Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Split voting and overhangs won't do us any good
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There's been a concerted campaign by Don Brash and Nick
- 0:02Speaker 1: Mowbray to get national voters to split their vote, to
- 0:05Speaker 1: engineer an overhang, a move John Key has said would
- 0:09Speaker 1: be the opposite of clever. And so in the weekend Herald,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Don Brash went to press again to say why it's
- 0:14Speaker 1: a good idea, the upshot being that national strength in
- 0:16Speaker 1: the electorates could mean a loss of list seats, which
- 0:19Speaker 1: affects several senior ministers, notably Nicola Willis. And in the
- 0:22Speaker 1: piece on Saturday, he argued that national voters are smart
- 0:26Speaker 1: enough to work out split voting for themselves and and
- 0:28Speaker 1: they don't need John Key telling them how to vote.
- 0:31Speaker 1: The irony is that Mr. Brash and Mr. Mowbray are
- 0:34Speaker 1: also telling people how to vote. Mr. Brash believes it's
- 0:39Speaker 1: the only way for National to save a centre-right coalition,
- 0:42Speaker 1: but there is another way. Be more popular, National in particular.
- 0:46Speaker 1: The other disconnect is that many on the right, in fact,
- 0:49Speaker 1: many in New Zealand, already believe New Zealand has too
- 0:52Speaker 1: many MPs. And here's Mr. Brash and Mr. Mowbray wanting
- 0:55Speaker 1: even more. If there was an overhang, it could get
- 0:58Speaker 1: as high as 124 MPs, and we're paying for these people.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And the other irony is that many on the right
- 1:05Speaker 1: can't stand it when Helen Clark-Buckson, with her tuppence, And
- 1:08Speaker 1: yet here is a former leader of National and ACT
- 1:11Speaker 1: doing exactly the same at the age of 85. What
- 1:13Speaker 1: source for the goose, Mr. Brash, is also source for
- 1:17Speaker 1: the gander? And I would prefer Mr. Brash to zip it, sweetie.
