Transcript
- 0:19None. Hamster with a blunt.
- 0:35Pen knife. They're doing quicker.
- 0:38Welcome back to a Hamster with a Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who
- 0:42Commentary podcast, where today the intrepid explorers Dylan
- 0:48Reese and Luke Malloy face evil rapist Vasilore in the snows of
- 0:54terror. Hello boys.
- 1:01Hang on, we're not doing the ass warriors, you know, or the space
- 1:05virus sound. Quite ice morrowy though, yeah.
- 1:08Now before we go into episode 4, a quick disclaimer.
- 1:12We have had a two week break between episode 3 and 4 because
- 1:16doing 6 in one night is fucking exhausting.
- 1:19May I read you gentlemen an excerpt from The Keys of
- 1:23Marinus, the novelisation written by future producer
- 1:28Philip Hinchcliffe for some reason.
- 1:31OK, it's just a one paragraph but I wasn't with your thoughts
- 1:34on it. He was ex producer by the time
- 1:36the book came out though, right? Oh, for sure.
- 1:38Yeah. It was like me to layout this
- 1:40guy, wasn't it? Well, yeah.
- 1:43Are you having us? Are you going to put the
- 1:44production subtitles on again today please?
- 1:47Certainly, yeah. We have.
- 1:48We never would have known his middle name this summer.
- 1:51I I just need to tell you that when we were doing a thing, came
- 1:55up on my Zoom saying are you playing music?
- 1:58I got to say. Such a professional audio in
- 2:00audio settings. No, that's just what snow sounds
- 2:05like. Stupid computer.
- 2:07OK, here we go. I'm ready.
- 2:10In that instant Vasel leaped for one so large he moved with a
- 2:15astonishing speed. He swept the wooden table aside
- 2:19and was almost on her before Barbara pulled a chair into his
- 2:22path and darted to the opposite corner of the room.
- 2:26Vesar hurled the chair aside and advanced nearer.
- 2:29Barbara grabbed the plate and heaved it full into his face.
- 2:33It broke across his nose, shattering into small pieces.
- 2:36Vasil brushed it off like a family.
- 2:38He lurched towards her again. Cornered.
- 2:41She aimed to blow with the poker, but he caught her arm
- 2:44easily and twisted it from her grip.
- 2:47A hand like a ham bone seized Barbara by the neck and slammed
- 2:51her against the wall, knocking the breath from her body.
- 2:55Then fingers like steel pincers bit into her throat, slowly
- 3:00throttling her. Jesus.
- 3:02Now, I already mentioned this to say, because these target books
- 3:05were in most children's sections in the what do you think about
- 3:08all this sort of violence towards women?
- 3:11I mean, the it's not the only episode in this story that has
- 3:13violence towards women. We'll come to it again in
- 3:16Episode 6. But.
- 3:18I mean, you just keep saying it's a different time, but like
- 3:21Jesus, what were they thinking? Were they trying to figure it
- 3:24out? Is that what's going on here?
- 3:26Like, like what? What?
- 3:27How far could we go? Yeah.
- 3:29No, because I don't think, I don't think television
- 3:31necessarily pushed those sort of boundaries very often and
- 3:35certainly not in family television.
- 3:39I don't think this is the web planet of sexual abuse.
- 3:44Could you explain that? I'm confused.
- 3:46And the web planet is always described as when they really
- 3:51went all out to try things. Right.
- 3:53Yeah. You think they could have gone
- 3:54further? Is that?
- 3:55What you say, and I don't think, I don't think the snows of
- 3:57terror is, is trying anything. And on the other side of thing,
- 4:01it's not Kathy come home either, which was a couple of years
- 4:04later and, you know, was the first thing that showed sort of
- 4:06realistic depictions of like teenage pregnancy and all that
- 4:09stuff as a hard hitting drama. This is just nasty.
- 4:12What I will say is when I watched this earlier today and
- 4:16Vaser pulls the lock across and turns on Barbara and goes haha
- 4:20alone at last and starts advancing on her.
- 4:24I mean my buttock clenched. I felt so uncomfortable, whereas
- 4:28before I was quite having a day old time watching The Keys of
- 4:31Meredith review. This was the first time I felt
- 4:33genuinely fearful for somebody. For a child, though, it's just
- 4:38your typical case of companion in danger.
- 4:41It's only it's only gets shocking when you see it
- 4:44through. Brutalizing Barbara, it's better
- 4:48than raping her. Well, I mean the companions are
- 4:51always in in the terror. I mean, the point of the show is
- 4:54the Doctor says, I think that makes it slightly more scary is
- 4:57the Doctor's not in this episode.
- 4:59So you haven't got that comfort warm blanket that there's
- 5:03usually in Doctor Who, which is the Doctor.
- 5:06It's also the fact it's been done by another human.
- 5:09If it was a giant slug, like you wouldn't think anything of it,
- 5:13but it's because it's another human who has gone out of his
- 5:16way to get this woman alone because he wants to sexually
- 5:20assault her. And a sort of brutish cave
- 5:23money. He's all bloke, isn't.
- 5:26He Yeah, yeah. Burly beardy bloke, but there's
- 5:30a lot, he's sort of physically on her as well when he's sort of
- 5:32handling her. He towers over it, doesn't he?
- 5:35You know, really unpleasant. Obviously I'm trying to push a
- 5:38buttons bit here and and discuss right right at the start of the
- 5:41conversation, but basically asking should we ever go here?
- 5:45No, yeah, no, I agree. Well, should we watch you then?
- 5:50I don't, I don't even I don't like it in the time meddler
- 5:53either. No.
- 5:55No. But I think, I think there's
- 5:57slightly more thought about it there.
- 5:59I think they've gone. This is what the Vikings used to
- 6:02do, so we'll certainly put it in.
- 6:04Whereas I think this isn't any thought.
- 6:07This is just like, oh, this, this is how people act behind
- 6:10closed doors. So this one's more scary, I
- 6:12think. But also in the time meddler as
- 6:14well, you cut away so you don't see the axe and you do see the
- 6:20like the emotional consequences of it because she's, she's just
- 6:22mute, isn't she? And bruise and beaten.
- 6:26And that's easier to take, somehow, than watching a woman
- 6:30being thrown around the room desperately trying to find any
- 6:34weapon to protect herself. And yeah, and it's the
- 6:37companion, isn't it? Well, fellas, I'm sure I've got
- 6:40us off on a very jolly note there.
- 6:42It's a good answer. No, I loved it.
- 6:45Well, maybe not that bit. Someone count us in there.
- 6:48Let's watch this thing. 54321. Off we go down the time tunnel,
- 7:01but it ain't really a time tunnel, is it?
- 7:03No, it's something a little different.
- 7:05Time missed. It's more of a ripping a tear in
- 7:08time and space I'd say. No idea.
- 7:10You boys were so poetic, you know, Time missed, you say.
- 7:14Yeah, yeah, yeah. Can I ask if any of you fellas
- 7:18did in fact, you know, keep to your word and buy the Doctor Who
- 7:22Atlas in the interim now? I didn't, but I'll tell you what
- 7:25I bought today in the William Wilson sale with the main of the
- 7:30board. Yes, we're going to come back.
- 7:33We're going to do a too Hot for TV board special at some point.
- 7:38I've now got 400 episodes planned with you guys alone so.
- 7:43Yeah, you'll be pumping out material for quite some time.
- 7:46I often AM. £5.49 in the Big Finish.
- 7:50So what the William Russell said.
- 7:51People mocked Barbara for wearing that thick jumper in all
- 7:55weathers, but look at her. She's the only one who's
- 7:57sensible now. Well, it's not enough though, is
- 7:59it? She's still dying out there.
- 8:01It's so cold they pass out straight away.
- 8:06Do you know what I noticed was the polystyrene snow in this was
- 8:09more convincing than the polystyrene snow in the Seeds of
- 8:12Doom? Yeah, it actually looks like
- 8:14fucking snow. Black and white holds a
- 8:16multitude of sins. Sorry and boom and boom.
- 8:21Everything looks more. Convincing than.
- 8:25The planetary landscapes and the keys are barred as I've got boom
- 8:28beat. Didn't I?
- 8:31Sorry. Now go on, because I was going
- 8:33to go off topic. I was.
- 8:34Going to give you some trivia. Where does Francis De Wolf, who
- 8:37plays Vaso, appear later in the Hartnell era?
- 8:42I don't know the answer to that. Let's throw it to Luke.
- 8:44No, I don't have any idea. Is it the myth makers?
- 8:47It is. He plays like an M nom.
- 8:50He's hating that as well. No, it just keeps plaguing me.
- 8:58He plays Jeddakaya in The Tomorrow People as well.
- 9:01Oh yeah, You remember it's sort of like a an alien robot that
- 9:06time travels, which should be really fun, but it's very
- 9:09boring. Oh, I remember stroking your
- 9:13hands a bit like this, Luke, when we went to Walthall.
- 9:15You know, you were cold that night, weren't you?
- 9:17He's very tender. I reckon it'd be a fantastic.
- 9:20One where is that music video? He's very tender.
- 9:24Yeah. Where is that fucking music
- 9:25video? XXX.
- 9:28You don't listen to much of mine anymore, but with you 2 on I can
- 9:31guarantee you'll listen to this. And he loves a Marinus.
- 9:34He loves keys. A marinus, the way he rubs her
- 9:36hand there. He's a caring lover.
- 9:38I bet he's got a stinky bell Ember.
- 9:41Oh yeah, he haven't watched it for years.
- 9:42I mean look at those disgusting furs he's got rubbing it up
- 9:45against. There is a quite a lot of skin
- 9:49rubbing in this, isn't it? I'll notice some thigh rubbing
- 9:52later in the episode as well. Yeah, it was the 60s.
- 9:55People were. Weird.
- 9:57Have you ever tried that, Dylan? With either sex?
- 10:00You know it's so cold. Let me rub your thighs.
- 10:04Yes, it's usually followed by I'm calling the police.
- 10:07Angela. Angela.
- 10:11I do like this. I do like this set.
- 10:13Yes, I do. I it does feel like a hot on a
- 10:18on like a snowy mountain top doesn't.
- 10:20It we can't hear the sound effects, but there's like a
- 10:21whistling wind sort of screaming in the back, you know, in the
- 10:26background. Like that I like all these sort
- 10:28of wooden hoodie sets in the heart and liver.
- 10:31I'm thinking of also that one invasion of earth that the women
- 10:36are in. Yeah, have a good heart.
- 10:39Yeah. I like a sort of a living room
- 10:43area wherever you are in Doctor Who.
- 10:45I like, you know, Vivian Faye's cottage in the Stones of Blood,
- 10:48you know, where it's sort of a bit cozy.
- 10:49I mean, this is perhaps not as cozy as it could be this
- 10:52particular. Yeah, I like a posh office.
- 10:55You know, like Day of the Daleks, Perry, that room that
- 10:59Perry gets attacked by the ghost, and like Capaldi's office
- 11:02in Saint Luke's University. I like posh offices.
- 11:06You're earning extremely well looking Malloy, aren't you?
- 11:09Oh no, I'm like how wet in the woods and you like on posh
- 11:12office? What do you imagine They've got
- 11:16offers? With wet girls in them though.
- 11:18I'm only asking this because we almost were orgasmic over the
- 11:21feast that they had in Morpheton City.
- 11:24What were past you imagine? Vasil offers.
- 11:26It's broth, It says it on the info text.
- 11:32What sort of broth do you imagine it is though?
- 11:34But I'm made out of old bones. I was.
- 11:37Going to say shit though isn't it?
- 11:39You was going to say piss. Word.
- 11:40Yeah, well. Knows a Mariner bowl, maybe a
- 11:44Mariners. They all have a big bowl of piss
- 11:46first thing in the morning. But he does have meat though
- 11:50because he pulls the old meat in the bag trick.
- 11:52The old meat in the bag, we've all done it.
- 11:56What the guy asking for it? What the fuck is Vasil going to
- 11:59do with the travel dial and the keys?
- 12:02Like he's slipping out in an old heart in the tundra.
- 12:06Like. That's a great maybe.
- 12:09Maybe he was going to reconfigure the Marinus machine.
- 12:12Or maybe he knows that he can use that to get out of the the
- 12:16old landscape. Well, do you remember we were
- 12:18talking about sort of the Atlas of Marinus in the first part?
- 12:22And we said we like it because we go to so many different
- 12:24places and we see all different weathers and things here.
- 12:27Not only do we see the tundra and this heart, this setting,
- 12:31but he talks about all the villages nearby as well.
- 12:33There's a lot of detail going on.
- 12:36Yeah, it's, it's it's not a community, it's not a city.
- 12:39It's just got all these wildly different places like we do on
- 12:42Earth. Maybe the most realistic vomit.
- 12:45It'll go to like the nearest inn with those travel dolls and go,
- 12:48come on now, let's swap this for some cheese and ham and grapes,
- 12:51you know? But yeah, he actually would have
- 12:54got set up in a crime if he'd used it.
- 12:56What is that line about? We must fatten you up A.
- 13:01Well, maybe he's going to Buck of Anita.
- 13:05He's not a praying mantis. Oh, look at the wolf.
- 13:11Oh, this is so funny. He moves 2 meters and then Altos
- 13:15is just there in front of him. Oh, I found him all right.
- 13:18It's the passing out snow again though, isn't it?
- 13:20Yeah, also very. Cold, Luke.
- 13:22For anybody who's like the Oh, Marco Polo would have looked
- 13:26amazing with these amazing vistas.
- 13:27It would have looked like this, except.
- 13:30It looks. Good it does.
- 13:32Look good, it looks fine, but it's never quite as big.
- 13:34People always just imagine it as like a more sprawling epic than
- 13:37it I. Got to be honest, I imagine the
- 13:39singing sounds as like this sandstorm like.
- 13:43Huge. Twister level sandstorm coming
- 13:46over. It's Margot Heyho tossing sand
- 13:49off off camera. I'm going to say something now,
- 13:52Dylan. Police don't say who is this
- 13:54guy? Fuck off, all right?
- 13:55But compared to the billowing ice of dragon fire, I'll say
- 13:59this. The ice in this story is quite
- 14:01convincing. No Agreed.
- 14:03Agreed. Oh, here we go, all the keys.
- 14:07What does it mean? I think, I think maybe he just
- 14:12collects stuff off the people around here that might be
- 14:14valuable that he thinks he can trade.
- 14:16I think he knows what they are, but he's like, that looks
- 14:19important. I'll have it.
- 14:20Yeah, that is his eyebrows. You know, it's his eyebrows.
- 14:24Yeah, I thought of Turlo. Sticky uppy eyebrows, aren't
- 14:27they? He just doesn't trim him.
- 14:29You must because he hasn't got a trimmer.
- 14:32Are you at the age where your eyebrows grow ridiculously long?
- 14:34No, I've got one right. It's really annoying.
- 14:36I don't know if you can see it. It's a really long hair.
- 14:39It's just one and that's it. The rest of my eyebrows are
- 14:42really short. Oh I have to trim mine all the
- 14:43time. I fucking hate it.
- 14:45It only started in the last couple of years.
- 14:47Do you pluck, Luke? No, I've never heard about this.
- 14:50It happens when you get older. Your.
- 14:52Eyebrows just start growing. Might you?
- 14:56You know, some men shave down there.
- 14:59That's very old, isn't it? I'll give it a trim is it, but I
- 15:02don't want to do all that. Are you trim?
- 15:04Do you? Yeah, shave, shave the pubes,
- 15:07Yeah. I'm like a jungle.
- 15:11Please, someone moved us back to the keys of Mariners.
- 15:14Well. Why we leaving it as a jungle?
- 15:18It's a screaming jungle, Hairy. Man, it's the sexiest thing.
- 15:22I'm always fancy him. Stop shaving golf.
- 15:24Take it all off. No, exactly a little.
- 15:26Bit, yeah. You've got, can you?
- 15:27Imagine right, he's this red like fire.
- 15:30I mean, amazing, but now it's. All the devil God, yeah.
- 15:35How did we get here? Jesus?
- 15:38Do you imagine Basil Trims? No, no, I reckon he has to part
- 15:42his pubes like a curtain before you see his day.
- 15:45But that is the only thing you've got in common with him.
- 15:48Thank you very much. I appreciate that.
- 15:51Here we go, thigh rubbing alert. Yeah, we're back in they're.
- 15:55Very thin legs, so. Yeah, it's Dylan.
- 15:58Is this in the Doctor Who book of lists?
- 16:00How many thigh rubs there are? In I don't know, I'll have to
- 16:03check for you, but if it's not, I'll write a sequel.
- 16:05Where? Where we?
- 16:06I got that book last week because.
- 16:08You. Oh my God, did you Have you read
- 16:10it? I'm not ready, but it's there to
- 16:13like glance to. Put it in the loo, right?
- 16:16But I promise you, you'll have a long poo because by the time you
- 16:18start, you won't stop. No, it's, I mean, I just love
- 16:22shit like that. Have you read the infographical
- 16:311? You know, it's all all different
- 16:33graphs. No.
- 16:36No, I've not come into the two of you this Christmas.
- 16:40That seems a bit like taking the fun out of it though, putting it
- 16:42in charts and data and graphics. Well, I'll let you decide once
- 16:46it's turned up at your house. Here we go.
- 16:48We're getting very nasty now in the heart.
- 16:53Why did he leave her? I mean, is it?
- 16:56I'd stay with Barbara rather than.
- 16:57Go on, didn't he have to go out to look at for Altos?
- 17:00And yeah, didn't he trick him to go out and say they were here
- 17:03earlier? Yeah, that is what happened.
- 17:05Did you see that tiny model of his heart?
- 17:07I think it looks lovely. With a little bit of smoke,
- 17:11he's. Just very far away.
- 17:14Oh God, this is very unpleasant. I wonder if Jacqueline Hill
- 17:18said. Is it a bit much for the kids?
- 17:21I don't. Know no don't forget anyone's
- 17:23saying that he. Literally jumps on her.
- 17:24Now look down on the. He's a bad guy.
- 17:27He's a rapist. He's horrible and she knows she
- 17:32bites him. It's fucking domestic violence.
- 17:34No, he just wants a tickle fight.
- 17:38Oh, OK, he's a big cuddly bear. Really.
- 17:40Is that what you're saying exactly?
- 17:42Good old Ian and I'll toss to the rescue.
- 17:44I like the fact that whenever he's in command, but Vasel,
- 17:47yeah, whenever he sort of got control of the scene, it's Ox
- 17:50and a voice like this, and he's very masculine.
- 17:52And the second like the men are around, he's like, I didn't mean
- 17:55to do it. Please don't like a total wimp.
- 17:58I also like the fact he whole, what's his name?
- 18:02Altos holds Vasor by the scruff of the neck.
- 18:05Like yeah, Altos could can take this guy.
- 18:10Finally, we've got Susan and yeah, Sabitha.
- 18:13God, I love ice. Caves.
- 18:15I love Sabitha. She's got a sort of detached
- 18:18cold iciness about her that I quite like.
- 18:21These are the only two that haven't passed out in the snow
- 18:23as well, even though they've been out there for the long.
- 18:25She's an alien though, Susan, isn't she?
- 18:27And so Sabitha. Yeah, Sabitha is great.
- 18:32Are your Baltos pasta? Have you fellas ever been up in
- 18:34the trees? Go ape.
- 18:37Yeah. Wow.
- 18:38Yeah. Well, you know, they sort of
- 18:40have these huge rope ladders that go between trees.
- 18:43Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:44Enormous ones where you feel like shit.
- 18:46If this actually comes off at the end, I'm dead because I'm so
- 18:49high up. Yeah.
- 18:50Yeah, I. Think they captured that well in
- 18:52a minute with the rope ladder that goes over the ice ravine.
- 18:55No. No.
- 18:57As well as they could. I don't believe that is going
- 19:00over a nice ravine or a nice latrine.
- 19:02They could have jumped that, frankly.
- 19:04It does. It does just remind you the
- 19:06Daleks though, isn't it? But like a really shit version,
- 19:09you know, there's that episode of the Daleks.
- 19:10Someone's saying what? Rope going over 15 fucking
- 19:17minutes. You've got to make sure everyone
- 19:20gets over there. Why did actually notice though?
- 19:22You know the sort of, I don't know what you call it, they're
- 19:26sort of scrunched up plastic they put on the walls when they
- 19:29go along the walls in a minute you can sort of see it billowy
- 19:31in the studio lights. I do.
- 19:33Like the look of The Cave though, like they've obviously
- 19:36tried to make it look icy with the sort of cellophane look,
- 19:39but. It you know what you are right
- 19:41in colour, it would look really. Funny, yeah.
- 19:44But in black and white, I don't know it.
- 19:46I'm sold. Yeah.
- 19:49The Keys of Marinus in colour. I was the T Davis.
- 19:53Is it possible? It's impossible to cut anything
- 19:55from it, as we said. Yeah, what would you take out?
- 19:58You'd have to take out whole subplots.
- 20:02No, you couldn't take. It you could just follow the
- 20:03Doctor's story, so that would that would negate 3 and 4.
- 20:07You know, not even Carolyn Ford's acting prowess can
- 20:10convince that this is a perilous ravine.
- 20:13I'll tell you what, it looks more perilous in the fucking
- 20:15studio. Like it looks like it could be a
- 20:18health and safety issue. Yeah.
- 20:19No, I think I believe it because the bridge is so Ricky.
- 20:25I mean, they're very clever to just have it dark underneath so
- 20:27you can sort of have it's as low as you.
- 20:30Want to? I think it works, no?
- 20:31I know, but it's less than a meter across.
- 20:34Well, true, you could jump it. When he goes, you're stuck here
- 20:39forever in frozen bridge do. You know what?
- 20:42Do you know what it is? You can't get the run up to
- 20:43properly jump it. I think that's the issue.
- 20:47I don't know, I've got springy legs.
- 20:48I reckon I could do that. Yeah, and I'm used to jumping
- 20:52out a perilous situation, so I'll be all right to hop across.
- 20:56I've been out a few bedroom windows in my time.
- 20:59I'm not very jumpy, you know, I'd stay the other side.
- 21:04Actually, no. Do you remember?
- 21:06Oh no, It's going to sound like I'm picking on him now.
- 21:08Do you remember when we went to Walbourne and we took that walk
- 21:10up to the hump and you weren't happy about that walk, was you?
- 21:14No, no, I went. Up for a walk?
- 21:15It's. Not that I don't like.
- 21:16Walking exercise all the time. I just, I need to be prepared
- 21:19that I'm going to do it. That was so worth it.
- 21:21We went to the set of of work. Katie Manning's on a
- 21:25documentary, Point at the Sky. Yeah, that's great stuff.
- 21:28That's where Alastair Fergus was, wasn't it?
- 21:31It was a. Lovely hush.
- 21:33We we need to get somewhere. We need a location visit booked
- 21:36in for next year. Yeah, totally.
- 21:38And when we ran around the Android invasion part, I was
- 21:41very happy then as. Well, if you if you do get
- 21:43Valiant tickets, you can go to Yaz's council estate.
- 21:46I don't. I don't think I can do Valiant
- 21:48though. But we can pretend the spiders
- 21:51are coming after us. Come on now.
- 21:54Oh, there you go. Wait there forever.
- 21:56He goes and he really froze the bridge, don't he?
- 21:59It's a proper fuck you. Yeah, You know, whoever said
- 22:04Aldos is a bit meant to see? I mean, he's a bit sort of RSC,
- 22:07isn't he? Look at him, he's very dainty.
- 22:11Honestly, you don't notice that Hartnell's missing though, do
- 22:14you? Like I never did as a kid, it
- 22:16was pointed out. He's not the lead character at
- 22:19this point. He's like a means to an
- 22:21adventure, but they're all it's, it's, you know, it's a company
- 22:24of actors. It does make these two in the
- 22:26middle slightly more dangerous I think.
- 22:28Like what I was getting at before, you don't have that
- 22:30cuddly magical figure that can get you out of shit.
- 22:34They may as well just call it Doctor Who and friends at this
- 22:37point like it does. Feel intentional at this point.
- 22:40But you definitely feel it when he returns.
- 22:43Yeah, Oh my God, yeah, we will get.
- 22:45He's having a but I'll send you both William Hart to
- 22:50investigate. This is wonderful.
- 22:52Yeah, those furs aren't really sort of all over, are they?
- 22:55Season. Looks like she's got my rug
- 22:57round her. Yeah, and only barely.
- 22:59Yeah, and she's an alien. She doesn't even need it.
- 23:03That's true. Oh yeah, You were saying in the
- 23:04first half, telepathic powers and all these things that she's
- 23:07got, she don't use none of them in this, does she?
- 23:10Useless cow. No these.
- 23:12I love these frozen dudes. They just come out of nowhere.
- 23:16Someone's gone. We haven't really got a monster
- 23:18in this episode, but probably something.
- 23:19What have you got in the cupboards?
- 23:21Oh, we've got some Knights outfits.
- 23:23But we don't have any helmets. We'll just take the bits off the
- 23:25board helmets and put them on them.
- 23:27Have they got names? Do we know if they've got names?
- 23:29Ice Lords. Are they the Ice Lord?
- 23:32No. I've just made that up.
- 23:33No, I think they are. I think they are ice Lords.
- 23:35Is it ice guards maybe? Oh, this is the one.
- 23:38This is the one I wanted you guys to explain to me.
- 23:40That fucking key there in the middle, That block of ice, Who
- 23:43set that up? Well, what they did is they put
- 23:46it in a fish tank, close the fish tank with the thing in the
- 23:50middle with with a bit of cotton hanging it up and they smashed
- 23:54it, smashed the fish tank and left it there and then they put.
- 23:58They put it right next to a pipe of hot water just in case you
- 24:02wanted it. I didn't realize you'd been on
- 24:05Mariners, Dylan, and set up all the keys in all these places.
- 24:08I go on holiday there every year.
- 24:10Do you? What part do you like best?
- 24:11Which sort of landmass? Oh, I love it in the acid sea.
- 24:17It's got to be the velvet. No, I like food more for some
- 24:20city, for the Yeah, they give me a whole roast chicken, you know?
- 24:22Yeah. In like 40 years we might be VR
- 24:27into doctor tooth on It's like marinus.
- 24:30Oh you mate, that is a wonderful form.
- 24:34Because it. You know we're in helmets like
- 24:36Red Dwarf. If technology does go that far,
- 24:39there will be a Doctor Who. Funny.
- 24:40What would be does adapt it for? A say they did that right, and
- 24:44they programmed all of the classic series into VR helmets.
- 24:47Yeah. And we got together what would
- 24:49be the first story we'd go into, Planet Fire.
- 24:55If it. Was I could turn, I'd be
- 24:57straight on that could turn. Oh yes, on those bikes.
- 25:00That on those bikes, in those blue orbs, singing along.
- 25:05I'm not sure if that block of ice there that they're using to
- 25:08get across the bridge is entirely convincing.
- 25:11I'm wondering if money's run out a bit in this episode.
- 25:13Just a little bit. Yeah.
- 25:15Do you know what though? We could take the piss out of
- 25:17the ice guards. But it's another thing about
- 25:19Terry Nation that I love. They just adds a monster and he
- 25:22doesn't forget to add a monster in and that to me makes it
- 25:25Doctor Whoey. I don't think he's writing a
- 25:27script, though. I think he's writing a book.
- 25:31And he goes right what I want to get someone to turn the next
- 25:34page. The actors you know.
- 25:36He's writing an adventure serial.
- 25:38He's writing 25 minutes of action per week and actually
- 25:43wraps up little plots in each episode.
- 25:46But you know, I was really watching this time, especially
- 25:49in the last two episodes today when, you know, when you're in
- 25:51that big grand city that they go to.
- 25:53And I was thinking about the other stories this season
- 25:58because obviously this has about 15 times the amount of settings
- 26:01as any other story this season. And there really isn't any
- 26:04difference. So I just think they spend their
- 26:07money brilliantly in Marinus. They do.
- 26:10I wonder how much of that is down to the director, because
- 26:13nowadays it's down to the line producer and the producer how
- 26:16they spend the money. But it feels like, I mean,
- 26:18you've said this many times before, that you know, Richard
- 26:21Martin has the same budgets and the same hours in the day.
- 26:23As Camfield. As Camfield.
- 26:25So maybe it's more to do with the how the directors choose to
- 26:29spend the money and the producers just keeping an eye on
- 26:30it. He has as much money, sorry, he
- 26:33has more money on the Chase than Canfield had on Dolly Master
- 26:36Plan. Yeah, but we don't know what
- 26:39dogs fun looks like. We've got 2 episodes.
- 26:42We've got 3, three episodes. Sorry.
- 26:45Gone back in you know, there's still 3/4 gone.
- 26:49I was I was happy to on strangers in space that they
- 26:53were big enough. Richard Martin a bit for the web
- 26:55planet. Yeah.
- 26:57That was a great episode. He gets hated too much.
- 26:59The trouble with him is I think there's like maybe 5 minutes of
- 27:03footage in the web planet where he actually achieves what he
- 27:07would have liked to have achieved for the entire thing,
- 27:10and the rest of the time the cameras pointing at the ceiling
- 27:12or something or covered in fucking layers of Vaseline.
- 27:17Which is good. It's a good thing.
- 27:19Well, Nike can't see the action. You can see what's.
- 27:22Going on Susan, sorry, Susan stays on this frozen bridge for
- 27:26ages, which is surely the worst thing you could do because it's
- 27:29only going to heat up the ice. Come on, love.
- 27:35Can I ask you gentlemen, seeing sort of Caroline Ford straddling
- 27:39that bit of ice there, does that do anything for either of you?
- 27:42No. Why not?
- 27:46For an unearthly child, you don't you?
- 27:49Although that block of ice? Come on.
- 27:52I mean, it's actually, it's actually hard to fancy though,
- 27:56because she's meant to be this that younger granddaughter
- 27:59figure. Like she's actually.
- 28:01She's probably 300 years old. So yeah, I know she's more cute
- 28:05than I mean, that is a proper ass shot right there.
- 28:07I'm going to change my answer to yes.
- 28:10John Dory, you remember where we had all those shots of Barbaras
- 28:12ass being grabbed? He likes shooting.
- 28:14He's a. Dirty on it, man.
- 28:16Yeah, missed this summer? It's always summer time for John
- 28:20Gory. Now I'm seeing those high scars
- 28:25up closely. It does rather look like they're
- 28:27in shower curtains. Yeah, but that's all the fashion
- 28:29on Mariners, so don't you worry. About that I do.
- 28:32I do love that excuse. Whenever I talk about terrible
- 28:34fashions on alien planets, it's like, how do you know what they
- 28:37wear on the alien planets? Yeah, shut up.
- 28:40They. Probably think you're dressed
- 28:41ridiculously. I would love the figurine for
- 28:44the monsters on on Mariners. Yeah, the character options,
- 28:48Mariners boxer. Yeah.
- 28:51So, you know, I was really, when I really watched this recently,
- 28:53I was, well, stupid. They all come out The Cave and
- 28:56they all look just like what the hell?
- 29:00Where the Hell's the bridge gone?
- 29:02Where's our mate gone? What you need is the music to
- 29:04just go whack whack like. Yeah, when when Susan crosses, I
- 29:09was like, oh, so they're all gonna have to like hobble across
- 29:11this bridge. I didn't for one second think
- 29:13she was going across to then just reattach the bridge that.
- 29:18That very stupid where he's counting the keys like he's got
- 29:21a stack of money or lovely. You know, I'll do a lot of
- 29:24trading with these, just waiting for them to come in and get them
- 29:27back. I've already forgotten what
- 29:30happens to Vasor, actually. I'd like a Vasor box set to find
- 29:35out why he's so aggressive sometimes and so timid others.
- 29:39I think he had a very disturbing childhood, you know?
- 29:41He lives in a Hut like he's mental.
- 29:47That's when you seen the other. Say to him we got stabbed in the
- 29:50back he deserved. It these frozen dudes, Jed,
- 29:55where do they go? Are they still chasing Ian and
- 29:58Barbara across time and space? Yes.
- 30:01I like to think they are do. They do a double take of like,
- 30:06where did they go? Oh my God, where are we now?
- 30:10It's just like bang, totally new place.
- 30:12I love how Marinus does that. But this is the first time we're
- 30:16bang totally new place in the middle of a story.
- 30:20So it's not like a new little vignette starting.
- 30:22It's like stuff has happened already, what we need to catch
- 30:25up. Yeah, true, Actually, yeah.
- 30:27The name of the actor lying on the floor is Dougie Dean, which
- 30:30is a great name. As I would love to see more of
- 30:35this in Doctor where it is like a little glimpse of next week,
- 30:39yeah, a bit like Series 10 did with Thin ice and.
- 30:42Look at that camera. It never takes his eye off the
- 30:45murder weapon, does it? And you know why?
- 30:47You know what's in there. No.
- 30:50Microchip. Someone has to say.
- 30:53That that's John Gory. You know he's getting ahead of
- 30:55the game. I when I first watched this as I
- 30:59don't know, a 14 year old, that blew my mind.
- 31:03That was like Jonathan Creek done in 1964.
- 31:08I do love all of this though. Sinister gloved hands taking the
- 31:11key out-of-the-box. Yeah, what the hell was going
- 31:14on? I mean, really, what have we
- 31:18gone from? We've gone from in episode 1
- 31:20like pure science fiction, wasn't it?
- 31:22The void and the mission and all that.
- 31:24Episode 2, what was that? The the jungle.
- 31:29The Turkey. The Turkey.
- 31:31So like psychological drama episode 3 was the jungle wasn't
- 31:35it? So like horror that defines
- 31:38almost. Feels like a like a historical
- 31:41to start with until the the Ice Lords show up and it gets
- 31:44slightly more sci-fi. Do you think we're doing sort of
- 31:46touching on everything that Doctor Who can do here?
- 31:48A little bit, to a certain extent, yeah.
- 31:50I don't know whether it was slightly, I don't know whether
- 31:52it was on purpose, but I think it's certainly going well.
- 31:54We can do all these things. Let's fucking do it.
- 31:57Thanks. My question to you gentlemen,
- 31:58I'm throwing a lot at you in this one because Luke's take it
- 32:01over next time is does the keys of Mariners have everything?
- 32:06Yes. Good.
- 32:09It's, it's, it's a simple adventure story, but it
- 32:12certainly gives you a variation of, of tones and paces and even
- 32:19characters. What's can I?
- 32:20Can I throw one last question at you then, because I, I, I, I
- 32:24will step back for the last two episodes and that is compared.
- 32:29No, no, no. I want you guys to.
- 32:31Do the work I'm not doing the work I'm.
- 32:32Not putting my fucking feet up. You think some work you lace as
- 32:35shit just because you don't have a podcast anymore?
- 32:38Come on, what was I saying? Oh yeah.
- 32:40I've gone for like 3 years. People keep bringing this up.
- 32:44I miss those audio reviews so much.
- 32:46Will you just do another 8th doctor box set just for?
- 32:49Me, basically I'm finished big every other week.
- 32:53I'm still doing them. The question is, how does this
- 32:58compare to the other quest stories that we do?
- 33:01So I'm thinking of the Chase. I'm thinking of the Daleks
- 33:03master plan and I will throw in the Keats time season as well,
- 33:08which is a myriad of locations, you know.
- 33:11Well, out of them for the Daleks, Master plan's the worst
- 33:13one. Agreed.
- 33:15Why is that? Why is that?
- 33:19We agree on. Something I don't agree on that.
- 33:23Do you know what it is? The Daleks master plan stuff?
- 33:25The Dalek stuff is fine. The monk isn't as monkey as he
- 33:29is in the in the time meddler so he's like an inferior version of
- 33:34himself. And ancient Egypt is just a ship
- 33:36run around face to Stephen. Like I mean if it shows up it'll
- 33:40be fucking dreadful. Like all those bits.
- 33:43The Dalecky bits are fine and look great but it's like
- 33:46episodes sort of I want to say 5 to 10.
- 33:49Like then stay lost. What about the chase?
- 33:55The chase is just so much fun and it's very hard to not just
- 34:00be swept away with the last five minutes of it.
- 34:03The Hartnell's sort of anger and heartbreak, but also the
- 34:07photograph ending. Ivina, Bob, It's very hard to
- 34:09leave that story and not just feel great.
- 34:11Remember what you said about Ian and Barbara in episode 2 of this
- 34:15when she was like oh we and it's basically 6 episodes of Oh we
- 34:19and the Chase. It's you know what's that starts
- 34:22with? Reading a book and doing the
- 34:24dance. Noise.
- 34:25There's no way to talk about my singing.
- 34:27You know, it's all of that, all the way through.
- 34:29OK, so the last one is key to time.
- 34:32The best season of the 70s. Yeah, I mean, it gets the best
- 34:36balance between drama and comedy of the Tom Baker, really.
- 34:40Record. And it's probably, and it's
- 34:43very, it's, it's the most sort of Doctor Who, he in a way, in a
- 34:50way that it's just like one of the most alien doctors, Tom
- 34:54Baker, going to alien places and doing alien things with an alien
- 34:59companion. And actually, it's not
- 35:01alienating at all. Only the joy of the keys of
- 35:05Mariners could possibly bring the three of us.
- 35:08To. The same conclusion.
- 35:10I'll end the episode there.
