- 0:00Speaker 1: Football four powered by the Inside of the Birds Podcast.
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's prompted by the Fanatics sportsbook at Ocean Casino Resort
- 0:05Speaker 1: in Atlantic City, and of course Eagles Thursday night. You
- 0:09Speaker 1: can listen to the game right here on ninety seven
- 0:12Speaker 1: three ESPN. Eagles g Men, Giants team, good defense, new
- 0:19Speaker 1: quarterback Jackson Dart a rookie. They got beat by their
- 0:24Speaker 1: Saints on Sunday. Wolf. That's coming off of a win
- 0:28Speaker 1: against the Chargers. But the Eagles have their own issues
- 0:32Speaker 1: and concerns coming out of the loss to the Broncos.
- 0:35Speaker 1: What will it take to beat the Giants. We'll get
- 0:37Speaker 1: into that in just a moment, but first, what are
- 0:40Speaker 1: some of the concerns coming out of that loss to
- 0:42Speaker 1: the Broncos. We're bringing Adam kaplan from the Inside the
- 0:45Speaker 1: Birds Podcast. Adam, we know that this team certainly has
- 0:50Speaker 1: got its problems, but what are some of the concerns
- 0:52Speaker 1: we have at this stage of the season.
- 0:55Speaker 2: You know, it's funny Mike us Philly fans out there,
- 0:58Speaker 2: you know the Phillies who last night, We're trying to
- 1:01Speaker 2: figure out what who to blame here. So it's always
- 1:04Speaker 2: easy to point to the manager, the general manager and
- 1:07Speaker 2: there's certain things you could blame them before, but the
- 1:09Speaker 2: players play and that's you know that. As we turn
- 1:12Speaker 2: our transition here to the Eagles and Kevin Batulo, it's
- 1:16Speaker 2: always easy Mike to criticize the play caller because he's
- 1:20Speaker 2: the one who makes a decision on game day what's
- 1:23Speaker 2: going to be called in game. He's got to see
- 1:26Speaker 2: what's working, what's not working. It's the same as Kellen
- 1:28Speaker 2: Moore last year mid season fans wanted Kellimore fired, believe
- 1:31Speaker 2: it or not, see people forget about that. After that
- 1:34Speaker 2: great game Hurts had with Kella Moore in Week one
- 1:36Speaker 2: against Green Bay in Brazil, it was downhill the landing game,
- 1:39Speaker 2: Hurts didn't play well. People like, what are you doing?
- 1:42Speaker 2: This is ridiculous, And people are frustrated with Kellen Moore.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Why is any helping Hurts? And it really wasn't too
- 1:48Speaker 2: that Pittsburgh game. Till your self something great and Hurts
- 1:52Speaker 2: with phenomenal in that game. So why am I bring
- 1:54Speaker 2: this up? Folks have to be patient with Kevin Btulo.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I know they want him fired already. It's really in fact,
- 1:59Speaker 2: they wanted him fired after we two, but it's not happening.
- 2:02Speaker 2: And you got to be patient. So on your question, Mike,
- 2:05Speaker 2: you know what's got to happen. But too Look, it
- 2:09Speaker 2: got out of hand a little bit with a running game.
- 2:11Speaker 2: What we said on Inside the Birds, Mike was you
- 2:14Speaker 2: got to come out throwing. You got to be a
- 2:15Speaker 2: pass particular against in man coverage like Denver has come
- 2:18Speaker 2: out throwing. They did. And what we didn't know they
- 2:21Speaker 2: were going to do, which I know some of the
- 2:23Speaker 2: fans who really file the game are smart. They said
- 2:25Speaker 2: it on our they had actually asked us on our
- 2:30Speaker 2: YouTube comments about where are they going to start the RPOs? Well,
- 2:33Speaker 2: they just did. The RPOs worked to a certain degree.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Hurts unfortunately sometimes held on the ball too long. The
- 2:41Speaker 2: receivers have to come back to the football, which they
- 2:43Speaker 2: don't do a great job of. So the pass the
- 2:45Speaker 2: game is inconsistent, Mike. The consistency of the pass the
- 2:48Speaker 2: game needs to be there. How do you help it
- 2:50Speaker 2: get your running game back? I know it's looked bad.
- 2:53Speaker 2: It's hard to understand. It is. It's hard to believe.
- 2:56Speaker 2: It's somewhat easier to understand when you know how poor
- 2:59Speaker 2: the in tier the offensive lines playing. But Mike, they've
- 3:04Speaker 2: got to help the quarterback out and by the way,
- 3:05Speaker 2: Hurts has got to be a part of the running game. Again,
- 3:08Speaker 2: that was not what we were expecting last week.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you got problems in the run game, consistency of
- 3:13Speaker 1: that pass game, the interior offensive line. So ultimately, here
- 3:17Speaker 1: are some of these things fixable. Because the running game
- 3:20Speaker 1: last year you had two thousand year hard rusher. The
- 3:22Speaker 1: passing game last year, I mean, it wasn't explosively great,
- 3:26Speaker 1: but you can count on it when you need it to.
- 3:28Speaker 1: At times, it doesn't seem like you can count on
- 3:30Speaker 1: either one of these right.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Now, Mike, here's the problem, Okay, and they're kind of connected.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Kim Jergens is clearly not himself, right. We've known that
- 3:40Speaker 2: he had the back surgery. Lanta Dickerson, who's got a
- 3:43Speaker 2: left ankle sprain. Mike, he doesn't look right. We've mentioned
- 3:48Speaker 2: this before and in South of bart he looks a
- 3:49Speaker 2: little heavy. He's had two surgeries in the same calendar year.
- 3:55Speaker 2: That's not good. You worry about Brett Toast. I mean,
- 3:59Speaker 2: I'll give the credit. He's been all on off the
- 4:01Speaker 2: Eagles roster since twenty nineteen. He's ultimately probably not going
- 4:05Speaker 2: to be good enough as a backup. They're a miss
- 4:07Speaker 2: on Trevor Keegan. Mike, I know he's a fifth rounder,
- 4:10Speaker 2: but you saw the value of Jack Jack Driscoll, who
- 4:13Speaker 2: is a fourth rounder, as a as a rotational piece,
- 4:16Speaker 2: as a guy that if you needed someone to plug
- 4:19Speaker 2: and play, if a right tackles out, if a guard
- 4:22Speaker 2: was out, you could stick him in there and he'd play. Okay,
- 4:24Speaker 2: he could get you two to four games. That's about
- 4:27Speaker 2: it for him. They don't have that guy right now, Mike.
- 4:29Speaker 2: That's a problem. This is not a coaching issue. This
- 4:32Speaker 2: is it's on Jeff Stalin's problem. They're just not physically
- 4:35Speaker 2: good enough right now. They're just not good enough for
- 4:38Speaker 2: the interior. And Tyler Steen has not been a problem.
- 4:42Speaker 2: He's still work in progress. Lane Johnson is still great
- 4:47Speaker 2: football players, not quite to where he was. We know
- 4:49Speaker 2: Lane was dealing with the shoulder stinger on the shoulder issue,
- 4:52Speaker 2: and Jeremia a Lot has had some plays each game
- 4:55Speaker 2: where I think the timing's been off. So, Mike, as
- 4:58Speaker 2: we sum up the five arding offensive lineman, it's clearly
- 5:02Speaker 2: not nearly as good as last ye when they were leads.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So no doubt the issue, no doubt, And you know,
- 5:06Speaker 1: our buddy Zach Berman put out a tweet that it
- 5:10Speaker 1: was eye popping. They have had three and outs on
- 5:14Speaker 1: forty seven percent of their offensive drives. Forty seven percent
- 5:18Speaker 1: they go three and out. You know who that's number
- 5:22Speaker 1: one on the list. Number two is Tennessee and number
- 5:24Speaker 1: three is Cincinnati. Hardly teams that you want to be
- 5:27Speaker 1: mentioned with. The only teams worse than this ever two
- 5:32Speaker 1: thousand and five, the forty nine ers. They went four
- 5:35Speaker 1: and twelve that year. So you are going three and
- 5:37Speaker 1: out almost fifty percent of your possessions. It's unbelievable to
- 5:42Speaker 1: hear that.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Wow, you know, it's kind of like in pace off
- 5:46Speaker 2: if your side has retired like five innings in a row,
- 5:49Speaker 2: you don't get a hit, like, you don't even get
- 5:50Speaker 2: a base runner nothing. It's really bad. Yeah, that's look,
- 5:54Speaker 2: it's Mike, they're not I mean, the yards for contact
- 5:58Speaker 2: was one point seven. I haven't got this week's It
- 6:01Speaker 2: was actually one point six to eight up to a
- 6:03Speaker 2: week ago. I haven't got this week's numbers. This is
- 6:06Speaker 2: just mind boggling how bad it is, and the fact
- 6:09Speaker 2: that they're four and one. Yeah, look, and they've got
- 6:11Speaker 2: a tough schedule like that's someone asked to said, let
- 6:15Speaker 2: me bring this up. Someone asks us in our Patreon group, right,
- 6:17Speaker 2: we've had Patreon chat every Wednesday, which we have tomorrow night,
- 6:21Speaker 2: and someone asked, hey, could the line get better? And
- 6:23Speaker 2: I said, look, Dicker said, unfortunately, I just don't know. Physically, eventually,
- 6:29Speaker 2: with a back, it should get better. Like it's not
- 6:32Speaker 2: surprising that Jurgens said after the game that you know
- 6:35Speaker 2: he's still dealing with it and the after effects of
- 6:38Speaker 2: back surgery. That's not a surprise. But you have to
- 6:42Speaker 2: because these guys, look Jurgons now is in another full
- 6:46Speaker 2: year of starting. I know it's not been great, but
- 6:50Speaker 2: you expect my lot and Lane Johnson Lane to physically
- 6:52Speaker 2: get right. And don't they have the bye week after
- 6:56Speaker 2: they're the bye week one? I think is it week nine?
- 6:58Speaker 2: Is it? If I'm not mistaken not looking.
- 7:00Speaker 1: At no, it's coming up. It might be n what
- 7:02Speaker 1: are we in right now? We're going into six?
- 7:04Speaker 2: It is weak.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So they play the Giants Minnesota the Giants than the Buye.
- 7:09Speaker 2: So the hope is you get these guys some rest,
- 7:13Speaker 2: continue to rehab them. My belief is that it will
- 7:16Speaker 2: be better in the second half, but I would I
- 7:18Speaker 2: would bet the house if we use our own eyes, Mike,
- 7:22Speaker 2: that'll never be what it was last season. I just
- 7:24Speaker 2: don't see it. I just don't see it. You got
- 7:26Speaker 2: to accept it. It doesn't mean, by the way, that
- 7:29Speaker 2: they can't make the Super Bowl. I told our Patrion
- 7:32Speaker 2: group last June, when there was a lot of questions
- 7:35Speaker 2: about what this team will look like, I said, look
- 7:37Speaker 2: the league, based on the drafts and everything that we
- 7:40Speaker 2: didn't see, we wouldn't know how it would play out
- 7:41Speaker 2: until the season started. I didn't think it would be Mike,
- 7:45Speaker 2: and this doesn't look like a year for a dominant team.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Looked Buffalo just lost it home New England. No undefeated teams,
- 7:50Speaker 2: no team is great. It doesn't mean if you're legals
- 7:52Speaker 2: you want to play down in the competition. But you
- 7:54Speaker 2: don't have to be elite this season to go far.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I'm just telling you that's the way we are right now.
- 7:59Speaker 1: We're looking at concerns around the Bronco game, and really,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you know, the first five weeks of the season here
- 8:03Speaker 1: you're Ford one, but you do have concerns running game, consistency,
- 8:06Speaker 1: of passing, interior line. That's pretty much all phases of
- 8:09Speaker 1: the offensive game. What about the what about the defense?
- 8:14Speaker 2: Oh boy, the run defense. It's not bad, it's just
- 8:18Speaker 2: not what we had noted that Moro Jomo was a
- 8:23Speaker 2: concern of the run game. It has been. He's much
- 8:26Speaker 2: better pass rusher. That's you've shown him be the case.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Let's not underestimate or underplay the issue that Jalen Carter
- 8:34Speaker 2: has had since last season with this recurring shoulder problem, which,
- 8:38Speaker 2: by the way, he had in college. We noticed this
- 8:39Speaker 2: when Eagles drafted him from one of our sources said
- 8:42Speaker 2: that watched that shoulder that he had. We didn't even
- 8:45Speaker 2: know about it. This guy who we spoke with, I
- 8:48Speaker 2: think Jeff knew this as well, that Carter had a
- 8:50Speaker 2: bad shoulder in college. Clubs kind of red flagged. It.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Just something to watch, and that's been a problem. That's
- 8:56Speaker 2: one of them, Mike. This is something that it's not
- 9:00Speaker 2: like they're going to sign some run stopper who's going
- 9:04Speaker 2: to play forty percent of the plays. I mean, Jordan Davis,
- 9:06Speaker 2: who's had a much improved season. He had some plays
- 9:09Speaker 2: that could have been better last game, we're told, so
- 9:12Speaker 2: that was a concern. So look, they're just not run
- 9:15Speaker 2: defense and look Campbell, occasionally he might overrun a play,
- 9:20Speaker 2: but he's actually been better than you think against the run.
- 9:23Speaker 2: They just have to be more consistent. Again, I would
- 9:25Speaker 2: say run defense, Mike. That's something that will get better
- 9:28Speaker 2: and they'll continue to work in the Kobe dem Well,
- 9:30Speaker 2: we'll talk more about this next week. Our thought process.
- 9:35Speaker 2: We talked about this last week when you asked me
- 9:38Speaker 2: a thought process is what he gets clear to play.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And when they don't play a lot of run, they're
- 9:43Speaker 2: they're not a base defense. They don't play a lot
- 9:45Speaker 2: of forty three. They're not Fandrew never has. As a
- 9:47Speaker 2: matter of fact, Bill Pollingon told me the jet of
- 9:50Speaker 2: the legendary General Mancher, who's in the Hall of Fame.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Bill told me, and I asked him about fanser like,
- 9:54Speaker 2: why did they why did you guys fire him? He said, Look,
- 9:57Speaker 2: he doesn't run the state. He doesn't run Tampa two,
- 9:59Speaker 2: which Tony Dungeye ran more portly. He doesn't run a
- 10:02Speaker 2: forty three. He runs a thirty four. He's run this
- 10:04Speaker 2: for decades. He plays a little bit of forty three
- 10:07Speaker 2: in their base. That's it. So it's gonna be hard
- 10:10Speaker 2: to take Ken Lavalina. But there's always a way if
- 10:14Speaker 2: Diana's I mean, you can't struck and be all the
- 10:16Speaker 2: way back right now. But once they think they could
- 10:19Speaker 2: play him, there'll be a way to get Campbell a
- 10:22Speaker 2: little bit of arrest and played to play Dean a
- 10:24Speaker 2: little bit of rundowns.
- 10:26Speaker 1: H He did get asked about Dean today, said he
- 10:27Speaker 1: might be active this week. Well, see, didn't really commit
- 10:30Speaker 1: to what his role would be when he returns. What
- 10:33Speaker 1: are we thinking about, you know, some of the concerns
- 10:36Speaker 1: we had a Dori Jackson seemingly was a concern now
- 10:39Speaker 1: Ringo the last two weeks. He said, possibly Ringo could
- 10:43Speaker 1: be the guy there moving forward. What do we think
- 10:45Speaker 1: about him?
- 10:47Speaker 2: So the reason why I thought Ringo would start a
- 10:50Speaker 2: couple of things. Hey, he's healthy, be he's got length. Now,
- 10:54Speaker 2: what we didn't know is they would use Mitchell in
- 10:59Speaker 2: man coverage and travel a lot on Sutton. Okay, I
- 11:05Speaker 2: mean we thought it would be something we didn't It
- 11:06Speaker 2: would be basically, whenever they did it, he would be
- 11:09Speaker 2: the travel guy on Sutton. Son's got great size, and
- 11:11Speaker 2: he got Mitchell a decent amount of times, but wasn't bad.
- 11:15Speaker 2: But and then you know with the with the broncos Is.
- 11:20Speaker 2: We noted on our premium show they're super deep a receiver,
- 11:23Speaker 2: and that was something that you have to be worry about.
- 11:26Speaker 2: You can't be sticking out a guy like a Dorri
- 11:29Speaker 2: Jackson that it wasn't quite back. So it didn't surprise me.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Now the reason why Fandrew didnsale, we will stick with Ringo.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Ringo gave us some place. He was just okay. They
- 11:40Speaker 2: didn't throw out him a ton. They threw out him
- 11:42Speaker 2: more last this game than they did in the week before.
- 11:45Speaker 2: But again, he's a fourth corner, a Dorrity Jackson on
- 11:48Speaker 2: a if you had a really good start at corner,
- 11:51Speaker 2: you love to be your third, and then everyone would
- 11:53Speaker 2: look better. Backups look better when they don't have to
- 11:55Speaker 2: play Mike. The way is in all sports, and Ringo's
- 11:59Speaker 2: is not gonna be good enough. We've talked about the
- 12:01Speaker 2: stiffness and the ability and ABI we've talked about for
- 12:04Speaker 2: three years. We've probably talked about it fifty times about
- 12:07Speaker 2: the stiffness. You can't get rid of it, and it
- 12:09Speaker 2: did show in a couple of plays and against the run.
- 12:11Speaker 2: Mike if he sees a guy in his area and
- 12:14Speaker 2: his hips aren't turned the right way. It's a problem.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So this is something and we'll talk more about this
- 12:18Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks. Is this is something to
- 12:21Speaker 2: look towards the trade deadline. Cornerback opposite Mitchell is by
- 12:24Speaker 2: farther number one need. I'm not saying pass rush is
- 12:27Speaker 2: not in need, it is, but corner opposite Mitchell is
- 12:29Speaker 2: a major need. Right now?
- 12:30Speaker 1: All right, we just played that sound from Adam Schefter.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Everybody out there who's expecting about ten to twelve trades
- 12:37Speaker 1: at the trade deadline? Right yeah, So you think it's
- 12:39Speaker 1: going to be really active. We'll see if Hollie Roseman
- 12:42Speaker 1: gets active. And I mentioned run defense as well. I
- 12:45Speaker 1: talked about Ojomo not good enough in that aspect of
- 12:49Speaker 1: run devinj you echo it there. What about o Ja
- 12:51Speaker 1: Luri He didn't play the first four weeks and then
- 12:54Speaker 1: got more snapped than Oucha.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I joked on our show with Greg Cosel the inside
- 12:59Speaker 2: the tape show stop today, which is, by the way,
- 13:02Speaker 2: folks just understand we're pointing out what doesn't look good.
- 13:08Speaker 2: They yell at Greg co sol in the comments because
- 13:10Speaker 2: Greg is critical of Hurts. He's not trying to be
- 13:13Speaker 2: telling you this is what it looks like. That he
- 13:16Speaker 2: tells him what it looks like. It's nothing personal. It
- 13:19Speaker 2: If Hurts played out of his mind, great, this would
- 13:22Speaker 2: have been a jail and Hurt show. That's just the
- 13:24Speaker 2: way it is. Until he plays consistently well, the clips
- 13:29Speaker 2: that we show aren't always going to be good. That's
- 13:31Speaker 2: the way it is. I just wanted to say that.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But the guy that we did talk about, Bribe because
- 13:35Speaker 2: he's our Jelari looked really good. Now he played way more.
- 13:39Speaker 2: We played about forty percent of the defensive snaps. That
- 13:41Speaker 2: shocked me. Now, as Vic said, he was asked today
- 13:44Speaker 2: you heard his press conference, it's because he played well.
- 13:47Speaker 2: He left him in good for Vic. Now, clearly, as
- 13:49Speaker 2: we talked about at the start of the season, he
- 13:51Speaker 2: didn't have a good training camp. He had a couple
- 13:53Speaker 2: of good snaps in a preseason game against the Jets.
- 13:55Speaker 2: That was it. So he didn't deserve to be on
- 13:57Speaker 2: the field, and that you earn what you get, Yet
- 14:00Speaker 2: it by performing in practice. He didn't. They were down
- 14:03Speaker 2: two edge rushers. He had to play and he did
- 14:06Speaker 2: a good job. Now, are we expected forty defensive steps
- 14:09Speaker 2: every week? No? But he did a good job and
- 14:12Speaker 2: he's got incredible length and boyd could he dip? That
- 14:15Speaker 2: was really interesting. And that's a good offensive line he
- 14:17Speaker 2: did a good job against. And they face a very
- 14:20Speaker 2: suspect offensive line this week with the Giants.
- 14:23Speaker 1: All right, let's take a look at the Giants because
- 14:26Speaker 1: they beat the Chargers two weeks ago and then lost
- 14:29Speaker 1: to the Saints last week. So who are the New
- 14:33Speaker 1: York Football Giants? What do you need to do to
- 14:36Speaker 1: kind of beat them on Thursday Night, Mike.
- 14:38Speaker 2: They have a really good front. They are not good
- 14:40Speaker 2: at corner at all. They benched Yonty Banks, a former
- 14:42Speaker 2: first rounder out of Maryland. A lot of people are
- 14:46Speaker 2: on the league were wrong on him. There are a
- 14:47Speaker 2: lot of people that Jeff and I talked for that
- 14:48Speaker 2: draft that loved him, and he just has not performed there.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Cordell Flott has no reason to be starting, but he is.
- 14:55Speaker 2: When the Eagles throw, they got to go after him.
- 14:58Speaker 2: That's a guy you have to target in the past game.
- 15:01Speaker 2: That's that's what we expect. Really good at safety, really
- 15:05Speaker 2: good front. You can run against the Giants, I mean
- 15:09Speaker 2: you can do that, and you have to dominate the
- 15:12Speaker 2: Giants right side of when the Eagles are on defense,
- 15:16Speaker 2: you've got to dominate that right side. Germaine Iluminor has
- 15:19Speaker 2: been He's a journeyman right tackle guard. That's a guy that, Mike.
- 15:25Speaker 2: If you can't beat that right side of their line,
- 15:28Speaker 2: I'd be surprised. You don't have to blitz, by the way,
- 15:30Speaker 2: this should not be done. They can if they want,
- 15:33Speaker 2: But this is not a game, Mike where I feel
- 15:35Speaker 2: like you have to really blitz. Because the Eagles defensive
- 15:39Speaker 2: line versus the Giants offensive line, particularly again on the
- 15:43Speaker 2: right side. I mean, it's it's just to me, it's
- 15:46Speaker 2: it's about it's a matchup driven league. And when you
- 15:49Speaker 2: look at Greg Van Roten, who I remember at University
- 15:52Speaker 2: of Pennsylvania, I can't believe he's still playing. He starts
