- 0:37To mini tech scroll everyone before we get into the.
- 0:39Stories This week I have two. Things to mention.
- 0:43The first is that I got a. Haircut.
- 0:45I wonder if any of you noticed the difference?
- 0:47My bangs are back. The second thing though, which
- 0:50is probably more relevant to. You guys is that?
- 0:54This episode is actually being pre.
- 0:55Recorded so this. Is going up tomorrow for me.
- 0:59So it was recorded yesterday for you?
- 1:00If anything monumental happened overnight, that is not covered
- 1:04in this episode. That is why.
- 1:06Other than that, Please remember to.
- 1:08Rate review and. Subscribe and star rate US on
- 1:11Spotify. We also have a buy.
- 1:13Me a coffee link in the description if you.
- 1:15Want to check that out? So yes, let's just.
- 1:17Get into the stories the. The first story we have to talk
- 1:20about today is. How an AI minister has recently
- 1:24been appointed in Albania. And no, I don't mean a minister.
- 1:27For AII. Mean an AI generated minister.
- 1:31Last week, the. Albanian Prime Minister Eddie
- 1:33Rama became the first leader making.
- 1:35Albania, the first. Country in the world to appoint
- 1:38a cabinet minister powered. By AI.
- 1:40So the minister's name is. Diala.
- 1:43Which reportedly means sun or sunshine in Albania.
- 1:46And if we have any Albanian listeners, please let me know.
- 1:49No. She does have an avatar where
- 1:51she shows up as. A woman dressed in traditional
- 1:53Albanian clothing the ministers. Portfolio slash role will
- 1:57basically be to tackle. Corruption and promote
- 2:00transparency in the government. This is seemingly around public
- 2:04procurement. Which is the purchase of goods,
- 2:06works or services by the state. Obviously this is an area of
- 2:09government. That would be.
- 2:10Susceptible to corruption and this is something that.
- 2:13Albania has also struggled with historically.
- 2:16The Prime Minister explained DLR.
- 2:18As the quote. First member not physically
- 2:20present. But virtually created.
- 2:22By artificial intelligence. Reporting from Politico.
- 2:25Went into more. Depth about.
- 2:26DLR's ministership. So I will just.
- 2:29Read a quote from that article. Now quote Rama stated that
- 2:33decisions on tenders would be taken out of the ministries and
- 2:36placed in the hands of D Ella. Who is the?
- 2:38Servant of public procurement, he said this.
- 2:41Process will be step by step. But Albania will be a country
- 2:44where public tenders are 100% incorruptible and where every
- 2:48public fund that goes through the tender procedure is 100%
- 2:52legible. I.
- 2:53Thought this was. Really interesting because.
- 2:55AI here is. Positioned as a tool to
- 2:57eliminate bias and judge the contract slash tenders slash
- 3:01from an objective perspective. This is obviously a very
- 3:05different way to view. AI from certain topics.
- 3:07That we have discussed in the past.
- 3:09Especially around how? AI Hub is.
- 3:11Biased depending on how it is being trained and what it has
- 3:15been trained on. So the conversation.
- 3:17And reaction to DLR Online has been reflecting some of these
- 3:22concerns and it has been very mixed.
- 3:24I have seen some comments from people who are simultaneously
- 3:28intrigued. And also worried about how AI
- 3:30will. Actually limit corruption and.
- 3:32Whether it actually? Can others are saying that they
- 3:35believe this was more of a symbolic play by the Prime
- 3:38Minister and the Albanian government?
- 3:39Because you could. Probably.
- 3:40Program an AI. Bot to allocate.
- 3:43Funds to certain organizations that the.
- 3:45Leadership favours, but they kind of.
- 3:47Wipe their hands clean of any sort of corruption and
- 3:50association. With that by.
- 3:52Using the AI minister, I think there is definitely something to
- 3:56be said around transparency here.
- 3:58At times it can definitely. Be difficult to tell how an.
- 4:01AI generated bot or model comes to a certain conclusion whether.
- 4:05That is ChatGPT or. A minister like in this case,
- 4:09but when we're dealing with public procurement and.
- 4:12Issues of state. Spending justification and the
- 4:15decision making process cannot. Be overstated it's.
- 4:18Definitely important to be transparent.
- 4:20About at this time, though there.
- 4:22Obviously isn't too much information about DLR and the
- 4:25back end of that. So I do think it's.
- 4:27Kind of. Hard to pass.
- 4:28Judgement on that at this time either.
- 4:30Way it's definitely. A historic.
- 4:32Move between this. And everything going on in Nepal
- 4:35with obviously Lauren reporting on this recently where a new
- 4:38representative was basically appointed by Gen.
- 4:42Z on. Discord it is crazy to.
- 4:45See the interaction of social media.
- 4:46AI Politics. In this kind of way.
- 4:49I actually. Don't know if we have any
- 4:50Albanian listeners but I would love to hear any perspectives
- 4:54that you. Have about diala.
- 4:56And everything going on with this AI minister.
- 4:59That brings us to our next story and.
- 5:01Obviously the biggest. Story on the Internet in the
- 5:04past week has been about Charlie Kirk's death.
- 5:06Lauren did cover this when the news broke, but more and more is
- 5:10coming out around the shooter's social media presence and his
- 5:13potential affiliation with certain online figures.
- 5:16So this does. Feel relevant to the podcast?
- 5:19So we thought. We would touch on this, I am
- 5:21sure. Most of you guys are across.
- 5:24This story since it is. Literally everywhere.
- 5:26Online at the moment, so I don't think we need to get into the
- 5:30nitty gritty here, but ever since the messages on the
- 5:33bullet. Cases were revealed.
- 5:35To the public, there has been speculation about.
- 5:37The alleged shooter? Tyler Robinson's political
- 5:41beliefs and online affiliations. If you've been online in the
- 5:44past week or so, you've definitely seen.
- 5:46The word grouper. Being thrown around along with
- 5:49political influences like Nick Fuentes come up in this
- 5:52discussion. There has been a lot of really
- 5:54solid reporting on this from Internet culture experts.
- 5:58Ryan Broderick's analysis in the Garbage Day newsletter was
- 6:01pretty comprehensive. I'll link it in the description
- 6:04as well for you guys and Aidan. Walker who?
- 6:06Is a meme expert. That we've actually had on the
- 6:08podcast. Before That's honestly one of my
- 6:10favorite interviews that we have done on the.
- 6:12Podcast, but he made quite a detailed TikTok.
- 6:15About the memes that people are. Associating with Tyler Robinson,
- 6:19I will. Insert a clip.
- 6:20Of that here if you haven't seen it yet.
- 6:21Because he honestly explains it better than I ever could.
- 6:24The casing on the shot that ended Charlie Kirk's life was
- 6:27engraved with a 12 year old furry bashing meme notices
- 6:30bulge. Oh woo, what's that?
- 6:32Which tells us an important thing.
- 6:33This assassination was a shit post.
- 6:35That is the lens to analyze it through.
- 6:37It was designed to be maximally disruptive and incomprehensible,
- 6:40cloaked in layer upon layer of irony so that nobody would know
- 6:44what he really meant unless they were our guy.
- 6:46Now the question everybody's asking is, was this kid a
- 6:49griper? And the question everybody's
- 6:50parents are asking is what is a griper?
- 6:53So gripers are the most extreme fringe of this kind of image
- 6:57board nihilistic culture that I'm talking about.
- 7:01They're led by Nick Fuentes, who is a content creator and a
- 7:04streamer. And they really are about
- 7:06transgressing any boundary that exists.
- 7:08They are like explicitly white nationalists, really bad,
- 7:11horrible people. The name Griper originates from
- 7:14this variant of Pepe the Frog, which comes about in the late
- 7:17twenty 10's. And these guys adopt it as a
- 7:19kind of collective self-portrait.
- 7:20They make it their profile picture, they make it their
- 7:22moniker. There was the Griper War of
- 7:252019, in which Nick Fuentes and his people trolled Charlie Kirk
- 7:28and Turning Point USA, showing up at these debate events and
- 7:32asking questions that would push Kirk to say things that were
- 7:35even more extreme than Kirk was already saying.
- 7:37Like many Pepe or Griper memes, the core of this is it's a
- 7:41lonely male figure and sort of an immiserated landscape looking
- 7:45sad. And that's part of the story I
- 7:46wish more people were talking about.
- 7:48What's driving our political violence isn't just
- 7:51polarization, where one side is getting more radical and kind of
- 7:54undermining democracy. Nor is it algorithms, like some
- 7:57have said, that are like pickling the brains of young
- 7:59people. It is that feeling which these
- 8:02Pepe memes represent, of you're always going to be alone, you're
- 8:05never going to have a future, and you're never going to have a
- 8:08voice. Since there is already.
- 8:09Quite a lot out there. I don't think it's worth us
- 8:12going into this again. For you especially.
- 8:15Because gropers and the culture and memes around them.
- 8:18A quite specialized but why we wanted to cover this story
- 8:21though today was I think it leads us to.
- 8:23A bigger question around how information, specifically
- 8:27information relating to the online world and Internet.
- 8:30Culture is being covered. When it comes to Charlie Kirk's
- 8:33death and Tyler Robinson's political.
- 8:35Beliefs. What we have seen so far is that
- 8:37on one side you have social media.
- 8:39Users who are. Extremely familiar with people
- 8:41like Nick Fuentes and the white supremacist, misogynistic,
- 8:45homophobic and anti-Semitic beliefs that.
- 8:48He puts forward to his. Followers and on the flip side,
- 8:50you have people who have never. Heard about this side of the
- 8:53Internet whether Tyler. Robinson was actually.
- 8:56Part of this. Group or not, I think is a
- 8:57different question here. But the very fact that he could
- 9:01be. Shows the influence that this
- 9:03niche has on social media. Uses especially.
- 9:06Young men. This begs the question though,
- 9:08why hadn't mainstream media been covering this niche before?
- 9:12And that has left many social media users concerned.
- 9:16Especially about the potential of the.
- 9:17Violence down the line. 1 threads post I saw for example
- 9:21said quote. Tik Tokers.
- 9:22Are doing an infinitely better job explaining the Gropa
- 9:25situation than any mainstream media outlet.
- 9:28Aside from Tik Tokers, some of the best.
- 9:30Coverage is coming from various independent journalists, some of
- 9:33whom I've already mentioned. But for media companies to
- 9:37produce similar coverage, they need money and experts in this.
- 9:42Specific side. Of the Internet Internet.
- 9:44Culture and tech reporting is so.
- 9:46Unbelievably vast. It's impossible to have one
- 9:49journalist do it all. Unfortunately though, this is
- 9:52what many legacy media brands do either because they don't have
- 9:55the. Resources to do?
- 9:56This in any other. Way or because?
- 9:59People making the hiring decisions don't really
- 10:01understand how fragmented. This niche actually is this is.
- 10:05Especially important because. Clearly the left.
- 10:08Right, political binary cannot explain.
- 10:10Every political act. Anymore.
- 10:12For example, we have been seeing a lot of commentary on TikTok
- 10:15about acceleration ISM and how this relates to online political
- 10:19ideology and messaging. But there hasn't really been
- 10:22anything about that in mainstream media.
- 10:24And it really does add important context to Tyler Robinson and
- 10:29just. This.
- 10:30Movement more broadly. Charlie Kirk Shooter exists
- 10:34politically on the horseshoe, like right in the middle of the
- 10:38horseshoe between right and left.
- 10:40They are so far to the right that they are consequently to
- 10:44the left, and they are so far to the left that they are
- 10:46consequently on the extreme right.
- 10:48There's a lot of variety within this group, but the one thing
- 10:53they come together to agree upon is that nothing means anything
- 10:57and you should do anything for the laws.
- 11:00That's what it means. Unless you have spent time in
- 11:05these online spaces observing them, it is very difficult to
- 11:09understand. But this was predominantly done
- 11:12for the laws, and then the secondary function of it was
- 11:15acceleration ISM in order to crumble the societal structure
- 11:20that we currently they have now. And that is what it comes down
- 11:22to. And that's partly why people are
- 11:25so conflicted and unable to pin them down because no, they're
- 11:29not completely all right, and no, they're not completely left.
- 11:33They exist in the middle of the horseshoe of extremism.
- 11:37This group is highly nihilistic in many ways.
- 11:39Most of the reasoning behind it is for the laws.
- 11:43They almost don't care what they believe in as long as it's
- 11:46funny. And that's what a lot of it
- 11:48comes down to. Is it funny?
- 11:49Does it accelerate chaos and societal collapse?
- 11:53If it checks those two boxes, that's what they're into.
- 11:56In a similar vein, there is also a conversation going on around
- 12:00access to information and who. Deserves it with some of the
- 12:03best. Coverage around Tyler Robinson
- 12:05and Charlie Cut coming from independent journalists posting
- 12:08on the likes. Of Substack, Patreon.
- 12:11Or just more general personal newsletters.
- 12:13Consumers, obviously. Have to pay.
- 12:15For membership, this conversation while it has been
- 12:18going around among. Users I haven't.
- 12:21Really been seeing many. Creators Cover.
- 12:23It or many mainstream media publications talk about it.
- 12:26So I thought. It would be an interesting angle
- 12:29to. Talk about this.
- 12:29Story and also kind of gives you some.
- 12:32Fresh thoughts. Around this story.
- 12:34Because there is. So much content going around and
- 12:37we don't want to just add to the.
- 12:38Conversation To add to the conversation we.
- 12:40Want to add something meaningful?
- 12:41OK, let's move on to the next story.
- 12:44This one is quite a. Pivot.
- 12:45This story is a platform update where Spotify.
- 12:49Has recently. Switched up its free user tier.
- 12:52Lifting the shuffle only listener experience for context.
- 12:56Before this update free users on Spotify.
- 12:58Couldn't listen to a specific. Track you would have had to have
- 13:01shuffled. An album or a playlist before
- 13:04eventually landing on the song you actually wanted to listen
- 13:07to. There was also a limited amount
- 13:09of. Skips per hour, but Spotify.
- 13:11Has now introduced Quote, Pick and play, Search and Play, and
- 13:15Share and play, which is. Exactly what it.
- 13:17Sounds like it. Basically just allows users.
- 13:19To listen to any song they want immediately in a statement
- 13:22through to the. Verge, There are.
- 13:24Still restrictions around free users and what they want to
- 13:28listen to as. Spotify.
- 13:29Spokesperson Luke McKay. Told the publication.
- 13:31Quote Only Spotify Premium users have complete control to play
- 13:35and skip music without restrictions.
- 13:37Mobile listeners of the updated free experience will be able to
- 13:41tap on any song. Or search for what they'd like
- 13:44to play or if. They don't like a track or
- 13:46simply don't want to hear what's next?
- 13:47Skip the occasional song and carry on listening.
- 13:50Each user has a daily allocated amount of on demand time.
- 13:53Once this limit is reached, users will then be limited.
- 13:56To six skips per hour. I wanted to cover the story
- 13:59because. It's obviously pretty good news.
- 14:01For free Spotify users but it all.
- 14:03Also I think shows the growing competition between Spotify and
- 14:07other streaming platforms. It has been quite a.
- 14:10Big conversation online recently.
- 14:12How many? Spotify users are.
- 14:14Seemingly switching streaming platforms, with some of them
- 14:17going to Apple Music. In fact, it was.
- 14:20Actually recently reported maybe at the end of.
- 14:23August that. Apple Music was rolling out a.
- 14:25Tool that allows you to import. Playlists from other streaming
- 14:29services, which was arguably an attempt.
- 14:32To court Spotify users but this back.
- 14:34And Forth has ultimately seen the streaming platforms both.
- 14:37Roll out a suite of. Different features and including
- 14:39Spotify DMS. I remember people were talking about that as well
- 14:43at the end of last month. All in all though, when it comes
- 14:46to the free user experience, I think it's definitely.
- 14:49Positive that. Spotify is allowing users to
- 14:52take more control of that listening experience.
- 14:55Streaming platforms are obviously the main way to
- 14:57consume music. These days.
- 14:59And the barrier to entry just shouldn't be high.
- 15:02Especially when. You have so many young people
- 15:04dealing with the cost of living crisis and having to cut back on
- 15:07expenditure. To.
- 15:08Afford the necessities and who doesn't love listening to music
- 15:12honestly? Lastly, I have a super quick
- 15:14update about the. US TikTok ban I.
- 15:17Will keep this. Short since we have covered the
- 15:20ban extensively at this point and every time I bring it up I
- 15:23wish I didn't have to. I feel like.
- 15:26I have done at least 7 episodes involving the TikTok ban and I
- 15:31just can't anymore. But but hopefully we are coming
- 15:33to an end of all this. Because.
- 15:34The US and China have allegedly agreed on a framework that will
- 15:38allow TikTok to continue operating in the US.
- 15:40Some officials from the administration spoke to the
- 15:43deal, but not much has been revealed.
- 15:45So far. According to reporting from
- 15:47Politico Quote. A White House.
- 15:49Official granted anonymity. To share details.
- 15:51That have not yet been made public, said the commercial
- 15:54terms have been agreed to between the.
- 15:56Parties, but the. Finalization of the deal is
- 15:59dependent on Trump's call with China's leader on Friday, during
- 16:03which the 2. Leaders will discuss details, so
- 16:05I guess we'll. Hear more about this later in
- 16:07the week. It will be super interesting to
- 16:09see what ends up happening with the algorithm because that is
- 16:12obviously been a major sticking point so far because it's not
- 16:15something that China wants to sell because.
- 16:17It is obviously very powerful, so I guess we'll just have to.
- 16:20Wait and see what happens there. Well.
- 16:22That is. Everything from Mini.
- 16:24Tech scroll today, I hope. You guys enjoyed and I hope the
- 16:284:00 PM vibe is not jarring compared to the 9:00 AM vibe
- 16:33which is like when I usually record Lauren.
- 16:35Will speak. To you guys tomorrow I actually.
- 16:37Won't speak to you guys. Next week, but.
- 16:39There will still be a mini tech. Scroll episode going up.
- 16:43But yes, thank you for listening.
- 16:44Bye.
