bad
- 16:52Ryan: I've been,
- 16:53Kearns: if you're watching this, you're a good friend, Cindy.
- 16:57You're the best
- 16:58Ryan: uh,
- 16:59Kearns: reads 'em and, and curates reviews and then asks me to read them.
- 17:02I can't read your reviews.
- 17:03It's against Amazon's policy.
- 17:06Just post what you feel and she's very nice.
- 17:09But anyway, back to sinister,
- 17:12Ryan: you think,
- 17:12Kearns: after getting
- 17:13Ryan: you think Oswald.
- 17:15Kearns: that damn blind rank.
- 17:16Um, so we got Ethan Hawk, the least likable novelist ever 'cause
- 17:20he is a novelist who sold out.
- 17:22God, I can't wait.
- 17:23I would sell out in a second.
- 17:25Phantom.
- 17:26If you're still in business, give me a call.
- 17:29I'll do anything you want I'll write anything
- 17:31Ryan: he sold out the wrong reasons though.
- 17:33Like he had a job already.
- 17:35Okay.
- 17:36You don't wanna write textbooks, write the textbooks during the
- 17:38day and write your fiction, true crime at night, make some money.
- 17:43He's like, no, I just want to be an artist at,
- 17:45Kearns: He's kind of a douche.
- 17:46He's, he's,
- 17:49yeah.
- 17:49Then he's like,
- 17:50Ryan: no, he wanted to be true crime.
- 17:51Kearns: weird directions.
- 17:52Yeah.
- 17:52And then he's basically just chased the money.
- 17:54Right.
- 17:54Because he had that big hit true crime, and then he had to come up with
- 17:58his next big idea for the publisher.
- 18:00Jon: as an author, he's kind of like a method actor.
- 18:03Like he has to like live the lives of the people moving in next door and
- 18:08Ryan: Yes.
- 18:09Jon: the actual murder house.
- 18:13Kearns: That's
- 18:14Ryan: Which he.
- 18:15He didn't even tell his wife.
- 18:16He's like, yeah, we're, we're like a few house.
- 18:18We're not living in the house,
- 18:20or we're not near the crime scene.
- 18:23Jon: down from the crime scene again?
- 18:27Kearns: No
- 18:28Ryan: Oh, that reveal is, that Reveal was hilarious when he's like, nah,
- 18:33Kearns: Oh,
- 18:33Ryan: they were just hanging outside.
- 18:35Don't worry.
- 18:36Kearns: so funny because first of all, speaking of deputy, deputy,
- 18:40'cause they don't give deputy a name.
- 18:41They don't name the wife.
- 18:43The wife isn't listed.
- 18:44Um, I don't even know the actress's name 'cause she's not listed on
- 18:47the cast until you get to like 20
- 18:49Ryan: see.
- 18:50Kearns: she's Ellison's wife basically for this podcast.
- 18:53'cause we can't
- 18:54Ryan: Juliet, Juliet Rylance as Tracy Oswald and
- 18:59James Ranon as Deputy D. So and so.
- 19:04Jon: he's the star of sinister two and they don't name him.
- 19:10Kearns: is Epic.
- 19:11Jon: so and so in the second one also.
- 19:16Kearns: So
- 19:16Ryan: And James Ranon is a really, really good actor.
- 19:21He is.
- 19:21I feel like he's very underrated.
- 19:23He was Eddie in it, chapter two,
- 19:25he's maxed on the black phone and uh, he's Ziggy Sobaka in the show.
- 19:31The Wire in the second season, whether focused on the docs.
- 19:34He's done some really good roles and I feel like he doesn't get
- 19:38as much credit as he should.
- 19:40Kearns: a big film.
- 19:40He needs a breakout in a movie that makes $200 million.
- 19:43Um, I think that's,
- 19:45Ryan: Sinister two.
- 19:46Kearns: well that, that would be a bad thing to be in sinister too.
- 19:51So I think his career's probably over actually,
- 19:54Jon: Before our thoughts, do you guys want to hear some other
- 19:56people's thoughts on this movie?
- 19:59Kearns: or the fan,
- 20:00Ryan: Yeah, I'm ready.
- 20:00Kearns: enjoy hearing other people's thoughts on these movies.
- 20:05Ryan: Which, I'm curious, was there a lot of five stars for this or
- 20:08did you get a lot of one stars or?
- 20:10Jon: good mix of fives and ones.
- 20:13I don't
- 20:14Ryan: Okay
- 20:15Jon: on the fives though, to be honest.
- 20:16I want the ones, the ones or
- 20:18Ryan: there.
- 20:19Jon: The fives are, you know, the fives are like this.
- 20:22Five stars for sinister, absolutely love the movie.
- 20:28like it is really underrated or maybe people have forgotten the
- 20:31actual feel of horror and fright.
- 20:34movie really sets everything up in the most perfect way, and although it doesn't
- 20:39have many jump scares, which I would say is a good thing, still manages to
- 20:43scare a lot of, a lot of part of me.
- 20:47Kearns: Oh,
- 20:48Jon: recommend it to every horror movie lover out there.
- 20:51Again, five stars, four sinister,
- 20:54Kearns: hope those part of you really did get scared.
- 20:57Jon: of him,
- 21:00Ryan: I hope he didn't find a box of videotapes upstairs in his attic.
- 21:03'cause that would be scary.
- 21:05Jon: but as,
- 21:06Ryan: Super eight.
- 21:07Jon: always gonna hate a movie.
- 21:09Here's
- 21:10Kearns: Well before we do the One Star, like that you brought
- 21:14up the lack of jump scares.
- 21:16I feel like one of the things this movie did so well was
- 21:18Build Dread and then when there
- 21:21Ryan: Yes,
- 21:21Kearns: moments, it was like, um, even though this is a terrible scene
- 21:25to reference for this reason, that scene in signs when the alien walks
- 21:29by the camera and uh, and Joaquin Phoenix is watching it in the closet.
- 21:34That made
- 21:35Ryan: yes,
- 21:36Kearns: jump though because the buildup was done.
- 21:37So like, well, um, and it was more impactful.
- 21:41Everybody remembers that, but nobody remembers when he saw
- 21:43the thing standing on the roof.
- 21:44'cause that was a generic jump scare.
- 21:46So like this sinister does that really well, where it really, it
- 21:50earns your terror in those ways.
- 21:52Jon: the jump scares, but you gotta earn 'em.
- 21:55Like just throwing
- 21:57Ryan: yes.
- 21:57Jon: you jump is not effective horror.
- 22:00Ryan: And Siner does a good job building up that.
- 22:03Like we said earlier, that thrill, it builds up the scary elements
- 22:06where when the jump scare does happen, but I feel like mostly the
- 22:10horror is directed to a lot of the film footage that, Ellison watches.
- 22:15I feel like that's where more of the horror is.
- 22:17'cause it's that build of is it gonna happen?
- 22:20Is it not gonna happen?
- 22:22What is Mr. Boogie?
- 22:23Jon: yeah.
- 22:24Ryan: You know,
- 22:27I just love the name Mr. Boogie.
- 22:31I just see him dancing in Soul Train.
- 22:33Just
- 22:34Jon: four sinister.
- 22:36of the worst horrors I've ever seen, except I had to give up
- 22:41about halfway through as it didn't deserve any more of my time.
- 22:46Wasted time.
- 22:49Ryan: Blasphemy.
- 22:51Jon: Being
- 22:52Kearns: make it to the best part.
- 22:53Jon: he didn't.
- 22:54Being forced to
- 22:56Ryan: No.
- 22:57Jon: Hawk sifting through a seemingly never ending abundance of cliched
- 23:03found footage severing any investment.
- 23:06I hope this film could have been massively failing to live up
- 23:10to its best horror ever status.
- 23:13Honestly, on earth is so wrong with all you Easily pleased Horror junkies.
- 23:20The film is atrocious.
- 23:24I gave up when some cheesy snake wriggles out of a box thinking
- 23:29Kearns: Oh, okay.
- 23:29Jon: here.
- 23:30Amateur cheap tricks already exhausted to death and is why I
- 23:35largely quit the genre Aons ago, but fell for the bogus marketing.
- 23:41So I'm here to steer you well away.
- 23:45It's so dull and carelessly.
- 23:48Unengaging.
- 23:50Completely bored my brains out.
- 23:55Kearns: Your brains
- 23:56Ryan: This is a person
- 23:59damn straight.
- 24:00Kearns: say though, does have some credence with the cliche stuff.
- 24:03But the cliche stuff is purposely used, purposefully used, I should say.
- 24:08it's, it's well done it.
- 24:10Ethan Hawk plays a remarkably unlikable character that is the
- 24:14Ryan: Yeah,
- 24:15Kearns: this movie.
- 24:16And the movie works really well for starters.
- 24:19And also that's one of the reasons why the ending is so good.
- 24:22'cause like you're like, oh well, okay.
- 24:25But I like, I don't, I don't buy the, the whole it ruins you or takes you out thing.
- 24:31the whole time you're focused on what the hell's going on.
- 24:34Jon: I mean, listen, I don't love cliches, but they're cliches for a reason.
- 24:38Sometimes they
- 24:40Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:41This was a good use of them, I cannot deny that they are there.
- 24:45They are there and tropes.
- 24:46Lots of tropes.
- 24:49Ryan: they're there, but they're done in a way where it makes sense for the story.
- 24:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:54Ryan: Like you see it, you're like, oh, this is okay, this is cool.
- 24:57And then it gut punches you.
- 24:59And again, I, I'll go back to it.
- 25:00The footage is where it gut punches you.
- 25:03'cause you see a lot of this, oh, everyone's all happy.
- 25:06That's where the gut punch is and it's right in front of you.
- 25:09So they're, uh, Scott, uh, what's his name?
- 25:12Scott.
- 25:13Um, I want to mispronounce his name.
- 25:15Derrickson just puts it right in front of you, um, through his
- 25:19direction as well as his writing.
- 25:22And it's very easy for the audience to get comfortable or kind of get used to that
- 25:27vibe that they're in that chilling vibe.
- 25:30And it's fair, I think,
- 25:31Jon: that we reviewed that we're doing this shortly after doing black phone,
- 25:36which is sort of his evolution in horror,
- 25:41Ryan: which
- 25:42Jon: is a more complete movie, I think, than sinister.
- 25:46Ryan: yes.
- 25:47Kearns: Yeah,
- 25:48Jon: is good.
- 25:48Sinister iss really good at what it does for me.
- 25:50Sinister is not re watchable particularly because I know what's gonna happen
- 25:56Kearns: that's
- 25:57Ryan: Okay.
- 25:58Kearns: sinister.
- 25:59Jon: that what, that's
- 26:00Ryan: Yeah.
- 26:01Jon: for sinister.
- 26:01The first time you see it, for me, lit. I, you know, I went in blind.
- 26:06These things happened and it was effective.
- 26:09Watching it,
- 26:10Ryan: Well, you realize,
- 26:11Jon: you know?
- 26:14Kearns: Right.
- 26:15Ryan: yeah, I was gonna say, you were talking about his
- 26:17Blumhouse production evolution.
- 26:19Uh, Ethan Hawke plays a dick in each one of those movies.
- 26:22The Purge sinister, I mean, he's the antagonist in the black
- 26:27phone and the black phone too.
- 26:29But his evolution of becoming more of a dick evolves till he becomes the villain,
- 26:34because in the purge, he's like, well, he's the one who creates the whole system.
- 26:39And then he's like, yeah, I'm, I got no worries.
- 26:41Just tid the alarm.
- 26:42We're all good.
- 26:43And then he becomes like more into himself.
- 26:46Narcissistic, I would say
- 26:48this film.
- 26:48Sinister.
- 26:49Kearns: fun to watch a narcissist die.
- 26:52Ryan: Hey, Lex Luger.
- 26:54on The narcissist.
- 26:55Kearns: knows a few narcissists, and they suck.
- 26:58Jon: They
- 26:58Kearns: They're out there.
- 26:59They're out there
- 27:00Ryan: Yeah, they are.
- 27:02I like, I don't get it.
- 27:03You can, like I, I, I mentioned Lex Luger.
- 27:06He could have been a narcissist.
- 27:08He had the body, he had the looks.
- 27:10The titanium elbow.
- 27:11What?
- 27:12No,
- 27:12Kearns: I
- 27:13Ryan: Lex Luger.
- 27:13Kearns: I kept thinking Luther, so I was like, who the hell is he talking about?
- 27:18I
- 27:19Ryan: He is a narcissist too.
- 27:20Lex Luer too.
- 27:21I mean, anyone named Lex is a narcissist by digress.
- 27:25Kearns: Is that short for
- 27:26Ryan: um, that's a yes.
- 27:27Yeah.
- 27:27Alexander for
- 27:30if we
- 27:33l Luther.
- 27:35Kearns: But yeah, I think, the fact that we get into the movie, we don't like
- 27:39Ethan Hawke's character the entire time.
- 27:41Ellison, like Ellison, the author, or Brett Easton Ellison, maybe that's
- 27:46what they were going for there.
- 27:47His wife is struggling to like, not wanna murder him herself
- 27:50because he's such a. Dick and
- 27:53Ryan: Yep.
- 27:53Kearns: this is going on, the found footage stuff's going on and he's trying
- 27:56to piece together who killed the family?
- 27:58Well, not even necessarily, he's just investigating for the book
- 28:01and he sort of stumbles on entity that lives within the pictures and
- 28:06he sees the entity in the pictures
- 28:08Ryan: Yeah.
- 28:09Kearns: and then rolling
- 28:09Ryan: Yep.
- 28:10Kearns: plot.
- 28:10Really, that's basically what we get.
- 28:12We get a little bit of him finding out like, well, we know how the family's
- 28:16not alive themselves or each other.
- 28:18Ryan: Yep.
- 28:19Kearns: and then when he's
- 28:20Ryan: And they're, rough.
- 28:21I mean, I, I just wanna say you got like pool party 66,
- 28:26barbecue 79 1 work 86, which is.
- 28:30Yeah, that is, I knew that was gonna be the rough one when they showed that last.
- 28:35I was like, okay.
- 28:36Sleepy time 98, that one wasn't as bad.
- 28:39And family hanging out 11.
- 28:42the titles.
- 28:43The titles is what gets you like, like how they introduce you.
- 28:48Kearns: Everybody, if you don't remember.
- 28:51Ryan: Yep.
- 28:51And it, starts off with the bang with him investigating the family hanging out.
- 28:55But to go to the lawn work, like you can even just hear it.
- 28:59You don't know what to expect.
- 29:01Is it a chainsaw?
- 29:02Is it hedge clippers?
- 29:04Like, 'cause it's also the eighties.
- 29:06Like what, what are we doing here?
- 29:07And you see the push mower and the blood just go against, like, that's my fear
- 29:12Kearns: Yeah.
- 29:13Ryan: in the day.
- 29:14Like falling and, you know.
- 29:17Kearns: blended.
- 29:18Yes.
- 29:19Ryan: Yeah.
- 29:20Yes.
- 29:21Jon: that way
- 29:23Kearns: Oh yeah.
- 29:25Oh,
- 29:26Jon: out.
- 29:26She flipped it over to try to get it un like unstuck, and she got it unstuck,
- 29:30but she hadn't like shut it off and got a
- 29:36Ryan: that's why you flip it over.
- 29:39You get a stick and you just
- 29:40Kearns: turn
- 29:41Ryan: tap it a little bit.
- 29:42Jon: Or,
- 29:43Ryan: Well, yes, that too.
- 29:44Sorry, my bad.
- 29:45Jon: It gets stuck.
- 29:47You turn it off, you'll walk away.
- 29:49You have a couple drinks and you come back to it later.
- 29:53Kearns: Oh, that my, then you lose the whole hand.
- 29:57Ryan: That's
- 29:58death.
- 29:59Death mower, 5,000.
- 30:00Kearns: excavator operator named Joe Mike when I was a kid, when I was 22 or 23.
- 30:05And I was working this job where I used to dig up oil tanks and
- 30:08then I'd have to get in the oil tanks and vacuum up the old oil.
- 30:11It was a, it was the worst job, but it paid enough for me to get through college.
- 30:14So I would go this job and Joe Mike would, was the wackiest most irresponsible.
- 30:21And he had one arm from sticking his arm inside of the treads of
- 30:24one of the machines, and there was no lockout tagout or anything.
- 30:27And he ripped his arm off when the tread went.
- 30:29he has his arm at the elbow, so he pushes the, the knobs and levers with this arm.
- 30:33He is got the cigarette hanging out of his mouth, the window opened,
- 30:36and this thing, and he just, he leans over, he's got his left arm.
- 30:39So he was leaning over to get his pack of cigarettes in the machine and he.
- 30:42Pushes the lever.
- 30:43So the boom of the machine comes over and hits me knocks me into a
- 30:4922 foot hole filled with oily water.
- 30:51We're digging in this guy's yard.
- 30:53So I'm down there and I'm just like, luckily it didn't hit me in the head
- 30:55or anything, just like I took it on my shoulder and Ben back and went in.
- 30:59when I'm down there I'm like, well, now I gotta wait for this dummy
- 31:03to put the bucket down and get me.
- 31:05So I have to hold out of the teeth of the bucket and have it pull me
- 31:08back out of the hole and drop me on the ground next to the hole.
- 31:12So that's
- 31:13Ryan: You.
- 31:14Kearns: my, uh, fun story about losing fingers and arms.
- 31:17Sometimes the
- 31:18Ryan: literally worked.
- 31:19Kearns: that
- 31:20Ryan: You literally worked,
- 31:21Kearns: to lose their finger.
- 31:24Ryan: you literally worked with the one arm bandit, sir.
- 31:26Kearns: did.
- 31:26Jon: You
- 31:27Kearns: Mike did some wacky stuff.
- 31:29Jon: Those
- 31:30Ryan: One armed,
- 31:31Jon: kill
- 31:31Ryan: one
- 31:32Jon: I.
- 31:34Kearns: Well.
- 31:34I think I've got a pretty good idea.
- 31:37It's been 23 years, there's, or 20?
- 31:40No, about 20 years.
- 31:41Um, he's definitely dead.
- 31:43There's no way he's still alive.
- 31:45Jon: of recklessness
- 31:46Ryan: he comes out in a trench coat,
- 31:50Kearns: He had gray
- 31:50Ryan: trench coat,
- 31:51Kearns: in and that was a miracle.
- 31:54So there's my Joe Mike story.
- 31:55I wish there was a video tape of that Kerns going in the hole.
- 32:002004.
- 32:01Jon: could recreate it if
- 32:02Ryan: Jesus Christ.
- 32:04Kearns: thank you.
- 32:05Jon: us through three,
- 32:06Ryan: No, that's, that's a big spill, man.
- 32:08Kearns: My near death experiences on the job site are hopefully behind me now.
- 32:12Jon: hopefully.
- 32:13Ryan: Uh.
- 32:14Kearns: that one.
- 32:16one.
- 32:16Ryan: I,
- 32:17Kearns: No thanks.
- 32:19Ryan: yeah.
- 32:19Nah, I'm too old for that stuff too.
- 32:22Like, you think about it, like, I jumped down a flight of steps
- 32:26for like a college video and it's like, I, I can't do that no more.
- 32:31And I missed one of the step we were shooting.
- 32:33Um, I'll, I'll, do we war?
- 32:35Kearns: actually a film
- 32:36Ryan: No, no.
- 32:38Uh, um, it was in, um, in college we were filming a World War II video and the
- 32:43shot we had was some, a Nazi soldier was gonna get duck gunned down and the person
- 32:47who was agreed to do it, uh, jump ship, they were too afraid to take the fall.
- 32:52I said I would do it.
- 32:53We set up two mattresses, a couple mats, and I took the jump.
- 32:58Luckily I only hit my lower back in between the steps, but the
- 33:03rest of the flight was good.
- 33:04Afterwards.
- 33:05I had a cigarette and I was all good to go.
- 33:07But you, you, you're able to do that crazy shit.
- 33:11And then it's like, as you get older, you're like, Nope.
- 33:15No, not, not anymore.
- 33:16Kearns: No, you can't do it anymore.
- 33:18It's also even just working hard.
- 33:20Yes, you can't.
- 33:21Ryan: Yes.
- 33:22Kearns: just wants to watch us be in pain.
- 33:23Jon: it just hurts a whole lot more.
- 33:25You can still do it.
- 33:27Kearns: That's true.
- 33:29Ryan: Let me, let me ask you guys what was, not trying to be sick
- 33:33or anything here, but which one of the found footage was like the one
- 33:39you were like regretting to see?
- 33:41I feel like me and Ence have agreed on the lawn work.
- 33:44Um, John, what was yours?
- 33:46Like when you saw it?
- 33:46Was it the lawn work or was it like.
- 33:48Jon: I,
- 33:50Ryan: Sleepy time.
- 33:51Jon: I.
- 33:53Kearns: Really?
- 33:53Ryan: pool is rough too.
- 33:55How they drag, how they get dragged in by their necks
- 33:59Jon: it's
- 33:59Ryan: just
- 34:01Kearns: that one is also very.
- 34:03It's altered.
- 34:05They're, altered.
- 34:05You can tell that something weird is going on.
- 34:08They're not
- 34:09Ryan: Yes.
- 34:10Kearns: drowned, you know?
- 34:13Well, it's tricky.
- 34:17Ryan: yes and no.
- 34:18I feel like they get into this state, like they're like, they're zoned
- 34:24Kearns: Yeah.
- 34:25Ryan: and they're like, like, except, except for, well
- 34:30spoiler, except for Allison.
- 34:32But you know, the whole family seem like they're in their whole zone and
- 34:38they realize some of 'em are realizing what's going on and some of them are
- 34:41just kind of going with what's going on.
- 34:44It's interesting.
- 34:45Kearns: good.
- 34:46It's, that's what's the creepy aspect of it that puts this movie a few notches
- 34:50above where you, it would be otherwise those types of scenes, the way they did
- 34:54those small little bits of direction with the pool party scene and stuff.
- 34:59And you two bastards know, I don't really like the idea of like, blades lopping off
- 35:03large heaps of flesh and things like that.
- 35:05After he, he made me watch, bring her back.
- 35:09You're such jerks that movie.
- 35:11I wouldn't, Ugh.
- 35:12Jon: I didn't make you watch that.
- 35:15That was
- 35:15Kearns: true.
- 35:16Ryan did.
- 35:17did.
- 35:18Uh, that's like, he's, yeah.
- 35:20Look at how happy he is.
- 35:21You suck.
- 35:22Jon: you
- 35:22a
- 35:23Kearns: suck.
- 35:23He's.
- 35:24Jon: ignored me on that.
- 35:26I said, I said it's a good movie, but it's not something
- 35:28we could ever do for the pod.
- 35:31Kearns: Yeah, we probably won't do that for the pod.
- 35:33It's just
- 35:34Ryan: As,
- 35:35as, as a horror,
- 35:37as a,
- 35:37Jon: that.
- 35:39Ryan: as a horror movie enthusiast, you, you should at least watch it.
- 35:43And to be honest, like that being one of my favorite possession films.
- 35:47Kearns: Is it
- 35:48Ryan: Over topping the exer.
- 35:50It's, it's considered a possession film.
- 35:51Yes.
- 35:52Kearns: or is it an old
- 35:53Ryan: Yeah.
- 35:54Kearns: some voodoo
- 35:55Jon: possession film, I think.
- 35:58Kearns: Yeah, well, I
- 35:59Ryan: I mean,
- 36:01Kearns: the, knife biter.
- 36:04Ryan: give us, give us, give us a comment.
- 36:06Give us your vote.
- 36:07Give us opinion.
- 36:08If you want us to see us do, bring her back.
- 36:10Let us know.
- 36:12Everyone's been vocal.
- 36:13I mean, we got, we got, listen, we got a comment today from um, a
- 36:19gentleman who follows us, who mentioned they watched the black phone too.
- 36:22They said that was horrible, which we called it.
- 36:26Just saying on that
- 36:28Kearns: we figured it was gonna be
- 36:29Jon: didn't, when you don't have to make sequels sinister.
- 36:32Two, don't
- 36:33make
- 36:34Kearns: Yeah.
- 36:35Sinister
- 36:36Ryan: black phone two is very scarily.
- 36:40Very, and I'll say it's scarily.
- 36:41It's scarily similar to Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 36:44Jon: of
- 36:45Ryan: I haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read what they did.
- 36:49It is very nightmare on Elm Street.
- 36:51Kearns: and you're giving like a detailed
- 36:53Ryan: street.
- 36:53Kearns: or opinion without having seen it first.
- 36:56I,
- 36:57Ryan: I just saw.
- 36:58Kearns: minutes of it in the movie theater when I was watching the
- 37:00Mallard movie with my wife and kids.
- 37:02Where'd you go?
- 37:03I was just in the bathroom for a bit.
- 37:05All right.
- 37:06So, um,
- 37:07Jon: like
- 37:08Kearns: this,
- 37:09Jon: who hated this?
- 37:11Kearns: yes.
- 37:11And then we'll get to
- 37:13Ryan: I'm interested.
- 37:13Kearns: the movie.
- 37:14Jon: star.
- 37:14First sinister.
- 37:16I saw a review about the scariest movies of all time, and they put this at the top.
- 37:22The same list had Hereditary in the Top Five, which I agree with.
- 37:26Hereditary was definitely one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, so I
- 37:31assumed this would be on par with that.
- 37:34a laughable attempt at a horror movie.
- 37:38Yeah, the home movie scenes were a little disturbing, but
- 37:42everything else was predictable.
- 37:44actually shook my head and laughed a few times during
- 37:47parts I assume were to be scary.
- 37:51Sinister gets a one out of five for me.
- 37:53Don't
- 37:57Kearns: Jesus, man.
- 37:58These people are the
- 37:59Ryan: Definitely bother,
- 38:00Kearns: it.
- 38:00So it's the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life,
- 38:04and now I'm going back to bed.
- 38:07It's such a
- 38:08Ryan: but
- 38:09But these are the people.
- 38:11These are the people.
- 38:12Jon: this has to be the worst or the best I've ever seen.
- 38:16You have.
- 38:18Ryan: I can't be Okay.
- 38:19Jon: sinister,
- 38:20is the worst or the best horror movie you've ever seen, you
- 38:24need to watch a lot more horror.
- 38:28Ryan: yes.
- 38:29Jon: lot.
- 38:30Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:30I
- 38:30Ryan: Yeah.
- 38:31Yeah.
- 38:31Kearns: so I could see three.
- 38:33I could see three and a half.
- 38:34I could see four.
- 38:35I could see four and a half.
- 38:36I could even see five.
- 38:37I don't think it's a five myself, but yeah,
- 38:40Ryan: I'll do four.
- 38:40Kearns: I think
- 38:41Ryan: four
- 38:41Kearns: five,
- 38:42Ryan: four.
- 38:43Kearns: This is a solid B minus of a
- 38:45Ryan: Yep.
- 38:46Oh, no, no.
- 38:47I would give it a B.
- 38:48Kearns: an 80 is.
- 38:49An 80 is a
- 38:50Ryan: All, all, all, all right.
- 38:50Four
- 38:51Kearns: 83
- 38:52Ryan: four and a half.
- 38:52Kearns: an 86
- 38:53Ryan: and a half.
- 38:56Kearns: Yeah.
- 38:56Ryan: Fuck.
- 38:57Kearns: That's why I need the 0.2.
- 38:58Point two five matters.
- 39:00Jon: go about a three, three and a half.
- 39:01First sinister.
- 39:04Ryan: Three and a half.
- 39:05All right.
- 39:08Kearns: Every
- 39:09Ryan: Well, three and a half,
- 39:12four point 15
- 39:14Kearns: Oh
- 39:14Ryan: sets of the second square.
- 39:17Kearns: Very nice.
- 39:19nice.
- 39:19But this movie, this movie was enjoyable.
- 39:22My wife and I were, she wasn't, she hadn't passed all the tests yet at the time.
- 39:27She wasn't quite
- 39:28Ryan: You didn't do, you didn't do the door test yet, did you?
- 39:31Kearns: where you kick her out
- 39:32Ryan: Did she unlock you?
- 39:33Kearns: can find her way back in and if
- 39:35Ryan: No, it's the Bronx tail.
- 39:36Kearns: Yeah.
- 39:37Ryan: gotta have her unlock the door as you walk.
- 39:39I had a
- 39:40Kearns: It was 2012.
- 39:42I, I unlocked with
- 39:43Ryan: Oh,
- 39:44Kearns: and got in the
- 39:45Ryan: oh fuck that I've done that.
- 39:47Kearns: I were in a
- 39:48Ryan: I've done.
- 39:48Kearns: like 1145 at night after this movie.
- 39:50And, uh, the same theater I still go to actually.
- 39:53And we were sitting under a street light and we just sat in the car for a while
- 39:56and we're like, that was a scary movie.
- 39:58That was a really scary movie.
- 40:01And it was funny.
- 40:02I remember that we sat there talking about it for a long time.
- 40:05We lived together at the
- 40:06Ryan: See,
- 40:07Kearns: home together, but
- 40:08Ryan: oh, okay.
- 40:09Kearns: I
- 40:09Ryan: I was gonna say you're, you're taking your dates on horror movies.
- 40:14My dates at the time were like, what movie do you want to go see?
- 40:17Oh, I wanna go see Inception.
- 40:18Really?
- 40:19Yeah.
- 40:19Yes.
- 40:20Kearns: to do that.
- 40:21Take her to the horror movies.
- 40:22Ryan: My day, my day fell asleep on that one.
- 40:24I was like, yeah, I love this movie.
- 40:26This is great.
- 40:26Kearns: it.
- 40:26A dream.
- 40:27Ryan,
- 40:28Ryan: She was in a dream.
- 40:30I might be living in a dream world.
- 40:32I don't know.
- 40:33I woke it up.
- 40:34Kearns: I
- 40:35Ryan: I'm gonna wake up.
- 40:35It's 1995.
- 40:36Kearns: But,
- 40:37Ryan: My Game Boy's on with Pokemon Red.
- 40:39But again, getting back to, hold on.
- 40:42We're talking about sinister.
- 40:43Kearns: give him, give him
- 40:44Ryan: Yes,
- 40:45Kearns: He's,
- 40:46Ryan: we're talking about sinister.
- 40:48Kearns: Just so everybody knows.
- 40:49And he's out here.
- 40:50He's out here in these streets.
- 40:51For you people.
- 40:52Ryan: I am.
- 40:53I am.
- 40:54I, listen.
- 40:55I'm a who?
- 40:56Magnet.
- 40:57A definitely.
- 40:58Ethan Hawke.
- 40:58Not Guy Pierce.
- 40:59Not Guy.
- 41:00Pierce.
- 41:01Kearns: I,
- 41:02Ryan: What?
- 41:02I'm a horror magnet.
- 41:03Kearns: whore.
- 41:03He did say whore,
- 41:04Jon: that R at the end.
- 41:06at
- 41:06Ryan: Don't.
- 41:06Jon: important to get on there.
- 41:09Kearns: yeah.
- 41:10Ryan: So listen, how I in writing is when I say horror,
- 41:16it comes out as the other one.
- 41:19It comes out as horror, horror, horror.
- 41:22Kearns: So, all right, so finish what you were saying about the movie, so
- 41:25we can, we can talk about the end.
- 41:27Ryan: Well, that, that's what I was gonna connect to actually, um,
- 41:30with the ending, um, each of these deaths happen in a different city.
- 41:35So each time a family moves into the house, a death occurs, family moves
- 41:40in, they take the curse with them.
- 41:43So when we get to the end, um, Ellison is kind of realizing
- 41:47all the shit is going down.
- 41:49He's gotta get his family out of there.
- 41:51Um, deputy so and so basically helps him get, get, sorry.
- 41:55So and so Deputy, so and so gets him to his
- 41:59Kearns: accurate name.
- 42:01Jon: sort of a problem to me because at
- 42:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 42:05Jon: the beginning, at the beginning of the movie, you get,
- 42:07Ryan: He's like.
- 42:08Jon: as the sheriff coming out there and sort of warning Ellison a way.
- 42:13And know, it's brought, brought up that he has frequently portrayed
- 42:18police in a bad light in his books.
- 42:22And then out of nowhere here comes deputy so and so to offer help.
- 42:29I'll
- 42:30Ryan: his biggest fan.
- 42:31Jon: fan.
- 42:32Can you sign the book for me?
- 42:37Oh,
- 42:38Kearns: It's pretty quality stuff.
- 42:39It's pretty quality stuff.
- 42:42And then, yeah, and he's supposed to add a little bit of dread too.
- 42:45I think A little bit of like outside sort of influence, something to worry about.
- 42:51That's not necessarily the monster.
- 42:52He's, he serves a few functions, I suppose.
- 42:56The fact that they don't, so the movie that Super Troian has tons
- 42:59of cliches, has deputy so and so.
- 43:01I feel like that's intentional.
- 43:04Ryan: Yes, a hundred percent.
- 43:06Kearns: useless.
- 43:06We don't even name him.
- 43:07He's the, he's the cop guys.
- 43:10Jon: I mean, in the first one, he pretty useless.
- 43:15He
- 43:16Kearns: does he do to help them?
- 43:18Jon: I mean, eventually he warns him.
- 43:21Ryan: Eventually, yeah,
- 43:22Jon: here, but,
- 43:24Kearns: I mean, yeah, but that's just
- 43:25Ryan: it's like too late.
- 43:27Kearns: happening to you guys.
- 43:28You should leave.
- 43:29Jon: I'll, I'll, also say the, the other thing that that always gets
- 43:32me, pulls me out of the mood of this movie is how much evidence Ellison
- 43:37has that the police don't have.
- 43:40And instead of, instead of turning it over, he's gonna use
- 43:44it for his book and to make the
- 43:46Kearns: Well,
- 43:46Jon: bad.
- 43:48Kearns: yeah, that's like his whole
- 43:49Ryan: Yes,
- 43:50Kearns: is what, that's something a person like him would do though.
- 43:54Ryan: yes.
- 43:54Kearns: there's nothing that's made that more evident than
- 43:56the times in which we live.
- 43:57Like the people who are self profiteering over being humane
- 44:00in any way, are, uh, way more
- 44:03Ryan: Okay.
- 44:04Kearns: I thought they were when I was a much younger, more naive man.
- 44:07They just have more means now.
- 44:10Ryan: Yes, it's true.
- 44:12Kearns: get to the end of the movie, we see the culmination of his investigation.
- 44:17His wife should have left him.
- 44:19Does she actually.
- 44:21Ryan: Yep.
- 44:21Kearns: She does finally
- 44:22Ryan: No,
- 44:23Kearns: No.
- 44:24Ryan: no, no, no, no.
- 44:25She,
- 44:26he finally, he, he goes along with her and he is like, we gotta get out.
- 44:30She's like, thank God.
- 44:31Yeah, I'll do textbooks.
- 44:33Kearns: him.
- 44:34Ryan: She should have left.
- 44:34Kearns: mistake.
- 44:35And then they um, how did they end up in the attic?
- 44:38Ryan: Well, they, they don't, they, um, end up back in their old house.
- 44:43They move back in and, uh, Ellison has a nice cup of tea and, uh, there's
- 44:49green residue in it, and he gets knocked out by a possessed Ashley.
- 44:54Kearns: up again, Ashley's his kid and then knock it up again.
- 45:00That
- 45:00Ryan: Thank you.
- 45:01Sorry.
- 45:01Kearns: out for the promo.
- 45:04Jon: Just like, loop that sneeze.
- 45:08Kearns: We need to get tryptophan or what?
- 45:10No, trytophan is the stuff that's in Turkey, right?
- 45:13We need to get him some like Te Tamiflu.
- 45:15Tamiflu.
- 45:16look at him.
- 45:17Oh, this isn't good.
- 45:19This isn't
- 45:19Ryan: No, it's okay.
- 45:20Kearns: this up.
- 45:21All right.
- 45:21So the movie and before Ryan dies, how does Ethan Hawk
- 45:24Ryan: I'm on, I'm on, I'm on, I'm on DayQuil.
- 45:27If you guys are sick.
- 45:28Used DayQuil or the CVS brand?
- 45:30Kearns: 31 at night.
- 45:31Please stop taking DayQuil.
- 45:32It's just caffeine.
- 45:33It's just caffeine.
- 45:35Jon: you,
- 45:36Ryan: Damn it.
- 45:36Jon: a day cooler NyQuil sponsorship, so you don't have to call them out.
- 45:41Kearns: Yeah, it's fine.
- 45:43Ryan: Uh, well, it's, it's a CVS brand, so maybe CVS Walgreens Rite Aid,
- 45:47Kearns: we
- 45:48Ryan: not even Rite Aid.
- 45:49Rite Aid's Go on.
- 45:49Kearns: kids, what we like to do is
- 45:53we like to our NyQuil, heat it up in the microwave,
- 46:00Ryan: I like it all warm
- 46:02Kearns: the
- 46:03Ryan: by the road.
- 46:04The road.
- 46:07I'm, why am I picturing, oh, the guy,
- 46:10Kearns: Cemetery,
- 46:10Ryan: oh,
- 46:11Kearns: road.
- 46:11Ryan: that's what I'm saying.
- 46:12Fred.
- 46:12Fred, uh,
- 46:13Kearns: NyQuil, you see him.
- 46:15Ryan: damn road.
- 46:16That damn road.
- 46:17I, I'm down to see him.
- 46:18Fred Gwen, come on now.
- 46:19Kearns: So anyway, back to the movie.
- 46:21So they're at his house, he gets knocked out yet it's true.
- 46:24He is dead.
- 46:25So they get knocked out.
- 46:27Ryan: Yes.
- 46:27Not Tim Curry.
- 46:28Jon: Nope.
- 46:29Kearns: you.
- 46:29Tim Curry's alive and well, even to
- 46:32Ryan: Cardinal
- 46:32KU
- 46:32Kearns: be is just terrible.
- 46:34So they're in the house, they've been drugged by their
- 46:38child and they wake up in the,
- 46:42Ryan: living room with a roaring fire,
- 46:44Kearns: living room.
- 46:44Why
- 46:45Ryan: no
- 46:45Kearns: tell
- 46:45Ryan: living room.
- 46:46And,
- 46:47Kearns: Tell me.
- 46:48Ryan: and she comes outta nowhere with an ax and she goes, chopping, making Alice
- 46:53famous again, which is a great line.
- 46:55Kearns: well, you got there too quick.
- 46:56Didn't sinister teach you anything?
- 46:58You gotta bill
- 46:59Ryan: Oh,
- 47:00Kearns: he's, he wakes up.
- 47:02But is is it just his children with the acts in there?
- 47:04Does he see Mr. Boogaloo electric?
- 47:06Boogaloo?
- 47:08Ryan: No, Mr. Boogie, but Tracy and Trevor
- 47:10Kearns: are there.
- 47:11You, you get to connect the dots that they've been led to
- 47:14do this by their demon friend,
- 47:18Ryan: Yep.
- 47:18Kearns: Mr.
- 47:18Book.
- 47:20Ryan: And then they, Mr. Booka Boo.
- 47:24Um,
- 47:24Kearns: they kill the
- 47:25Ryan: why am I thinking of
- 47:26Kearns: how it ends.
- 47:27The acts coming down and then you're in the theater.
- 47:29Like I, I thought it was a
- 47:31Ryan: Oh, oh, oh.
- 47:32Oh.
- 47:32Don't, don't, don't forget.
- 47:34No, she fingers paints.
- 47:36She finger paints on the wall
- 47:38Kearns: Afterward with
- 47:39Ryan: blood.
- 47:40Kearns: You're
- 47:40Ryan: Yep.
- 47:41And she puts the boogoo symbol on the middle of the
- 47:45Kearns: You
- 47:46Ryan: why.
- 47:46Kearns: a, you can't start any statement with She Fingers after we
- 47:49said the movie's over and they're dead.
- 47:51Ryan says she Fingers the paint.
- 47:54Yeah, fingers paint.
- 47:58Ryan: She,
- 47:58Kearns: to get away with this because he's delirious right now.
- 48:01Jon: to get away with it
- 48:02Ryan: she, she, she paints with her finger.
- 48:05Kearns: the,
- 48:05Ryan: She paints with her Finger
- 48:07Kearns: oh my God.
- 48:09This is, I have to be able to click the Okay.
- 48:12For audiences under 18 button.
- 48:14Ryan: house.
- 48:15House painting 12.
- 48:18That's the title.
- 48:19Kearns: watch it.
- 48:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 48:21Ryan: It is.
- 48:22It's a great film.
- 48:23I'm very,
- 48:24Kearns: watching that franchise.
- 48:26Ryan: yes.
- 48:27Jon: the second one is the blatant ghost kids influence.
- 48:31They show the ghost
- 48:33whole way.
- 48:36It's not
- 48:36like a,
- 48:37Kearns: Not cool.
- 48:38Jon: It's not.
- 48:39It's
- 48:39just
- 48:40Kearns: Yeah,
- 48:41Jon: your
- 48:43Ryan: You saw that too.
- 48:44Okay.
- 48:44Kearns: is a little lint or a little cat hair.
- 48:47Ryan: I was like, he's like ghost children.
- 48:48Do you have ghost children in your house?
- 48:50Are you watching the super eight films?
- 48:52John, don't.
- 48:52Kearns: angry right now.
- 48:53Oh no.
- 48:53I forgot to turn on my backlight.
- 48:56Ryan: Oh, hold on.
- 48:58Kearns: old backlight.
- 49:01That's how we're broadcasting All right, so Ashley, fingers
- 49:04paint, and then roll credits.
- 49:06Sinister is a success.
- 49:08Ethan Hawks.
- 49:10know it's tricky to play a role like that where you're so unlikeable,
- 49:13but that makes the movie better because then your next movie, are
- 49:17Ryan: He's,
- 49:17Kearns: jerk again?
- 49:18Are you a good guy?
- 49:20is kind
- 49:20Ryan: he's got a lot of range.
- 49:22Jon: I think he's typecast in horror because when you
- 49:24think about some of the other
- 49:26Ryan: Yes.
- 49:27Jon: in, like training day.
- 49:29He's the noob.
- 49:30He
- 49:31Ryan: Mm-hmm.
- 49:32Jon: sunset, before sunrise, before whatever the other
- 49:35one is before he's just the,
- 49:38Ryan: Yep.
- 49:38Jon: interest guy.
- 49:39He is like it, he's really mostly just the dick and horror movies.
- 49:45Ryan: Yeah, he is.
- 49:46Or the antagonist.
- 49:47Kearns: a traditional leading man.
- 49:49He's never gonna be one of the Avengers.
- 49:51He couldn't be a Hawkeye, he couldn't be an action star, but he can pull
- 49:55off the action scenes in training day.
- 49:57So like, he's an
- 49:58Ryan: Yeah.
- 49:59Kearns: He's a great actor.
- 50:00He is always been a great actor.
- 50:01He is.
- 50:01Got a hell of a pedigree.
- 50:02Wasn't he a dead poet?
- 50:03Society.
- 50:04Society,
- 50:05Ryan: Yes.
- 50:06Kearns: goes back.
- 50:07Ryan: Yeah.
- 50:07Kearns: and so he, knocks him outta the park and Blumhouse
- 50:10knows what they got and mean.
- 50:11They're holding and I'm the, I'm
- 50:13Ryan: Yeah, they do.
- 50:14Kearns: was great.
- 50:15Ryan: Black phone was good.
- 50:16Um, sequel, I mean, we'll eventually cover it, but I mean, from,
- 50:23Kearns: I
- 50:23Ryan: it's 50 50.
- 50:24'cause people,
- 50:25I mean,
- 50:26Kearns: right now.
- 50:26Well, first we have to watch it.
- 50:28Ryan: people love it, but I feel like it's repeating.
- 50:32It's a repeat.
- 50:33Like we said, you're copying something that's already been done
- 50:37and giving it a new spin.
- 50:38Kearns: add the list up today?
- 50:39Jon: was done 40 years ago and people, a
- 50:43Ryan: Yep.
- 50:43Jon: are not going back and the old ones, so
- 50:48just
- 50:50Ryan: Which is disappointing.
- 50:51Jon: It's, I mean, it's hard because when you, have a generation that is TikTok and
- 50:56reels to then go back to something from the eighties that builds a little slower,
- 51:01is paced a little differently, it's hard.
- 51:06Ryan: Yeah, it's true.
- 51:08It's true.
- 51:08You gotta be, it's like black and white film.
- 51:11You have to watch it as a young age and go through that whole generation and
- 51:18that whole linear style of like film.
- 51:21I mean, I, I was introduced to black and white and color simultaneously,
- 51:26so it's like I'm used to it.
- 51:28I think black and white's better in some cases,
- 51:31Kearns: Depends.
- 51:32Jon: I had seen the Godfather multiple times by the time I was 10.
- 51:38Kearns: Wow.
- 51:39Well, you're, you're
- 51:40Ryan: That's cool.
- 51:41Kearns: people,
- 51:41Jon: Well, I mean,
- 51:42Kearns: You
- 51:43have a capacity for film.
- 51:44Jon: also worked in the film industry, so there was a lot of
- 51:49Ryan: Yeah.
- 51:49Jon: like, here's the movies I love.
- 51:51So you get to watch 'em over and over and over and over again.
- 51:55Kearns: That's cool.
- 51:56Ryan: Did you ever, this is like fun trivia question.
- 51:59Kearns: What's that?
- 52:01Ryan: I was gonna ask if he's ever seen part one and part two when
- 52:05they blended it together in 1975.
- 52:08You never seen that one?
- 52:09Jon: I, I prefer them as
- 52:11Ryan: No.
- 52:13It's so good.
- 52:14It's interesting 'cause you get the beginning of part two and then part
- 52:18one and then the final of part two.
- 52:20Jon: because the, the material they're, using is amazing, but I
- 52:25Ryan: Yes.
- 52:26Jon: movies more.
- 52:29Kearns: Yeah,
- 52:30Ryan: fair on that.
- 52:31It's like a six hour, like tro six hour film actually.
- 52:34Jon: can't sit six hours through anything.
- 52:38Kearns: The Irishman was probably the longest thing I've watched start to
- 52:40finish, and it was like on the holiday break, I think it was like Christmas
- 52:44Ryan: Yep.
- 52:44Kearns: and I remember, I remember watching it all.
- 52:47I paused it a couple times to get food and I was like, this is hard.
- 52:51was really good too.
- 52:52It was like, ugh.
- 52:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 52:55Kearns: Then that
- 52:56Ryan: Just too long.
- 52:57Kearns: was like, guess what?
- 52:57You haven't moved and now we have blood clots.
- 52:59You better get outta here.
- 53:01All right guys, so that's sin.
- 53:04do one last review
- 53:04Jon: who hated it?
- 53:07Kearns: for somebody
- 53:07Ryan: Yeah, sure.
- 53:08Let's do.
- 53:09Kearns: these idiots more.
- 53:10Jon: have hate left
- 53:11guys, you know
- 53:12Kearns: Nice.
- 53:12And then we'll do our two top fives.
- 53:14Let's get to it.
- 53:16Let.
- 53:17Jon: watched this show during a sleepover.
- 53:21recommend watching if you're interested in jump scares.
- 53:24Since the movie is mainly focused on Triller storytelling, this movie
- 53:30was as close to a bedtime story.
- 53:34It was more effective at making me sleep than my history teacher's lessons.
- 53:42Kearns: You might need to get back to paying attention in class there, scooter.
- 53:46Ryan: Yeah,
- 53:46Jon: and say, this is the exact generation we were just talking about.
- 53:50That,
- 53:51Ryan: I agree.
- 53:52Jon: spans.
- 53:53You need action, little bit of development action, bit action.
- 54:00And that's, you know,
- 54:02Ryan: This,
- 54:03Jon: where we are.
- 54:05Ryan: I disagree.
- 54:06Kearns: no, it's the, that's why I call them tiktoks 'cause they can't keep their
- 54:10attention on anything that doesn't have
- 54:12Ryan: These talkers.
- 54:13Kearns: to it.
- 54:14we were forced to like sit and endure moments of quiet and
- 54:18inactivity and things like that.
- 54:20And we
- 54:21Ryan: Yep.
- 54:21Kearns: void with things like our imaginations.
- 54:23And I'm not saying this to make Gen Z feel bad, obviously we're not nearly
- 54:26as good at that as our counterparts.
- 54:29It's just that the boomers are so evil and they're destroying the world that we don't
- 54:32talk about that superpower of theirs.
- 54:34But, and if there's any listening, um, I don't feel bad about saying that.
- 54:38Fix your friends.
- 54:39Fix your friends.
- 54:40It's a problem.
- 54:41Ryan: It's true.
- 54:42Kearns: so,
- 54:43Jon: I mean, it, it is what it is.
- 54:44Every generation is a product of the generation.
- 54:47Before it.
- 54:48If
- 54:48you you don't like how this generation of kids is acting, look
- 54:52in the mirror, you raise them.
- 54:55Kearns: Or didn't.
- 54:56I think that's part of it.
- 54:57They're tablet kids.
- 54:58Yeah.
- 54:59My kids get way too much screen time, but we, we still, like, they're still running
- 55:02around the house breaking stuff all day.
- 55:05Jon: But
- 55:06Ryan: I feel like US millennials have that.
- 55:10Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:10That's what I
- 55:11Ryan: Yeah.
- 55:11Kearns: me crazy and it would be easier to just let them be on Minecraft all
- 55:14day, but it's like, you can't do that.
- 55:16Ryan: No.
- 55:16Kearns: watch, I try to get them to watch the Goonies and granted
- 55:19four and six at the time, just didn't have, they didn't have the
- 55:24bandwidth for that type of film yet.
- 55:26And I was like, okay.
- 55:29Ryan: You gotta, you gotta show him Batman, 1989.
- 55:32Just put it right in there.
- 55:33Kearns: might actually scare Charlie too much.
- 55:36My, my
- 55:37Ryan: All right.
- 55:38Try not to scare him.
- 55:40Kearns: I, how about Edward Scissor hands?
- 55:42give him
- 55:43Ryan: No, that freaked me.
- 55:44No, that freaked me out as a kid.
- 55:45Kearns: it way too young.
- 55:46Like childs play.
- 55:47Watch that as like a five-year-old.
- 55:49Jon: you guys watched Edward Scissorhands too young.
- 55:52I was
- 55:53Kearns: Yeah.
- 55:53You were like perfect.
- 55:55Ryan: Yeah,
- 55:55Kearns: I was gonna say that's a date
- 55:57Ryan: It
- 55:58it's a great movie.
- 55:59It's just when Winona Ry, I mean that, yeah, that, that, yeah.
- 56:03That got me
- 56:04Kearns: When he spices her.
- 56:06We're gonna say spices.
- 56:08Ryan: he slice, slice and dice
- 56:10Kearns: All right,
- 56:11Ryan: spicy.
- 56:12Kearns: Sinisters.
- 56:12Good movie.
- 56:13You one star people are dumb.
- 56:14I'd say four is solid if you're doing outta the
- 56:17Ryan: Four star
- 56:18Kearns: 8.5.
- 56:19If you want to be super nice.
- 56:20I don't know if it gets there because of how
- 56:22Ryan: 0.5.
- 56:23Kearns: but
- 56:23Jon: Yeah, it's, it's
- 56:24a
- 56:25Kearns: anything from seven to eight.
- 56:26Yeah,
- 56:28so
- 56:28Ryan: I'll give a four.
- 56:31Kearns: I
- 56:32Ryan: I'll give a four.
- 56:33Kearns: coming out at the time, I think is what really kind
- 56:35of propelled it even further.
- 56:36It was a nice breath of fresh air.
- 56:39Ryan: Yes.
- 56:40Kearns: and we enjoy surprises in this business, my friend.
- 56:44Ryan: Yes, we do.
- 56:45Kearns: is very sick.
- 56:45He is gonna
- 56:46Ryan: Well,
- 56:46Kearns: very quickly tonight.
- 56:47Everybody
- 56:48Ryan: I am, but uh, John might have some statements because this is a part two.
- 56:53This is one was enough.
- 56:55Part two?
- 56:56Yes.
- 56:57This is part two in their weekly series of one was enough.
- 57:01And I'm gonna start it and I'm gonna get John all giddy and stuff.
- 57:05I'm gonna start with the descent.
- 57:07Number five.
- 57:08One was enough and I, you know, 'cause John watched the descent.
- 57:12He watched the descent too.
- 57:13And I've seen these two movies when they first aired, um, back in 2005 and
- 57:19I think the second one aired 2007, 2008,
- 57:22Kearns: something like that.
- 57:24Ryan: 2009.
- 57:25Okay.
- 57:26So the first film, you know, real quick plot file six women who enter an uncharted
- 57:32keve system and struggled to survive against the monstrous creatures inside.
- 57:36you just need a one film, how it ends, spoiler, she makes that alive.
- 57:42She's really not a good person, but through all the torture she goes through,
- 57:47Jon: She's, she's a tormented person.
- 57:49I don't blame her for any of the stuff that happens with
- 57:51Juno, because by the time she,
- 57:54Ryan: you know, okay.
- 57:55Jon: Juno, Juno has already slept with her husband and,
- 58:02Kearns: That is a no no.
- 58:04Jon: to the ending of her friend.
- 58:10Ryan: Yeah.
- 58:11Okay.
- 58:11Kearns: Yeah,
- 58:12Ryan: That's, I, I accept it.
- 58:14I accept it.
- 58:14Jon: survivor.
- 58:17Kearns: yeah.
- 58:18Well, that's like the whole thing.
- 58:20That's what.
- 58:20Well, let's not get crazy.
- 58:22I want this top five to last less than 10 years.
- 58:25So what's your fourth movie, buddy?
- 58:27Ryan: Fourth one, it's a little weird, so I prefer the sequel more, but we didn't
- 58:35need another one was paranormal activity.
- 58:37Kearns: I fair.
- 58:38Jon: or
- 58:38Ryan: I,
- 58:40so this is where I,
- 58:42Kearns: Baby's turn too, and I was like, how
- 58:44Ryan: yes, it did
- 58:46the, the second one?
- 58:47Kearns: for this attempt.
- 58:49Ryan: No, the second one was peak.
- 58:52The first one kind of gets you, and the second one really hits you.
- 58:54If the second one was the first film.
- 58:56They could have just done it there, called it a day.
- 58:59But the first is just you build it up, you get the shocking scene at the end,
- 59:04and it works for the sequel, but we don't need anymore after the first one.
- 59:09You made your point.
- 59:10We thought it was real, which
- 59:12Kearns: It's.
- 59:12Ryan: goes to my number three.
- 59:14I, my, my ex forced me to watch it.
- 59:17And her parents were away and we were in, like, their house was huge.
- 59:23They're, they were rich, their house was huge.
- 59:25And she was like, we're gonna watch this film.
- 59:27And I was like, all right.
- 59:28And she's like, all right, I'm going to bed.
- 59:30I'm like, all right, I'll be up a little bit.
- 59:31She's like, no, you're, you're coming to the room.
- 59:34I'm not, we're not playing this game.
- 59:35I'm like, you're really afraid of this movie.
- 59:40It's obviously, it's obviously fake.
- 59:42Kearns: want you in there?
- 59:42'cause now you're just gonna stand up and stare at her while she sleeps,
- 59:46is
- 59:46Ryan: That's ex. That's exactly what I did.
- 59:49And she, I got kicked out of the room
- 59:52Kearns: That's terrifying.
- 59:53Ryan: sure, making sure I don't escape, which, well, number three
- 59:58is gonna be a shocker for you guys.
- 1:00:00It's a shocker for me, but one was enough is Puppet Master.
- 1:00:05Kearns: Nice.
- 1:00:06Ryan: I, listen, I love Puppet Master.
- 1:00:08Kearns: because they, it did get
- 1:00:10Jon: I can definitely get behind this.
- 1:00:12This concept, I just can't believe whose mouth that's coming out of.
- 1:00:16Kearns: It's true.
- 1:00:17Ryan
- 1:00:17Ryan: yeah, but I, I, I do love the franchise, but if we're going from
- 1:00:22a film perspective, one was enough.
- 1:00:25The third one, I do love the third one, but if you watch each
- 1:00:28movie, everything gets changed.
- 1:00:31They change LAN's story.
- 1:00:33He
- 1:00:33was alive, Tulon was alive before World War ii, then he died during World
- 1:00:39War ii, but he was alive after war.
- 1:00:40It's, it's all over the place.
- 1:00:42And it's like.
- 1:00:43Kearns: Together.
- 1:00:45Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:00:46It's just I, the first one was enough and it also connects with
- 1:00:49the next one, children of the corn,
- 1:00:51Kearns: Oh, that one
- 1:00:52Ryan: number two.
- 1:00:55And you wanna talk about Jen?
- 1:00:56The,
- 1:00:57the, the remake Malachi,
- 1:01:01those who've walked behind the,
- 1:01:03Kearns: so dumb.
- 1:01:05Ryan: the
- 1:01:05Kearns: of a bunch of freaking farm kids, not even just farm
- 1:01:08kids, but like a bunch of kids with Reapers is terrifying and that.
- 1:01:12Ryan: Yes.
- 1:01:12Kearns: Like the youth we were just talking about not understanding or like
- 1:01:16our differences with other generations.
- 1:01:18That's been a fear forever.
- 1:01:21Hey,
- 1:01:21Ryan: they tried to remake it.
- 1:01:23They tried remaking it for this generation and it didn't work.
- 1:01:26Kearns: movie
- 1:01:27Ryan: And they,
- 1:01:28Kearns: I don't think again.
- 1:01:29Ryan: I was excited for it.
- 1:01:30I thought, okay, this, they're trying it.
- 1:01:32They made, uh, Malachi into a female antagonist, um, more possessed.
- 1:01:38I was like, okay, we're doing a little different here.
- 1:01:40Cool.
- 1:01:41And it just dropped.
- 1:01:43Very much like this one.
- 1:01:45My number one, my number one movie.
- 1:01:50We didn't eat another one.
- 1:01:52No, we're not, we're not touching Jaws.
- 1:01:55No, I'm not, I'm not feeling froggy for this one.
- 1:01:58That'll be part three, but it's final destination.
- 1:02:02I like the second one.
- 1:02:05I liked the second one,
- 1:02:07think.
- 1:02:08Well, I didn't like the first one either.
- 1:02:09I, I avoided planes for a while after that and
- 1:02:13alleyways,
- 1:02:14Kearns: even
- 1:02:15Ryan: know, but,
- 1:02:15Kearns: and um, urban legend and stuff, that was a tired movie model of just
- 1:02:20continuously pumping out different crap.
- 1:02:23But anyway, that could have been,
- 1:02:25Ryan: well,
- 1:02:25Kearns: and done.
- 1:02:26Jon: Yeah.
- 1:02:27Ryan: it was pretty good.
- 1:02:28It was, ridden by Jeffrey Reddick originally was supposed to be an
- 1:02:31X-Files episode, but it got pushed off.
- 1:02:35And ironically, a coworker I did work with, Before I joined you guys, he
- 1:02:41was a screenwriter and, he knew I, Jeffrey Reddick, who actually wrote the
- 1:02:46screenplay part of the screenplay, and they were both in, um, they were trying
- 1:02:52to get, who did the, I'm trying to get the name of the studio, new Line Cinema.
- 1:02:57They had two scripts with New line cinema.
- 1:03:00One was Final Destination known as another title, and it was,
- 1:03:04uh, my coworkers, uh, it was like an ambulance drama action script
- 1:03:09and final destination.
- 1:03:12Basically got the pool by this much because they were
- 1:03:16against final destination.
- 1:03:17They were like, this is a stupid concept.
- 1:03:19We'll go with the ambulance one.
- 1:03:21And then one person walked in and said, final Destination's the way to go.
- 1:03:24So it's a little cool story, um, from an old coworker, but again, I
- 1:03:32death takes the lives of everyone.
- 1:03:34We have a scene in the sequel that locks are flying everywhere.
- 1:03:39Makes me not wanna drive on the, you know, on any highway in the
- 1:03:43morning, night or afternoon.
- 1:03:44But again, one was enough.
- 1:03:48I'm so happy.
- 1:03:49John is not a, like, angry at my list this week.
- 1:03:52Jon: I don't have a lot to argue with there.
- 1:03:54I could do without most of the final destination movies, if not all of them.
- 1:03:58Ryan: I, the first, one is unique for what it is.
- 1:04:02The second one is basically a remake of the first one.
- 1:04:07Jon: I
- 1:04:08Ryan: Just more money?
- 1:04:09Jon: think the allure of the final destination movies is simply the,
- 1:04:12the ways they get rid of characters.
- 1:04:17Ryan: Yes.
- 1:04:18Yes.
- 1:04:18No tanning beds for me
- 1:04:21Jon: All right.
- 1:04:22Ryan: or rollercoasters, but What's your list, buddy?
- 1:04:25Jon: you got one of my lists already as the blind rank.
- 1:04:29'cause I, I wanted to do novelists authors in, in horror movies,
- 1:04:34but I wanted it to be a little,
- 1:04:36Ryan: Okay.
- 1:04:37Jon: movies than that head.
- 1:04:38So instead I went with demons.
- 1:04:42Ryan: Alright.
- 1:04:43Kearns: I like this.
- 1:04:44Jon: So,
- 1:04:45Kearns: Also.
- 1:04:46Ryan: Knight.
- 1:04:46Kearns: for Ryan's sake.
- 1:04:47Jon: number five, John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness.
- 1:04:53Kearns: It's an often overlooked carpenter property right there.
- 1:04:58Ryan: Yes it is.
- 1:04:59And Donald
- 1:05:01isn't it?
- 1:05:01It's so good.
- 1:05:02Jon: Alice Cooper cameo.
- 1:05:04Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:05:06Jon: so it, I mean the, the description sort of sounds
- 1:05:09like the beginning of a joke.
- 1:05:10A priest and some physics students investigate a mysterious green liquid
- 1:05:15in the basement of an abandoned church.
- 1:05:18The liquid contains the essence of Satan, and even worse, Satan
- 1:05:22wants to release his father, the
- 1:05:25Kearns: It's
- 1:05:25Ryan: I forgot he was called the anti-God.
- 1:05:28Kearns: I guess, I guess they got tired of saying Satan,
- 1:05:31is
- 1:05:32Ryan: Who was it?
- 1:05:32Junk
- 1:05:32Kearns: means anti-God
- 1:05:34or the
- 1:05:35Ryan: was Junk Carpenter and Deborah.
- 1:05:40She wrote Deborah Hill, wrote it.
- 1:05:41Yep.
- 1:05:41I was gonna say
- 1:05:42Kearns: no more of the Satan.
- 1:05:43Number four.
- 1:05:45Ryan: anti-God.
- 1:05:46Jon: that's coming up on our calendar.
- 1:05:50Baskin.
- 1:05:53Kearns: Oh, cool.
- 1:05:53I was curious about that.
- 1:05:55Jon: So.
- 1:05:56Kearns: looked at the list today.
- 1:05:58Jon: Turkish police officers responding to a strange call,
- 1:06:02stumble upon a door to hell and
- 1:06:04a
- 1:06:05Kearns: I did see Baskin.
- 1:06:06Jon: abandoned building.
- 1:06:08It's this one of the creepier, more unsettling movies
- 1:06:11I've seen in a long time.
- 1:06:13one little bit.
- 1:06:17Ryan: Wait, we're gonna be able to talk about basking, but not bring her back.
- 1:06:20Come on now.
- 1:06:21Kearns: well, well body horror.
- 1:06:23Compare the two body horror wise.
- 1:06:25Which one is worse?
- 1:06:28Ryan: Um, a knife
- 1:06:29in the mouth.
- 1:06:31Kearns: it.
- 1:06:31Bring her back's Way worse than Baskin.
- 1:06:33Jon: is way, way worse.
- 1:06:36Kearns: Bring her back.
- 1:06:37You're
- 1:06:37Ryan: Am.
- 1:06:37Kearns: dick.
- 1:06:38I don't like body horror.
- 1:06:40I don't like body horror.
- 1:06:41I, not that I'm squeamish either, but this one was such a rough watch.
- 1:06:46Ryan: I knew that, I knew the tabletop scene would get you.
- 1:06:49That's why I didn't tell you.
- 1:06:50I warned you about the knife scene.
- 1:06:52At least
- 1:06:52Kearns: as I was watching it and I, I was
- 1:06:55Ryan: I warned you about the knife scene.
- 1:06:57Kearns: you Ryan was laughing his ass off.
- 1:07:00Ryan: That's why I wrote back to you quickly.
- 1:07:02Jon: scene, but not the one that was really gonna mess him up
- 1:07:06Kearns: There was like four.
- 1:07:08Ryan: the knife scene was the worst for me.
- 1:07:10Sorry.
- 1:07:10Not, not the, it was the piss scene, wasn't it?
- 1:07:15Kearns: there's like five,
- 1:07:16Jon: the
- 1:07:16Kearns: there's like five of,
- 1:07:17Jon: in bring her back.
- 1:07:18That got me way more than the body stuff.
- 1:07:22Ryan: Yes.
- 1:07:22Kearns: that
- 1:07:23Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:07:23Kearns: like that part, like that part if they had done that instead, but I think at
- 1:07:28Ryan: You can't,
- 1:07:28Kearns: this movie, they could have done this without being so over the
- 1:07:31top with this, this, this, and this.
- 1:07:33And it would've been a good movie too.
- 1:07:35Anyway, moving on.
- 1:07:36Jon: Number
- 1:07:37Kearns: think that's like, was a, um, what's the studio?
- 1:07:41Ryan: 8 24.
- 1:07:42Kearns: is, I'm done with them for a while, for that.
- 1:07:46All right, John.
- 1:07:46Sorry.
- 1:07:47Number three.
- 1:07:47Jon: three.
- 1:07:48Uh, we go to a movie with the Queen Lan Quigley.
- 1:07:53It's Night of the Demons.
- 1:07:56Kearns: Love it.
- 1:07:57Ryan: Yes, of course.
- 1:07:58Jon: partying on partying on Halloween night in abandoned funeral
- 1:08:01home, unintentionally summoned demon that possesses Angela before
- 1:08:07setting upon the rest of the teens.
- 1:08:10And it one of the more notable things the night of the demons the black guy lives.
- 1:08:16Kearns: Yeah,
- 1:08:17Ryan: He runs.
- 1:08:18Kearns: well, he
- 1:08:19Ryan: He runs,
- 1:08:20Kearns: He makes it through the whole movie and he gets
- 1:08:22over the wall, doesn't he?
- 1:08:24Part
- 1:08:25Ryan: he leaves her behind.
- 1:08:26Kearns: that the one?
- 1:08:27So that's the one I always get confused with.
- 1:08:29Um, fright Night.
- 1:08:31When I was a kid, I always thought they were the same movie.
- 1:08:33Like I thought Fright Night was Night of the Demons.
- 1:08:34Night of the Demons has end with the Apple.
- 1:08:39Ryan: Yes.
- 1:08:39Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:08:40Ryan: Uh, yes.
- 1:08:41Kearns: That's a cool ending
- 1:08:43Ryan: I think about that one.
- 1:08:44Kearns: old man.
- 1:08:45Ryan: You just put Jerry Dandrich in my mind, eating an apple.
- 1:08:49That movie's gotta come up though.
- 1:08:51Neither of the demons on on our list.
- 1:08:53Eventually, we've mentioned it too many times.
- 1:08:55Kearns: for me in many ways,
- 1:08:58Ryan: Wow.
- 1:08:58Kearns: ways.
- 1:09:00Ryan: Told you I got yelled at by my father for touching that video
- 1:09:04Kearns: What else do you
- 1:09:05Ryan: for,
- 1:09:06Kearns: bed, Ryan?
- 1:09:07Jon: not the only thing about that movie.
- 1:09:08I want to touch.
- 1:09:11Kearns: It's funny, your audio cut off just at that exact time.
- 1:09:14It's probably YouTube mods ahead of time.
- 1:09:17It says,
- 1:09:17Ryan: they were like, we know where this is going.
- 1:09:20Kearns: All right, let's get to number two.
- 1:09:21Jon: two,
- 1:09:23no no description required.
- 1:09:26It's The Exorcist
- 1:09:29Kearns: Yeah, it's beautiful.
- 1:09:31Jon: it
- 1:09:31Kearns: Name that demon, which that demon's name
- 1:09:35Jon: zuzu
- 1:09:36Kearns: was Mr.
- 1:09:37Ryan: Pazuzu
- 1:09:38Kearns: Pazuzu.
- 1:09:40Ryan: Mr. Boogie.
- 1:09:42Kearns: Okay.
- 1:09:42Jon: doesn't
- 1:09:42sound
- 1:09:43Kearns: I mean, the Exorcist is so good.
- 1:09:45Jon: mean, the only reason The Exorcist,
- 1:09:48Ryan: That is,
- 1:09:49Jon: isn't, number one is, um, everybody knows The Exorcist.
- 1:09:53You don't need me to hype The Exorcist.
- 1:09:56know what it is, you know, it's one of the best, not just one of the best
- 1:10:00horror movies ever made, but probably one of the best movies ever made.
- 1:10:05It does
- 1:10:07Ryan: Yes.
- 1:10:07Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:10:07Jon: doesn't need attention, but my number one should get more attention, and my
- 1:10:12number one is Late Night with the Devil.
- 1:10:16Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:10:16Ryan: Yes.
- 1:10:17Preach.
- 1:10:18That's a, I've seen that movie multiple times.
- 1:10:22It's so good.
- 1:10:23Jon: Delroy host of a nightly talk show called Night Owls attempts to
- 1:10:27revive his sagging ratings with a scary show, including a possessed girl.
- 1:10:34Things
- 1:10:35Ryan: It's so good.
- 1:10:37Jon: David,
- 1:10:38Kearns: We'll around this later.
- 1:10:39Jon: right.
- 1:10:39I, but I tried to listen to it all day and I, I don't think I have it.
- 1:10:43David Des Malian is
- 1:10:46Kearns: That's
- 1:10:46Jon: as
- 1:10:47Ryan: Yeah, that's perfect.
- 1:10:49Yes, he is.
- 1:10:51That's another actor who's very underrated, who's done small
- 1:10:54like roles like to be real.
- 1:10:58Kearns: guys.
- 1:11:00FAI has also got a weird face.
- 1:11:02Ryan: Yeah, he does.
- 1:11:03I mean, yeah, he does.
- 1:11:06But I mean, he's, he's really, he really came out with, uh, his roles
- 1:11:10in Antman, the two Ant Mans and his little appearance in the dark
- 1:11:15night, his like TV show appearances.
- 1:11:18I'm happy he finally got a good role, if
- 1:11:21Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:11:21Ryan: makes sense.
- 1:11:22Some he can show his, his acting techniques and stuff,
- 1:11:26and he does a phenomenal job.
- 1:11:28I mean, I've, like I said, I've seen this movie a few times.
- 1:11:31I've also seen it.
- 1:11:33When I was sick last year, I was up at four o'clock in the morning watching it.
- 1:11:38'cause I was just like, I so good.
- 1:11:41Jon: There's a beautiful steel book edition to that that I got.
- 1:11:45Um,
- 1:11:47Kearns: I
- 1:11:47Ryan: That is beautiful.
- 1:11:48Kearns: We need to get Brian to bed.
- 1:11:49Everybody
- 1:11:50Jon: one Other steel book you should, guys should go look for on Amazon.
- 1:11:54It's an Amazon exclusive, is the Stir Echoes s Steel
- 1:11:58book with a lenticular cover.
- 1:12:00It's so,
- 1:12:02Ryan: that's cool.
- 1:12:02Jon: and
- 1:12:03Kearns: talk dirty to me.
- 1:12:04Use big words like lenticular.
- 1:12:07Well, stir of Echo is a great movie, un underrated movie.
- 1:12:10'cause of the time period.
- 1:12:11It came out like sort of the stars that are in it.
- 1:12:14It doesn't feel like a horror movie,
- 1:12:16Jon: it
- 1:12:16Kearns: but it is.
- 1:12:17Jon: year as sixth Sense too, so it lost some of
- 1:12:21Ryan: Yep.
- 1:12:22Jon: But
- 1:12:23Kearns: arguably on par
- 1:12:27Ryan: Yes.
- 1:12:27Kearns: the twisty twist.
- 1:12:28Jon: par.
- 1:12:30Ryan: What a twist.
- 1:12:30Kearns: Nice John.
- 1:12:31Well that means that it's right.
- 1:12:32That's the correct take then, because John's opinion is law on Xenomania.
- 1:12:37Jon: on par with Sixth Sense.
- 1:12:39Kearns: But if you'd like to argue with John, join our page.
- 1:12:42Yeah, no Stir of Echo is a fantastic movie.
- 1:12:44Um, and probably gonna be on
- 1:12:46Ryan: Yes.
- 1:12:47Kearns: point in 2026, but I digress guys.
- 1:12:50Ryan: Yes.
- 1:12:50Kearns: for you tonight.
- 1:12:51So Ryan can live.
- 1:12:52We're gonna go, but thank you.
- 1:12:54Ryan: Have a good one.
- 1:12:55Kearns: There's no sinister too.
- 1:12:58Ryan: No.
- 1:12:59No.
- 1:13:01Kearns: We don't leave until you say it, John.
- 1:13:03Jon: ya.
- 1:13:03Kearns: no, I don't think so.
- 1:13:05Jon: See ya.
- 1:13:06See ya.
