- 0:00Speaker 1: Now time for football for Andrew to check go is
- 0:03Speaker 1: joining us Nick Earnshaw alongside Pete g Now Andrew. Big
- 0:07Speaker 1: news coming down yesterday as the Eagles finally agreed to
- 0:10Speaker 1: a four year, one hundred and fifty two million dollar
- 0:13Speaker 1: deal worth up to one hundred and sixty million dollar
- 0:17Speaker 1: deal with Jalen Carter. It finally got done, Andrew, And
- 0:21Speaker 1: how did it get done?
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hey? Nick? What's going on? Yeah, this is something that
- 0:27Speaker 2: felt inevitable. Hallie Roseman is not in the business of
- 0:30Speaker 2: giving away or letting, you know, premiere talent walk out
- 0:33Speaker 2: the door. So it just felt like something that was
- 0:36Speaker 2: going to happen. It just took a little bit of time.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Actually it didn't take all that much time, but the Eagles,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you know, struck the deal, and it was very timely
- 0:43Speaker 2: in doing so, because then it pours cold water on
- 0:47Speaker 2: any potential thought of a ripple effect of what that
- 0:51Speaker 2: could mean in terms of practice participation and things like that.
- 0:54Speaker 2: But the Eagles keep a centerpiece in the fold for
- 0:57Speaker 2: the foreseeable future. And let's not forget they all so
- 1:00Speaker 2: locked in Jordan Davis back in March with three years,
- 1:03Speaker 2: seven eight million dollar extensions, so they have their interior
- 1:06Speaker 2: tandem for the foreseeable future.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Andrew, Now, what does this mean going forward for guys
- 1:13Speaker 1: like Cooper, Dejen, Quinyon Mitchell, know Howie Roseman spoke earlier
- 1:17Speaker 1: today along with Nick Siriani. What does it mean for
- 1:20Speaker 1: those guys and their potential contracts long term?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great question, and this is something that
- 1:27Speaker 2: the Eagles have already envisioned. They knew that these contracts
- 1:30Speaker 2: are going to be coming down the pike, and it's
- 1:32Speaker 2: something that they've taken into account. And so in doing so,
- 1:36Speaker 2: you have to alter the way you configure your roster. Right,
- 1:40Speaker 2: so they've been very offensive heavy. There's been a lot
- 1:42Speaker 2: of money that's been invested on that side of the ball,
- 1:46Speaker 2: and they've drafted on the defensive side. Now you almost
- 1:48Speaker 2: have to do the opposite, and you have to pay
- 1:51Speaker 2: your young talent on the defensive side and start drafting
- 1:54Speaker 2: and getting younger on the offensive side to be able
- 1:57Speaker 2: to afford these players. But make them mistake about it. Guys,
- 2:00Speaker 2: the Eagles know what they're up against. They know that Quina, Mitchell,
- 2:04Speaker 2: Cooper Dejen, those are elite talent, and much like Joy
- 2:07Speaker 2: and Carter, there's zero chance that they're gonna let those
- 2:10Speaker 2: guys get away. So it is it's not something that
- 2:13Speaker 2: they that that was just sort of sprung on them.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It's it's it's always been in, you know, at the
- 2:18Speaker 2: at the front of their minds. They're not just looking
- 2:20Speaker 2: at the roster as it stands now. They're looking about
- 2:23Speaker 2: what it's going to be, you know, you know, two
- 2:26Speaker 2: years down the road, two three years down the road.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Does that mean Andrew may be sacrificing a guy like
- 2:31Speaker 3: Nolan Smith or Moro Jomo.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Coming up though?
- 2:35Speaker 3: I mean obviously Cooper dejen And and Quinon are the
- 2:39Speaker 3: two main guys, but sacrificing maybe a Nolan Smith or
- 2:42Speaker 3: a Moro Jomo coming up here.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, they're gonna have to there. There's gonna be some
- 2:47Speaker 2: talent that, unfortunately they're not gonna be able to keep
- 2:49Speaker 2: in the building. And I look at Moro Jomo and
- 2:51Speaker 2: that's a great example because that's someone who had a
- 2:53Speaker 2: career high in sacks last year he had six sacks,
- 2:56Speaker 2: and I think that the arrow is very much trending
- 2:59Speaker 2: up on him. He's a really good interior pass rusher.
- 3:02Speaker 2: He has good quickness. If he's able to replicate that
- 3:05Speaker 2: then you're gonna see sorry about that background noise, but
- 3:10Speaker 2: you're going to see a team being willing to pony
- 3:12Speaker 2: up that kind of money, much like they did for
- 3:14Speaker 2: Milton Williams, and that's going to price himself out of
- 3:16Speaker 2: the Eagles' budget more likely. Nolan Smith is interesting because
- 3:20Speaker 2: he has that first round tag and he's a younger player,
- 3:24Speaker 2: but he hasn't quite been able to put together a
- 3:27Speaker 2: complete season. Injuries have sort of derailed his progress at times.
- 3:30Speaker 2: He's an exceptional run defender at two hundred and forty
- 3:33Speaker 2: five pounds, I would argue that pounds for pound, guys,
- 3:36Speaker 2: he's one of the more physical edge defenders in the
- 3:38Speaker 2: game in terms of just setting the edge, But the
- 3:41Speaker 2: sack numbers aren't there, and you may have to You're
- 3:43Speaker 2: going to have to make a decision whether it's Jalox
- 3:45Speaker 2: Hunt or Nolan Smith. And I think j looks Hunt
- 3:47Speaker 2: has shown to be the player with more upside in
- 3:50Speaker 2: terms of pass rush. And yeah, I mean, you're just
- 3:53Speaker 2: not able to keep everybody. They're gonna have to make
- 3:55Speaker 2: some difficult decisions. So I agree with you there.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Andrew. Today Roseman set his famous mantra draft develop and
- 4:05Speaker 3: resign when it comes to roster building in the NFL.
- 4:09Speaker 3: How important is that to have that philosophy that Roseman
- 4:13Speaker 3: has had for years in that draft, develop and resign.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's incredibly important. And you look at the evolution
- 4:20Speaker 2: of Howie Roseman as a general manager earlier in his tenure,
- 4:24Speaker 2: if you remember, the rosters were largely predicated on on
- 4:28Speaker 2: those free agent signings right or striking on a trade
- 4:32Speaker 2: instead of you know, drafting and developing. And I think
- 4:36Speaker 2: right now what you've seen is sort of a shift
- 4:38Speaker 2: in philosophy. But also Howie Roseman and his draft team
- 4:42Speaker 2: deserves a lot of credit for the evaluation and being
- 4:45Speaker 2: able to really get these picks right. And then there's
- 4:48Speaker 2: it's a multi layered conversation because what they've done, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: I like to really shed light on this is the
- 4:52Speaker 2: Eagles have assembled a very strong group of assistant coaches
- 4:56Speaker 2: that pride themselves on player development. And that also is
- 5:00Speaker 2: something that starts at the top. Nick Sirianni prioritizes player
- 5:04Speaker 2: development and that trickles down to his coaches, and that
- 5:07Speaker 2: the teaching element I don't think can be overstated because
- 5:12Speaker 2: that's something that a lot of these coaches when we're
- 5:14Speaker 2: talking to them in the spring, they say, you know,
- 5:16Speaker 2: we look at ourselves as teachers first, then as a coach,
- 5:19Speaker 2: and you look across the board, whether it's Clint Hurt,
- 5:21Speaker 2: whether it's linebackers coach Bobby King, Christian Parker, who's the
- 5:25Speaker 2: defensive coordinator on the offensive side. You know, Jeff Stotlin
- 5:28Speaker 2: for all these years. That doesn't happen by mistake. And
- 5:32Speaker 2: so the whole drafting and developing it takes so many
- 5:35Speaker 2: different people to make it work. But the Eagles have
- 5:37Speaker 2: found a successful formula to draft some of these young
- 5:40Speaker 2: players and then put them in position where all of
- 5:42Speaker 2: a sudden they are the nucleus of your team and
- 5:45Speaker 2: you're setting yourselves up for sustained success.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We're talking with Andrew Tochecko Football at four Nick Earnshaw
- 5:52Speaker 1: PG Feeling in for Mike Gill today powered by the
- 5:55Speaker 1: Inside the Birds Podcast. Andrew, you were down at the
- 5:58Speaker 1: first day of training camp today. Any takeaways you noticed
- 6:03Speaker 1: from the first day of camp.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, so all the all eyes are on the offense, right,
- 6:10Speaker 2: That's been the predominant storyline going into the summer. And
- 6:14Speaker 2: what I can tell you, and it's only one day
- 6:16Speaker 2: of practice, so you never want to get too carried
- 6:18Speaker 2: away one way or the other. But what we have
- 6:20Speaker 2: to go off of is one day, and I thought
- 6:22Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts looked pretty sharp in terms of just ball placement, delivery.
- 6:27Speaker 2: There's a lot of the middle of the field throws today,
- 6:29Speaker 2: which is a hallmark of this offense. And there was
- 6:33Speaker 2: a throw in particular, I think it was a dig
- 6:35Speaker 2: route to Devonte where Quinnon Mitchell had pretty tight coverage,
- 6:39Speaker 2: but the throw was better. Jalen gets that one in.
- 6:42Speaker 2: There was another one where Darius Cooper makes a nice
- 6:44Speaker 2: catch where Jalen Hurts sort of drops it in the
- 6:46Speaker 2: bucket there. Darius dives just a little bit to come
- 6:49Speaker 2: up with it, but by and large I thought that
- 6:51Speaker 2: he looked sort of comfortable in there. It didn't see
- 6:54Speaker 2: the happy feed and he was throwing with good anticipation. Again,
- 6:57Speaker 2: it's just one practice, but it's certainly encourage moving forward,
- 7:01Speaker 2: and Jyalox hunt guys on the defensive side was a
- 7:04Speaker 2: one man wrecking crew. There's no pads on. This is
- 7:07Speaker 2: still part of the acclamation period. But what you're seeing
- 7:10Speaker 2: from Jalox is really a continuation of what I saw
- 7:13Speaker 2: last summer and what you all saw during the season
- 7:15Speaker 2: and what I saw in the spring, and that is
- 7:17Speaker 2: a player who is now putting everything together. Now the
- 7:22Speaker 2: understanding in the grasp of this defense has caught up
- 7:25Speaker 2: to his athleticism. He's able to kind of turn it
- 7:28Speaker 2: loose and play freely. He has a more refined approach
- 7:32Speaker 2: as a pass rusher. There's more moves. He is able
- 7:35Speaker 2: to have more of an attention to detail and know
- 7:37Speaker 2: how to read offensive tackles. And there was plays where
- 7:40Speaker 2: he's storming into the backfield where he's giving Jordan Malatta,
- 7:45Speaker 2: you know, some trouble because he's very quick off the
- 7:47Speaker 2: snap and things like that. So I thought jay loox
- 7:50Speaker 2: hunt early in practice, especially with someone who caught my eye.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yesterday the news was Jalen Carter. Today was a little
- 7:56Speaker 1: bit of injury news with Jonathan Grenard, but he goes
- 8:00Speaker 1: on the pump list to start camp with a pectoral strain.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Any updates you can provide the audience Andrew with Grenard's injury.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, he suffered the PEX strain lifting before training
- 8:15Speaker 2: camp and it's not expected to be a long term concern. Now,
- 8:20Speaker 2: there are certain layers to this conversation right, because Jonathan
- 8:23Speaker 2: Gernard is twenty nine years old. He had a shoulder
- 8:27Speaker 2: injury last year that limited him to twelve games, and
- 8:30Speaker 2: he hasn't yet participated in team droves with the Eagles.
- 8:33Speaker 2: In the spring, he was a non participant during team droves.
- 8:37Speaker 2: But that was all part of the plan that was,
- 8:39Speaker 2: you know, Grenard's camp in the Eagles. They came to
- 8:41Speaker 2: that agreement. But I don't know that it's something that
- 8:44Speaker 2: you can just say nothing to see here and there's
- 8:47Speaker 2: no concern. I mean, anytime you have a top tier
- 8:50Speaker 2: pass rusher that's doing with something like this and peck
- 8:53Speaker 2: strains can be tricky, especially when you're talking about that
- 8:57Speaker 2: position where you have to be able to extend and
- 9:00Speaker 2: shed blocks and things like that. So I don't know
- 9:03Speaker 2: that you want to rush somebody like that back and
- 9:05Speaker 2: they're starting him on the pup list. And while that's
- 9:09Speaker 2: not good, we have to still let it play out
- 9:11Speaker 2: and see how it goes. And it's going to get
- 9:13Speaker 2: more opportunities to Jals Hunt and Nolan Smith and some
- 9:17Speaker 2: of those guys to just get reps and continue to
- 9:20Speaker 2: hone their craft.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Andrew, this might be a question for a couple of
- 9:23Speaker 3: weeks down the line, but I'm gonna ask it to you.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Should we anticipate that the Eagles kind of go away
- 9:30Speaker 3: from their philosophy of not playing their guys in the
- 9:32Speaker 3: preseason game with the new offensive coordinator and the brand
- 9:36Speaker 3: new offense that this off that these players are gonna
- 9:39Speaker 3: have to go through here, should we anticipate a change
- 9:43Speaker 3: of philosophy here from these Eagles?
- 9:45Speaker 2: I don't know that you will. And the only reason
- 9:48Speaker 2: why I say that is it just seems like it's
- 9:51Speaker 2: hard to argue with results, and I understand that there's
- 9:54Speaker 2: just the newness of the offense and it would need
- 9:57Speaker 2: one to believe, well, you got to get reps in
- 9:59Speaker 2: a game before you get into the regular season. But
- 10:02Speaker 2: that's where the value of joint practices come in, where
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's largely the first team, not a little second team
- 10:09Speaker 2: that that gets most of the work. That the Eagles
- 10:12Speaker 2: have two practices slated with the new England Patriots, that's
- 10:15Speaker 2: going to be something that I think they're going to
- 10:17Speaker 2: look at it as being hugely invaluable to laying the
- 10:20Speaker 2: foundation and really fine tuning some of the details of
- 10:23Speaker 2: this offense. I don't know that you want to put
- 10:25Speaker 2: any of those players at risk. I mean, you're seeing
- 10:29Speaker 2: some of these injuries already across the league. The Eagles
- 10:31Speaker 2: have seemingly a really good grasp on how much work
- 10:35Speaker 2: they need or certain levels of of work that they
- 10:39Speaker 2: need to get their starters through throughout the summer that
- 10:41Speaker 2: they deem to be acceptable. And if they if they
- 10:45Speaker 2: are come to the conclusion that the offense isn't quite
- 10:47Speaker 2: where they want it to be, well, then maybe that
- 10:49Speaker 2: becomes part of the conversation. But I don't see Nick
- 10:52Speaker 2: Sirianni deviating from an approach that has been so successful
- 10:55Speaker 2: over the you know, the past few years, uh at
- 10:58Speaker 2: for the sake of the offense being new. I I
- 11:00Speaker 2: believe that there's gonna find other ways to ensure that
- 11:03Speaker 2: they get that work in.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Andrew de Checko inside the Birds one more before you go.
- 11:09Speaker 1: The Lebron James conversation made its way, Cam. I was
- 11:12Speaker 1: seeing all that go through. What were some of the
- 11:15Speaker 1: interesting answers that you saw from some of the players,
- 11:17Speaker 1: Say Quad, I know was asked about it, Jay Lyddavonte Smith,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I mean that that buzz is continuing through trading camp.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Am all right, yeah, man? How about Jordan Davis sits down.
- 11:27Speaker 2: The first thing he says is, what do you guys
- 11:28Speaker 2: think of the Lebron trade? Like that that conversation Nick,
- 11:32Speaker 2: and you know this, it just is it's not going
- 11:35Speaker 2: to let up. It's but it has the city buzzing
- 11:37Speaker 2: right now. Players who have grown up watching him play
- 11:41Speaker 2: are are thrilled that they get to play, and they
- 11:43Speaker 2: say they're playing in the same cities, playing across you know,
- 11:45Speaker 2: right there is the excitement is palpable, and it extends
- 11:49Speaker 2: beyond uh, you know, the you know fans, you're seeing
- 11:53Speaker 2: players like that that are that are kind of almost
- 11:57Speaker 2: like a kid on Christmas morning knowing that a player
- 12:00Speaker 2: they've watched and you know all these years is now
- 12:02Speaker 2: playing here in Philadelphia. So it's just a really good
- 12:04Speaker 2: time time here in Philadelphia. And yeah, if you needed
- 12:08Speaker 2: any other further indication of that, just look at what
- 12:11Speaker 2: look at the players reactions.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it was stunning. A lot of the players were
- 12:15Speaker 1: talking about it through camp today, first day of training
- 12:18Speaker 1: camp for the Philadelphia Eagles. Andrew de Checo inside the Birds,
- 12:23Speaker 1: thank you so much for joining us at.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Football for man, you got it. Guys, have a great day.
