- 0:00Speaker 1: Written by John Meston, with Norman MacDonald directing and producing,
- 0:04Speaker 1: this CBS drama stars William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon.
- 0:10Speaker 1: On January 30th, 1954, Gunsmoke presented episode 93, Gunsmuggler, with
- 0:17Speaker 1: Parley Bear as Chester, Georgia Ellis as Kitty, Howard McNear
- 0:21Speaker 1: as Doc, and John Diener, Lawrence Dobkin, Harry Bartell, Barney Phillips,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and Jack Edwards also heard. After a homesteading family is
- 0:31Speaker 1: killed by rifles traced to Pawnee raiders, Dillon finds evidence
- 0:35Speaker 1: of a white man supplying illegal arms. With Chester and
- 0:39Speaker 1: an indigenous scout, the marshal follows the trail before the
- 0:42Speaker 1: violence spreads further. Here is the original broadcast.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's
- 0:58Speaker 2: just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:01Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Marshal and the smell of gun smoke.

- 1:23Speaker 2: Gunsmoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that
- 1:27Speaker 2: moved west with young America. The story of a man
- 1:31Speaker 2: who moved with it. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal.
- 1:35Speaker 5: Gunsmoke Come over here, Matt.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Take a look at these. Huh? Which do you think's prettiest?
- 2:05Speaker 6: I don't wear galluses, Kitty. Not like those, anyway.
- 2:11Speaker 7: Oh, Matt.
- 2:12Speaker 3: Mr. Jonas ordered them all the way from New York.
- 2:15Speaker 3: We've got to encourage him. The store will never stock
- 2:18Speaker 3: anything but beans and ammunition.
- 2:20Speaker 6: Well, I can use beans and ammunition, but I won't
- 2:23Speaker 6: wear those.
- 2:23Speaker 3: They're lovely. You'd look nice in a pair of bright suspenders.
- 2:27Speaker 8: Galluses.
- 2:28Speaker 5: All right, galluses.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You like the purple ones? No.
- 2:32Speaker 9: But they're not as bad as those pink and orange ones.
- 2:36Speaker 9: But what is that they got stitched on them, anyway?
- 2:39Speaker 3: Chickens? Don't be silly.
- 2:41Speaker 6: They're parrots.
- 2:42Speaker 3: They're fancy, Matt.
- 2:43Speaker 6: They sure are.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I'll buy them for you.
- 2:45Speaker 6: No, you won't.
- 2:46Speaker 7: Please, Matt.
- 2:47Speaker 9: Give them to Chester if you want. They're more his
- 2:49Speaker 9: style than mine.
- 2:50Speaker 5: All right, I will.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You refuse to be elegant.
- 2:53Speaker 10: I refuse.
- 2:54Speaker 9: And if Chester has any sense, he will, too. Or
- 2:58Speaker 9: are those people who think he's a whiskey drummer or
- 3:00Speaker 9: a barber?
- 3:01Speaker 3: That beat's looking like a buffalo, Hunter.
- 3:04Speaker 11: Mr.
- 3:04Speaker 8: Dillon?
- 3:05Speaker 3: Oh, you looking for me, Chester? Yes, sir. Hello, Miss Kitty.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Good morning, Chester. Uh, Mr. Dillon, there's a sergeant from
- 3:12Speaker 3: Fort Dodge over at the office. Major Evans sent him in.
- 3:15Speaker 6: Oh, what does he want?
- 3:16Speaker 3: He says the Major... Gracious alive, look at them galaxies.
- 3:23Speaker 9: My.
- 3:23Speaker 6: What does he want, Chester?
- 3:26Speaker 3: He says the Major wants to talk to you.
- 3:29Speaker 7: Oh.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Right away, he said. Chicken.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Well, where is the Major?
- 3:34Speaker 12: Hmm? The Major.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Oh, out at Fort Dodge, I guess.
- 3:38Speaker 9: Oh, Chester, you tell the Sergeant I might ride out
- 3:40Speaker 9: sometime tomorrow if I'm not busy.
- 3:42Speaker 8: Yes, sir.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Well, it's only five miles, Matt. Might be important. I know.
- 3:47Speaker 6: But I've dealt with Major Evans before, Kitty. Was there
- 4:03Speaker 6: any mail.
- 4:04Speaker 3: This noon, Chester? No, sir, not a thing. For three
- 4:07Speaker 3: days now.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Yeah, that's much less trouble. Uh-oh.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Here comes some trouble crossing the plaza.
- 4:13Speaker 6: Now what?
- 4:15Speaker 3: Major Evans.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Huh? Well, I guess he really does want to see me.
- 4:19Speaker 8: Sure looks like it.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Good afternoon, Marshal.
- 4:27Speaker 6: Well, how are you, Major? Why don't you sit down?
- 4:30Speaker 3: No, thanks.
- 4:32Speaker 8: Hello, Major Evans.
- 4:33Speaker 3: Hello, Chester. Marshal, I sent Sergeant Bowers after you this morning.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Well, I was figuring on maybe riding out tomorrow, Major.
- 4:42Speaker 3: I prefer not to wait another day. Oh, what's the trouble?
- 4:45Speaker 3: Pawnees are raiding again.
- 4:48Speaker 6: I hadn't heard that.
- 4:49Speaker 3: Well, it's an Army matter. Except for one thing.
- 4:51Speaker 8: Oh?
- 4:53Speaker 3: They've been supplied with rifles, Marshal, and I'm convinced those
- 4:56Speaker 3: rifles come out of Dodge.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Why?
- 4:58Speaker 3: Well, it's the closest source of supply, and I want
- 5:00Speaker 3: you to stop it.
- 5:01Speaker 9: I'll gladly stop it, Major. If it's true, we can
- 5:06Speaker 9: find that out easily enough.
- 5:07Speaker 8: How?
- 5:08Speaker 9: We'll go over and see Mr. Jonas right across the
- 5:10Speaker 9: street there. I'll be back shortly, Chester.
- 5:13Speaker 8: Okay, Chester.
- 5:13Speaker 6: Come along.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Who is this Jonas, Marshal?
- 5:21Speaker 6: He's the only man in Dodge who sells rifles.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Oh, I see.
- 5:24Speaker 6: If anybody's been buying lately, he'll know.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Can he be trusted?
- 5:28Speaker 6: I trust him.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Well, somebody's been buying rifles here, and they might have
- 5:34Speaker 3: paid this Jonas to keep it quiet.
- 5:36Speaker 6: He isn't that kind of a man, Major.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Well.
- 5:47Speaker 13: I hope you're going to buy something this time, Marshal.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Well, I'm afraid not, Mr. Jonas, but I want you
- 5:51Speaker 6: to meet Major Evans from Fort Dodge.
- 5:54Speaker 3: How do you do, Major? Mr. Jonas? What can I
- 5:57Speaker 3: do for you?
- 5:58Speaker 9: We'd like to know if anybody's been buying rifles in
- 6:02Speaker 9: quantity lately.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Indian trouble, huh? Yeah, I told you, Marshal. Told him what?
- 6:08Speaker 3: That you've been selling rifles to some gun smuggler. No, Major,
- 6:12Speaker 3: I don't believe I have. Now do you know whether
- 6:15Speaker 3: you have or not? Anybody can walk in here. Sure
- 6:18Speaker 3: they can.
- 6:20Speaker 13: But if I didn't know them, and they bought up
- 6:22Speaker 13: a wagon load of rifles on the sudden, I'd tell
- 6:25Speaker 13: the marshal about it right off. The only men who've
- 6:28Speaker 13: ever been in here are buffalo hunters, and they only buy.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Two or three rifles at the most. Well, Major, those
- 6:35Speaker 3: rifles are coming from Dodge somehow. I know they are.
- 6:38Speaker 3: And I'll stop it if I have to search every
- 6:40Speaker 3: wagon that leaves here.
- 6:41Speaker 6: You mean you'd use soldiers for that? Yes. That'd be trouble.
- 6:46Speaker 9: Sooner or later, they'd try to stop some hardhead who'd
- 6:49Speaker 9: start shooting.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Soldiers are trained to shoot back, Marshal.
- 6:52Speaker 6: I don't want innocent men shot down for no reason
- 6:54Speaker 6: at all, Major.
- 6:55Speaker 3: The Pawnees raided a ranch down on Crooked Creek just
- 6:57Speaker 3: this morning, Marshal, 50 miles from here. They did?
- 7:01Speaker 6: How come nobody's heard about it?
- 7:02Speaker 3: The man and the woman can't be moved, and their
- 7:04Speaker 3: two boys were killed at once. The cavalry patrol found
- 7:07Speaker 3: them this morning and sent a messenger to the fort.
- 7:09Speaker 6: Why didn't you tell me this before? We've got to
- 7:10Speaker 6: get dark down there.
- 7:11Speaker 3: I'm on my way there myself. We'll give you an escort, Marshal.
- 7:14Speaker 13: Good.
- 7:15Speaker 6: If you can keep up with us.
- 7:33Speaker 2: We will return for the second act of Gunsmoke in
- 7:35Speaker 2: just a moment. But first, there is a definite betting
- 7:38Speaker 2: pattern that overtakes a community when the gamblers move in.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Here are the facts, plain, unvarnished. In the words of
- 7:45Speaker 2: those actually involved, tomorrow, when CBS Radio's hard-hitting Department of
- 7:50Speaker 2: Public Affairs offers a full-hour documentary expose titled The Gamblers. Remember,
- 7:56Speaker 2: it's tomorrow on most of these same stations. Don Hollenbeck narrates,
- 8:00Speaker 2: and the brazen facts speak for themselves. Now the second
- 8:04Speaker 2: act of Gunsmoke.
- 8:09Speaker 9: Gunsmoke We rode hard, but it was nearly dawn when
- 8:26Speaker 9: we reached what was left of the ranch on Crooked Creek.
- 8:30Speaker 6: It had been burned, of course, and the stock destroyed.
- 8:33Speaker 9: Half a dozen men of the Cavalry Patrol were standing
- 8:37Speaker 9: on all-night watch while their Indian scout Tobiel slept peacefully
- 8:42Speaker 9: in his blanket.
- 8:44Speaker 6: The lieutenant in charge informed us.
- 8:46Speaker 9: That the man and the woman had both died soon
- 8:49Speaker 9: after he dispatched his messenger to Fort Dodge. But Doc
- 8:53Speaker 9: wanted to have a look at him anyway, so... Major
- 8:56Speaker 9: Evans and Chester and I went to the fire.
- 9:00Speaker 6: Had a cup of coffee.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I don't know anything I'd rather have right now than
- 9:08Speaker 3: this coffee.
- 9:10Speaker 6: You ought to join the army, Chester.
- 9:12Speaker 3: The army doesn't usually serve coffee all night, and I
- 9:15Speaker 3: don't approve of this fire.
- 9:17Speaker 9: Major, look at Tabeel over there. If he thought the
- 9:21Speaker 9: Pawnees would be back, he'd have put the fire out himself.
- 9:25Speaker 9: Sound asleep. I suppose you're right, Marshal. After all, he's
- 9:29Speaker 9: an Indian himself. He's a good scout, too.
- 9:35Speaker 6: I've known Tabeel a long time.
- 9:37Speaker 3: He's rather undisciplined, but valuable.
- 9:42Speaker 6: I bet he is. On both counts. How about that? Well?
- 9:51Speaker 8: All the usual things, man.
- 9:55Speaker 3: And a few new ones.
- 9:57Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Chester, get Doc some coffee, will you?
- 10:04Speaker 3: Oh, sure. Scalped, I suppose.
- 10:13Speaker 6: For a start, Major.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Worse than that?
- 10:19Speaker 1: How that man lived as long as he did, I
- 10:22Speaker 1: don't know.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Savage devils.
- 10:28Speaker 6: But I think the woman was unconscious during most of it.
- 10:31Speaker 3: The man must have.
- 10:33Speaker 6: Tried to kill her and only grazed her head. How
- 10:37Speaker 6: do you know, Doc? Here's your coffee, Doc.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Oh, thank you. Thank you, Chester.
- 10:46Speaker 6: The groove across her head was too.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Narrow for a rifle bullet, Matt.
- 10:53Speaker 6: And I don't think those Pawnees had pistols.
- 10:56Speaker 3: No, but they certainly had rifles.
- 10:58Speaker 6: Oh, that reminds me again. I dug a bullet out
- 11:02Speaker 6: of a man, Matt. Here it.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Is.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Huh.
- 11:10Speaker 10: Huh.
- 11:10Speaker 6: That's funny.
- 11:12Speaker 3: What is it?
- 11:14Speaker 6: This is a. 44 caliber. You don't see many of
- 11:18Speaker 6: them anymore. Here, take a look, Major.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yes, I believe you're right. What do you make of it, Marshal?
- 11:30Speaker 6: Major, I think I can find this gun smuggler.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You do?
- 11:35Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 9: I'd like to borrow Tobiel over there to help me.
- 11:41Speaker 3: My scout? What for?
- 11:43Speaker 9: Well, those Pawnees have a day's start on us, but
- 11:45Speaker 9: with Tobiel's help, I think I can catch up with them.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Oh, no, no, no. I'm afraid that'll bring out the
- 11:50Speaker 3: old crime. No, I'll run this war party down myself
- 11:55Speaker 3: as soon as their supply of arms is cut off.
- 11:57Speaker 9: Well, there'll just be Tobiel and Chester and me, Major.
- 11:59Speaker 9: It's the gun smuggler I'm after, not the Indians.
- 12:02Speaker 3: Then I'll go with you.
- 12:03Speaker 9: Now, they'd spot a troop of cavalry, but three of
- 12:05Speaker 9: us can get through the country without their knowing it,
- 12:07Speaker 9: if we have any luck at all.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Just what do you have in mind, Marshalman?
- 12:15Speaker 6: I'll tell you later if it works.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Well, I guess I can't stop you.
- 12:20Speaker 6: No, you can't. Then I'll go without Tabeel if I
- 12:23Speaker 6: have to. Yes, you would.
- 12:27Speaker 3: All right, Marshal.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Take him. Thanks.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I just hope you know what you're doing.
- 12:34Speaker 6: Major, does a man ever know? For sure.
- 12:42Speaker 7: Go on, E, ride slow.
- 12:59Speaker 3: They don't think we follow. Well, I just hope they
- 13:03Speaker 3: don't find out, Tobio. Too bad they find out.
- 13:09Speaker 7: Maybe 34-knee war party.
- 13:13Speaker 3: They kill us very easy. We better breathe our horses
- 13:17Speaker 3: a little. Let's stop here. Right now, I wish I
- 13:29Speaker 3: was in the army. I'd feel a whole lot safer. Marshal,
- 13:34Speaker 3: why we follow four knees?
- 13:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I'd feel better if I knew myself. Maybe.
- 13:42Speaker 9: Well, I'll tell you. First of all, that was a.
- 13:46Speaker 9: 44 caliber bullet Doc found in that rancher's body.
- 13:50Speaker 12: Only a Henry rifle shoot.
- 13:54Speaker 10: 44, huh?
- 13:55Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, Tobiel.
- 13:57Speaker 3: My, I ain't seen a. 44 Henry since I can remember.
- 14:00Speaker 6: No, most of the buffalo hunters around here use a. 45.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Or if they use a Sharps or a Remington, that's a.
- 14:08Speaker 8: 50.
- 14:09Speaker 6: You just don't see many.
- 14:11Speaker 8: 44s.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Army, they have all Springfield.
- 14:14Speaker 8: 45s.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Yeah, but somebody's cornered a bunch of them Henry.
- 14:18Speaker 3: 44s and sold them to the Pawnees. Is that what
- 14:22Speaker 3: you figured?
- 14:22Speaker 6: Yeah, that's right, Chester. But whoever it is didn't think
- 14:26Speaker 6: far enough ahead.
- 14:27Speaker 3: What do you mean?
- 14:28Speaker 9: Well, he sold his rifles, all right, but his customers
- 14:31Speaker 9: are going to have to come back to him for ammunition.
- 14:34Speaker 6: I can't get it anyplace else. And the market's all his.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Sounds to me like he's created a pretty good business.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Yeah, too good. Now those Pawnees will be looking for him.
- 14:45Speaker 6: And him alone.
- 14:47Speaker 12: Marshal Wright. Most Indians only need rifles. Steel ammunition all over.
- 14:53Speaker 12: One place, other place. Hmm.
- 14:57Speaker 3: Pawnee, no fine. 44 bullet, no place.
- 15:01Speaker 6: So they'll go back to this man. They have to
- 15:04Speaker 6: find him.
- 15:05Speaker 9: If we can keep on their trail long enough, we'll
- 15:07Speaker 9: just naturally find him, too.
- 15:08Speaker 12: 34 knee on Warpath.
- 15:11Speaker 3: All armed with good rifles.
- 15:14Speaker 12: Maybe find us before we find them.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Yeah. I guess it could work both ways.
- 15:23Speaker 6: Well, nobody's gonna find anybody.
- 15:26Speaker 3: If we sit here.
- 15:31Speaker 6: All right, let's get moving.
- 15:39Speaker 9: The Pawnee Trail led south in a straight line, as
- 15:43Speaker 9: though they.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Knew exactly where they were going.
- 15:47Speaker 3: We followed them for.
- 15:48Speaker 9: Two days, and on the third, Tobiel informed us that
- 15:52Speaker 9: the war party.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Had been joined by another one of about equal strength.
- 15:57Speaker 9: A band of Indians this large had protected itself with
- 16:00Speaker 9: a ring of Scots, so we were... forced to drop
- 16:04Speaker 9: back and follow him more slowly. Then they turned to
- 16:08Speaker 9: the east. And on the fourth day, we began to wonder.
- 16:12Speaker 6: If we were wrong about their trying to find the
- 16:14Speaker 6: gun smuggler.
- 16:16Speaker 9: Maybe they were just going to lose themselves in Oklahoma territory.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Hey, country marshal.
- 16:27Speaker 12: For me, maybe blow.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Apart like sand.
- 16:32Speaker 6: You mean they might separate and wait a while before
- 16:35Speaker 6: raiding back into Kansas?
- 16:37Speaker 3: Sometimes do. Mr. Dillon, look. Yonder comes a rider. What?
- 16:44Speaker 3: White man. Cowboy.
- 16:47Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:49Speaker 3: He's riding pretty hard.
- 16:50Speaker 12: Ride like man afraid.
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah, let's wait here for him. Cowboy. Hello. Hello. You're
- 17:15Speaker 3: headed in the wrong direction.
- 17:17Speaker 6: Oh, why?
- 17:18Speaker 3: You men are smart. Go turn around and ride. This
- 17:22Speaker 3: country's alive with Pawnee.
- 17:23Speaker 6: You see any?
- 17:25Speaker 3: If I had, I probably wouldn't be here to tell
- 17:27Speaker 3: you about it. But I've seen plenty of sign. And
- 17:30Speaker 3: the worst kind of sign, too. What do you mean?
- 17:33Speaker 3: They had a powwow of some sort about 20 miles
- 17:35Speaker 3: back from me, mister. They left a white man there. How?
- 17:40Speaker 6: Was he dead?
- 17:42Speaker 3: Just about. Did you talk to him? I talked to him.
- 17:47Speaker 3: But he didn't have much to say. Not with no tongue.
- 17:51Speaker 6: You left him there?
- 17:52Speaker 3: That's not all I done to him. But he could
- 17:55Speaker 3: still use one hand. I give him my six-gun.
- 17:58Speaker 6: Ah, I see.
- 17:59Speaker 3: It's a funny thing, though. There was wagon tracks leading
- 18:03Speaker 3: into that camp and leading out of it, too. Can't
- 18:06Speaker 3: figure it no how. For me, we'll probably not keep wagon, Marshal. Marshal?
- 18:12Speaker 3: You're chasing them engines? No.
- 18:15Speaker 9: It's the wagon we're after. And whoever's driving it. Well,
- 18:21Speaker 9: your business, Marshal.
- 18:23Speaker 3: But I'm riding all the way to Dodge, and I'm
- 18:24Speaker 3: going to stay there.
- 18:27Speaker 6: Maybe we'll see you when we get back.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I'll be there. But I wouldn't gamble on seeing you.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So long.
- 18:34Speaker 6: So long.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Well, what do you make of it, Mr.
- 18:40Speaker 5: Dillon?
- 18:41Speaker 9: Well, as Tobiel says, the Pawnees wouldn't fool around with
- 18:44Speaker 9: a wagon.
- 18:46Speaker 6: There must have been more than one white man.
- 18:48Speaker 12: We find the wagon, I think, maybe five, six hours.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Yeah, but it'll be dark soon. Tobiel, track wagon, and duck.
- 18:56Speaker 9: They're going to have to move fast to be out
- 18:59Speaker 9: of this country by daylight.
- 19:01Speaker 6: We move.
- 19:02Speaker 5: We move.
- 19:12Speaker 10: Yeah, that's the wagon.
- 19:30Speaker 6: But I only see one man there, Toby. One man.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Big fire.
- 19:39Speaker 6: Full white man fire. We've crawled close enough. Let's stop here. There.
- 19:50Speaker 6: We gonna rush him, Mr.
- 19:51Speaker 8: Dillon?
- 19:53Speaker 6: If he starts shooting, Chester, we'll have the Pawnees down
- 19:56Speaker 6: on us. Wait for sleep. Tobiel.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Crawl up. Cut throat.
- 20:04Speaker 6: Now. Now, Tobiel.
- 20:08Speaker 8: Tobiel.
- 20:10Speaker 6: I've got to be sure this is the right man. Yeah,
- 20:13Speaker 6: but how are you going to find out? Well, bluff him.
- 20:20Speaker 9: Look, Chester, you and Tobie will stay here. I'm going
- 20:28Speaker 9: to walk up to that fire.
- 20:31Speaker 6: You're taking an awful chance, Mr.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Dillon.
- 20:37Speaker 12: Me on me.
- 20:40Speaker 6: Thanks.
- 20:40Speaker 8: Stop where you are. Get your hands up.
- 20:54Speaker 11: No.
- 20:54Speaker 6: I'll kill you.
- 20:56Speaker 9: And my friends out there will kill you.
- 20:58Speaker 10: What friends?
- 21:01Speaker 6: Put your gun away, mister. You haven't got a chance.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Who are you anyway? What are you doing here?
- 21:06Speaker 6: Put up your gun. They might get nervous.
- 21:10Speaker 3: How do I know anybody's out there?
- 21:11Speaker 6: All right, then shoot, and you'll find out.
- 21:15Speaker 7: Well, go ahead.
- 21:17Speaker 3: You must be crazy.
- 21:21Speaker 6: All right, I'll put it up. There. All right, now
- 21:26Speaker 6: tell me about you and the Pawnees.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Pawnees? What are you talking about?
- 21:32Speaker 9: I want to know where you got those rifles you
- 21:34Speaker 9: sold them.
- 21:35Speaker 6: Those Henry 44s. You're a law man. Don't try it, mister.
- 21:40Speaker 6: You can't outdraw me. Maybe not. But I can sure
- 21:45Speaker 6: bring them Indians down on you fast. Bet you won't
- 21:48Speaker 6: live to see them.
- 21:48Speaker 3: I won't hang either.
- 21:49Speaker 9: You won't hang. You'll get about ten years in prison.
- 21:52Speaker 9: It's not enough, but that's all you'll get.
- 21:55Speaker 3: What are you, a sheriff or something?
- 21:58Speaker 6: A U.S. Marshal.
- 22:00Speaker 11: No, Marshal, all I gotta do is shoot or make
- 22:02Speaker 11: you shoot.
- 22:03Speaker 6: And them Pawnees will take care of the rest.
- 22:07Speaker 3: So....
- 22:08Speaker 6: I'll make you a deal. I don't make deals, mister.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Well, you have to make this one if you want
- 22:12Speaker 3: to live. Because I've decided I'd just as soon die
- 22:15Speaker 3: right here. I spent ten years in prison.
- 22:17Speaker 6: Well, what about your partner?
- 22:19Speaker 3: My partner?
- 22:22Speaker 7: You know everything, don't you?
- 22:24Speaker 6: Just about. You can't touch him.
- 22:28Speaker 3: He's with the Pawnees.
- 22:30Speaker 11: They keep him as sort of a hostage till I
- 22:33Speaker 11: get back from Tascosa with more ammunition.
- 22:35Speaker 6: You buy the rifles in Tascosa?
- 22:37Speaker 3: Sure.
- 22:39Speaker 11: But them Indians is kind of mad about not finding.
- 22:41Speaker 11: 44 caliber bullets real handy. We foxed him good.
- 22:45Speaker 6: You're not very bright, mister. How do you suppose I
- 22:47Speaker 6: know about your partner?
- 22:50Speaker 3: How did you?
- 22:51Speaker 6: We found him where you met the Pawnees. He was dead.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Dead? Yeah.
- 23:00Speaker 6: You want me to.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Tell you about it? Well, what's there to tell?
- 23:05Speaker 6: They got mad and killed him. He died slow, mister.
- 23:10Speaker 6: Real slow.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Nick, don't you.
- 23:13Speaker 6: That's right. He wasn't very pretty when we found him.
- 23:16Speaker 3: I don't want to hear about it.
- 23:17Speaker 6: He was your partner. Might happen to you too. I
- 23:19Speaker 6: said I don't want to hear about it. Well, I'm
- 23:20Speaker 6: going to tell you about it anyway.
- 23:21Speaker 3: First of all, they... No, don't tell me.
- 23:23Speaker 6: I can't stand that. I hate that. All right, then
- 23:26Speaker 6: listen to me.
- 23:26Speaker 9: If you start shooting, I'm not going to kill you
- 23:29Speaker 9: and neither are my friends. But the Pawnees will come
- 23:31Speaker 9: and they'll think you tried to fool them. They'll do
- 23:33Speaker 9: worse things to you than they did to him.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I couldn't go through that.
- 23:38Speaker 6: We'll see what they do. All right, give me your gun.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Come on, take it. I don't care what happens as
- 23:44Speaker 3: long as they don't get me. All right.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Now go get your horse, mister. And hurry. Or none
