Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Something needs to be done about NCEA
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: If we could mark NCA or even NCA level one,
- 0:05Speaker 1: would we even give it an achieved, let alone a
- 0:07Speaker 1: merit or an excellence. We heard at the weekend about
- 0:10Speaker 1: an arrow report that's been done for the government basically
- 0:12Speaker 1: says the whole system's far too flexible. Kids are scooping
- 0:17Speaker 1: up credits from left, right and center, all corners of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the classroom. Too broad, too flexible. As a result, they're
- 0:24Speaker 1: not being properly taught core subjects and basic stuff things
- 0:28Speaker 1: you would expect that young people are taught at high school.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Government's looking at it, you know, always looking at it.
- 0:35Speaker 1: But there was a number in this report which I
- 0:37Speaker 1: think should jump out for all parents and teachers. Twenty
- 0:41Speaker 1: two percent. Last year, twenty two percent of NCA results
- 0:47Speaker 1: came from external assessment, which is code language for exams,
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know, actually going and sitting down under the watchful
- 0:55Speaker 1: eye of a teacher or an assessor. The bulk of
- 0:59Speaker 1: the credits that students got came from internal assessment stuff
- 1:03Speaker 1: like essays. This means you can basically get away with
- 1:07Speaker 1: using AI and all sorts of other stuff to do
- 1:10Speaker 1: the work for you. One in four this is bad.
- 1:14Speaker 1: One in four kids didn't bother sitting the exams for
- 1:17Speaker 1: subjects because they already had enough internal credits. Now I
- 1:22Speaker 1: went through the NCAA system and this happened to me too,
- 1:26Speaker 1: that I would never dream of skipping, and I would
- 1:29Speaker 1: have been cobbed around the back of the head by
- 1:31Speaker 1: mum skipping an exam just because I had enough credits
- 1:35Speaker 1: to go on. Clearly, something has to be done about this.
- 1:38Speaker 1: What hope do we give students if they're not being
- 1:41Speaker 1: taught the basics or they're not being assessed properly. And
- 1:44Speaker 1: until something is done about that, you'll keep getting bad headlines.
- 1:48Speaker 1: You'll keep getting bad aero reports about a system that
- 1:53Speaker 1: gets undermined. The qualification gets undermined every time one of
- 1:57Speaker 1: these headline rolls out, and kids rely on these qualifications
- 2:02Speaker 1: to get them through their working lives. That doesn't seem
- 2:04Speaker 1: very fair. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
