- 0:00Paul said in Galatians chapter 3, verse 10,
- 0:04but those who depend on the law to make them right with God
- 0:08are under his curse. For the scriptures say,
- 0:13cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all these
- 0:17commands that are written in God's book of the
- 0:20law. Consequently, it is clear that
- 0:25no one can ever be right with God by trying to keep the law.
- 0:30Are you trying to be right with God by keeping
- 0:33the law? Join us today as we unpack this
- 0:37chapter in Galatians chapter 3. Welcome to
- 0:41the Daily Audio Torah. Today is September 17th. Now let's
- 0:46continue our journey reading through the entire Bible in one year.
- 0:50This week we are reading from the New Living Translation for the Old Testament and
- 0:54for The New Testament.
- 1:01Deuteronomy 28:21-41.
- 1:08The Lord will afflict you with diseases until none of you are left
- 1:12in the land you are about to enter and occupy. The Lord
- 1:16will strike you with wasting diseases, fever, and inflammation,
- 1:20with scorching heat and drought, and with blight and mildew.
- 1:25These disasters will pursue you until you die.
- 1:29The skies above will be as unyielding as bronze, and the earth
- 1:32beneath will be as hard as iron. The Lord will
- 1:36change the rain that falls on your land into powder,
- 1:39and dust will pour down from the sky until you are destroyed.
- 1:44The Lord will cause you to be defeated by your enemies,
- 1:48You will attack your enemies from one direction, but you will scatter from
- 1:52them in 7. You'll be
- 1:56an object of horror to all the kingdoms of the earth.
- 2:00Your corpses will be food for all the scavenging birds
- 2:03and wild animals, and no one will be there to chase them away.
- 2:07The Lord will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors,
- 2:11scurvy, and the itch. From which you cannot be cured.
- 2:17The Lord will strike you with madness, blindness, and panic.
- 2:21You will grope around in broad daylight like a blind person groping
- 2:25in the darkness, but you will not find your way.
- 2:29You will be oppressed and robbed continually, and no one will come to
- 2:33save you. You will be
- 2:36engaged to a woman, but another man will sleep
- 2:40with her. You will build a house, but someone else will live in it.
- 2:44You will plant a vineyard, but you will never enjoy its fruit.
- 2:49Your ox will be butchered before your eyes, but you
- 2:53will not eat a single bite of the meat. Your donkey will be
- 2:57taken from you, never to be returned. Your sheep and goats will be
- 3:01given to your enemies, and no one will be there to help you.
- 3:05You will watch as your sons and daughters are taken away as
- 3:09slaves. Your heart will break for them,
- 3:12but you won't be able to help them.
- 3:17A foreign nation you have never heard about will eat
- 3:21the crops you worked so hard to grow. You will suffer under
- 3:25constant oppression and harsh treatment. You will
- 3:29go mad because of all the tragedy you see around
- 3:33you. The Lord will cover your knees and legs with
- 3:37incurable boils. In fact, you'll be covered from head to
- 3:42foot. The Lord will exile you and your king
- 3:45to a nation unknown to you and your ancestors. There in
- 3:49exile, you will worship gods of wood and stone.
- 3:53You will become an object of horror, ridicule, and mockery among all
- 3:58the nations to which the Lord sends you. You will plant
- 4:02much but harvest little. For locusts will eat your crops.
- 4:07You will plant vineyards and care for them, but you will not drink
- 4:11the wine or eat the grapes, for worms will destroy the vines.
- 4:15You will grow olive trees throughout your land,
- 4:19but you will never use the olive oil, for the fruit will drop before it
- 4:23ripens. You will have sons and daughters, but you will
- 4:26lose them, for they will be led away into captivity.
- 4:35Isaiah 25:1-28:13.
- 4:45O Lord, I, Isaiah, will honor and praise Your name,
- 4:49for You are my God. You do such wonderful things.
- 4:53You planned them long ago, and now You have accomplished them.
- 4:57You turn mighty cities into heaps of ruins.
- 5:00Cities with strong walls are turned to rubble.
- 5:03Beautiful palaces in distant lands disappear and will
- 5:08never be rebuilt. Therefore, strong nations will declare your glory.
- 5:12Ruthless nations will revere you.
- 5:15But to the poor, O Lord, you are a refuge from
- 5:19the storm. To the needy in distress,
- 5:23You are a shelter from the rain and heat.
- 5:27For the oppressive acts of ruthless people are like a storm beating
- 5:31against a wall, or like the relentless heat of
- 5:35the desert. But you silence the roar of foreign nations;
- 5:39you cool the land with the shade of a cloud.
- 5:42So the boastful songs of ruthless people are
- 5:46stilled. In Jerusalem,
- 5:51the Lord Almighty will spread a wonderful feast for everyone around
- 5:55the world. It will be a delicious feast of good
- 5:58food with clear, well-aged wine and choice beef.
- 6:03In that day, He will remove the cloud of gloom,
- 6:07the shadow of death that hangs over the earth. He will
- 6:11swallow up death forever. The Sovereign
- 6:15Lord will wipe away all tears. He will remove
- 6:18forever all insults and mockery against His land
- 6:22and people. The Lord has spoken.
- 6:27In that day the people will proclaim, This is
- 6:31our God! We trusted in Him and He saved us. This is
- 6:34the Lord in whom we trusted! Let us rejoice in
- 6:38the salvation He brings. For the Lord's good hand will rest on Jerusalem.
- 6:43Moab will be crushed like trampled straw and left to
- 6:47rot. God will push down Moab's people as
- 6:51a swimmer pushes down water with his hands.
- 6:54He will end their pride and all their evil works. The high
- 6:58walls of Moab will be demolished and ground to dust.
- 7:03In that day, everyone in the land of Judah will sing this song: Our
- 7:08city is now strong; we are surrounded by the walls of God's
- 7:12salvation. Open the gates to all who are righteous; allow
- 7:16the faithful to enter. You will keep in perfect peace
- 7:20all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed
- 7:24on you. Trust in the Lord always, for the Lord
- 7:27God is the eternal Rock. He humbles
- 7:31the proud and brings the arrogant city to the dust.
- 7:34Its walls come crashing down. The poor and
- 7:38oppressed trample it underfoot. But for those who are righteous,
- 7:42the path is not steep and rough. You are a God
- 7:46of justice, and you smooth out the road ahead of them. Lord,
- 7:50we love to obey your laws. Our heart's desire
- 7:54is to glorify your name. All night long
- 7:58I search for you. Earnestly I seek for God.
- 8:01For only when you come to judge the earth will people turn from wickedness
- 8:06and do what is right. Your kindness to
- 8:10the wicked does not make them do good. They keep
- 8:14doing wrong and take no notice of the Lord's majesty.
- 8:18O Lord, they do not listen when you threaten.
- 8:22They do not see your upraised fist.
- 8:26Show them your eagerness to defend your people.
- 8:30Perhaps then they will be ashamed. Let your fire consume
- 8:34your enemies. Lord, you will grant us peace,
- 8:38for all we have accomplished is really from you.
- 8:42O Lord our God, others have ruled us, but we worship
- 8:46you alone. Those we served before are
- 8:50dead and gone. Never again will they return.
- 8:53You attacked them and destroyed them, and they are long forgotten.
- 8:57We praise You, Lord. You have made our nation great.
- 9:01You have extended our borders. Lord, in distress
- 9:06we searched for You.
- 9:10We were bowed beneath the burden of Your discipline. We were like
- 9:14a woman about to give birth, writhing and crying out in pain.
- 9:18When we are in Your presence, Lord, we too writhe in agony,
- 9:22but nothing comes of our suffering. We have done nothing
- 9:26to rescue the world. No one has been born to populate the
- 9:29earth. Yet we have this assurance: those
- 9:33who belong to God will live. Their bodies will rise again.
- 9:39Those who sleep in the earth will rise and
- 9:43sing for joy. For God's light of
- 9:47life will fall like dew on his people
- 9:51in the place of the dead.
- 9:55Go home, my people, and lock your doors.
- 9:58Hide until the Lord's anger against your enemies has passed.
- 10:02Look, the Lord is coming from heaven to punish the people
- 10:06of the earth for their sins. The earth will no longer hide
- 10:09those who have been murdered. They will be brought out for
- 10:13all to see. In that
- 10:17day, the Lord will take his terrible swift sword and punish Leviathan,
- 10:21the swiftly moving serpent, the coiling, writhing serpent,
- 10:25the dragon of the sea. In that day we will sing of
- 10:29the pleasant vineyard. I, the Lord, will watch over it and tend its fruitful
- 10:34vines. Each day I will water them. Day and night
- 10:38I will watch to keep enemies away. My anger against
- 10:42Israel will be gone. If I find briars
- 10:45and thorns bothering her, I will burn them up.
- 10:48These enemies will be spared only if they surrender and
- 10:52beg for peace and protection. The time is coming
- 10:55when My people will take root. Israel will
- 10:59bud and blossom and fill the whole earth with
- 11:04her fruit. Has the Lord punished Israel in the
- 11:08same way He has punished her enemies? No, for He devastated
- 11:12her enemies, But he has punished Israel only a little.
- 11:16He has exiled her from her land as though blown away in a
- 11:21storm from the east. The Lord did this to purge away Israel's
- 11:25sin. When he had finished, all the pagan altars
- 11:29will be crushed to dust. There won't be an Asherah
- 11:33pole or incense altar left standing. Israel's fortified
- 11:37cities will be silent and empty. The houses abandoned,
- 11:41the streets covered with grass. Cattle will graze there,
- 11:45chewing on twigs and branches. The people are
- 11:48like the dead branches of a tree, broken off and used for
- 11:52kindling beneath the cooking pots. Israel is a foolish
- 11:56and stupid nation, for its people have turned away
- 12:00from God. Therefore, the one who made them will show them no
- 12:04pity or mercy. Yet the time will come when
- 12:07the Lord will gather them together one by one like hand-picked
- 12:12grain. He will bring them to his great
- 12:16threshing floor, from the Euphrates River in the east to the Brook
- 12:19of Egypt in the west. In that day, the great
- 12:22trumpet will sound. Many who were dying in
- 12:26exile in Assyria and Egypt will return
- 12:30to Jerusalem. To worship the Lord on
- 12:34His holy mountain.
- 12:38Destruction is certain for the city of Samaria, the pride
- 12:42and joy of the drunkards of Israel. It sits in a
- 12:46rich valley, but its glorious beauty will suddenly disappear.
- 12:50Destruction is certain for that city, the pride of
- 12:54a people brought low by wine. For the Lord will send
- 12:58the mighty Assyrian army against it. Like a mighty
- 13:02hailstorm and a torrential rain, they will burst upon
- 13:05it and dash it to the ground. The proud city of
- 13:09Samaria, the pride and joy of the drunkards of Israel,
- 13:13will be trampled beneath its enemies' feet. It sits in
- 13:17a fertile valley, but its glorious beauty will suddenly disappear.
- 13:21It will be greedily snatched up as an early fig
- 13:26is hungrily picked and eaten. Then at last the Lord Almighty will himself
- 13:30be Israel's crowning glory. He will
- 13:34be the pride and joy of the remnant of his people.
- 13:38He will give a longing for justice to their judges.
- 13:42He will give great courage to their warriors who stand at
- 13:47the gates. Now, however,
- 13:50Israel is being led by drunks. The priests and prophets
- 13:53reel and stagger from beer and wine. They make stupid
- 13:57mistakes as they carry out their responsibilities.
- 14:02Their tables are covered with vomit. Filth is everywhere.
- 14:06They say, who does the Lord think we are? Why does he speak
- 14:10to us like this? Are we little children barely old enough to talk?
- 14:14He tells us everything over and over again, a line at
- 14:19a time, in very simple words.
- 14:23Since they refuse to listen, God will speak to them through
- 14:27foreign oppressors who speak an unknown language.
- 14:30God's people could have rest in their own land if they would only
- 14:34obey Him, but they will not listen. So the Lord will spell
- 14:38out His message for them again, repeating it over and over,
- 14:42a line at a time, in very simple words.
- 14:46Yet, they will stumble over this simple,
- 14:48straightforward message. They will be injured,
- 14:51trapped, and captured.
- 14:57Galatians 3:10-22.
- 15:01But those who depend on the Law to make them right with God are under
- 15:05his curse. For the Scriptures say, cursed is
- 15:09everyone who does not obey and observe all these
- 15:13commands that are written in God's book of the Law.
- 15:16Consequently, it is clear that no one can ever be
- 15:21right with God by trying to keep the Law.
- 15:27For the Scriptures say, it is through faith that
- 15:31a righteous person has life. How different from this way
- 15:35of life is the way of Law, which says, if you wish to find life
- 15:40by obeying the Law, you must obey all of its commands.
- 15:44But Christ has rescued us from
- 15:47the curse pronounced by the Law.
- 15:51When He was hung on the cross, He took upon Himself the curse for
- 15:55our wrongdoings.
- 15:58For it is written in the Scriptures, cursed is everyone who is hung upon
- 16:03a tree. Through the work of Christ Jesus,
- 16:06God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing
- 16:10He promised to Abraham. And we Christians
- 16:15receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.
- 16:18Dear brothers and sisters, here's an example from everyday life.
- 16:23Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement,
- 16:27so it is in this case. God gave the promise
- 16:31to Abraham and his child. And notice that it
- 16:35doesn't say the promise was to his children, as if it meant many
- 16:39descendants, but the promise was to his child, and that,
- 16:43of course, means Christ. This is what
- 16:47I am trying to say: the agreement God made with Abraham could not
- 16:51be canceled 430 years later when God
- 16:55gave the Law to Moses. God would be breaking
- 16:59his promise. For if the inheritance could be received only
- 17:03by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of
- 17:07accepting God's promise. But God gave it to Abraham as
- 17:11a promise. Well then, why was the law given?
- 17:15It was given to show people how guilty they are.
- 17:20But this system of law was to last only until
- 17:24the coming of the child to whom God's promise was made.
- 17:28And there is further difference.
- 17:31God gave his laws to angels to give to Moses,
- 17:35who was the mediator between God and the people. Now,
- 17:38a mediator is needed if 2 people enter into an
- 17:42agreement, but God acted on his own when
- 17:46he made his promise to Abraham.
- 17:51Well then, Is there a conflict between God's Law and
- 17:55God's promises? Absolutely not.
- 17:59If the Law could have given us new life, we could have been
- 18:03made right with God by obeying it. But the Scriptures have declared
- 18:07that we are all prisoners of sin.
- 18:12So the only way to receive God's promise is to
- 18:15believe in Jesus Christ.
- 18:23Psalm 61:1-8.
- 18:28O God, listen to my cry; hear my prayer.
- 18:32From the ends of the earth I will cry to You for help,
- 18:36for my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to
- 18:39the towering rock of safety,
- 18:42for You are my safe refuge. A fortress
- 18:46where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in
- 18:50your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings.
- 18:54For you have heard my vows, O God; you have given
- 18:58me an inheritance reserved for those who fear your name.
- 19:02Add many years to the life of the king; may
- 19:06his years span the generations. May he
- 19:10reign under God's protection forever. Appoint your
- 19:14unfailing love and faithfulness to watch over him.
- 19:18Then I will always sing praises to your name as
- 19:22I fulfill my vows day after day.
- 19:29Proverbs 23:17-18.
- 19:33Don't envy sinners, but always continue to fear the
- 19:37Lord. For surely you have a future ahead of you. Your hope will
- 19:41not be disappointed.
- 19:44I want to speak to you today from our reading in Galatians chapter
- 19:483, and it states some things very plainly
- 19:53and very clearly, beginning in verse 10.
- 19:57But those who depend on the law to make them right with
- 20:00God are under his curse. For the Scriptures say,
- 20:04cursed is everyone who does not observe and
- 20:08obey all these commands that are written in God's book of
- 20:11the law. And in fact, in our reading today from Deuteronomy
- 20:15chapter 28, we read about all these
- 20:19different curses that would come upon the children of Israel
- 20:23if they did not obey the law of God.
- 20:28All kinds of curses are listed about growing olive trees
- 20:31and you don't get to use the olive oil, about having sons and daughters but
- 20:35they'll go away into captivity, you'll plant much and harvest
- 20:39little, you'll become an object of horror and ridicule and mockery,
- 20:42all these different curses because they did not obey the
- 20:46law. So Paul is making a very strong
- 20:50case that you cannot depend upon the law to make you
- 20:53right with God. And that if you do try to make
- 20:57yourself right with God by obeying the law, you come under his curse.
- 21:01Christ rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law.
- 21:05When he hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing.
- 21:10So then later on in the same chapter, Paul asked, well then,
- 21:14why was the law given? What is the purpose of the
- 21:18law? The purpose of the law is not to make us righteous with
- 21:22God. Because we can't, uh,
- 21:26by obeying or trying to obey the law, we will fall short.
- 21:30What is the answer to that question? Paul answers. He says
- 21:34it was given to show people how guilty they are.
- 21:38It's like looking in the mirror. When you read the Word of God,
- 21:42you're looking in the mirror at yourself, and oh by golly,
- 21:46I've got some dirt on my face. But this system of law
- 21:50was to last only until the coming of the child to whom
- 21:53God's promise was made.
- 21:57Now I'd like to share with you a short chapter from
- 22:01the book The Divine Romance written by Jean Edwards,
- 22:07and it is chapter 43. It's very short,
- 22:11but this chapter is talking about what transpired
- 22:16at the moment that Jesus was crucified
- 22:20on the cross. What was accomplished? What was
- 22:24happening in the spiritual realm when He
- 22:27was dying on the cross?
- 22:31And it fits in with our reading today from Galatians,
- 22:37but before I read that chapter, there's another scripture I want to share,
- 22:41and this is from Colossians chapter
- 22:462, and I want to begin in
- 22:49verse 14. He, that is Christ,
- 22:53canceled the record of the charges brought
- 22:57against us, and He took it away by nailing it to
- 23:01the cross. So how would I know that I'm a sinner
- 23:05unless I read the Ten Commandments and realize, oh,
- 23:09Thou shalt not covet, and I'm coveting. I want something
- 23:13that belongs to somebody else, and it's not mine, and I'm jealous, and I want
- 23:16what they have. Um, and that's coveting. And thou shalt not covet.
- 23:20I wouldn't know that that's a sin except that the Ten Commandments
- 23:23tells me that that is a sin. And so that's a
- 23:28charge brought against me. This is what makes me unholy. It makes me impure,
- 23:32unclean, a sinner. That I've sinned.
- 23:36And so it's a record of charges, my sin, the record of charges
- 23:41against me. He canceled it and took it away
- 23:44by nailing those charges, my sin,
- 23:48to the cross. Verse 15, in this way He,
- 23:52that is Jesus, disarmed the spiritual
- 23:56rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by
- 24:00His victory over them on the cross.
- 24:05Don't let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink or
- 24:10for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies
- 24:14or Sabbaths, for these rules are only
- 24:18shadows of the reality yet to come,
- 24:22and Christ Himself is that reality.
- 24:30So this is from Colossians chapter 2, verses 14 through 17.
- 24:35Now, um, now I want to read this chapter
- 24:39because it really captures the essence and the
- 24:42heart of what we just read in Galatians chapter 3 today.
- 24:49Once more, a nail was pressed deep into the other wrist.
- 24:53Once more the soldier drew his arm in a mighty upward swing,
- 24:57and once more the Lord froze time and eternity in
- 25:01their journey. At that very instant, one of the angels
- 25:04arrived at the base of Mount Sinai and began to sort furiously
- 25:09through the stones and rocks. He paused. There they lay,
- 25:12smashed, long forgotten— the stone tablets
- 25:16of the Commandments and the Law of Moses.
- 25:19Quickly, the angel clutched them to his bosom,
- 25:22turned, and darted again toward Jerusalem's
- 25:26Holy Temple. Arriving at the temple courtyard, this same angel went
- 25:31straight into the Holy of Holies. Terrified yet obedient,
- 25:35he lifted the mercy seat, reached inside the box of hammered
- 25:39gold, and brought forth the sacred copy of the law.
- 25:43He then gathered that from within the temple every rule Every
- 25:47regulation, every ordinance that had ever been penned,
- 25:52proclaimed, or dreamed of. All law,
- 25:56all legalism, all bondage.
- 26:00The angel was about to depart when he heard again the Lord's voice
- 26:04within him. Turning, he called forth all ritual
- 26:09of all worship. Once more he would have departed, but turned again
- 26:13at the prodding of his glowing spirit. He now called forth
- 26:16all observance of all holy days. Finally, he called
- 26:20forth even the Sabbath.
- 26:24You are but pictures of my Lord today,
- 26:27pictures, types, and shadows of my Lord.
- 26:32End. At last he left the temple,
- 26:36only to be stopped again. He breathed hard,
- 26:40turned, and called forth even the temple.
- 26:43You too. For even you are but a picture of my Lord.
- 26:48Today the picture ends. Now he
- 26:52rose high above the earth, and in a voice that
- 26:56reached all ends of times, he commanded
- 26:59every rule, regulation, ritual,
- 27:03decree, and ordinance that had ever been observed
- 27:06by any religion ever practiced upon the face of the earth to
- 27:10come forth once more. The burdened angel
- 27:14plunged downward through the skies into time. He arrived
- 27:17just in time to lay his profound burden into
- 27:22the bosom of his Lord. He stepped back.
- 27:26All this ends today.
- 27:30The hammer smashed against the nail,
- 27:33and with it, Allah All rules,
- 27:38all ordinances, all holy days, and all
- 27:41ritual were crucified upon the cross of Jesus Christ
- 27:47our Lord. And so
- 27:51I come back to Colossians chapter 2, verse 14. I'm going to read it
- 27:55now in the New King James Version. It's slightly different than the New
- 27:59Living Translation, that Jesus having wiped
- 28:03out the handwriting of requirements that
- 28:07was against us, which was contrary to us,
- 28:11and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed
- 28:15it to the cross.
- 28:19And so just trying to follow rituals
- 28:24and rules and regulations and routines
- 28:29That does not save us. That is not what it is to walk
- 28:33by faith and to have a true heart relationship
- 28:38with Jesus. He calls us to an intimate love
- 28:42relationship with Him.
- 28:45So break out of the routine, break out of the rote,
- 28:50break out of the religious ritual, and Press
- 28:55in to have true heart relationship
- 28:59with Jesus. Spend time with Him.
- 29:03Listen to Him. Listen to His whispers.
- 29:07Take time to get away and to be alone with
- 29:11the Lover of your soul. Have a
- 29:15blessed day, and we will see you tomorrow. Shalom.
- 29:21Yevrekka Adonai,
- 29:31vehishmerekka
- 29:39Yahweh Adonai.
- 29:47And now he look up,
- 29:51we couldn't make up.
- 29:56He's so hard on
- 30:00us. And now he
- 30:06look up, we say look
- 30:12up.
- 30:24The Aaronic Blessing from Numbers chapter 6,
- 30:2724 to 26.
- 30:30Adonai bless you and keep you.
- 30:33Adonai make his face to shine upon you and be
- 30:37gracious to you. Adonai lift up his countenance
- 30:42upon you and give you peace.
