- 0:12Welcome to Sometimes There's Side Eye, a podcast about two
- 0:16friends having real and unfiltered conversations about
- 0:19dogs and people listen as we talk about our lives with dogs,
- 0:23training, behavior, share some laughs and a whole lot of
- 0:27banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:30And I'm Christy. What are we talking about this
- 0:32week, Christy? This week.
- 0:35We're going to talk about when things look pristine and awesome
- 0:40on social media, but you got to take a deeper dive.
- 0:44You got to look a little bit beyond the surface level of
- 0:49what's being shown to see what's really going on.
- 0:52Oh my goodness. Just just set it up.
- 0:54Christy, tell us what it what happened?
- 0:57So was it you? Did you send me?
- 1:00That I did. So Heather sent me a video with
- 1:06more than a dozen dogs, I would say in clearly some sort of
- 1:10boarding facility, and they're picking dogs 1 by 1 and all the
- 1:14dogs are sitting calmly or laying down.
- 1:18And then they're putting leashes on different dogs and walking
- 1:22them on loose leashes to treadmills and watching it, it,
- 1:28it looks like a beautiful thing, like dozens of dogs or, or at
- 1:31least a dozen dogs being so well behaved and just, and they're,
- 1:36they're clearly flexing that this is, you know, this is what
- 1:40they can do for you and this is how they train dogs.
- 1:44But Heather and I saw something very different.
- 1:47We saw dogs who had given up, who had no personality left, had
- 1:53really been trained out of them, beaten out, who knows, you know,
- 1:58forced out of them, so that they were really just robots at that
- 2:03point. And there was no enjoyment in
- 2:06their work with the people. There was just obedience.
- 2:10And it made me so sad to see. And what we thought, though, was
- 2:16I. I told Heather, It's so
- 2:19impressive on the surface, if you don't know anything about
- 2:23dog behavior, it's so impressive to see someone so in control of
- 2:28so many powerful breeds at once. But underneath it, it's really
- 2:35disheartening. I think OK, so I originally saw
- 2:42it on a page of a dog trainer who was being snarky and said,
- 2:51you know, like. Yeah.
- 2:54Like, oh, look at this control or something like that.
- 2:58And so I watched it and I was like, I see no dogs being dogs
- 3:07and I see no joy. And it one thing that I just
- 3:11have to say is an aside anytime that I see someone snapping at
- 3:16their at a dog as a cue. It's not like a metaphor, like a
- 3:22physical, like. Like an actual snap.
- 3:26I just see Cesar Milan. I'm sorry, that's exactly what I
- 3:30see. And it is a do I think that
- 3:35there are trainers out there that I agree with their methods
- 3:38and that they could use snapping as a cue?
- 3:40Yes. Do I think that the average
- 3:42person who is using snapping as a cue is training the way that I
- 3:47think is kindest to dogs? No.
- 3:49So I immediately was triggered by the snapping immediately.
- 3:57And then it's like, OK, so let me back up.
- 4:00One thing that Christy said, it actually started with the dogs
- 4:03coming into the person and the person asking for the sits or
- 4:09the essentially they were asking for the dogs to stop motion.
- 4:12And it seemed to me that if the dog gave a sit or a down, either
- 4:16was acceptable, but that they need, they couldn't just stand
- 4:19there. They needed to like do some sort
- 4:21of behavior. And so part of asking for that
- 4:26behavior was this whole snapping sequence.
- 4:29And I think I said to Christy when I sent it to her because
- 4:33the places in California, I was like, oh, is this what
- 4:35California dog owners are looking for?
- 4:37Something like that snarky as well.
- 4:39And Christy, because while we are not good at us seeing other
- 4:46perspectives in our own brains, we are good at telling each
- 4:50other's brains to. See.
- 4:54We're good at the other one being judgy and pushing.
- 4:57Back. Yeah, we're good at that.
- 4:59Chrissy immediately came back and said, like, well, don't you
- 5:02think the average dog owner would see this video and be
- 5:05impressed and be like, oh, I want my dog to go there and
- 5:08behave like this? And I was like, oh shit, why do
- 5:10you have to take my snarkiness and, like, make me have to
- 5:12behave? I hate this, but really I think
- 5:18the reason why we wanted to talk about it is because it is the
- 5:23antithesis of where we are as dog owners and how we want our
- 5:30dogs to feel and live. Do you think that's fair?
- 5:36Yeah, yeah. And I do think right after you
- 5:39had sent that or maybe right before, my manager and I had
- 5:43been talking about dog stuff. And he said that he and his
- 5:47friend share dog videos, videos of their own dogs.
- 5:50And and his friend said, oh, you're treat training your dogs.
- 5:56Yeah. And he said, well, you should go
- 5:57to my trainer. He's like, I can walk around
- 6:00Home Depot with no leash and my dog never leaves my side.
- 6:05OK, so I and my manager's like, isn't that so impressive?
- 6:09And I said, well, it depends on how he got there, honestly.
- 6:13And he goes, what do you mean? I said just because somebody
- 6:16arrives at a destination doesn't mean they're driving was
- 6:21impressive to get there. You know that's.
- 6:23A good metaphor. And so we talked about that.
- 6:27I said I'd much rather have a dog who occasionally dogs on a
- 6:31leash in, but we have a relationship than a dog who is
- 6:37militant to me. Yes, I completely agree.
- 6:40It's it's interesting too, because I think that your
- 6:44perspective on how much dogging that you're willing to accept
- 6:49agree to not care about also depends on the dog and where
- 6:54you're at in your relationship with your dog and the dog's age.
- 6:57My husband and I were saying just this week, I I Tiago is a
- 7:03very obviously attached dog to me and generally very obedient.
- 7:08But as the years go on, there's a bit of middle finger to me and
- 7:17never I know right. And I here's the thing, though,
- 7:22like my husband and I are very senior dogs will seen your dog
- 7:25and like you like there's a lot of allowance there.
- 7:28If you're not hurting anyone, If you want to blow me off because
- 7:32you're nine years old and like, you know better, like go on with
- 7:35your bad self. Trin at 2 is not allowed to blow
- 7:40me off, but Tiago at 9, Tater at 9 y'all.
- 7:43Well, tater's always blown me off, but Tiago at 9 is allowed
- 7:47to blow me off. And so I had like said to my
- 7:51husband, I go, do you do you think that he didn't hear me or
- 7:57did he just like totally blow me off and chair?
- 8:01Was like. No, he literally gave you the
- 8:03middle finger. Like I do think that there's
- 8:06stages in life, but that's an aside at this point.
- 8:10These dogs were literally they looked like little, like a
- 8:15little militia. They looked like this militant
- 8:18like let me snap at you and you will.
- 8:21It was, it was so sad. And there was like a moment that
- 8:26one of, I think it was a little pity showed a little bit of
- 8:30wiggle, yeah. And I was like.
- 8:31Oh, there's some life in there. And it was immediately
- 8:34corrected. And like, nobody wiggles, nobody
- 8:37has fun. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:39And I'm like. Oh, the joy of a dog is part of
- 8:46that is the dog's joy. Yeah, but don't you agree that
- 8:52you have to have that mindset? That is a mindset that is a
- 8:58paradigm shift. Me when I maybe 10-15 years ago,
- 9:06maybe last was like I will have a dog, I will have a dog and
- 9:10when I am on a walk with them, they will obey.
- 9:12And versus me today where there are times where I'm like I'm
- 9:18getting my steps, you need exercise, we're off.
- 9:20But there are parameters that my dog understands when we go out
- 9:25to go on a walk. This picture means we're out to
- 9:28get a walk and get steps. When the picture looks like
- 9:31this, then we're out for a leisurely La La la.
- 9:35You smell all the things and pee on 75 spots.
- 9:38And I do think I do think that those two different pictures are
- 9:43really important because the dog that it's understanding and
- 9:46communication to the dog. But me maybe 10 years ago I I
- 9:52can't remember if I was militant when Tiago was young.
- 9:57I feel like more than I am now, but way less than that video.
- 10:03You were never at that video. Level no, no.
- 10:06But it is a paradigm shift to see the silliness and see the
- 10:14goofiness and see the quote UN quote misbehaving and laugh at
- 10:21it. Yeah.
- 10:22And accept it as part of the joy of owning A sentient being that
- 10:27lives in its own world, parallel to us.
- 10:32Right. Yeah.
- 10:33I also think sometimes people see obedience competitors or
- 10:39videos of them and think that that's how the dog lives full
- 10:43time and that's not and I think that's kind.
- 10:46Of some do, some do. Yeah, that's sad.
- 10:52It is sad. That is sad.
- 10:54That makes my heart sad, but I think like and that's kind of
- 10:59what that video looked like kind of strict obedience kind of
- 11:06situation. But a lot of times even in
- 11:08obedience, there's some bounce and some excitement.
- 11:11There was no excitement in this video.
- 11:13There was no bounce. There was just very controlled
- 11:17movements. But even if, even if there's
- 11:22some balance and excitement, whatever, I think what people
- 11:25need to know is maybe some of those dogs live that way all the
- 11:28time, but a lot of them don't. A lot of them are competing.
- 11:33They know they're competing. They're doing it for this amount
- 11:37of time and then they get to go back to being just a dog.
- 11:41If you know what you're looking at, you can watch obedience
- 11:46competitors and you can tell the relationship that they have with
- 11:50their dog and whether there is a foundation of joy or there is a
- 11:55foundation of you will obey, you can actually tell it.
- 11:59And very many yes, I mean, take you will obey.
- 12:06However, like I'm not, I'm not talking about methods.
- 12:09I'm talking about you will obey whatever that looks like, you
- 12:12know, whatever methods they're using.
- 12:13And it is interesting to me to watch that when I watch
- 12:20obedience, and this is competition obedience that we're
- 12:22talking about. But even obedience around the
- 12:25house, right when you watch a dog that has been squelched into
- 12:32obeying, it looks very different.
- 12:34I follow and we've talked about her before and behaviorist who
- 12:40has Rottweilers, border collies and a Stafford and she talks
- 12:45about and she is extremely competitive in every sport she
- 12:48tries. But watching her dogs compete in
- 12:53obedience with her actually makes me emotional because when
- 13:00you watch them, obedience is extremely controlled.
- 13:03And if you've never watched it, just go on YouTube and look up
- 13:08obedience competition title BN like B as in boy, N as in Nancy,
- 13:15that's beginner novice or CD as in companion dog.
- 13:19Just watch what that looks like and see how controlled it is,
- 13:23how the movements are super controlled and what you're asked
- 13:25to do is super controlled. But when you watch this person
- 13:30like run her dogs in formal obedience, I, I'm not kidding
- 13:35you, I tear up almost every time because the joy that is exuded
- 13:41in that relationship is so incredible.
- 13:44And she's top level competitor. But her, her dogs and her are
- 13:50joyful. You can be accurate and joyful.
- 13:55Yeah, and you know, that same week that Heather sent the
- 14:00video, I sent her one back of somebody I follow and his
- 14:04Pitbull is Gigi. And it's sweet Gigi.
- 14:06Oh. Yes, it was so sweet.
- 14:09And watching him do obedience with his dog, and it's not
- 14:13formal obedience, but it's, you know, he works with her in
- 14:16public. He makes her downstay.
- 14:18He he works with her. He has her and a Malinois.
- 14:22And he works with them differently because they have
- 14:24different needs. Yeah, but her obedience is on
- 14:28point. And yet she is so joyful.
- 14:33Yeah. And I think a lot of times we
- 14:37say, well, you can't have super obedient dogs.
- 14:42I don't know. I think there's this misnomer of
- 14:44like you, if you make your dog obey, you can't have joyful
- 14:49dogs. Like if you have a well, let me
- 14:51try this again. If you have a well behaved dog,
- 14:55they're not joyful. If you have a joyful dog,
- 14:58they're not well behaved. That the two don't intersect and
- 15:01they do. Yeah, but I also think that
- 15:03that's understanding that a joyful and obedient dog isn't.
- 15:10That also doesn't equal control like an obedient and joyful dog.
- 15:16You are. You are in a fluid relationship
- 15:19with that dog and you have a partnership.
- 15:23Yes. It is not about control.
- 15:26It is about a partnership. I don't want at this stage of my
- 15:32life, I cannot imagine not having a joyful relationship
- 15:38with the dogs that I live with. It does.
- 15:40And that doesn't mean you don't get frustrated.
- 15:43What like listen to this podcast like.
- 15:46A relationship relationship. We're still 2 beings, right?
- 15:49But I I can't imagine doing the things that I do with my dogs
- 15:59and being focused on control and being focused on obedience
- 16:05versus joy. The joy brings so much more.
- 16:09And here's the thing, you will still get to the same place if
- 16:12you put in the work. Yeah.
- 16:15Like Christy said, your journey will just look different.
- 16:18Yeah. Do you think that breed has a
- 16:26relevance in the amount of joy? Like when you think about dogs
- 16:33that you see, you know what I'm saying?
- 16:35Yeah, I do, but not in necessarily the way you would
- 16:38think. Tell me more.
- 16:40I think there are more serious breeds, and that's not to say
- 16:44every dog in that breed is serious, but the overall arching
- 16:48theme of that breed might be more serious than goofy or
- 16:52playful. But I I don't think I would say
- 16:57Jackson has learned to be more silly.
- 17:00He was very serious when he came to me.
- 17:02I would agree. He's still serious sometimes.
- 17:07He still wants to be a serious dog.
- 17:09And when we're working, he's serious.
- 17:12Yeah, but we had to learn the the play aspect, the silliness
- 17:18aspect, and I think with someone else he could have just been
- 17:23serious all the time and he would have been fine.
- 17:26I don't know if you remember, but one of the things you said
- 17:29to me when you're trying to figure out if you were going to
- 17:31adopt him, was he was too serious for you.
- 17:35Because. After Lucy, right?
- 17:37Lucy was a comedian. Oh, such a comedian.
- 17:41Yeah, it's part of what attracts me to bully breeds of any
- 17:44variety is the silliness. Yeah, Yeah.
- 17:47I think it's really interesting because so I've been working
- 17:51really hard on my relationship with Trin, as you know, and
- 17:54we've been making a lot of progress and a huge element of
- 18:00her and I communicating better, bettering our relationship and
- 18:06in the end bettering my trust in her.
- 18:11And her quote UN quote, obedience is play.
- 18:17So I think about that and I'm like, well, she's like a silly
- 18:23dog in a lot of ways, right? And what the fuck?
- 18:26She's a Frenchie. Yeah.
- 18:27But she wants to play with me. She wants to interact with me in
- 18:33a very physical way. And playing with her has added a
- 18:40very positive element to our relationship.
- 18:43But within that play, I am asking her to quote UN quote
- 18:48obey. So we're playing right, We're
- 18:51playing tug. It's very it's very physical.
- 18:54I push on her. I like Tapper sides.
- 18:57I want her to growl at me. I'm growling at her like all
- 19:00this. And then I'm throwing a toy for
- 19:03her to fetch. And so I'm asking her to release
- 19:08the toy. When I say I'm asking her to
- 19:10down sometimes I'm asking her to like do different things,
- 19:14throwing that all in right. But the excitement of the joy
- 19:17and the play bleeds over to excitement in the quote UN quote
- 19:24obedience. So it's interesting to me,
- 19:28'cause she is the first, not the first dog, but the first dog.
- 19:33I have actively employed play as part of building our
- 19:40relationship. And so it's interesting to see
- 19:46how play and her being obedient can work hand in hand.
- 19:53And so there's people who'd be like, oh, you can't do that.
- 19:55Like they need to be serious all the time.
- 19:57And I would counter and be like, absolutely not.
- 20:00Yeah, absolutely. Not I would say play would have
- 20:04been really useful for Lucy. Like, I never trained with play,
- 20:08but I do think she would have loved that.
- 20:10Jackson, if he's in a serious situation, he doesn't want to
- 20:13play. He's like, he's like, could you
- 20:16knock it off and pay attention to what's happening right now?
- 20:18You're about to compete. Like yeah, you need to get your
- 20:21shit together, girl. Yeah, well, and I told you, I
- 20:24tried to play with Trin at work practice and she was like, no,
- 20:28ma'am, when we're like we're playing at home, her one-on-one
- 20:32and it's like play wrapped up into a training.
- 20:36But like out, like in competition, she's like, no, I
- 20:38have my game face on right now. I'm not interested in doing
- 20:41this, but right. That makes sense.
- 20:45Yeah, the. Play is reinforcing the in
- 20:49between commands and making me be able to live with her easier
- 20:55because it it puts so much value in that in those cues that I'm
- 21:01like wrapping up into the. Play Yeah.
- 21:04Which I think makes for a happier dog like for her.
- 21:09Yeah, you had to know your own dog.
- 21:11For sure. What they feed off of what I
- 21:14mean, Lucy really fed off of laughter, so that was
- 21:17unfortunate for. Me.
- 21:19It was wonderful. For everyone else, when you do
- 21:25the promo reel for this episode, can you please include the clip
- 21:30of Lucy tossing the rally signs? Please.
- 21:37Absolutely everyone must see it. I think though it's, it is
- 21:40interesting. So I would say that as always,
- 21:44perspective is very important. So when you see something on
- 21:47social media that initially you're like, oh, that's fancy or
- 21:51oh, that looks flashy or oh, look at what they're doing.
- 21:55I I would, as always, encourage you to look at what does the dog
- 22:00actually look like? Yeah.
- 22:02Is the dog enjoying themselves? Is the dog.
- 22:07And maybe, you know, sometimes you just have to behave and you
- 22:12don't get to enjoy yourself. But does the dog look defeated
- 22:15because of Ask Novay? Well, then maybe that's not, you
- 22:19know, maybe it's not as great as we think.
- 22:21And maybe that's not a place that you want to send your dog.
- 22:25Yeah, please. Yeah, if you've enjoyed this
