- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Whoop. So today we're talking about our
- 0:33second, you get to decide and today is all about the story.
- 0:39So often what happens, once you have your perspective, you
- 0:43create a story and that story obviously is from that
- 0:48perspective because it's whatever emotion is driving.
- 0:51That's what's going to do it, that's what's going to give you
- 0:54that wholeheartedly, you've got that emotion.
- 0:57You've got that tied in your most.
- 1:00Still stuck in that emotion and you are going to stay there and
- 1:05then you tell a story about that and then that story starts to
- 1:08drive everything. And you know what's interesting
- 1:11about stories, they tend to morph over time just like
- 1:15humankind is built around stories and storytelling by the
- 1:19fires. And that's how we learn the best
- 1:21learning in the world is done through stories because we can
- 1:23remember them easier, facts. Get very muddled.
- 1:27And often the stories are what? Stick with us.
- 1:31So it's incredibly important to recognize that the quality of
- 1:35the story you're telling yourself about a situation about
- 1:39yourself, whatever it might be is going to stick with you.
- 1:42Make no mistake about it and if you start to tell a really
- 1:46crappy story, you are going to have a really really tough time.
- 1:50Because I guarantee you over time that story is going to more
- 1:55and it's going to get more and more and more convoluted.
- 1:59And if any of Listen for any length of time.
- 2:02You know, I've told a story about how my father used to talk
- 2:05about these fish and chips that his friend made, and how he
- 2:09stopped making them at his restaurant, on Fridays, because
- 2:12he didn't need the money anymore to put his daughter through this
- 2:15private school. So he just, he just essentially
- 2:18stopped making these fish and chips.
- 2:20Well, they became a legend and when he decided he wanted to
- 2:24make them again, to pay for her to go through grad school.
- 2:29Think it was grad school. It was one of those situations
- 2:33where we all couldn't. Wait, we could not wait to have
- 2:36the fish and chips again, but the story we had been telling
- 2:39ourselves about these fish and chips over the years, obviously
- 2:42got a little stretched out, and by the time we got to have them
- 2:45again, they were not as great as we remembered them to be.
- 2:48But that's the thing with stories and that's why we're
- 2:51talking about them, is that this it we stretch them out, we make
- 2:54them be different than the reality is and in the process of
- 2:58doing that. That hurts us, more can help us
- 3:01to but it usually the stories end up hurting us when it comes
- 3:06through certain filters, let's say, and when we start to make
- 3:11things worse than they are. So when you make something the
- 3:16infractions bigger, when you stretch them out, when you make
- 3:20the offense bigger, when you hang onto the effects, when you
- 3:24really poor in and give yourself the permission to make this
- 3:27offense so big. There's no way anybody's going
- 3:30to get by it. That's the crazy part.
- 3:32Nobody's going to get by the offense because it's so huge.
- 3:35So you have to stop and pause and I'm not even joking.
- 3:40Sit and write it down. What's the story?
- 3:42I'm telling myself about this and then, when you're in that
- 3:46mode, when you're capturing the story, you can ask yourself.
- 3:50Well, is this the story I choose to tell?
- 3:52Or can I tell a different story? Do I want to tell a different
- 3:56story? Is there a different way to tell
- 3:57the story? Because all of Of those are true
- 4:00to as we know multiple things can be true at the same time.
- 4:05So understanding which ones you're going to hang onto, could
- 4:09not be more critical and in that sense of deciding what that
- 4:15story is going to be. I promise you, you will get
- 4:18upset. I promise you.
- 4:19It will be irritating. I promise you.
- 4:22You will get frustrated because that's the nature of this.
- 4:26It is just very, very Very complex and complicated to look
- 4:32at yourself and recognize these things and it's worth every bit
- 4:36of the tedious Journey that it sometimes can be.
- 4:38Because then you have ultimate control over your emotions, what
- 4:42you think how you feel other than that, you're letting other
- 4:45people take over for you. So the story go.
- 4:50Look at the story, write it down, decide how you want it to
- 4:53go, what it's going to mean to you.
- 4:55The other day, I was on a call with a group of people, and I
- 4:58was a participant. But on the call, and I listened
- 5:01to a young lady telling a story about what had happened to her
- 5:07in a meaning. She was in and how this action
- 5:14because she was female had gotten to her and how she felt
- 5:21that the males in the room were showing up a certain way and
- 5:23what it meant and lots of different things.
- 5:26There were lots and lots and lots of different meanings in
- 5:28all of this. Did she have to see it that way?
- 5:33The reality is no. She did not have to see it that
- 5:36way. And I have been in other
- 5:37situations where women have not chosen to see things that way.
- 5:43And again, this comes back to perspective and story, I have
- 5:47the privilege of coaching some very, very powerful women in the
- 5:50world, and some of them are at the top of their game.
- 5:55When I say the top there in the top, 10 of top 10% of their Game
- 6:00and whatever industry that maybe and I will tell you, they don't
- 6:06take that perspective when they're presented with it.
- 6:08They take a completely opposite approach because they're going
- 6:12to walk into it and they're not going to let somebody make them
- 6:15feel marginalized because there are female or for whatever other
- 6:19reason they decide what the story is mean to them.
- 6:22So the powerful part in this is you have the control.
- 6:26You just have to assume it and take it and decide what you It
- 6:29to me. So you sit down, you write it on
- 6:31a piece of paper. What did this mean to me?
- 6:34As it is if it's and write it out, put the angry stuff on
- 6:37there and then make the decision to say, okay, what else could it
- 6:40mean? And debrief yourself and get
- 6:44clear on that and I promise you it will help and you can do this
- 6:47in the reverse even if this is something that you've been
- 6:48carrying around forever, you can do it.
- 6:51You can go ahead and do it. Write it down because I promise
- 6:53you can get rid of a lot of garbage this way and a lot of
- 6:56baggage. All right, my friends, I will
- 6:58see you tomorrow. Hope you have a blessed day.
- 7:00Bye.
