- 0:06Speaker 1: This is Kevin's Sportspirit Daily here on one of five
- 0:09Speaker 1: point nine FM, a Radio Folkston bringing you the folks
- 0:12Speaker 1: to and a high sports show. On today's show, we
- 0:18Speaker 1: bring you the local cricket reports. We've got some news
- 0:22Speaker 1: on the Mixed Friday Hockey League. We've got news of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the first ever Radnor Park Junior Park Run and an
- 0:29Speaker 1: update on the Senior Folkston Park Run's tenth birthday this month.
- 0:34Speaker 1: We also have an update on another friend of mine
- 0:36Speaker 1: who took a tumble in the harbor Wall bang.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Of Beach Run.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And our special guest today is Jody Jackman, who on
- 0:42Speaker 1: Saturday is running one hundred miles. Yes you heard that right,
- 0:47Speaker 1: one one hundred miles. She must be bonkers, but we'll
- 0:50Speaker 1: find out later. And what else have you got? Oh yeah,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we're gonna chuck in a bit of triathlon news local
- 0:58Speaker 1: ones after the victor in the Olympics. So in the
- 1:02Speaker 1: meantime let's have a bit of share all crap bord.
- 1:22Speaker 1: A cracking way to start a show. I love starting
- 1:25Speaker 1: the show with a really lovely and that was a
- 1:26Speaker 1: nice kind of summary song. It's it's been a bit
- 1:29Speaker 1: warm out there, isn't it it's been. It's not so
- 1:31Speaker 1: sunny today, but it's still warm. And yeah, it's a
- 1:33Speaker 1: bit humid with us. Brits are not used to it.
- 1:35Speaker 1: We normally have to go abroad to field like this. Okay,
- 1:39Speaker 1: now I'm going to start with some devastating news about
- 1:42Speaker 1: the closure of the Folks and Sports Center by reading
- 1:45Speaker 1: out an official statement. Okay, this is an official statement
- 1:48Speaker 1: from the Folks and Sports Center Trust. It's with deep
- 1:52Speaker 1: regret that the Trustees of Folks and Sports Center Trust
- 1:55Speaker 1: must advise the charity can no longer afford to remain operational.
- 1:59Speaker 1: The current national, indeed worldwide situation has seen a dramatic
- 2:03Speaker 1: increase in the Trust's costs and locally decline in income
- 2:06Speaker 1: as many people struggle with their own finances. Therefore, the
- 2:10Speaker 1: charity has now arrived at the point where there is
- 2:12Speaker 1: no option but to accept defeat. The Trustees remain ever
- 2:16Speaker 1: grateful to our management team and our amazing staff who
- 2:19Speaker 1: have battled through the last four years and in many
- 2:21Speaker 1: cases have made personal sacrifices to try and keep the
- 2:24Speaker 1: sporty going. But we have now lost the battle. Many
- 2:28Speaker 1: thanks to our customers who, for many generations of their
- 2:30Speaker 1: families have grown up with the Sports Center, who have
- 2:33Speaker 1: been proud to have been part of the journey, having
- 2:36Speaker 1: seen so many changes over the years and been all
- 2:39Speaker 1: the better for the fantastic facilities on their doorstep. Now,
- 2:42Speaker 1: over the next few days, we will be appointing an
- 2:45Speaker 1: independent administrator to take us through the next steps, and
- 2:48Speaker 1: we ask you to keep a lookout on our website
- 2:51Speaker 1: and social media platforms for any updates. Meanwhile, please be
- 2:55Speaker 1: assured that we will not be drawing any direct debit
- 2:58Speaker 1: membership payments on the first of August twenty twenty four.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Isn't with much sadness that we must say goodbye, thank you,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and we wish everyone all the very best. Now that
- 3:08Speaker 1: was officially launched yesterday or the day before from the
- 3:12Speaker 1: trustees of the Folks and Sports Center Trust. Now, let
- 3:16Speaker 1: me just clear this one up. I'm a volunteer sports presenter.
- 3:20Speaker 1: I've had no official training. I don't do controversy, I
- 3:23Speaker 1: don't do blame politics, strong opinions, etc. On this show.
- 3:27Speaker 1: And I'm just as shocked as you of this terrible news.
- 3:31Speaker 1: So all I do is support local sport men and
- 3:34Speaker 1: ladies and youth. Now for many years, on and off
- 3:38Speaker 1: Tessa from The Tessa the Managers has come on the
- 3:41Speaker 1: show and we have nothing but sporty admiration and progress,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and she's just too devastated to talk about it now. Now,
- 3:52Speaker 1: one of the biggest things that will be missing is
- 3:54Speaker 1: the swimming pool, which affects the community schools. It's just
- 3:59Speaker 1: so many people now. The sports center opened back in
- 4:03Speaker 1: nineteen seventy two. That's fifty two years ago. We all
- 4:07Speaker 1: grew up with it, taking it for granted. It's on
- 4:09Speaker 1: our doorstep. I've got three children, they all learned to
- 4:13Speaker 1: swim at the sports center. My eldest is now forty one.
- 4:18Speaker 1: My partner, Sue's got a grandson. He's five, just learning
- 4:21Speaker 1: to swim. He's done two lessons. You can't go anymore. So,
- 4:25Speaker 1: as the statement says, keep an eye on the official
- 4:28Speaker 1: media platforms for updates. There's a lot of stuff posted
- 4:32Speaker 1: on official on certain social media platforms, some of it
- 4:36Speaker 1: a bit volatile, but just pay attention to the official
- 4:40Speaker 1: media platforms for updates. Please go to my page for
- 4:43Speaker 1: a petition. You might be aware there's a petition to
- 4:46Speaker 1: keep the sports Center open. This is kind of like
- 4:49Speaker 1: a silent support if you like, and when I checked
- 4:52Speaker 1: it this morning, there was over four thousand signatures. This
- 4:55Speaker 1: is the brainshold of a lady called Image in House,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and what a good idea it is. So let's be
- 5:00Speaker 1: positive about it. Let's see if it will come back.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Hopefully someone will step in, and let's just hope that
- 5:07Speaker 1: in the future things will take a turn for the better. Right, Okay,
- 5:12Speaker 1: that's a little beurable sad bit about it. So what
- 5:15Speaker 1: we're going to do now is play a cracking tune
- 5:17Speaker 1: to get you back in the mood. We've got a
- 5:19Speaker 1: really loaded show he is today, So I'm about to
- 5:21Speaker 1: listen to take that and relight my fire. I really
- 5:39Speaker 1: might fire. There has a bit more idea, a bit
- 5:41Speaker 1: of a lively old song. Let's just keep the show
- 5:44Speaker 1: in a correct mood. This is a sports show and
- 5:46Speaker 1: we want everyone to be in a happy mood in
- 5:48Speaker 1: joining this sport. Okay, now, today our special guest is
- 5:52Speaker 1: Ultra Runner, and our other special special guests who might
- 5:56Speaker 1: remain silent, we don't know, but we might talk are
- 5:59Speaker 1: into saying hello. It was Jody's a thirteen year old
- 6:03Speaker 1: daughter Ruby. So Jody, how are you? I'm very well, Kevin,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I'd lovely to see you and to see you Ruby.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Of course.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Now, Jody, on Saturday, you're taking on a massive challenge,
- 6:13Speaker 1: so tell our listeners first of all exactly what you're doing.
- 6:17Speaker 3: I am taking part in the North Downs Way one hundred.
- 6:20Speaker 3: It is run by a Centurion running. I am going
- 6:23Speaker 3: to start at Farnham Leisure Center in Surrey at seven
- 6:27Speaker 3: am and I will follow the North Downs Way until
- 6:30Speaker 3: I get back to Ashford at the Juli Ro Stadium
- 6:33Speaker 3: at some point before one o'clock on Sunday lunchtime.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Okay, but did you tell their listeners how far it was?
- 6:40Speaker 3: It's actually one hundred and three. Got to do one
- 6:43Speaker 3: hundred miles in a park right at the end. Well,
- 6:45Speaker 3: I'll meet you at the three mile point and do
- 6:47Speaker 3: the last three miles. So now tell us about a
- 6:52Speaker 3: bit about your running background and how you I don't know,
- 6:55Speaker 3: how do you progress? If you call it that to
- 6:57Speaker 3: being a ultra runner. I originally started running after I
- 7:02Speaker 3: had my son to lose weight. I started actually with
- 7:06Speaker 3: Raceful Life what would have been twenty twenty one years
- 7:10Speaker 3: ago now. Then I signed up to London Marathon, thinking
- 7:13Speaker 3: I'd only do one London Marathon and somehow along the way.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I've it's got all a bit wrong than I found
- 7:20Speaker 3: myself doing ultras. I think I got the bug for marathons,
- 7:25Speaker 3: and then it was what can I challenge myself to next?
- 7:31Speaker 1: And yeah, so let me explain that to the listeners
- 7:34Speaker 1: that an ultra is anything above a marathon.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 7:37Speaker 4: That's correct?
- 7:38Speaker 2: So what was your first ultra distance?
- 7:40Speaker 4: Can you remember a cliff top challenge?
- 7:42Speaker 3: I was, I've done the fifty five mile that was
- 7:45Speaker 3: my first ultra.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but that didn't seem so long ago, really, five
- 7:49Speaker 1: or six years ago?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Your first one? Yeah?
- 7:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I mean cast your mind back to that day,
- 7:56Speaker 1: two o'clock in the morning. Then at Hastings hour you
- 7:59Speaker 1: feeling then your first ultra I.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Was terrified and if I'm honest, fifty miles, hundred miles.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Even now, I know Saturday morning I will be terrified
- 8:09Speaker 3: again to that start line. But once you start running
- 8:14Speaker 3: it all sorts settles down and it feel fine.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Good Now, I mean the clifftop challenge fifty five that's
- 8:22Speaker 1: only halfway, isn't it. Of what you're doingday, Yeah, too
- 8:26Speaker 1: much and try not to depress you too much on
- 8:29Speaker 1: the show. It's Okay, let's go back and take our
- 8:33Speaker 1: minds back to the clifftop challenge. I mean, how do
- 8:35Speaker 1: you train? How far in a training run would you
- 8:38Speaker 1: do for a fifty five mile.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Up to about twenty to twenty five miles for a
- 8:44Speaker 3: training mile?
- 8:45Speaker 1: Right?
- 8:45Speaker 4: Key is consistent?
- 8:47Speaker 3: See getting out at least four or five times a week.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Generally do too long back to back run.
- 8:53Speaker 3: So I do sort of a twenty or twenty five
- 8:55Speaker 3: mile run one day, then maybe your ten or twelve
- 8:58Speaker 3: mile run the second day. Try a name for sort
- 9:01Speaker 3: of between a forty and sixty mile a week over
- 9:03Speaker 3: a number of I.
- 9:04Speaker 1: See, so it's kind of mileage per week that you're
- 9:07Speaker 1: trying to log up rather than do you know, thirty
- 9:10Speaker 1: thirty five miles all in one go?
- 9:11Speaker 3: You don't need to go way up close to the
- 9:14Speaker 3: training did you?
- 9:16Speaker 1: Did you learn that from? I mean, is there such
- 9:19Speaker 1: a thing as a training program for an ultra runner?
- 9:21Speaker 3: Or there are training programs out there? There are a
- 9:24Speaker 3: lot of coaches you can use for ultra programs. I've
- 9:29Speaker 3: actually got a book that's got a training plan in
- 9:31Speaker 3: the back. I use that for my first hundred. Pick
- 9:34Speaker 3: that out as a guide and then I tweaked it
- 9:36Speaker 3: according to my lifestyle, knowing what I could fit in,
- 9:40Speaker 3: what I couldn't fit in based on my energy levels,
- 9:44Speaker 3: family commitments, work, things like that.
- 9:46Speaker 1: So you just said there that you for your first
- 9:49Speaker 1: hundred So have you run one hundred miles before I've.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Done South Down's Way one hundred three years ago.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Okay, Well, i'll tell you what We're going to talk
- 9:57Speaker 1: about that in the second half. But basically what I'm
- 10:00Speaker 1: trying to get to in the first half is things
- 10:03Speaker 1: that keep you going. You know, things that we've talked
- 10:06Speaker 1: about training. But I meant you've got a young family.
- 10:11Speaker 1: You know you've got to what should die out you
- 10:13Speaker 1: get tired, So tell us about you if you like
- 10:15Speaker 1: a normal week in the life of an ultra runner.
- 10:18Speaker 3: My children, thankfully are now at an age they're quite
- 10:20Speaker 3: self sufficient, so Ruby is my youngest at thirteen. I've
- 10:24Speaker 3: got a very very understanding family that when I'm up
- 10:28Speaker 3: at six o'clock on a Saturday morning to go for
- 10:30Speaker 3: my long run.
- 10:33Speaker 4: They're very patient.
- 10:34Speaker 3: When I roll back in at sort of lunch time
- 10:36Speaker 3: and we're still waiting to go out somewhere again with
- 10:40Speaker 3: my training plan, I know that the long runs will
- 10:43Speaker 3: leave me tired, so I try and factor them in
- 10:46Speaker 3: on the days that I'm not working, or I have
- 10:49Speaker 3: been doing some training runs on a Friday, which means
- 10:52Speaker 3: that Ruby's out at school and it doesn't affect my family's.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean you said about the tiredness. I mean
- 11:01Speaker 1: you've got a young family to keep, the house to run,
- 11:05Speaker 1: not leading not to a race. But during your training,
- 11:08Speaker 1: do you sleep well or is it are you still
- 11:11Speaker 1: are you still running that race? No?
- 11:14Speaker 3: I generally sleep quite well. It's not too bad. I
- 11:19Speaker 3: could probably do with going to bed a little bit earlier,
- 11:21Speaker 3: but with a teenager now doesn't want to go to bed,
- 11:24Speaker 3: But no, miss Sleep's okay. I'm fortunate to work part time.
- 11:30Speaker 3: I'm self employed, so during the day I will be
- 11:34Speaker 3: found having a power app if I'm not running.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Right, And what about things like diet. You obviously have
- 11:39Speaker 1: to watch the energy stuff.
- 11:40Speaker 3: I generally eat quite a balanced, healthy diner. I don't
- 11:44Speaker 3: eat any specific food. Make sure I get all my
- 11:47Speaker 3: fruit and vegs a day just for the nutrients. Make
- 11:50Speaker 3: sure I've got enough protein intake to help film a
- 11:54Speaker 3: recovery as well.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Right, Okay, And basically I mean the motivation, what keeps
- 12:01Speaker 1: you going? What makes you sign up to an ultra?
- 12:04Speaker 1: Is it just something that's inside you you've got to
- 12:06Speaker 1: get out.
- 12:06Speaker 3: It seems a brilliant idea. At the same the camaraderie
- 12:10Speaker 3: out there, I think, particularly once you get to the
- 12:12Speaker 3: longer distance and the trail stuff, it really is amazing.
- 12:17Speaker 4: South Bounds.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Why I actually fell over in the race cup money
- 12:20Speaker 3: is open. Someone else's crew found me a little while later,
- 12:24Speaker 3: took me into Evan, patched me all up.
- 12:27Speaker 4: I was okay, and sought me.
- 12:28Speaker 1: On the way, wound you up and yeah, but we
- 12:33Speaker 1: were saying, you know, just not so long ago about
- 12:37Speaker 1: you had a tumble this year at Clifftalk Challenge and
- 12:40Speaker 1: one of your colleagues did as well. Yeah, tell us
- 12:41Speaker 1: about that.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I was running with Ron Bell at the fifty five miles,
- 12:45Speaker 3: so it was pitch black Saturday morning, started raining. Ron
- 12:50Speaker 3: is now known as Holy Ron because he fell down
- 12:52Speaker 3: a bit about three holes within the first five miles.
- 12:56Speaker 3: We hit the start of the Royal Military Canal and
- 12:59Speaker 3: there was a wooden brig wh what rain.
- 13:03Speaker 4: I just went down.
- 13:04Speaker 3: I ended up landing on my thighs, had a nice
- 13:06Speaker 3: big lump o but yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 2: I didn't end up in the canal.
- 13:10Speaker 3: Then, well, Ron said, it did look like I was
- 13:12Speaker 3: about to slide under the railings into the canow so
- 13:15Speaker 3: we looked to other panics when I looked at him.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But yeah, thankfully there was no significant injuries. Picked myself
- 13:21Speaker 3: up and carried on.
- 13:23Speaker 4: We got to the end.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Oh you got.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I bet you've got some stories to tell from the
- 13:26Speaker 1: cliff Top channels, but we won't repeat them on it,
- 13:29Speaker 1: I think because I know some of the runners that
- 13:30Speaker 1: you were running with. Right, Okay, we're going to take
- 13:33Speaker 1: a little break now, and when we come back, we're
- 13:35Speaker 1: going to actually talk about the race day, your kit
- 13:38Speaker 1: and just trainers and stuff like that, getting lost or whatever.
- 13:42Speaker 1: But in the meantime, I got this lovely little record
- 13:44Speaker 1: and it's a song by the Kaiser Chiefs and it
- 13:48Speaker 1: needs no introduction. Well, what a great song.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Ruby Ruby, Ruby Ruby.
- 14:14Speaker 1: We were singing and dancing here in the studio because
- 14:17Speaker 1: we are joined by a thirteen year old Jody, sorry,
- 14:22Speaker 1: Jody's daughter, Ruby Ruby, Come right in, come right in.
- 14:25Speaker 5: Now.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You you do a little bit of sport yourself.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Don't you.
- 14:28Speaker 4: What do you do cheer?
- 14:30Speaker 2: Cheer?
- 14:30Speaker 1: Or are you a cheerleader, are you yeah, come right
- 14:33Speaker 1: in that's it? Yeah? Yeah, okay? And where do you
- 14:35Speaker 1: do that?
- 14:37Speaker 4: I do it in Dover?
- 14:38Speaker 2: Do you twisters what they called twisters?
- 14:43Speaker 1: Vista Twisters?
- 14:44Speaker 5: I know?
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, because I know some of the Vista Twisters,
- 14:48Speaker 1: and I know that they are a terrific group, and
- 14:52Speaker 1: I do believe they they've even gone to America?
- 14:55Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 14:56Speaker 1: How good would that be? You saving up by you?
- 14:58Speaker 1: Do you want to get to America one day?
- 15:01Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:01Speaker 2: It would be good.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Now, what do you do you one of these ones
- 15:03Speaker 1: that clons right to the top or you were the
- 15:05Speaker 1: ones one that right out of the bottom when they
- 15:07Speaker 1: all jump.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Up on one of the ones at the bottom?
- 15:09Speaker 1: Are you actually now? You said that last last year,
- 15:14Speaker 1: the year before we went to watch Kent play cricket. Oh,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and the the Visa Twisters were there?
- 15:21Speaker 2: Were you there?
- 15:22Speaker 1: Not? No? But I mean they do get about two
- 15:25Speaker 1: shows and demonstrations, don't they. Yeah? Well, great, Well, I'm
- 15:29Speaker 1: glad you've had a little chat and good luck, and
- 15:31Speaker 1: let's hope you get to America because then you can
- 15:33Speaker 1: come into the radio station and tell us all about it.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, all.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Right, I was switching back to you now, Jody. Jody,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you just let it slip out that you have done
- 15:43Speaker 1: one hundred miles before, so just briefly tell us what
- 15:46Speaker 1: was that?
- 15:46Speaker 3: Like, what did you do in South Down's Way one hundred?
- 15:49Speaker 3: That was three years ago. I was originally due to
- 15:52Speaker 3: run in twenty twenty COVID hit so I trained, it
- 15:57Speaker 3: got canceled literally sort of eight weeks before my race.
- 16:01Speaker 1: That must have been devastating. If you've got all that
- 16:03Speaker 1: training here, it just tough.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Then it got rescheduled for the November twenty twenty, so
- 16:09Speaker 3: I trained all the way up. Then we went into
- 16:12Speaker 3: lockdown about five days before my race, so training blok
- 16:15Speaker 3: two gone. I finally got to run it in June
- 16:18Speaker 3: twenty twenty one. Made the start line. It come out
- 16:22Speaker 3: really really hot, I think twenty seven degrees and on
- 16:26Speaker 3: the South Downs it's very exposed chalk, so the heat
- 16:29Speaker 3: just bounces straight back up.
- 16:31Speaker 2: So that was a real education. Then.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, So I mean, have you done a reki
- 16:36Speaker 1: on the North Downs Way? How's this terrain compared that I've.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Done the last half So I've got to thank christ
- 16:43Speaker 3: Dennison for taking me on a night run first, and
- 16:46Speaker 3: we got the train up to Oxford and done Oxford
- 16:48Speaker 3: back to Deptlin and then my pacer, John Fitzgerald, who
- 16:53Speaker 3: doesn't live locally, he's coming up on the day and
- 16:57Speaker 3: we've done a w reky from debtling back to Ashford
- 17:00Speaker 3: and the train's actually quite nice. The hills is steeper,
- 17:03Speaker 3: it's a bit more technical with tree routes and steps,
- 17:07Speaker 3: but yeah, there was quite a few runnable bits.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Whether they're runnable towards the end of one hundred.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I'll decide we have little snooze in the hedge, so
- 17:19Speaker 1: let's get back to the serious side of things. Things
- 17:21Speaker 1: like your KIT safety course directions. I don't know run
- 17:28Speaker 1: us through things like that.
- 17:29Speaker 3: And the centur room maces are very well marked anyway.
- 17:32Speaker 3: They have red and white ticker tape at all the
- 17:34Speaker 3: points where you might go wrong. I have got a
- 17:37Speaker 3: GPX file on my watch as well. We've use that
- 17:40Speaker 3: for the rerecords, so we sort of knew roughly where
- 17:43Speaker 3: the turning was to follow that. Yeah, KIT, I train
- 17:48Speaker 3: with as much as I can. You have quite a
- 17:51Speaker 3: lot of mandatory KIT. You've got to take two head
- 17:53Speaker 3: torches capacity to carry a liter of water, fully.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Charge mobile phone.
- 17:59Speaker 3: I will generally take a spare power bank with me
- 18:02Speaker 3: with cables from my watch and my phone as well,
- 18:05Speaker 3: just in case they start losing power throughout the race,
- 18:08Speaker 3: plus waterproofs emergency base layers, because if you do stop suddenly,
- 18:14Speaker 3: even though it's summer, once you stop running and if
- 18:16Speaker 3: you're a bit sweater you can cool down really really quick,
- 18:20Speaker 3: it can become an emergency situation.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I suppose you learn a lot about if you like
- 18:24Speaker 1: your body and how it reacts to stop start. And
- 18:27Speaker 1: you know, as you said, in the North Down so
- 18:31Speaker 1: no the South Downs way, you know, extreme temperatures. Yeah yeah, okay,
- 18:35Speaker 1: So do you check the weatherful coast or you just
- 18:38Speaker 1: don't bother?
- 18:39Speaker 2: You know, is what it is? Yeah?
- 18:44Speaker 1: Yeah, And what'll we be into now Thursday? How's it
- 18:47Speaker 1: looking for Saturday?
- 18:49Speaker 3: I think it's going to be up to about twenty
- 18:51Speaker 3: three degrees, but the humidity is still running higher, which
- 18:54Speaker 3: is a little bit of a concern. Hopefully once I'm
- 18:57Speaker 3: under tree cover, then take some of the heat out
- 19:01Speaker 3: of it.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Just take me through that last little bit. You say
- 19:04Speaker 1: you end up with the Julie Rose Stadium. I mean,
- 19:07Speaker 1: do you run through places like why or do you
- 19:10Speaker 1: just tell me?
- 19:10Speaker 2: Can you remember?
- 19:11Speaker 4: Just trying to think where we turn off. We don't.
- 19:13Speaker 3: We don't go through why we turn off before that
- 19:17Speaker 3: there's a private estate we come through. I think it's
- 19:20Speaker 3: east well, yeah, around the yeah, the down past the
- 19:26Speaker 3: Kennington Carvery and out past Conning Brook round that way.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a bit all I know. So yeah, I
- 19:36Speaker 1: mean emergencies. If there's an emergency, you just got to
- 19:38Speaker 1: get on the phone and there's marshals at certain points.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Trackers on got a live tracking link, so if I
- 19:45Speaker 3: do wander off course because I've missed a turning, people
- 19:49Speaker 3: can actually find me and say you need to go course.
- 19:53Speaker 2: That's good giance.
- 19:56Speaker 3: It's mandatory that you have the right h Q and
- 19:59Speaker 3: the medics phone understored in your phone as well, just
- 20:02Speaker 3: in case. And it's not just about you, it's also
- 20:04Speaker 3: about if you come across a medical incident, you.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Might have come across another runner. That's yeah, and it.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Has happened, not to me personally, but there has been
- 20:14Speaker 3: cases where people have administered CPR.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Out all right.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Yeah, so the run starts at seven o'clock in the morning.
- 20:22Speaker 1: You've got one hundred miles to do obviously, no hotels
- 20:24Speaker 1: or campsites, just going yea, and how far apart are
- 20:29Speaker 1: like feed stations.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Some of them are about seven to nine miles apart.
- 20:35Speaker 3: There's a few through sort of just after the midway point.
- 20:38Speaker 3: I think we've got one that's eleven miles from one
- 20:41Speaker 3: point to the other, right, So that's going to be
- 20:42Speaker 3: quite a long old slob in the middle of the night.
- 20:45Speaker 3: You're tired, Yeah right, yeah, yeah, but it's just mine,
- 20:48Speaker 3: Dave Matter, Yeah, yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 1: Well that is exactly what it is, isn't it. It's
- 20:52Speaker 1: it's and how do you how do you do it?
- 20:54Speaker 2: In your head?
- 20:54Speaker 1: Do you think, Okay, I've got eleven miles to the
- 20:57Speaker 1: next fee station. You don't think about the Juli Rose state.
- 21:00Speaker 1: You just think about the next check.
- 21:01Speaker 3: Points checkpoint, because if you think about the whole distance,
- 21:04Speaker 3: it's terrifying. So you know you can cover eleven miles
- 21:09Speaker 3: Sometimes I'll be right, I'm going to run up to
- 21:11Speaker 3: that tree on the left one for a bit and
- 21:13Speaker 3: then walk for a bit and give yourself a little breather, yeah,
- 21:16Speaker 3: and then just keep.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Moving forward because I don't know, I can't expect anybody
- 21:21Speaker 1: to actually run for one hundred miles.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I don't know. Perhaps they do, do they?
- 21:25Speaker 3: I don't know the speak of some of them at
- 21:27Speaker 3: the front of the race. I've not actually seen their ability,
- 21:31Speaker 3: but there are times indicate that they may well run
- 21:34Speaker 3: far more than they walk.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Just we haven't discussed this, but just off the top
- 21:40Speaker 1: of your head, if you get this done, which you
- 21:41Speaker 1: will do successfully, is there any other sort of ultra
- 21:45Speaker 1: challenges you would like to take on?
- 21:48Speaker 2: Let's forget about England any anywhere in the world.
- 21:51Speaker 1: I mean there are some scary places, aren't there.
- 21:55Speaker 3: I haven't Oh no, this run Junes, and I think
- 22:00Speaker 3: cost of that as well.
- 22:01Speaker 4: You're probably talking about twelve thousand.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Pounds Oh my word.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Really yeah, yeah, there's one in the UK, Lakeland fifty.
- 22:08Speaker 3: They've just won it last weekend. That looks good.
- 22:11Speaker 4: It's an unmarked course.
- 22:12Speaker 3: So I've got work on navigation before I feel I
- 22:15Speaker 3: can go and do that one.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Well, it's so good of you to come in, Jody.
- 22:20Speaker 1: I was looking back through the archives and it seems
- 22:24Speaker 1: that once a year you come in always ahead of
- 22:26Speaker 1: a big race, isn't it.
- 22:27Speaker 2: You know?
- 22:28Speaker 1: And I think it's time to just say a few
- 22:33Speaker 1: thank you. There must be loads of people out there
- 22:35Speaker 1: that have been behind you and got you. I mean
- 22:38Speaker 1: you're doing it for them as well, and so gone
- 22:41Speaker 1: then far away.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Thank you to my husband Alex for picking up all
- 22:46Speaker 3: the flag at home when I'm not there, for the
- 22:48Speaker 3: dog walking when I've disappeared out for hours. For Ruby
- 22:52Speaker 3: for being understanding, my mum for helping out with the
- 22:55Speaker 3: kids and looking after the dog while I'm out. My
- 22:58Speaker 3: friend Chris Dennison who supported me on some of my
- 23:01Speaker 3: longer and nighttime running, and also my pacer John Fitzgerald,
- 23:06Speaker 3: although he's not local so you probably won't hear that.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Well, we're going to get this, hopefully get this out
- 23:11Speaker 1: on a podcast, so at some point, probably after the race,
- 23:16Speaker 1: it will be up and everyone yew, we can share
- 23:18Speaker 1: this and even Ruby will be famous. I think, yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 1: because I'm hopeous you come in in a few years
- 23:24Speaker 1: time and tell us about her trip to America with
- 23:26Speaker 1: a bit of luck. Right, I think I've got all
- 23:28Speaker 1: my notes here and I just can't think of anything else.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But you just got to. I mean, I did a
- 23:35Speaker 1: lot of running in my lifetime. To run a marathon
- 23:39Speaker 1: was like absolutely horrendous, but to think that someone's going
- 23:43Speaker 1: to run one hundred miles four marathons back to back almost.
- 23:48Speaker 1: I just admire you, Jodie, and we've seen across the
- 23:53Speaker 1: line at the Cliff Top Challenge and you always come
- 23:55Speaker 1: in smiling. I just hope you're smiling on Sunday, the
- 23:58Speaker 1: day I stopped smiling.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's right.
- 24:02Speaker 1: So good luck to you. And once again, Ruby, thank
- 24:05Speaker 1: you for coming in and telling us about the Visita Twisters.
- 24:08Speaker 2: And so it just leaves me to say good luck
- 24:11Speaker 2: to you.
- 24:11Speaker 4: Thank you very much. Kevin.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Okay, thanks right, Okay, Now I'm going to dive in
- 24:15Speaker 1: here and say there's a little song I'm going to
- 24:17Speaker 1: play now, and it's for a lady that took a
- 24:22Speaker 1: bit of a tumble at the at the Harbor Wall
- 24:26Speaker 1: Banger Race. And I just found this and I just
- 24:28Speaker 1: had to play it because this title is called this
- 24:32Speaker 1: is what I think she was doing.
- 24:33Speaker 2: She was counting stars.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Harby hab Los and see dreaming about the things a
- 24:41Speaker 5: week the baby Harby ha'ben playing hard and no more
- 24:49Speaker 5: counting dolls will be accounting stars.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Well that was one Republic and a song called counting Stars,
- 25:04Speaker 1: and that was especially for a lady who we're going
- 25:06Speaker 1: to tell you about her story now. If you remember
- 25:09Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago, I told you about Liz
- 25:11Speaker 1: Lawrence at the Harbor Wallbanger beach run, who I caught
- 25:14Speaker 1: on camera falling over just yards from the finish line,
- 25:17Speaker 1: where it was all very humorous and we played a
- 25:20Speaker 1: couple of songs for her.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Excuse me.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Well, in the same race, one of Lizzi's friends, who
- 25:25Speaker 1: I briefly met, also had a fall, but at the
- 25:27Speaker 1: time it was a bit more serious and I didn't
- 25:30Speaker 1: want to mention it. However, I'm pleased to say that
- 25:32Speaker 1: Janice Wand is fully recovered. So after chatting with Janis
- 25:36Speaker 1: during the week, let me tell you her story. Janis
- 25:41Speaker 1: was into the last mile but her left foot was hurting, so,
- 25:44Speaker 1: being a beach run on sands, she decided to remove
- 25:47Speaker 1: her trainers, but she then somehow managed to trip over
- 25:50Speaker 1: and take a fall. She hit her head on a
- 25:52Speaker 1: rock and found out later she'd sprained her wrist and
- 25:55Speaker 1: her ankle, but she got up to finish the race.
- 25:59Speaker 1: She felt fine. After five minutes or so of crossing
- 26:01Speaker 1: the line, she started to feel dizzy and her friends
- 26:04Speaker 1: took her to the first eight tent. It seemed that
- 26:07Speaker 1: the shock of the fall caused her blood pressure to
- 26:09Speaker 1: drop and it wouldn't come back up again. It took
- 26:12Speaker 1: a couple of hours for Janie to recover, but thanks
- 26:15Speaker 1: to the first aiders in the tent, whom Janie couldn't
- 26:18Speaker 1: thank enough for looking after her, She's Nail's right as rain.
- 26:22Speaker 1: Janice would also like to thank her son Travis and
- 26:24Speaker 1: her niece Hannah, a friend Helen, who bought Janie's three
- 26:28Speaker 1: legged spaniel. I had to chuckle this, sorry, Janis. She
- 26:32Speaker 1: bought Janis's three legged spaniel to see her, her sister Susan,
- 26:36Speaker 1: and of course her running buddies Liz, Sharon, Dawn and
- 26:39Speaker 1: Chris who helped us to the first eight tent in
- 26:41Speaker 1: the first place. So Janie, thanks for sharing your story
- 26:45Speaker 1: and it's good to hear your recovery went well. And
- 26:48Speaker 1: now this story comes one very important fact. When running
- 26:52Speaker 1: offend organizers put on a race, medical care has to
- 26:55Speaker 1: be provided and it all adds to the cost. But
- 26:58Speaker 1: on that odd occasion, Now I always say, if I'm
- 27:01Speaker 1: at a race and thanking everybody, I normally have a
- 27:04Speaker 1: chat with the first eight people.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Have you been busy.
- 27:07Speaker 1: No, not today, and they say, and I'm grateful, but
- 27:10Speaker 1: you know, on the occasion that they are called upon,
- 27:12Speaker 1: their training and skills are invaluable when it comes to
- 27:15Speaker 1: helping out people like Janis And the question I asked
- 27:18Speaker 1: myself who has fallen over the most, Janie or a
- 27:22Speaker 1: three legged spaniel. Now, now, Janee, we did ask you
- 27:26Speaker 1: if you wanted to play a record, a record played,
- 27:29Speaker 1: and you come up with this one. So Janie, this
- 27:32Speaker 1: is for you. Blondie there and Sunday girl and ask
- 27:49Speaker 1: for it Janie one. Okay, Now, I've got loads to
- 27:54Speaker 1: get through. To be honest, I don't think I'm going
- 27:56Speaker 1: to get for it all. So let's crack on. We've
- 27:58Speaker 1: got some cricket news, folks. In first eleven traveled to Sidcup,
- 28:02Speaker 1: who won the toss and decided to bat, making two
- 28:04Speaker 1: hundred and forty for seven in their fifty overs. Folkston
- 28:08Speaker 1: then took to the crease but were bowled all out
- 28:10Speaker 1: for one hundred and ninety one and thirty five overs.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So sidcuple were victorious by forty nine runs. Now this
- 28:17Speaker 1: just shows just how competitive this league is because Sidcup
- 28:19Speaker 1: were eighth out of ten teams. And this Saturday could
- 28:22Speaker 1: be another banana skin as they faced bottom club Old
- 28:26Speaker 1: Wilsonians at the Three Hills. Game starts at twelve o'clock.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And by the way that this defeat keeps Folkstone in
- 28:32Speaker 1: second place, we have a game in hand over leaders
- 28:35Speaker 1: Bromley Common, but breathing down their necks in third place
- 28:38Speaker 1: are Kingshill who have played two games less than Folkston,
- 28:41Speaker 1: so this is going to be a really exciting running
- 28:44Speaker 1: to the end of the season. In a close game
- 28:46Speaker 1: of why Hawkins batted first and made two hundred and
- 28:48Speaker 1: two for eight in their forty overs, why have were
- 28:51Speaker 1: closing in fast top scorer Dan Noden in good four
- 28:54Speaker 1: making seventy one not out but they couldn't quite get there,
- 28:57Speaker 1: making one hundred and ninety one for six in their
- 28:59Speaker 1: forty eight overs. So Hawkings won the game by just
- 29:02Speaker 1: eleven runs. Despite the win, they slipped down to fifth place.
- 29:06Speaker 1: This week is a tough one away to Sheppey who
- 29:09Speaker 1: are top high cricket club. Batted first at home against Edgerton,
- 29:13Speaker 1: captain Matt Ford once again leading away scoring one hundred
- 29:16Speaker 1: and eleven. Their total was two hundred and one for seven,
- 29:20Speaker 1: but a steady all round batting performance by Edgerton and
- 29:23Speaker 1: twenty eight extras from high the bowlers aided Edgerton to
- 29:26Speaker 1: make two hundred and two for five, winning the game
- 29:29Speaker 1: by five wickets. Canterbury, who are still second this week
- 29:34Speaker 1: Sorry Hive are still second this week, are away to
- 29:38Speaker 1: Kennington Hive Green We're at home in a local derby
- 29:41Speaker 1: against Saltwood, who won the toss and elected to bat,
- 29:44Speaker 1: making two hundred and eight for nine in their forty overs.
- 29:47Speaker 1: High scorer was Arthur Lever who made seventy seven. The
- 29:51Speaker 1: Green managed one hundred and sixty five for nine in
- 29:53Speaker 1: their forty overs but lost the game by forty three runs.
- 29:57Speaker 1: This Saturday, the Green are at home to top club
- 29:59Speaker 1: Willsboro and Saltwood are away to second from bottom Tenadon.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Sipton Park traveled to Rochester to play Borstal Cricket Club,
- 30:07Speaker 1: who batted first, making two hundred and sixteen all out.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Siptm Park then replied with two hundred and twenty for eight,
- 30:13Speaker 1: winning the game by two wickets. This week, the Sibs
- 30:17Speaker 1: are at home to fourth place up Church, whilst the
- 30:19Speaker 1: Sibs are just one place behind in fifth, so another
- 30:23Speaker 1: juicy game in prospect there Now, the weather forecast looks
- 30:26Speaker 1: were a little bit drizzly for Saturday, so we could
- 30:28Speaker 1: have some stoppages or reduced overs, but less hope not. Okay,
- 30:33Speaker 1: back to a bit of music. We've got Westlife and
- 30:35Speaker 1: fool Again. There was a Westlife there and fool again. Okay,
- 30:55Speaker 1: we are really running out of time now, so I
- 30:57Speaker 1: must just do this last little article now. Last Sunday,
- 31:01Speaker 1: I was driving by Radna Park and saw somebody putting
- 31:03Speaker 1: out a start finish sign, very similar to the ones
- 31:06Speaker 1: you see at a road race. So with my sports
- 31:09Speaker 1: ferit head on, I thought it's going to have a look.
- 31:11Speaker 1: I introduced myself to a gentleman who was just putting
- 31:14Speaker 1: on his blue high of his vest, and immediately things
- 31:16Speaker 1: fell into place. It was the very first Radna Park
- 31:20Speaker 1: Junior Park run, and the gentleman in question was mister
- 31:23Speaker 1: Roy Atkins, the run director. I admitted to know him
- 31:26Speaker 1: there was a Folkston Junior Park run in the making,
- 31:28Speaker 1: but didn't know it was.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Last Sunday. Roy told me it was what they call
- 31:32Speaker 2: a soft launch.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Two weeks ago they held a practice run so they
- 31:36Speaker 1: could see if there was any potential problems.
- 31:38Speaker 2: And just by word of mouth, around thirty children turned up.
- 31:42Speaker 2: Now on Sunday.
- 31:42Speaker 1: It was a glorious morning and things seemed to go
- 31:44Speaker 1: without a hitch. The course was checked, the marshals briefed,
- 31:48Speaker 1: the finish funnel set up. There was a quick warm up,
- 31:50Speaker 1: then forty three youngsters headed off for two laps as
- 31:53Speaker 1: two kilometers of the park and as this was the
- 31:56Speaker 1: first official meeting, all the runners got their times and
- 32:00Speaker 1: guess what.
- 32:00Speaker 2: They all got peebs.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Now it's run exactly as the Senior Park Run for example,
- 32:05Speaker 1: you need a bar code is free, you get a
- 32:08Speaker 1: time which is posted on the website and it's nine am,
- 32:11Speaker 1: but every Sunday, not Saturday. Parents and grandparents thoroughly enjoyed
- 32:15Speaker 1: the occasion watching the children run or walk around the park,
- 32:19Speaker 1: and numbers are expected to grow as his currently school
- 32:21Speaker 1: holiday time and many families are away. It was nice
- 32:25Speaker 1: to see many familiar faces volunteering. Chris Walgar, James Springett,
- 32:30Speaker 1: Kirsty Gardner, Jason Crockford and Park Run Ambassador Hannah Perrin
- 32:34Speaker 1: to name but a few. As if we all know
- 32:36Speaker 1: by now, park Run is a great concept to get
- 32:39Speaker 1: people out of the house staying fit and healthy and
- 32:41Speaker 1: meeting new friends, and Junior Park Run is just the same.
- 32:45Speaker 1: It gives the youngsters a chance to burn off some
- 32:47Speaker 1: energy on a Sunday morning. Volunteers will always be needed,
- 32:51Speaker 1: so if you want to volunteer or find out anything else,
- 32:54Speaker 1: please visit the Radnor Park Junior Park Run Facebook page
- 32:57Speaker 1: where there is a link to take you to a
- 32:59Speaker 1: very formative website. And by the way, it's open to
- 33:02Speaker 1: children from four to fourteen years old. Right now, I'd
- 33:08Speaker 1: just like to say that I have missed a few
- 33:12Speaker 1: things out but hopefully I'll be back on Saturday with Adrian.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Adrian Dawks is doing a special Saturday Sports roundup show
- 33:21Speaker 1: now and he's getting really good at it. And that's
- 33:24Speaker 1: on between ten and eleven am. And do you know what,
- 33:28Speaker 1: it's a chance for me to help Adrian out, And
- 33:32Speaker 1: certainly this week is I've got some hockey news, I've
- 33:35Speaker 1: got some triathlon news, but I'll be telling you about
- 33:39Speaker 1: that on Saturday. In the meantime, we got a classic
- 33:42Speaker 1: track and I do love this one of my favorite
- 33:44Speaker 1: all time songs. And I just want to say goodbye
- 33:46Speaker 1: to you this show. We'll be back in two weeks
- 33:48Speaker 1: time and you never know. We might have a special
- 33:51Speaker 1: guest if I can find one, and so just stay sporty, everybody,
- 33:55Speaker 1: whatever happens out there, just stay sporty.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Six six
