- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37But know this, Timothy, know that in the last.
- 0:41Days. Perilous times will come.
- 0:45So he's warning Timothy that all these things that I prepared you
- 0:49to do, you need to have these things.
- 0:52You need to be walking in these things so that when these
- 0:54perilous times come, you won't. Fall by the wayside.
- 0:58You won't be deceived. You won't be taken by the
- 1:02trickery of other men. You won't give.
- 1:05Up or give out, but you'll be. Able to stand.
- 1:09No fighter steps into the ring without first preparing for the
- 1:12fight. No soldier steps foot on enemy
- 1:15soil without first training for battle.
- 1:18Even with preparation and training, some endeavors are
- 1:21perilous. It's risky to engage in these
- 1:24things at all, to attempt to do so without being equipped.
- 1:27It's just plain foolishness. In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:31shares with you that although the days you live in are
- 1:34perilous, there are things you can do to prepare yourself for
- 1:39the fight. These are things you can do to
- 1:41equip yourself for battle. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:45Book of Second Timothy, Chapter 3, with today's edition of
- 1:49Living Waters of Grace. Just to go back and give a a
- 1:52quick recap we're. Talking about the perilous
- 1:55times, we're talking about times of affliction.
- 1:59We're talking about stressful times, dangerous times,
- 2:02hazardous times, fierce times. As the writer says.
- 2:06These are times. That are fierce.
- 2:09And we know that join the whole chapter 2 or most.
- 2:12Of chapter 2 that Paul. As he's speaking to his young
- 2:15son in the faith, Timothy. He is.
- 2:18Adequately preparing him. For these last days.
- 2:22I remember when I was young and when I would.
- 2:24Hear the older people pray. You know, they would always end
- 2:27the prayer and please help us in these last and evil days.
- 2:32And I never really understood what that meant.
- 2:34Last days I understood. But evil days, Why are they
- 2:37evil? And as we begin to study the
- 2:39word. Of the God, we see why this
- 2:41called the. Last and.
- 2:42Evil days, as Paul calls it. There are.
- 2:44Perilous times. Which is evil or wicked days?
- 2:49And what we remember from last week, we know that Paul took
- 2:53time to prepare Timothy to function or to do ministry in
- 3:00these last days, and he taught them things Like he said,
- 3:04Timothy, you need to endure. Hardship as a good soldier.
- 3:08And he also told him, he said you need to compete or be
- 3:12disciplined to compete as an athlete.
- 3:15You need to have the the the discipline of an athlete so that
- 3:19you can do exercise, not just. For the body, but exercise the
- 3:24spirit and. Then he also talked with him
- 3:27about being a hard working farmer.
- 3:29That he should. Be a hard working farmer that he
- 3:31should work diligently in ministry and then last but not
- 3:36least, he said Timothy, you also need to be diligent in your.
- 3:39Study of the word so that you rightly divide the word of
- 3:45truth. And as he goes into these last
- 3:48times and he begins to. Talk about these false.
- 3:50Prophets and the. Character of the false.
- 3:53Prophets and the the the. Unbelievers of that particular.
- 3:56Time and how depraved that they will become.
- 4:01The things that we're seeing right now, these things are
- 4:03going to increase and get increasingly.
- 4:05Bad as we get. Closer to the return.
- 4:08Of our Lord. And he even tells Timothy some
- 4:12things that he can do in order to prepare for that time and
- 4:16over in chapter 2, verse 22. He says flee also youthful
- 4:20lusts. And pursue righteousness, faith,
- 4:23love, and peace with those who call on the Lord.
- 4:27Out of a pure heart. He goes on and he says don't get
- 4:30into. Disputes with people.
- 4:31Timothy over words and and and and arguing about things that
- 4:35have no eternal value. It's not important.
- 4:39Those things are distractions. And he said that the man of God
- 4:43does not strive, the man of God does not get into arguments.
- 4:47The man of God does not quarrel, but he's gentle and he with
- 4:51humility, correct those who are in opposition.
- 4:55But then he comes to. Chapter 3 he.
- 4:57Says, but know this. But know this, Timothy, know
- 5:01that in the. Last days, Perilous times.
- 5:06Will come. So he's warning Timothy that all
- 5:10these things that I prepared you to do, you need to have these
- 5:14things. You need to be walking in these
- 5:15things so that when these perilous times come, you won't.
- 5:19Fall by the wayside. You won't be deceived.
- 5:22You won't be taken by the trickery of other men.
- 5:26You won't give. Up or give out, but you'll be
- 5:29able. To stand in the.
- 5:31Perilous times. This is also a warning to us.
- 5:34You know, the more I read this, the more it actually speaks to
- 5:37me, and it speaks to. All of us about.
- 5:40Being prepared as things continue to get worse and we.
- 5:43See it we. See the news we.
- 5:45Hear the reports. We see the things that are going
- 5:47on in government. We see the things that are going
- 5:49in our own neighborhoods. Things are becoming
- 5:52increasingly. Worse, as we are in the last
- 5:55days, the last days is. Anytime between the time that.
- 5:58Jesus walked this earth. And he ascended.
- 6:01To be with the Father. Until he returns.
- 6:04That is the last. Days so we need to be.
- 6:07Prepared. And as we go.
- 6:08Through these. These different characteristics,
- 6:11it's actually about 19 of them and we went through a number of
- 6:14them last week and today I am endeavoring.
- 6:18To be able to. Get to verse 9, but we're going
- 6:21to start with the word unthankful.
- 6:22We left off that. Disobedient to parents and I
- 6:24think. We exhausted it.
- 6:26But I want to get to the word unthankful.
- 6:28He. Says at that time, not only
- 6:30would there be and I'm going to start back at the beginning, he
- 6:32said for men will be. Lovers of themselves.
- 6:35And that. Is what kicks off this whole all
- 6:37the other characteristics. It is the.
- 6:39Overarching sin that brings to birth or brings to life all of
- 6:44these other sins in between, he said that men will be lovers of
- 6:47themselves, they'll be lovers of money, they'll be.
- 6:50Boasters they'll be. Proud.
- 6:52They'll be blasphemers. They'll be disobedient to
- 6:55parents and they will be unthankful, unholy, unloving,
- 6:59unforgiving slanderers without self-control.
- 7:03Brutal. Despisers of good traitors.
- 7:06Headstrong, haughty lovers of. Pleasure.
- 7:09Rather than lovers of God and I'm going.
- 7:11To stop right there. And I just want to go.
- 7:14Back to talk a little bit. About these things.
- 7:16As we go through. So he says I'm thankful.
- 7:20And that just simply means that they are going to be ungrateful.
- 7:22Men will be ungrateful, and that is due to their arrogance and
- 7:27their selfishness. When we are selfish and
- 7:29arrogant, we're not grateful. We're not thankful.
- 7:31We think we're entitled to these things.
- 7:34That people do for us, we think. We're entitled.
- 7:36For what God does for us. And even Jesus himself was
- 7:39thankful. He thanked, he went up, and he
- 7:41thanked God when he went into prayer before he.
- 7:44Ate he thanked God. He told him when he was at the
- 7:47tell me, he said, Lord, I thank you.
- 7:50I thank you. So Jesus was.
- 7:52Always in a thankful state of mind to the Father.
- 7:57And we should be that way. In fact, it's not that we're
- 8:01entitled to anything, but God gives us things out of his own
- 8:04heart, but those in that particular time as we get.
- 8:07To the last days. They're going to become more and
- 8:09more unthankful and and ungrateful, and that is against
- 8:15God's Word in Ephesians 5 and 20, he says giving thanks.
- 8:18Always for all things to God the Father.
- 8:22In the name. Of our Lord Jesus Christ, he
- 8:25said for all. Things for everything.
- 8:28That we receive. Everything that we go through,
- 8:31give them thanks. And then at First Thessalonians
- 8:345 and 18, he says in everything, give thanks.
- 8:37That means in every situation, in every circumstance, not only
- 8:41in our mountaintop. Experiences, but.
- 8:42Give them thanks in our Valley experiences.
- 8:45Give them thanks when we're doing well, but give them thanks
- 8:47when we're also struggling. Give them thanks when things are
- 8:51going great in our lives, but also give them thanks.
- 8:54For all of the trials that we go through, because he's always.
- 8:57Promised to be. With us.
- 8:59And when he's. With us.
- 9:00We know we're not alone, he says.
- 9:02Give them thanks. And it's interesting because in
- 9:05First Thessalonians Chapter 5 and 18 now people.
- 9:07Always ask Well, will is the will of God.
- 9:09There's several. Places in the Bible.
- 9:11Where he will say, this is the will of God, this is.
- 9:13One of them, this is one of them and everything give thanks for.
- 9:18This is the will. Of God in.
- 9:20Christ Jesus, for who? For you, for all of us.
- 9:26To give thanks, he says we're going to be unholy and that
- 9:29unholy really, you know, the Bible tells us all these things
- 9:31really go against scripture that.
- 9:33These that the that. We're going to start to see in
- 9:35the last. Days, which is why we should
- 9:37also. Do an inventory.
- 9:38Of ourselves to see if. Any of us fall into any of these
- 9:42things? I mean, this is something that
- 9:43we have to look inward at and say, OK, am I unthankful?
- 9:47Do I behave unholy? But with these particular men,
- 9:50they are going to be unholy. The Bible tells us that we're to
- 9:54be holy as he is holy and. That we're to be set apart from
- 9:58the world and to be consecrated unto Him, but instead.
- 10:02At that particular time, these people.
- 10:04Are going to be profane. They're going to not.
- 10:06Desire to do the. Things according to God's truth.
- 10:09They'll be. Vessels of dishonor.
- 10:11And instead of being set apart from the world, they're going to
- 10:15be immersed in worldliness, immersed in worldliness, finding
- 10:22pleasure in the fallen world system.
- 10:25And most of it is going to be through compromise, through
- 10:29compromise. Lot easier to compromise and
- 10:32don't have to be by yourself and to compromise and be with
- 10:35everybody. Else to look like everybody else
- 10:36to. Sound like.
- 10:37Everybody else that. Doesn't bring persecution, that
- 10:40doesn't bring resistance, but it's when you stand alone and
- 10:43often times you will. You will be in times, be in
- 10:47situations where you will need to stand for righteousness, and
- 10:50you will. Be by yourself and you.
- 10:54Have to be willing to be able to stand as opposed to
- 10:57compromising, he said. Unloving or without natural
- 11:00affection. This breaks my heart because
- 11:03when you talk about natural, without natural affection, he
- 11:06said, you're going to be without natural affection.
- 11:09It's a natural affection. For us to love our kids.
- 11:12To love our parents. To love our wives or our our.
- 11:15Our husbands, that's a natural affection.
- 11:18It's something that should be built into us, that's born in us
- 11:22to love. Our.
- 11:23Children. But we have an example, a
- 11:26biblical example. Of this.
- 11:28Lack of natural affection. We have it.
- 11:32In the Book of Solomon in the book of first Kings, Solomon,
- 11:36when he. Had to judge.
- 11:37Between the the two women who had sons, they both had sons and
- 11:42and one of them rolled over in the sons in the middle of the
- 11:45night and the one son died and the other one was alive.
- 11:47The woman whose son died, she went over and she grabbed the
- 11:50son that was still living out of the bed with the woman who was
- 11:52still sleeping, put the live baby in her bed.
- 11:55Took the dead baby. Put it in the other woman's bed.
- 11:58They came before Solomon, they said.
- 11:59You got to judge between the two.
- 12:01The woman said no, that's my. Child.
- 12:02The living child. Is mine.
- 12:04The dead child is. Hers, the other woman said.
- 12:05No, the living child is mine. The dead child is her.
- 12:07Solomon said. I got the solution.
- 12:09Bring the baby and bring me a sword.
- 12:11Solomon put the baby on the table.
- 12:13Took a swore he said I'll divide this child, I'll give.
- 12:17One 1/2 and give the other one the other half and the woman
- 12:20whose child it was not the woman who was not the mother, because
- 12:24she didn't have a natural affection for that.
- 12:27Child, she said. Yeah.
- 12:28That's right, go ahead and divide the child and give.
- 12:30Both of us half. And the woman who was the
- 12:33mother, the true mother, the child, she said no.
- 12:36Give her the baby, but please don't hurt the child.
- 12:41That's natural affection. For a for a child.
- 12:44That's natural affection A. Mother has that protective.
- 12:48Nature in her if you really want to see the.
- 12:51Worst. Of a woman mess.
- 12:53With her kids. Threaten her kids and you will
- 12:57see that woman do things that you never.
- 12:59Thought she could do. You be in trouble and this is
- 13:02exactly that's natural affection for the children.
- 13:05But we're seeing now in days where there's no natural
- 13:08affection. And in my research,
- 13:11unfortunately, I looked at some things that.
- 13:12Were just really, really. Dark in this society, one of the
- 13:17things that I learned that the sex trafficking, the whole
- 13:20industry of sex trafficking is really being motored not by
- 13:25careless men or thoughtful men. But by parents who are.
- 13:30Selling their children into sex trafficking for their own
- 13:34selfish reasons. For their own selfish reasons.
- 13:39Lack of natural affection. Abortion to kill.
- 13:43A child that's. Growing inside.
- 13:45Of you. That's a natural.
- 13:47That's that's. Without natural affection.
- 13:50Physical abuse. Sexual abuse.
- 13:53Are all signs of a lack of natural affection.
- 13:57Then he goes on, he says unforgiving and or
- 14:00unreconcilable. People who will.
- 14:02Just not agree to to forgive. Regardless of how long these
- 14:07things have happened, it's been unreconcilable.
- 14:09As we get. Closer to the time of Christ.
- 14:11That will get worse. And they'll become truce
- 14:14Breakers, which is another. Word that they use it's.
- 14:16Truce Breakers in the King James version, and that's just not
- 14:20even be able to. Keep oaths or keep?
- 14:22Covenants. And that's why.
- 14:23We have such a. Rise in divorce because we
- 14:27become. Truce Breakers.
- 14:29We'll become covenant Breakers, slanderers of false.
- 14:34Accusers, people will start. To knock down and lie against
- 14:37other people and tear down the the the reputation of other
- 14:41people through gossip, through slander, and through lies and.
- 14:44Hateful speech, that. Is not of God, That is not of
- 14:48God. To sit down and to destroy or to
- 14:50murder someone with the tongue is not of God.
- 14:55It is not of God. And if we see these things in
- 14:58ourselves? We should cry out to the Lord.
- 15:00And ask him to help. Us to give us.
- 15:02Grace to change these things and he.
- 15:04Will he will, he says, without self-control.
- 15:09That's just. Living a life of inhibition.
- 15:11Live, just doing whatever feels good and that's.
- 15:14Where we get the. Gambling from we get.
- 15:16Abuse, sex abuse we get drug abuse, alcohol abuse all.
- 15:20Leads from a lack of self-control, but not only that.
- 15:23But the lack of. Self-control is also seen in the
- 15:26church We. See that that that there?
- 15:28Are people that are increasingly, not only in
- 15:31church, but even outside of church, people that are
- 15:33increasingly having a lack of self-control over their
- 15:36emotions, over their emotions. So they blow up that things, the
- 15:41smallest things, they blow up, they get angry and they hold
- 15:44these things forever. No control over their emotions.
- 15:49Incontinent is another. Word that is used for that
- 15:52Brutal. And untamed.
- 15:54This is like the this is like the result of a society where
- 15:57people are so. Selfish that when they don't
- 16:00get. Their way they can behave.
- 16:01Violently, they can behave. Like, like savages, despisers of
- 16:07good. And these are people who are.
- 16:09Actually, they actually hate. Good or godly things.
- 16:13In fact, not only do they despise good things, but they
- 16:16even hate the people. Who try to live godly.
- 16:19Jesus told us in John 15 that the world.
- 16:22Hates you because. You are not.
- 16:24Of the world you're. Living godly so the world does
- 16:27not love people who are living. Godly, the world hates people
- 16:33who? Are living in Golly.
- 16:33But they love. Their own and then it says.
- 16:36Traitors. People who are.
- 16:37Or trading. They betray.
- 16:39Each other, they betray the secrets of each other, betray
- 16:42each other's trust a lot of. That's going to start happening
- 16:46and as we go into. These last days, people.
- 16:49Are going to be giving up to governors and giving up to
- 16:51councils. Headstrong or or heady, which
- 16:55means living. Reckless without.
- 16:57Any kind of. Thought or forethought?
- 17:00They just do things without thinking things.
- 17:02Through which also. Comes from lack of control.
- 17:05A lot of these things are very much interconnected.
- 17:08It's like a person who just makes a decision and acts on
- 17:11that decision without thinking things through.
- 17:14People who are haughty. Or high minded and these are.
- 17:17People who are just so proud that they take their.
- 17:20Position. They use their position as a.
- 17:22Way to put other? People down and to put
- 17:25themselves up, there's a way of making themselves more important
- 17:30and that's going to increase. They're high minded and Romans
- 17:3312 and three says you know not to think of yourself more highly
- 17:36than you want, but yet these people were going to be blinded
- 17:40by self worth, blinded by their high thoughts of themselves and
- 17:46then of. Course lovers of.
- 17:48Pleasure rather than lovers. Of God.
- 17:52And that's one need to spend a little bit of time on because
- 17:54when you look at where this thing.
- 17:56Started. We're talked about.
- 17:59Men will be lovers of themselves.
- 18:00That was the very. First one and then the one the
- 18:04last one. Is lovers of pleasure rather
- 18:08than lovers of God. I just want to make it clear
- 18:11though, now these are people who are not making a choice between
- 18:14loving pleasure and loving God. That is not the.
- 18:18Choice because there is. Pleasure in.
- 18:20God, God has pleasure. In fact, in Psalm 1611 it tells
- 18:24us that in His presence there is fullness of.
- 18:27Joy. And at his right hand are
- 18:30pleasures evermore. So the difference is the
- 18:33difference is worldly. Pleasure versus godly pleasures.
- 18:39And their choice. Is that they'd rather have
- 18:41worldly pleasure because that feeds the flesh, so the choice.
- 18:45That they're making is to have. Worldly pleasures over godly
- 18:50pleasures. And it's A and they're.
- 18:52Deceived because worldly pleasures.
- 18:55Are fleeting, worldly pleasures are temporal and anything
- 18:59that's. Temporal is temporary.
- 19:01So that means that their. Pleasures are just.
- 19:03Fleeting, Moses said. Look, I don't even want to be.
- 19:05Called the the daughter. The son of the daughter of
- 19:10Pharaoh anymore. I don't even want to be called
- 19:12that anymore. But I rather suffer.
- 19:14Affliction with the. People of God.
- 19:17Been to enjoy the pleasures of sin for season.
- 19:21Moses understood that that was not going to last.
- 19:23That was a temporary. Situation People who were
- 19:27living, and it was me at one time who was living for the
- 19:30pleasures. Of this.
- 19:31World, we think it's going to go on and on and on like it's never
- 19:35going to end. I'm going to have fun all my
- 19:37life. I ain't ever going to give this
- 19:40up. I'm having too much fun.
- 19:42Yes, it ends. It ends and it usually doesn't
- 19:46end well. It doesn't end well.
- 19:49But these? These things are temporal, but
- 19:52in. God, there are pleasures.
- 19:54Evermore, Evermore. And that's the choice.
- 19:59But then he goes down here and he says now.
- 20:02All. These things.
- 20:04That was just listed, the lovers of themselves lovers.
- 20:08Of money boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to
- 20:12parents, people who are unthankful, people who are
- 20:14unholy, unloving, unforgiving. The Slanderers.
- 20:18Those who are without. Self.
- 20:19Control those who are, brutal those who are.
- 20:22Despisers of self and. Traitors, those who are.
- 20:25Headstrong, haughty, and. Lovers of pleasure.
- 20:28Rather than. Lovers of God, all those people.
- 20:32Have a form of godliness. It's a form of godliness.
- 20:37So these people on the. Outside, they look religious.
- 20:42They make even talk. Like they're religious.
- 20:45They have a form of godliness, and it's form of godliness
- 20:48actually means that it's a they have a shape of godliness or
- 20:51semblance of godliness. They have an appearance of
- 20:54godliness, but there's no fruit, there's no substance, there's
- 20:59nothing. There's no life on the inside.
- 21:02It's just a shell of an. Appearance of godliness.
- 21:07It's an imitator. Of godly people without the
- 21:11power. So it's like profession.
- 21:14Without practice. Without no relationship
- 21:17whatsoever. And this is what Paul is saying.
- 21:21Paul is saying these people are going to look righteous.
- 21:24They're going to. Look holy, they're going to look
- 21:25religious, but. They won't have the Redeemer.
- 21:28They will not have that. Relationship with the Lord.
- 21:32None. These are people.
- 21:34Who Jesus is. Talking about over in Matthew 7
- 21:38when he says that they're going to be many that are going to
- 21:40come to me and say. Lord, Lord, but everybody who
- 21:43comes. To me saying Lord, Lord will not
- 21:45enter the Kingdom of heaven. Oh, but they're going.
- 21:47To put up the argument, Lord, didn't you know?
- 21:50You know, didn't we? Prophecy in your name did not
- 21:52cast out demons in your name did not do many wonders in your
- 21:56name. And he's going to say depart
- 21:58from me. I never knew you depart from me.
- 22:01You who work lawlessness? Yes, you had an outward shell.
- 22:06You had a. Appearance of godliness, but
- 22:09there was never relationship. I never knew you.
- 22:12There was never relationship and that's exactly what we're going
- 22:16to see in the last. Days, these teachers, these
- 22:19false teachers. That are going to have this
- 22:22appearance of godliness. They're going to sound godly.
- 22:26But their lives have. No.
- 22:28Fruit. They're going to be.
- 22:30Just like Jesus. Talked about over in Matthew
- 22:33chapter 20. 3 when he talked about the woes.
- 22:37Over in Matthew 23 and there's two woes in.
- 22:39Particular that just. He gives me the chills.
- 22:42That he talks about. And he basically saying chapter
- 22:4525 verse 23. What are you?
- 22:47Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites for you, cleanse the.
- 22:50Outside of the cup. And dish but inside.
- 22:54They are full of. Extortion and self indulgence.
- 22:57And that's. Exactly what these false
- 22:59teachers will be they'll be full of self.
- 23:02Indulgence. Everything that you're teaching,
- 23:05everything that they're doing is for selfish gain.
- 23:09The Bible says they're. Feeding their own bellies and
- 23:12then in verse 27 in the same. Chapter he says woe to you.
- 23:16Scribes and Pharisees. Hypocrites.
- 23:18For you are like whitewashed. Tombs which indeed appear.
- 23:22Beautifully beautiful outwardly. And I remember Clark telling us
- 23:25that he was in Israel and he stood up on the hill and he.
- 23:29Saw these whitewashed. Tombs and how they glittered in
- 23:34the sunlight and how. Beautiful they looked.
- 23:37In the sunlight, he said. That's exactly.
- 23:39What these false teachers? Are going to be.
- 23:41Like like these whitewashed. Tombs which indeed appear
- 23:45beautiful outwardly, but inside? Are full of dead.
- 23:49Man's bones and all uncleanness. All uncleanness.
- 23:57Here on Living Waters of Grace, we're in the books of First and
- 24:00Second Timothy. Pastor Lewis Harrell is walking
- 24:03us through these letters written from Paul to Timothy.
- 24:07Toward the end of these letters, Paul is anticipating that his
- 24:10time here on earth is coming to a close.
- 24:13He's giving some final words of advice to his mentee.
- 24:17Paul writes in Second Timothy 4, verse seven.
- 24:20I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.
- 24:23I have kept the faith wherever you are in your journey of faith
- 24:27with God, our hope is that you have the willingness to fight
- 24:31for what's true, not compromising, but holding fast
- 24:36to the Word of God. Paul was reminding Timothy of
- 24:39this, and it's a good reminder for you and for me today too.
