- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Evans Clinic in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And in this hypnosis session
- 0:42it's all about releasing shame. But a particular type of shame
- 0:47and shame can be useful. And I'll explain the
- 0:50circumstances where shame can be useful.
- 0:54Let's say that you've done something mean, you've done
- 0:56something selfish, you've done something cruel or rude, and you
- 1:00reflect on that and you start feeling shame.
- 1:03You start feeling bad about yourself.
- 1:06The function of that kind of shame is to correct and refine
- 1:11future behaviour. It's designed to make you
- 1:13better. And you would want that because
- 1:15if you never had any guilt or shame, some people would call
- 1:19these people sociopaths or psychopaths or narcissists.
- 1:22They're kind of immune to that kind of stuff and they don't
- 1:25feel any guilt or remorse. The fact that you do feel shame
- 1:29when you do these things means that you've got the ability to
- 1:32evolve and adapt. That kind of shame is something
- 1:36beneficial. You can utilize it, but a lot of
- 1:39people are holding on to shame, which is not their shame.
- 1:44Let's say, for example, that you grew up in a very religious
- 1:49family and you were told that certain things were wrong and
- 1:53you should be ashamed for doing certain things.
- 1:56But those things aren't objectively wrong.
- 1:58It's just culturally assigned to being wrong, where you might
- 2:02carry shame for something that another person that didn't have
- 2:06that upbringing has no shame at all.
- 2:09So therefore it can be influenced by the cultural or
- 2:15religious belief systems. Let's say that you were
- 2:18criticized a lot in your childhood, made to feel like you
- 2:22were doing things wrong even if you weren't.
- 2:24As you get older, you might think that someone has to be for
- 2:28to blame. Someone has to be responsible if
- 2:30something goes wrong. And in not everyone thinks that
- 2:34way. Some people think that if
- 2:35something goes wrong, it's an opportunity to learn and get
- 2:37better. Some people are looking to find
- 2:40the one responsible who's responsible for this.
- 2:44And I would say you still get institutions like that.
- 2:48You know, I would say politics and certain institutions, if
- 2:52there's a mistake, they want someone to be fired or resign.
- 2:56They don't want someone to be accountable and take ownership
- 3:00and improve things. So there is a, a blame culture
- 3:03in a lot of different environments.
- 3:05Now. The client that I was working
- 3:06with had a lot of shame, but it wasn't their shame.
- 3:10They were very compassionate, very empathetic, and it almost
- 3:14seemed to me working with this client that part of the reason
- 3:18that they were holding onto the shame is that if they were
- 3:21holding onto the shame, someone else didn't have to absorb it.
- 3:25It was almost protecting the emotional needs of other people.
- 3:29Now, that is not useful if you're holding onto real shame.
- 3:34That is not even something that belongs to you.
- 3:37This uses a metaphor of a mountain of a bag, a backpack
- 3:43that is containing lots of shame and judgement and things like
- 3:46that. And this client felt it
- 3:49difficult to kind of put that down and disregard it and see a
- 3:52future without that shame. But that's the whole point, is
- 3:56to detach. If you're attached to shame
- 3:59through trauma, detach and acceptance is normally the
- 4:03solution to that. So if you are carrying
- 4:07historical shame, maybe guilt, maybe a lot of judgement or
- 4:11criticism, I think you're going to get some value from this
- 4:14session and I would encourage you to think about what would
- 4:17life be like in your future if you only held on to the useful
- 4:22shame and you disregarded all of that shame that isn't yours
- 4:27anyway. Then you'll get more value from
- 4:29this. It was created for a client.
- 4:31This client happened to love trekking and climbing mountains
- 4:35that might not be used. Some of the references will just
- 4:38be visual and you'll have never climbed a mountain like that.
- 4:41But you can have an idea of what it would be like to be on a
- 4:44mountain walking down. But at its core, it's about
- 4:47releasing an emotion that is no longer serving you and perhaps
- 4:51was never yours to belong with. So if you connect to that,
- 4:55great. And if you want something more
- 4:57bespoke and original and created specifically for you, have a
- 5:01look in the description, click the more information.
- 5:04You'll see a big long list of kind of links and descriptions
- 5:07about the show. There's lots of free stuff that
- 5:09I have there, like free downloads and a free course.
- 5:12But if you want to book a free consultation, call with me.
- 5:15There'll be a link to schedule that in the show notes.
- 5:17Or you can visit my website, adamcox.co.uk.
- 5:21For now though, find a quiet, uncomfortable place where you
- 5:24won't be disturbed. Relax and enjoy the session.
- 5:49Take a deep breath in, and as you breathe in, breathe in that
- 5:58slow, long, relaxing breath. And as you exhale, just allow
- 6:06your eyelids to close and as they close, position your body
- 6:11in such a way that makes it easy to let go, to relax.
- 6:21That's it. Breathing in, relaxation and
- 6:33exhaling tension, each breath taking you deeper and deeper.
- 6:44Relax now. I want you to think of an animal
- 6:53that you would consider alert, constantly looking for danger,
- 7:02always on guard. Some people might think of a
- 7:10meerkat looking around, scanning for danger.
- 7:15Whatever comes up for you is exactly the right animal.
- 7:20The kind of animal that will represent how your unconscious
- 7:26mind often feels like scanning for threats, looking for danger,
- 7:38looking for possible conflict. And as you breathe in and
- 7:47breathe out, I want you to see this animal shift and morph into
- 7:56an animal that you consider highly capable but not on edge
- 8:04at all. The kind of animal that can deal
- 8:10with the threat if needed, but doesn't need to spend time
- 8:15scanning for threats because they're just too capable.
- 8:21And as you breathe in and breathe out, see this vigilant
- 8:28on guard animal slowly morphing into the new animal, An animal
- 8:36that represents strength, resourcefulness, capabilities.
- 8:45I want you to get a feeling then you have all of the resources
- 8:52necessary to be able to handle whatever situations come your
- 8:59way. And I want you to get a feeling
- 9:04that sometimes you will experience things that are
- 9:13triggering echoes of your past, not situations in your present.
- 9:22And just imagine, as this animal shifts from one to the other,
- 9:29I'd like you to imagine that if your brain was a piece of
- 9:36software or even hardware, wouldn't it be useful to update
- 9:44it? The latest version, all of the
- 9:49bugs ironed out, new firmware, new versions.
- 9:57And I want you to imagine your brain is connected to the cloud,
- 10:06and as you breathe in and breathe out, each breath is
- 10:13enabling an update. New ways of thinking, new
- 10:17beliefs to enable you to be optimal for where you are now.
- 10:28Not where you were as a child, not when you were vulnerable,
- 10:33had less choices and options. Imagine it's updating to be
- 10:42optimal for now, and just imagine each breath feels like
- 10:53it's downloading a bit more of that update.
- 10:57And sometimes an update can take 20 minutes, half an hour or
- 11:03longer to feel the update happening as your mind drifts
- 11:13off to a memory of a mountain. Not a specific mountain, but a
- 11:23mountain that springs to mind, connected to an empowered
- 11:30feeling. And I want you to imagine that
- 11:35you're on the side of that mountain, wearing whatever
- 11:39clothing is suitable to be there in that environment.
- 11:47Notice how crisp the air is and take a slow breath in and a nice
- 11:54long breath out, really emptying your lungs and awakening the
- 12:00diaphragm. And here on this mountainside,
- 12:05there's nothing to do, nothing to manage, nothing that you need
- 12:10to get right. Perhaps there's a part of you
- 12:17that usually tries to stay alert, tries to monitor, tries
- 12:22to make sure that you don't slip up and just let that part know
- 12:29they can stand down now. It doesn't need to do anything
- 12:34now, because you, in this moment, are already safe.
- 12:45I want you to imagine you've got high up on this mountain and now
- 12:50the way down. Imagine feeling the temperature,
- 12:58seeing the horizon on the distance, the landscape, the
- 13:04terrain. You get a sense that there is
- 13:10nothing to climb here. You're on the descent.
- 13:15And this matters because descents are easier, lighter,
- 13:25freeing, and with each step down, gravity helps you like the
- 13:33mountain itself is carrying you. Even think of how you descend 1
- 13:42foot in front of the other, the speed, the rhythm, the weight
- 13:48shifting from one part of your body to the other.
- 13:54Notice the vastness around you and the sky distant horizons.
- 14:03Imagine you're on your own, no one watching, no one judging,
- 14:11and no one evaluating how you're doing.
- 14:15Just space. And as your body takes this in,
- 14:25I want you to think of a sensation that you sometimes
- 14:29feel when shame there is its head tightness there in the
- 14:36chest. Not because it wanted to and not
- 14:43to punish you, simply because it learned to.
- 14:49Imagine continuing to descend this mountain and imagine you
- 14:55come across a heavy pack resting on the path.
- 15:03And maybe this feels like a big rucksack or a heavy bag,
- 15:13something that someone might carry.
- 15:19You recognize it, but it isn't yours.
- 15:23And I want you to imagine that this big heavy bag is filled
- 15:29with other people's expectations, old judgements and
- 15:38rules that you never agreed to. But the heaviest element of all
- 15:45is the shame that formed when you were small and powerless.
- 15:53And you can tell instinctively that this pack was handed to you
- 16:01a long, long time ago. And maybe there was a time when
- 16:09in order to belong, it depended on you being small.
- 16:16A time when safety depended on self monitoring, keeping
- 16:23yourself in check. Time when you had no choice or
- 16:27choices. But the mountain is quiet now,
- 16:33and spacious enough for a realization to start to connect.
- 16:43What if you weren't failing, you were simply adapting that shame
- 16:51you've been feeling all of these years?
- 16:55It was never an identity. It was a strategy, a coping
- 17:01strategy that worked when it had to.
- 17:06There are clothes that you don't wear that you used to wear when
- 17:09you were nine years old, something that you did you
- 17:17doesn't mean you have to do it forever.
- 17:20And I want you to feel that this strategy of shame doesn't quite
- 17:26fit you anymore. It doesn't quite belong anymore.
- 17:37As you look at the pack, you may notice a heaviness or a
- 17:42tightness there in your chest. You don't need to analyze it,
- 17:48just noticing. What if that tightness in the
- 17:52chest was built in a time when you didn't have agency, you
- 17:59didn't have power, when you didn't have alternatives?
- 18:08And the adult you, the one walking down this mountain now,
- 18:15doesn't need to carry what was created for a child to imagine
- 18:24gently, with no drama, simply placing the pack down on the
- 18:29mountainside, not throwing it away, not rejecting it, just
- 18:43returning it to the time and context where it belongs.
- 18:54As you do, the chest loosens, expands, not all at once, but
- 19:00honestly and naturally. I want you to get a feeling that
- 19:12this pack is just a metaphor for other expectations,
- 19:19responsibilities, culpability that you've been holding on to
- 19:27that was never yours. And if you were to forgive
- 19:34yourself for anything, it isn't for falling short, it isn't for
- 19:43standards that are too low, and it's not for not doing enough.
- 19:50If you were to forgive yourself for anything, it's for being too
- 19:56harsh on yourself, for judging yourself for things that were
- 20:05never your responsibility. So as you breathe in and breathe
- 20:11out, allow yourself to forgive. Not because you did anything
- 20:19wrong, but because. You carried real shame for
- 20:28things that were never yours. You were paying the penalty for
- 20:36somebody else's crime. You were clearing up the mess
- 20:41that someone else made you. You were paying the debts for
- 20:53someone else's overspending, but that doesn't mean that you were
- 21:01responsible. So as you breathe in and breathe
- 21:05out, forgive yourself completely now.
- 21:12Forgiving yourself releases you from all of that shame and blame
- 21:20that was never yours to begin with.
- 21:24When your unconscious exams let me know by nodding your head.
- 21:38Sometimes you might feel a release of so much being
- 21:43forgiven at one point, and other times it might just come to you
- 21:50in a realization. That wasn't me.
- 21:56I wasn't responsible. That's why I forgive myself for
- 22:03the false judgement, not for the issue itself.
- 22:13Continue to walk down that mountain, with each step sending
- 22:19a message to the body. I want you to think of all of
- 22:26the parts within Empowering forward parts, protective parts,
- 22:31anxious parts, fearful parts send a message to every cell in
- 22:36your body. We are not being chased, we are
- 22:44not being controlled, and we are not being evaluated.
- 22:54As the nervous system hears this, scan your body and look
- 23:01for clues of release. Maybe the shoulders soften, the
- 23:08breath drops lower into the diaphragm, the chest feels less
- 23:14tight, more relaxed. And maybe, perhaps for the first
- 23:22time in a long while, it feels like there's no need to stay
- 23:27alert for emotional danger. You feel more like the animal,
- 23:34capable but not vigilant. You feel more like the warrior
- 23:46in the garden rather than the gardener in the war.
- 23:55Incapable, powerful, but not needing, not needing to be on
- 24:03guard here and right now. No need to fight, no need to
- 24:08freeze and no need to explain yourself internally.
- 24:15Just movement, just space, just ease.
- 24:20And as the landscape opens, wider memories from the past may
- 24:25flicker by, not as threats, but like levels in a game you've
- 24:32already completed. Some were hard and some required
- 24:40endurance and some taught skills that you still possess now.
- 24:49But this isn't a scary game, and it was a fun game, and looking
- 24:56back, even the challenging levels gave you something.
- 25:02But the most important thing is this.
- 25:05The past is the past, which means the game is over and
- 25:13you're not inside it anymore, so the nervous system no longer
- 25:19needs to act like the threat is ongoing.
- 25:25Those game levels shaped here, they didn't define you, and
- 25:31there's something quietly empowering about that for
- 25:38yourself. Getting to where the mountain
- 25:40is, getting closer to normal ground.
- 25:46And as you descend, notice how confidence feels here.
- 25:52Not loud and not performative and not something you do.
- 25:58What if confidence here is simply not needing to know
- 26:03everything and not rushing to justify yourself and not pre
- 26:11empting conflict or judgement and not needing to monitor how
- 26:17you appear? What if confidence is the
- 26:24absence of contraction, the stepping stone to freedom, the
- 26:31body knowing that you don't need to manage yourself to be safe.
- 26:39Embrace that knowing, and that knowing spreads through the
- 26:46chest, through the spine, out into the arms.
- 26:52Feel it expansive, open and free.
- 27:00As you get to the bottom of the mountain, imagine.
- 27:04Imagine seeing what looks like a full length mirror, but not of
- 27:13the moment of your future and as you stay.
- 28:15None of these intense emotional tidal waves.
- 28:20Just choice. The ability to respond instead
- 28:25of react, to stay present instead of braced.
- 28:33That version of you seems safe, confident.
- 28:36And I want you to imagine, as you stare into that mirror, you
- 28:46notice something else. That version of you looks free,
- 28:58looks proud, looks resourceful. And notice that future version
- 29:07of you doesn't need to release shame anymore, because what
- 29:12never belonged to you doesn't need to be carried.
- 29:18The chest is open, the body is safe, the horizon is wide, and
- 29:24your future begins one second from now and you are free to
- 29:30continue walking forward, lighter than before.
- 29:38I want you to get a sense of feeling what you would feel like
- 29:43in a parallel universe where you had a different childhood of
- 29:48encouraging rather than criticism, role models of
- 29:56kindness and compassion. And I want you to get a sense
- 30:01that the neural pathways of that version of you are collapsing
- 30:07across space and time like a four dimensional wormhole and
- 30:14updating your neurology as part of that update.
- 30:21And just imagine that that update is starting to come to an
- 30:25end very soon. I will count from 1:00 to 10:00
- 30:35to awaken you. And the version of you that will
- 30:38return will leave shame behind. And any future shame, it will
- 30:48feel like it doesn't belong to you.
- 30:50It will feel detached. You will awake with an
- 30:56acceptance that bad things, cruel things, unjust things
- 31:04happen in the world, and that is not your fault.
- 31:13So take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your
- 31:17nose. Wiggle your fingers, wiggle your
- 31:20toes, connect and calibrate into the here and the now as I now
- 31:25count from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 31:32Starting to count 123 waking up 456 more alert 7-8 open your
- 31:41eyes. Open your eyes, 910.
- 31:45Wide awake, wide awake, wide awake.
