Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: It's the Craig Way Show with a voice of the
- 0:07Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon. Then you're ready for a weekend of football.
- 0:34Speaker 3: That's why we're about bringing some basketball conversation and also
- 0:37to let you know that the Yankees have just taken
- 0:39the lead on the Cleveland Guardians with an RBI single
- 0:44in the top of a second and they have runners
- 0:47on the corners with one out, so New York is
- 0:48up one to nothing in the top half of the
- 0:52second inning. And again, of course, the Yankees have a
- 0:55two games to none lead in that best of seven series.
- 0:59All right, just as was the case when we heard
- 1:02last hour, Texas women's head coach Vic Schaeffer from SEC
- 1:07Basketball Media days same story for the man Long Oraon's
- 1:10head coach Rodney Terry was there as well. Some thoughts
- 1:13from coach Terry, starting off with his opening comments, it's.
- 1:17Speaker 4: A great day to be alive. I said that to
- 1:19my guys this morning. We practice every morning, and it's
- 1:22the first thing I say that, guys, because it truly
- 1:25is a great data to be alive every day, to
- 1:28get a chance to do what we have a passion
- 1:31to do in terms of myself coaching them, getting a
- 1:33chance to play, continue to educate themselves and be a
- 1:37more well rounded person. So it is truly a great
- 1:41day to be alive. We're excited about joining the SEC.
- 1:47I mean, it's a league that I know our fan
- 1:51base is super excited about. I'll be remissed though, not
- 1:54to think the Big Twelve for our twenty eight years.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I was a part of the first year UH of.
- 2:00Speaker 4: The Big Twelve as an assistant at Baylor University.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, we had some great years in that league.
- 2:07Speaker 4: But but we're excited about where we're going and what
- 2:10we're doing as we embark on a new journey in
- 2:14terms of UH our basketball UH slate in the SEC.
- 2:19You know, have a tremendous amount of respect for garth
- 2:21And and Commissioner Sankie. They've done an incredible job with
- 2:24their leadership building the premiere we think basketball league in
- 2:29the country. So getting the chance to compete UH in
- 2:32this league from top to bottom leaving the Big Twelve,
- 2:36they're gonna it's not gonna be not gonna be any
- 2:38kind of drop off. I mean, uh, you know, we
- 2:41have great coaches, we have great players, We have great.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Venues in this league.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Uh, and uh, we're super excited about being a part
- 2:49of it. I think in terms of the media, you know,
- 2:54I like to think that we're gonna have a program
- 2:56that's very accessible to myself, being very sexileble to you guys,
- 3:01my players, being accessible to you guys on a regular basis,
- 3:04and again just trying to be very uh, you know,
- 3:10very forefront in terms of what we bring to the
- 3:13table every day and having a lot of integrity with
- 3:15what we do and how we do it.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I hope that fore for any questions from that point.
- 3:20All right, let's get to the questions. And right out
- 3:22of the gate, you knew this was coming. Being in
- 3:27the SEC means playing old Miss. Playing old Mess means
- 3:31matching up with his old boss and friend, Chris Beard,
- 3:36the former Texas coach who is now at ole Miss.
- 3:38And he was asked about that dynamic going up against
- 3:40coach Beard and Ole Miss the season.
- 3:43Speaker 4: Chris Beard, and now I go way way back. You're talking
- 3:45about twenty five years of friendship one of my really
- 3:49really close friends in the business. You know, I wouldn't
- 3:53have this opportunity here at Texas.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Uh.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You know if he wasn't kind enough to bring me
- 3:57back to Texas.
- 3:58Speaker 4: I mean previously I was with Rick Barnes for nine
- 4:01years at Texas and uh got a chance to come
- 4:04back and uh embark on a on a second stint
- 4:07at Texas and uh with the hope that we're gonna
- 4:10get a chance to build a national championship team, a
- 4:12team that played gets a chance to play on Monday night. Uh.
- 4:15And uh, but but he and our friendship, you know,
- 4:18we're still really close right now. We're still talking, communicate
- 4:21at a high level, talk about other opponents, you know,
- 4:24other than ourselves, uh and things of that nature. But uh,
- 4:27uh do you talk about a great person and a
- 4:30great coach Chris Berce, Chris Berchon that kind of guy. Uh.
- 4:35Speaker 3: He was also asked about trying to lay the foundation
- 4:39for his program in year one in the SEC.
- 4:43Speaker 4: You know this league, you know, I think again, you
- 4:45know we're built for it in terms of our culture.
- 4:48Uh think that the league again that uh, you know,
- 4:52they're gonna be nights where you have to be really physical.
- 4:54There mean nights where you're gonna have to really try
- 4:56to score the basketball.
- 4:57Speaker 2: They're gonna be nights where you have.
- 4:58Speaker 4: To really take care of the basket ketball and from
- 5:01top to bottom. There're no nights off in this league.
- 5:05I alluded to the fact earlier that they're great coaches,
- 5:07coaches that have taken their teams to the final four.
- 5:11And there's been great players in this league. And I've
- 5:15seen a lot of really good intimate environments to play
- 5:18in that'll be great venues.
- 5:20Speaker 3: And then he was asked about some of the specifics
- 5:24with regard to his players, starting with the addition of
- 5:27Tremon Mark, who had been at Arkansas and what he
- 5:32adds to his program.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Well, my native Texans, So, I mean, I've seen Treymond
- 5:38play a long time. I remember when he when he
- 5:40was in the eighth grade and he was coming up
- 5:43and my dad coached at his high school that he
- 5:46played in that year his high school years.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But my dad got fired from that.
- 5:50Speaker 4: Job and didn't get a chance to coach Tremont. But
- 5:53he was a really good young talent coming uh. So
- 5:56I've seen him for a very very long time. He's
- 5:59a youngster who has tremendous sized athleticism. He can go
- 6:04create his own shot, he could create for his teammates, very.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Good high IQ basketball player.
- 6:12Speaker 4: He's had a chance to compete be coached by some
- 6:15really good coaches.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So he's been coached very well.
- 6:18Speaker 4: He's had a chance to start on the Final fourteen
- 6:21at the University of Houston. So he's a guy that,
- 6:24you know, we look to bring a lot of a
- 6:26lot of.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Experience, a guy that plays on both ends of the floor.
- 6:31Speaker 4: He's a really good offensive player, but he's also a
- 6:33really good defensive player as well. So you talk about
- 6:37a guy that you know, we like to think that's
- 6:38gonna be a.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Great two way player for us. All right.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Then he was asked about his two Indiana State transfers.
- 6:44Jason Kent, the six to eight forward transferring in, and
- 6:48then Julian Larry, who can run the point and can
- 6:51play it can be very very versati with the guard spot.
- 6:54So the two former Indiana State Sycamores you managed to
- 6:57get all the way to the n i T Finals
- 6:58a year ago.
- 7:00Speaker 4: We're a team that returns six, you know, returners from
- 7:03last year, so we got a little bit of continuity
- 7:05from last year. We have six new guys from the
- 7:07portal and we have four freshmen. Uh so we've got
- 7:11a great blend great mix. Uh, and adding the two
- 7:14guys from in there the state. Talk about two guys
- 7:17that have played Jason played there two years Uh, Junior
- 7:21got a chance to play four years there.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Uh.
- 7:23Speaker 4: You talk about two guys that are really really familiar
- 7:26with each other and when they're on the floor, that
- 7:27are really in sync together all the time, whether it
- 7:30be from an offensive.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Standpoint defensive standpoint.
- 7:34Speaker 4: But I think there are two guys too that that
- 7:36that come into this season with a little bit of
- 7:37a chip on their shoulder. They didn't get a chance
- 7:40to compete in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. They
- 7:42went and had a deep run in then n I
- 7:44T where they played in the finals and lost in
- 7:47n I T. You know, I think again, two guys
- 7:50that are getting a chance to play at this level
- 7:53for the first time. They're not entitled. They're excited about
- 7:56every day. They're excited about competing on this on this stage,
- 8:00showing people that they can compete at the highest level. So,
- 8:03you know, I'm excited about what those guys bringing to
- 8:05the table. Julior Lewis is a guy who Julia Larry
- 8:08is a guy who who comes in and uh, he
- 8:11brings a lot of energy and a lot of joy
- 8:13uh to our team every day with just his uh,
- 8:16his uh, his energy and presence.
- 8:18Speaker 2: On both ends of the floor. He's a guy.
- 8:20Speaker 4: That's gonna be an initiate offense. He's gonna be a
- 8:23play defense at a high level.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Force.
- 8:26Speaker 4: Uh you talk about you know, Jason is a guy
- 8:31who's to be one of the elite cutters in all
- 8:33the college basketball great instincts. Uh. He's a guy that
- 8:38also should be a really good rebounded force and he
- 8:40could stretch the floor from the four or forward position
- 8:44force as well.
- 8:45Speaker 3: And then finally one other thing comment from him this
- 8:48about the highly heralded freshman guard Trey Johnson, of course
- 8:52was from Garland, actually played at Lake Highlands, then finished
- 8:55up the prep school at Link Academy and Missouri preseason
- 8:59freshmen of the Year in the SEC. And he was
- 9:01asked what Trey Johnson will supply and provide this year?
- 9:04Speaker 4: Trey, Uh, you know, again, I allude to the fact
- 9:06that we have six returners and you know, six uh,
- 9:10six guys from the portal four freshmen, so we got
- 9:14ten new players and again a blend of old and
- 9:18a blend of new and young and Uh. You know,
- 9:21he being one of the young guys. Uh, and a
- 9:24guy that I think again, you know, media wants to
- 9:27get familiar with. He's he's a guy that's deserving of
- 9:30being here today.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Uh.
- 9:31Speaker 4: He's an extremely talented player. He's a Tip five player
- 9:34in the country last year in his class. He's been
- 9:37the best player in his class. Uh, in the state
- 9:39of Texas his entire career. He's a guy that we
- 9:45think fits our culture at a very high level in
- 9:47terms of what he brings to the table. Super competitive,
- 9:52a kid that wants to get better every day.
- 9:56Speaker 2: He's proud of.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Being from the state of Texas and representing Uh. Uh
- 10:00you know Texas at the flagship program and uh, he's
- 10:03a super competitor. I got a chance to coach Kevin
- 10:07Durant for one year at Texas and uh, he and
- 10:10Kevin a lot have a lot of things that kind
- 10:12of come from the same cloth in terms of incredible
- 10:15work ethic. Is a guy that we have to literally
- 10:18push him out of the gym. He's in the gym
- 10:20twenty four to seven, much like Kevin was.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And he's he's a super competitive kid.
- 10:26Speaker 4: You put the scoreboard on and uh, he's competing at
- 10:30another level in terms of really one to win and
- 10:33compete at a very high level. So he's a guy
- 10:36that will count on this year, that have a big
- 10:38year and do big things in Austin.
- 10:40Speaker 3: All right, long words, head coach Rodney tearing uh and
- 10:43and there's a couple more things from him, and we're
- 10:45gonna play those two tomorrow because one is kind of
- 10:47a humorous moment on that. We'll do that tomorrow on
- 10:50the program. But when we back to wrap up today's
- 10:52program here on sport tradingo AM thirteen hunderd the zone
- 10:54of the iHeart Radio app
