Transcript
- 0:16Welcome to sometimes their side. I a podcast about two friends,
- 0:20having real and unfiltered conversations about dogs and
- 0:23people listened. As we talk about our lives, with
- 0:26dogs, training Behavior, share some laughs and a whole lot of
- 0:30banter. I'm Heather and I'm Christie and
- 0:34this week. Oh boy, we are talking about
- 0:39bees bees. Yay, don't act excited.
- 0:43I know you're not excited. I had a puppy person but I am
- 0:47excited about puppies. Let me clarify I'm not a puppy
- 0:50person if I do not want to live with a puppy full-time writer
- 0:56you'll just puppies. Yep.
- 0:59You'll enjoy other people's puppies.
- 1:01Yeah I love when other people get puppies and then I can send
- 1:05those puppies home with those owners.
- 1:07Yeah I understand that an episode about puppies might not
- 1:11be everybody's cup of tea which is fair enough but you're still
- 1:14going to get Irregular banter and shit, talking back and
- 1:18forth, and all the fun, and maybe you're going to get a
- 1:21puppy in the future, or the episode.
- 1:24Could give you some thoughts and ideas about other things in
- 1:27general or, you know, someone who's going to get a puppy and
- 1:30then you can send the episode to them and I don't know how many
- 1:34times this has happened to you. But so often people start
- 1:37talking to me about a puppy that they want to get.
- 1:40And and they are looking for a vice.
- 1:41Do I feel like this episode is going to be perfect?
- 1:45Even if you're having those casual conversations with your
- 1:48friends who are wanting to get puppies as well.
- 1:50Yeah, if them some things to think about do, I call myself
- 1:54more than a puppy novice at this point.
- 1:58Yes, don't call me an expert. I don't want that title.
- 2:02Pretty close. How about a puppy, professional?
- 2:06You have to be professional? Yes.
- 2:09Okay, I will accept that considering professional puppy,
- 2:13Wrangler, I am that, as well as Tiago.
- 2:17We both are taters of part-time Wrangler.
- 2:20If you've listened to an episode before, you know that I own a
- 2:23small business called Puppy K all day and that is literally
- 2:27raising people. Those puppies for them, training
- 2:30them socializing them. So I will call myself a puppy
- 2:33professional. I was just going to say to
- 2:35Define raising its short term, and at the end of every day,
- 2:39mostly those puppies go home. Yeah.
- 2:41And as for a few weeks, yes, so it's not a board in train, we
- 2:46call it a day train. So the puppies come to me while
- 2:49their families working or doing whatever they have to do.
- 2:52They spend about eight to nine hours with me and then they go
- 2:56home at night so they can bond with their family.
- 2:58And they get training videos and blah, blah blah.
- 3:01So yeah, it's not a traditional board and train.
- 3:04I prefer the puppy keeps bonding with their family, and the
- 3:07family can be a part of the experience versus a puppy.
- 3:10Just coming to me for two, straight weeks, or four straight
- 3:12weeks. So, yeah, it's a little bit
- 3:14different. I just wanted to clear.
- 3:16Thanks so much Christy. Yes, I'm not gonna get a puppy,
- 3:20but if I ever was, I'll be sending it to others during the
- 3:24day and then getting that nice tired.
- 3:25Puppy at the end of the day. Yeah, I mean, There are
- 3:29definitely benefits to it and I am clearly interested in raising
- 3:34puppies and all the science behind it and all that stuff.
- 3:38So what inspired this episode in particular?
- 3:42I made a little infographic on going to visit a potential puppy
- 3:49that was inspired by a conversation that I had with
- 3:52potential client over the phone. Of course I shared my
- 3:56conversation with Christy but the conversation was super
- 3:59interesting because the person was going to look at a puppy and
- 4:05they had been following this breeder for at least a year on
- 4:09Instagram. They were super excited about
- 4:12this particular breeder and they had honed in on this being the
- 4:17type of dog that they wanted to get.
- 4:19So she had initially told me that they were going to wait
- 4:22until the end of the year and then she told me that there was
- 4:26a puppy that was available for Current literature and that they
- 4:30had decided they were going to go and see it.
- 4:32So right off the bat that was a little bit of a red flag to me,
- 4:36it just in the way of oh the opportunities there even though
- 4:42we had a plan all of the sudden there's this opportunity and we
- 4:47feel like maybe this is the time.
- 4:50So yeah, you know I just kind of was like oh you really had a
- 4:55solid plan so much of a plan that You reached out to me.
- 4:59Six months before you ever got your puppy, just amazing.
- 5:02It is. I'm not saying yeah.
- 5:05So I just text her back and I said, hey before you go, can we
- 5:11have a chat? Can we talk on the phone?
- 5:14And she said, oh yeah, sure. She was concerned about
- 5:16integrating her puppy, with her two, adult dogs and she had
- 5:19wanted some tips. And I really wanted to just get
- 5:23her on the phone so we can talk about going to see this puppy.
- 5:27Truth be told if You're listening.
- 5:29It was with the purest intentions.
- 5:32We ended up having about a 45-minute conversation and we
- 5:35started out talking about integrating, a new puppy with
- 5:38her with her adult dogs and then I just kind of asked her some
- 5:42questions. It was things like what made you
- 5:46decide to throw your timeline Elka window?
- 5:49Okay. Seven i7 that no, totally, this
- 5:52was very professional conversation.
- 5:54This is me, breaking it down here and she had shared with me
- 5:58and I have so appreciate her honesty.
- 6:00She had shared with me that this little boy was left behind and
- 6:04didn't have a home, and the breeder was lowering his prize
- 6:10that made him very attractive. I said, okay, I can totally
- 6:15understand that. Do you feel like really have a
- 6:21connection with this little guy? Or are those really the driving
- 6:25factors right now? And she said, um no I just am
- 6:30really interested because I think we could make it work
- 6:33right now and I thought. Okay, fair enough.
- 6:37So I asked her some questions about what the breeder told her
- 6:42about this particular puppy. And she told me a few adjective
- 6:49one of which really stuck out to me, which was shy, the word
- 6:53chai, can mean a million things, right?
- 6:55But when you're talking about, Puppy and then your home has
- 7:00grandchildren and adult dogs and is a very active home.
- 7:05I feel concerned if the breeder who knows the puppy best or
- 7:09should is openly describing the puppy is shy.
- 7:13Yeah, I think you know there's certain words that we need to
- 7:19have the breeder defying or the rescue or wherever you're
- 7:23getting your puppy from. If they know that there's a
- 7:25characteristic. Stick of that, dog.
- 7:27Sometimes we need to say, well how do you define that?
- 7:30Because it may be that shy to them is they've learned that the
- 7:34public refers to shy as not the first dog to greet you in the
- 7:39litter. I'm holds back and watches but
- 7:41is confident and Hoagie and isn't going to shy away from
- 7:45you. I don't know.
- 7:47So they may have changed their lingo a little bit to to fit
- 7:50what the public perception is or it may be that shy, is you reach
- 7:55down to pet a puppy and Puppy is terrified and piece itself.
- 7:59Yeah, like there's that's a huge range.
- 8:02Yes, would incorporate shy. So that's where we need some
- 8:05definitions from. Whoever has that puppy, I gave
- 8:09her some little tips to kind of test the parameters of which, I
- 8:15actually means when she goes to meet this little guy, I told her
- 8:19about Christie's favorite word, which is resilience.
- 8:23I explained to her what that meant in.
- 8:26Terms of a puppy. So, basically, when we say a
- 8:29puppy is resilient, even if a puppy is nervous about
- 8:33something. We're unsure or gets startled.
- 8:36Their response to come back and be curious about.
- 8:39That thing really means that that puppy has resilience and
- 8:42yes, it is something that we can grow, and we can cultivate, but
- 8:47they have to have a natural amount of resilience and
- 8:50puppies. At the age of this, puppy should
- 8:53be ready to just be so curious about The world.
- 8:57So it really the word just kind of made me stop and pause and I
- 9:01asked her, does that word mean anything to you or make you have
- 9:07any certain feelings? And she's she did say that, that
- 9:10word had made her kind of pause. And I was like, okay.
- 9:14So she had a little gut reaction to that word.
- 9:17Specifically we went on to talk, I asked her.
- 9:21Why did you select this certain mix?
- 9:24She told me that her husband really likes.
- 9:26Likes the color and the way they look and I was like, okay, fine.
- 9:31And just as a side note, people are allowed to choose a dog
- 9:36because they find that dog attractive.
- 9:38Yeah, let's just get that out of the way because like they're,
- 9:41I'm not going to name any breeds because I'm not alienating
- 9:44anyone, but there's some breeds that, I just think.
- 9:47Wow, that is not an attractive diet, I don't want to live with
- 9:50them, so yes, that should not be your only attraction to a dog,
- 9:54but it's there. Should You should be able to
- 9:57look at your dog and not think it's likely.
- 9:59Yes, I agree. Which is why I didn't really say
- 10:01anything. I was like, okay, well, if the
- 10:03personality in the traits and everything else match up the
- 10:06end, you want this particular color.
- 10:09Absolutely go for it for me. Color is generally the last
- 10:14thing that I care about because I have very, very high
- 10:17expectations for other things. So it's a real Balancing Act and
- 10:21what's important to you, but I did just want to mention that
- 10:24was why they were one of the reasons that they were very
- 10:27interested in this particular mix.
- 10:29I talked to her a fair amount about what their lifestyle looks
- 10:33like, and it wasn't really me saying, well, you have
- 10:38grandkids, you should consider that.
- 10:39Oh, you have this, you should consider that.
- 10:42It was more like, can you tell me what your day-to-day looks
- 10:46like? Can you tell me what your
- 10:47weekends look like? And she was describing this
- 10:50life. Her grown children live next
- 10:53door with their granddaughter. So, the granddaughters are all
- 10:56Yeah there I forget if it was son but anyway but other grown
- 11:00married couple live across the street, the whole family lives
- 11:04right here. Yes.
- 11:06And so she's describing this to me, she's telling me.
- 11:09The personality is, however, other dogs and she's talking to
- 11:13me about what their life looks like.
- 11:15And throughout her answering my questions.
- 11:18It was like, she started to realize that maybe he's shy,
- 11:24puppy was not necessarily. Lee the way to go.
- 11:27Having said that, like Christy mentioned, what dish?
- 11:30I mean, I gave her some parameters to go on when she
- 11:34went to see the puppy. I asked her if she went to see
- 11:40the puppy. Did she think that she could sit
- 11:45back and really assess how the puppy was behaving and not look
- 11:52at it emotionally because let's face it.
- 11:55Puppies are cute. Adore.
- 11:57Okay. And if you're interested, which
- 12:01I hope you are in the type of puppy.
- 12:03You're going to see. You don't need the emotional
- 12:06part has already there, you're invested.
- 12:09And what do you hear? People say all the time?
- 12:12I went to go see this litter or I went to go see this puppy?
- 12:16Or I went to this rescue to look at this puppy.
- 12:18Just to look how many of those people actually walk away
- 12:24without the puppy. It doesn't he?
- 12:26Open. So we know all puppies are
- 12:29adorable. It's happening.
- 12:30Okay? I really asked her to take a
- 12:33moment and sit back and observe the puppy and ask key questions
- 12:39of the breeder. Well, what?
- 12:42What is the puppy like, around your children?
- 12:45What is the mom? Like, what is the dad?
- 12:48Like, do you know about them? What is there?
- 12:53What is this? Puppy's interaction.
- 12:54When you pick it up and handle it?
- 12:56You do it, snails different real-life scenarios to kind of
- 13:02gain more information, about who the puppy is in personality.
- 13:06This woman is not looking for a project.
- 13:09She's looking for a family pet. We want the puppy to feel
- 13:14comfortable or at least show Comfort some comfortability in
- 13:18scenarios where we know it's going to be have to deal with
- 13:21and it's like one of the traps that everyone always falls into
- 13:26is. Oh, you go and you and I've
- 13:28fallen into this trap. You go you look at the puppies
- 13:31and the one that sits in your lap is the one.
- 13:34And yeah, it happened to me. Why wouldn't it be clearly this
- 13:40puppy loves me. It came and sadly.
- 13:42Yes, I fell for link because he came and rolled over on my shoe.
- 13:48That's adorable. It is adorable.
- 13:50We all know what that story look like.
- 13:54I mean I do get But I think we just have to like try to take a
- 14:00little bit more of a realistic. Look at things when we're going
- 14:03to see ya. I also advised her before she
- 14:07went before. Everyone listen to me before you
- 14:11go make a list of questions that you want to ask.
- 14:14Make sure the question is for yes, because in the moment, you
- 14:18have no questions, everything is flowers and rainbows, and
- 14:23unicorns because puppies are cute and they're in your life.
- 14:26Extracting, and they're distracting from logic.
- 14:29Like, they take all your logic and they just kick it right out
- 14:32the window they do. So you need to sit down
- 14:36beforehand and make a list of important questions for you to
- 14:40ask. I beg of you Christy how do you
- 14:43think a person? Whether it's a breeder rescue
- 14:47because we're everybody. We're talking about all puppies.
- 14:49Today, I'm just using this example because this woman was
- 14:52going to a breeder, how do you think it should be perceived by?
- 14:56Anyone who is working on matching this puppy to this
- 15:01home. If somebody rolls out a list and
- 15:04starts asking questions about the puppy, it should be
- 15:07perceived as that person is invested in the long-term.
- 15:11And they want to make sure that the dog is getting the right fit
- 15:15for a family and the family is getting a right fit for a dog.
- 15:18Yeah, so that's how it should be perceived.
- 15:20I know sometimes that is not the case, but that's absolutely.
- 15:24There should be no problems. Asking questions, whether you're
- 15:28at a rescue, whether you're a breeder, whether there's a line
- 15:32of 50 people behind you to get the same.
- 15:35Poppy questions. Should always be encouraged.
- 15:39Yeah, I totally agree. And I understand that, like,
- 15:43Christy said, there can absolutely be pressure, but the
- 15:47Mantra that I need for you to have in your mind.
- 15:50When feeling that pressure is, I'm going to have this puppy for
- 15:54the rest of its life. And it is going to be a member
- 15:58of my family. So if you can kind of keep that
- 16:03in the back of your mind when you're going and they sit in
- 16:07your lap and they lick you and they kiss you and they just
- 16:10adorable, it might help ground you a little bit to make a sound
- 16:15decision and it might also help you to really take note of that
- 16:19puppies Behavior. If they say, if there's
- 16:21littermates around how they're interacting with their litter
- 16:24mates, how they experience, You the person you brought with you
- 16:29the items that might be in the environment, how they interact
- 16:32with the breeder with or the volunteer somebody that they
- 16:35should already know or would likely already know.
- 16:38Those interactions can tell you a lot of information to about
- 16:42the puppy's personality. I will say, when I started
- 16:46volunteering, I remember distinctly the person who I'm
- 16:50and this was years and years ago, the person who was running
- 16:54the volunteer training. Head when people come in for
- 16:57puppies, you know, like we just kind of give them like five
- 17:00minutes. Here's puppies just pick one
- 17:02because all puppies are pretty much the same.
- 17:05Ooh, which clearly that has shifted thankfully in the rescue
- 17:10world, I don't think many rescues believe that now, but I
- 17:14will say watching my friends who have had puppies from Rescue.
- 17:18There were puppies that I would like that.
- 17:20Puppy in that letter I don't want like that that it needs to
- 17:25go to somebody who Who can experience experience with these
- 17:28different things, you know, and this puppy seems so great and
- 17:32laid back so you could really tell their personality.
- 17:35Even at a really young age just interacting with each other and
- 17:40a lot of those personality traits came to fruition but
- 17:43learn to watch that Inlet Reserve Observer observed.
- 17:46Yeah. I think the other really, really
- 17:49key thing is if at all possible Take a person with you who is
- 17:54not invested in the puppy and the same way as you are.
- 17:57Obviously if you're a married couple, you know, you're going
- 18:01and it's a husband and wife deal, if you're a family you're
- 18:04probably going with your kids and you are going to be impacted
- 18:09by how your kids interact with a puppy and how emotional and
- 18:13attached. They get to a certain puppy.
- 18:15So my advice is always going to be take somebody like Christy
- 18:20along with you and Them have an outsider perspective.
- 18:26I at this point have gone with several friends to go and meet
- 18:30puppies. And given my honest opinion on
- 18:34what I thought in the scenario and the last person I went with
- 18:38told me recently that I will be going with her to pick every
- 18:42puppy that she gets from now on because I am straightforward and
- 18:45honest which is why Christie's my person to go with me because
- 18:49I know that she will be straightforward and honest but
- 18:52you Need after I get my like me out, yes, but you need that
- 18:58level-headed perspective. Ideally, it's someone who
- 19:01understands a little bit about dog behavior, but even if it
- 19:05isn't, if you just can have somebody who has that
- 19:09level-headed perspective that is willing to say to you.
- 19:13When you're really really really want the little puppy named
- 19:16Rover and Rover, seem scared to death and you have three kids at
- 19:20home, that is willing to say to you.
- 19:22I'm not Really sure if Rover is the right choice for Rover, or
- 19:27for your family and these are the reasons why, and this is
- 19:31what I saw. Yeah, I think that's important
- 19:34because I know we're talking about, you need to be logical in
- 19:38going into getting a puppy but also we're not saying that you
- 19:42shouldn't be emotional or overcome with emotion or
- 19:46overcome with joy and those are all like very natural feelings
- 19:50in this process as well. I am.
- 19:53All about embracing those feelings and just living in that
- 19:57moment with those. But then that's why you want
- 20:00someone who isn't getting a puppy or who isn't who
- 20:03emotionally a logical. Yeah.
- 20:06So that you are allowed to have all those emotions but then
- 20:11there's somebody logically saying, okay, let's direct your
- 20:14emotions in this way. Let me ask you some real
- 20:17questions. Yeah, you think the puppy that
- 20:19is resource guarding at six weeks old and it I can get
- 20:23littermates is the right fit, like yeah, yeah.
- 20:26No. I completely agree.
- 20:28And we're not saying we've told you a million times.
- 20:31There's no straight line in dog behavior, just because you see a
- 20:37behavior in a puppy doesn't mean it isn't something you can work
- 20:40with but you have to analyze your life and know.
- 20:45Is this something I have the time to work on Emma, I willing
- 20:49to make the investment. If it does not Not pan out the
- 20:53way I want, or like this woman. Do I just want an easy happy
- 20:58healthy pet? So let me just start out with
- 21:00the puppy who seems like the right fit from the get-go and
- 21:04try to stack the deck in my favor as we move forward because
- 21:08in the end after her and I talking for 45 minutes me giving
- 21:12her tips and everything else. She text me the next day and
- 21:15told me that they never even went to look at the puppy.
- 21:17And once her and her husband talked about our conversation
- 21:21that she realized that Were brushing it and that it would
- 21:25have been a truly emotional decision and they don't think it
- 21:28was the right puppy for them. And you know what, I am thrilled
- 21:32for them. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:33So I would say to like, be open to Opportunities because that
- 21:37was an opportunity. We have other friends who the
- 21:41opportunity to get a puppy came several months before they had
- 21:45plenty. Yes, Little Miss Tova.
- 21:49Yeah. And so that was, that was long
- 21:51before they plant. To be either.
- 21:54But they were open to the opportunity and it was the right
- 21:56fit. So be open to opportunities but
- 21:59also go into those logically. Yeah.
- 22:01And I feel like Tova is it worked out because they were
- 22:07centered in what they were really looking for and they
- 22:11understood what they were looking for.
- 22:13But they also had people around them who were looking at it
- 22:17logically and saying, hey, I really think that this is a good
- 22:22fit for you. That, if you're open to it, you
- 22:24should move forward. Okay?
- 22:26So here's the hardest tip that I'm going to give and sometimes
- 22:29it's not going to be possible. I told her that she should take
- 22:34in all the information ask all of her questions.
- 22:38Take some time with the puppy and then tell their breeder that
- 22:42they would like to talk about it, discuss it that evening and
- 22:46let her know if they were going to move forward with the puppy
- 22:50and I know that in some scenarios.
- 22:53Is this is not possible in some scenarios.
- 22:55You feel pressured in some scenarios, you're on a
- 22:57timetable. I understand all of those
- 23:01points, I respect them. I just want people to make a
- 23:06good solid decision based in real observations so that they
- 23:13can get the right fit because really, that's the best thing
- 23:17for everybody all the way around.
- 23:19So now Christy is going to give all the reasons why this doesn't
- 23:21work. Oh, not at all but I will say in
- 23:26rescue sometimes that's not a Yashin.
- 23:28It's not as puppies are a hot. Commodity they go fast when I
- 23:32went to look at the County shelter with a friend, she
- 23:36called and said, hey, we're driving for over an hour to get
- 23:39there there. Any way you could hold this
- 23:41puppy until I can meet it and they said, absolutely not.
- 23:44She goes, what if I put the payment down on and they said no
- 23:48first come first serve. And by the time we got there,
- 23:50they said oh, like ten minutes ago.
- 23:52The Puppy left. Yeah I was like if I hadn't
- 23:55gotten turned around on two directions we could have got
- 23:59time. I'm so sorry but just know.
- 24:02So in those situations know that you might not have like an
- 24:07overnight to think about it. So go in very prepared you know
- 24:12go in with your questions, go in as prepared as possible there's
- 24:16a lot of things you can do with rescue to perhaps if you know
- 24:19that you're interested in a litter, you can reach out to the
- 24:22rest. You before they're adaptable and
- 24:24say, is there any way I could send these questions to the
- 24:28foster parent? Yes, because these are things
- 24:31that are important to me and I don't want to waste your time.
- 24:33I don't want to waste my time, so if there's no puppies in this
- 24:36litter that fit these things, then I'm okay walking away
- 24:40because I know I won't once I get there, I don't have a chance
- 24:43to say. I'm going to think about it
- 24:44overnight. There's also Fosters every
- 24:47rescue does things a little differently.
- 24:49So there are some Foster's who might allow you to me.
- 24:53The puppies beforehand before they're available for adoption
- 24:56and have some time to think about it, where you maybe don't
- 25:00have to put in your application that very second because it's
- 25:03going to be two or three weeks before they come up for
- 25:05adoption. So, there are some ways to work
- 25:08with that, but just know what you're getting into before you
- 25:11go, if you're going to a County shelter, it really is like a
- 25:15grab and go. Yeah, that sounds so terrible.
- 25:17But it is like go in know that there's high pressure that you
- 25:21need to make a decision. Then if that's not the right fit
- 25:25for you if you know that you cannot make a good decision
- 25:29under high pressure. That's okay.
- 25:31Don't go to that Municipal rescue then maybe go to a rescue
- 25:35that just private fostering or has different protocols that
- 25:39work better for you and your family so that you can get the
- 25:43right fit whether you're going to a breeder or a rescue I
- 25:47totally agree and I think that if you know that you're going to
- 25:51be under the clocks, So to speak, or on a clock to make a
- 25:54decision? I think the preparation is
- 25:57what's really, really important. In addition to what Christie
- 26:00said about asking questions about the the litter, I would
- 26:03also ask questions about the mom and dad, because there might be
- 26:08information about them. That is completely relevant.
- 26:12That would change your mind, one way, or the other.
- 26:15And that's a big factor. I would definitely keep that in
- 26:20mind. When we adopted our loose, A the
- 26:23litter was born and rescue and the rescue had her mom.
- 26:27We went to see her when she was 11 weeks.
- 26:29She was in extremely high demand and we had to make a decision
- 26:34right away as well. This is Heather in 2005 and we
- 26:39we fell different, Heather, well, whatever, another.
- 26:42We did feel pressured, but excited to, to get this puppy,
- 26:47we were absolutely told that Lucy's mom had It's call it dog,
- 26:53selective issues. She didn't end up living with
- 26:56another dog years later, but she absolutely was dog selective at
- 27:00best. I was just like, cool.
- 27:03I still didn't understand the impact of genetics.
- 27:06I still didn't have a full understanding of what exactly
- 27:10that meant and I was all in. Man.
- 27:12I was all in in the end that did affect who Lucy was and she was
- 27:17a litter of five, only two of the puppy survived her and her
- 27:20brother and both of them ended up.
- 27:23Not being able to live with other dogs.
- 27:25There's a lot that goes into that.
- 27:26There are a million things. They were bottle-fed, they
- 27:29couldn't be properly socialized, because they were ill, they
- 27:32didn't get to be with their mom. I mean there's a million factors
- 27:35that go into that, but all that information.
- 27:37Now, I would not have adopted her at this stage in my life
- 27:42with the knowledge that I have. And I think that's part of the
- 27:45reason why we're talking about this because the knowledge is
- 27:48out there and it's experiences that we've had in different
- 27:52scenarios with. Ends ourselves.
- 27:53We want you to understand that. Yes, it's an emotional decision.
- 27:58It's a happy time. We want you to love your puppy.
- 28:00Enjoy your puppy at the same time, if you can prepare
- 28:04beforehand, it could save you time money resources heartache.
- 28:10Everything if it's not the right fit.
- 28:12Yeah, I would say 2005. Christie would have sad if she
- 28:17was going in to look at a puppy, she was coming home with a
- 28:21puppy, like their purse. It wasn't like that wasn't a
- 28:25thing like where I would have asked the right questions and
- 28:28then debated if I can take home a puppy I would have just been
- 28:32like cool. Look how cute this one is.
- 28:34I really like it. Oh, that one's not available.
- 28:36Look how cute this one is. I like it.
- 28:39Yep. I agree.
- 28:40The other thing I was just thinking about was let's say and
- 28:44I'm going to use almost. There's an example because we
- 28:47know everybody over there. I would also say if you go in to
- 28:51look at a puppy and all of the sudden you're like, whoa, this
- 28:55is a lie. You know, you thought it was
- 28:56what you wanted. The puppies are really cute,
- 28:58there's things you like about them.
- 29:00Take a look at the mom. The mom is adoptable if you're
- 29:04going to rescue and you're interested or the mix seems good
- 29:08or any of that. Maybe you need to take a step
- 29:10back and consider. Hey, this mom is great, maybe
- 29:13this is the path I need to go instead.
- 29:15Yeah, and I will also say one piece of advice that I gave a
- 29:19firm recently who was looking at skew.
- 29:22She was like why Really feel like, I mean, I'm me that this
- 29:25is an appointment to meet one dog.
- 29:27But now, this other dog might go up for adoption and that I had
- 29:31met and I wasn't sure about her, but now, I don't know which one
- 29:35and I remember telling her obviously, go with what you can
- 29:39see long term but also, their skin of the other dogs.
- 29:42Like, there's not a shortage of at least in Arizona, I know
- 29:46Seattle, there is a shortage of dogs, but for the most part in
- 29:50the United States, there's not going to NG to be a situation
- 29:54where you pass on a puppy and then you never get another
- 29:57chance to get a puppy. Yeah, like that's just know that
- 30:00you haven't lost your one. True love, there's other
- 30:04options. There's other other fish in the
- 30:06sea to so to speak. There's always available dogs
- 30:09and puppies. So just give yourself a Ford
- 30:12yourself that opportunity to to get the right fit.
- 30:15Yeah because like Christy said there's going to be more
- 30:18availability and it is more important that you find.
- 30:23Dog. That's the right fit for you
- 30:25than just a fit and it's not your obligation to save that
- 30:30puppy. It's not your obligation to
- 30:32purchase that puppy. You should never feel obligated.
- 30:35It's a decision that you're making.
- 30:37That is a long-term life-altering decision.
- 30:41I totally agree. I don't want anyone to feel
- 30:44pressured to do that ever. No matter the scenario.
- 30:47Yeah, yeah. And I know, I like, I had some
- 30:50friends who went to look out, Rottweiler Puppies actually,
- 30:53well, the lamb and they got there and it was a junkyard.
- 30:57And the mom was a junkyard dog who had been bred with another
- 31:00Rottweiler, and it was the last puppy.
- 31:02Loved malnourished in terrible conditions.
- 31:06And I remember, even at that point, I thought, oh, I don't
- 31:10know if that's a great idea, but they said we just couldn't leave
- 31:14her there. So, we paid reader the hundred
- 31:17dollars, or whatever it was and they brought this puppy home
- 31:21because they had this Emotional savior complex, and not in a bad
- 31:26way, but they wanted they this puppy.
- 31:29Like, and it feels. Let me tell you guys, nobody, we
- 31:32like to save things because it is good to say, I don't feel
- 31:36very well. Go into thinking, well, if I
- 31:56save this dog, they inherently know, and all dogs inherently
- 32:00know and then they are thankful to me the rest of their lives.
- 32:04Like that's not a thing, that's not a thing.
- 32:06And sure enough. This Rottweiler was very
- 32:09sketchy. I liked her personally, they let
- 32:11me be introduced to her without a lot of warning.
- 32:14So, I just came in and was not scared of her because I love her
- 32:17at Wyler's and was like, oh, hey and said, hi to all the dogs.
- 32:21And the honors like, oh, wow! She Growl out.
- 32:23You were short. He and I was like, okay, okay.
- 32:25And they're like, you're one of the only people that she hasn't
- 32:29been. Well, you also know that we
- 32:31approach a dog this was years ago.
- 32:33Oh really? Look I just went in for it so
- 32:38she did have a lot of social issues with human beings and not
- 32:43being sociable with people and they were always having people
- 32:47over so that I think they would have realized now that that was
- 32:52not the right thing. Bit.
- 32:53But they've definitely let the emotions.
- 32:55Get the better of them. Yeah, I know so many people over
- 32:59the years who have done the exact same thing where they felt
- 33:02like they needed to save the dog from whatever scenario.
- 33:05They were in save The Puppy and I do get where that comes from,
- 33:10I absolutely understand. But then the flip side of that
- 33:14is the mom continuing to being used in that way.
- 33:18As a commodity, I just there's the emotional factor in this is,
- 33:22I think Perspective on that comes from growing up in a
- 33:25community, where it's the puppy mill capital of the world, I
- 33:28grew up in Pennsylvania. Puppy mills are highly prevalent
- 33:32even today. And so many people will do that,
- 33:36they're like, well, I feel bad for the puppy, it's stuck in a
- 33:38life in a cage and blah, blah, blah.
- 33:39And I'm like, yeah, but now the mom is too, so there's
- 33:43repercussions to that, you know. Yeah, that was so Doom and Gloom
- 33:48you. And I know that argument is
- 33:50always like, well, it's not the puppies.
- 33:52All right, you are so right? It's not the yes, but we also
- 33:57are not short on dogs that puppies that from legitimate
- 34:02rescues and we are not short on ethically bred dogs either.
- 34:08So there's options to not support that business.
- 34:12Yes. You know, I totally, we always
- 34:15like right now it's such a boom of supporting small own
- 34:19business. All these small owned
- 34:21businesses. Let's not Port bad businesses so
- 34:25that we can support good businesses even when it comes to
- 34:29two puppies. I don't think we usually think
- 34:31of it that way because it's hard to think of puppies as a
- 34:35business, but it absolutely is. You're paying for them, whether
- 34:39you're adopting money buying. Yes.
- 34:42Yeah, I think this episode will go nicely into what we plan to
- 34:46do this summer. We plan to talk about ethical
- 34:49breeding but also ethical rescues.
- 34:52I Think considering both of those things.
- 34:55And FYI, if you're buying from a pet store, your puppy is coming
- 34:59from either, a commercial breeder, or a puppy mill. 100%.
- 35:04Unless there are some that some pet store General Electric or
- 35:08no? Yes.
- 35:09Your profit pet store. Yes I know in Arizona we
- 35:13definitely have like a rescue. That is a pet store in a pet
- 35:16stairs. I think the other interesting
- 35:19point that goes along with that is even in the best of scenario.
- 35:24When breeders and rescues do everything they can to support.
- 35:30The mom to plant will rescues, not planning but to Support the
- 35:35mom support, the litter enrichment activities and
- 35:38different stimulation activities based on developmental periods
- 35:43in the puppies lives. And so all of the things that
- 35:47are correct, even when they're going through the motions to do
- 35:52everything with the best of intentions shit goes wrong.
- 35:55So if in those scenarios with rescue ethical rescues and
- 36:01ethical breeders, they do everything right to stack the
- 36:03deck in their favor. / and shit, still goes wrong, we do not want
- 36:06to support people who are not doing anything and then just
- 36:11pumping out puppies because the chances of something going wrong
- 36:15there or much much higher. Absolutely, like Christy said,
- 36:20we're going to be doing some episodes this Summer that were
- 36:23really excited about. We're going to be doing episodes
- 36:27where we talk about what we think, ethical rescue and
- 36:31ethical breeding looks like and then we're actually Going to be
- 36:34interviewing some people that were super pumped about and then
- 36:38I think we're going to wrap everything up talking about how
- 36:42breeders and rescues can work together and how it can benefit
- 36:45the dogs and people which I can't wait.
- 36:47And then since I'm in the business of puppies, I'm super
- 36:53excited because I am working on an online course that is
- 36:57focusing on teaching people how to find an ethical breeder
- 37:02because that Is not easy and what all goes into being able to
- 37:08do that and what to look for and red flags.
- 37:11So I'm excited about that coming out this summer as well.
- 37:16It does about that too, because I've had so many friends come to
- 37:20me and ask me questions and then I just have to be like, oh no,
- 37:24Heather help me. No, I have some words, this done
- 37:28that well, and the reason that I ended up doing this is because I
- 37:33have helped So many people over the years.
- 37:36I can't even tell you. I have spent hours upon hours of
- 37:40looking at websites. I'll get random websites sent to
- 37:43me. Hey, does this breeder look
- 37:44decent my friends thinking about going to them and I look it up
- 37:47for 30 seconds and I'm like, red flag red flag and I love helping
- 37:50people do that, but I don't have a lot of spare time.
- 37:54So I decided to kind of put everything in a course for
- 37:56people, it's going to be super affordable for people to be able
- 37:59to do all the steps. And then once you learn it, I'm
- 38:02excited to share my knowledge. And all the kind of experiences
- 38:06that I've been through and what has taken me to where I am now
- 38:10in my life. Yeah.
- 38:11And I think why I'm excited about it because I mean let's be
- 38:14honest. Heather's kind of the breeding
- 38:16aspect of this podcast and I'm kind of the rock where am I?
- 38:22But why I'm excited is because then we can help people avoid
- 38:28going to Backyard breeders. Yeah, even if you're against
- 38:31breeding, this is still going to be useful because As an ethical
- 38:35breeder, even if you feel like that's not for you, let's send
- 38:39people to a breeder who stands behind their puppies and takes
- 38:42puppies back so that were not contributing to two dogs in the
- 38:46shelter. So that's why I'm excited.
- 38:48Yeah, can start people out who aren't interested in rescue
- 38:53dogs? That's okay.
- 38:54We all have friends who are like, I'm not getting a rescue.
- 38:58That gives us their options to be able to talk through this and
- 39:02yes, fine. You're not To go to rescue.
- 39:05That wouldn't be my choice but let me at least point you in the
- 39:08right direction. Yeah, that you can avoid going
- 39:11to a backyard breeder. I think just one who doesn't
- 39:14deserve it when we get into this this summer.
- 39:17We're going to give you examples so it can give you talking
- 39:20points going forward, as we give sort of our breakdown of what is
- 39:25ethical versus not for us in rescue and inbreeding and then
- 39:30interview actual people who are from ethical Gil.
- 39:34And then also interviewing an ethical breeder.
- 39:37I think, by the end of the summer, we're going to change
- 39:40some people's minds. I really hope you guys will
- 39:42stick with us through this journey because I think there's
- 39:45a lot of knowledge on both sides to be gained.
- 39:48I think, people who are breeder, only are gonna learn some really
- 39:52valuable things about rescue. I think people who are rescue
- 39:55only are going to gain some insight about ethical breeding
- 39:59to just try and go into it with an open mind.
- 40:02And if you come out the other side and you're like, Nope, I
- 40:04still feel the way. I feel cool, but we appreciate
- 40:06you going to journey and have a mind open enough to even listen.
- 40:10Yeah. To have a dialogue about it.
- 40:12Yeah, for sure because that's what we're all about.
- 40:14Yeah so to wrap this up we've gone over a lot of different
- 40:19scenarios and things to consider when getting a puppy.
- 40:22So kind of a rundown, a quick rundown, ask questions, take
- 40:26time to think about the puppy. That's the right fit for you.
- 40:29Bring someone who is not as emotionally invested and Of you
- 40:34logical advice. What else?
- 40:37Heather have a plan before you go.
- 40:39So, go find the puppy of your dreams, if that's what you want
- 40:42or in Christie's case, don't don't.
- 40:46Yeah. All right.
