- 0:30Speaker 1: Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And we had Julian Edelman here watching practice today. I
- 0:38Speaker 2: wonder if they're asking his opinion.
- 0:40Speaker 1: While you're here.
- 0:40Speaker 5: I'm curious, what are your thoughts on this?
- 0:42Speaker 2: Julian said to the rookies, you're too young.
- 0:44Speaker 5: You're too young.
- 0:46Speaker 1: You know, last few practices, me and Evan watched up top,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Paul's been down below with the note alls.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You know.
- 0:50Speaker 6: Look, I was critical of Mac on Tuesday because, unlike
- 0:54Speaker 6: some of my colleagues, I have a pretty high standard.
- 0:56Speaker 5: It was about ten twenty that he left and he
- 0:59Speaker 5: came back ten five.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Well, he has to go through security, so it takes
- 1:03Speaker 2: him longer.
- 1:03Speaker 5: Thirteen eighty you know whatever, that's a drive. Well, no,
- 1:07Speaker 5: it's a scripted situation. They put the ball.
- 1:09Speaker 1: At a yard line, right, it's a drive ahead.
- 1:10Speaker 5: No, it's not a drive because if the play is incomplete,
- 1:13Speaker 5: it goes to the four yard line. The next well,
- 1:15Speaker 5: a drive would be we have to complete a pass
- 1:17Speaker 5: to get it to the fourth. So I just want
- 1:18Speaker 5: to make sure that the listeners understand what actually happened,
- 1:21Speaker 5: all right, not what you call.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Who's the third receiver on this team?
- 1:23Speaker 6: Tomaro Douglas.
- 1:24Speaker 2: We made a little news here though. Paul Perillo says
- 1:27Speaker 2: that the Mario Douglas is the third best receiver on
- 1:29Speaker 2: this team.
- 1:32Speaker 5: I think he's the best guy for the role, right, Yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 5: and again Evan Lazarre said that, just just to repeat,
- 1:39Speaker 5: take my name out of your mind.
- 1:40Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:42Speaker 7: Presented by Toyota's official website. For deals, buy a Toyota
- 1:46Speaker 7: dot com.
- 1:48Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday. Here,
- 1:52Speaker 2: it's Let's Stadium, and we're doing a little early Patriots
- 1:55Speaker 2: Unfiltered because practices this afternoon.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Feel like we should be watching din or something.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know, uh and all that stuff literally series. Yeah,
- 2:07Speaker 2: but we'll be here from ten to twelve it's Deuce,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it's Evan, it's Paul, it's myself, it's Matt and the
- 2:12Speaker 2: booth talking Patriots. This is our last regular Patriots unfiltered
- 2:17Speaker 2: this week because on Thursday, we have our first preseason
- 2:21Speaker 2: game and we'll also have our first pre and postgame show.
- 2:26Speaker 6: Uh.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And that's gonna be from what four thirty to thirty
- 2:30Speaker 2: to six thirty on Thursday, And I'm assuming hard he's
- 2:33Speaker 2: gonna be here.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Hardy will be okay, great, he's excited. Yep.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Good to have him back for another season. This is
- 2:39Speaker 2: what is twentieth season with us, I believe.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I believe so, And we'll have so four thirty to
- 2:45Speaker 5: six thirty. We're gonna pencil in at about four forty
- 2:47Speaker 5: six the Jaws talk. See if we can get back
- 2:50Speaker 5: to that always yeah, okay, we always working.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So it's a big segment on John. It's a big
- 2:55Speaker 2: week here at j Lette Stadium. You know, you're always
- 2:58Speaker 2: excited for the first pre sees the game until they
- 3:01Speaker 2: start playing and then it's like, Okay, realize, let's get
- 3:03Speaker 2: to the regular season. Yeah yeah, now's I think you know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: the intrigue is who gets who plays and for how
- 3:09Speaker 2: long you know, you know, there's a couple players, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: besides Pop Douglas who's been popping. Keishan Bhute has been
- 3:19Speaker 2: getting a lot of love lately.
- 3:20Speaker 1: He has been getting a lot of love. But I
- 3:22Speaker 1: I mean, I'm gonna stay. I'm going to remain where
- 3:24Speaker 1: I am. And I wrote it yesterday. I just like
- 3:25Speaker 1: he's fine. Like people are like, are they gonna cut
- 3:28Speaker 1: talking thrtification. He's had one or two catches every day.
- 3:31Speaker 1: It's nice, it's fine. None of them will be of
- 3:33Speaker 1: the variety. The one yesterday that everyone's going about. I
- 3:36Speaker 1: thought it was a terrible throw by Malie Cunningham, Like
- 3:38Speaker 1: great catch, terrible throw. Everyone's going crazy.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So but that's my sticking on, just sticking on Booty,
- 3:45Speaker 2: you know, I'll stick with it was a good catch.
- 3:48Speaker 2: But the thing is like at the starting camp he
- 3:50Speaker 2: was doing nothing right and he is starting to do
- 3:53Speaker 2: a little bit more.
- 3:54Speaker 1: So that's what you want to see. Absolutely, yeah, absolutely,
- 3:57Speaker 1: I just I think it's I think it's a problem
- 3:59Speaker 1: when people report things and then fans like myself that
- 4:02Speaker 1: used to not go to practice and had to rely
- 4:04Speaker 1: entirely on reports, sometimes it becomes a game of telephone
- 4:07Speaker 1: and you start to extrapolate maybe what you want to
- 4:10Speaker 1: hear or what you think you're reading, right, And I
- 4:12Speaker 1: just like, I'm kind of on the pump the brakes
- 4:13Speaker 1: on the Booty. It's been good. I'm not trying to,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but I just like I don't see like, oh, he's
- 4:17Speaker 1: gonna kick tech Kwon Thornton off the roster because he
- 4:19Speaker 1: made a nice catch yesterday. Like, I think it's a
- 4:22Speaker 1: little early for that.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I would agree with Mike. I think those two
- 4:25Speaker 5: things have been a little bit overplayed both ways. I
- 4:29Speaker 5: think Booty has been overplayed a little bit. Yeah, he
- 4:31Speaker 5: has come on. I think there's no question. The last
- 4:34Speaker 5: i'd say four or five practices, he's starting to show
- 4:37Speaker 5: up a little bit more. Thornton, I think his demise
- 4:41Speaker 5: has been.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Overplayed a little bit.
- 4:42Speaker 5: Yeah, he was missing from a lot of practices. He
- 4:45Speaker 5: came back, and I think that Belichick and Bill O'Brien
- 4:49Speaker 5: wanted him to sort of work with Zappy a little
- 4:51Speaker 5: bit to work his way back into the mix. Like,
- 4:54Speaker 5: I don't think that was like this telling sign that
- 4:57Speaker 5: Thornton's on his way out.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Now.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I would say that Thornton's been a little bit disappointing,
- 5:02Speaker 5: like you would have thought, you know, year two, you
- 5:04Speaker 5: want to see a little bit more. I think whatever
- 5:07Speaker 5: issue that he had in the spring lingered into the summer,
- 5:10Speaker 5: you know, reportedly a soft tissue injury. He's been slow
- 5:14Speaker 5: getting underway here. He's had some opportunities to make some plays,
- 5:18Speaker 5: hasn't always made them. I'd like to see him do
- 5:19Speaker 5: a little bit more. But I think Booty's been a
- 5:22Speaker 5: little bit overplayed the last couple of days, and Thornton's
- 5:24Speaker 5: been a little bit overplayed in a negative.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Way the last couple of days.
- 5:29Speaker 5: I don't I agree with Mike. I don't think Thornton's
- 5:31Speaker 5: going anywhere.
- 5:32Speaker 2: I saw Thornton the last couple of days, and there
- 5:34Speaker 2: were a couple of instances where okay, he gets there's
- 5:37Speaker 2: the speed, Yeah, there's the speed we're talking about.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just you know. I think my thing with
- 5:41Speaker 1: him is that, you know, he's just he's not strong
- 5:43Speaker 1: at the catch point, and as you just see him
- 5:45Speaker 1: a couple of times when it's like a contested catch,
- 5:47Speaker 1: he kind of goes flying and probably not surprising, it's
- 5:50Speaker 1: not his game, but I thought.
- 5:50Speaker 5: I saw him make a couple of those plays last summer,
- 5:53Speaker 5: and that's what sort of got me, you know, enthused
- 5:55Speaker 5: about him, Like he didn't need to be one of
- 5:57Speaker 5: those guys that just ran by everybody and caught passes
- 6:00Speaker 5: by himself.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He could fight for the ball.
- 6:02Speaker 5: I thought he had a couple of opportunities the last
- 6:04Speaker 5: couple of practices, one in particular on Sunday, I think
- 6:08Speaker 5: you in you know, the one that Evan talked about
- 6:11Speaker 5: on the podcast, the post corner where he looked like
- 6:13Speaker 5: he was wide open. Throw was definitely late. It was
- 6:16Speaker 5: a throw from Zappi that was underthrown and late. Rodney
- 6:19Speaker 5: Randall came back and bothered it. But I didn't really
- 6:21Speaker 5: think he did much to get in in the fray
- 6:23Speaker 5: and fight for the ball, you know. So you'd like
- 6:25Speaker 5: to see maybe some of those kinds of plays be
- 6:29Speaker 5: catches booties catch yesterday was an incredible catch, but like
- 6:34Speaker 5: think of like the OBJ catch. Okay, and it wasn't
- 6:37Speaker 5: as as impressive as that, but think of that catch.
- 6:39Speaker 5: But think about now if instead of it being Odell Beckham,
- 6:44Speaker 5: it was just it was Tim Smith.
- 6:48Speaker 1: He made that catch.
- 6:49Speaker 5: Like, just because the guy made an incredible individual play
- 6:53Speaker 5: doesn't necessarily mean he's had a really good training camp.
- 6:57Speaker 5: That was a great catch yesterday, as Mike said, in
- 7:00Speaker 5: to scout work from Malie Cunningham again kind of telling
- 7:03Speaker 5: you the players that he's working with as opposed to
- 7:06Speaker 5: sure to Mario Douglas who from the second to third
- 7:10Speaker 5: day of camp has really worked extensively with Mac Jones,
- 7:14Speaker 5: Juju Smith, Schuster, Devonte Parker, Kendrick Bourne.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Yeah, even from the get go, I mean early in camp,
- 7:20Speaker 1: Douglas was with the kind of that top group air.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I mean not just eleven guys, but probably fifteen guys
- 7:25Speaker 1: that are rotating with the top offensive line, the top
- 7:28Speaker 1: running backs, the top receivers. He's one of those guys
- 7:30Speaker 1: from the get go, and you know he does jump
- 7:32Speaker 1: off the field with just how quick he especially in
- 7:34Speaker 1: that one on ones.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Overall, I think the receivers have been okay. Parker's been
- 7:38Speaker 2: showing up a little bit more after.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Parker's another one who's made like a play every practice,
- 7:43Speaker 5: yet like one I'd like to see a little.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Bit more, I know, and it's usually his bread and butter,
- 7:48Speaker 1: and we know that that's in the bag right now and.
- 7:49Speaker 5: High point deep faths that's what they.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Do, and I mean if I was an opponent, I
- 7:53Speaker 1: would say alert that anytime you think he's.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Gonna be so, Like I said, I think I think
- 7:57Speaker 2: the receivers have been okay, I don't see yet is okay.
- 8:02Speaker 2: The Patriots are going to be tough to defend. And
- 8:04Speaker 2: I mean in the passing game and coverage, like there's
- 8:06Speaker 2: no guys that are just you know, breaking ankles.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Although in the it's a great point.
- 8:11Speaker 5: And this is why I get back to Thornton because
- 8:14Speaker 5: I think Thornton is the one guy who's a little
- 8:17Speaker 5: different now.
- 8:18Speaker 2: One on one, he looked good.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Douglas has has has quickness out of the slot, and
- 8:22Speaker 5: I think horizontally he's going to be a you know,
- 8:25Speaker 5: a guy that they're going to throw a lot of
- 8:26Speaker 5: passes to.
- 8:27Speaker 2: But you just hope with his size he can hold
- 8:30Speaker 2: up if he making the squad right now.
- 8:32Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's also hard to extrapolate him as you
- 8:35Speaker 5: know what, just pencil him in for seventy eighty catches.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, maybe you know. I don't know.
- 8:40Speaker 5: He's been impressive. I think he's been certainly something to
- 8:43Speaker 5: be excited about as a newcomer. But what they need
- 8:47Speaker 5: is something to open everything up and I'm not talking
- 8:50Speaker 5: about to take the top off the defense guy. I'm
- 8:52Speaker 5: talking about someone who the other team has to worry about,
- 8:56Speaker 5: and I don't think right now unless Thornton emerges as that.
- 9:00Speaker 5: I think Born Parker and Smith Schuster are guys that
- 9:04Speaker 5: you can cover and they're gonna be slamming down. Mike says,
- 9:08Speaker 5: you know exactly right about Parker. They're gonna throw him
- 9:10Speaker 5: down the field every once in a while. You just
- 9:12Speaker 5: have to be aware of that and fight for the ball.
- 9:14Speaker 5: You're not gonna run by you. So yeah, I think
- 9:17Speaker 5: there's one guy, is Thoughnton, that could potentially emerge as
- 9:21Speaker 5: as someone who could take some of that pressure. I
- 9:24Speaker 5: see a lot of defensive backs as this season goes on,
- 9:27Speaker 5: lining up within ten yards of the line of scrimmage
- 9:30Speaker 5: at all times because there's just no fear of anything
- 9:33Speaker 5: over the top.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Unless you blow a coverage, and that is a possibility
- 9:36Speaker 1: I think will Bill O'Brien a little bit. But I
- 9:38Speaker 1: want to just highlight what you said, Fred about the
- 9:40Speaker 1: one on once yesterday open field full tackling. I thought
- 9:43Speaker 1: Thornton was surprisingly good at those, and I mean you
- 9:45Speaker 1: would think he would be good at those, but for
- 9:47Speaker 1: just somebody who's tall and lanky and you don't really
- 9:49Speaker 1: think of him as like a phone booth quickness, side
- 9:52Speaker 1: to side kind of a guy. He was tough yesterday,
- 9:54Speaker 1: so you know it is a sign that he can
- 9:56Speaker 1: move well. I have. I haven't even come close to
- 9:58Speaker 1: writing him off. I mean, I think I'm not him
- 10:00Speaker 1: off yet.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I'm not.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think he's like Paul said, he's got a lot
- 10:03Speaker 1: of what they need. But I share the similar concerns
- 10:05Speaker 1: that you know, a lot of what we see this
- 10:06Speaker 1: year is the play to Parker, a lot of out
- 10:09Speaker 1: of the backfield, little wheel routes, little hitches, you know,
- 10:12Speaker 1: just the short stuff. You don't see a lot of
- 10:14Speaker 1: like downfield well choreographed passing routes where guys are catching
- 10:18Speaker 1: the ball in rhythm and running with it. It's, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: just a lot of check on stuf. So I don't
- 10:21Speaker 1: I don't want to get overworked up about it. But
- 10:23Speaker 1: that's now it's a it's all kind of that or
- 10:25Speaker 1: that I did that.
- 10:27Speaker 5: I did think yesterday we saw a little bit more
- 10:30Speaker 5: of some of the I wouldn't call them deep, but
- 10:33Speaker 5: like some over routes or you know, guys dragging across
- 10:36Speaker 5: the field, you know, fifteen eighty yards Kasiki caught one,
- 10:41Speaker 5: So I think it's you know, and I thought it
- 10:43Speaker 5: was interesting to listen to the quarterbacks talk after practice yesterday.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Bill had mentioned that he felt like they had most
- 10:48Speaker 5: everything in by this point. Zappy said he estimated, you know,
- 10:52Speaker 5: about eighty percent. He felt like they were further along
- 10:55Speaker 5: with installation then they they felt they would be at
- 10:57Speaker 5: this time, and Max sort of backed that up. So
- 11:01Speaker 5: I think you're starting to see some of that stuff
- 11:03Speaker 5: slowly getting integrated into what we're seeing at practice. You know,
- 11:08Speaker 5: of course, right in time for us to be you know,
- 11:11Speaker 5: asked to leave practice, which is gonna happen soon if
- 11:14Speaker 5: it's if today's not the last day we get to
- 11:16Speaker 5: watch we yeah, you know, you guys will get to
- 11:18Speaker 5: see the joint practices in Green Bay and Tennessee. But
- 11:22Speaker 5: it's interesting coming to an end soon.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You'd always prefer to have an offense that a defense
- 11:29Speaker 2: has to game plan for, yes, And I feel like
- 11:31Speaker 2: on this team we have to game plan for their defense,
- 11:36Speaker 2: you know, and it should be the other way around.
- 11:38Speaker 5: I mean, I still unfortunately feel that right that's that's yeah,
- 11:41Speaker 5: I get what you're saying right.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Now their best weapon to me feels like Bill O'Brien, yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you know.
- 11:45Speaker 2: In his mind, Yeah, and his game plan. How can
- 11:48Speaker 2: he put figuring out the other defense and game planning
- 11:51Speaker 2: for their weaknesses where you should have an offense that
- 11:54Speaker 2: they have to game plan for, you know what I mean?
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, no things to think about, And I mean I
- 11:58Speaker 1: do think there are little things. I mean, you got
- 11:59Speaker 1: toighlight Parker and I think Kasiki has had a strong
- 12:02Speaker 1: couple of days and he's starting to come on a
- 12:03Speaker 1: little bit, so that could be another element. You know,
- 12:06Speaker 1: Hunter Henry's at a good camp too, So you know
- 12:08Speaker 1: what's Bill O'Brien going to do with those two tight ends.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I'd even kind of put Socle in that nex too.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I think it's possible he kind of has an early
- 12:14Speaker 1: down role within that rotation too. So I I'd love
- 12:18Speaker 1: to see more out of out of Booty. I'd love
- 12:20Speaker 1: to see him continue to to I mean, I think
- 12:22Speaker 1: it'd be great.
- 12:22Speaker 5: I think he'll get a chance. I think Kim and
- 12:24Speaker 5: Douglas will get a chance to play Thursday Night. I
- 12:26Speaker 5: think some of those younger guys I wouldn't expect to
- 12:29Speaker 5: see a lot of the the veteran players, and you know,
- 12:32Speaker 5: I don't know how much we're going to get to
- 12:34Speaker 5: see of the guys. We want to see it come together.
- 12:36Speaker 2: The offensive line going to have that joint practices next week,
- 12:39Speaker 2: so that's where they're going to get all their reps,
- 12:41Speaker 2: and you probably want to save them for that.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I mean I would just say yes. But also the
- 12:45Speaker 1: offensive line is so thin that like, yeah, well they're
- 12:48Speaker 1: going to have to at least flirt with playing some
- 12:50Speaker 1: guys you might not want to just based on I mean, there's.
- 12:52Speaker 5: A chance you're missing four offensive linemen. You know, if
- 12:55Speaker 5: you wanted to play a real game Thursday night, I
- 12:57Speaker 5: think you'd have to probably go with like Andrews be
- 13:00Speaker 5: the only one that would be a starter, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 5: Like I don't. I don't think Cole Strange, after missing
- 13:05Speaker 5: all this practice would be ready to play a game
- 13:07Speaker 5: Thursday night, and certainly a when you is still on pup.
- 13:10Speaker 5: Trent Brown, he's another one that talked yesterday. He said
- 13:13Speaker 5: he's dealing with an injury. It's not a contract related thing.
- 13:17Speaker 5: You know, I take him at face value, but he
- 13:19Speaker 5: wouldn't play. He's not going to play Thursday night. So
- 13:22Speaker 5: even if you wanted to play mac Jones, I'm not
- 13:24Speaker 5: sure that it would be the wisest course of action.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Do you think Cunningham might get actually, do you think
- 13:28Speaker 1: he'll get snaps as his quarterbacks? I do. It's interesting,
- 13:30Speaker 1: I do.
- 13:32Speaker 5: That's my time, boys, twos and girls, everybody. Malik Cunningham.
- 13:36Speaker 5: You know, nine nine pm Eastern ish, he's in the
- 13:40Speaker 5: game Discount Studio. I'll be ready to go. You know,
- 13:46Speaker 5: the McCarty's you can have them on in the background.
- 13:48Speaker 1: That's fine. They'll have plenty to say. I'm sure you can.
- 13:50Speaker 5: We can too, screen it, right, Freddy.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:52Speaker 2: The Patriots announced on Sunday that they're going to have
- 13:54Speaker 2: an alternate telecast of the preseason games, the mccordy Twin Cast,
- 13:59Speaker 2: live from Jason mccordy's basement in New Jersey. Uh, they'll
- 14:03Speaker 2: be doing, you know, just like the Manning cast. It'll
- 14:06Speaker 2: be on another channel.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I think.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Well, actually, this one's on WBZ dot com, but the
- 14:12Speaker 2: one against uh Green Bay will be on Channel thirty eight,
- 14:16Speaker 2: so you can go back and forth between Zolac and
- 14:20Speaker 2: Soci and Paul and the mccordy's on the other channel
- 14:23Speaker 2: and if you're in Germany. You can even hear Sebastian
- 14:27Speaker 2: Vohmer and Marcus Khon doing it in Germany. So a
- 14:29Speaker 2: lot of a lot of preseason.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Stuff across the stream.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's it's a it's a big day Thursday
- 14:35Speaker 2: for us.
- 14:36Speaker 1: It's pretty cool. I I'm I'm I guess I'm happy
- 14:39Speaker 1: for Matsmith. I just think it's a great idea and
- 14:40Speaker 1: and and it's cool to see it all, you know,
- 14:42Speaker 1: kind of come together and something that's different for the league.
- 14:45Speaker 1: And you know, I know that maybe this is going
- 14:47Speaker 1: to help, you know, follow that path of the Manning
- 14:49Speaker 1: cast and continue to find alternate ways to make preseason
- 14:53Speaker 1: games interesting and you know a little bit more fun
- 14:55Speaker 1: to take in when people are zoning out on you know,
- 14:57Speaker 1: maybe Malie Hunnyam.
- 14:58Speaker 2: They turn the preseason game into like variety shows, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 2: you know, you know, the June Taylor Dancers come out,
- 15:04Speaker 2: and you know.
- 15:04Speaker 1: I mean you'll probably have like live betting at some
- 15:06Speaker 1: point where it'll be like.
- 15:07Speaker 2: Those do you remember, you know whatever that's June that
- 15:10Speaker 2: was the Jackie Gleeson show boy had the June Taylor Dancers.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Oh boy, that's an old one.
- 15:16Speaker 5: June Carter Cash, I've heard of the June Taylor dance
- 15:20Speaker 5: back when they had show.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I did not know the reference A variety show, be fun.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I was saying, they'll probably be live betting at some
- 15:27Speaker 1: point where it'll literally be like a game show where
- 15:29Speaker 1: you're like, all right, this drive, all right, this is
- 15:31Speaker 1: the bet, you know, and they'll put it right up
- 15:32Speaker 1: on screen and people will be I think those kind
- 15:34Speaker 1: of things like I don't know. Yeah, Evan, what are
- 15:38Speaker 1: you doing over there?
- 15:39Speaker 6: He was writing writing up Trey flowers reunion with the
- 15:43Speaker 6: Patriots official.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Oh why did you break that news?
- 15:47Speaker 6: Well, it broke before he came on the air, so I.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Thought he was just coming in for a visit.
- 15:53Speaker 1: No, no reports have him signing Ian Raport. Okay, so
- 15:58Speaker 1: Evan decided to without a quick report while we does
- 16:01Speaker 1: he play right tackle?
- 16:02Speaker 6: He does not. But interesting stat that I'm sure Paul
- 16:07Speaker 6: probably knows this. During Trey Flowers' first four years with
- 16:10Speaker 6: the Patriots, eight and one in the postseason with him
- 16:13Speaker 6: on the team, But the Eagles Super Bowl is the
- 16:16Speaker 6: only loss. Just imagine like coming into the NFL and
- 16:19Speaker 6: you just win two super Bowls and like it's just
- 16:23Speaker 6: crazy like so many of these guys that started, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 6: in that era in the mid twenty tens, you know,
- 16:31Speaker 6: Toney Flowers, like those, Shack Mason, those guys just never
- 16:35Speaker 6: lost in the postseason.
- 16:36Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 16:37Speaker 5: I always thought about guys like that and then contrasted
- 16:40Speaker 5: them with guys like Mankins and Unwelker who never got it, Yeah,
- 16:44Speaker 5: who never were able.
- 16:45Speaker 1: To guys that like Joe Thomas, that spent their whole career.
- 16:48Speaker 5: Did you watch Joe Thomas thing on ESPN over the weekend?
- 16:51Speaker 5: That was like, it's almost like heartbreak.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I can't believe he played that many snaps in
- 16:55Speaker 1: a row. I mean, and you know, on a losing
- 16:58Speaker 1: snaps in a row, and did he have like I
- 17:01Speaker 1: don't even remember. They maybe make the playoffs once or twice.
- 17:03Speaker 5: His first year they went ten and six. I don't
- 17:05Speaker 5: think they made the playoffs. But they went ten and six,
- 17:07Speaker 5: and he was like, Okay, this is what I thought.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Then they went over twelve years later.
- 17:13Speaker 1: I'm fine with the Tray Flowers signing. I don't know
- 17:16Speaker 1: how much he has in the tank. Last two years
- 17:17Speaker 1: he's ended up on IR. I do think that they
- 17:20Speaker 1: need some edge depth. I just hope it doesn't come
- 17:22Speaker 1: at Keon White's kind of snaps, because I think that's
- 17:25Speaker 1: what key On White's gonna do. He's gonna kind of
- 17:27Speaker 1: being with me for a while.
- 17:30Speaker 5: Like that's my first thought is like, does this mean
- 17:32Speaker 5: that they're not really thinking that Keon White is ready
- 17:35Speaker 5: for a big role.
- 17:36Speaker 2: It could be he's not going to be ready.
- 17:39Speaker 1: And I mean, I just see key On White right now,
- 17:40Speaker 1: is at least it's just a rotational you know wise
- 17:44Speaker 1: That's what I was thinking, which is fine, but but
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know, lurking in the background September October, and then
- 17:48Speaker 1: if an injury happens or he starts to get it,
- 17:50Speaker 1: then he you know, really He.
- 17:52Speaker 5: Also kind of felt like the edge depth was more
- 17:55Speaker 5: to me like the oucha jude on edge depth then,
- 17:58Speaker 5: because I know it's probably dumb. Everyone will tell me
- 18:01Speaker 5: why it's done, but I don't look at those guys
- 18:04Speaker 5: even though their ends is the same as edge.
- 18:06Speaker 1: I know you're right totally.
- 18:07Speaker 6: You know, in this system, Judean j Jennings are outside linebackers. Yeah,
- 18:13Speaker 6: and those are defensive ends.
- 18:14Speaker 5: And why and when I when I talk about edge,
- 18:17Speaker 5: I'm thinking the stand up athlete on the ends opposed
- 18:20Speaker 5: to might drop that a two gapping you know, three
- 18:24Speaker 5: tech nigger five whatever, you know.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And they'll flirt with that stuff with wise. I mean,
- 18:27Speaker 1: why is probably like dropped in the coverage like eight times,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know it's something like that. They'll play with it
- 18:31Speaker 1: a little bit, but generally speaking, you know it's gonna
- 18:33Speaker 1: be why is this going to be the hand down
- 18:35Speaker 1: defensive end on the one edge and you're gonna have
- 18:36Speaker 1: this guy standing on the other usually when they're coming.
- 18:38Speaker 5: When I saw the Flowers visit yesterday, I was thinking, well,
- 18:41Speaker 5: this is this is like prototypical bill, you know, get
- 18:46Speaker 5: them in. He's been hurt a lot. We'll see, you know,
- 18:49Speaker 5: where he is physically, and then down the road if
- 18:51Speaker 5: I need to call on them, i'll know what I have.
- 18:54Speaker 6: Then the next day, I think he's twenty seven or
- 18:58Speaker 6: twenty eight. I wrote it in the article that is
- 19:01Speaker 6: he's young. Yeah he's not right.
- 19:06Speaker 1: August sixteenth, ninety three. But still that's like he's been
- 19:11Speaker 1: around forever.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Yeah, I do think. You know, last year they carried
- 19:15Speaker 6: Jamie Collins on the practice squad for most of the year,
- 19:17Speaker 6: and he was around and some of the players talked
- 19:20Speaker 6: about believe it or not, I didn't think of Jamie
- 19:23Speaker 6: Collins in this light, but as a mentor, as somebody
- 19:26Speaker 6: that was.
- 19:26Speaker 5: I think Troy Flowers could could be in that role, right,
- 19:28Speaker 5: I did not think Jamie Jamie Collins was.
- 19:31Speaker 6: Yeah, but people talked a lot of positive things about
- 19:34Speaker 6: Jamie Collins just as a locker room guy last year.
- 19:38Speaker 6: And I wonder if Trey Flowers comes in shows key
- 19:43Speaker 6: On White a few things, takes him under his wing.
- 19:45Speaker 5: All right, now, he did one sentence. I think the list.
- 19:50Speaker 6: I think that is. I'm more hoping that it's that
- 19:54Speaker 6: than him actually playing instead of ke On White. But
- 19:57Speaker 6: if you think about how they would ideally use ke
- 19:59Speaker 6: On White, it's exactly how they used to use Trey Flowers.
- 20:02Speaker 6: So I think that that's where my head is at.
- 20:05Speaker 6: Is it Hopefully it's it's more of a mentorship.
- 20:07Speaker 5: But that makes great union didn't even think of it.
- 20:10Speaker 5: That makes great sense because you can't get Keyon White.
- 20:13Speaker 5: I mean, he's got to be on your roster. He's
- 20:14Speaker 5: a luck as a second round pick. But you can
- 20:18Speaker 5: get Trey Flowers on your practice squad.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah, another guy who is kind of, you know, flashing
- 20:25Speaker 2: a little bit more and more is Jack Jones. A
- 20:29Speaker 2: lot of people I've heard I saw one one of
- 20:32Speaker 2: Paul's people on Twitter say that they thought he was
- 20:35Speaker 2: the best cornerback on the team.
- 20:37Speaker 1: I wouldn't agree with that. I think he makes plays
- 20:41Speaker 1: on the ball. I think he's a good player.
- 20:42Speaker 5: I mean every practice is going to knock down or
- 20:45Speaker 5: pick off a ten yard out every practice.
- 20:48Speaker 1: But I think he's also going to get up a
- 20:50Speaker 1: lot of balls down the field. On the field, I
- 20:52Speaker 1: think he's a little volatile too. I just like, you know,
- 20:54Speaker 1: there's an element of I feel like we'll have ups
- 20:57Speaker 1: and downs with him, like he'll make a great play
- 20:59Speaker 1: on the ball and then you know he'll and then
- 21:01Speaker 1: I get beat.
- 21:01Speaker 5: So I thought he really strug.
- 21:03Speaker 2: If it wasn't for his situation, I'd be starting to
- 21:06Speaker 2: get excited for him. But I'm not gonna go there
- 21:09Speaker 2: because I don't want to be disappointed.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't think he's played as well as evidently
- 21:14Speaker 5: people are writing because I don't really read a lot
- 21:16Speaker 5: of that stuff.
- 21:17Speaker 1: He hasn't played a lot of high level snaps until
- 21:19Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones has been out a little bit, and now
- 21:21Speaker 1: he's kind of sniffing.
- 21:21Speaker 5: It but I think he's been uneven. I think he's
- 21:23Speaker 5: made a lot of really good plays. I've seen a
- 21:25Speaker 5: lot of standout pass break up. Yes, I've also seen
- 21:28Speaker 5: a lot of completions.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Like it's kind of.
- 21:30Speaker 6: Only we only charted the past break up, correct.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I think it's been feast or famine a little bit
- 21:35Speaker 5: with Jack Jones.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I just I just think he's active, he's fast, he's
- 21:39Speaker 2: got decent instincts. Yeah, it just needs to be harnessed
- 21:42Speaker 2: a little bit. And that comes from obviously playing and coaching.
- 21:45Speaker 2: But you know, like I said, if it wasn't for
- 21:48Speaker 2: the situation, I'd be like, Okay, you know, we've got
- 21:51Speaker 2: some depth there.
- 21:52Speaker 1: He's a good third I mean he's like I think
- 21:54Speaker 1: he's a great third corner. You know, it's the rotational piece,
- 21:56Speaker 1: like it gives you some flexibility to put Jay Jones inside.
- 22:00Speaker 1: But we'll see what's up with Jonathan Jones.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Gonzales continues, you know, to prove that he's a worthy
- 22:07Speaker 2: he's the corner.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I mean then I think for the first time, I
- 22:11Speaker 2: would say this is the best step they've had a
- 22:13Speaker 2: corner in a while.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, at least since nineteen nineteen. Yeah, with JC and
- 22:18Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones and Stefan Gilmore. Yeayeah.
- 22:21Speaker 6: I think with Jack Jones off field stuff aside, you
- 22:26Speaker 6: have two guys in Gonzales and John Jones who are
- 22:29Speaker 6: really really steady man coverage guys that don't get burned
- 22:33Speaker 6: too often. And then you have your ballhawk on the
- 22:35Speaker 6: other side, and maybe he can take some more chances
- 22:38Speaker 6: to make some plays and play a little bit more
- 22:40Speaker 6: of his style of football because you have you know,
- 22:43Speaker 6: Gonzo's gonna take the number one and John Jones is
- 22:46Speaker 6: going to take the top slot guy, and you already
- 22:48Speaker 6: have those bases covered and he's sort of the third
- 22:51Speaker 6: guy that's allowed to ball. But to me, he's he's
- 22:54Speaker 6: their best ballhawk. Yes he's he's there J C. Jackson
- 22:58Speaker 6: right now, but in terms of down to down consistency,
- 23:01Speaker 6: that's that's not his game. So if he's the third
- 23:04Speaker 6: corner and he's just free to just kind of do
- 23:07Speaker 6: his thing, then I I don't necessarily mind it. But
- 23:10Speaker 6: if you're counting on Jack Jones to be your guy
- 23:13Speaker 6: against AJ Brown in Week one, then I'm not so
- 23:16Speaker 6: sure how excited about that I would be.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I mean, it's hard to make that plan now with
- 23:21Speaker 1: the uncertainty. I mean, he seems very confident on Twitter
- 23:23Speaker 1: that you know, the truth shall set him free, like
- 23:26Speaker 1: a lot of that kind of cryptic stuff. Yeah. Yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 1: he's xing a lot, he's exing it out.
- 23:31Speaker 5: I think with that lawyer that he wouldn't be doing
- 23:33Speaker 5: any of that.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I know, I know. Uh, just it's it's a it's
- 23:37Speaker 1: a big question mark right now. And I mean, just
- 23:39Speaker 1: you know, again, Jonathan Jones has now missed three practices,
- 23:42Speaker 1: so I don't know what that is. But I don't
- 23:45Speaker 1: think they got great depth. And if you don't know,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you know what up with Jack? I mean, all of
- 23:49Speaker 1: a sudden you're looking at Gonzales and Marcus Jones and
- 23:51Speaker 1: Miles Brian as your starting three.
- 23:53Speaker 5: Like it is funny because I did like they have
- 23:55Speaker 5: depth at safety and I think if you sort of
- 23:58Speaker 5: move some pieces around to haending on you know, Jalen
- 24:01Speaker 5: Mills as an example. But I agree with you. I
- 24:03Speaker 5: think that it's a little bit of a house of
- 24:05Speaker 5: cards at a few positions.
- 24:06Speaker 1: In corner is one of them.
- 24:07Speaker 5: And if Jack Jones is not part of the equation,
- 24:10Speaker 5: I don't think they have any depth there at all.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I mean Jonathan Jones is just so important, just because
- 24:14Speaker 1: it's so much he can do. I mean in the
- 24:15Speaker 1: leadership and the on field experience that he has replacing mccordy.
- 24:19Speaker 1: So I don't know, it's one to watch.
- 24:21Speaker 5: He'll be fine, Okay, Jonathan Jones will Yeah, No, I agree.
- 24:25Speaker 6: I agree with that minor.
- 24:26Speaker 2: I thought Cole Strange would be fine, and I haven't.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Seen him since.
- 24:29Speaker 5: I think he is. I think he is fine, Yeah,
- 24:31Speaker 5: I do. I mean, this is not based on anybody
- 24:34Speaker 5: telling me anything. I'm just watching. He's like he was
- 24:37Speaker 5: out a couple of days ago, he had the big
- 24:39Speaker 5: sleeve on his left leg. Yesterday when he was out,
- 24:41Speaker 5: he didn't have that on at all. I just think
- 24:43Speaker 5: they're being very, very very cautious, and I think that's
- 24:46Speaker 5: the way to go. He's not playing Thursday night. Just
- 24:49Speaker 5: let him get his his conditioning, you know, in check.
- 24:53Speaker 5: Hopefully that's the situation with Trent Brown. It's not a
- 24:55Speaker 5: major thing, you know, with a calf problem that he
- 24:58Speaker 5: had last year that caused him to miss some time.
- 25:01Speaker 1: That was one thing I was going to bring up,
- 25:02Speaker 1: like it kind of was weird to me that Trump
- 25:04Speaker 1: Brown got up to the podium and said he was injured.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Like that's not usually the Patriot way of you know,
- 25:09Speaker 1: hurt guys coming up and admitting it on the in
- 25:12Speaker 1: front of the podium.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Like it's just weird.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I mean, he came out, he's got his helmet and
- 25:17Speaker 1: he just stands there and watches like I like, I
- 25:19Speaker 1: don't know, I don't I don't get it. It just seems
- 25:21Speaker 1: weird to me, this whole situation.
- 25:23Speaker 2: But more importantly, will anybody be watching Hard Knocks?
- 25:26Speaker 8: No?
- 25:26Speaker 5: Oh that's tonight, right, yeah, yeah, someone will tell me
- 25:29Speaker 5: what was on.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:30Speaker 5: I usually that's like the for whatever reason, the talk
- 25:34Speaker 5: shows love that stuff and they played the clips and
- 25:37Speaker 5: I know and I feel like I saw it, like
- 25:39Speaker 5: I don't have to watch.
- 25:39Speaker 6: Yeah, all the good stuff will be on Twitter. Yeah,
- 25:42Speaker 6: so there's no reason to watch the.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Whole Not like that. Not a huge Hard Knocks fan
- 25:46Speaker 1: me neither. It's it's it's less about football now, it's
- 25:48Speaker 1: just more about the.
- 25:49Speaker 6: Well now it's even less about football because they're not
- 25:52Speaker 6: showing anybody get cut because the Jets think it's inhumane
- 25:55Speaker 6: to show people losing their jobs, so they're they're not
- 25:58Speaker 6: even doing the whole that whole dance anymore either.
- 26:02Speaker 1: If you're gonna get cut though, when you'd be like
- 26:03Speaker 1: put it on TV, I need a job, like get
- 26:05Speaker 1: it out there. Look, look how sad I look. Give
- 26:07Speaker 1: me some work.
- 26:07Speaker 5: It'd be funny if a dude just like looked into
- 26:09Speaker 5: the camera and go, yo, I'm available. Thirty one other
- 26:13Speaker 5: teams out there hit me up.
- 26:16Speaker 2: I I it'd be even better if they're like, you're
- 26:19Speaker 2: gonna cut me, you know, and I'll cut your chair
- 26:21Speaker 2: and throws it and you know, play at the cameras
- 26:24Speaker 2: the yeah, the drop that.
- 26:25Speaker 9: Team passed on me.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:28Speaker 5: I think there there's a way if the show was
- 26:31Speaker 5: done like sort of you know, twenty four to seven access,
- 26:35Speaker 5: that it could be interesting.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's not. And you know what, you know,
- 26:38Speaker 1: it can't be done like that. So I think some
- 26:40Speaker 1: of the most interesting stuff to me, And it goes
- 26:42Speaker 1: back to the football life with Bill and O nine.
- 26:45Speaker 1: It's just when all the coaches are sitting around the
- 26:46Speaker 1: table and each position coach kind of runs through his
- 26:49Speaker 1: guys and talks about what's good, what's bad, what's going on,
- 26:52Speaker 1: you know, and then the head coach kind of takes
- 26:54Speaker 1: it all and I just I think that stuff is
- 26:56Speaker 1: so interesting when you're getting you know, just kind of
- 26:58Speaker 1: not the hierarchy, but just kind of how the sausage
- 27:01Speaker 1: is made between the position coaches and analyzing their players,
- 27:04Speaker 1: feeding it to the coordinator and the head coach and
- 27:05Speaker 1: then you know those guys having to make the big
- 27:07Speaker 1: picture decisions. That that's the stuff I love, and you don't.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You don't really get that anymore. Like it's it's all
- 27:12Speaker 1: just dramatic music and they're like throwing pads around and
- 27:16Speaker 1: then you see, like, you know, somebody's girlfriend on the
- 27:18Speaker 1: sideline and they go give him a kiss, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 1: and then then practice is over all of a sudden,
- 27:21Speaker 1: like what do we get?
- 27:22Speaker 6: There's nothing, well because so a few years ago JJ
- 27:25Speaker 6: Watt mentioned that he picked up a snap count from
- 27:28Speaker 6: Hard Knocks, and ever since then, they've stripped it of
- 27:31Speaker 6: all of the good football stuff.
- 27:35Speaker 1: When he was like flipping the tire over, like he
- 27:37Speaker 1: would just like gratuitously out just do stupid stuff.
- 27:41Speaker 5: I don't like about it, and I know everybody hates
- 27:43Speaker 5: JJ Watt. I don't, but that's completely performative and they
- 27:47Speaker 5: and that happens every year. Somebody does that every year now,
- 27:51Speaker 5: JJ Watt's a huge personality, so he's the one that
- 27:54Speaker 5: he's the poster child for performing for the camera, right
- 27:58Speaker 5: hard O, Hardle on Hard.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Knocks, Hall of Fame, Harder Right.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:03Speaker 2: There was one of him when they were on Hard
- 28:06Speaker 2: Knocks where it's like you know, dusk, you know, like
- 28:09Speaker 2: everybody's gone and he's out like still hitting the pat.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I think that's what I'm talking about, to where he's
- 28:14Speaker 1: like flipping a giant like wagon wheel over and stuff
- 28:16Speaker 1: like you know, like, oh god, the work never ends.
- 28:19Speaker 5: And the way that that stuff is edited, the injuries,
- 28:22Speaker 5: the way that stuff is edited and put together is
- 28:24Speaker 5: intentionally deceiving all the time. And some of the stories
- 28:27Speaker 5: that you know behind the scenes just like like I said,
- 28:31Speaker 5: I'll let other people will watch it, you know, when
- 28:34Speaker 5: when Rex Ryan is saying let's go get a goddamn snack,
- 28:37Speaker 5: I'm here for that that, you know, just to make
- 28:39Speaker 5: fun of it, you know, but you're not getting it.
- 28:41Speaker 1: There was that one.
- 28:42Speaker 6: It was like probably ten, Yeah, that was the year
- 28:45Speaker 6: Reeves held out, So I want to I want to
- 28:47Speaker 6: say it was nine or twenty twenty ten around there.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I mean it was when they were beating the Patriots,
- 28:52Speaker 1: that it was still good.
- 28:53Speaker 6: That was the last time Hard Knocks was good. That
- 28:55Speaker 6: was the best all time Hard Knocks and the last
- 28:57Speaker 6: time that it was actually good.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Any other NFL news out there that we want to
- 29:02Speaker 2: report on.
- 29:05Speaker 5: A couple of days old, just as it relates to
- 29:08Speaker 5: the Patriots, Alvin Kamara was suspended for three games for
- 29:11Speaker 5: the Saints.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Patriots play him in a week five.
- 29:13Speaker 5: So yet another sign that Tom Brady is no longer
- 29:15Speaker 5: on the quarterback of the Patriots, because clearly that would
- 29:18Speaker 5: have been a five game suspension if Brady were still here.
- 29:22Speaker 5: So yeah, the Patriots don't catch a break in all
- 29:24Speaker 5: seriousness with that. And he's probably one of the only
- 29:27Speaker 5: offensive threats the Saints have.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Yeah, now starting to preseason focus a little bit of
- 29:33Speaker 1: you know, Texans talk and you know c. J. Stroud, Yeah,
- 29:37Speaker 1: Will Anderson, you know some interesting pieces.
- 29:39Speaker 5: Are you going to have John McClain on the show, Matt,
- 29:44Speaker 5: Are we efforting John McClain, Oh, look at him scrambling around.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Yeah, you woke him up, this diehard. He's got a
- 29:50Speaker 1: folder in there.
- 29:53Speaker 5: You gotta talk it to the mic.
- 29:54Speaker 1: John is retired.
- 29:56Speaker 5: No, I know that, but we we can't get him
- 29:58Speaker 5: to talk.
- 29:59Speaker 1: Well, he's not covering the team, and he's not who
- 30:01Speaker 1: I was going to book. He does. Actually, he's very
- 30:03Speaker 1: active on Twitter. Still.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Yeah, he's the guy. He's retired and I'll get him. No,
- 30:08Speaker 5: that's fine, that's fine. You like John mcclan he's the
- 30:12Speaker 5: best number one, he's such a nice guy.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Now, did he cover the Oilers back in the day? So,
- 30:17Speaker 1: and then he just kind of hung around till the
- 30:19Speaker 1: Texans came back. Yeah, he did.
- 30:21Speaker 5: He's been around for a long time and he is
- 30:23Speaker 5: I just don't know anybody in that league that has
- 30:26Speaker 5: a bad word to say about him. Yeah, he's a
- 30:29Speaker 5: straight sh yeah, and he's not he's no pomp.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, and even like the Texans like gave him pretty
- 30:35Speaker 2: good access, but he was still honest about you know
- 30:38Speaker 2: what he was seeing?
- 30:40Speaker 1: By the way, real quick, did you guys see the
- 30:42Speaker 1: Baltimore Orioles reporter?
- 30:45Speaker 5: Do you guys know anything more about this? There has
- 30:47Speaker 5: to be something, has to be like something, right. I
- 30:51Speaker 5: played the clip three different times because it cuts off
- 30:54Speaker 5: really quickly.
- 30:55Speaker 1: The truth is never mean, he's just stay.
- 30:56Speaker 5: In facts, right, but but it actually states it and
- 30:59Speaker 5: it's such a like a really well done like it's right,
- 31:03Speaker 5: it's professional broadcaster one oh one.
- 31:05Speaker 2: And he didn't go rogue because it was a whole
- 31:08Speaker 2: graphics package to a company.
- 31:09Speaker 5: The producer get fired too for putting all those graphics.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Up right, So it'd be like, you know, if the
- 31:14Speaker 2: Patriots have had a hard time with you know, the
- 31:17Speaker 2: Giants in super Bowls and now we're playing them for
- 31:20Speaker 2: the third super Bowl. I mean you have to say
- 31:22Speaker 2: that now you know when I lost two super Bowls
- 31:24Speaker 2: to the Giants.
- 31:24Speaker 5: Now you know what I worry about.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Oh, you have to state the facts like.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Looking at that, like if you could get suspended for that.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Like like this show just yeah, so I So that's
- 31:35Speaker 2: I'm with you, Paul. There's gotta be something that There's
- 31:38Speaker 2: got to.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Be something that we don't know about that guy.
- 31:40Speaker 6: I wonder if it was like a pattern and this
- 31:43Speaker 6: like maybe he's been negative on the air before and
- 31:47Speaker 6: this was sort of just the final And I'm not
- 31:49Speaker 6: I'm not saying that he should have been suspended for
- 31:51Speaker 6: what he said.
- 31:51Speaker 5: I'm definitely not. But what if they went to him
- 31:54Speaker 5: beforehand and they said, hey, listen, we know we never
- 31:57Speaker 5: went in tampa'ss. What's you know let's get past that.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Let's ignore that. And then he said, well, no, I'm
- 32:03Speaker 5: not going to ignore it. I gonna put a whole
- 32:04Speaker 5: package together about it, you know, to lead into the
- 32:06Speaker 5: broadcast graphics.
- 32:08Speaker 1: And he directly defied in order. Then you know, then.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Okay, I think the order itself is foolish. Correct, but
- 32:13Speaker 2: he's still defied.
- 32:14Speaker 1: The team would still be looking foolish. But they should
- 32:18Speaker 1: come out with a statement if that, if there's something
- 32:19Speaker 1: more to it, because they look ridiculous right now.
- 32:22Speaker 5: Right anytime something looks so blatantly obvious one sided, I
- 32:26Speaker 5: always think of what don't we know?
- 32:28Speaker 2: Yeah, because like one of your shows this morning, Paul here,
- 32:31Speaker 2: we're like, you know, we're gonna find out he's got
- 32:33Speaker 2: like dead bodies on you know.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Fred Fred Tivins guy, Because what if it was like that,
- 32:40Speaker 5: he's like up on murder?
- 32:41Speaker 1: Can that one be Evans show from now on the touch?
- 32:44Speaker 1: And that's right, you are, I guess.
- 32:47Speaker 7: Yeah, it sounds like they just have sensitive to guess
- 32:51Speaker 7: a guy before the home opener in twenty twenty one two.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's really ridiculous, Like just they they couldn't
- 32:57Speaker 5: win in Tampa and all of a sudden they've won
- 33:00Speaker 5: Tampa this year.
- 33:00Speaker 1: Now it is that guy like so C is that
- 33:02Speaker 1: what he would be the equivalent of like the t.
- 33:06Speaker 5: For the Red Sox, but he's the he's employed podcaster.
- 33:10Speaker 6: I don't think it's I think it's a nesting situation
- 33:12Speaker 6: where it's owned by the team, but it's not. It's not.
- 33:15Speaker 2: I see, yeah, D'Angelo owns.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Angelo subs dropped the d just Angelo, correct, Peter, I
- 33:27Speaker 1: thought there was a Turkey subcoming on drop slam on
- 33:29Speaker 1: the drop the the ATM machine.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a that's a weird situation.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, just that occurred to me, and it was I.
- 33:40Speaker 5: Mean everybody again like Thursday night, if I say, Bailey's
- 33:43Speaker 5: appy's really struggled the last few days of camp, but
- 33:45Speaker 5: my my key card going to work.
- 33:46Speaker 1: The next day.
- 33:48Speaker 2: I mean, everyone's supporting him and killing the team. So
- 33:50Speaker 2: at some point you would think that if there is
- 33:52Speaker 2: something else that the team might say, you know, this
- 33:55Speaker 2: isn't why.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Well, if it was here, they would get Bob hold
- 33:58Speaker 1: right a scathing So in.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Eight five five past five hundred is the a sticket houtline.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Don't know how many people are gonna be calling because
- 34:08Speaker 2: we're doing this early show.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And tried to get word out this morning on the X.
- 34:12Speaker 2: But yeah, on the X, that's the new signal.
- 34:16Speaker 1: Right, what about threads, mayn't I haven't open threads since
- 34:20Speaker 1: I signed up for an account. Yeah, I haven't even
- 34:23Speaker 1: threaded once. Yeah. I don't know.
- 34:25Speaker 2: How many social platforms do you want to be?
- 34:27Speaker 1: I can't even keep track of one. And I'm like, yeah, yeah.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I don't like it.
- 34:33Speaker 6: I'm out on threads.
- 34:34Speaker 5: This is the matter of context.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think not to rehash threads, but
- 34:38Speaker 1: like I use Twitter for work to try to access
- 34:41Speaker 1: information and what people are saying about a specific topic
- 34:44Speaker 1: and a timely manner. That's my number one use for Twitter.
- 34:46Speaker 1: And what does threads do. Threads is just you know,
- 34:48Speaker 1: a random mishmash of right people being thrown at you, like, hey,
- 34:51Speaker 1: you might be interested in this.
- 34:52Speaker 6: I'm like, okay, I'm not interested now.
- 34:55Speaker 1: I'm here for the info, need the info. Yeah, it's
- 34:58Speaker 1: not the all twenty two. So all right, he's.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Web radio at patriots dot com. People emailing, so continue
- 35:06Speaker 2: to do so we'll get to your emails.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Talk to us.
- 35:08Speaker 2: Okay, I was raining yesterday today it's supposed to stop
- 35:13Speaker 2: around practice time.
- 35:15Speaker 1: I think it's I mean, we're hopeful here a family
- 35:17Speaker 1: day that.
- 35:19Speaker 2: When we walked in the studio, but the family days indoors.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Right, yeah, it's in the optim lounge. But yeah, yeah, so,
- 35:24Speaker 1: but you.
- 35:24Speaker 5: Want to be on the field, you want to practice.
- 35:26Speaker 5: You know, Mike's kids, they want to be.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Kids. They got a Brady jersey on. I'm waiting for
- 35:31Speaker 1: Paul to be like, you know, your dad hates.
- 35:32Speaker 6: Brady Campbell's soup.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Just put that in my head.
- 35:38Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, his kids are also a cornerback, Tyson Campbell.
- 35:43Speaker 6: Oh there you go. Good cornerback too.
- 35:46Speaker 1: I know. Unfortunately only Campbell's on the back though, so
- 35:48Speaker 1: doesn't do Tyson any good, you know.
- 35:50Speaker 2: All right, let's uh, let's get to some of these
- 35:52Speaker 2: emails again. You can also call eight five to five
- 35:55Speaker 2: paths five hundred on the ACE ticket hot line. We'll
- 35:59Speaker 2: go to who who is this Josh writing in? Uh,
- 36:03Speaker 2: He's from Columbus, Ohio. Understanding there might be a number
- 36:07Speaker 2: of factors which make this a silly idea.
- 36:09Speaker 1: But what do you think.
- 36:09Speaker 2: About Taekwon moving to the X to be the full
- 36:12Speaker 2: time backup for Devonte Parker? Evan talking about Devonte Parker
- 36:16Speaker 2: being someone who has to be thrown to a spot
- 36:19Speaker 2: so he can climb a ladder to beat the defender
- 36:22Speaker 2: is what got me thinking Taekwon is someone who could
- 36:25Speaker 2: be led on a pass and in theory being six
- 36:27Speaker 2: Tuish could also go up and get the ball. Wondering
- 36:30Speaker 2: if this removes a couple of his issues with route
- 36:32Speaker 2: running as well. Speaking out of my butt here, but
- 36:35Speaker 2: it feels like Davante only runs a vertical or a slant.
- 36:39Speaker 1: That's that's kind of true. I mean, I don't. I
- 36:42Speaker 1: just think generally they want everybody to kind of do
- 36:44Speaker 1: a little bit of everything. Even if Parker is going
- 36:46Speaker 1: to be at the ax and that's going to be
- 36:47Speaker 1: his main kind of role, It's also just be disappointing
- 36:51Speaker 1: to have to kind of subjugate Taekwon Thorntonto just backing
- 36:55Speaker 1: up Devonte Parker at.
- 36:56Speaker 5: The ex He wants you, guys said, he's good as fifty,
- 37:00Speaker 5: wants them to replace part I'll replace the X can't
- 37:03Speaker 5: he said, back them up up? Oh, I thought he
- 37:05Speaker 5: said to replace them.
- 37:06Speaker 1: He said back them up. Oh, I'm not interested in
- 37:08Speaker 1: him being a backup.
- 37:09Speaker 5: I mean, that's kind of what he is, right, that's
- 37:11Speaker 5: what's that's where we are right now.
- 37:12Speaker 6: I'm not a fan of Taekwon at the X, yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 6: because as an X receiver, you play on the line
- 37:17Speaker 6: of scrimmage, so you can see a ton of press
- 37:19Speaker 6: coverage and you're just gonna bump and run, bump and run,
- 37:21Speaker 6: bump and run, and that's the opposite of what I
- 37:24Speaker 6: want Taekwon to do. When you play him at the Z,
- 37:26Speaker 6: you can move him around the formation, you can motion him,
- 37:29Speaker 6: you can play him in the slot a little bit,
- 37:30Speaker 6: and that gets him away from some of that contact
- 37:32Speaker 6: and lets him just run.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Question. Ye, have we seen a lot of Taekwon because
- 37:37Speaker 1: there's been a lot of motion in camp. I don't
- 37:39Speaker 1: recall a lot of Taekwon in motion, though I remember
- 37:41Speaker 1: Pop Douglas a lot.
- 37:43Speaker 6: Yeah, not not a ton, which I hope is maybe
- 37:46Speaker 6: just because he hasn't been out there as much as
- 37:48Speaker 6: some of the other guys, and hopefully they get to
- 37:50Speaker 6: that that point. But my vision for Taekwon has always
- 37:53Speaker 6: been to use him like O'Brien. He's Jamison Williams at
- 37:56Speaker 6: Alabama and that was a little bit on the outside
- 37:59Speaker 6: for but I think Jamison Williams is a better releaser
- 38:03Speaker 6: and finisher through contact than Taekwon is. Mostly the snaps
- 38:07Speaker 6: in the slot Z. Those are the spots where you
- 38:10Speaker 6: can get him off the line of scrimmage and basically
- 38:13Speaker 6: just turn it into a track meet, which is what
- 38:15Speaker 6: you want with a guy like that.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Okay, there you go, Yeah makes sense.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Yeah, let's see Michael is in Mcallisterville, Pennsylvania. Recently read
- 38:27Speaker 2: an article by CBS Sports which listed the top candidate
- 38:30Speaker 2: from each NFL team's active roster to reach the Hall
- 38:33Speaker 2: of Fame, and he's talking about the Canton one. The
- 38:36Speaker 2: writer listed Matthew Slater for the Patriots. I cannot disagree
- 38:40Speaker 2: with the selection, but this is a poor commentary on
- 38:43Speaker 2: the current active roster. That special teams player is our
- 38:46Speaker 2: best shot to reach Canton. Is there another player you
- 38:49Speaker 2: can see reaching this level? I think I was thinking
- 38:51Speaker 2: Matt Judhon if he puts together a few more Pro
- 38:54Speaker 2: Bowl caliber seasons. Love the show, love the entire cast,
- 38:57Speaker 2: but the addition of Evan was a great move. He's
- 39:00Speaker 2: my pick for a future Patriots unfiltered Hall of Fame inductee.
- 39:04Speaker 1: Oh are you in that?
- 39:06Speaker 5: Yeah? Andy and I they wave they waive them.
- 39:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Bill Belichick has said that Slater. He
- 39:14Speaker 2: thinks Slater is one of the greatest special teamers ever
- 39:17Speaker 2: should be in.
- 39:17Speaker 1: The quantify that though, like it's hard to be, like,
- 39:20Speaker 1: you know what.
- 39:21Speaker 5: Let's move beyond. Let's let's try to answer his question,
- 39:23Speaker 5: because I think it's a good question, and I agree
- 39:25Speaker 5: with his premise.
- 39:26Speaker 1: Judon is the only one I would think of that
- 39:28Speaker 1: could maybe and I think he's too old and probably I.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Think that he also would need to do it in
- 39:34Speaker 2: some big games.
- 39:35Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you know, like in the playoffs. I mean,
- 39:37Speaker 5: if you're great, you're great. But I don't look at
- 39:39Speaker 5: him as a Hall of Fame type player. He's a
- 39:42Speaker 5: really good player. He's a good player in today's game.
- 39:44Speaker 5: I mean, you know, Pro Bowl caliber player. I think
- 39:47Speaker 5: he's got four Pro Bowls in a row with Baltimore
- 39:49Speaker 5: and too.
- 39:50Speaker 2: But I always say this, if he has like some
- 39:51Speaker 2: key sacks and some playoff games, that that helps you.
- 39:54Speaker 5: Yeah, definitely, when you do it in the big stage,
- 39:56Speaker 5: it enhances your resume.
- 39:58Speaker 1: I mean, I think they have one guy in top
- 40:00Speaker 1: one hundred NFL players was chewed on, right, They had
- 40:03Speaker 1: nobody over ninety and Madden. I mean, this is this
- 40:05Speaker 1: is where you're at. Any kind of rating it come
- 40:07Speaker 1: up with, it's it's not really pretty at this point.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Until some of these guys, it.
- 40:10Speaker 5: Would be a projection. It would be like one of
- 40:12Speaker 5: the younger guys, what are you looking at?
- 40:14Speaker 6: Like Pop Douglas.
- 40:15Speaker 1: Let's not put him in the Hall of Fame just yet,
- 40:17Speaker 1: have it? I don't know, Like I mean, I'm thinking
- 40:22Speaker 1: about Rimandre. I don't want to make that argument because
- 40:24Speaker 1: I don't know how hard it's going to or how
- 40:26Speaker 1: easy it'll be for running backs to really get in
- 40:28Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame anymore. With how running backs are
- 40:30Speaker 1: used anymore, Like, there's not going to be a well
- 40:32Speaker 1: when you think about it, in your productive running back.
- 40:34Speaker 2: I mean his his average per game rushing, you know,
- 40:38Speaker 2: doesn't it have to be a little higher than what
- 40:39Speaker 2: his is?
- 40:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and you have to do it for
- 40:41Speaker 1: a long time.
- 40:42Speaker 5: We he would have to sort of evolve into the
- 40:46Speaker 5: man as opposed to a part of the committee. Now,
- 40:50Speaker 5: the last half of last year he was the man, right, Yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 5: and his production went down as the season went on.
- 40:56Speaker 5: But if he were to have five seasons where he
- 40:59Speaker 5: was the guy and all of a sudden, instead of
- 41:01Speaker 5: rushing for a thousand yards, he's rushing to fifteen hundred
- 41:03Speaker 5: and averaging over five yards to carry. That's definitely now.
- 41:07Speaker 2: The guy that Gonzales I was just gonna say, you
- 41:10Speaker 2: took the words out of my mouth. You know, you
- 41:12Speaker 2: hope that that's he's kind of career he has. But
- 41:15Speaker 2: you know, how hard is it for a corner back?
- 41:17Speaker 1: Yeah, to get in?
- 41:18Speaker 5: I thought Douglas was.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Yeah, he's practiced eleven times. Like there's no question of
- 41:23Speaker 1: the course. You guys are right, But I mean, just
- 41:25Speaker 1: as far as.
- 41:26Speaker 2: I mean house, you have to be as a corner get.
- 41:29Speaker 1: Elite athletic talent. He's making some balls.
- 41:32Speaker 5: Law, Derell Reeves right, Charles Woods, like, he's like guys
- 41:35Speaker 5: that have gone in lately.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Yeah, as a patriot, you have to be all time
- 41:39Speaker 6: great to get into the Hall of Fame. If he
- 41:41Speaker 6: was like a Steeler, then maybe be a little bit
- 41:44Speaker 6: easier for him. So that that's true, that's the biggest
- 41:49Speaker 6: It's like I'm with Ty Law just had to you know,
- 41:52Speaker 6: be amazing and have a pick six in the Super
- 41:55Speaker 6: Bowl to sniff the Hall of Fames, Right, I don't
- 41:59Speaker 6: like to me.
- 41:59Speaker 5: I they made Andre tip it way for how many years?
- 42:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, yeah, I don't know, you're I'm right
- 42:05Speaker 1: with you. I mean I know it's everybody against us.
- 42:08Speaker 1: You know, it's it's ridiculous to say a rookie. But
- 42:10Speaker 1: that's that's where the Patriots are. That's what Tom Brady
- 42:13Speaker 1: and right.
- 42:13Speaker 5: I think the point of that wasn't everybody against us?
- 42:15Speaker 5: So was everybody for Pittsburgh. That's the beauty of that.
- 42:20Speaker 6: The whole Steelers Teamittsburgh, Dallas. Joey Porter Junior can't cover
- 42:24Speaker 6: anybody in camp, but he's already going into the Hall
- 42:26Speaker 6: of Fame from when I heard so, I have a
- 42:30Speaker 6: real issue with Hall of Fame voters if you can't
- 42:32Speaker 6: tell real issue.
- 42:33Speaker 1: I've heard your rad Tom, I'm the Steelers seventies teams.
- 42:36Speaker 5: But it just didn't I think there are a lot
- 42:37Speaker 5: of especially lately when you you've sort of been covering
- 42:41Speaker 5: the league for a while and you're more familiar with
- 42:43Speaker 5: some of the players. I think there's a lot of
- 42:45Speaker 5: good players that have been inducted into the Hall of
- 42:47Speaker 5: Fame lately. Not great, I would hope, so no, no, no,
- 42:51Speaker 5: but not great that's my point. I don't think you
- 42:53Speaker 5: should have to be how many times we talked about it.
- 42:56Speaker 5: I know Fred and I are locked up on this.
- 42:59Speaker 5: We're for a small only the select view and you
- 43:02Speaker 5: know them when you see them, they're just absolutely dominant, transcendent.
- 43:05Speaker 5: Put Tom Brady, I don't have to talk about this.
- 43:09Speaker 5: He's in the Hall of Fame. There's no argument to
- 43:11Speaker 5: be made. I think there were a lot of guys.
- 43:14Speaker 5: How do you feel there were good arguments to be made,
- 43:16Speaker 5: and some of them made it, some of them didn't.
- 43:18Speaker 6: How do you feel about Dion Sanders' idea of having
- 43:21Speaker 6: like the the the Gentleman's club upstairs, you know, the
- 43:26Speaker 6: the real Hall of Famers's club.
- 43:28Speaker 5: Yeah, you know he's sort of advocated for a small
- 43:31Speaker 5: hall break like a strip club.
- 43:33Speaker 6: No, no, it's for like the real Hall of Fame.
- 43:35Speaker 5: There's no touching in the champagne room, no matter what
- 43:37Speaker 5: they tell you.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah, a smaller hall upstairs, like yeah, I don't remember
- 43:41Speaker 2: what the word he was obvious, wasn't that?
- 43:44Speaker 6: But they're they're gonna plus it up for Yeah. I
- 43:48Speaker 6: am not for that, Dion Sanders, Tom Brady. You know,
- 43:51Speaker 6: the greats and the greats are in this like upper incheloge.
- 43:54Speaker 2: I think I think there's an opportunity for whether it's
- 43:57Speaker 2: a PFF or some outlet or Sports Illustrated to say, Okay,
- 44:02Speaker 2: we're redoing and we're creating our own Hall of Fame
- 44:05Speaker 2: and these are truly just the greats, you know, And
- 44:08Speaker 2: they come up with that list and I'm sure it
- 44:10Speaker 2: will get a billion clicks.
- 44:12Speaker 6: Well that was what like the NFL, like with Belichick
- 44:17Speaker 6: and like the NFL one hundred thing they did a
- 44:19Speaker 6: couple of years ago that was supposed to be the
- 44:21Speaker 6: one hundred greatest players in NFL history and no period,
- 44:25Speaker 6: you know, we're not going to have any of these
- 44:27Speaker 6: like hall of very good guys in this one hundred list.
- 44:30Speaker 1: I prefer the PFF.
- 44:31Speaker 2: They went and they all the NFL has been around
- 44:33Speaker 2: for a hundred years now, right, they celebrated that.
- 44:36Speaker 1: A few years ago.
- 44:38Speaker 2: So so you create this, you create this Hall of
- 44:40Speaker 2: one hundred, right, and you're in there, but somebody.
- 44:45Speaker 1: T shirts went in one out. Is that we're saying, yeah, somebody.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Can take your place, and you could get booted out
- 44:50Speaker 2: because it can only always be one hundred.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Thunderdome Hall of fame. I like it. I like it. Relegation.
- 44:57Speaker 1: What have you done lately? Yeah, some of that with
- 45:01Speaker 1: with some of the number of retirements, you know, with
- 45:04Speaker 1: some of the teams, like let's let's get stuff back
- 45:05Speaker 1: into circulation. Like you're never gonna stay retired until nobody
- 45:08Speaker 1: knows who you are and then it's got to come back. Yeah.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Uh, Tim our friend from Duncan, I'm being I'm becoming
- 45:15Speaker 2: deeply concerned about the offensive line. I think if fully healthy,
- 45:19Speaker 2: they'll be fine. But that's the question. When will they
- 45:22Speaker 2: have the full starting offensive line playing together? In your opinion,
- 45:25Speaker 2: how long will the starting lineup of Trent Brown, Cole Strange,
- 45:28Speaker 2: David Andrews, Michael when you and Connor McDermott need to
- 45:31Speaker 2: play together to be a cohesive unit.
- 45:34Speaker 1: I have no idea on them when you, I don't.
- 45:35Speaker 1: No one's reported anything. No one actually even said what
- 45:38Speaker 1: the actual injury was. I mean, I think we know
- 45:39Speaker 1: it was ye surgery, Like I think that is that
- 45:43Speaker 1: a wide range of potential things that it could have been.
- 45:45Speaker 1: I don't know, but I have no idea on him.
- 45:48Speaker 1: There's no programma.
- 45:49Speaker 5: I'm expecting him to be ready for the season. Yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 5: I am haven't been told anything, and I just feel
- 45:55Speaker 5: like it was kind of.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Planned. Yeah, I mean I kind of agree that, you know,
- 46:02Speaker 1: if that is the group, that they'll be okay, Like
- 46:04Speaker 1: even if it's McDermot, they're not going to be great.
- 46:05Speaker 5: I think it's concern in general. I think the offensive
- 46:08Speaker 5: line is a concern because I actually and this is
- 46:11Speaker 5: why I keep giving you credit for the seven because
- 46:13Speaker 5: I never really think of it in that way.
- 46:15Speaker 1: But like, I.
- 46:16Speaker 5: Think it's a tough thing to hamstring your offensive coordinator
- 46:20Speaker 5: if you don't have faith in your protection. You know,
- 46:23Speaker 5: when you have to constantly scheme around stuff. And I
- 46:25Speaker 5: think that there's a chance that that five would have
- 46:28Speaker 5: to be schemed around.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean you have to tread lightly. And speaking

- 52:15Speaker 1: And now great moments in history. I mean, I think
- 52:20Speaker 1: it's a balancing act. And I mean I think building
- 52:22Speaker 1: a team, you don't want to get too young. You
- 52:24Speaker 1: want to still have some veteran presence.
- 52:26Speaker 5: But uh, but excuse do you hear that?
- 52:29Speaker 8: You know?
- 52:30Speaker 5: I also don't think you can just turn it all
- 52:32Speaker 5: over to We haven't even eaten yet, Fred, Wow, what

- 52:54Speaker 5: But I am coming to get you, Yeah, Todd, I.
- 52:57Speaker 1: Would just say, though, I think generally, you know, Paul
- 52:59Speaker 1: and I are the same. Just like this team has
- 53:01Speaker 1: to get younger, They gotta get younger. And so that
- 53:04Speaker 1: guy's dead now, everybody, so covering blood neutralizes the word.
- 53:09Speaker 1: We use that fast.
- 53:12Speaker 5: I've ever seen you dispose of my body. That was impressive.
- 53:15Speaker 5: That's another great moment.
- 53:20Speaker 2: All right, welcome back to Patriots Unfiltered. It's Deuce, it's Evan, Paul, myself,
- 53:24Speaker 2: Matt and the booth. We're here until noon today, a

- 53:35Speaker 2: will be on Thursday, four thirty to six thirty. There
- 53:38Speaker 2: won't be a regular Patriots Unfiltered on Thursday, but there
- 53:41Speaker 2: will be the pre and postgame show with Hardy. Catch
- 53:45Speaker 2: twenty two is tomorrowlock two o'clock two pm. So a

- 53:53Speaker 1: Want to be?
- 53:54Speaker 6: All right?
- 53:54Speaker 2: Ace ticket outline eight five to five, Pats five hundred,
- 53:57Speaker 2: starting to heat up. Let's go to the phones. Zeke's
- 54:00Speaker 2: in Philly. What's up, Zeke?
- 54:02Speaker 6: Are you signing with the Patriots?
- 54:05Speaker 5: Hey?
- 54:05Speaker 1: How's it going? Fellas?
- 54:06Speaker 13: So playing the textans two days from now?
- 54:09Speaker 14: What are your predictions for rookie snap?
- 54:11Speaker 1: Oh that's a good question. I'm zero from Mardy Mappo.
- 54:15Speaker 1: Let's just start with the easy one red jersey. Yeah,
- 54:17Speaker 1: not gonna play it.
- 54:18Speaker 5: I would say you'd see some key on white, Yeah,
- 54:21Speaker 5: probably not much, if any.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Gonzales. I think a lot of has been running with
- 54:26Speaker 1: the quote unquote top top group, Take Careful Camp.
- 54:31Speaker 5: I was able to some of those guys.
- 54:33Speaker 6: Day three guys will play.
- 54:34Speaker 5: You'll see the Day three guys the offensive lineman. I
- 54:37Speaker 5: think you'll see Andrews and Mafy and Booty and your guy.
- 54:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 54:42Speaker 5: And I think you'll see Booty in Douglas.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:44Speaker 1: It's interesting with Mafi though, because he's kind of important now,
- 54:46Speaker 1: but he does need to like to get his feet
- 54:48Speaker 1: wet by someone's gotta play. I know, I know they've got.
- 54:51Speaker 6: My eye on Mafi on Thursday night because it's hard
- 54:55Speaker 6: to to evaluate the offensive lineman and team drills without
- 54:58Speaker 6: being able to go back and watch because it happens
- 55:01Speaker 6: so quickly. So Who's back of the week. All twenty
- 55:03Speaker 6: two is back, and we will be able to watch Mafi.
- 55:06Speaker 6: If Mafi is good at guard and when on when
- 55:10Speaker 6: who comes back?
- 55:11Speaker 8: On?
- 55:12Speaker 6: When at tackle? Mafi at guard and maybe you don't
- 55:15Speaker 6: have to play. Connor McDermot and Riley reeve like that.
- 55:18Speaker 6: That might be your best five. If Mafy can hold.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Up, that's good stuff. I'd like to see something out
- 55:23Speaker 1: of the other two, So and and and Jake Andrews
- 55:26Speaker 1: haven't seen a lot out of them. Wasn't really impressed yesterday,
- 55:28Speaker 1: So it's.
- 55:29Speaker 6: Been a rough one on one training camp for City.
- 55:31Speaker 6: So like, I hate to single out somebody, but he's
- 55:33Speaker 6: learning a new position and it shows.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he looks like a pig in an urban set.
- 55:38Speaker 5: But I think you will see uh, you know, like
- 55:40Speaker 5: like the boys said the day three guys, I think
- 55:42Speaker 5: you'll see them get a lot of snaps.
- 55:44Speaker 2: Yeah, Zeke, anyone in particular you're looking for.
- 55:49Speaker 14: It would be great to see Bolden get a couple snaps.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Oh, he's gonna play a lot. He'll play. Yeah.
- 55:53Speaker 6: I want to see him on kickoffs, yeah, like returning kickoffs.
- 55:57Speaker 1: I mean, I think of everybody we talk about Jonathan Jones,
- 56:00Speaker 1: Jack Jones kind of a little bit uncertainty. He's he's
- 56:03Speaker 1: a guy I think that still has that opportunity next
- 56:06Speaker 1: couple of weeks. He's got to do it against other teams.
- 56:07Speaker 1: But he's got good size, he runs well. Thanks.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Speaking of kickoffs, is our first chance to see the
- 56:12Speaker 2: new rule, to see how that plays out on kickoffs
- 56:16Speaker 2: with the fair catch.
- 56:17Speaker 1: M Yeah, they make like something we've been noticing. They
- 56:20Speaker 1: make like some kind of signal it seems like like
- 56:21Speaker 1: when they're gonna which when they're gonna tweet something, they
- 56:23Speaker 1: just put the the X symbol. Check Twitter.
- 56:27Speaker 2: Mike's in Sarasota, Florida.
- 56:28Speaker 13: What's up, Mike, gentlemen, Good morning and Mike. Good to
- 56:32Speaker 13: talk to you, guys. Thanks for taking my call. Sure,
- 56:34Speaker 13: first is definitely in agreement with the offensive line. I
- 56:38Speaker 13: think that is to me a concerning thing. I think
- 56:42Speaker 13: so much is going to hinge upon that. But the
- 56:45Speaker 13: reason I'm calling is, what is your guys take on
- 56:49Speaker 13: why have they Why did Bill get away from the
- 56:51Speaker 13: full back because it seems like we had such a
- 56:53Speaker 13: good power running game when we had the fullback position
- 56:57Speaker 13: going more so with Devlin Yaka maybe not so much,
- 57:02Speaker 13: but why why did he get away from that?
- 57:06Speaker 2: I think, you know, unless you have a fullback who
- 57:09Speaker 2: truly is versatile, it's you're only going to use them
- 57:13Speaker 2: like a few times a game.
- 57:14Speaker 5: I think that they wanted to be less predictable offense. Yeah,
- 57:17Speaker 5: and I'm not telling you they're right, wrong, or indifferent,
- 57:19Speaker 5: but this is the way it was explained to me
- 57:21Speaker 5: a couple of years ago. Is when you know, when
- 57:23Speaker 5: Yakob Johnson was on the field, they were predominantly going
- 57:26Speaker 5: to be running back.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Like I said, if he could actually, you know, go
- 57:28Speaker 2: out and catch passes and be good at that, then
- 57:31Speaker 2: that's a different Yeah.
- 57:32Speaker 5: I would take like, you know, duh, I would take
- 57:35Speaker 5: a guy that has the varied skill set like us
- 57:38Speaker 5: check if you wanted to incorporate a fullback. I'm not
- 57:40Speaker 5: really interested in a battering Ram fullback in today's day
- 57:44Speaker 5: and age.
- 57:44Speaker 1: They don't really seem interested in trying to find that
- 57:46Speaker 1: guy over the last couple of years. I mean, it's
- 57:47Speaker 1: just been two years since it like yaka, well, no,
- 57:51Speaker 1: you're right, I mean, Folkser is in that mold a
- 57:54Speaker 1: little bit.
- 57:54Speaker 5: But like I would argue, it's like the middle of
- 57:57Speaker 5: the summer sign ridiculously anecdotal. Okay, I have no research
- 58:01Speaker 5: being done off the top of my head here, but
- 58:03Speaker 5: like I just look around the league and what are
- 58:05Speaker 5: the teams that you would say are really good that
- 58:07Speaker 5: incorporate a fullback on any kind of a regular basis,
- 58:10Speaker 5: And I would say there probably aren't very many. San
- 58:13Speaker 5: Francisco is one of them. I just explained that he's
- 58:16Speaker 5: to me, not really a battering Ram fullback, but so
- 58:21Speaker 5: a lot of people say, well, look what Josh Jacobs
- 58:22Speaker 5: did last year with the Raiders. He had a phenomenal year.
- 58:25Speaker 5: He was probably the best back in football last year.
- 58:28Speaker 5: They got Yakub Johnson to run in front of him.
- 58:31Speaker 5: How'd they do? How'd that work out for him? Like
- 58:34Speaker 5: I think, you can rack up a lot of yards,
- 58:35Speaker 5: would be a great power running football team. Doesn't necessarily
- 58:39Speaker 5: translate to being a really good football team, you know
- 58:41Speaker 5: what I mean? And again ridiculously anecdotal. There's probably a
- 58:47Speaker 5: number of teams that you guys could come up with
- 58:49Speaker 5: that you know, played really well using a lot of
- 58:52Speaker 5: two back sets. I think they wanted to get away
- 58:54Speaker 5: from being predictable, and that's why they did it. I'm
- 58:56Speaker 5: not telling you they're right for doing it, but I
- 58:58Speaker 5: think that was the reason.
- 58:59Speaker 6: I'm with the I missed the full back. I think
- 59:02Speaker 6: that there's a lot of schematic advantages to having a
- 59:04Speaker 6: full back. Full Backs can go both ways right, they
- 59:06Speaker 6: can go left or right. When you have a tight
- 59:08Speaker 6: end lined up in line, he's on his side of
- 59:10Speaker 6: the formation and you can slide them across. But it's
- 59:13Speaker 6: not the same action. And I think the biggest thing
- 59:16Speaker 6: is is that with the full back. You can build
- 59:19Speaker 6: sides right that you can build three or four man
- 59:20Speaker 6: surfaces at any given time because he can go in
- 59:23Speaker 6: both directions. And then you also have the poll that
- 59:27Speaker 6: it causes on play action, which I think is really
- 59:29Speaker 6: where they made their money under McDaniels. Was you know
- 59:32Speaker 6: lead ISO. Oh no, it's not lead ISO, and now
- 59:35Speaker 6: it's play action and those linebackers have to scream up
- 59:38Speaker 6: to take on the full back, and now we're hitting
- 59:40Speaker 6: the crossers and things in the seams behind the linebackers.
- 59:44Speaker 6: I thought that that was one of their bread and butters,
- 59:47Speaker 6: like that was an easy offense for them to run.
- 59:50Speaker 6: I agree with Paul that maybe it's antiquated, you know,
- 59:53Speaker 6: maybe the numbers don't back up that it's a high
- 59:56Speaker 6: flying offense anymore. But I look at Kyle Shanahan, who
- 1:00:01Speaker 6: I think is the best offensive mine in football, and
- 1:00:03Speaker 6: he loves full backs. He said as long as he
- 1:00:06Speaker 6: was the head coach of the forty nine ers, they
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: would have a full back, whether it was us check
- 1:00:09Speaker 6: or was somebody else. And McDaniels loves full backs. There's
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: a lot of really good, smart offensive minds that love
- 1:00:16Speaker 6: full backs. So I think it still has a role,
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: and I don't think it's totally gone. I think that
- 1:00:21Speaker 6: they're gonna it's definitely not totally experiment a little bit
- 1:00:24Speaker 6: with it.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: I just would like to see if you're gonna do it,
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: if you're gonna have two backs in the field, I
- 1:00:28Speaker 5: need that guy. I need you to be able to
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: throw as often as you do run. And San Francisco
- 1:00:33Speaker 5: has the ability to do that because they have kind
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: of a unicorn play in the position.
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: Yeah, well, now that you know, not to go to
- 1:00:39Speaker 6: down the rabbit hole with Anthony Ferkser, but he played
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: us Check's role at Harvard when when Uscheck went to
- 1:00:47Speaker 6: the NFL, and they are similar body type, similar type
- 1:00:51Speaker 6: of players, and first or can catch the ball a
- 1:00:53Speaker 6: little bit.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: He's not a dynamic went to Harvard too, all right,
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: I just want yeah, figured.
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: He's not a dynamic pass sketcher by any means, but
- 1:01:01Speaker 6: he's not Yakub Johnson either, Right, he does bring a
- 1:01:04Speaker 6: little bit of juice in that role.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: You would have some of that flexibility.
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I just think it's kind of right now. It
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: seems to me like it's a goal line package only
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: in their offense.
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: Yeah, Mike, let's say no, Phil and Vermont just booked
- 1:01:20Speaker 2: my first ever trip to Vegas to go see the game.
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: You know any Patriot fan friendly spots I should check
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: out while I'm there, bars, restaurants, whatever, or perhaps any
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: events the organization may be hosting. Well, you should start
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: with the Patriots fan Club Registry on Patriots dot com.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Type in Las Vegas and see what fan clubs are
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: there and where they meet on Sunday. That's a good
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: place to start. Then there's Barry in Siong's Patriots Tailgate
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: group on Facebook. They always organize a lot of road trips,
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: and I'm sure they're gonna do something for Vegas. I
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: know Barry's a big Vegas guy.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Is he big Germany guy? Are they doing Germany? I
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Well, Patriots will have stuff going on in Germany, so
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: I'll let you know what we get closer to that.
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: But I know Barry loves Vegas. He's there a lot
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: with his wife, so I'm sure there'll be something going
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: on in Vegas. Go to the Patriots Tailgate group on
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: Facebook and check that out, or the fan club registry
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: on Patriots dot com.
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: So there you go.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Let's see who is this James writes in Where's James?
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: Trump doesn't say Eric wouldn't like that. I apologize, I've
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: already covered this. I expect that everyone was excited to
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: hear in Jack Jones's press conference that he apparently listens
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: to the show.
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: What didn't hear that?
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: I didn't hear that this is going to be a
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: sarcastic comment.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: I was wondering how Fred felt about his comment that
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: he wanted Fred to say it to his case. In
- 1:02:49Speaker 2: regards to Fred's comments last week.
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: What oh you, I think you made a Jack Jones joke.
- 1:02:54Speaker 6: So I guess he's.
- 1:02:55Speaker 5: Say it to your face, say it to his face.
- 1:02:58Speaker 5: I guess Jack. Jack Jones was I thought excellent in
- 1:03:02Speaker 5: his very brief, very scripted. Yeah, he did a good
- 1:03:06Speaker 5: job of it. He didn't have anything he wasn't He
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: did a good job. Yeah, Jack Jones.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Congratulations to Evan on his engagement. I know it was
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: mentioned last week that they have not set a date,
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: but I wanted to confirm that we can expect the
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: all too fifty tape breakdown after the wedding. That's a
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: big that's the best wedding.
- 1:03:26Speaker 6: Maybe like take the five and the O out of
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: it and.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Is he planning and posting it on patriot dot com
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: or will it be on the same channel where Alex
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: is breaking down the one on one film of the Dogwalks.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: I don't know. Yeah, I know he just James put
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: a lot of effort into this email. But stick to
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: your day job.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: Wow, you're so mean.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Why are you so mean?
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: He's trying to put fun.
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: It really wasn't that funny.
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: No, I agree with Fred, but it's kind of mean.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I'm trying to say him from wasting his time down
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: the field, down the road.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Okay?
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: And I'd like to hear Evan's thoughts on Booty after
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: a few consistently good practices. Does he think he makes
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: the fifty three man roster on this trajectory as the
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: fifth or sixth wide receiver? Does he play meaningful time
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: this season on this trajectory?
- 1:04:21Speaker 6: Evan thought, yeah, No, I think Deus and I are
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: on the same page with Booty, I'm not. I don't
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: see anything about his game like with with with Pop Douglas.
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: His movement skills and his quickness are are apparent, like
- 1:04:36Speaker 6: they pop off no pun intended on the field, like
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: you can see it. It's tangible. With Booty, he's fine.
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: I just don't see anything particularly stand out or special
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: about his game now. I will say his hands are
- 1:04:49Speaker 6: a lot better than I thought that they were going
- 1:04:51Speaker 6: to be. He struggled with drops in college. Uh, he's
- 1:04:55Speaker 6: He's had some real snags, like not just the one
- 1:04:57Speaker 6: handed catch, but caught some passes in the back the
- 1:05:00Speaker 6: end zone that had some sunny You.
- 1:05:02Speaker 5: Had one coming across the back line, exactly what you're
- 1:05:04Speaker 5: talking about. Did a nice job out in front of him. Yeah,
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: in traffic ball had some steam on it. Yeah, caught
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: it easy.
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: Yeah. So's he's got better hands than I thought. And
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: I think, you know, literally like you know, in a
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: straight line. He's maybe a little bit more explosive than
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: some of the other guys that they have, But I
- 1:05:20Speaker 6: don't really see much wiggle. He's kind of stiff to me.
- 1:05:23Speaker 6: I don't know. I still need to see a little
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: bit more out of Booty. I think we all got
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: infatuated with Douglas because it was different, Like it looks
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: the way that he moves, the quickness, the burst looks
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: different from than some of the other guys that they have,
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: whereas Booty kind of just reminds me a little bit
- 1:05:39Speaker 6: of some of the other people. So if you're going
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: to carry him like Juju born, like, where where is
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: he even? Is he like a third born string?
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Would burn go? Like?
- 1:05:50Speaker 5: I think your boy Jerry Thornton wrote that yesterday on Twitter.
- 1:05:54Speaker 5: You know, if if Douglas in booty, you know, continue
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: and do you push someone off the roster?
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: I mean I haven't seen enough to especially coming off
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: of Bourne's probably best practice that I've seen in a while.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: Yesterday we had like three catches. Yeah, I don't.
- 1:06:11Speaker 6: I think there is a formula where they do keep
- 1:06:13Speaker 6: six guys. Initially, I don't think that they'll carry six
- 1:06:16Speaker 6: for long. But I think there is a formula where
- 1:06:19Speaker 6: if they release maybe some of these special Teams guys
- 1:06:22Speaker 6: and do the old hey stick around like we're just
- 1:06:25Speaker 6: gonna do some roster tinkering and then we'll we'll get
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: you back on the fifty three, then I think it's possible.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Douglas returns too, right, Like, I mean, he doesn't boot
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: he's not a special Teams guy. I know he's not
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: gonna play.
- 1:06:34Speaker 5: Yeah, but Douglas isn't good. I mean, Marcus Jones is
- 1:06:36Speaker 5: going to return.
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: Right, just value If you're gonna be the fifth receiver,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: can you really only be a receiver? You know? That's yeah.
- 1:06:42Speaker 5: But like to my point is Douglas is really only
- 1:06:45Speaker 5: a receiver. Like he might be able to return, but
- 1:06:47Speaker 5: you're not going to not have Marcus Jones return. I
- 1:06:50Speaker 5: wouldn't think no, Like, isn't he too valuable in that?
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:06:53Speaker 6: Well, certainly on punt returns. I think there's a chance
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: that a guy like Isaiah Bolden might push him on kickoffs,
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: But I think punts, it's I mean, you're not He's
- 1:07:02Speaker 6: probably the best punt returner in the league right now,
- 1:07:04Speaker 6: so I think that that would be ridiculous.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: I'd be very surprised if they took that role away
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: from him.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Eldred Eldred's in North Carolina. What's up, Eldred?
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: Hey?
- 1:07:14Speaker 14: Tell us how y'all doing this morning? Yeah, I'm just
- 1:07:17Speaker 14: sitting in waiting question. Oh, we signed trade Power Flowers again? Correct?
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Yes, already done?
- 1:07:25Speaker 14: Okay, who's stamp do he take? And do you think
- 1:07:28Speaker 14: it's odd that we're boosting him the defense and not
- 1:07:30Speaker 14: the elefanse and not take it off air?
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: Yeah? I have a good one, Okay, thanks Eldred. Whose
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: spot does he take? I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: I think I think he's depth right now, and it's
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: not immediately apparent what Spotty's gonna fill. But I mean,
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: just to echo what we said earlier, it's it's it's
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: a hand down defensive end that Cam White.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: Maybe he takes key On White's reps, or maybe Evan
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: has it and wise he's a guy who sort of
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: there to help Keon White a little bit and ends
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: up on the practice squad like Jamie Collins did last year.
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: I like Evan's theory.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: I was almost gonna make the leap of could he
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: possibly threaten Lawrence guy? But they're they're different players, Yeah, different.
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: I mean, they are different players. But that's another thing
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: to keep in mind.
- 1:08:11Speaker 6: You know.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: And his question about why are they beefing up the
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: offense the defense rather than the offense. I think this
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: is just a guy that's available, and we know him,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: we're familiar with him. You know, we'll take a shot.
- 1:08:23Speaker 2: It's not going to cost him a lot of money.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I don't think.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: I don't look at it as beefing up the defense,
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: Yeah, no, no, I don't know I'm not sure he's
- 1:08:30Speaker 5: on the team.
- 1:08:30Speaker 6: Yeah. Our whole thing in March was like put a
- 1:08:33Speaker 6: name to the claim, and I think we get we're
- 1:08:35Speaker 6: getting a lot of this of what about the offense,
- 1:08:38Speaker 6: Like why aren't they signing a tackle? Like name a tackle,
- 1:08:40Speaker 6: Name a tackle who's available, that's going to move the needle.
- 1:08:43Speaker 6: It's it's August eighth, right, Like there's not If there
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: was a franchise left tackle just dangling out there, then
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: I'm sure that a team, if it's not the Patriots,
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: would be all over it. And same at receiver. They
- 1:08:55Speaker 6: that ship is sailed. They had they had DeAndre Hopkins
- 1:08:57Speaker 6: in the building, and that ship is sailed. I guess
- 1:09:00Speaker 6: maybe you could talk about the running backs, but I
- 1:09:02Speaker 6: don't think that Trey Flowers inhibits you from signing Zeke
- 1:09:05Speaker 6: or Dalvin Cook if that does come to fruition. So
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: I'm just if there was a tackle available that would
- 1:09:12Speaker 6: make a difference then, as a different conversation, but this
- 1:09:16Speaker 6: time of year, I don't really see who that is.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Ama writes in saying I started listening to Catch twenty
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: two and I enjoyed very much. That said, I have
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: an issue with one of Evans's takes. Evan keeps stating
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: that you can build a championship caliber team without a
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: franchise quarterback and gives the forty nine Ers as an example.
- 1:09:36Speaker 6: This is Barth's take.
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Allow me to replace snarky Paul on this one. One,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: it's so much harder to sustain success this way. And two,
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: you know who doesn't seem to believe it as well?
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: The forty nine ers who traded three first round picks
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: in order to try and find a franchise quarterback.
- 1:09:51Speaker 6: How did that go for them?
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: But they still wanted one?
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: How was winning a championship going for them?
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: Yeah? That's true too.
- 1:09:59Speaker 5: Yeah, Paul doesn't have to chime in on this one.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: You could definitely win a Super Bowl without a franchise quarterback.
- 1:10:05Speaker 5: I just think it's much much harder. And the email
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: is right. Let's say San Francisco kicks the door down
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: this year and Brock Purty wins it. How do you
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: keep all of those pieces that you need to win
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: it when you're doing it without the quarterback lifting everybody else?
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Know I you know what I mean?
- 1:10:26Speaker 6: I don't necessarily disagreute that.
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: How do you keep them?
- 1:10:31Speaker 5: How do you keep them all pay them, but then
- 1:10:34Speaker 5: they've already won. Now they want to go somewhere else
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: and make even more. Someone's going to pay them ridiculous money.
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: Right, Well, so you're saying they can't pay they.
- 1:10:42Speaker 5: Want no, I'm saying they want to leave. I no
- 1:10:45Speaker 5: longer need the wing if they want to just go
- 1:10:46Speaker 5: for every last dollar.
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: But if they give, why can't the forty nine ers
- 1:10:49Speaker 2: give them?
- 1:10:49Speaker 5: Well, they could if they wanted to. That's how you
- 1:10:51Speaker 5: could keep it together. That's how you could keep it together.
- 1:10:54Speaker 5: No team's ever done that. So I'm saying it's hard.
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: Why Because it's hard to keep guys hungry in.
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: Stay to trying to bake.
- 1:11:04Speaker 5: I know what you're trying to do, and I'm telling
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: you can do it, and you absolutely can do it.
- 1:11:07Speaker 5: But you know Brandon Au, the two linebackers, you know
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: Warner green Law. You need all of those guys to
- 1:11:17Speaker 5: be great. You know what I mean. When you don't
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: have a quarterback.
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: I think the just to push back a little bit
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: on the email or misconstruing a little bit. They don't
- 1:11:26Speaker 6: have the franchise quarterback currently. Maybe mac Jones turns into
- 1:11:30Speaker 6: the franchise quarterback. But as of right now, they don't
- 1:11:33Speaker 6: have the franchise quote unquote quarterback, and they also have
- 1:11:37Speaker 6: a quarterback on a rookie contract. So the only point
- 1:11:39Speaker 6: that Bart and I try to make about this is
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: not about sustained winning or anything like that. It's here's
- 1:11:45Speaker 6: your window to try to maximize Mac Jones on a
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: rookie deal and also help him out as much as
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: you possibly can while he's still cheap. And we don't
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: feel like they have adequately done that. And you look
- 1:11:59Speaker 6: at a lot a lot of the other quarterbacks around
- 1:12:02Speaker 6: the league that are were on that rookie contract, and
- 1:12:05Speaker 6: they all got their toys right like, they all got
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: these bells and whistles around them in this supporting cast
- 1:12:12Speaker 6: that really Joe Burrow, Josh Allen Tua, Like if you
- 1:12:16Speaker 6: put tyreek Kill and Jalen Waddle on this team right now,
- 1:12:18Speaker 6: at Bill O'Brien and Mac Jones, we're having a lot
- 1:12:22Speaker 6: of different conversations about where the twenty twenty three Patriots
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: might be going. And that's the bottom line. It has
- 1:12:29Speaker 6: nothing to do with like is this a sustainable model
- 1:12:31Speaker 6: or anything like that. What you hope is is you
- 1:12:34Speaker 6: hope you get a Jalen Hurts situation where you put
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: aj Brown and DeVante Smith in the good offensive line
- 1:12:39Speaker 6: and all of a sudden, now Jalen Hurts looks like
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: he's a franchise quarterback and is he truly on his own?
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: I don't know, but he's gonna get paid like one
- 1:12:48Speaker 6: and he's going to be their quarterback for the next
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: five years at least, so they've they've answered the question
- 1:12:54Speaker 6: that Jalen Hurts is their guide now and was that
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: a product of everything else around him improving or if
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: his own skills improved. I guess we can we can
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: argue that, but what difference does it make at that point.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: Donnie and Pittsburgh says he's tearing his hair out over
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: the Mac Zappi conversation. Not sure why some folks don't
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: understand that Mac is the starter but still has a
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: lot to prove to keep that job long term. As
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: a result, maybe some fans are being a bit too
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: loud and keeping their eyes on Zappy as the fallout plan.
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: Thanks for the coverage. It really makes a difference to
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: those of us outside the cable market blackout range.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: I mean, after the last couple of days, I'm not
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: sure how you could say, you know that Zappy has
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: a legitimate chance to like really unseat Mac at this point,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: he's got to He's gotta be a lot a lot better.
- 1:13:40Speaker 5: But I don't understand why this bothers people. And this
- 1:13:42Speaker 5: gets back to our buddy Greg, who evidently is now
- 1:13:46Speaker 5: being fed a lot of information that Mike and I
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: are talking about Greg Bdard a lot on the show.
- 1:13:51Speaker 5: I talk about a lot of people on this show
- 1:13:53Speaker 5: all the time, and I agree with a lot of them,
- 1:13:55Speaker 5: and I disagree with a lot of them. And that's
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: what I told Greg when we talked about this. Why
- 1:14:01Speaker 5: does it bother you? If some people think that Zappi
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: deserves a shot to win the job, they haven't been
- 1:14:07Speaker 5: blown away by Mac Jones the last two seasons. They
- 1:14:10Speaker 5: felt when Zappi played last year, it looked different, and
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: it looked better when he played parts of four games.
- 1:14:17Speaker 5: I am not in that camp. But much like we
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: had a conversation off air Mike about the greatest plays
- 1:14:23Speaker 5: in Super Bowl history when we're walking in, my opinion
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: doesn't need to be the opinion of everybody else. I
- 1:14:30Speaker 5: think Mac Jones is clearly the starter. I don't think
- 1:14:33Speaker 5: there's much of a chance of Zappi winning that job
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: unless Mac starts the season in very poor fashion and.
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Loses the job.
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: But I don't know why Evan can't think differently and
- 1:14:44Speaker 5: think that Bailey Zappy deserves a chance to compete.
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: Why.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: I think in some people's mind, if you're a fan
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: of the team, you have to be united behind your quarterback.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: You have one quarterback. If you have two quarterbacks, you
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: don't have a quarterback, and so everyone needs to back Mac.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: No. But but the opinion print the T shirt.
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: I understand what you're you're talking about will be best
- 1:15:05Speaker 5: for the team.
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: I'm talking about, but the fans.
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: But fans have different views, so like.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: But that's I'm just talking for the people who get
- 1:15:14Speaker 2: annoyed when people start.
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: Taking somebody else is annoyed that Bailey Zappi is not
- 1:15:19Speaker 5: that guy that you're not getting united behind.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: I I okay, that's fine, But I'm just saying that's
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: where these people are coming from. You back your quarterback.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: Mac is the number one quarterback. You back him.
- 1:15:30Speaker 6: My general observation, I agree hundred percent. Would douce that
- 1:15:34Speaker 6: if Bailey Zappi is really going to truly push Mackie
- 1:15:36Speaker 6: has not played well enough in the last week to
- 1:15:40Speaker 6: be able to say that one hundred percent. And I
- 1:15:42Speaker 6: would also say that I don't think that there's a
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: competition for Week one. I think Mac Jones is going
- 1:15:48Speaker 6: to start against the Philadelphia Eagles, But the way that
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: they are running these practices is at least keeping Bailey
- 1:15:54Speaker 6: Zappy in their back pocket for if Mac goes belly
- 1:15:57Speaker 6: up in the first month of the season, because he's
- 1:16:00Speaker 6: more involved in these practices than most backup quarterbacks are.
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: When you have an entrench starter, like if you have
- 1:16:05Speaker 6: a Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen Herbert like that type of starter,
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: then your backup is not splitting reps with you in
- 1:16:13Speaker 6: practice like that just isn't how these practices typically are run.
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: And I've seen a lot of Bailey Zappy for.
- 1:16:20Speaker 5: With eleven yesterday and I think they both threw like
- 1:16:24Speaker 5: twenty passes, so they that's that's a lot of reps
- 1:16:28Speaker 5: for a practice for a backup quarterback. And again I
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: totally agree, we haven't seen. We haven't seen anything that
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: would indicate that Bill is looking at this as a
- 1:16:38Speaker 5: as a competition based on the way Mac is always
- 1:16:42Speaker 5: going first, always sort of with the quote unquote frontline guys,
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: and Zappy goes in after that. But I agree with
- 1:16:52Speaker 5: Evan that Week one, there is no There's no question
- 1:16:56Speaker 5: in my mind. I'd be curious even to see if
- 1:16:59Speaker 5: what kind of eatmn Zappi gets Thursday night for Houston, right,
- 1:17:02Speaker 5: does he get the starter treatment where he goes out
- 1:17:05Speaker 5: and plays ten to fifteen snaps and then he's done
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: middle of the first quarter, into the first quarter and
- 1:17:11Speaker 5: it's Mic Soreley and Cunningham to finish it off. I
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: kind of expect it to be something like that, and
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: that I think speaks to Evans's point, like in other places,
- 1:17:21Speaker 5: when you have like a like a real starter and
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: then a backup that's really unproven, the backup plays a
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: lot in that game. He might even play the whole game.
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: And I don't think that Zap. I mean, maybe I'll
- 1:17:34Speaker 5: be surprised on Thursday night, but I don't think we'll
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: see a ton of Zappi Thursday night.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: I agree with you, but I'd like to see it.
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: I'd like to see I wouldn't mind it, but the
- 1:17:42Speaker 5: Bill might just look at us like, what are we
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: getting out of this? When you know, once you get
- 1:17:47Speaker 5: beyond the first quarter. There's nobody really out in the
- 1:17:50Speaker 5: field that's gonna be a huge part of anybody's team
- 1:17:53Speaker 5: that year.
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: He's in the back pocket. That just is the way
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: I look at it is. Mac is the starter for now.
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: Mac is is our will be the starter to start
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: the season. But if this goes wrong and there were
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: one in three or something.
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: Can we play the game? Can we play you know
- 1:18:10Speaker 5: how Paul loves the p U games. Let's do Evans
- 1:18:14Speaker 5: thing they just sort of prefaced. Let's say he starts
- 1:18:18Speaker 5: the season like he did last year, only he doesn't
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: get hurt. Does Bill make a move and if so win.
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: It's tough because I felt some positive Mac juju after
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: that Ravens game, and like, until he got hurt, it
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: felt like, all right, yeah they lost, but I felt
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: like we kind of learned something and then it got derailed.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: So I don't know, I'm a little bit. Had he
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: been healthy, I would have been excited going into Green
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: Bay to see if Mac could maybe turn the corner.
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: And you know, so I wouldn't have been as quick
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: to if that makes sense, Like, you know, he made
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: some of.
- 1:18:46Speaker 6: His best high end plays in that Baltimore game of
- 1:18:50Speaker 6: like down the field, that fourth down like scramble that
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: he had that he you know, bought some time and
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: made a play. I think it was to John new
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: Smith that that they converted on fourth down. That was
- 1:19:03Speaker 6: one of the better like playmaking Mac games that we've seen,
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: not just Game Manager, you know, going, you know, not
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: shooting themselves in.
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: Some plays in that game, no doubt. But I would
- 1:19:14Speaker 5: say over the balance of those first three games, he
- 1:19:16Speaker 5: did not play well. So do you think if that
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: happened again this year like last year, he wouldn't have
- 1:19:23Speaker 5: lost his job if they just if that play that
- 1:19:25Speaker 5: he got hurt on was just a regular last play
- 1:19:28Speaker 5: of the game and whatever, he would have played the
- 1:19:31Speaker 5: next game. There's no doubt in my mind. But this year,
- 1:19:34Speaker 5: do you think if he gets off to a bad
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: start again after a month, maybe six weeks, does Bill
- 1:19:39Speaker 5: look at it to make them right?
- 1:19:42Speaker 6: I think it depends on their record. If they're winning
- 1:19:44Speaker 6: and he's just kind of fine, then I don't think
- 1:19:48Speaker 6: that they would make a change. I think you only
- 1:19:50Speaker 6: make a change if they're losing.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: There's a big propensity to throw turnovers.
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: I agree with you, I don't think it would happen
- 1:19:57Speaker 5: unless they're really but I'd say too though.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: This is something that I've picked up with Evan a
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: lot is playmaker. The word playmaker with him when talking
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: about Mac Jones and Bailey Zappy. And I mean, I
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: don't want to speak for Evan. Of course, we're here
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: at the Patriots, we speak for ourselves. But not like
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: in Baltimore, he said, you know, he says a lot
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of times like Bailey Zappy has a little bit of
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: the playmaker gene maybe that Mac doesn't have, and not
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: really something firm that you can grasp on to, like
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: say this is wide but just watching practice sometimes he's
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: a little bit more willing to to maybe take a
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: chance or to you know, maybe try something a little stupid,
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: but it's practice, you know, those kind of things that
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: it's just something I picked up watching this new like
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: side arm thing.
- 1:20:39Speaker 5: He's got to put that away.
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I don't think he's good.
- 1:20:41Speaker 6: Happens a lot so he He's been widely inconsistent throwing
- 1:20:45Speaker 6: the football, I think, especially to the first and second
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: level for basically all camp, like the That surprises me
- 1:20:53Speaker 6: because I thought that he's a pretty accurate guy, like
- 1:20:55Speaker 6: he can control the ball for the most part. But
- 1:20:58Speaker 6: Mac has really been headed and shoulders above him at
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: the first two levels. And I think pre snab Max
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: still better than he is. And maybe that's just because
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: Max a year ahead, but I still feel like he
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: gets the team into the best play and more often
- 1:21:11Speaker 6: than Bailey Zappi does. But Zappi's got this just little
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: thing about him that he's got a little like he
- 1:21:18Speaker 6: doesn't have a big arm, but he does still have
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: that game. Yeah, it's just like a little gun slinger
- 1:21:23Speaker 6: thing in him, where like he'll move up in the
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: pocket or he'll like you know, step up and slide
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: to his left or right and then you know, kind
- 1:21:30Speaker 6: of whip a side arm throw around a linebacker and
- 1:21:32Speaker 6: you're just kind of like, I don't think the other
- 1:21:34Speaker 6: guy can do that. Like I think he can do that,
- 1:21:37Speaker 6: but I don't think that Mac can do it. But
- 1:21:39Speaker 6: Mac consistently hits the layups way more than Bailey Zappi does,
- 1:21:42Speaker 6: and that's probably more important.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: I think that speaks to kind of what Paul was
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: saying about. You know, the people out there that kind
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: of want to give Zappy a chance, I think this
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: is part of what they see in him a little bit.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: And not that there's a huge sample size to draw from,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: but they feel it.
- 1:21:54Speaker 5: He played parts of four games last year. They were
- 1:21:57Speaker 5: two and two in the four games, like he played
- 1:22:00Speaker 5: the vast majority of the Green Bay game, I wouldn't
- 1:22:03Speaker 5: blame him for the Chicago game. He came in was
- 1:22:05Speaker 5: down ten to nothing. His passer rating in those four
- 1:22:10Speaker 5: games that he played was one hundred. I mean it
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: was well above what and I know passer rating is
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: not the be all end all, but it's apples to apples.
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: I'm comparing the stats. It was well above what Mac
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: Jones did. I personally don't think that ZAPPI. I think
- 1:22:26Speaker 5: if he's one of those guys, like a utility player
- 1:22:29Speaker 5: in baseball, that if you had to play them all
- 1:22:31Speaker 5: the time, you'd eventually see the warts yea, and you
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: realize this is why he's a good backup. He can
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: go in and he'll do some things like Evan said,
- 1:22:39Speaker 5: and maybe take some risks, and when they work, you
- 1:22:42Speaker 5: look great.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: But then when you.
- 1:22:44Speaker 5: Try to start week after week after week, you're going
- 1:22:47Speaker 5: to see some passes getting batted down, like we've seen
- 1:22:49Speaker 5: constantly in camp, we saw in Chicago the game against Chicago.
- 1:22:55Speaker 5: I think there's a difference between the two guys. But
- 1:22:57Speaker 5: I understand why some people look in and say he
- 1:23:00Speaker 5: played great those four games. He was better even though
- 1:23:03Speaker 5: it was Detroit and Cleveland that he played really well against.
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: There's no real context there.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: Yeah, back when Detroit wasn't that good.
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: Well, the defense was never good for one second of
- 1:23:12Speaker 5: the season, and that particular game, none of them plays.
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: They went for every fourth down and didn't.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: Make it, right.
- 1:23:18Speaker 5: I mean, if you look back at that game and
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: if if that adults it just kicked field goals, it
- 1:23:23Speaker 5: would have been a close game, right, But he just
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: kept going for it. And not only they weren't getting it,
- 1:23:27Speaker 5: some of them they were turning over and ended up
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: in the other end zone.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Nicks in the car and the a stick and hotline.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: What's up? Nick?
- 1:23:34Speaker 15: Hey, guys, first time, long time on my way to
- 1:23:38Speaker 15: the Patriots practice with my son Braden right now.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: Nice.
- 1:23:42Speaker 15: Just want to let you know we're definitely part of
- 1:23:44Speaker 15: the silent majority that listened to all the podcasts but don't.
- 1:23:48Speaker 14: Call enough to contribute.
- 1:23:49Speaker 15: But you guys do a great job. I love everything
- 1:23:50Speaker 15: you guys do.
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: We appreciate the hundreds of thousands of you.
- 1:23:55Speaker 15: Yeah, there's a lot of us, trust me, there is.
- 1:23:58Speaker 15: So got a couple of questions. One, is there anything
- 1:24:01Speaker 15: we'll learn about the concept that Bill O'Brien will be
- 1:24:05Speaker 15: implementing this year from preseason game number one or is
- 1:24:08Speaker 15: it kind of just more like just like what we
- 1:24:11Speaker 15: would learned from the kind of like the players. Not much.
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: Yeah, not much. It's gonna be all vanilla and basic stuff.
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: And you know that that's that's the thing with preseason. Yeah,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: I don't think you're gonna what you'll see.
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: Though our packages for players, So you'll see all of
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: a sudden, you know, I don't know, name a running back,
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: we'll get like four or five carries in a row,
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: or they'll start, you know, targeting a certain receiver, uh,
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: you know, in a certain series. So you'll see some
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: of that.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: I think too, if if if Malie Cunningham gets in
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: and they start running read options stuff like, that'll be
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: kind of fun to watch. I mean, that'd be I
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: don't know if that's going to be part of their
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: regular season package, but it might just be fun stuff
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: to watch in the preseason that they experiment a little
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: bit with him.
- 1:24:52Speaker 6: I think I think they'll they'll run their base play
- 1:24:55Speaker 6: and they have to run something, right, So they're gonna
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: run their base plays offensively. They're not gonna run any
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: of the of the tricks, like, they're not gonna run
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: any of the cool stuff, but they'll run their base
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: plays and in a lot of ways like and I'll
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: try my best, I'm sure to say, Okay, well, this
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: is gonna be their foundational stuff. Then what cool stuff
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: can then come off of the foundational stuff that maybe
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: is more of that like PhD level that we'll get
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: to in the regular season, and that's gonna be the
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: stuff that I think, you know, you'll try to spin forward.
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: But they they'll run their their base plays. I mean,
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: they're gonna run their offense. It's not like they're gonna,
- 1:25:30Speaker 6: you know, run a high school offense just because it's
- 1:25:33Speaker 6: you'll have.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: To extrapolate what were you what was your play?
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: Pop leads?
- 1:25:38Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: But you know, if they they run some of their
- 1:25:41Speaker 6: you know, some of the things that we've seen in practice.
- 1:25:43Speaker 6: I don't want to give too much away, but if
- 1:25:44Speaker 6: they run some of those things, and maybe it's watered
- 1:25:47Speaker 6: down for the preseason, but you can see, all right, well,
- 1:25:50Speaker 6: once we get into the regular season. This is it's
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: gonna be at this next you know kind of iteration
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: or this next step, and then we can have some fun.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: So wit zone.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: I hope not right, Nick, Thanks for the call. Have
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: fun at practice today.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: Let's get downhill.
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: We'll see out there.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: Uh, Steve's in Treasure Island, Florida.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: I've been there, it says.
- 1:26:08Speaker 2: Everyone seems to be sleeping on the Patriots with the
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: over under at seven and a half in fourth place
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: in the East. What am I missing? Patriots heavy top
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: ten or five defense, good running game, likely improved passing
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: attack under Bill O'Brien, and likely a much better kicking game.
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: They were a couple of brain cramps from the playoffs
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: last year. I think they will surprise many teams this year.
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: The schedule, that's what you're missing.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I mean, I think everything he wrote was was right.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: But that's in this division. That's a lot of uncertainty
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: on the offense.
- 1:26:37Speaker 5: Why is the kicking game improved? I guess we're going also,
- 1:26:41Speaker 5: don't We're gonna We're gonna have a rookie kicker and
- 1:26:43Speaker 5: we're gonna assume that he's gonna make all the kicks
- 1:26:45Speaker 5: that Nick Volch dis good.
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: That's a good that's a good call.
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: It's also irrelevant.
- 1:26:50Speaker 5: He's also a rookie. We're just going to assume that
- 1:26:52Speaker 5: he's going to be better.
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: It's also all irrelevant.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: I agree with that where was the where was the
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: passing offense?
- 1:26:57Speaker 6: MATS team is not going to win two more games
- 1:26:59Speaker 6: because the special teams is better, I can promise you now.
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: But if all those things are true, they could still
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: have a not as good record as last year because
- 1:27:07Speaker 2: of the record. I mean, because of the schedule and
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: the teams they're playing. They're playing the meat of the
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: you know, it's it's some of the best quarterbacks.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: In the league.
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: Yeah, the schedule is definitely tougher than last year. And
- 1:27:21Speaker 5: I think that people only look all the time when
- 1:27:25Speaker 5: you have a disappointing season. You always look at the
- 1:27:27Speaker 5: games that you lost in crushing manners like the Raiders
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: and you know Cincinnati Vikings.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: You know Vikings could have won that game.
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: Why they that Hunter Henry was a touchdown? They called
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: that back.
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: Okay, so you still lose. We should have won that game.
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: Pay a little better defense, No.
- 1:27:50Speaker 5: I know that you play a little better defense. Yes,
- 1:27:53Speaker 5: I agree, and if you play a little better offense
- 1:27:56Speaker 5: in any of the nine games that you lost, you
- 1:27:58Speaker 5: might have won some of those too.
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: You should have won vikings.
- 1:28:01Speaker 5: But I just like, no one ever looks at some
- 1:28:03Speaker 5: games that you win and say, wow, you know, a
- 1:28:07Speaker 5: couple of things fell into place for us on that
- 1:28:09Speaker 5: game and we were we found a way to win it.
- 1:28:11Speaker 5: Like you know, Kyler Murray tearing his ACL in the
- 1:28:14Speaker 5: first series of the game. You know, I'm like, no
- 1:28:17Speaker 5: one ever looks it that way, right, you know, the
- 1:28:20Speaker 5: almost Marcus Jones returning a punt for a touchdown as
- 1:28:23Speaker 5: time expires. Like you don't win a lot of games
- 1:28:26Speaker 5: like that, you know, Like, I just think there's some
- 1:28:29Speaker 5: balance to be had there. But the bigger overriding factors
- 1:28:32Speaker 5: what you guys said, The schedule is more difficult.
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: Depending on who you which analytics you like. The Patriots
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: by some metrics have the hardest schedule in the NFL.
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: And we think, now maybe the just collapse. We all
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: hope that happens, but I don't. I think Aaron Rodgers
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: is still a good quarterback, and I think they're going
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: to be better than I'll tell you what I liked
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: to beat him by a touchdown in one of the games, and.
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: It was a social team's touchdown both of the games.
- 1:28:57Speaker 5: Yeah, both of the games. You've beat them by one score. Yeah.
- 1:29:01Speaker 5: But what I liked about the email because I've heard
- 1:29:04Speaker 5: a lot of that they're going to be better, They're
- 1:29:05Speaker 5: going to be better, They're gonna be They're not gonna
- 1:29:07Speaker 5: be you know seven, I got the over, and it's
- 1:29:09Speaker 5: always that. It's always the Jets that's not gonna work out.
- 1:29:12Speaker 5: There's still the Jets, Aaron Rodgers. You know, Miami two
- 1:29:15Speaker 5: is gonna get hurt. I mean he's always hurt. And
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: look at all the squabbles in Buffalo. That's all I
- 1:29:18Speaker 5: ever hear. At least this email told me that we
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: have what could be a top five defense, a great
- 1:29:25Speaker 5: running game, which should be an improved passing game with
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: Billy Oh, and he's excited about you know, the rookie kickers.
- 1:29:31Speaker 5: Like he gave me four factors that you think of
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: your team is going to be good. I like that,
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: Like that's the way you should look at it. It's
- 1:29:38Speaker 5: not hope all the other teams fall apart.
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: I could no.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: But what I'm saying is that's the basis for optimism, Fred,
- 1:29:44Speaker 5: like I would rather have my to go back to you.
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: We have to be united behind our quarterback. I want
- 1:29:49Speaker 5: to be united behind thinking my team is better than
- 1:29:52Speaker 5: you think it is. I think the players on my
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: team are better than what Vegas thinks they are.
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: Do you know what I mean?
- 1:29:58Speaker 5: Yeah, not like Aaron ar is forty, he's just gonna
- 1:30:01Speaker 5: fall off a cliff.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: Sweet Kid writes in do you guys have faith enough
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: in ushe to take it to the next level? Is
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: he a Batman or a Robin? There is a value
- 1:30:10Speaker 2: in both, but I just wonder, well he always needed
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: Judon around.
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: I think he's good. I think he's a real good player.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: I mean, I know he's got some you know, issues
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: of not being the most well rounded player perhaps that
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: we want him to be. But I think he's gonna
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: make a big impact this year. He's fast, he's in
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: his prime. I mean it's just, you know, you get
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: used to watching some of the athletes on this team
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: and their athleticism doesn't really pop, and there's keep using
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: a little pop. But there's a few of them and
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: he's one of them. So I you know, I got
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: to think that he's going to be similarly productive this year,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: and I think even if Judon were to go down,
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I think would still be an effective third down guy.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Maybe not as much, of course, but I think he's
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: a good player. I think he's a good player, and
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: I'd like to see him stick around.
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: Let's see. This is Ray from Saint Louis shout out
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: to Evan. I really appreciate your tweets during practice. Since
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: there's no live PU show there, that's really helpful. I
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: have three questions for you all. One, can you name
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: someone that started camp really slow but played a big
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: role in our in in that year. One that comes
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: to mind is Jason McCarthy.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Oh, he did have a slow start too, so somebody
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: thought he was going to make the team.
- 1:31:18Speaker 6: He was in the game in the fourth quarter of
- 1:31:20Speaker 6: the fourth he thought.
- 1:31:21Speaker 5: He was going to get cut, right, Yeah, I know.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: You gotta tweet him that question, Evan, you some cordy questions.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: You think he was trying to get anybody else that
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: started camp really slow but played a big role later
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: in the year.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: That's a question for for the twin cast for the
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: preseason when you were playing the fourth quarter of the
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: last preseason game. Sorry, I know we were asking for this. Yeah,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: there you go. I digress.
- 1:31:44Speaker 5: It's good probabouldn't wouldn't necessarily looking for questions. I was
- 1:31:47Speaker 5: looking for storylines. I received a grand total of zero suggests.
- 1:31:51Speaker 6: Well, because I was like, I'm sure you already have
- 1:31:53Speaker 6: a lot of them, like to be the big the
- 1:31:55Speaker 6: biggest one is like Devin on Gonzales and like what
- 1:31:58Speaker 6: it's like to be a rookie corner in this system
- 1:32:00Speaker 6: and in that sort of thing like which I'm sure
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: you already have.
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: So I got you on that one, bro. Yeah, I
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: suggested to Matt to and we're gonna go over this
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: tomorrow with them, with Jason and Devon. But I like
- 1:32:14Speaker 5: to get Devn's thoughts on individual players a that he
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: played with a little bit overlapped with, and then specifically you.
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: Can ask them about Chase Winovich because he's on the Texas.
- 1:32:23Speaker 5: Now you know, Gonzales was a guy, you know, obviously,
- 1:32:26Speaker 5: I'd like to get Devin's thoughts as a former you know,
- 1:32:29Speaker 5: both of their thoughts as former rookie cornerbacks.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: You know, what have you seen from him? Although I
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: know that they haven't seen much of practice. That was
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: the only day Chase Winovich. My wife goes to me
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: that she's mentioned like a friend of hers that her.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: She's like, oh, Bobby whatever, friend of her, boyfriend of her,
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: got girl she works with. She's he just got a
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: job working for Chase Winovich's company. I'm like, what, like what?
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: What does he have a company here? I think it's
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: like some kind of video Produnce's video.
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: Yeah, it used to be in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: Because he loves New Hampshire. I was like, he was
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: here like two years. He didn't really do much. Somehow
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: he's got a production company still based in New England.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: Yeah, everyone told us how good he was.
- 1:33:06Speaker 2: It's like two young guys.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: We had a camera in a micy you know that's
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: just follow me around. Yeah.
- 1:33:11Speaker 14: Uh.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Second question of three, who do you think will be
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: our surprise cut?
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: Surprise cut?
- 1:33:20Speaker 13: Oh?
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: Like surprise cuts.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I just I just I do
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: I I for no other reason. I just wonder about
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: Lawrence guy if like what happened with that contract situation
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: where he's at in his career. They don't really have
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: a player to replace him, so I can't really say
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: it's gonna be him, But you know, it's just he've
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: been kind of running these guys, the veterans up front.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: I just is something going to change this year with that?
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: I don't know. No, no signs have told me yes,
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: but I don't.
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: I don't surprise if they cut Mac, that would be
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: a surprise.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Fred. Yeah.
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: The one I threw out before camp started is Adrian Phillips.
- 1:33:52Speaker 5: I do not think he's getting cut. I don't. I
- 1:33:55Speaker 5: still don't, didn't then don't now. I just feel like
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: that's a there's a lot of depth that that spot.
- 1:34:00Speaker 5: He's sort of a veteran guy, some wear and tear.
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: I'd almost throw Mills in that conversation. I don't think
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: he's gonna get cut. He's versatile, they've got cornerback depth issues.
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: But you know, is he really going to be a
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: factor in that safety group. I mean, it does look
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: like he is going to be. But he's another one
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: that will maybe surprise me, but not totally totally surprised me.
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: Jalen Mills is the one I would go with, just
- 1:34:20Speaker 6: because if either of those rookie corners, Speed or Bolden
- 1:34:24Speaker 6: is going to end up being something, and I think
- 1:34:26Speaker 6: Joshua Bloedsoe when he gets his opportunities, you know, he
- 1:34:30Speaker 6: doesn't look like out of place.
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: A couple plays the other day, I think.
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: But ultimately I think that the Jack Jones situation, you
- 1:34:39Speaker 6: gotta keep, you gotta keep Jalen Mills because he might
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: have to play outside courts.
- 1:34:43Speaker 5: I love that question. We get it every year at camp.
- 1:34:45Speaker 5: I love the surprise, but like I just I feel
- 1:34:47Speaker 5: like it is always one of the most misunderstood answers
- 1:34:50Speaker 5: that we have. The answer is probably nobody that's really
- 1:34:54Speaker 5: gonna take you. Like even Lawrence guy, like you would
- 1:34:58Speaker 5: look back and you'd say, well, yeah.
- 1:35:00Speaker 2: The fact that we're thinking there could be a reason
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: he wouldn't be that he's.
- 1:35:04Speaker 5: Many kids, you know, he know he's bitching about his contract,
- 1:35:07Speaker 5: and they kind of got to you know, like, well,
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: what's the difference between this guy and that guy?
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, like if they if they really going
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: to be David Harris, Kevin Harris, I always call him
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: that would I mean, that would be a surprise.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: But see some of these though, were like that would
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: be stupid, like why would you cut?
- 1:35:22Speaker 5: You know, like some of them it's like Taekwon Thornton,
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: you could say, like, and that just to me doesn't
- 1:35:26Speaker 5: make any sense. That's a second, you know, rookie contract.
- 1:35:28Speaker 5: Second year. They're not cutting, no, no, no, But that's
- 1:35:32Speaker 5: that's what would make it a surprise.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Unless Booty catches another ball today.
- 1:35:34Speaker 5: And now if Booty can catch one with his foot
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: today instead of it just one, you.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: Kind of have to say, I didn't see that coming, right, right,
- 1:35:42Speaker 2: and so right, and.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: Just by the nature of the exercise.
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: And there's almost never like listen, we all do roster
- 1:35:48Speaker 5: projections and none of us get all fifty three exactly right, Okay,
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: but everybody's pretty close. And the guys that ended up
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: getting cut, it's usually what you're thinking when you're having
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: you know these you know his booty gonna be on
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: the practice squad or on the roster. Well they kept
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: him this week and then next week it changes or whatever.
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: It's never like mac Jones got cut. Didn't see that coming.
- 1:36:09Speaker 6: Yeah, I think the one only surprise was cam Like
- 1:36:12Speaker 6: that was probably the one only the only one that
- 1:36:15Speaker 6: I was last year, I think, didn't they it was
- 1:36:17Speaker 6: last year of the year before they initially cut Myles
- 1:36:19Speaker 6: Bryant at some point and like that was like the
- 1:36:22Speaker 6: surprise cut of the whole thing, And if Miles Brian
- 1:36:24Speaker 6: is the surprise cut of your of your cut down.
- 1:36:28Speaker 5: And with those guys, I would say, like even that
- 1:36:31Speaker 5: has got a story behind it, because you know he's
- 1:36:34Speaker 5: coming back. I mean, a guy that they like, you
- 1:36:36Speaker 5: just don't see him getting cut and he's gone. They
- 1:36:39Speaker 5: just cut him and that's it. He didn't fit.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: I gotta be honest. I screwed around a little bit
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: with Pat's Picker, which is just like an app online
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: that they have the roster all updated and you can
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: make your own fifty three months. I don't find it
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: all that hard this year. There's not a lot of
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: like hard cuts or anything.
- 1:36:52Speaker 5: I never find it hard, but I mean I'm also
- 1:36:54Speaker 5: never right, you know what I mean. But I find
- 1:36:57Speaker 5: pretty easy to get down. There's been many times, as
- 1:36:59Speaker 5: you know, I get down to fifty one or so, yeah, yeah.
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: Yeah, I paid him some guarantee money and I.
- 1:37:09Speaker 5: Think he's like, yeah, it's a good one.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: Of all the kind of like little special teams things
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: they did this offseason, that feels like the one, you know.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: What, we'd rather keep that extra receiver. We got to
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: make space.
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: Now because he can play linebacker two.
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: And we talked about a lot of like the breakup
- 1:37:23Speaker 5: of the breakup of positions on offense. You're a little
- 1:37:27Speaker 5: short on tight ends, you're a little short on wide receivers,
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: You're a little short on running backs. So one of
- 1:37:32Speaker 5: those is going to feature more guys staying than you thought.
- 1:37:35Speaker 5: But there's probably gonna open up some roster spots for
- 1:37:37Speaker 5: other guys because think about it. I mean, are you
- 1:37:40Speaker 5: gonna kick keep Foster and Socle or Lumpkin to go
- 1:37:45Speaker 5: with the other two, or you're gonna keep you know,
- 1:37:47Speaker 5: is time Montgomery you're going to be part of this team?
- 1:37:49Speaker 5: You know, I suppose he could be, even he's been hurt,
- 1:37:52Speaker 5: yeah for a week and a half. You know, do
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: you end up keeping all five of those running backs
- 1:37:57Speaker 5: like J J.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Taylor? Does he stay?
- 1:37:59Speaker 5: I don't know. I mean, yeah, someone's got to go.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: Third question, do you think we won't hear anything about
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: Zeke until we see what Dalvin Cook gets?
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I don't know. I just I'd like to make a
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: move sooner and later.
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: I mean, I don't think Elliott has anything to do
- 1:38:15Speaker 5: with Dalvin Cook. I think Elliott is probably shopping around.
- 1:38:19Speaker 5: I think he's seeing like the you know, Benjamin Kidd
- 1:38:21Speaker 5: from the Saints, who was supposed to step in for
- 1:38:24Speaker 5: Alvin Kamara, and now they're supposedly talking to Kareem Hunt. Right,
- 1:38:28Speaker 5: maybe Zeke is saying.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Hey, what else is gonna come? Else?
- 1:38:31Speaker 5: Shake loose, someone else gets hurt.
- 1:38:33Speaker 6: Yeah, I think that that's exactly what's happened. I think
- 1:38:36Speaker 6: all the running backs are waiting to see if the
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: attrition of camp in the preseason, who gets unfortunately, who
- 1:38:43Speaker 6: gets hurt? And where does that help out my market?
- 1:38:46Speaker 6: Because right now, Dalvin cook his offer from the Jets
- 1:38:49Speaker 6: apparently is extremely low, like nowhere.
- 1:38:51Speaker 5: Close half half of what he was looking for according
- 1:38:54Speaker 5: to Fred Toucher.
- 1:38:54Speaker 6: Yeah, really not close to what he expected. And I'm
- 1:38:59Speaker 6: sure Zeke's is even less than Dalvin Cooks. So it's
- 1:39:02Speaker 6: it's tough sleather.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: Sobo Elliott's only twenty eight, is that true?
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Yeah? Sounds about right?
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: Boy. A lot of wearing those tires though, right right?
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, well, he carried the ball aton at
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: Ohio State also, so you know he's first five years
- 1:39:17Speaker 6: from like the last two at Ohio State to the
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: first three in Dallas. It's got to be well over
- 1:39:21Speaker 6: a thousand carries.
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: Hello everyone, Hello Marine Claire. Hello, do you think we
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: can get Soco and Firks or so four tight ends?
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: No, there's no way, Yeah, just kidding.
- 1:39:34Speaker 6: What I find interesting is, like, dude, well they well,
- 1:39:37Speaker 6: they roll the dice of getting those guys back on
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: the practice squad with the intention of maybe elevating them
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: on game day a couple of times before they officially
- 1:39:47Speaker 6: have to make a move to put them on the
- 1:39:48Speaker 6: fifty three. Because once you get into a couple weeks
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: in the season, somebody ends up on injured reserve and
- 1:39:53Speaker 6: now all of a sudden you have a roster spot.
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: I think it's possible that they just roll the dice
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: and they got three guys, and if you want to
- 1:40:01Speaker 6: throw Scottie Washington in there too, it is not really
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: a tight end, but still four guys that all could
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: probably make a case for the third tight end spot.
- 1:40:09Speaker 6: So might as well just cut all four of them,
- 1:40:11Speaker 6: and whoever getends up back on the practice squad is
- 1:40:14Speaker 6: is your depth?
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: Heartless? Seven? I think so play a ton in the
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: preseason though, too, I think, I mean, I think he
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: has a legit shot just to make the team. Straight up,
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: you know, with what they need and his size, and
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: he's had a good camp.
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: I would say he's been the best on a more
- 1:40:27Speaker 5: consistently basis of that group. You know, if you wanted
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: to throw ferks are in there, Mike, maybe you sort
- 1:40:36Speaker 5: of sell yourself on the fact that he can play
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: in the backfield too, you know, like in that the
- 1:40:40Speaker 5: role that that Evan talked about earlier. Maybe you save
- 1:40:43Speaker 5: a roster spot doing that. You know, I don't know,
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: I think there are I think it's reasonable to expect
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: any of those guys to get cut and you'd be
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: able to hold on practice squad.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: I forgot about him.
- 1:40:56Speaker 6: I do so last year they carried two tight ends,
- 1:40:59Speaker 6: just Hunter Henry Johnny Smith. But the year before they
- 1:41:02Speaker 6: had Yakub, so they carried two tight ends and a
- 1:41:04Speaker 6: full back. So I kind of counted as three.
- 1:41:07Speaker 5: And Soco was on the practice squad all year, right,
- 1:41:10Speaker 5: diet I remember, Yeah, And then Scotty Washington was elevating late.
- 1:41:14Speaker 6: Yeah, I just wonder, like, who's the little Jordan, Like
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: some one of those guys is gonna get like is
- 1:41:20Speaker 6: gonna get like the couple game day elevations just for
- 1:41:23Speaker 6: a blocking role, whether it's Socle or Ferbster. I think
- 1:41:25Speaker 6: are the leaders in that clubhouse, and maybe eventually it
- 1:41:29Speaker 6: either doesn't work and gets cut like Little Jordan, or
- 1:41:32Speaker 6: they end up signing.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: Him Kevin from Dublin. With each passing month, I'm more
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: convinced that Mac Jones won't have his option picked up
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: by the Patriots. Let's say it is a given that
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: Mac has gone after twenty twenty four. Do you think
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: that the Don shul record chase will make it likely
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: the Patriots will seek out a known quantity and free
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: agency such as will build prioritize having a good team
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: to beat the Shulele record rather than take the risks
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: to win the Lombardi.
- 1:42:01Speaker 6: So I will say right now that I would I
- 1:42:04Speaker 6: would be absolutely floored if they don't pick up his
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: fifth year option. Yeah, he would literally he would have
- 1:42:11Speaker 6: to completely crater for them to not pick up the
- 1:42:14Speaker 6: fifth year option, because it's a.
- 1:42:16Speaker 5: Good deal and it's team control, like it's just.
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: And if you don't pick it up, do you just
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: get rid of him at that point and not play
- 1:42:26Speaker 2: have him played that fifth year because now he's upset.
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: The fourth year Daniel Jones thing well, that's the thing,
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: is like, look at what happened to look at what
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: happened to the Giants and Daniel Jones exactly where I
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: was going.
- 1:42:37Speaker 6: They didn't pick up his fifth year option because he's stunk,
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: fair like fairly they didn't pick it up, but then
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: they ended up having to grossly overpay him for his
- 1:42:45Speaker 6: fifth season because he had a decent fourth year. Right,
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: So that's the risk that you run. And if they
- 1:42:51Speaker 6: go if Mac has like an okay third season but
- 1:42:54Speaker 6: it's nothing special, and then next offseason they actually make
- 1:42:57Speaker 6: a move for a receiver or something like that, then
- 1:42:59Speaker 6: he has this this really good fourth year. Now you're
- 1:43:03Speaker 6: looking at paying him at forty five million dollars in
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: his fifth year instead of twenty. So it just that's
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: not a good deal financially. It just doesn't make any
- 1:43:11Speaker 6: sense unless he's really terrible.
- 1:43:12Speaker 5: He'd have to be really bad. I agree with Evan.
- 1:43:14Speaker 5: I would say it's probably somewhere above ninety percent that
- 1:43:18Speaker 5: they would pick up the fifth year option. Too good
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: of a deal. They're about the deal that's next spring.
- 1:43:25Speaker 6: Yeah, and you can trade him on the fifth year
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: option too, Like if you end up deciding that he's
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: not your guy, but somebody else is intrigued. And it's
- 1:43:34Speaker 6: as we keep saying, it's it's a decent deal for
- 1:43:36Speaker 6: a starting quarterback. Then he's tradable.
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: Dan of Virginia and Michigan shout out to Chris psa
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: Ferrara whenever he has to give us another show update
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: on Facebook because something is changed with the practice schedule.
- 1:43:50Speaker 2: I always think of Edelman's words to build Venovich in
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: the twenty fourteen to fifteen as Divisional game about the
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: rest earning their pay with THEMS. So I know, I
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: guess Chris is good about informing the community.
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: When there's Vinovich's drinking the water and he looks at Edelman,
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: he goes, I see I see no Christ Yeah, I saw.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: I saw that update today. I tried to take to
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: Twitter let people know.
- 1:44:17Speaker 2: Dan says, you don't seem to be that enthusiastic about
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: the return of Flowers to the team, which is reasonable
- 1:44:22Speaker 2: given his lack of impact since he left the Patriots.
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: Is it possible, though, that he's one of those players
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: who fits best in a particular system and he'll be
- 1:44:31Speaker 2: better with the Patriots, or maybe he'll be the defensive
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: equivalent of a super backup, given his versatility during his
- 1:44:37Speaker 2: last stint on the New England defensive line.
- 1:44:40Speaker 6: It's gotta be healthy.
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: It's healthy.
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: He was in the same system in Detroit and Miami.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: They had Patriots defensive coaches teaching the same kinds of systems.
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, he was not good in nineteen with Detroit.
- 1:44:52Speaker 6: He had the same exact year basically in nineteen in
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: Detroit as he had in eighteen with the Patriots. But
- 1:44:57Speaker 6: he's made I think he's played in eighteen of fifty
- 1:45:00Speaker 6: games over the last three years. So I don't think
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: it's about.
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: The lower body, upper body. What's his issue.
- 1:45:05Speaker 6: The last year it was his foot. I think he
- 1:45:07Speaker 6: broke a bone in his foot, this weird stuff.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: I think he played like four games. It was the
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: same thing though. I mean because the Patriots had him
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: in last year. I remember they were kicking the tires
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: on him and I didn't feel like he was healthy. Yeah,
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: So according.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: To I Live, do you think they won't be in
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: pads today?
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Right? I doubt it. I don't know. I don't know.
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know why I'm trying to speculate.
- 1:45:31Speaker 5: They're going to have a walk through tomorrow. So Why
- 1:45:33Speaker 5: wouldn't you be in pads today?
- 1:45:35Speaker 2: I don't know. They went pretty hard yesterday, you know
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: they had tackling drills and all that.
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: Yeah, but they did that last week too, and they
- 1:45:40Speaker 5: have pads two days.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: I would love it. I guess I'm just being a
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: pessimist because I'd love them to be in pats today.
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: But I don't.
- 1:45:45Speaker 5: I don't know the answer, but I wouldn't be stunned
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: either way. And well more to watch love it. No,
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: that was an off air thing, almost put on air.
- 1:45:54Speaker 5: I don't want to get anybody.
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: In trouble, uh, Jamel writes in a huge fan of
- 1:46:00Speaker 2: the broadcast out of New Jersey. My question for the
- 1:46:02Speaker 2: Patriots Nation team is the following, How optimistic are you
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: guys that the Patriots make a late splash trade for
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: position upgrades such as offensive line depth on a scale
- 1:46:14Speaker 2: from one to ten.
- 1:46:16Speaker 6: One being optimized.
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: If it's a splash trade, it's not for depth. If
- 1:46:21Speaker 5: you're making a splash trade, you're getting like Jonah Williams
- 1:46:24Speaker 5: and you're going to start them at tackle someone like that. Right, Yeah,
- 1:46:29Speaker 5: that's a splash.
- 1:46:30Speaker 6: I'm assuming ten is like, I'm optimistic that that will
- 1:46:33Speaker 6: happen right then, I'm putting it out about a two. Yeah,
- 1:46:37Speaker 6: I think Jonah Williams is pretty much the only guy
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: that maybe could be starting caliber for you at tackle
- 1:46:43Speaker 6: that's available or could be potentially available.
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: What do you have to give up? What do you have?
- 1:46:48Speaker 13: Like?
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: And I think splashes in the eye of the beholder too,
- 1:46:51Speaker 5: Like I think a lot of people would probably tell
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: you that signing Trade Flowers is a splash move, name
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: name brand, right, because everybody knows who he is and
- 1:46:57Speaker 5: he had success here, right. But my guess is they'll
- 1:47:01Speaker 5: add some they'll add more guys, and I wouldn't be surprised, Like,
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: what do you have to give up for him?
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: Right now?
- 1:47:06Speaker 5: He's fighting for a job in Cincinnati, like a mid rock.
- 1:47:10Speaker 5: Maybe it's one of those you give them a fifth
- 1:47:12Speaker 5: rounder and they give you a sixth rounder. You swap
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: spots on the fifth and sixth, And I don't think
- 1:47:16Speaker 5: it would cost a ton to get a guy.
- 1:47:17Speaker 6: It'd also be like an incentive based like if he
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: actually plays right and doesn't get hurt.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: How many times, too, do we have during cutdown weekend
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: that all of a sudden, you know it's happened a
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: couple of times that they go out and they get
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: all of a sudden, there's a guy that wasn't even
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: with them at Camp Thorty, Snap trade.
- 1:47:31Speaker 5: Claim, a guy off waivers somewhere.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: And that's like the kind of thing with Joona Williams,
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: like you were saying, like this is just you're gonna
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: cut him. We just want to make sure we get him.
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: So here's like, you know, a conditional seventh if he
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: pays for us, and we'll get him before cutdown day.
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: All right, we'll take a quick break and then we'll
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: wrap up the show.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: But before we do.

- 1:50:12Speaker 2: A few more minutes left to go in the show
- 1:50:14Speaker 2: before we head out toward practice. Practice officially starts around one.
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: Bill's going against Bill at twelve fifteen.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: I believe it is Bill at twelve.
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: That'll be on Patriots dot Com.
- 1:50:25Speaker 6: Out on the field, twelve thirty doesn't hold.
- 1:50:30Speaker 2: On, He'll show up at quarter to one anyway.
- 1:50:32Speaker 5: I don't want to give the wrong information. Yeah, Tuesday, Yes,
- 1:50:37Speaker 5: Evan is corrected as twelve thirty.
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: Two thirty, So that'll be live on Patriots dot Com. Yeah,
- 1:50:43Speaker 2: and then practice will start around one and then we'll
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: see it.
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: Seems like every year I forget what the heck the
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: schedule is because it's that weird period in between the

- 1:50:56Speaker 1: Monday kind of void. Assuming they're going to go to.
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: Have we found out if the have access after today.
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: I have not. Yeah, that's what That's what I was
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: getting at. I'm not sure. Is there a weird portion
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: where they close it to the public, but yes, I
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: have it.
- 1:51:08Speaker 5: They have done that occasionally in the past. I'm wondering if.
- 1:51:12Speaker 5: I don't think they did it last year. But I'm
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: wondering if because there are still four more open to
- 1:51:17Speaker 5: the media and the public in Green Bay and Tennessee,
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: like there's no need to do that, right, They could
- 1:51:23Speaker 5: just close it up and.
- 1:51:24Speaker 6: Well, it depends on who you ask, because there there
- 1:51:28Speaker 6: are media like guidelines or I wouldn't call them rules
- 1:51:32Speaker 6: because they're not really It's not like we have a
- 1:51:33Speaker 6: CBA for the media.
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: Are you saying if they didn't do that to be
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: local grousing.
- 1:51:40Speaker 6: There would be there would be grousing. There would be
- 1:51:42Speaker 6: there be grousing. Let's leave it at that.
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean there's going to be grousing. That's what
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: they do shirt. But I also would say, you know,
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: heading into training camp, you know, just looking at other teams,
- 1:51:54Speaker 5: you know, and they'll say, oh uh, you know, Washington
- 1:51:57Speaker 5: announced their open dates for training camp, but eight open
- 1:52:00Speaker 5: dates open to the public and the media or twelve
- 1:52:03Speaker 5: open dates for this team, you know, ten open dates.
- 1:52:05Speaker 5: So I don't think that would be sixteen open dates
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: to the media counting the four a lot. This is
- 1:52:12Speaker 5: today is twelve and there's four more to come. That's
- 1:52:15Speaker 5: a lot. Like I don't think that they quote unquote
- 1:52:17Speaker 5: would have to do anything right, you know, despite grouse
- 1:52:21Speaker 5: I agree with Evan. I think they'll be grouseing.
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: They don't have to do anything. But I think technically
- 1:52:27Speaker 6: we would still be in training camp, and that would
- 1:52:30Speaker 6: mean that those practices are supposed to be open to
- 1:52:33Speaker 6: the media. Whether or not they actually have to follow
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: that or those rules is a totally different desaise.
- 1:52:39Speaker 5: In along those lines, it is also possible that some
- 1:52:43Speaker 5: of these other ones that I just mentioned, that's when
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: they're closer to the public, and the media for all
- 1:52:49Speaker 5: I know, was still allowed to go for any of those, right,
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: you know, So there's a chance I would say that
- 1:52:54Speaker 5: they're probably not going to practice Friday or Saturday, Sunday
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: and Monday, you know, before they they're scheduled.
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: To go to Green Bay on Tuesday. I don't know yet.
- 1:53:04Speaker 5: I haven't heard, I think, because isn't it Wednesday Thursday?
- 1:53:07Speaker 5: Nice practices? Yeah, so they'll go on So they'll probably
- 1:53:10Speaker 5: go on Tuesday. They could even be a practice over
- 1:53:12Speaker 5: to the media on Tuesday before they go. If they
- 1:53:15Speaker 5: went and the no one knows when they're going, right, right,
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: my guess is they would leave at some point on Tuesday.
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: But yeah, I wouldn't be stunned if the media is invited.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: To watch a couple more practices.
- 1:53:26Speaker 5: I hope they do. The the media can go, but
- 1:53:30Speaker 5: what's limited to you know, Evan good Media. Yeah, the
- 1:53:33Speaker 5: good Media, the one one per outlet and get into
- 1:53:36Speaker 5: regular season mode.
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: That's the dream.
- 1:53:38Speaker 2: Reduce and Evan will be out there in Green Bay
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: for the joints. We don't know what time the practices
- 1:53:43Speaker 2: will be, but at some point one of you will
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: call in and give us an update, either before, you know,
- 1:53:48Speaker 2: after practice or during practice if the show go insides.
- 1:53:53Speaker 5: Like next a week from Thursday, right, you guys will
- 1:53:55Speaker 5: be on the practice field.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: Yeah, it's so they've been practicing at ten thirty in
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: the morning, which will be eleven eleven thirty here, so yeah,
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: we could We could probably call in like at the
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: end of after practice.
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: So that'd be great. We'll have live updates. Fred and
- 1:54:08Speaker 5: I will anchor the coverage here from Foxborough.
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Nice, it's Wolf Blitzer anchored the coverage. Yeah, I'm excited.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: It's I've never been to Green Bay, so it'll.
- 1:54:16Speaker 5: Be Green Bay cool. Like the whole Lambeau experience is cool.
- 1:54:19Speaker 6: Yeah, it's cool. The rest of Green Bay is well, yeah,
- 1:54:24Speaker 6: it's a cow town. But did Lambeau Going to Lamba
- 1:54:27Speaker 6: for the first time last year was a bucket list
- 1:54:30Speaker 6: for sure?
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: Yep.
