- 0:00Speaker 1: Margaret O'Brien, James Craig, Marsha Hunt, and Keenan Wynn reprise
- 0:05Speaker 1: their Metro Goldwyn Mayer roles in this Luck's adaptation. On
- 0:10Speaker 1: June nineteenth, nineteen forty four, Lux Radio Theater brought Lost
- 0:14Speaker 1: Angel to CBS as episode four hundred forty four, adapted
- 0:18Speaker 1: from the nineteen forty three MGM film. O'Brien plays Alpha,
- 0:23Speaker 1: a six year old orphan raised at the Institute of
- 0:26Speaker 1: Child Psychology as a carefully educated prodigy. When newspaperman Mike
- 0:32Speaker 1: Reagan comes to write about her, his questions about the
- 0:35Speaker 1: ordinary wonders missing from her controlled life lead Alpha into
- 0:39Speaker 1: an unexpected New York adventure, with Katie Mallory and Packy
- 0:43Speaker 1: Rouse along the way. And now we return to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: original broadcast.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Luck presents Hollywood Lux Radio the at Heberns Who Margaret O'Brien,
- 1:09Speaker 2: James Craig, Marsha Hunt, and Keenan Wynn in Lost Angele
- 1:14Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, mister Cecil be the mill.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Greetings from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen. The entire company of
- 1:29Speaker 2: the Lux Radio Theater has been under a magic spell.
- 1:32Speaker 2: This week. We fallen victim to the charm of Miss
- 1:36Speaker 2: Margaret O'Brien, age seven. We have wooed her favor with
- 1:41Speaker 2: ice cream cone and peppermint candace, and she has rewarded
- 1:45Speaker 2: us by treating us as equals. That's about the greatest
- 1:49Speaker 2: compliment that a child can pay to add up co
- 1:52Speaker 2: starring with Margaret, James Craig, Marsha Hunt and Keenan Wynn.
- 1:58Speaker 2: They were all with her and the Metro Goldron Mayor
- 2:01Speaker 2: picture Lost Angels, the drama that takes the futlight in
- 2:04Speaker 2: this theater. Tonight this week Metro Goldrin Mayor is celebrating
- 2:08Speaker 2: twenty years of fine picture making for the new one
- 2:13Speaker 2: that's been much talked about, the Fit Cliffs of Dover.
- 2:17Speaker 2: During those twenty years, the studio has discovered a distinguished
- 2:20Speaker 2: line of famous artists, but none I think more promising
- 2:24Speaker 2: than our little Margaret O'Brien. Lost Angel is a delightful
- 2:29Speaker 2: story of a very small girl who feels a certain
- 2:32Speaker 2: responsibility for the affairs of her friends, particularly affairs of romance.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I believe tonight marks rather a special occasion for the
- 2:41Speaker 2: lux Radio Theater because it's the first time we've had
- 2:44Speaker 2: a star who wasn't born even when the first play
- 2:49Speaker 2: was presented in this national theater by Lux Tilotow, which
- 2:53Speaker 2: means our whole generation has more or less grown up
- 2:56Speaker 2: with our program, the first birthday party, the first day
- 3:00Speaker 2: graduation day. In all of these, our product has played
- 3:04Speaker 2: its own little role. Needless to say, we're firm believers
- 3:08Speaker 2: in the theory that beauty is never too young to
- 3:11Speaker 2: learn about Lux Starlett soo o. Our cast is on
- 3:15Speaker 2: the stage, and here's the curtain for AQ one of
- 3:16Speaker 2: Los Angeles, darring Margaret O'Brien as Alpha, James Craig as Mike,
- 3:22Speaker 2: Marsha Hunt as Katy, and Keenan Wynne as Packie. His
- 3:36Speaker 2: name is Mike Reagan mike' acorner. He doesn't wear his
- 3:40Speaker 2: hat on the back of his head, cigarettes never dangle
- 3:42Speaker 2: from the corner of his mouth, and he has never
- 3:44Speaker 2: considered writing a novel. But in spite of these handicapps,
- 3:49Speaker 2: Mike Reagan is the most promising news gatherer on the
- 3:52Speaker 2: New York Morning Fanscript right now. In fact, he's promising
- 3:56Speaker 2: something to a very bewitching young lady. And I'm awfully sorry, Katie,
- 4:02Speaker 2: but we can go next week. Huh. That's a promise. Well,
- 4:04Speaker 2: if you have to, worst chum, you have to. It's
- 4:06Speaker 2: that pack your roo's case the cops. Just I've got
- 4:09Speaker 2: to do a follow up story.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Okay, next week.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Sandy, Katie, you're a wonderful girl. You know what I
- 4:14Speaker 2: like this about you?
- 4:15Speaker 4: Sure, I have a pretty good voice that pays off
- 4:18Speaker 4: with a pretty good salary from a pretty good night club.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I don't cost you much. You'll find it hard to believe,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but that's not it. The thing I like most is
- 4:25Speaker 2: if you're not one of those Whanny clean Vine dangerish books.
- 4:29Speaker 2: My guy's got work to do. Oh hey, you, Katie,
- 4:31Speaker 2: the boss wants to see you.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Mike.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Let him.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I'll be right there. Okay, Oh hey, I almost forgot
- 4:37Speaker 2: about tonight. Mike, you bring the beer. We've got the dame.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Oh all right, worm squirm, honest, Kate, that's just a
- 4:45Speaker 2: real bun and a Dame's just a poker game.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Oh, just the poker game.
- 4:49Speaker 2: It's not that I want to play poker, but I
- 4:51Speaker 2: took poindred bucks from those pigeons last Tuesday night.
- 4:53Speaker 5: And Tuesday night, yeah, oh yes, oh Lookuesday the night
- 5:00Speaker 5: you stood me up because the rewright man was sick, Katie.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And this racket. There are a lot of things a
- 5:06Speaker 2: guy has to do.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Their obligations, obligations to what Mike, you have only two
- 5:10Speaker 4: real obligations. One is to your job and the other
- 5:13Speaker 4: is to me.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And he seems to be pluffing in both of them.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Didn't They'll tell you I wanted to see you, Mike?
- 5:18Speaker 7: All right?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Please look, Katie, Katie, you're You're absolutely right, darling. Look,
- 5:23Speaker 2: have dinner with me tonight, really, let me have it.
- 5:25Speaker 4: And while I'm making speeches, you'll be figuring out how
- 5:28Speaker 4: you can get away early and still make that poker game.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Oh no, Katie, I'll be listening. I'd be heal if
- 5:34Speaker 2: I didn't. You will come, won't you, Darling? It means
- 5:37Speaker 2: a lot to me. Well, oh that's wonderful, baby. You'll
- 5:41Speaker 2: be sorry, Katie.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Oh all right, pick me up at eight thirty, eight thirty.
- 5:47Speaker 2: You're an angel.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I'm a step goodbye Art, go.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Along, Katie, bye brother. The things you'll get away with now?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Then you wanted to see me Art?
- 5:57Speaker 8: Yeah, when you went to Harvard, did you know a
- 5:58Speaker 8: professor there named Vince Vincent?
- 6:00Speaker 2: Oh? Sure, psychology. He's in town now with the Pickering Institute.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Then drag yourself down there and see they've got a
- 6:06Speaker 2: baby genius, get an interview. But I'm all tied up
- 6:08Speaker 2: with a pack of roose case Packy's in jail. The
- 6:11Speaker 2: case is over, and not quit stalling. Listen, Well, I'm
- 6:13Speaker 2: in no mood for the patter of little feet in
- 6:15Speaker 2: the touch of little hands.
- 6:16Speaker 9: No, okay, there's a poetry show.
- 6:18Speaker 2: That has to be covered. Pickering Institute, Pickering Institute. Yeah,
- 6:24Speaker 2: that's what I thought you said. I'm on my way
- 6:34Speaker 2: to see you again, Reagan.
- 6:36Speaker 8: But as far as the child is concerned, impossible, by
- 6:39Speaker 8: no means.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Ready to contact the press. I understand your point of
- 6:41Speaker 2: view completely. Professor Vinston's imagine the cheap sensational stories it
- 6:45Speaker 2: might be written professors grow genius in hothouse, that sort
- 6:47Speaker 2: of thing exactly. But after all, you know me, and
- 6:49Speaker 2: you know I wentn't very well.
- 6:51Speaker 8: But the article you write must first be submitted to
- 6:53Speaker 8: us for our approval.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Oh sure, sure, And I was a kid just a moment.
- 6:57Speaker 8: There are certain facts I first wish to make clear.
- 7:00Speaker 8: For years, the Pickering Institute searched for a child upon
- 7:02Speaker 8: whom we could make certain experiments that may revolutionize the
- 7:05Speaker 8: entire educational system. Fix years ago, when Alpha were three
- 7:09Speaker 8: days old, she was brought to.
- 7:11Speaker 2: Us by the Foundling Home. Any records of her parent
- 7:13Speaker 2: and whatsoever.
- 7:14Speaker 8: We chose her because we found her physically and mentally
- 7:17Speaker 8: perfect for our purpose. Since then, the Pickering Institute has
- 7:21Speaker 8: been Alpha's home. Here she has had every attention, every kind,
- 7:25Speaker 8: and you've given her the works. We have been her
- 7:27Speaker 8: teachers and her friends. Alpha knows nothing of the outside world, but.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Her knowledge of such subjects as.
- 7:32Speaker 8: Music, geometry, Chinese, and history may startle even Eurregan.
- 7:36Speaker 2: I'm ready to be startled very well.
- 7:38Speaker 8: Go inside and strip I thought you said strip I did.
- 7:43Speaker 8: Doctor Woodring will examine it. If you're in good health.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You may then have a short interview with Alpha. Gee. Thanks,

- 49:22Speaker 8: Let's show miss Marla how you do problems.
- 49:25Speaker 2: You just put those blocks into their proper spaces as
- 49:27Speaker 2: fast as you can. Now, I'll time you ready. Oh,
- 49:32Speaker 2: would you like to have me read to you? We
- 49:36Speaker 2: could go out Alpha and take a nice walk you
- 49:39Speaker 2: and I, Darling.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Would you like to see Mike?
- 49:45Speaker 7: Yes, but do a wan.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Alpha?
- 49:49Speaker 9: Just what was the nature of the magic mister Reagan
- 49:52Speaker 9: showed you?
- 49:53Speaker 2: Oh?
- 49:53Speaker 7: Do you love to see? It was a fine copy
- 49:58Speaker 7: and there was a man who sh light it up.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Oh, but that.
- 50:06Speaker 3: Magic that was just a little kind of what was
- 50:09Speaker 3: the real magic?
- 50:10Speaker 2: Going Louvey people the way you love Mike.
- 50:16Speaker 3: Excuse yes, Katy, there's a person here asking her elpa

- 50:45Speaker 2: everything we can. Oh. Hey, I was just my neighborhood.
- 50:47Speaker 2: I brought a couple of little presents. Hey, Jake, back
- 50:51Speaker 2: up the truck. Turkey said, I see Mike. Yeah, yeah,

- 55:37Speaker 7: What did your plan?
- 55:37Speaker 2: The next week? Mister Dell A delightful comedy, Maga The
- 55:41Speaker 2: timeout screenplay Christmas in July, and our stars will be
- 55:46Speaker 2: Dick Paul and Linda Donnell. Christmas in July is the
- 55:50Speaker 2: story of a boy and a girl in love, and
- 55:53Speaker 2: that's not likely to go out of style toon. But
- 55:56Speaker 2: this particular drama has a gaiety and charm that make
- 56:00Speaker 2: it a perfect way to welcome the coming of summer.
- 56:03Speaker 2: I remember the picture had a lot of surprises, seb
- 56:06Speaker 2: good night, good night, red night night. I have passed
- 56:11Speaker 2: off the comments of whatever I had. One I have
- 56:19Speaker 2: sponsored to make it the buck stile of soak. Find
- 56:22Speaker 2: me in inviting you to be with us again next
- 56:24Speaker 2: Monday night, when the Lux Radio Theater presents Dick Powell
- 56:28Speaker 2: and Linda Donell in Christmas in July. The decesser be
- 56:33Speaker 2: the melk Ron Holly Wood. And now here's the question
- 56:44Speaker 2: from Uncle Sam to housewives everywhere. If you had roast
- 56:48Speaker 2: or stew or soup for dinner tonight, did you make
- 56:51Speaker 2: sure that every drop of waist fat was poured into
- 56:53Speaker 2: the salvage tins, even the burner black crippings from the
- 56:56Speaker 2: roasting pan. That fat turned into your butcher tomorrow will
- 57:00Speaker 2: be made into war materials and rush to our fighting men.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Perhaps it will help to make the self a drug
- 57:05Speaker 2: that eases a wounded soldier's pain. But the tannic acid
- 57:08Speaker 2: needed to treat as burns. There are countless other military
- 57:12Speaker 2: uses for that waist, kitchen fat of yours if needed,
- 57:15Speaker 2: for synthetic rubber, parachute material, and many life saving medicines.
- 57:19Speaker 2: Right now, the heavy fighting in France makes the need
- 57:22Speaker 2: more urgent than ever. Before you throw away a single
