- 0:44[SPEAKER_06]: My name is Josh and I'm here as always with the man who meet if no introduction but we will introduce him anyway the captain Jack
- 0:56[SPEAKER_06]: Barry.
- 0:56[SPEAKER_06]: Jack, it is good to be with you today, my man.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_06]: How are you?
- 1:01[SPEAKER_07]: Why, why is your voice sound more made for radio today?
- 1:03[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_06]: I was kind of, I was wondering that too.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know if it's just, I don't know if it's just the day or if it's all the, the red bulls I've been drinking, but we're in a lower register today.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_06]: And I don't know why, but we're just gonna roll with it because, you know, it makes for some good radio.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_06]: But I think, I think, honestly, what I think it is, I think I'm just tired.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_06]: I woke up so yesterday I got to say I had a super bowl asks Sunday yesterday dude Lord's Day was fantastic so we had a it was awesome we had
- 1:38[SPEAKER_06]: a guest speaker shout out land in and Hannah Jones.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_06]: It landed on Twitter.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_06]: He's a reform Baptist missionary that they are gathering support to go to Spain.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_06]: Going to be missionaries in Spain do a lot of good good good good local church centered work.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_00]: up there.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_06]: So we had him and his wife come to Redeemer yesterday and he brought the word for us.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_06]: It was very good.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_06]: And then did a little presentation after word about their work.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_06]: And we're bringing him on as
- 2:13[SPEAKER_06]: One of the missionaries that we support, but we had a potluck for him, which was cool.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_06]: But we also, do you have drag races going on outside your house?
- 2:24[SPEAKER_06]: What is something wrong with?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_07]: Something that.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_07]: It's against a coma, Josh.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_06]: Just wrong with it.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_07]: If a firefight breaks out, it's just a COVID.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_06]: All right.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_06]: We're doing it live.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_06]: We're doing it live.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's fair.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_06]: But so that was awesome.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_06]: That's kind of how how things ended but we had baptism yesterday and man I I
- 2:49[SPEAKER_06]: something about baptism Sundays that just get me and it was it was bad because like we had like everything kind of lined up so we had three baptism so three of us elders did did baptisms and I got to baptize a lady that's been coming through our young adult group
- 3:11[SPEAKER_06]: that has just been growing in leaps and bounds in her faith and came to a baptism.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_06]: I would say Baptist convictions when it comes to baptism and wanted to be baptized upon a professional faith and I got to do that yesterday and dude I was I broke down like I'm a big softy I am like I I think
- 3:35[SPEAKER_06]: I don't even try to put on like a hard front like I don't I'm just I'm just I fall apart due to then I got up and I had to do the communion devotional right after it and I got up to the pulpit and I'm like this was not a good idea.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_05]: I was seriously dude.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_06]: I got up there and I'm like oh now I got to do communion
- 3:57[SPEAKER_06]: It was a full Sunday, great Sunday.
- 4:00[SPEAKER_06]: We ended up sending Pastor David on sabbatical as well.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_06]: So we prayed for him at the end of our service.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_06]: And yeah, do you just full day, full day, really great day.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_06]: But I think I just woke up really tired.
- 4:17[SPEAKER_06]: It's just like he was an emotional day, not in a bad way, just very full.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_06]: And I'm just putting together now.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_06]: We're starting second Timothy is the series that I'm going to be starting.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_06]: And the other pastors are going to be preaching as well.
- 4:33[SPEAKER_06]: And yeah, I'm looking forward to that.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_06]: Good day, but I'm tired.
- 4:38[SPEAKER_06]: All that to explain, possibly the lower register voice.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_06]: I'm not complaining.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_06]: I'll take it when I get it.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_06]: But Jack, my friend, how are you real quick before we hop into the Instagram?
- 4:53[SPEAKER_07]: We'll talk about it more.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_07]: Oh, the pod luck was stuff going on in my life.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_07]: And then, yeah, Lord's Day was good.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_07]: We would did a one off.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_07]: We'd been kind of doing just like,
- 5:07[SPEAKER_07]: summer one off kind of sermons and so it's kind of just kind of pulpit fill for the rest of summer because some of my pastors are kind of going on vacation and stuff like that throughout the summer and we had a really so we host a sports camp near our church at elementary school and we host kids there and we shared that gospel with them and stuff like that and so it was kind of a recap of how sports camp went
- 5:35[SPEAKER_07]: And then one of my pastors preached John, three, sixteen through three, twenty-one, I think.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_07]: I was doing security and communion and stuff like that.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_07]: And so, overall pretty good Sunday, pretty good Lord's Day.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_07]: It was kind of overcast down here, so it was nice and cool.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, hasn't been as hot this week, which has been really nice.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's been really nice.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_07]: But yeah, other than the the stuff that we'll talk about the paint on the Patreon, it's been going somewhat okay.
- 6:11[SPEAKER_07]: All things can still be considered.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_06]: That's right.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_06]: They're not quite ready to drop a drop, but yes, still in process, but it's good.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_06]: It's just tiring.
- 6:21[SPEAKER_06]: Anyway, all right, well, Jack, my friend, we are
- 6:25[SPEAKER_06]: continuing our series in reformed Liturgy, the importance of Liturgy, but before we do that, it is time for everyone's favorite segment.
- 6:38[SPEAKER_06]: Don't forget to eat your instant grams.
- 6:41[SPEAKER_05]: And those are the time you hold on waiting for.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_05]: The ordinary broadcast presents, don't forget to eat your instant grams.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_05]: With your host, Josh Loftus, on Jack Mary, and remember kids.
- 6:53[SPEAKER_05]: It's not heresy if you're believable, hard enough.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_06]: This is, don't forget to eat your instant grams.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_06]: And remember kids, it's not heresy if you believe it hard enough.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_06]: That's how it works.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_06]: Jack, I've got some great ones for you today.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_06]: Both of these ones are not so much, they're not so much local church centered this time.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_06]: It's not so much local church shenanigans.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_06]: I'm more introducing you yet again.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_06]: This is more like jack on culture, right?
- 7:24[SPEAKER_06]: Jack on Christian culture.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_06]: I'm introducing you to childhood of the conservative Christian.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_06]: If you are conservative Christian, you grew up in the eighties and the nineties.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_06]: Creeping into the two thousands, but primarily eighties and nineties.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_06]: These are the things that you had to deal with, okay?
- 7:46[SPEAKER_06]: So I have two of them for you today.
- 7:49[SPEAKER_06]: And as always, if you, those that are listening, we video these podcasts.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_06]: So if you'd like to see the video versions of these head on over to YouTube and you can watch our reactions to them as well as listen.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_06]: So Jack, my friend, have you ever been asked the question?
- 8:08[SPEAKER_06]: Can you skateboard for the Lord?
- 8:13[SPEAKER_02]: The lot of guys that can skateboard real good, but they're not doing it for the Lord.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_02]: So I skateboard for the Lord?
- 8:19[SPEAKER_02]: You do everything for the Lord.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: You mull along for the Lord.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_02]: Watch dishes for the Lord.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: And when you use the talented guys giving you, he's proud of you.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_02]: And that will make you feel better than a two hundred thousand dollars skateboard.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_02]: Well, now I can't wait to go skating.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_02]: Wanna show me some tricks?
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: Sure, I'll show you all kinds of tricks.
- 8:35[SPEAKER_02]: Come on.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_06]: First of all, who is this?
- 8:39[SPEAKER_06]: No, you're not to be introduced to Colby.
- 8:42[SPEAKER_06]: Colby was a fixture in the nineties Christians childhood.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, but can we can we first hold on?
- 8:55[SPEAKER_06]: There's about there's about twenty seconds left of this, but before can we respect?
- 9:00[SPEAKER_06]: Look at this guy's hair.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_06]: Like let's check this out.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_06]: The hair is on point.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_06]: Spite hair, right?
- 9:05[SPEAKER_06]: We're looking peak nineties in this video, man.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_06]: Peak nineties.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_06]: This is this is.
- 9:12[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, this brings back so much members.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_06]: Also, two hundred thousand dollar skateboard is that a thing?
- 9:18[SPEAKER_06]: Who is there?
- 9:20[SPEAKER_06]: Hold on.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_06]: I'm googling this is there a skate board he's got to be a boss in belishing two hundred thousand dollars.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_06]: No, I don't see anything.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, it's got to be in belishing.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_06]: It's got to be
- 9:39[SPEAKER_06]: Oh, there's a rare Pokemon skateboard that sells for twenty.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, well, we got that.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_06]: Anyway, let's go and finish this up.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_06]: Let's finish this up here.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_06]: Kind of trick.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_06]: Call me my computer.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, do you have a son that goes along with skateboarding?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: My pleasure.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: Don't play hide and seek from the horn who loves you.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: Don't play hide and seek from the horn who loves you.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: Don't play hide.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_05]: What?
- 10:10[SPEAKER_05]: I'm just...
- 10:12[SPEAKER_05]: Did I'll missed out.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_05]: I'll take my fist out.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_07]: So he didn't childhood with X man and team agent Ninja Turtles.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_07]: And he did the week that I'm sorry.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_06]: Well, speaking of speaking of a heathen childhood jack.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_06]: That is an excellent excellent segue into our next our next instant gram here.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_06]: This is what what what what could be called a a PSA of sorts.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: to help determine if someone you know is drawn to Satanism.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: Review these levels of Satanic involvement.
- 10:49[SPEAKER_01]: The fun and games level may include conversations, ego boosts, and possibly some initial interest in the subject.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: This level also includes the fantasy role playing games, which could lead into the second level, referred to as the Daablers.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_06]: the fantasy role playing games.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_06]: So they're talking about Dungeons and Dragons.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, that's what they're talking about.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_06]: And if you were a kid of the nineties, you were traumatized as I was to the focus on the family adventures in a lot of C. Episode called Castles and Caldrons in which
- 11:29[SPEAKER_06]: uh... two of the young characters uh... within uh... this town called audicy uh... dabbled in castles and cauldrons and in doing so summoned a demon to all my and all so my back the art of their dad's what was terrified no the amount of
- 11:51[SPEAKER_06]: Like, like, the Satan scare during the eighties and nineties was the Satanic period.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_06]: The Satanic panic, baby.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, let's continue.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: I have belief in Satanism or some serious interest.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: It is at this second level where warning signs of Satanic behavior may be apparent, such as a sudden bitterly antagonistic attitude towards family and religion.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_01]: A drastic decline in academic performance.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: A reclusive Satan is makes you stupid.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: Are they playing?
- 12:26[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:27[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:27[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:28[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:28[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:29[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:30[SPEAKER_03]: Are they playing?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:31[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:32[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:33[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:34[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:34[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:34[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:35[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:36[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:36[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:37[SPEAKER_06]: Are they playing?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Are they playing?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_01]: Are they playing?
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: Are they playing?
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: Are they playing?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_06]: Well, I'm in trouble.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_06]: I think I might die.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_06]: I think I don't messed up.
- 12:49[SPEAKER_06]: I think I don't messed up, dude.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_06]: I think ninety percent of my music consumption is infirmable.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_06]: Almost to the point of addiction.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: When one or more of these warning signs are evident, you should look further for ritual items such as a pentagram or other satanic symbols, black or red robes,
- 13:15[SPEAKER_01]: a decorative dagger or knife.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_01]: A chalice or goblet.
- 13:21[SPEAKER_01]: Black candles.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: A personal diary with a black cover which is called a book of shadows and copies of publications such as the satanic Bible and the satanic rituals.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_01]: And possibly a small makeshift altar.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: If you discover items such as these, experts advise you contact your local law enforcement agency at once.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_06]: If you find, if you find, what the cops are gonna do about it.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_06]: A goblet and a dagger in your son's bedroom make sure to call the cops on him.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_06]: My son is listening to a lot of Aussie Osborne and I found a sword, a goblet and a cool cut in his cupboard.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_06]: I don't know what to do.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_06]: Call the cops.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_06]: Call the cops.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_06]: Put your lemon jail.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_06]: Well, ladies and gentlemen, that has been, don't forget to eat your Instagrams.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_06]: We really enjoy those Jack.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_06]: Welcome to eighties and nineties Christian culture, man.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_06]: You missed out.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_06]: You missed out.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_07]: I don't think I did.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_07]: I don't think I did.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_07]: All right.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_07]: I think I'm okay.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_06]: Well, Jack, it is time for us to continue in our liturgy series.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_06]: I've been really been enjoying this series.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_06]: Just obviously it's
- 14:43[SPEAKER_06]: local church focused, but it's also something that I really nerd out about.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_06]: I love
- 14:48[SPEAKER_06]: liturgical services.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_06]: And the reasonings for them, the, I think the, the good that they do for the people of God on the Lord's day, the gospel centered way that they, that they, even, even seeing the gospel with in the elements of service within the order of service.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_06]: I love it.
- 15:14[SPEAKER_06]: It's something that's really, really
- 15:16[SPEAKER_06]: really cool to see and something that I really enjoy talking about.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_06]: And we have been kind of working through the different elements of a liturgical service.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_06]: Now, not every liturgical service is going to look the same.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_06]: Obviously, some are going to have more elements than others.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_06]: But these are kind of the what I have found to be the most common elements of a liturgical service, right?
- 15:39[SPEAKER_06]: So we've talked about
- 15:42[SPEAKER_06]: called a worship right reading of the word confession of sin was last week and this week we are talking about the assurance of pardon now this aspect this this I guess element if you will of a liturgical service
- 16:05[SPEAKER_06]: is among one of my favorites.
- 16:08[SPEAKER_06]: I obviously love all of the different parts of liturgical service, but the assurance of pardon is very special to me.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_06]: It has a very special place in my heart.
- 16:19[SPEAKER_06]: And that's because of the way that it reminds the congregation, reminds the individual.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_06]: of the goodness of the gospel.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_06]: Now, obviously, all of the elements are supposed to do this.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_06]: The proclamation of Christ in his gospel is the center point of what we do.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_06]: It's what we preach, it's what we pray, it's what we sing, it's what we confess.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_06]: But the assurance of pardon is at its core.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_06]: a proclamation of the work of Jesus Christ and the response that we are to have to that work.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_06]: And it is a correct response.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_06]: It is a correct outflow, if you will, of the confession of sin that we talked about last week.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_06]: I think we mentioned last week and it bears repeating that no true confession of sin is complete.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_06]: If it does not culminate with the assurance of the pardon that we have in the gospel through the work of Jesus Christ.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_06]: Otherwise, our confessions of sins are law only, not law that leads to grace.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_06]: And that's ultimately what makes the log good is that it points us to the goodness of the gospel.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_06]: But if it was law only in our hope, uh, lied in law only in the assurance of our pardon lied in our ability to confess hard enough, right, uh, or to to keep the law well enough, then there is no hope.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_06]: And that this is, this is gospel one, oh, one.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_06]: This is the log gospel distinction that is so important to remember and to confess.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_06]: So when we talk about a biblical confession, what does it mean to truly confess your sins?
- 18:09[SPEAKER_06]: I mean, we got into a lot of that last week, but an aspect that I think is lost on a lot of people.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_06]: And when I kind of was brought into this understanding, you really changed the way Jack that I saw confession of sin, the reason for it, the purpose of it, right?
- 18:27[SPEAKER_06]: And especially why it's important within the corporate Lord's day service.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_06]: is that a true confession of sin must have as its outflow, as its response and assurance of the pardon that we have in Jesus Christ, a reminding that your sins that you have just confessed have been pardoned, have been cleansed, have been covered over by the blood of Jesus Christ.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_06]: and it's not because of your confession that they have been so it is because of the grace of God and your confession just like we confess the sixteen eighty nine it's a confession of truth it is just that it is a confession of the truth that my sin is horrible
- 19:16[SPEAKER_06]: My sin makes me worthy of death.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_06]: My sin required the death of a Savior.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_06]: But what I also confess is that sin has been covered.
- 19:25[SPEAKER_06]: And I have been cleansed.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_06]: I have been made righteous.
- 19:28[SPEAKER_06]: And I stand before the eyes of a holy God.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_06]: a clean and accepted because of Christ.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_06]: So properly defined, I mean, there is no real definition of a assurance of pardon out there, but something that I kind of put together.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_06]: And again, I had the, I had the,
- 19:48[SPEAKER_06]: the blessing of being able to write a little booklet on the confessioner sin insurance pardon for our church.
- 19:54[SPEAKER_06]: And I thought it was, it was, it was a really, it was a really cool experience, really kind of digging into these things and you know, the reasonings for them.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_06]: But a good definition that I have found for an assurance of pardon is this.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_06]: It's, it's, assurance of pardon is a public declaration of the work of Christ through his death and resurrection on our behalf.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_06]: the effects and consequences of that work and the assurance that work brings to the center.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_06]: So, Jack, as we talk about the assurance of pardon, it's place within a liturgical service.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_06]: Are you with me in that this, this aspect of the liturgical service is one that that kind of hits hits close at your heart as well?
- 20:43[SPEAKER_06]: Have you had much experience with this, this kind of topic of of the assurance of pardon?
- 20:52[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think that I kind of had to, I think the first time I got
- 21:02[SPEAKER_07]: exposed to assurance of pardon.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_07]: Um, it was, it kind of had to ruminate on me a little bit in and letter G when it was going on, uh, primarily because when assurance of pardon happens, um, I think it's tough.
- 21:22[SPEAKER_07]: Maybe when you're, how can I say this?
- 21:26[SPEAKER_07]: When you're in a church and you have visitors,
- 21:30[SPEAKER_07]: who may not be Christians at all.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_07]: And they just do everything by the book, just to fit in.
- 21:38[SPEAKER_07]: Sometimes I've seen assurance of pardon where it's like confession of sin happens, then assurance of pardon happens.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_07]: And it's like sometimes the pastor who is leading that part of the liturgy will say, everybody's, you know, if you, if this is true of you, stand up.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_07]: Now, I've seen it to where a majority, if not, a lot of people stand up and it's difficult sometimes.
- 22:06[SPEAKER_07]: I mean, this goes back to even like,
- 22:10[SPEAKER_07]: Josh and I have had conversations about how do you fence the table?
- 22:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, Lord's Day supper table.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, just which is coming up.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_07]: That's coming up.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_07]: Which there might be not believers who are who are not partaking in a correct manner of the Lord's supper.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I think that.
- 22:32[SPEAKER_07]: But if we're going to back to like the
- 22:40[SPEAKER_07]: Like the thought that everybody in the Lord's Day service is a believer, which honestly, like at my Lord's Day service, like I know like who are the visitors or at least who seems out of place.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_07]: And it's like, okay, but if the Lord's Day service is for Christians, Christians are gonna respond to that.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_06]: Yes.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_07]: And in a right manner versus other people versus non-believers.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_07]: Non-believers might follow to an extent, but it's not to the extent that it's a natural response that we see for the believer.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_07]: Sure.
- 23:22[SPEAKER_07]: So, yeah.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_07]: I will say assurance a pardon had to rumenate on me.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_06]: yeah quite a bit yeah um well and what's it what's interesting like that that brings up a really important point is is just as we talked about with a confession of some last week their
- 23:40[SPEAKER_06]: is a difference, obviously, with those of us that are Protestant in our faith, how we approach something like a confession of sin and assurance of pardon, because often people think of a confession of sin.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_06]: They think of a confessional.
- 23:55[SPEAKER_06]: They think of confessing your sins to a priest.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_06]: It's the sacrament of confession, things of that sort, and it requires a priest to not only hear your confession, but then to speak the pardon over you after penance has been paid, right?
- 24:11[SPEAKER_06]: And that's another difference with our understanding of an assurance of pardon.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_06]: Is that when the pastor
- 24:22[SPEAKER_06]: is up front after the congregation has corporately confessed their sins and the pastor goes through and proclaims the assurance of pardon to the congregation.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_06]: He is not doing so from a position of authority
- 24:37[SPEAKER_06]: in as much and what I mean by that is as one that holds innate authority to pardon the sins that we're just confessed.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_06]: What is being confessed by the pastor is that your sins have already been pardoned.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_06]: by the one that does hold the authority to do so.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_06]: Namely Jesus Christ through his work, right?
- 25:02[SPEAKER_06]: So it's very important to understand is that when we talk about this, this element of a liturgical service of the of the Assurance of pardon, the pastor is not saying, okay, you have all confessed now, your sins have been forgiven, congratulations.
- 25:18[SPEAKER_06]: He is saying, be reminded
- 25:22[SPEAKER_06]: and be assured, rest assured, that those sins that you have just confessed have been pardoned by Christ, and he promises to do so again and again and again because of his faithfulness, because of his goodness, his long suffering, his grace and mercy, not some inherent power or authority that is given to the elders to do so, right?
- 25:48[SPEAKER_06]: If the elders job to proclaim and to point,
- 25:52[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_06]: We do not have innate authority in another ourselves.
- 25:57[SPEAKER_06]: So that's important to understand is that we do not see ourselves as the priest that it is necessary then to proclaim and to give pardon as if we were in a place of some, you know,
- 26:14[SPEAKER_06]: mediator.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_06]: We are not the mediator.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_06]: We are Christ, right, right, right, right, right.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_06]: We are Christ.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_06]: Excuse me.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_06]: Christ is our is is our mediator.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_06]: He is the one that stands before us and the Father.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_06]: So that's very important to understand when we are when we are engaging within the assurance of pardon is
- 26:37[SPEAKER_06]: what it is saying, who it's for, right?
- 26:42[SPEAKER_06]: And what it is indeed proclaiming.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_06]: Something that I wrote here is
- 26:51[SPEAKER_06]: But we are assured that the standing we have before God will never change because it has been built upon the foundation that Christ has laid.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_06]: John chapter ten verse twenty eight says, I give them eternal life and they shall never perish.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_06]: No one will snatch them out of my hand.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_06]: And we are assured that not only have we been saved from the consequences of sin, but also we have been saved to God Himself.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_06]: And this is a really large
- 27:19[SPEAKER_06]: portion and aspect that's important to understand and talk about when we talk about the assurance of part right is it's not just proclaiming the things that you have been cleansed up right that you have been pardoned from your sins although it's very true it is also proclaiming what now has been given to you
- 27:40[SPEAKER_06]: in in in Christ, right?
- 27:44[SPEAKER_06]: So when we talk about the importance jack of being saved from something and saved to something, what are we talking about there?
- 27:54[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, you could say this is like the Great Exchange kind of language.
- 28:00[SPEAKER_07]: You are saved from sin to righteousness or you save from death to eternal life.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_07]: So like that kind of language.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_07]: is pretty important because it shows your Christ is substituting himself for you not only he's you're safe to righteous his righteousness and he is taking upon himself your your sin and the penalty of you sinning without without belief or trust or faith in him and so
- 28:40[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, I think that there's an exchange language.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_07]: There's imputation language as well too.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_07]: Chris righteousness has been imputed upon us as he has taken upon himself, our sin.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_07]: Stuff like that is really important.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_07]: I think that there's an important thing as well too.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_07]: So I said this in our lords.
- 29:05[SPEAKER_07]: So when we gather on the lords table, we have like five tables usually at my
- 29:10[SPEAKER_07]: church that we do like the Lord supper at and we gather in like big groups usually okay take a chunk of the congregation and they go to one table and then they go to four other tables but I was describing this the other day with Martin Luther and how like if you or to summarize Martin Luther's what would be his like theme in the Reformation
- 29:38[SPEAKER_07]: And I remember a, a theologian said, if you were to take Martin Luther's like three words of his theology, what would they be?
- 29:49[SPEAKER_07]: And as like an anthem or a theme.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_07]: And he said, he said this.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_07]: He said, okay, all right.
- 29:55[SPEAKER_07]: You, he said the theme that you can take away from Martin Luther's theology during the reformation is this.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_07]: You are accepted.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_07]: You no longer bear God's wrath or punishment or our cast out of his presence because, and this is the language that Luther uses, this holy alien righteousness comes to you through grace.
- 30:26[SPEAKER_07]: And that alien righteousness, you're able to stand in that.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_07]: That's the Lord's grace and his favor on your life in a way in which, you know, usually we think of favor as very monetary, but like the Lord's favor is absolutely his grace being put upon you for the purpose that you would be a part of his bride, the church.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I say that a lot because when people come to the Lord's supper, usually it's because us in America have not done a service to the Lord's supper by prepping people what it means to be.
- 31:11[SPEAKER_07]: When it means to go in the Lord's in the presence of the Lord at the Lord's supper at the table.
- 31:18[SPEAKER_07]: But yeah, I would say that
- 31:21[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, you are accepted.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, which are those are some of the toughest words that you can ever say.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_07]: Because on one part you can't be hokey about it.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_07]: And on the other part, and on the other part, it is very, it hits you to know that you are now accepted in the Lord's presence because of the work of Jesus.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_06]: Well, and I would say that I would say this, and I think this has to do with kind of, you know, obviously different backgrounds and upbringings and context play a lot into this, right?
- 32:00[SPEAKER_06]: But I'd say for a lot of people, and I fall into this camp, those words are much harder for me to hear than to say, because, like, especially those of us in the reformed camp, we're really good at talking about how sinful we are, how depraved we are, how lost we are, right?
- 32:22[SPEAKER_06]: And again, rightly so.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_06]: Of course, all those things are true.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_06]: Amen.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_06]: Amen.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_06]: All of those things,
- 32:28[SPEAKER_06]: are true, but it seems that there is so much of an emphasis placed on our depravity.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_06]: And it results in not as much of an emphasis placed upon the acceptance that we have in Christ.
- 32:50[SPEAKER_06]: and whether that comes from more, you know, fundamentalist backgrounds or, you know, overly conservative backgrounds.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_06]: I think, you know, there's, there's a lot you could point to with that.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_06]: But I think for a lot of people, truly believing the gospel is difficult in that, you know, I believe, you know, I'm a sinner.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_06]: I believe Jesus died to save my sins.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_06]: I believe he is, he is,
- 33:19[SPEAKER_06]: He is the only way to salvation, like all of that got under my belt.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_06]: But when you start using language like acceptance, when you start using language like God sees you and he loves you.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_06]: When you start using language, like God looks on you with delight and with pleasure.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_06]: That's when it starts getting more difficult.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_06]: And I think for a lot of us myself included for the longest time, we did not allow the gospel to creep into the darkness that it needed to.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_06]: Right.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_06]: The gospel shines light into the darkness of our souls, the darkness of our hearts and our minds.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_06]: And I think that there are places in our hearts that
- 34:17[SPEAKER_06]: have been boarded up for so long for so many reasons that are so dark.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_06]: Not that the gospel cannot overcome those things, but we don't apply the gospel to those places the way that we should.
- 34:31[SPEAKER_06]: And this understanding Jack of knowing, of finally coming to the realization, and you know what did it for me?
- 34:38[SPEAKER_06]: Obviously was the Lord in his spirits, right?
- 34:40[SPEAKER_06]: Obviously were, there's the good Calvinist caveat, right?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_06]: The Lord used a particular book, and I have given it to many in our church who have struggled with the same things that I have.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_06]: And the book is called the imperfect disciple by Jared Wilson.
- 34:59[SPEAKER_06]: That book,
- 35:01[SPEAKER_06]: the Lord used to open my eyes to how deep the love of the Father goes because of the work of His Son.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_06]: Because for the longest time, I viewed my salvation, my sanctification, my standing with God.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_06]: It kind of went something like this, right?
- 35:22[SPEAKER_06]: God is the one who chose me.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_06]: He saved me.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_06]: It was all the work of Christ.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_06]: Nothing of me because I'm totally depraved and I can't choose him.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_06]: That's true.
- 35:33[SPEAKER_06]: I confess that after salvation occurs the work of keeping
- 35:42[SPEAKER_06]: And keeping the standard of that is now on me.
- 35:47[SPEAKER_06]: And I don't know if I would ever theologically confess that, but I practically did in my life that I viewed God's continuing love, his continuous pleasure with me, based on my performance.
- 36:03[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, and depending on how I performed that day, whether I was good or bad, the acceptance and the love of God, the anger of God was on a sliding scale, right?
- 36:16[SPEAKER_06]: And when I was in sin, God was angry with me.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_06]: And who's wrathful toward me?
- 36:22[SPEAKER_06]: When I finally confessed that sin, and I gave it, I gave it to the Lord, then he was happy with me again.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_06]: And that's a damnable life.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_06]: And that understanding of the gospel really affected my assurance for years.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_06]: And the Lord in His grace opened my eyes to understand that the standing that I have with Him
- 36:54[SPEAKER_06]: The assurance of my pardon, if you will, is not based on my performance day to day.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_06]: It's based upon the covenant that God made with Himself that He would send one that would save a people, reconcile those people, be the substitute and the mediator for those people for all eternity.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_06]: And when God looks at me,
- 37:24[SPEAKER_06]: He sees Christ standing before me, mediating for me to him and saying, Lord, because I have bought this one with my blood, when you look at them, when you see them and when you listen to them, you look at me, you see me because of the covenant that we have made.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_06]: And the Lord says, yes, let it be done.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_06]: And Jack, when I finally came to understand how deep the gospel goes.
- 38:07[SPEAKER_06]: It changed the way that I viewed my sanctification.
- 38:11[SPEAKER_06]: It changed the way that I viewed, it changed the way that I viewed the gospel.
- 38:14[SPEAKER_06]: And for the longest time, I was believing like three quarters of it.
- 38:17[SPEAKER_06]: It's like, okay, the gospel gets you into heaven, but you know, you want to make sure you go to, you want to make sure that you go to heaven with God happy with you.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_06]: And that's on you.
- 38:27[SPEAKER_06]: Right?
- 38:27[SPEAKER_06]: Okay.
- 38:30[SPEAKER_06]: And yeah.
- 38:31[SPEAKER_06]: And again, theologically, I don't think I would have ever said that, but practically that's where I was.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_06]: And this understanding of the assurance of pardon that I have in Christ and truly the depth of that, man, it changed everything and it gave me so much more joy and so much more peace in place of just this work and this striving to, you know, try to be worthy of the salvation that I had been given.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_06]: You knew this flash, you're never going to be worthy of it.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_06]: You never are, right?
- 39:04[SPEAKER_06]: Now does that mean that that applies pulses?
- 39:06[SPEAKER_06]: We send the grace may abound?
- 39:08[SPEAKER_06]: No, no one's saying that.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_06]: No Christian is actually saying that.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_06]: But I guess that's the final thing, Jack, and maybe you can speak to this too, because I just did is I think one of the things that a true biblical assurance a part should do, both individually and corporately in the Lord's Day service, is that it should, it should create rest.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_06]: in the believer's soul, where there is turmoil.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_06]: It should create a spirit of rest and assurance that the foundation of your salvation, the foundation of God's pleasure and love with you, is unshakable.
- 39:51[SPEAKER_06]: Because it's not based on your performance, it's based on the work of Christ.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, part of that, I think that's probably the biggest thing of why we do, you know, I've talked, you know, several different times about my local church and doing a thing called the gospel welcome.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_07]: It's based off of a welcome that tent Avenue Presbyterian church did in Philadelphia where James Montgomery, boy, sexually used to do this as well too.
- 40:22[SPEAKER_07]: And so, and it's, and it's identity from different parts of the gospels, but part of it was the main lead-off was to those who are weary in need of rest.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_07]: which crisis that a lot.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_07]: Christ talks about that a lot in Matthew, particularly.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_07]: All of those who are weary and need of rest come to me and I will give it to you.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_07]: You know, you know, take my Yoke upon you.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_07]: It's a light.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_07]: So yeah, I think that is very, I mean, it's correct of what you're saying because like think of
- 41:04[SPEAKER_07]: If you are a, if you're a first century Jew living in the time of Jesus,
- 41:10[SPEAKER_07]: and he is proclaiming against the Pharisees, these laws and the interpretation of the law, and that you are not actually following the law correctly.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_07]: And Jesus says, no, that's not correct.
- 41:28[SPEAKER_07]: And rebutes them and rebukes and reproves them and
- 41:34[SPEAKER_07]: There's way stronger language that comes along with that, which is the woes, which are almost like curses in a sense.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_07]: So, yeah, I think that Jesus is trying to through his part and give us rest.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_07]: And I don't think, and then here's the thing too, that so often when we hear the words rest, because we even think of that on Sabbath, like during whether you think Sunday is the new Sabbath or not, the new Christian Sabbath.
- 42:10[SPEAKER_06]: But we prefer the time of the Lord's Day, but yes, that I have here and over there.
- 42:15[SPEAKER_07]: But when we think about God resting on the seventh day, right?
- 42:21[SPEAKER_07]: We think that he's tired.
- 42:24[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, that's all for the presentation.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_07]: And that he needs a nap from all the creation stuff, right?
- 42:29[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 42:29[SPEAKER_07]: The problem is, is that rest, if you look at the way that that the imagery and the theme of rest is used when God creates, it is tied to him, he's, he's not, he's not really stopping anything.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_07]: He's just,
- 42:48[SPEAKER_07]: He's ruling actually.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_07]: So the picture that you should see is after God was done creating all of this, he sat upon his throne.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_07]: Maybe like a better interpretation of rest.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_06]: And his provision didn't stop.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_06]: His sustaining of the universe didn't stop.
- 43:07[SPEAKER_06]: His sovereignty over it didn't stop.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_07]: So just as like, and this is language that's used throughout the epistles, like we are God's co-ears, he wants us to rest with him.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_07]: in a way in which even Paul talks about like you are co-ears and you know, and the heavenly realms and stuff like that.
- 43:29[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_07]: So I think there's a dynamic to it that helps us understand our identity and Christ a little bit better when Jesus says, you know, I'm giving you rest.
- 43:43[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_06]: Yep.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_07]: He's not, he's not saying go take an app or go lay down or something like that.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_07]: He's saying, you know, come to me.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_07]: Because I am the actual true object of your faith.
- 43:56[SPEAKER_07]: Yep.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_07]: I'm the true person.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_07]: I am the true God of your faith.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_07]: Not these, you know, two-bit amateur hour interpreters called the Pharisees.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_07]: Right.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_07]: Yep, or the lawyer is in stuff like that.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_06]: So that's exactly right.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_06]: And what that does is as we'll see in a couple weeks, especially when we talk about the Lord's Supper, this understanding of rest and the part in that we have in Christ should affect the way that we take the Lord's Supper.
- 44:29[SPEAKER_06]: Do you view the Lord's Supper as something that you need to make sure that you are, you have,
- 44:36[SPEAKER_06]: Like, punish yourself enough to be worthy of it.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_06]: Do I feel guilty enough to be worthy of taking the Lord's supper?
- 44:43[SPEAKER_06]: Have I flogged myself enough, right?
- 44:47[SPEAKER_06]: Or is the Lord's supper a source of provision and strength?
- 44:53[SPEAKER_06]: And a proclamation that, yeah, indeed you are a sinner.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_06]: Indeed you have weakness and frailty.
- 45:00[SPEAKER_06]: So come receive strength.
- 45:03[SPEAKER_06]: in the elements, come receive strength in what these per claim.
- 45:06[SPEAKER_06]: It affects the way that you view and you approach the table, right?
- 45:11[SPEAKER_06]: And that's obviously, we will get into that, but something that I love about the liturgical services is how
- 45:19[SPEAKER_06]: They move in and out from one another, and especially this one, this confession of sin and assurance of pardon, having a correct understanding of our position and standing before God.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_06]: affects the way that we observe the sacraments and take them.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_06]: Yeah, as they show.
- 45:40[SPEAKER_06]: So, Jack, I am looking forward to continuing our Lord's Day liturgical series.
- 45:48[SPEAKER_06]: It's been a lot of fun.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_06]: And I think we'll wrap this one up here with the assurance of pardon.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_06]: And look forward to next week.
- 45:57[SPEAKER_06]: Jack, my friend, once you get us out of here, bud.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah, if you appreciate Josh and I series here on Liturgy on the elements of Liturgy and even just tying this back into the local church and how this ties back into the believer's life with the local church being the center of the believer's life and you want to know more or your curious
