- 0:10Speaker 1: Now.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Well, another week almost over and school holidays starting for
- 0:14Speaker 3: most states around the country if they haven't already. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 3: talking to the U queens Land. We're halfway through hours.
- 0:19Speaker 3: My name's doctor Justin Colson and it's great to have
- 0:21Speaker 3: you joining us for the Happy Families Podcast for Friday edition.
- 0:25Speaker 3: A while back, I've had a chat with a guy,
- 0:27Speaker 3: an author, an entrepreneur, an all round delightful human by
- 0:32Speaker 3: the name of Jeremy mcveen. He wrote a book called
- 0:35Speaker 3: The Fatherhood. He founded an organization called The Fatherhood, and
- 0:40Speaker 3: I was talking to him about fatherhood and whether it
- 0:42Speaker 3: turned out to be what he thought it might be.
- 0:45Speaker 1: No, no, father would constantly changes. So it's the highest
- 0:51Speaker 1: of highs and the lowest of lows, so the greatest challenges.
- 0:54Speaker 1: It's like one thing we say that with the Fatherhood,
- 0:57Speaker 1: it's like the Champions League of manhood. You know, you've
- 0:59Speaker 1: got to find this new level of patience and energy
- 1:03Speaker 1: and resilience. And but so no, I think I don't
- 1:06Speaker 1: think it could possibly be because it just this constantly
- 1:08Speaker 1: evolving challenge and until you've done it. I think you
- 1:12Speaker 1: can kind of realize that we are help people. Like,
- 1:17Speaker 1: no one told me to be this hard. You know,
- 1:19Speaker 1: when everyone's like, oh, you can have kids here would
- 1:21Speaker 1: be lovely. Oh yeah, it's lovely. At times, it's pretty hard.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I've got some three kids down here. One of them
- 1:26Speaker 1: is really sick. We've been in the emergency department a
- 1:28Speaker 1: couple of times this week. Like it's tough. Yeah, and
- 1:31Speaker 1: that's just this week, and next week it'll be new challenges.
- 1:33Speaker 1: So I think it's been. It's wonderful and fulfilling and
- 1:38Speaker 1: certainly defining for me, and hence the fatherhood like it's
- 1:40Speaker 1: I can't imagine life without my kids. But I don't
- 1:43Speaker 1: think it's played out exactly like I thought it would.
- 1:46Speaker 1: I think it's hard to know.
- 1:48Speaker 2: I'm wondering, Jeremy, if, through all of the study and
- 1:52Speaker 2: research that you've done, and the conversations you've had with
- 1:56Speaker 2: other men, specifically about their journey in fathering, if it
- 2:00Speaker 2: has changed the way you see your dad.
- 2:05Speaker 1: That's a really good question. Kindly, it has. It's given
- 2:09Speaker 1: me much greater understanding of my dad, much greater. Not
- 2:14Speaker 1: that I didn't have empathy, but I think I understand
- 2:16Speaker 1: him better and what I'll give you one perspective on
- 2:20Speaker 1: that as an example where I think, as parents we
- 2:23Speaker 1: do the best that we can and try and do
- 2:25Speaker 1: the best we can for our kids based on our
- 2:27Speaker 1: own experience. And my dad sadly lost his dad when
- 2:30Speaker 1: he was thirteen years old. It's very sad for him
- 2:33Speaker 1: and obviously shaped his youth in a huge way. And
- 2:37Speaker 1: when I grew up, I never knew I my mum
- 2:39Speaker 1: and dad were so determined to give us all these
- 2:42Speaker 1: opportunities to play sport, and whenever I played footy, your cricket,
- 2:45Speaker 1: they'd be on the sidelines, any time of day, they
- 2:47Speaker 1: were there. And through becoming a father and having conversations
- 2:51Speaker 1: with my parents more about this sort of stuff, I
- 2:53Speaker 1: realized that my dad was so determined to be there
- 2:55Speaker 1: at seven am on a Saturday morning when there's jew
- 2:58Speaker 1: in the grass because his dad was never there. He
- 3:00Speaker 1: never had so he really missed that opportunity, and he
- 3:03Speaker 1: was the kid without his dad and on the sidelines
- 3:04Speaker 1: and really upsetting growing up. So then he's looked to
- 3:08Speaker 1: express that and provide that for them, my brothers. It's
- 3:11Speaker 1: a really beautiful thing that he's done so I have
- 3:13Speaker 1: a greater understanding and empathy of him and appreciation for
- 3:20Speaker 1: what he and my mum did for me and my
- 3:21Speaker 1: brothers growing up now that I'm trying to do it
- 3:23Speaker 1: for my kids.
- 3:25Speaker 3: That's Jeremy mcveen, the founder of The Fatherhood and co
