Latest / Systematic Geekology / Kingdom Hearts: 'My Friends are My Power' (cheesy, but true)
Transcript
- 1:15My friends are my power.
- 1:16If you find that catchphrase cringe, everyone does good job.
- 1:21But if you still secret, you're like, well, I mean, it's true.
- 1:24Maybe Kingdom Hearts is the game for you.
- 1:28We're back.
- 1:29Today we're talking about the original Kingdom Hearts.
- 1:32As Christian, Ashley and myself, Joshua Null, have been going through the Kingdom Hearts franchise, talking about the games chronologically in order, trying to get through.
- 1:42Through the sense of the story and lore and all of the nonsense.
- 1:47Getting ready to celebrate the 25th year anniversary.
- 1:50And then while we were doing this, found out that Kingdom Hearts 4 actually is going to happen next year.
- 1:54And every single time we talk about something before the episode comes out, something kind of makes our conversation null and void.
- 2:03So last time we did a bonus for y', all trying to guess what worlds.
- 2:06And since then there has been a leak that now we know what worlds are in the game.
- 2:11But of course, the leak happened before we actually released the episode.
- 2:14So if you heard the last episode, you're like, why are they guessing worlds?
- 2:17It was already leaked because it wasn't leaked till after we recorded.
- 2:20So today when we talk about something and you're like, why did they do that?
- 2:24It was already announced.
- 2:25It seems to be the curse of this recording schedule is we always record something right before they give us new news so that we miss talking about it.
- 2:34So you're welcome.
- 2:35Yeah, we suffer through that for your sake.
- 2:39It's.
- 2:39It's crazy because we went like nine years of no news at all, and then we're like, okay, we'll start talking about the games.
- 2:45And now there's news every single time we tried to talk about it.
- 2:52But, you know, that's a.
- 2:53That's a good complaint to have.
- 2:54That is a good problem.
- 2:55I'll take it any day of the week.
- 2:57I am Joshua Noel, your local Kingdom Hearts.
- 3:01I don't know, fanatic, crazy person.
- 3:04Yeah, nerd geek.
- 3:07I love these games.
- 3:08I've always loved these games.
- 3:09I can't wait to talk about the very first one.
- 3:12They really got me into all of it for now, though, talking about what I've been geeking out on.
- 3:17The Tomb Raider survival trilogy was put on sale on Steam.
- 3:21I got like, all three of those, like, 2014-2018 Tomb Raider games for like $10 or something.
- 3:28They're really good.
- 3:28They're really good.
- 3:29That's what I've been geeking out on.
- 3:30I'm already on the third of the three game, but I don't think I finished either of the other two.
- 3:36I'VE been kind of like playing bits and pieces from each because I just like doing the tombs.
- 3:39And then when I get to a part that I'm like, I don't want a sand tomb.
- 3:43Just pick up the next game, I find a tomb I like.
- 3:46I'm here for the adventure, not the story.
- 3:50Christian, what do you Eventually I'll finish them all, just not in chronological order.
- 3:56I'm playing right now, Rise of the Ronin, which takes place at the start of and at the aftermath of America opening up Japan to the rest of the world when Admiral Perry comes in.
- 4:08And of course, being a Japanese game, you get to fight Admiral Perry and make him your friend.
- 4:12So this is excellent.
- 4:14I'm having a lot of fun so far.
- 4:15Nice, Nice.
- 4:16That's as quick as these are supposed to be.
- 4:18If I was better at this, I'd sound more like Christian Ashley.
- 4:22No one has ever accused me of brevity when it comes to stuff like.
- 4:25This, except for just now.
- 4:27And if you guys want to also accuse Christian of brevity, you can rate and review our show wherever you are listening to your podcast.
- 4:35Leave us a rating.

- 4:43Please and thank you.
- 4:44We also like to thank our financial supporter.
- 4:46Today we're doing a special shout out for the one and only Trip Fuller, who I may see before this gets released.
- 4:52I'm not sure on release dates, but Theology Beer Camp's coming up soon and I'll be seeing him at Kansas City, Missouri and it's gonna be a lot of fun.
- 4:59If you guys want your own shout out, you too can support our show by becoming an official member of Systematic Ecology.

- 5:21But there's other stuff there, so check it out.
- 5:23I think it's totally worth it.
- 5:24If you want to hear other Kingdom Hearts episodes, there's another link down below in the show's description for or other Kingdom Hearts related content that we've done lots of ways.
- 5:32Lots of different links and ways to follow us and be part of all the geeky goodness.
- 5:35So do us a favor, check it all out and let's get into some crazy Disney video game nonsense, Christian.
- 5:44Let's do it.
- 5:45All right.
- 5:46So first up, as weirdly has become the case, we have to talk about news, because apparently there's just going to constantly be Kingdom Hearts release stuff.
- 5:55I'm not going to touch the Fortnite stuff.
- 5:58Yes, I think the designs could be better.
- 5:59No, I did not expect them to be different.
- 6:02Like, I expected it to look pretty much how it looks.
- 6:05They are making it for Fortnite.
- 6:07They are not making a Kingdom Hearts game that happens to be Fortnite.
- 6:10They're making Fortnite with Kingdom Hearts skins.
- 6:13So it's going to look like Fortnite looks.
- 6:16I just can't wait for the hidden lore that if you don't play Fortnite, you'll never understand.
- 6:21It turns out that everyone who's ever played Fortnite is Xehanort.
- 6:27At this point.
- 6:27I wouldn't be surprised.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:29Anyway, there have been leaks.
- 6:32We're not going to discuss what the leaks were, but we want to talk about how it was leaked, what it means for the game, what it means for us, and just how people participate in geeking out.
- 6:41Because some people are like, well, the developers didn't want this out, so we shouldn't talk about it.
- 6:46And some people are like, I want to know right now.
- 6:49I'm one of those.
- 6:51There's a range of reactions and how people think you should.
- 6:54You know, people, like, try to make up rules on how you should geek out.
- 6:57For some reason, I'm like, listen, I get they didn't want it out there, but it's out there.
- 7:02It's not going to affect how I enjoy the game personally.
- 7:06I know TJ said before he likes to go into stuff without any expectations at all.
- 7:10So he doesn't even watch commercials.
- 7:11So, yeah, like, I think there's a range of how you can participate, but.
- 7:15Well, yeah.
- 7:16So before we touch on what actually happened, Christian, do you have any thoughts on, like, should you look at leaks?
- 7:20Does it matter how you, like, prep for a game?
- 7:23Should people just go in cold and experience as is?
- 7:26Does it matter?
- 7:27Depends on who you are.
- 7:28Me, I'm the same way.
- 7:29It's like leaks and rumors and the like.
- 7:31All they do is hype me up for something.
- 7:33Now I'm already going to engage with outside of certain matters that have already been mentioned for certain film franchises because, oh, this thing's going to happen.
- 7:42I'm going to be in this world, the Kingdom Hearts, where I'm going to experience this character, this is going to happen in the movie I'm about to watch.
- 7:47Oh man, I can't wait to actually see that.
- 7:49Because it doesn't like, it doesn't take away from the surprise of it all.
- 7:52Because I was like, well, how are they going to do it?
- 7:54Because like in the prequel trilogy, I knew Anakin was going to become Darth Vader.
- 7:59Like that's like day one I knew that it's a leak, as it were, given what it is.
- 8:03But how is it going to happen?
- 8:05Hype me up for watching the rest of it for this.
- 8:09This is hyped me up even more because oh, what will happen in that world?
- 8:12What will happen in this world?
- 8:13I don't know.
- 8:14And even if everything is spoiled for me eventually and everyone writes it down, I'm still going to be like, well, I haven't experienced it myself, so.
- 8:20Yeah.
- 8:21But I also understand people who want to know nothing.
- 8:23I mean it's a very foreign concept to me, don't get me wrong.
- 8:28But I get it.
- 8:29Yeah, I get it.
- 8:30Yeah.
- 8:30Like there are some things I like doing that for.
- 8:33For me personally, I don't want story leaks.
- 8:36I want to experience the story for the first time when I'm playing the game.
- 8:41What worlds are going to be, what characters might show up.
- 8:43Now I want to know all that that, that hypes me up.
- 8:45It gets me excited.
- 8:48So what these leaks were, it was a list of the trophies got leaked on Steam.
- 8:53So anybody could just go to Kingdom Hearts 4, see what the trophies are.
- 8:57And in the description of some of the trophies it said do all of this on Blank World.
- 9:01So people were able to look through it and go, oh, so these are the worlds that exist.
- 9:05Yes.
- 9:06And it wasn't on the Kingdom Hearts Persona got hit by this too.
- 9:09Plenty of other games, games that haven't been announced yet would hate their right now.
- 9:16Steve is.
- 9:17Yeah, it would not be a good day to be the ones responsible for this.
- 9:20Especially because, you know, Disney had a whole advertising plan for this.
- 9:24Oh absolutely.
- 9:25That just got trashed.
- 9:29But like, I don't know, man, I will say too.
- 9:32So, so here, here are my thoughts without spoiling anything because we're going to do spoiler free here.
- 10:37If you want to hear our thoughts on what was leaked, we will talk about it in the bonus spoil free thoughts 1.
- 10:45I not completely convinced.
- 10:47Like I feel like this is probably all legit.
- 10:50This is it.
- 10:50But I wouldn't be completely surprised.
- 10:53That's how I'll say it.
- 10:54If that's not all of the trophies that was only most of the trophies.
- 10:57It turns out some got left out.
- 10:58And maybe we don't know everything yet.
- 11:00So I'm not holding out that this is absolutely everything.
- 11:04But if it is, I'm content.
- 11:05I'm happy with what I saw.
- 11:07To me, my spoiler free insight.
- 11:10I think it looks like they're trying to pick worlds more based on the story than, oh, this is new and what kids like.
- 11:18Which gives me a lot more hope than what I had for Kingdom Hearts 3.
- 11:22I would second that in the fact that worlds I expected to be there aren't there.
- 11:26And you know what?
- 11:27I want them to be there at some point in time, but the fact that they showed restraint means something to me.
- 11:32Yeah, yeah, same here.
- 11:34I also think this is probably a spoiler free okay to say it definitely, definitely appears that it's not just like at the beginning, oh, no, Sora was dead and we're gonna move on.
- 11:46I think death is gonna be a big theme throughout the game.
- 11:49Looking at some of the worlds and stuff that are listed, I wouldn't be surprised.
- 11:52That could be pretty interesting.
- 11:53I'm actually kind of excited for a game that wrestles a lot with identity.
- 11:56Kind of excited to see what they do with that.
- 11:57Yeah.
- 11:58Or worried a little bit of both.
- 12:00You never know more, but it's fine.
- 12:05Any other thoughts on the leaks and stuff or you want to jump into our Kingdom Hearts talk?
- 12:09I'm good to go.
- 12:11Cool.
- 12:12Well, in that case.
- 12:13Last time we talked about Christian's favorite Kingdom Hearts game, Birth by Sleep.
- 12:16This time we're talking about my favorite Kingdom Hearts game, Kingdom Hearts, the original.
- 12:23I have played it every year since it came out.
- 12:25Most of my managers where I work, I have played this game longer than they've been alive.
- 12:31I beat it every year for many years before they were born.
- 12:35So, like, very personal to me.
- 12:38All the nostalgia is there.
- 12:41It's the only game that really holds on to, for me, like, that platformer era, which I love the platform games.
- 12:48Christian does not.
- 12:49It's very simple.
- 12:50The combat's very clunky, but these are like all reasons I love it, actually.
- 12:55It's like, yeah, he's like a 10 year old kid.
- 12:57If the combat wasn't kind of whack, like, if he just came out knowing what he was doing, I'd be kind of concerned.
- 13:03Like, it wouldn't make sense.
- 13:06It was my first rpg, so someone who grew up with platformers.
- 13:10Once I like, I was like, man, I couldn't figure out certain things and I moved on to Other worlds.
- 13:14And then it's like, oh, now you have high jump.
- 13:16And I'm like, wait a minute, that chest.
- 13:17I couldn't get a wonderland.
- 13:19I bet I could get it now.
- 13:20I'm like, to me, that was awesome.
- 13:21Like, it was just the coolest experience all around.
- 13:25And it still is.
- 13:26Like, it's still just.
- 13:26There's all the nostalgia, the gameplay I love.
- 13:29The platformer stuff I love.
- 13:32And even the story.
- 13:33It's the simplest story of all the Kingdom Hearts games, in my opinion, and just kind of gets at that high.
- 13:38Like, hey, we can give ourselves to darkness.
- 13:40We can try to isolate ourselves.
- 13:43Or we can embrace friendship.
- 13:45We can embrace the light, stand together.
- 13:48And our strength isn't in some magical weapon or something, but it's actually our friendship.
- 13:51And yes, that's cheesy, but I actually still love that and it means a lot to me.
- 13:56So I keep playing it every year and remind myself that, hey, this is something that matters to me.
- 14:01Christian, thoughts on the first game before we get into the story and stuff?
- 14:04Just like opening thoughts.
- 14:06Yeah, it's clunky.
- 14:07It's of its time and part of that is part of its charm.
- 14:10It's not exactly my favorite by any stretch of the imagination.
- 14:14I still think this.
- 14:15As mentioned in other episodes, we've done like the villain alliance here.
- 14:19One of my favorite things they've ever done.
- 14:23The boss fights are really great for the most part.
- 14:26Still never going to be a fan of the platforming in any game series whatsoever.
- 14:30It's not for me.
- 14:31I'm old and slow and I've been that way since I've been a kid.
- 14:34So that has never appealed to me.
- 14:36But what does is seeing like Disney characters I knew interacting with.
- 14:41Because I didn't really play the Final Fantasy games at this point in time, but like getting to know them and then eventually playing those games later on and going, okay, that's how you would react and stuff like that.
- 14:49That's really fun.
- 14:50Really cool.
- 14:51And of course the anime bs that happens as a result of this.
- 14:55I'm a total sucker for it.
- 14:56That's why I'm still here.
- 14:58Yeah.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 14:59I didn't grow up with anime.
- 15:01I didn't grow up with Final Fantasy.
- 15:03I grew up in Florida.
- 15:04So like Disney was all about.
- 15:06I talked about some of this before I got stuck on Destiny island for like a year.
- 15:09My uncle came and got me past that.
- 15:11And then ever since then I've been going because I.
- 15:13And I never played an rpg.
- 15:15So my first go through I made it all the way to the final boss with just the original Kingdom Key.
- 15:19Keyblade.
- 15:20And then someone told me what an RPG was.
- 15:22I was like, oh, Drop Select Oblivion Keyblade.
- 15:25Wow.
- 15:26That boss died in, like, three hits.
- 15:27That was crazy.
- 15:29It was just so cool to be like.
- 15:31Then I had to play it again because I'm like, I didn't know I could be doing this.
- 15:34And it made the whole game new and, like, I don't know, it sparked something in me that never goes away.
- 15:42Yeah.
- 15:43Like, it's just.
- 15:43I don't know.
- 15:44It's cool.
- 15:44I also remember, and I've talked about this before, we saw the Stitch commercials when legal, and Stitch was about to come out was around the same time, and Stitch was going around to other worlds, like flying through Aladdin,
- 15:55Jasmine, and whatever.
- 15:56And then when I watched the Stitch movie, it was just Stitch, and I was like, huh?
- 16:00I guess.
- 16:00I guess that was something else.
- 16:02And when I saw Kingdom Hearts, like, I gaslit myself into thinking, oh, those commercials must have been for this, because this is where you're going to all the different Disney worlds.
- 16:10Yeah.
- 16:11So I have a lot of history with it.
- 16:13As far as the story goes, it's pretty basic.
- 16:17There are three kids.
- 16:18Well, there are several kids, but three main protagonists.
- 16:20You have Sora, Riku, Kairi.
- 16:22They're all like little kids, so, you know, they have crushes or whatever.
- 16:26Sora wants to impress Kairi, but Riku's the cool kid.
- 16:29So Riku and Sora are like, best friends, but they're also like a little antagonist.
- 16:32And that kind of develops throughout the series.
- 16:35Worlds start blinking out.
- 16:37They're being lost to darkness.
- 16:39King Mickey goes to figure out what's going on.
- 16:41Donald and Goofy go to try to find the king with a note that just says, find the Key.
- 16:46So when Destiny island starts to go dark, Sora, Riku, and Kairi are already trying to find out how to go to another planet.
- 16:52Because they're kids and they're just like, oh, wouldn't it be cool if we got on a raft and went away?
- 16:56It's somehow because.
- 16:57Nonsense.
- 16:57Their world, when it goes to darkness, they all end up in different places.
- 17:01Sora ends up with the Keyblade because the Key chose him.
- 17:04Because at least at this point in the story, that's how it worked.
- 17:06How it works now.
- 17:07Don't ask me.
- 17:08Not really sure yet.
- 17:10Kind of because there was also several hearts living inside of Sora because everyone secretly saw it, and one of them had a keyblade, or several of them had a keyblade.
- 17:16So Sora had a keyblade.
- 17:17Don't worry about it.
- 17:18Supposed to be Riku, but it also wasn't supposed to be Riku.
- 17:21Exactly.
- 17:21Yeah, but anyway, Sora ends up with a key.
- 17:24He doesn't know how he got it.
- 17:25It just chose him as his planet was going dark.
- 17:28Allegedly chose him.
- 17:31Pluto, good old Pluto, wakes him up while he's on another world.
- 17:34He ends up running into Donald and Goofy.
- 17:36They go through all these different Disney worlds trying to find the king and Sora's friends, Riku and Kairi.
- 17:42I'm going to simplify a lot of this.
- 17:44Riku ends up being lured by Maleficent and them into the darkness, thinking that this power is utilitarianism.
- 17:51He's like, if I embrace this power, I can save Kairi.
- 17:54And Sora's like, well, I just want us all to be together again.
- 17:56Why can't we just be chill and maybe not go to darkness?
- 18:01Enrique's like, no, darkness is the only way.
- 18:04Abducts Pinocchio and all kinds of craziness.
- 18:07Anyway, in the end, Sora and Riku kind of have a clash.
- 18:10Sora realizes his strength wasn't in the keyblade or anything else, but it's in friendship.
- 18:15And all these friends he made around along the way.
- 18:18When he went to go see Aladdin or Hercules and all these other worlds he went to looking for his friends, he made new friends.
- 18:23And that's why he ends up being stronger than Riku in the end, kind of able to defeat darkness, which, it turns out, is actually someone named Ansem, which we get basically no information from here other than we needed
- 18:34a mysterious bad guy who was behind Maleficent and Riku, so that when you beat Maleficent, it wasn't the end of the game.
- 18:40They had their own bad guy.
- 18:42And also they didn't want to join Riku.
- 18:43Yeah, it's fine.
- 18:47Good.
- 18:47At the end, Ansem's whole goal was to try to unlock Kingdom Hearts, and he's, like, convinced that darkness will be at the in.
- 18:56In the middle of it, and that'll have all the power.
- 18:57And Sora's like, no, it'll be light.
- 18:59When the game does end, Kingdom Hearts door opens, you've defeated Ansem, and you're like, oh, there is light.
- 19:05But it turns out, actually, it's a lot of darkness.
- 19:06And King Mickey was just in the middle of it, holding up a keyblade that shone light.
- 19:10Depending on what ending you get, you then see everybody separated, and Sora, Donald, and Goofy run into castle oblivion.
- 19:16To be continued.
- 19:18What important pieces did I miss?
- 19:20Other stuff you want to touch on, Christian.
- 19:22Just the various Disney worlds you go to and learning along the way that there is also, outside of Ansem, this council of villains who are actively trying to seek out the Keyblade for their own ends, using the Heartless
- 19:33for their own ends, led by Maleficent, that you eventually defeat most of them along the way or do enough to stop their plans.
- 19:42Not really understanding what's going on because, hey, you're in a Kingdom Hearts game and that's fine.
- 19:46Yeah.
- 19:46And there was, and I think see a lot of the stuff here.
- 19:48Like In Kingdom Hearts 1, I feel like a lot of the stuff was either to look cool or so that they can include certain stuff from Disney.
- 19:54And I don't think they put a lot of thought into it.
- 19:56And then later they had to try to explain it away.
- 19:58So we get a lot of weird retcons.
- 20:00Yes.
- 20:00But one of those was Maleficent.
- 20:02And then were looking for the seven Princesses of Heart, because when you collect all of them, the door to Kingdom Hearts will open, which, you know, is the excuse why you meet Alice, Jasmine, Cinderella, and them get to
- 20:13be in the end, even though they don't have their own world.
- 20:15Because originally, Kingdom Hearts did a much better job at including Disney characters, even if you don't go to their world.
- 20:19And I miss that, just throwing that out there, But.
- 20:23So the seven Princess of Heart were what was needed.
- 20:26It turns out when the world went to darkness, Kyrie's heart escaped into you.
- 20:30So Sora had Kyrie's heart in him all along.
- 20:34And one of the strongest moments in all the games, in my personal opinion.
- 20:37Sora realizes this, and in order to save Kyrie, takes the Keyblade to himself to free Kyrie's heart.
- 20:43And that's when he thinks he's sacrificing himself.
- 20:46He becomes a Heartless.
- 20:46He ends up restored.
- 20:47But there's this huge moment where it's like, oh, she's in me.
- 20:51And he's willing to make that sacrifice.
- 20:54And then moments later, Kairi sees a Heartless.
- 20:57You know, the things we've been killing the whole time.
- 20:58And she's like, I think that's Sora.
- 21:00Because if you recalled from game lore, that was actually established in game this time, all of the Heartless are.
- 21:06Are Hearts that were lost to darkness.
- 21:09So if you really think about it, it does make it kind of weird that we're just going around slaughtering them and you're like, wait a minute.
- 21:13Some of these were just people who lost their way, like Riku or even kind of Sora.
- 21:19But I don't think what Sora did was darkness.
- 21:21But not really nonsense, you know, Just let it be.
- 21:25If you let them be, then they'll do terrible things.
- 21:27So the best thing to do is to get rid of them.
- 21:29Yeah, but it still was like a.
- 21:31Even though it's the best thing to do, I still feel like it adds weight if you think about it.
- 21:37Yeah.
- 21:37More so than most games where you just kill the bad guys because they're bad.
- 21:40And they even do play on that in other games where you find out that the organization or different people that we haven't got to yet are trying to make you defeat heartless because it's empowering them.
- 21:50And you're like, well, wait a minute.
- 21:51It's their goals.
- 21:52Yeah.
- 21:53And Kingdom Hearts constantly does this where like, yeah, you're supposed to beat the bad guys, but also there's consequences to just killing even these monster things.
- 22:00And I kind of like that they always add, yeah, there are still consequences, even though that is the only thing you could possibly do in the scenario.
- 22:07Yes, consequences are a good thing.
- 22:09More storytellers should know that.
- 22:11Yeah, I don't feel like I missed too much else.
- 22:14Like I said, this one is more simple than the other ones.
- 22:16You don't get a ton of lore.
- 22:17It's just very simple.
- 22:19Worlds are being lost to darkness.
- 22:21You find your strength in friendship, you overcome the darkness.
- 22:24And gummy ships run on smiles, apparently.
- 22:26Sure.
- 22:26I also still feel like the gummy ship.
- 22:29Like, mind you, I just want to though Kingdom Hearts.
- 22:32You can't just have categories with Kingdom Hearts.
- 22:35Like, the developers clearly just decided categories don't exist.
- 22:38Is this a kid's game?
- 22:39I mean, yeah, you go to Winnie the Pooh in them and there's not like curse words or blood.
- 22:43But also, you do have to ponder, what does it mean to die?
- 22:48And like, what is darkness itself?
- 22:51And there are some really scary monsters throughout this game.
- 22:54At one point in one of the games, Mickey's getting choked out and you think Goofy died.
- 22:59So it's like, I.
- 23:01I just don't think they're concerned of if it's a kids game or not or if it's a Disney game or Final Fantasy.
- 23:06What?
- 23:06What?
- 23:06Like, I just think that Nomura is like, it's Kingdom Hearts.
- 23:09That it is what it is, guys.
- 23:11Well, to be fair, how are Disney.
- 23:14Has Disney traumatized someone?
- 23:15Something they saw in one of the movies?
- 23:18I think we're in good company here.
- 23:20Yeah, yeah, it's fine.
- 23:22But the gummy ship still always felt a little out of place.
- 23:26I've come to embrace it over the years.
- 23:27But like, the more I think about, I'm like, man, we have Disney, we have Darkness, we have all these village.
- 23:32It's like, hey, to get to world to world though, here's a little ship made out of gummy pieces because we said so.
- 23:38And it's space fight now.
- 23:42Okay, sure, I barely ever upgrade them.
- 23:46If you can give me more guns, cool, I'll do that.
- 23:49But like, I'm not designing a new ship.
- 23:51The only way I did that was for achievements and two, so I can make the donut ship that like, it's really hard to kill.
- 23:58The only time I make my own ship is in the first game.
- 24:03And it's because it's just the easiest to build a ship in.
- 24:06And I can just add a bunch of guns and have like two blocks and just hold the fire button so I can get to where I want to go.
- 24:14But yeah, man, Hercules, Alice in Wonderland, Halloween Town, Peter Pan.
- 24:19It wasn't even like just the 90s Disney.
- 24:21It was like the old Disney, New Disney in between Disney.
- 24:24Like when I picked this up, I don't know, man, like it's still to this day, like it's just, it's such a good nostalgia bit.
- 24:31But if we're going to talk about themes, I feel like we got to get to this.
- 24:34My friends are my power so there is a moment where, you know, Riku's trying to use power of darkness, take the keyblade so that he can save Kairi.
- 24:43Utilitarian bad.
- 24:45Josh complains about it and when he does so we're ends up with this little wooden sword.
- 24:50So you have a 10 year old with a wooden sword going around Hollow Bastion with the beast from Beauty and the Beast trying to defeat shadow monsters made out of the darkness in people's hearts.
- 25:00And you show up to Riku, who's imbued with darkness and has all these weapons and a keyblade and all this stuff.
- 25:06Donald, Goofy, like, well, we're supposed to follow the key.
- 25:08So I guess we're with him now.
- 25:09And Sora is like, I guess I'm alone, but I'm not alone.
- 25:13Friends are my power and they're in my heart.
- 25:15And you're like, wow, that was cheesy.
- 25:17But that was the moment when he realized friendship was his strength.
- 25:20That the keyblade returned to him.
- 25:21Donald and Goofy are like, even before he had The Keyblade, when it was still the one sword.
- 25:26They were like.
- 25:26They're like, the king's not here to tell us what to do.
- 25:28But we're pretty sure he wouldn't want us with the guy that's imbued with darkness.
- 25:31So we're going to go back to our friend.
- 25:33And then that wooden sword becomes the Keyblade again.
- 25:36And like, to me, that's the crux of the message.
- 25:38I think that was the message of Kingdom Hearts in a nutshell.
- 25:41Was in that one moment, friendship is your power.
- 25:44Cheesy as hell, Christian.
- 25:45You want to comment on that incredibly cheesy sentiment?
- 25:49That's why Sora, Donald and Goofy become the true Utilitarians.
- 25:52Because they do what's right for the most people.
- 25:54By joining forces with Sora and getting things done with him rather than Riku.
- 25:57Because it's better for everyone if Sora is the Keyblade master in this instance.
- 26:02Because they have, through their.
- 26:03I'm being half facetious here.
- 26:05Like through their journey together, they've realized who he is, who they are as people.
- 26:09Their mission is this.
- 26:11What is the better part of the mission?
- 26:12Is it to go with the letter of the law or the idea of actually following the true instinct of the law, which is to preserve as much life as possible?
- 26:22Which is what Mickey really wants them to do.
- 26:24By looking for the Key.
- 26:26Rather than being zealots for the cause, they become zealots for the righteous cause.
- 26:32Actually understanding what it means to get the job done.
- 26:35And that's part of it.
- 26:36Is along the way, the people who help push you forward throughout all this have made you into who you are right now.
- 26:42So Sora can make the sacrifice play that he does to bring Kyrie back.
- 26:46Because it is better for Kyrie to be there for him to be there at that moment.
- 26:49Now.
- 26:50Thank God for Anime BS and you know, Nomura being no more of because he's able to come back through that same instinct of like, Kyrie wouldn't have been there without him.
- 26:58So let me help you in the way that I can.
- 27:00Given that I am the special being in this universe.
- 27:04This being without darkness in my heart.
- 27:06And the reason Sora ends as only a shadow is because he has that little darkness in his heart.
- 27:11Yeah.
- 27:12I mean, there's so much to go back.
- 27:14So one still not utilitarian.
- 27:16Because I, I.
- 27:16I'm convinced.
- 27:17I don't know.
- 27:17Goofy went by his side thinking that they were gonna lose.
- 27:19And they said, listen, we're gonna do the right thing regardless of what we were told, consequences be damned.
- 27:26Because that's what friendship does.
- 27:27They stand by your side, even if it's like, hey, we're gonna lose, but we're gonna lose together, dude.
- 27:33And I don't know.
- 27:34I love the moment.
- 27:35And there's something too, about that, where Sora is heartless and Kyrie notices him.
- 27:40And I don't think I'm reading in too much to say.
- 27:43I.
- 27:43What at that moment was trying to convey is a real friend sees you even when you have lost your way to darkness, even when you have become unrecognizable to anyone else.
- 27:54A true friend still sees you in that.
- 27:57And I just.
- 27:58It's such a beautiful moment, like, all of these, because Sora also never gives up on Riku.
- 28:02He is imbued with darkness.
- 28:04I should have included a picture of Riku in this.
- 28:06He's completely gone to darkness.
- 28:09Looks so.
- 28:10Like, so evil.
- 28:11Like, so his weapon is the Soul Eater.
- 28:15And so I was like, nah, he's still good.
- 28:18As much as people make fun of Terror and Riku is the one who.
- 28:22It's way more obvious from, like, the start, you're not.
- 28:26You're not on the side of the angels here, buddy.
- 28:29Yeah.
- 28:31Yeah.
- 30:00But, like.
- 30:01And it's just so great that they never give up on each other.
- 30:03They always see each other.
- 30:04Even in the darkest place, they're always there for each other.
- 30:06Like, that feels.
- 30:07Friendship is just so awesome.
- 30:10Yeah.
- 30:11Yeah.
- 30:11I just.
- 30:11I love this series so much, and I think it goes into our annual theme this year of the faces behind us, because there's this moment, and I don't remember if you see flashes or hear voices or anything, but,
- 30:23like, it's meant to convey that when he says, my friends are my power, he's thinking of Donald and Goofy.
- 30:28He's thinking of Beast.
- 30:29He's thinking about how he met Tarzan, Aladdin, Jasmine, all these friends he made along the way.
- 30:35And even though they weren't physically there with him, he was like, I know that they're with me in heart, whatever that means.
- 30:42And that's what gave him strength.
- 30:43And I think so much of.
- 30:45Like, when we talk about the face of the hindsight, usually we're talking very literal, like, who taught Christian, who was his teacher, who was his professor, whatever.
- 30:52But sometimes it's like, hey, man, I'm out at Chipotle having a hard time, but my friends, like, I like, okay.
- 30:58I'm pretty sure, even if not at this exact moment, I know that Christian prays for me.
- 31:02I know that Will cares about me.
- 31:04And even though right now I want to just cuss out all the customers and storm out, sometimes I could just think, like, wait a minute, I have people in my corner.
- 31:11This is a hard day.
- 31:12But I'm not alone in this.
- 31:14And that makes all the difference in the world.
- 31:15And yeah, it's such a cheesy line, but it's true as why I keep coming back to this game.
- 31:20And I think as far as Faces behind us, I think that's just fits.
- 31:24Yeah, I get it.
- 31:25Like, completely understand.
- 31:27Like, it is so very difficult right now.
- 31:29As I was sharing before recording, like, I still don't have a job in the field.
- 31:32The second time I went to school, greater education.
- 31:37And it's so frustrating as someone who wants to do that thing so very desperately, who has learned the lesson that this is what you're here on this earth to do.
- 31:43And yet it's not there.
- 31:44And yet at that same time, I know I have people backing me up.
- 31:47Like, Will has tried to get me jobs.
- 31:49Family members have tried.
- 31:50It just hasn't worked out because that wasn't God's plan.
- 31:52And at the same time, I'm not angry at God either because I know he's got my back.
- 31:57I know he wouldn't put me through this just for sake of me suffering.
- 32:01As I know he's got something for me.
- 32:03I can't see it because I'm limited to where I am.
- 32:05But what he is doing is he's putting people around me, people I've become friends with now and that I wouldn't have been friends with if I had gotten the job that I wanted.
- 32:13People around me who already knew me and, like, are praying for me and reaching out for me, and yet they're the ones helping to lift me up as I'm doing part of the work myself to make sure that
- 32:22I don't lose sight of the goal.
- 32:23The goal is to still do what I'm supposed to do to further the kingdom.
- 32:26And without them, I couldn't do that.
- 32:27And sorry for the pun with Kingdom.
- 32:29No, I.
- 32:30I liked it.
- 32:30I was hoping it was on purpose just for.
- 32:35Just for our videos watchers, the YouTube people.
- 32:38Now I'm wondering if this little glass figure shadow I have, what if this is Sora?
- 32:44What if it's supposed to be Sora?
- 32:46In my head it is.
- 32:47Now that's Headcanon.
- 32:50But so, yeah, friendship.
- 32:51We mentioned that as one of the themes.
- 32:52One of the other themes all of the games touch on is like, identity, annoyingly.
- 32:57And you would think that it would get repetitive and I would get bored of it, but I don't.
- 32:59I think every Kingdom Hearts game, if you're just to boil it down to only the themes, it's.
- 33:05The theme is going to be, are you still you without blank?
- 33:09And the answer is always the same.
- 33:11You are defined by your friends, your relationships, what you're, who you're entangled with, so that will can get roughed back in.
- 33:18So this game, it's your heart.
- 33:21Are you still you without your heart?
- 33:23And mostly it seems like they mean soul by that, but it seems like Nomura also wants to talk something else about soul in another game.
- 33:29So I'm going to use the language they use in the game for this and say heart, even though I think that's confusing unnecessarily so.
- 33:36But, you know, they show where Kyrie doesn't have a heart.
- 33:39Her body's still there.
- 33:40And it's like, that's still Kyrie, though, right?
- 33:42Or is it?
- 33:43And then it's Pinocchio is just a puppet.
- 33:47Or is he?
- 33:47No, he has a heart.
- 33:48He can't just be a puppet.
- 33:49And they asked the game, are you still you without your heart?
- 33:52So convoluted language.
- 33:53We're just gonna accept the language of heart, and hopefully you guys are with us and we're just accepting, like, Disney has its own thing.
- 34:01And we're gonna use the word heart to talk about what we're talking about.
- 34:05Christian, how do you answer this question?
- 34:07Are you still you without your heart?
- 34:09Am I still me without my heart?
- 34:11But in the sense of, yes, this body would still be me, but if my soul were to depart from there and I.
- 34:18And the fact that I was dead, then no, like, it's.
- 34:21It's just a vessel, an empty that's moved around.
- 34:24Like, unless there's some way to restore my soul to my body, it's the former part of me.
- 34:29Now, if we're dealing with the.
- 34:30The anime BS of this game, then absolutely, yes, then that's.
- 34:34That's still me.
- 34:34Because there's still a possibility that I could come back or someone could restore my heart back to my body or my memories.
- 34:40Memories is more what he's going for with heart ultimately, rather than soul, which is another thing that comes up later on, but it's its own thing.
- 34:48But if we're talking game, yes.
- 34:51If we're talking real life.
- 34:53No.
- 34:53But at that same time, there is still something about that.
- 34:56If I were to die right here and now, my funeral is held.
- 34:59Well, hopefully it's an open Casket people can look and go, oh, that was.
- 35:04That was Christian.
- 35:05And or so that some may people think that is still him and they're grieving my loss, or may even be people say, thank God he's dead.
- 35:12I'm so happy about that.
- 35:13You know, they're putting their feelings to me onto to that.
- 35:16So you can argue to an extent that it still is.
- 35:20I would say ultimately, no, but I would understand someone who made the opposite argument.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:24Like, philosophically, there's a lot of interesting arguments here.
- 35:27Like, if you were to somehow completely take my consciousness and put it into a robot somewhere and then put some AI into my body, which one's me?
- 35:36That's not a question I'm prepared to answer.
- 35:39I don't know if there was an exact clone of me with all the same memories.
- 35:43Which one's really me?
- 35:44Is it just me or is it the clone?
- 35:46It doesn't matter if we switch consciousness because we have the same memories.
- 35:49Still don't know.
- 35:50Philosophy is hard, but that's what these games do.
- 35:53So we're going to attempt a little bit in the game, Riku has this thought.
- 35:59He's going to take the heart of Pinocchio.
- 36:01He's going to steal this puppet's heart and put it into Kyrie's body, and that's going to make Kyrie come back again.
- 36:07Now, what he doesn't know, and what we, the gamer now know, is that Kyrie's heart is actually in Sora, like, concealed away.
- 36:14So hypothetically, if Riku was successful and took the puppet's heart and put it into Kairi and she woke up, who's Kairi?
- 36:22The body or Kairi's heart inside Asora,.
- 36:25How much of Pinocchio remains?
- 36:27It would be the question.
- 36:28That's my question.
- 36:30Would he take over the body because it's his heart, as it were being put in there, I would say it's probably Pinocchio, like, literally puppeting around Kyrie's body in that circumstance, which irony.
- 36:43Yes.
- 36:44Yeah.
- 36:44Which is what the game was getting at, actually.
- 36:47Really well done choosing Pinocchio.
- 36:48Chef's Kiss.
- 36:49Chef's Kiss, guys.
- 36:50Oh, man.
- 36:51Yeah.
- 36:52Like, I do like, to me, it really is a hard one.
- 36:54The way that I grew up.
- 36:56Theologically, I was almost taught, not blatantly, but I was almost kind of suggestively taught to hate my body.
- 37:03Like this thing I need to do away with.
- 37:05It's only the spirit that matters.
- 37:06It's only, you know, like, I feed the soul.
- 37:08And what happens to this doesn't matter.
- 37:11But the more I've matured, the more I've learned.
- 37:12I'm like, the two are kind of inseparable.
- 37:14Like, how I feed, literally the food I eat can change my emotions and change my receptivity to even a church service.
- 37:23How awake I am when I'm trying to read the Bible, how, you know, like, all the stuff is connected necessarily.
- 37:29So trying to untangle it almost seems like nonsense to me.
- 37:33The older I get, I'm like, I just.
- 37:35I don't think that's how it works.
- 37:36But, like, we have cases.
- 37:38And to me, this is like.
- 37:39Would be actually really hard where, like, someone's experienced some kind of traumatic thing in their brain and they went from someone who went to church all the time, read the Bible, loved Jesus, and then all of a sudden,
- 37:47now they're cursing all the time and want to, like, they're violent, all this stuff because something happened physically to their brain.
- 37:53And if you were to ask me, hey, they said the Lord's Prayer back when they were this person, did they lose salvation because of their brain damage?
- 38:01Man, that's in the Lord's hands.
- 38:04But I do think that's the question these we ask.
- 38:07Here's the thing that I think probably is the annoying answer.
- 38:10I think it is foolish to try to act like we have the answers of, like, who's really who.
- 38:17But I also think it's foolish to act like the questions don't matter and we don't need to ask them.
- 38:23You know, like.
- 38:25Like, it would be absurd of me to think that, okay, I can just take care of my soul or just take care of my body and I don't need to care about the rest, that's absurd.
- 38:33And to, like, really think about, like, if I can separate it and put my consciousness into a robot one day, like, all of it's a little absurd to me.
- 38:41But also I think that it's irresponsible not to actually contemplate, like, what does happen to my soul.
- 38:46What if I get brain damage and all of a sudden I start having violent tendencies?
- 38:49That's not really me.
- 38:50That's not who I am.
- 38:51Am I accountable?
- 38:52I think it's still important to think about these things, to ask and stay in prayer and be the guide to protect me.
- 38:58Ultimately, at the end of the day, I believe God is love, and I trust God to show mercy and to show love, and I trust myself to be fallible, to not know what mercy looks like, to not know
- 39:08what love looks like all the time.
- 39:09But, you know, I do my best And I think that includes trying to ask these questions and answering it faithfully.
- 39:16But at the end of the day, it would be absurd for me to think I had the answer.
- 39:20I'm with you there.
- 39:20To extent the idea we need to pursue reasonable questions and reasonable answers as best as possible.
- 39:27Like if you were feeling down one day or you like snapped at me, said, oh, no, Joshua has been replaced by a spaceman from Venus, is probably not the answer.
- 39:36That's not a reasonable assertion unless you have gone to Venus and somehow come back and survive that atmosphere.
- 39:42But I go, oh, wait, what happened to him?
- 39:45Did he suffer another brain injury after the first one?
- 39:49Has he suffered from something else?
- 39:52All the loss that has been impacting you lately, like, would that be why he would act this way?
- 39:57Well, possibly way more possible than the other thing I brought up earlier, so I could use that as evidence.
- 40:03Okay, well, because of this, maybe I should pursue this and reach them.
- 40:06Or let's say you were that person.
- 40:08Let's say after your initial, you know, brain injury from the car crash, like, you went completely in another direction as far as spirituality was concerned.
- 40:19And like, you hated God.
- 40:20You wanted nothing to do with him.
- 40:21You had moments, as you've shared before, of like, doubts and the like.
- 40:25That's not what I'm talking about here.
- 40:26Like, if you want, like super ultra atheist or whatever, like, my answer would be, yeah, you're still saying now, whether or not this creates a second personality inside of you, that's an interesting sci fi concept, but I can't
- 40:38tell you for sure.
- 40:38But what I can see is someone who needs help.
- 40:41And what I can do for that person is, okay, you're suffering because of this or because of this.
- 40:44What can I do with you right now to help understand what you're going through, to help you through this process?
- 40:49I think that's more.
- 40:50There is an answer, don't get me wrong, but there's something more important involved.
- 40:54I think we're probably going to disagree a little bit.
- 40:57This is where I think the questions are more important than the answers.
- 40:59Sometimes, like, I think it is important to ask the questions, but sometimes that's more important than having the answer.
- 41:05And when I look like biblically, here's one of the things that really annoys me about myself and other Western Westerners, because I don't want to say Western mindset because, like, yeah, I'm part of that.
- 41:14Guys, when we pray, it's almost like we have to know the right thing to pray or what God's going to do.
- 41:20Before we pray it, you know, it's like, well, I don't want to pray for that because, you know, God doesn't show mercy on people who are in sin.
- 41:26Or he, you know, God doesn't, like the gay or whatever.
- 41:29Like, we come with this.
- 41:30Like, we need to have a preconceived notion of what God's going to do ahead of time before we pray.
- 41:34For some reason, like, I feel like a lot of times that's the attitude.
- 41:37And like, a lot of times in the Bible, some of the stuff they're praying for, they're like, hey, God, show mercy on Sodom.
- 41:42And you're like, what?
- 41:45You're like.
- 41:46To me, a lot of Christians that I know, it's like, well, no, of course God's gonna judge Sodom, but maybe he'll, you know, save some.
- 41:51And like, yeah, that's.
- 41:52That's good.
- 41:53I just.
- 41:54I find it really interesting in the Bible, typically people are praying and it's stuff that they have no right to ask of God, and they know they have no right to ask that of God, but they're gonna pray
- 42:02it anyway.
- 42:03And I don't know, like, maybe this is a me problem, but, like, I.
- 42:06I want to get more of that where, like, I'm not worried about, oh, wait, is this a sin?
- 42:09Is this not a sin?
- 42:10Or is it okay for me to.
- 42:11Like, sometimes I was like, hey, I'm going to pray for mercy and love on Christian.
- 42:15Even if I'm like, convinced that, I don't know, wearing the kind of shirt he's wearing will send someone to hell.
- 42:22Like, I know that for a fact and he'll never stop arguing with me and he's stuck in his ways.
- 42:27I'm still going to just pray that God shows love and mercy.
- 42:29Yes.
- 42:30Who cares if I'm praying for no reason?
- 42:32Like, I think God still honors the heart even if mercy can't be shown in that scenario.
- 42:38Believe it or not, as great as Anime and Nomura and all these people are at creating nonsense ways that people just come back to life and things work out somehow.
- 42:45God's even better at it, thank God.
- 42:49God will absolutely find a way that Riku is going to come back and it'll be okay.
- 42:54If that is God's will, it's going to happen.
- 42:57Even if it temporarily looks like ansem.
- 42:58For a bit.
- 43:02More on that later.
- 43:05Did you have any other thoughts as far as, like, the themes or story or worlds gameplay of Kino Hearts 1.
- 43:11Before we start wrapping this up, I.
- 43:13Would say one thing.
- 43:14That always stood out to me that I have really appreciated about this game is Beast's introduction and with the not even just lore implications, but like, person, like, his love for Belle is that strong that he does the
- 43:27impossible.
- 43:28He transcends from his world to.
- 43:30To a separate world to track her down and bring her back and save her, even though by the.
- 43:36The rules of the world, that shouldn't happen.
- 43:38And yet it did, because his love was that strong.
- 43:41And I said, especially I.
- 43:42I rewatched the movie not too long ago and I really, really enjoy that film, but there's so many people out there.
- 43:48Oh, Stockholm syndrome.
- 43:49Oh, blah, blah, blah.
- 43:50It's like, number one, you haven't watched the film and actually understood it.
- 43:53Sorry, media literally is so low.
- 43:54But, like, this is like proof of that outside of that film.
- 43:57Like, the writers saw who Beast was in that film and said, yeah, this makes perfect sense.
- 44:03He can do the impossible for the sake of love.
- 44:06And yet, once again, hokey.
- 44:07And it's okay to be hokey and cringe sometimes when you've got a point to make.
- 44:11Yeah, Yeah.
- 44:13I, too, I could pick apart world by world and tell you stuff about every character because everything in this game mattered.
- 44:21Like, it wasn't there for no reason.
- 44:23There was a reason they used Pinocchio.
- 44:25We kind of already touched on.
- 44:26Right.
- 44:26There's a reason they use Hercules to talk about what it means to be a true hero.
- 44:29There's a reason Tarzan was like, all of the pieces are there for a reason.
- 44:32And it's just a beautifully crafted game.
- 44:35One, I do want to shout out Halloween Town.
- 44:37I had never seen the Nightmare Before Christmas till after I played this game.
- 44:41So this was a crazy introduction to Tim Burton's world.
- 44:45But the way that they use that world to kind of exploit, like, can we control the heartless?
- 44:50Can we control the monsters?
- 44:51Does science give us the ability to control the mystical, the spiritual, whatever, and just kind of having that redu.
- 45:00Like, no.
- 45:01And also, why would you want to, like.
- 45:03I don't know, the way that the science of the characters in Tim Burton's world, there kind of clash with the mysticism and light versus dark kind of messaging and how even Jack was part of that message of, like,
- 45:16friendship.
- 45:17I don't know.
- 45:17I think the inclusion of that world was just really powerful.
- 45:20I like that one a lot, too.
- 45:21And I like when you learn to glide from Tinkerbell.
- 45:24Of course.
- 45:24Yeah.
- 45:25Because.
- 45:25Because one, thematically makes sense, and two, having the ability to glide made the game so much more fun.
- 45:34Yeah.
- 45:35All right.
- 45:36All right, let's wrap this one up.
- 45:38That was my favorite Kingdom Hearts game, guys, which is my favorite game.
- 45:42So I didn't even.
- 45:43Didn't even need to say Kingdom Hearts game.
- 45:45I could have just said my favorite game.
- 45:46There you go.
- 45:47If you want to hear us talk some about the leaks, we're going to do that.
- 45:50We're going to talk about some of the worlds and different stuff that was revealed in those trophies that were leaked on Steam for Kingdom Hearts 4, just for our official members of systematic ecology.
- 45:59So if you want to hear us, that'll be our bonus segment.
- 46:01This time, head over there and we'll talk about it.
- 46:03For now, though, given recommendations.
- 46:05Christian, do you have any recommendation for our listeners?
- 46:08Yeah.
- 46:08As doomsday looms upon us.
- 46:10Secret wars after that.
- 46:12I have been rereading the original Secret wars from 84 and then the Jonathan Hickman one, 2015, 16, thereabouts.
- 46:20And both are stellar for different reasons.
- 46:22Like, yes, the first Secret wars is let's throw action figures up against each other and maybe there'll be a story.
- 46:28I'm fine with that.
- 46:29But both of them are good for different reasons.
- 46:35Recently, I cut up a Futurama and I think the new Futurama season still really hold up.
- 46:40So if you haven't seen Futurama in a while and we haven't seen, like the new Hulu episodes, they're still pretty good.
- 46:45I think they're worth it.
- 46:47So that'll be my recommendation this time.
- 46:49I also recommend you guys checking out one of these T shirts.
- 46:53You know, we had the the Throne of Geeks shirt up right now.
- 46:57It's got some of the different weapons that look like weapons from some of our favorite franchises like Kingdom Hearts and Marvel and different stuff.
- 47:05All just, you know, nodding our hat, praying a little, little tribute to all the cool pop culture references.
- 47:11And it just, you know, it's simple and clean.
- 47:14I like designs like that.
