- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 10th of
- 0:15October and thank you for inviting me into your day.
- 0:19I wonder what you've been up to? Has it been a busy one for you?
- 0:22Have you been achieving great things or have you been
- 0:24frustrated by something you just can't seem to get past, whereas
- 0:29your day just beginning and there's a whole lot of potential
- 0:31ahead wherever you are? However, this finds you so glad
- 0:36that you have chosen to pause for a moment, open up God's Word
- 0:40together with me, and hear what it is that He has to say to us
- 0:44as we today open a new book, which is just a continuation of
- 0:48the story that we have been reading.
- 0:50We finished reading Ezra, Ezra written in the first person
- 0:55voice of Ezra the priest as he returned to Jerusalem.
- 0:59And now we continue in Nehemiah as we hear in the first person
- 1:04voice of Nehemiah, who was a governor appointed in that time
- 1:09back in their homeland of Jerusalem as they are attempting
- 1:13to rebuild the Old City. And you will hear some overlaps
- 1:17in the story between the last book and this book, but this one
- 1:21and the last one, they are not trying to capture a
- 1:24chronological history of this period, but they are capturing
- 1:28the significant and momentous events from a theological
- 1:31perspective about how God and His people were travelling
- 1:35together in this time of re establishment in this place
- 1:39which would continue to be the home of God's people all the way
- 1:44through to the New Testament. So join me as we continue this
- 1:48same story, different voice reading together.
- 1:51Nehemiah chapter 1. These are the memoirs of
- 2:05Nehemiah son of Hakaliah. In late autumn, in the month of
- 2:10Kislev, in the 20th year of King Artaxerxes reign, I was at the
- 2:15fortress of Susa Han and I, one of my brothers, came to visit me
- 2:20with some other men who had just arrived from Judah.
- 2:23I asked them about the Jews who had returned there from
- 2:26captivity and how things were going in Jerusalem.
- 2:29They said to me, Things are not going well for those who return
- 2:33to the province of Judah. They are in great trouble and
- 2:36disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem has been
- 2:39torn down and the gates have been destroyed by fire.
- 2:43When I heard this, I sat down and wept.
- 2:47In fact, for days I mourned, fasted, and prayed to the God of
- 2:52heaven. Then I said, O Lord God of
- 2:56Heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of
- 3:01unfailing love with those who love Him and obey His commands,
- 3:06listen to my prayer. Look down and see me praying
- 3:10night and day for your people. Israel, I confess that we have
- 3:15sinned against you. Yes, even my own family and I
- 3:19have sinned. We have sinned terribly by not
- 3:23obeying the commands, decrees, and regulations that you gave us
- 3:26through your servant Moses. Please remember what you told
- 3:31your servant Moses. If you are unfaithful to me, I
- 3:34will scatter you among the nations.
- 3:37But if you return to Me and obey My commands and live by them,
- 3:42then even if you are exiled to the ends of the earth, I will
- 3:46bring you back to the place I have chosen for my name to be
- 3:51honoured. The people you rescued by your
- 3:54great power and strong hand are your servants.
- 3:59O Lord, please hear my prayer. Listen to the prayers of those
- 4:03of us who delight in honouring You.
- 4:06Please grant me success today by making the King favourable to
- 4:11me. Put it into his heart to be kind
- 4:15to me. In those days I was the King's
- 4:19cupbearer, Our Lord. In Nehemiah's prayer we hear
- 4:32this impossible balancing act between justice and mercy.
- 4:38And we see in your words to Moses so long ago that when your
- 4:43people turn their back on you, there are consequences, and you
- 4:47will scatter them through the nations.
- 4:49But then if they just turn back to you, you gather them up and
- 4:56return them back into your fold to glorify your name.
- 5:01Our Lord, thank You that it doesn't matter how many times we
- 5:05face the wrong way and we end up scattered amongst the ways of
- 5:10this world. That all we need do is turn back
- 5:14to you with a repentant heart. And you wrap your arms around
- 5:19us, and you draw us back to You. Thank you for your kind and
- 5:26faithful forgiveness. Thank you for your unwavering
- 5:31favour for us. We don't deserve it, but yet you
- 5:36give it to us anyway. Thank you Jesus, for coming and
- 5:41for saving us. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for
- 5:45living in our hearts and bringing you, the God of the
- 5:50universe, so near that we can feel your presence, a triune
- 5:55God. You are amazing and we lift you
- 5:57up and we worship you and we praise you and it's in your holy
- 6:03name, 3 in one that we pray. Amen.
