- 0:17Speaker 1: William Lee Golden from the Oak Ridge Boys joining us
- 0:20Speaker 1: on the phone right now. They've got a new album
- 0:22Speaker 1: coming out. We're going to talk about that, Buried Treasures.
- 0:24Speaker 1: But you're going to be in Sioux Falls on September 13th.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We're excited to have you here.
- 0:28Speaker 2: The Oak Ridge Boys are excited to be coming to
- 0:31Speaker 2: Sioux Falls.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We are excited to have you here as well. And again,
- 0:35Speaker 1: how long have the Oak Ridge boys been together and
- 0:38Speaker 1: making amazing music? It's a minute now, isn't it?
- 0:40Speaker 2: It is. I joined first in 1965. And the group
- 0:46Speaker 2: actually started in the early 40s. But I joined first.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Dwayne Allen, our great lead singer, he joined about a
- 0:54Speaker 2: year and a half later in the spring of 1966.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I love it. He's been singing lead for the Oak
- 1:04Speaker 2: Ridge Boys now for 60 years. He's a guy from
- 1:08Speaker 2: Texas that majored in music and choral arrangements and has been, like,
- 1:14Speaker 2: as a lead singer, one of the backbones of our
- 1:17Speaker 2: group for 60 years now. I sing the baritone harmonies
- 1:22Speaker 2: and sing on a few of the other songs. Thank
- 1:25Speaker 2: God for kids and trying to love two women. Some
- 1:28Speaker 2: of those, but... You know, we've got a couple of
- 1:31Speaker 2: young guys in our group. Young Ben James, he joined
- 1:36Speaker 2: us when he was 28 years old here, three years ago.
- 1:39Speaker 2: And so he's a new father, got a new baby
- 1:43Speaker 2: boy that was born in January this year. So he
- 1:47Speaker 2: and his wife. And then we got this young guy,
- 1:51Speaker 2: Aaron Lee McCoon, singing bass with us now. Our lead singer,
- 1:56Speaker 2: I mean, our bass singer, Richard Sterling. He had to
- 2:00Speaker 2: get off the road back in early last year. And
- 2:05Speaker 2: so we've had a couple of young bass singers. Tim
- 2:09Speaker 2: Duncan last year helped us out. And then this young guy,
- 2:13Speaker 2: Aaron Lee McCoon, is one of the greatest bass singers
- 2:16Speaker 2: I've ever sang with or heard in my life. He's
- 2:20Speaker 2: an incredible bass singer, but he's a young guy, young kid,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and grew up with our music. And he was born
- 2:28Speaker 2: about the time Elvira was released. That's awesome. So, kind
- 2:33Speaker 2: of interesting.
- 2:34Speaker 1: That was a big hit for you guys, Elvira. But
- 2:36Speaker 1: you have so many songs that were big hits and
- 2:39Speaker 1: amazing music over the years from the Oak Ridge Boys.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Is there a song that would be one of your
- 2:44Speaker 1: favorite songs to sing?
- 2:46Speaker 2: Well, Elvira, we mentioned that. That song has been, like
- 2:50Speaker 2: you said, it's been the biggest song we've ever had.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And it changed a lot of things with the Oak
- 2:55Speaker 2: Ridge Boys. kind of took us from being a regular
- 3:00Speaker 2: country four-part harmony singing group into more of a household
- 3:04Speaker 2: name at that time. In 1981, we recorded it. The
- 3:10Speaker 2: song was 16 years old, actually, when we recorded it.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I had heard it by the original writer, Dallas Razor,
- 3:18Speaker 2: on his album. Charlie Rich had it on Behind Closed
- 3:21Speaker 2: Doors album. And Kenny Rogers, the first edition, had it
- 3:26Speaker 2: on Something's Burning album. Rodney Crowell had cut the song,
- 3:31Speaker 2: but the Oak Ridge Boys put a different twist on it.
- 3:34Speaker 2: They took it back to the old doo-wop type groups
- 3:38Speaker 2: and the early pop groups like the Spinners and Coasters
- 3:44Speaker 2: with step-out lines, bass singers, you know, like... The producer,
- 3:50Speaker 2: Ron Chancey, wanted Joe Bonzo, our tenor, to sing the
- 3:54Speaker 2: lead on it. They wanted Richard Servin, our bass singer,
- 3:57Speaker 2: to do the step-out lines with the oom-pah-pah, oom-pah-pah, maow-maow.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And that set the song apart, man. When we sang
- 4:06Speaker 2: it the first time and spoke in Washington, I've never
- 4:10Speaker 2: heard a crowd or riff like that in my life
- 4:13Speaker 2: at the end of that song.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And just imagine, they didn't even realize that they were
- 4:17Speaker 1: a part of history, getting a chance to see you
- 4:19Speaker 1: guys make that song your own and turn it into
- 4:22Speaker 1: what it is. It's the biggest hit. That's the biggest,
- 4:24Speaker 1: your version is the biggest version of Elvira by far.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it was in 1981. It went to the top
- 4:33Speaker 2: of country charts on record time, spilled over into the
- 4:37Speaker 2: middle of the road and did rock and roll. And
- 4:41Speaker 2: everybody was singing Oom-Pum-Pum-Mow-Mow in the summer of 1981 when
- 4:45Speaker 2: it was being played on all music formats, basically.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Absolutely. Well, we are excited to have you in Sioux Falls,
- 4:53Speaker 1: which is part of what we're going to talk about,
- 4:55Speaker 1: but also, we've got to make sure we mention Buried Treasures.
- 4:58Speaker 1: What is it like putting out a new album now,
- 5:00Speaker 1: compared to back in 81 when Elvira was new? How
- 5:04Speaker 1: has the music industry changed in your eyes? Has it
- 5:07Speaker 1: changed quite a bit?
- 5:08Speaker 2: Well, the music itself is the same form of music,
- 5:14Speaker 2: just new players and young guys with the same feel,
- 5:17Speaker 2: but Digital technology has basically changed everything in music and video.
- 5:25Speaker 2: So I say that that form right there has certainly
- 5:31Speaker 2: revolutionized the way we get our music. And it's downloaded
- 5:35Speaker 2: now rather than hard album covers or CD covers. Anyhow,
- 5:42Speaker 2: that's what I feel like. But for us, music, there's
- 5:46Speaker 2: always evolving music and new young singers that are incredible.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Like Ellie Langley, one of my favorite new singers for
- 5:56Speaker 2: the past year or so. In fact, she went up
- 5:58Speaker 2: to the Oak Ridge Boys singing a song that we
- 6:01Speaker 2: had recorded several years ago called I Wish You Could
- 6:05Speaker 2: Have Turned My Head and Left My Heart Alone. And
- 6:09Speaker 2: she said she wanted to record with us. Well, uh, Man,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I would love to record. I'd love to harmonize with
- 6:17Speaker 2: Ellie Langley.
- 6:18Speaker 1: That would be awesome.
- 6:20Speaker 2: She's the hottest thing in Nashville.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Well, we are excited to have you.
- 6:24Speaker 2: We're excited to be coming to South Dakota again.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we're excited to have you here. And again, it's
- 6:30Speaker 1: coming up on September 13th. It's just going to blink
- 6:32Speaker 1: our eyes and you'll be here. And you're going to
- 6:35Speaker 1: be here and your big, beautiful beard is going to
- 6:36Speaker 1: be here. How long have you been growing that beard?
- 6:38Speaker 1: It's been a while, hasn't it?
- 6:39Speaker 2: Well, I lost my razor in 1980 and I still
- 6:43Speaker 2: haven't found it.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Well, don't look for it. It's a good look, William.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Thank you for taking the time to chat. We are
- 6:50Speaker 1: excited to see you.
- 6:51Speaker 2: All right, John. Great to be here on Sunny Radio
- 6:54Speaker 2: on the Sioux Falls Network.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Well, we are excited to have you. Again, William Lee
- 6:57Speaker 1: Golden with the Oak Ridge Boys. They will be in
- 6:59Speaker 1: Sioux Falls at the Washington Pavilion on the 13th of September.
