- 1:24Speaker 3: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:29Speaker 3: moved west with young America. And the story of a
- 1:32Speaker 3: man who moved with it. I'm that man. Matt Dillon,
- 1:36Speaker 3: United States Marshal. The first man they look for and
- 1:40Speaker 3: the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And it makes a man watchful.
- 1:46Speaker 2: And a little lonely.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Hi, Matt.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Sam said you were waiting to see me.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I thought maybe I could buy you a beer, Kitty.
- 2:12Speaker 6: Well, on a hot day like this, that'll go pretty good.
- 2:14Speaker 5: You sit still, Matt.
- 2:15Speaker 4: I'll get it. All right.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Where's Chester? Oh, he's hanging around down at Moss Grimmocks.
- 2:23Speaker 5: I brought a pitcher full for you, just in case.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Oh, thank you.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Hi. Dog days, Matt.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's days like this I wish I was back in
- 2:34Speaker 1: Kansas City.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Just as bad there.
- 2:37Speaker 6: Well, at least there's something happening to keep your mind
- 2:40Speaker 6: off it.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Mr.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Dillon, quick, come here.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Well, what is it, Chester? There's an elephant out here
- 2:46Speaker 4: in the street.
- 2:47Speaker 7: Oh. Oh.
- 2:48Speaker 4: All right, Chester. An elephant right here on the plaza.
- 2:51Speaker 5: I could use an elephant in the street today, man.
- 2:53Speaker 7: You already did, Mr. Lund.
- 2:54Speaker 2: Doing tricks and everything. Chester, will you get in out
- 2:57Speaker 2: of the sun?
- 2:58Speaker 5: He's gone.
- 3:00Speaker 4: You know, Chester sees things even on a good day.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Oh, hey, Matt.
- 3:07Speaker 7: You in here?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Yeah, Doc. I'm in here.
- 3:11Speaker 8: That sun's so bright out there.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I can hardly see you, Matt.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Well, I'm in here, Doc.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Now, what do you want?
- 3:16Speaker 3: Well.
- 3:17Speaker 8: I thought as Marsha around here, you'd be interested in
- 3:20Speaker 8: knowing that there's an elephant out in the street.
- 3:23Speaker 4: Yeah, so I hear.
- 3:25Speaker 5: But it's true, Matt. It's really true. Well, I can't
- 3:28Speaker 5: stand it any longer.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Neither can I, Kenny. All right, Doc. What's it really
- 3:33Speaker 2: all about? You'll see, Matt.
- 3:35Speaker 6: You'll see.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Oh. Well, I'll be... By golly, you're right, Doc. There
- 3:43Speaker 4: is an elephant out here.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 3: He's advertising the circus.
- 3:47Speaker 7: See him, Mr. Dillon?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Right over there.
- 3:49Speaker 7: See him? See him?
- 3:50Speaker 4: See him there?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yes, I see him.
- 3:52Speaker 5: I can't hardly wait, Mr.
- 3:53Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 3:53Speaker 9: That man with Jenny there is giving me this handbill.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Jenny? Yeah, that's the elephant, Jenny.
- 3:58Speaker 7: Oh.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Here, let me see the handbill.
- 3:59Speaker 5: Oh.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Bannock's Grand International Circus and Menagerie. Bannock?
- 4:08Speaker 9: The show's going to be here tomorrow, Mr.
- 4:09Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 4:10Speaker 5: Two o'clock.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I'll be back in a minute. Yeah, but, Mr.
- 4:13Speaker 5: Dillon, we.
- 4:14Speaker 8: What's the matter with him, Mr.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Dillon? Hey, mister. I'd like to talk to you.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Me?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Uh-huh. Oh, of course.
- 4:24Speaker 7: Hello.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Well, Jenny, salute the marshal. Trunk up.
- 4:31Speaker 9: That's the girl.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Ah, that's very fine. Very good. I'm Jim Conger, Marshal.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Maybe you heard of me.
- 4:39Speaker 9: I used to be billed as a human fly. I
- 4:41Speaker 9: could fly anything, anywhere. But I got too old for it.
- 4:46Speaker 9: Now I'm the best bull, man, there is.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Mr.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Conger, are you with the Bannock Show? Yes, sir. Are
- 4:53Speaker 2: you planning to play here in Dodge?
- 4:55Speaker 9: Yep, tomorrow. 3 to 10, show at 2. Of course,
- 4:58Speaker 9: there are no tickets needed for the loss.
- 5:01Speaker 2: You have to have a permit to play in Dodge,
- 5:03Speaker 2: you know. We know that, Marshal.
- 5:05Speaker 9: You wasn't in your office when I came looking for one.
- 5:08Speaker 7: Mr.
- 5:09Speaker 4: Conger, I'm responsible for the peace in Dodge City, and
- 5:11Speaker 4: I'm not going to sign a permit for this circus.
- 5:14Speaker 2: To play here. Well, why is that, Marshal? You know
- 5:17Speaker 2: as well as I do why.
- 5:19Speaker 4: For what happened in Hayes City and a few other
- 5:22Speaker 4: towns where that show is played.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I don't want any riots here in Dodge. Oh, you
- 5:27Speaker 2: know about them things? Two people were killed in Hays,
- 5:31Speaker 2: weren't they?
- 5:31Speaker 10: Well, I reckon so, but, Marshal, that don't say it
- 5:34Speaker 10: happened here.
- 5:35Speaker 2: I can't take that chance.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Now, you go on back to your boss and you
- 5:39Speaker 4: tell him that I won't let you play dodge.
- 5:41Speaker 9: Oh, I can't do that, Marshal.
- 5:44Speaker 4: Why not?
- 5:45Speaker 2: She wouldn't listen to me. She's a strong woman.
- 5:49Speaker 7: She? Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Maggie Bannock.
- 5:52Speaker 5: She's my wife, Maggie is.
- 5:54Speaker 9: She used to be known as Dainty Margarita, the strongest
- 5:57Speaker 9: woman in the world. Well, Marshal, she could lift five
- 6:01Speaker 9: men at one time when she was younger.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Look, Mr.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Conger.
- 6:05Speaker 9: I'd rather not have to tell her what you said.
- 6:09Speaker 2: All right, Mr.
- 6:10Speaker 4: Conger, you show me where I can find Maggie Bannock,
- 6:14Speaker 4: and I'll tell her.
- 6:14Speaker 3: THE END.
- 6:31Speaker 5: You know, Mr.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Dillon, when I was back in Texas and the weather.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Got extra dry and it was.
- 6:36Speaker 8: Hot and people begun getting on each other's touchbones more
- 6:39Speaker 8: than usual.
- 6:40Speaker 5: You know what happened?
- 6:42Speaker 2: No, what?
- 6:44Speaker 8: Well, sir, just when it seemed like everything else had
- 6:47Speaker 8: gone wrong, the circus had come to town.
- 6:51Speaker 10: Oh?
- 6:54Speaker 2: Chester, what are you trying to say? Hmm.
- 6:58Speaker 8: Well, back in Texas, after the circus had came and went,
- 7:04Speaker 8: everything was different.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It was?
- 7:06Speaker 5: Oh, yes, sir.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Somehow it didn't seem near so.
- 7:09Speaker 9: Hot nor so dry, and you even forgot what you
- 7:12Speaker 9: was fighting with your friends about.
- 7:13Speaker 4: That's the way it worked in Texas, huh?
- 7:15Speaker 5: Yes, sir, it did.
- 7:17Speaker 4: Chester, I know it's been hot and Dodge has been
- 7:20Speaker 4: pretty dull, but this particular circus isn't going to help any.
- 7:24Speaker 10: Why?
- 7:25Speaker 4: Because there's trouble connected with this show.
- 7:27Speaker 5: What kind of trouble?
- 7:28Speaker 4: I don't really know, Chester, but two people got killed
- 7:31Speaker 4: over in Hays and there's been trouble in other places. Yes, sir.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:38Speaker 4: There they are, down to the creek.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Oh, Mr. Dillon, just look at that string of wagons,
- 7:45Speaker 5: will you? Hey, looks to me like one of them
- 7:48Speaker 5: is stuck in.
- 7:48Speaker 2: The creek bed. Come on, let's get on there. All right, Maggie.
- 8:08Speaker 7: Hello, ma'am.
- 8:09Speaker 6: I'm Matt Dillon from Dodge City.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Glad to know you, Dillon.
- 8:23Speaker 6: You look like that other team we've been needing to
- 8:26Speaker 6: move this wagon.
- 8:27Speaker 5: You'll oblige, won't you?
- 8:28Speaker 2: Sure.
- 8:28Speaker 6: How about full staff there?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Chester? Sure. Come on, give us a hand.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Mr.
- 8:36Speaker 9: Dillon, you see what's in that wagon?
- 8:38Speaker 6: Oh, don't let that lion worry you. That's old Terrible Tom.
- 8:42Speaker 7: He hasn't got a.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Tooth in his hand.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Say, what are you, Dillon, a marshal? Yes, ma'am, that's right.
- 8:49Speaker 6: Boys, we made the big time.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I told you we would.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Come on, Marshall.
- 8:56Speaker 6: Let's get that poor old cat out of that water.
- 8:59Speaker 2: All right, ma'am. Come on, Chester.
- 9:02Speaker 4: All right, lads.
- 9:04Speaker 7: We've been horses now.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I got it, Maggie.
- 9:13Speaker 7: Come on, boys, get your shoulders into it.
- 9:16Speaker 4: All right, now.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Whip them up, lads. Here we go.
- 9:27Speaker 6: Boys, I thought we could do it.
- 9:29Speaker 2: We can, ma'am. Chester, let me have that corner, huh?
- 9:33Speaker 3: That old lion sure is watching me.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he'll be more help where you can't see him.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Get over there. That's it. All right, Maggie. Here we
- 9:44Speaker 2: go again.
- 9:45Speaker 7: Well done.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Never thought I'd need a... marshal.
- 10:02Speaker 6: Well, I guess you can't help being what you are.
- 10:05Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Maggie.
- 10:08Speaker 3: You aren't leaving Dodge, are you?
- 10:10Speaker 6: We're going to put on a show there tomorrow.
- 10:12Speaker 2: That's what I came to talk to you about.
- 10:14Speaker 6: Well, then talk.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Maggie, you can't bring your show to Dodge City.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Say, you are a big-time marshal, aren't you?
- 10:25Speaker 4: Your performance in Hays left two people dead.
- 10:28Speaker 6: They came looking for trouble and they got it, Marshal.
- 10:32Speaker 6: Now get out of my way.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I'm heading for Don.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Who started the trouble, Maggie?
- 10:37Speaker 5: I told you who started it.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Oberyn Kinsley, too. And Atchison. Seems like trouble follows your show, Maggie.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Now why?
- 10:46Speaker 6: You got a big badge on you, Marshal. Why don't
- 10:49Speaker 6: you figure it out for yourself?
- 10:52Speaker 3: Let's go, boys!
- 10:57Speaker 4: Maggie, you're not going to play dodge.
- 11:01Speaker 7: All right, Marshal.
- 11:03Speaker 5: We won't play dodge.
- 11:05Speaker 6: Does that make you feel better?
- 11:08Speaker 5: Move out, lad. Come on. Seems like an awful determined lady, Mr.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Dillon. Yeah.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Well, I guess you have to be to run a circus, Joseph.
- 11:26Speaker 2: All right, come on. Let's get back to town. Yes, sir.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I don't know why this way Mr.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Dillon sees this parade.
- 11:50Speaker 4: I swear he'll just have his selfish fit.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Chester?
- 11:53Speaker 4: Hello, Chester.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Where's Matt?
- 11:56Speaker 4: Miss Kitty, he slept in this morning.
- 11:57Speaker 5: I just ain't got the heart to wake him to
- 11:59Speaker 5: this parade.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I swear he's.
- 12:00Speaker 9: Going to have a conniption fit when he sees that
- 12:02Speaker 9: lady's plan to go ahead with her searches.
- 12:05Speaker 7: Beep.
- 12:08Speaker 6: Well, that ought to wake him up as nothing else does.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Good morning, kiddies.
- 12:16Speaker 9: Chester, where's the killjoy this morning?
- 12:19Speaker 1: You mean Matt?
- 12:20Speaker 6: Chester says he's still sleeping.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Sleeping with his parade going by under his nose.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Oh, and he did fine, Doc. He did just fine. Oh,
- 12:27Speaker 2: look at those three of you. You look like three
- 12:31Speaker 2: grubby little kids.
- 12:32Speaker 7: Well, Mr.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Hill, I didn't know you was up.
- 12:35Speaker 2: What did it start, Chester?
- 12:37Speaker 8: Oh, about 15 minutes ago, Jimmy just went by with
- 12:43Speaker 8: a big sign on her back saying circus at 2 o'clock.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Why didn't you come and wake me up? Well, I
- 12:50Speaker 2: just don't know, Mr. Dillon. You kind of go to
- 12:54Speaker 2: pieces around the circus, don't you, Chester? Oh, most people do, Matt.
- 12:58Speaker 8: It looks to me like you didn't scare that circus
- 13:00Speaker 8: owner too bad, Matt. And I don't mind admitting that
- 13:03Speaker 8: I'm glad.
- 13:04Speaker 9: I've enjoyed a little innocent entertainment for a change.
- 13:07Speaker 2: Innocent?
- 13:08Speaker 4: Doc, if this circus takes place, all the entertainment you're
- 13:10Speaker 4: going to get will be mending ahead.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Look at all the people on the street.
- 13:16Speaker 1: Word spread all over the county.
- 13:19Speaker 6: I bet people have come from miles around for this.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Why would they make trouble?
- 13:22Speaker 4: I don't know, Kitty, but there must be something that
- 13:25Speaker 4: sets them off. It's happened too many times.
- 13:29Speaker 2: And the dog. The dog, look at that clown.
- 13:32Speaker 7: He's coming right under the heels of.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Them horses.
- 13:37Speaker 10: Yes, but look what's on the horses.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Ever seen anything.
- 13:41Speaker 3: Like that in pink tights before? Oh, my.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Oh, my.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Well, I do and you should do.
- 13:48Speaker 6: It's good red-blooded fun. Oh, look at those pink-eyed human men.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Doc, I have to admit, there's something mighty fine about
- 13:58Speaker 4: hearing the music and seeing those animals and the clowns.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Are you sure it's the clowns, Matt? Look at that man, Mr.
- 14:04Speaker 4: Dillon.
- 14:04Speaker 6: He's standing on four horses at one time.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I'm going to try that.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Hey, you have enough trouble with one horse.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Well, I'd be fair. I feel like I could do it,
- 14:12Speaker 2: Miss Kitty.
- 14:12Speaker 4: They are, Matt.
- 14:13Speaker 8: You see, there's the magic of the circus.
- 14:16Speaker 4: A country boy like Chester can suddenly ride four horses.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And whether he ever does or not doesn't make any
- 14:22Speaker 3: difference at all.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yeah, sure, Doc.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Now, are you going to take that away from the
- 14:26Speaker 3: hard-working people of this county?
- 14:28Speaker 4: Doc, I like a circus as much as anybody.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Then prove it. Don't try to stop it. You're not
- 14:33Speaker 2: changing my mind. Oh, stubborn, that's what you are. I
- 14:36Speaker 2: may be. The way I see it, Matt.
- 14:40Speaker 9: You will have a riot on your hands if you
- 14:42Speaker 9: do something.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Mr.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Dillon, look, coming around the corner. Miss Bannock riding a
- 14:45Speaker 2: big white horse.
- 14:46Speaker 5: Oh, looky there what she's got.
- 14:51Speaker 8: She's carrying a Confederate flag.
- 14:55Speaker 2: So that's it. That's where the trouble starts.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Well, what are you going to do, Matt?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Good morning, Marshal Dillon.
- 15:03Speaker 6: It's a fine day for a circus, isn't it?
- 15:07Speaker 2: Hold up, Maggie. I want to talk to you. I
- 15:10Speaker 2: said hold up.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Let go of that bridle, Marshal. There's no law that.
- 15:14Speaker 6: Says we can't have the circus outside the town limits.
- 15:17Speaker 2: That's not what's bothering me now, Maggie. It's that flag.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Oh, that even bothers the law, don't it?
- 15:26Speaker 2: That's not what I mean.
- 15:27Speaker 6: This flag is all I got left, Marshal. My sons
- 15:32Speaker 6: died holding it high. Since then, I swore I'd hold
- 15:36Speaker 6: it for them. No Yankee yet has told me I
- 15:39Speaker 6: had to burn it. Are you going to?
- 15:42Speaker 4: I'm not telling you to burn it. I'm just saying
- 15:45Speaker 4: you shouldn't parade it through Kansas.
- 15:46Speaker 6: I'll do what I want, Marshal, whether it's Dodge City, Kansas,
- 15:50Speaker 6: or Atlanta, Georgia. Let go of that bridle.
- 15:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 15:58Speaker 4: But if you keep showing that flag, I can't be
- 16:00Speaker 4: responsible for what happens to you or your men.
- 16:04Speaker 6: We take care of ourselves, Marshal. Oh!
- 16:12Speaker 5: What are you going to do about it, Mr.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Jones? I hope I'm wrong, Chester.
- 16:19Speaker 4: It's about all I can do right now.
- 16:28Speaker 6: Well, another hour and the circus will.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Be starting, Matt.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 16:34Speaker 8: There's one thing in your favor, Matt.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Oh, I'm glad to hear that, Doc. What is it?
- 16:37Speaker 8: Yeah, we've been in the Long Branch almost an hour,
- 16:40Speaker 8: and I don't think more than 10 or 12 men
- 16:43Speaker 8: have been in for a drink.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Well, that'll help some. Where's Chester? Oh, I imagine he's
- 16:49Speaker 4: watering the elephant by now.
- 16:52Speaker 6: Matt, why don't you deputize 10 or 15 men and
- 16:55Speaker 6: take them out there.
- 16:56Speaker 5: To the circus? Stop the trouble before it starts.
- 16:58Speaker 4: I thought of that, Kitty, but it won't work.
- 17:00Speaker 10: Well, why not?
- 17:01Speaker 4: Do I put guns in the hands of 15 Yankees
- 17:04Speaker 4: or 15 Southerners?
- 17:07Speaker 5: Last chance to win your luck.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I see. I'm ready.
- 17:12Speaker 5: Hey, Barkey. How about some service here? We're in a hurry.
- 17:16Speaker 5: We got something to do, ain't we, boys?
- 17:18Speaker 2: You stay here, Teddy. I'll talk to him.
- 17:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Yeah, boys, look at you. Circus lover himself.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I want to know why you're dressed that way.
- 17:31Speaker 5: This little old Confederate coat, Marshal. What do you care?
- 17:35Speaker 4: I've never seen you wear any part of your uniform before.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Ain't had reason to wear it since the war ended.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Then why today?
- 17:42Speaker 5: Ain't you heard? This is my passport to the circus.
- 17:45Speaker 5: All us Johnny Rebs. Maggie lets us in free as
- 17:48Speaker 5: long as we got a piece of the old uniform on.
- 17:50Speaker 4: A piece of uniform and a gun. Is that your
- 17:52Speaker 4: ticket to the circus, Marshal? You're making a big thing
- 17:55Speaker 4: out of this. We just came in for some drinks.
- 17:57Speaker 4: The Long Branch is closed, Baxter.
- 17:59Speaker 5: Since when?
- 17:59Speaker 2: Since just now.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Your boys have had enough to drink.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Just drinking our way out to the circus, Marshal. You
- 18:05Speaker 5: ain't gonna try to kill that fun, too, are you?
- 18:09Speaker 4: And what is that supposed to mean?
- 18:10Speaker 10: Why, the whole town knows how you try to keep
- 18:13Speaker 10: the circus from playing.
- 18:14Speaker 5: People are saying you're stepping outside your duties, Marshal. Ain't
- 18:17Speaker 5: that right, boy?
- 18:17Speaker 2: You saying it too, Baxter? Yeah, I'm saying it too.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Only difference is I'm saying it this way.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Now, does anybody else want to try me?
- 18:30Speaker 2: Get him, boy.
- 18:32Speaker 5: He's just another dang old yank. Come on, get him.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Come on, yank it.
- 18:37Speaker 10: Come on.
- 18:39Speaker 4: The next man that makes a move, I'll shoot him
- 18:42Speaker 4: in the leg.
- 18:45Speaker 2: All right, start walking, all of you. Walking?
- 18:48Speaker 4: Where to?
- 18:48Speaker 2: Jail.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Marshal, you can't lock us up. We're going to the circus.
- 18:52Speaker 2: No, you're not. You're going to jail. For what?
- 18:55Speaker 5: We ain't done nothing.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Doc, these men look drunk to me.
- 18:58Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 19:00Speaker 5: Never seen anything worse. What are you talking about?
- 19:02Speaker 2: All right, you men. The doctor says you're drunk. Now
- 19:05Speaker 2: start walking.
- 19:13Speaker 10: Hey, Ginny, you want a piece of this apple?
- 19:27Speaker 2: There, you hear that, Ginny?
- 19:29Speaker 10: That was my music from my climbing act back in
- 19:31Speaker 10: the old days. Yes, sir, I'd go in there and
- 19:34Speaker 10: climb that.
- 19:35Speaker 5: Center pole faster than any man in the business.
- 19:39Speaker 10: Oh, Jimmy, you're the only woman I ever loved outside
- 19:42Speaker 10: of Maggie. Here, have some more apple, huh?
- 19:46Speaker 2: Come on. Hey, Jim.
- 19:48Speaker 10: What?
- 19:49Speaker 9: Oh, howdy, Marshal.
- 19:51Speaker 10: Didn't know anyone was around. Suppose you heard me talking
- 19:54Speaker 10: to Jenny here.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I heard you, Jim.
- 19:56Speaker 10: You probably think I'm kind of crazy.
- 19:58Speaker 4: No, I thought Jim.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Look, I need your help.
- 20:01Speaker 4: That crowd's getting mean in there, and I got to
- 20:03Speaker 4: slow them down.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I know, Marshal.
- 20:05Speaker 10: You hang that flag off the top of that center pole,
- 20:08Speaker 10: and then they fight the war all over again. Maybe
- 20:12Speaker 10: if Maggie had had sons in the war, she would
- 20:14Speaker 10: have let it end proper like that.
- 20:17Speaker 5: What?
- 20:17Speaker 4: She told me her sons died because of that flag.
- 20:20Speaker 10: No, no, no, Marshal. We never had no children. We
- 20:24Speaker 10: always wanted some. When the war came along, Maggie went
- 20:27Speaker 10: in as a nurse... She saw a lot of the
- 20:30Speaker 10: boys die, and each one was just like her own.
- 20:33Speaker 2: And she just never got over it.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Yeah, so that's it.
- 20:37Speaker 10: What can I do, Marshal? This thing has got to stop.
- 20:41Speaker 10: I tried to tell Maggie, but she just won't listen
- 20:43Speaker 10: to me.
- 20:44Speaker 4: I'll tell you what you can do, Jim. You can
- 20:45Speaker 4: find me six men that think the way you do
- 20:47Speaker 4: and have them meet me by the main tent right away. Now,
- 21:04Speaker 4: do you men understand what I want you to do?
- 21:07Speaker 2: Yeah, they got it, Marshal.
- 21:08Speaker 10: They cut the rope when you give the word.
- 21:10Speaker 9: That crowd's getting meaner every minute.
- 21:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 2: All right, then, you men go on before it's too late.
- 21:15Speaker 5: What do you want me to do, Mr.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Dillon?
- 21:17Speaker 2: You just follow me and do what I tell you.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Where are you going?
- 21:20Speaker 4: In there.
- 21:21Speaker 8: All right.
- 21:21Speaker 10: I'll go, too, Marshal.
- 21:22Speaker 7: All right.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Well, that's the start of it. Come on, Chester. All right,
- 21:33Speaker 2: listen to me.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Fire! Yes, we'll fire a couple.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Of rounds from the air.
- 21:44Speaker 7: Now, everybody, settle down.
- 21:49Speaker 5: Fire now.
- 21:50Speaker 4: I'll show you keep out of this.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Then the I.J.
- 21:55Speaker 5: Started the trouble.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Listen, everybody.
- 21:58Speaker 2: I've got men stationed around outside this tent.
- 22:01Speaker 4: If any man leaves his seat before the show's over,
- 22:03Speaker 4: I'll have him cut.
- 22:04Speaker 2: The ropes and drop the tent.
- 22:06Speaker 7: Don't let him buffalo you.
- 22:08Speaker 2: He wouldn't dare.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Maggie, I will if you'll make me.
- 22:11Speaker 9: It's that flag up there that's causing all this trouble.
- 22:13Speaker 2: I'm going to bring you down.
- 22:15Speaker 10: No, Jim.
- 22:16Speaker 7: You'll fall. Mr.
- 22:18Speaker 9: Dillon looked at him climb that pole.
- 22:20Speaker 10: Jim.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Jim.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Don't try it. Jim, please.
- 22:24Speaker 7: Please, Jim.
- 22:25Speaker 3: You can't climb no more.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I'm doing it, Maggie.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Look here, Maggie. I got it. I got your flag, Maggie.
- 22:37Speaker 5: The war... The war's over.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Jim!
- 22:44Speaker 5: Oh, you fell, Mr.
- 22:45Speaker 7: Dillon.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Stand back, Chester. You take it easy, Jim.
- 22:54Speaker 4: It's all right now.
- 22:56Speaker 5: Jim.
- 22:56Speaker 10: Jim.
- 22:57Speaker 5: Oh, my poor Jim.
- 22:58Speaker 9: Jim.
- 23:01Speaker 6: Why did you try?
- 23:02Speaker 2: Maggie, darling, I.
- 23:05Speaker 3: I had to.
- 23:06Speaker 2: You wouldn't let the war end. But I will, Jim.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Don't die.
- 23:13Speaker 6: I will, I promise. I'll never put the flag up again, Jim.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Maggie.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I'm... I'm sorry. I.
- 23:23Speaker 3: Maggie.
- 23:32Speaker 10: I lost the last of my boys, Marshal.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Jim was the last of them.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Would you.
- 23:44Speaker 5: Lay him out gently? Yes, ma'am.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Chester. And, Marshal, you can bury the flag. Gunsmoke.
