- 0:06Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences. Listener discretion is advised. Welcome to
- 0:12Speaker 1: Patriot's Unfiltered. I'm just watching the highlights of the Monday
- 0:17Speaker 1: night game last night, and I'm getting angry all over again.
- 0:20Speaker 1: It was more, you know, explosive from a dead start,
- 0:24Speaker 1: as they said. Yeah, they threw it Howard on important plays.
- 0:29Speaker 1: This is my point with their best play though, you
- 0:31Speaker 1: know what I mean, like, why is that their best play? Well,
- 0:33Speaker 1: that's what they did. I mean I knew it was
- 0:34Speaker 1: gonna happen, know it's gonna happen, and wanting it to
- 0:37Speaker 1: happen at two different things. Don't tell me you wanted
- 0:39Speaker 1: it to happen that you got so mad. They may
- 0:42Speaker 1: have gotten bailed out with a penalty, because I do
- 0:44Speaker 1: think he grabbed well never, but he was never exactly.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Don't tell me that's the best play. Justin Tommy Kern
- 0:52Speaker 1: reporting Patricia's upset with Kendrick Bourne after a missed preseason meeting.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Any so that I was a round, I guess there
- 1:01Speaker 1: are you calling hardy? Yes, yes, it's fun. I was
- 1:05Speaker 1: listening in every time that would have I know Fred's chuckle. Yes,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and you were that's the best part. He should charge
- 1:11Speaker 1: me Rent Kevin's and Delaware. Hey Kevin, Hey, hey, hey.
- 1:20Speaker 1: This is Patriot's Unfiltered fueled by Duncan. All right, welcome
- 1:26Speaker 1: into Patriots Unfiltered. We are coming at you live from
- 1:30Speaker 1: Jillette Stadium. It's it's your boy Deucee hosting it. Sorry, guys,
- 1:33Speaker 1: due back in the host chair. No, no, no Fred today,
- 1:35Speaker 1: just this is Paul and Mike. This is the this
- 1:38Speaker 1: is the A one team A one. I like that.
- 1:41Speaker 1: The original A team was was idiots. We know who
- 1:43Speaker 1: that was. Okay, I can't, but you're right there, Deuce.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I like it. I just need you and you yell
- 1:49Speaker 1: a little more. We got into it a little bit
- 1:51Speaker 1: yesterday about you know what, I noticing that little argument
- 1:54Speaker 1: um and I don't know if this happens all the time,
- 1:56Speaker 1: but suddenly my voice went to a place that I'm
- 1:58Speaker 1: not really comfortable with. You had a new octave. You
- 2:00Speaker 1: can't tell me. I'm like, where did that come from? Well?
- 2:05Speaker 1: I don't know. Not good much good, much like the
- 2:07Speaker 1: Patriots offense. We don't know. We don't know where that
- 2:08Speaker 1: came from. We don't know where this came from. But
- 2:10Speaker 1: busy day here today, and it won't be just Paul
- 2:13Speaker 1: and I. We we were gonna welcome back Evan Lazarre.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Finally he'll be on for the second half hour. But
- 2:18Speaker 1: I got a little practice update one that we're kind
- 2:20Speaker 1: of interested in more so than normal because we want
- 2:23Speaker 1: to see how mac Jones looks physically. I don't know. Yeah,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we haven't really grilled Evan yet on the practice report too,
- 2:29Speaker 1: so I hope he's really you know, looking at that,
- 2:31Speaker 1: like what's the mood that that question might throw him
- 2:34Speaker 1: off a little bit. You know, what do you mean?
- 2:35Speaker 1: It's like, I don't they don't have mood on all
- 2:37Speaker 1: twenty two. Yeah, it's just straight up football here. You
- 2:42Speaker 1: guys want to know what kind of concepts they were
- 2:44Speaker 1: running out there? Yeah, it was cover three, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 1: a man under a guy over the top. So you
- 2:49Speaker 1: can you can do the dance, Paul, But that's what
- 2:53Speaker 1: it is. It's a dance. Anybody could do it. I'm
- 2:55Speaker 1: a good dancer. Yeah, can you do it correctly? Right? Well,
- 3:00Speaker 1: we're gonna find out. Well, we'll grill him. We got
- 3:02Speaker 1: some an early preview of evans reaction to to the
- 3:05Speaker 1: L twenty two and the film breakdown, and it's probably
- 3:08Speaker 1: about what you would expect it to be, maybe not
- 3:10Speaker 1: though maybe a little bit surprised that he was a
- 3:11Speaker 1: little fired up. But I'm excited I got a chance
- 3:14Speaker 1: to speak to him today for the first time because
- 3:16Speaker 1: I'm down in the dungeon now and I don't see
- 3:18Speaker 1: you guys as regularly, and I was taking a little
- 3:21Speaker 1: bit aback that he, you know, on watching it at
- 3:25Speaker 1: a second time, felt even worse about it, as he
- 3:28Speaker 1: still knows how I was supposed to work. I thought,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you're supposed to feel better when you watch the film
- 3:31Speaker 1: the second time, and I'd see the optimism. People were
- 3:33Speaker 1: open everywhere. But now we'll have having on about one o'clock.
- 3:36Speaker 1: But Bill's going right now, so we'll get, you know,
- 3:38Speaker 1: some some news from that press contract. We do have
- 3:41Speaker 1: kind of a lot of things and it's um now.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I really feel like, I know last week was the
- 3:45Speaker 1: start of the season. I really feel like you started
- 3:47Speaker 1: to settle in now to the normal quote unquote normal
- 3:52Speaker 1: routine of Sunday, you know, Sunday games. You know, Wednesday,
- 3:56Speaker 1: they're back at it here. They'll be practicing Wednesday Thursday day.
- 4:00Speaker 1: We'll get practice reports every day, you know, the practice
- 4:03Speaker 1: participation report that Fred likes distress, it's not the injury
- 4:06Speaker 1: report that um and then like like Mike said, well,
- 4:10Speaker 1: we'll hear from Aaron Evan probably what an hour or
- 4:14Speaker 1: so yet, I think practice at twelve forty So he's
- 4:16Speaker 1: gonna go out there and take a look. See who's there.
- 4:19Speaker 1: See on Mac Jones is moving? Guys will getting the
- 4:21Speaker 1: locker later when I'm doing my my real radio yeump
- 4:25Speaker 1: that up, Lgren, Maz and Bill. As Mike said, I
- 4:30Speaker 1: just looking over the shoulder here I see Bill at
- 4:33Speaker 1: the podium, so he is, uh, he's often running. So
- 4:35Speaker 1: we'll hopefully Matt, if you can sort of keep one
- 4:38Speaker 1: ear on that what Bill saying, maybe anything interesting? You
- 4:41Speaker 1: can let us know, like, well he just cut mac Jones.
- 4:44Speaker 1: We probably want to get that into the show if
- 4:46Speaker 1: you know, if that happens, kind of he's hurt, right,
- 4:48Speaker 1: but it's true designation injury no no, but it certainly
- 4:54Speaker 1: seems like mac Um you know, dodged a bullet if
- 4:57Speaker 1: there was, you know, it seems like he's getting or
- 5:00Speaker 1: physically based on all the reports that we're hearing, he
- 5:02Speaker 1: did speak, um, you know, late on Yeah, and he's
- 5:06Speaker 1: supposed to and he's supposed to come on today, so
- 5:09Speaker 1: that's probably a good sign. But you know, I still
- 5:11Speaker 1: like think, like we talked about yesterday, I don't know
- 5:14Speaker 1: if he's out of the woods completely at the very
- 5:15Speaker 1: I mean, he's probably going to be dealing with a
- 5:17Speaker 1: little bit of pain and discomfort I would imagine. Um,
- 5:20Speaker 1: But that hitt he took was that was that was tough.
- 5:23Speaker 1: That was tough, and I think he landed. Yeah, I mean,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and that's why I'm not so sure about the spasms.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I was kind of with you on that yesterday. We
- 5:29Speaker 1: didn't spasms. That seems more like a general tourney. I
- 5:32Speaker 1: heard Tony and Mike that just called him Tony and Mike.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I feel like people that I can't call him that
- 5:37Speaker 1: Felger math, but they seem kind of like mass spasms.
- 5:40Speaker 1: It's just they always just sort of seemed like whatever
- 5:44Speaker 1: you think, I'm gonna go opposite, right, Um, but that
- 5:46Speaker 1: comes fact. But I felt like he got hit, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 1: he got high load. And when he he did admit
- 5:52Speaker 1: that that he thought that was the play where whatever
- 5:56Speaker 1: you don't want to deem it injury you know occurred, right.
- 5:59Speaker 1: He had said that the roughering to pass or play.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I don't know. Do you get spasms when you get
- 6:05Speaker 1: hit and land hard on your back? I don't know.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I've I mean, I've had I've had some badas too,
- 6:11Speaker 1: but never like I feel like a spas. And we
- 6:13Speaker 1: welcome all our listeners to call in and with your
- 6:15Speaker 1: own your back problems and see if whether or not
- 6:17Speaker 1: you could have played in an NFL game, because that's
- 6:19Speaker 1: very relevant. Like it'll muscle like kind of twitching and
- 6:22Speaker 1: you can't get it to stop. That's my impression of
- 6:24Speaker 1: what especial. So maybe maybe that is what happened, and
- 6:27Speaker 1: hopefully it's worked itself out and he'll be, uh, you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: no limitations at all this week, And uh, I don't expect.
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't know how you feel. I don't expect to
- 6:35Speaker 1: see him on the injury point I did. I think
- 6:37Speaker 1: it's going to be a non factor. Interesting, I hope. So,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I don't know. I was kind of expecting him him
- 6:41Speaker 1: to be but yeah, I guess we'll find out this afternoon.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And Adrian Phillips another maybe injury situation to monitor with
- 6:48Speaker 1: a rib injury I'll look like he just kind of landed. Funny,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I was watching that one a little bit close and
- 6:52Speaker 1: uh and a couple moves to talk about too. We
- 6:55Speaker 1: can because there's another one, Phillips rib injury. I would
- 6:59Speaker 1: feel better if you got hitting the ribs. Yeah, you said,
- 7:02Speaker 1: kind of felt like he twisted. So now I'm wonder
- 7:05Speaker 1: is that like a muscular kind of injury maybe, uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: like an oblique kind of problem or something like a
- 7:12Speaker 1: rib cage like muscle separate intercostal tissue. Will I don't
- 7:16Speaker 1: know what that means, um, but I'm going to take
- 7:18Speaker 1: the word of the Holy Cross guy. Sounded like you
- 7:21Speaker 1: know what you were talking. I mean you also the
- 7:22Speaker 1: lord of the guy who broke his own ribs on
- 7:24Speaker 1: a beach falling point. But again blunt, you know, blunt,
- 7:28Speaker 1: fullest trauma of the side, which I still feel that
- 7:32Speaker 1: doesn't it still doesn't feel one hundred percent right. Maybe
- 7:34Speaker 1: I should go see a doctor for about that. But
- 7:37Speaker 1: I love to hear from you guys, though, of course,
- 7:39Speaker 1: as always, give us a buzz eight five five pats
- 7:42Speaker 1: five hundred, shoot us an email, web radio at Patriots
- 7:45Speaker 1: dot com. A couple of little things to get to though,
- 7:48Speaker 1: before we jump into you guys in your calls and emails,
- 7:51Speaker 1: uh move last night time Montgomery a little bit of
- 7:54Speaker 1: a surprise moving to injured reserve little Jordan Humphrey getting
- 7:57Speaker 1: promoted to the fifty three man roster, and they made
- 7:59Speaker 1: it official then with the open practice squad spot that
- 8:02Speaker 1: Marcus Cannon, the old tackle is is back. Played I
- 8:06Speaker 1: think six games last year for Houston after taking twenty
- 8:09Speaker 1: twenty off. Definitely an older guy. I mean I kind
- 8:12Speaker 1: of have mixed feelings on before. Yeah, I mean we
- 8:14Speaker 1: touched on it yesterday a little bit. I have mixed
- 8:17Speaker 1: feelings on it just because on one hand, it's I
- 8:19Speaker 1: think it shows like how desperate you kind of are
- 8:21Speaker 1: to acquire some tackle depth. But I also always really
- 8:25Speaker 1: liked Marcus Cannon and felt like, you know, even in
- 8:27Speaker 1: seventeen eighteen, those years, he was still playing pretty well.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I don't know if he's still got it four years later.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I just liked the guy. I think he's had some
- 8:34Speaker 1: some good years here. They probably passed him, but you know,
- 8:38Speaker 1: one of those pieces that you hope you don't need,
- 8:40Speaker 1: but I don't know, maybe he's got something left and
- 8:41Speaker 1: maybe he can push these guys. What worries me about
- 8:43Speaker 1: it is what we saw probably in the summer is
- 8:47Speaker 1: probably how they feel. Like justin Haran, they probably don't
- 8:51Speaker 1: feel great. Yadny could used. I think that he was
- 8:55Speaker 1: out there and battling some injuries at times. I think
- 8:58Speaker 1: when he played, I think just I just called him
- 9:01Speaker 1: to cold choose, you know, it's just I have to
- 9:04Speaker 1: always get that one. I think just played reasonably well
- 9:08Speaker 1: when he played UM, but I think injuries have been
- 9:12Speaker 1: a problem with him. My fear is that the coaching
- 9:15Speaker 1: staff saw the same stuff that we saw, and we're like,
- 9:18Speaker 1: if we have to make a move here. I don't
- 9:21Speaker 1: really feel comfortable, and I definitely do not feel comfortable
- 9:24Speaker 1: with Marcus Cannon, who I am not any win Narra
- 9:25Speaker 1: as high on as a Patriot as you evidently were.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It was kind of before, I don't I mean, And again,
- 9:31Speaker 1: I like it's it's all relative right now to what
- 9:33Speaker 1: they had. I think when he played, he was the
- 9:35Speaker 1: prototypical guy who turned it on in a in a
- 9:37Speaker 1: contract year. I think there's a lot of Trent Brown there.
- 9:39Speaker 1: Let's put it that one that I think I think
- 9:42Speaker 1: in contract years, with the years that he generally played
- 9:45Speaker 1: sixteen games and you know, stayed on the beam and
- 9:47Speaker 1: when he didn't. Yeah, yeah, all right, we'll move on
- 9:50Speaker 1: from But I do like him. I like him better
- 9:52Speaker 1: than Trent Brown so and and if he could, if
- 9:55Speaker 1: he were healthy enough to play, I mean, I don't
- 9:57Speaker 1: know what his back situation is. Yeah, and I don't
- 9:59Speaker 1: know if I I'm speaking out of turn here because
- 10:01Speaker 1: I really wonder with Montgomery. Well, that's weird. He had
- 10:05Speaker 1: an injury two weeks ago and now he played and
- 10:07Speaker 1: he wasn't. He went on IR a week after I
- 10:09Speaker 1: thought he was going to go on IR. That's weird.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Can you provide any insight on that? I cannot, But
- 10:14Speaker 1: I will say that I didn't see you're all over
- 10:19Speaker 1: the Twitter machine more so than I am. Fortunately, I
- 10:22Speaker 1: didn't really see anybody speculate as to whether or not
- 10:25Speaker 1: this was like short term long term season ending. I
- 10:29Speaker 1: didn't see anybody indicate anything on him. We know he'll
- 10:32Speaker 1: have to miss four games because i R is automatic,
- 10:35Speaker 1: but will he be ready to return after four games?
- 10:38Speaker 1: I didn't see anybody speculate on that. Did I miss it? No?
- 10:41Speaker 1: I didn't see it either, And I mean I guess
- 10:43Speaker 1: at this point we're wondering is it connected to the
- 10:46Speaker 1: ankle pseudo knee injury that he had last week from
- 10:49Speaker 1: Vegas or is it something new, something got exasperbated. We don't.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I do not know that. I don't know. Obviously he
- 10:54Speaker 1: wouldn't have played if he was hurt. No, let's give
- 10:57Speaker 1: let him give it a try. No, but he maybe,
- 11:01Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know. We'll see. Uh. And
- 11:03Speaker 1: then finally little Jordan getting promoted, so you know, give
- 11:06Speaker 1: them a little bit more receiver depth though, But is
- 11:08Speaker 1: it pushing Yeah, the story here, That's why I when
- 11:13Speaker 1: you mentioned Humphrey, it is still born, like everybody is.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I see what I did there, it's still born, still born. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: that's not There's a lot of opportunity with that last name,
- 11:22Speaker 1: born again. You know, he had a big if he
- 11:25Speaker 1: had a big game this weekend on PFW's cover, I
- 11:28Speaker 1: imagine born Again would be in the mix. Absolutely chef's
- 11:31Speaker 1: kiss with that one. Um. But there were a lot
- 11:34Speaker 1: of sort of layers to the story as it unfolded yesterday,
- 11:39Speaker 1: and Tommy Tommy Karen was the one who had all
- 11:41Speaker 1: the information that everybody, of course they all knew him
- 11:44Speaker 1: confirmed they all knew about it, evidently just decided to
- 11:46Speaker 1: wait till Tom Karren got all the credit for it. Um.
- 11:49Speaker 1: I love the media. UM. I thought that the the
- 11:57Speaker 1: butting heads with Matt Patricia angle, to me, I found
- 12:00Speaker 1: a little interesting. And I'm kind of as much as
- 12:03Speaker 1: I'm giving Tom credit for breaking the story because he did,
- 12:07Speaker 1: I'm kind of backpedaling away from that a little bit
- 12:11Speaker 1: because of what Bill has been telling us. You know,
- 12:15Speaker 1: all through training camp, it's me like, you don't worry
- 12:18Speaker 1: about you know, you don't need to worry about who's
- 12:20Speaker 1: calling the place. You don't need to it's a process
- 12:22Speaker 1: with Ultimately, it's my responsibility. It's all on me. So
- 12:26Speaker 1: now that there's a problem with your personnel usage, I'm
- 12:30Speaker 1: not going to put that on somebody else. I'm going
- 12:32Speaker 1: to put it on Bill. So maybe it's because Matt
- 12:35Speaker 1: Patricia has been butting heads with Kendrick Bourne, but ultimately
- 12:38Speaker 1: the decision to de emphasize them to the extent that
- 12:40Speaker 1: they did on Sunday, Mike, I think falls on Bill. Right. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 1: I agree, And I mean I'm glad you said that, Paul,
- 12:47Speaker 1: because I don't know what the word is, like you
- 12:50Speaker 1: just you kind of something like your spidy sense gets
- 12:52Speaker 1: tingling a little bit when you hear something like that,
- 12:54Speaker 1: and you just knew that everything was now going to
- 12:56Speaker 1: come at Matt Patricia And I don't know, do you
- 13:00Speaker 1: really think, Bill, We've had a good summer so far.
- 13:02Speaker 1: We speculated a lot of things in the summer that,
- 13:05Speaker 1: unfortunately for the Patriots, have actually been born out. So
- 13:09Speaker 1: what it did? Again? But we talked about Kendrick Bourne
- 13:13Speaker 1: at length. What are those days that we had the
- 13:15Speaker 1: live practices when we were on the radio, and a
- 13:18Speaker 1: lot of the things that we've talked about have now
- 13:20Speaker 1: sort of continued. We talked a lot about if the
- 13:23Speaker 1: offense is sporadic, it's going to fall all on the coaches.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It's not going to have anything to do with the players.
- 13:28Speaker 1: You know. Now this is like a double dip of
- 13:32Speaker 1: of blame deflection. It has nothing to do with Mac
- 13:34Speaker 1: Jones and the players that they scored seven points. It's
- 13:37Speaker 1: not just the bad play calling. Now it's no Kendrick Bourne,
- 13:43Speaker 1: which you know, I guess I don't know if you know,
- 13:45Speaker 1: but if Kendrick Bourne play, they just scored forty nine,
- 13:47Speaker 1: the other name absolutely, you know, So it I just
- 13:52Speaker 1: I keep going back to the way Bill said it.
- 13:55Speaker 1: It's me. It's ultimately my responsibility for all of it. Yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and I apply. I think he's right, and that's the
- 14:04Speaker 1: way I've always gone about it, but others don't. There's
- 14:06Speaker 1: one more weird piece of it to me too, is
- 14:08Speaker 1: that a lot of these reports were then followed up
- 14:11Speaker 1: with he's expected to be more involved going forward, like
- 14:14Speaker 1: they're they like I noticed multiple things of like wow,
- 14:19Speaker 1: that little bit. So I'll tell you what we'll have now. Okay,
- 14:22Speaker 1: So I like to I like to give you my
- 14:24Speaker 1: vocate me. I like to give you my narratives ahead
- 14:26Speaker 1: of time, right like Fred always like he goes, you
- 14:28Speaker 1: get an arguments with people before they even happen, like
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's it's not meant to be an argument. But now
- 14:32Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you if that's the case, Mike. Yeah.
- 14:35Speaker 1: And now, by definition, he has to be more involved
- 14:38Speaker 1: on Sunday three SAPs, otherwise he'll be inactive. Right, So
- 14:43Speaker 1: let's just say he plays thirty snaps on Sunday and
- 14:47Speaker 1: catches four passes. Good solid game. Bill will get the
- 14:52Speaker 1: credit for overruling that Patricia. You watch you watch no wrong.
- 14:59Speaker 1: He will get the credit for stepping in and smoothing
- 15:03Speaker 1: things over and making sure that he was more of
- 15:05Speaker 1: a part of the plan. That's what will happen if
- 15:07Speaker 1: if Kendrick Bourne has a good game on Sunday and
- 15:10Speaker 1: it's still it still won't explain to me why, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 1: if there's been more going on. And then we treaded
- 15:15Speaker 1: on a lot of this territory yesterday of just you know,
- 15:17Speaker 1: here we are going into week two that you're still
- 15:19Speaker 1: kind of messing around with it. At what point, you know,
- 15:22Speaker 1: do you move on? But I get people, really, I
- 15:26Speaker 1: just Mampatricia just triggers so many people. I think that's
- 15:28Speaker 1: such an element this year that I think I might
- 15:31Speaker 1: have underplayed a little bit. It's just people. And I
- 15:33Speaker 1: understand don't really want him to be successful. I do, Oh,
- 15:36Speaker 1: I don't know about want or whatever, but I do
- 15:39Speaker 1: think that he triggers a lot of people. I like
- 15:41Speaker 1: your your analysis there and I and I understand why.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's a guy that when he was here,
- 15:48Speaker 1: and I say this a whole time defensively, it got
- 15:50Speaker 1: better when he left. And I was believe me, I
- 15:54Speaker 1: was one of the naysayers, the doubters and the whole
- 15:57Speaker 1: Are they really more aggressive? And then you know, you
- 15:59Speaker 1: watch that go forward and you're like, yeah, they are.
- 16:03Speaker 1: They are more aggressive and more productive. Yeah they were.
- 16:06Speaker 1: They were better defensively, And he really rubbed me the wrong.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I like the guy personal. I've spoken to him off
- 16:12Speaker 1: the field many times, and I have enjoyed conversations with him.
- 16:16Speaker 1: I don't pretend to know him. He's not a friend.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But when I've dealt with him individually, I've had nothing
- 16:21Speaker 1: but great things to say. I told you this when
- 16:24Speaker 1: he came. Yeah, but the whole stick in Detroit bothered me.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Sit up straight, you know whatever, you know, just respect
- 16:34Speaker 1: the process, Like, no, you have a process. You're the
- 16:38Speaker 1: head coach of the Detroit Lions and you run the
- 16:41Speaker 1: Detroit Lions. But I'm here representing my media outlet. You
- 16:46Speaker 1: don't get to tell me how to do my job.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I just didn't like that. I didn't like the Roger
- 16:51Speaker 1: Goodell clown shirt. I thought that was unbecoming of a
- 16:54Speaker 1: defensive coordinator. Want to be NFL head coach like you
- 16:59Speaker 1: could and say what you want behind closed doors about
- 17:02Speaker 1: stuff like that. And I understand how the Patriots felt
- 17:05Speaker 1: about Goodell at the time that rubbed me the wrong way.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I thought that was kind of classless. I didn't like it. Yeah,
- 17:12Speaker 1: so I understand why some people are triggered by him.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I have no problem with him, never have. Yeah, and
- 17:18Speaker 1: I and I and I say it as like, you know,
- 17:20Speaker 1: somebody when I was blogging, I just I always really
- 17:22Speaker 1: liked writing about defense, and I was with that group
- 17:25Speaker 1: of people that found his style kind of driving me nuts.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And I felt like it was the bend, don't break,
- 17:31Speaker 1: and we're not going to really be aggressive. We're only
- 17:34Speaker 1: going to rush three four guys. And I think to
- 17:36Speaker 1: some extent they still aren't overly overly aggressive. Maybe when
- 17:40Speaker 1: Flores was here that one year, it felt like he
- 17:42Speaker 1: kind of went overboard and really went after it, which
- 17:44Speaker 1: was cool to see. But I don't know. I'm still
- 17:47Speaker 1: trying to put my finger on exactly what it was
- 17:49Speaker 1: that that bugged me, because I think you're right like
- 17:51Speaker 1: and I and I say that as somebody who loved
- 17:53Speaker 1: the defense and you know, really was following them closely.
- 17:57Speaker 1: But he's up to up to his eyeballs right now.
- 17:59Speaker 1: I'm a patrician and just about all of it. Um,
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'm just reading, you know, some of the captions they're
- 18:04Speaker 1: putting up on COVID. An NBC sports bosson I know
- 18:07Speaker 1: they're talking about different things, Trent Brown. He had mentioned,
- 18:11Speaker 1: you know, had was able to be part of the
- 18:13Speaker 1: offseason program. The whole way I think they're taught. They
- 18:16Speaker 1: talked about Time Montgomery. I didn't get to see anything
- 18:19Speaker 1: specifically about you know, you know his i R whether
- 18:25Speaker 1: it's something long term or well short, short term, just
- 18:29Speaker 1: talking about getting the information to the players and whatnot.
- 18:31Speaker 1: So we'll see when Bill wraps it up, if we
- 18:34Speaker 1: can sort of get some nuggets from from the Bill
- 18:37Speaker 1: press conference. When asked if Time Montgomery has a chance
- 18:40Speaker 1: to return this season, he said, we'll see how it
- 18:41Speaker 1: goes if he's healthy. If he's healthy, we'll bring him back.
- 18:44Speaker 1: How that will all turn out, I'm not a doctor.
- 18:46Speaker 1: He said that with a big smile on his face. Okay,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I'm gonna go with it's a longer term thing. Then
- 18:50Speaker 1: we got nothing right if they thought it was going
- 18:52Speaker 1: to be like four or five weeks. Oh, you know, yeah,
- 18:54Speaker 1: we anticipate him coming back at some point. Yeah, would
- 18:57Speaker 1: you think if he doesn't know, Yeah, it's a long
- 19:00Speaker 1: term thing. So so now what do you think, I mean,
- 19:03Speaker 1: does this give JJ Taylor an opportunity? You got Pierce
- 19:06Speaker 1: Strong's already on the roster. Is he ready to step
- 19:09Speaker 1: into something? I mean, I don't. I don't think he
- 19:11Speaker 1: can go in with Harris and Stevenson kind of being
- 19:13Speaker 1: the only two guys that are going to carry the
- 19:15Speaker 1: ball going you know, starting this week and going forward,
- 19:18Speaker 1: sets up some questions. If you don't bring up JJ Taylor,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I think you would have to at least incorporate Pierre Strong,
- 19:26Speaker 1: right and on some level, because I agree with you
- 19:28Speaker 1: can't just have two guys. You can go through a
- 19:32Speaker 1: game with only two guys getting the ball. That can happen,
- 19:36Speaker 1: but that's not the same as going into a game
- 19:37Speaker 1: with only two options. Do you know what I mean?
- 19:40Speaker 1: But Pierre Strong was inactive last week. I would think
- 19:43Speaker 1: at the very least he'd have to be active this week.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I'd like to see him. I think JJ Taylor will
- 19:47Speaker 1: come up from the ball squad too, like I'd like
- 19:50Speaker 1: to see Strong get a chance. I'm seeing Bill wrap
- 19:53Speaker 1: up his pest conference others Aaron Higher and getting a
- 19:55Speaker 1: nice front and center there. Let's let's take a quick
- 19:59Speaker 1: jo over to the phones. Is. Of course, Patty has
- 20:02Speaker 1: been waiting here for a little while, so let's jump
- 20:04Speaker 1: right in here and get you, hey, Patty, what's going on?
- 20:09Speaker 1: What's going on? Guys, just the two of us talking, Pats,
- 20:13Speaker 1: two of you. We do well. I had had a
- 20:16Speaker 1: couple of questions for you guys today, but first duced
- 20:20Speaker 1: Um yesterday and towards being into the show, when you
- 20:22Speaker 1: guys were talking about Kendrick Bourne and he said, I
- 20:25Speaker 1: don't know, maybe maybe he wasn't sitting up straight in
- 20:27Speaker 1: the meeting. I got a good chuckle. I thought that
- 20:29Speaker 1: one fell flat in the room. Oh, I got it out.
- 20:32Speaker 1: I got it. I was laughing. I was laughing on
- 20:36Speaker 1: the road. So I, uh yeah, I got two questions
- 20:40Speaker 1: for you. The first question is it's I'll preface the
- 20:45Speaker 1: question with Um saying, let's just say that they the
- 20:48Speaker 1: roster stays as it is and regardless of one one
- 20:51Speaker 1: or last record and how their offense looks when this happens.
- 20:54Speaker 1: But when Taekwon Thornton comes back, when he's ready and
- 20:57Speaker 1: available to play, do you think they they're a little
- 21:01Speaker 1: apprehensive about playing them a little like give him limited
- 21:05Speaker 1: snaps or do you think they just throw them out
- 21:07Speaker 1: there to see what he can do. And the second
- 21:10Speaker 1: question is regarding since t J. Watt is not going
- 21:14Speaker 1: to be playing in the game on Sunday, how important
- 21:17Speaker 1: is it for Mac on every single play to identify
- 21:20Speaker 1: where Minca Fitzpatrick is because he's in my opinion, he's
- 21:26Speaker 1: one of the best safeties in the league. Like hand
- 21:28Speaker 1: down yep, Well yeah, I mean I don't think those
- 21:32Speaker 1: two things are all that related, like t J. Watt
- 21:34Speaker 1: and Minca Fitzpatrick. Yeah, I mean, he's gonna need to
- 21:37Speaker 1: be aware of Fitzpatrick and they're gonna be I think,
- 21:41Speaker 1: thanks more importantly for Mac Jones in regards to pass protection,
- 21:45Speaker 1: he's gonna need to be on it. They've struggled, They've
- 21:48Speaker 1: missed some assignments, whether that's Max fault or the aligneman's fault.
- 21:52Speaker 1: You know, he needs to be part of the solution,
- 21:54Speaker 1: right You can't have the runaway guys that they've had.
- 21:58Speaker 1: Um So, I think they catch an enormous break without
- 22:03Speaker 1: t J. Watt. And it'd be interesting to see if
- 22:05Speaker 1: Alex Highsmith can be, you know, a disruptive player like
- 22:08Speaker 1: he was last week. Now he's a young guy who's
- 22:11Speaker 1: coming into his own Tom Wins talked very highly about
- 22:14Speaker 1: him in the past. He had three sacks and nine
- 22:17Speaker 1: quarterback pressures against Cincinnati. I have to think that's at
- 22:20Speaker 1: least partly due to the fact that on the other
- 22:23Speaker 1: side was t J Watt. Yeah, and he didn't get
- 22:26Speaker 1: hurt until overtime. So yeah, I mean to piggyback on
- 22:30Speaker 1: what you're saying too, I mean, and he plays on
- 22:32Speaker 1: the right side, so does Cam Hayward. So for me,
- 22:34Speaker 1: I look at Cole Strange Trent Brown as kind of
- 22:37Speaker 1: being key. I mean, Cam Hayward, he's an old veteran, big,
- 22:41Speaker 1: tough everything. That probably gives Cole Strange some problems here
- 22:46Speaker 1: early in his rookie year with you know, not having
- 22:49Speaker 1: the most sand in his pants, right, no one, there
- 22:51Speaker 1: you go. I think that's a real challenge. Yeah, I
- 22:54Speaker 1: like sand in his pants. That's good for the lineman
- 22:56Speaker 1: you need. I think he doesn't need a little bit
- 22:58Speaker 1: more of that. As for Thor, I mean, I'm not
- 23:00Speaker 1: sure if if he was talking along the lines of
- 23:04Speaker 1: are they worried he's gonna get reinjured or oh, I
- 23:07Speaker 1: don't know, but I just think he man. How much
- 23:09Speaker 1: do you think he'd played provided that he's healthy. I
- 23:11Speaker 1: can well, I would. I would say, yes, get him
- 23:15Speaker 1: in with you, no fights today, no rising in my voice.
- 23:21Speaker 1: But I will say that it probably would depend on
- 23:26Speaker 1: what's happened over the next month. You know. Let's say, like,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I think they have a good chance to go to
- 23:32Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and sort of make everybody feel a lot better
- 23:34Speaker 1: about what's going on and come away with a win.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Now do you come back and respond with a nice
- 23:38Speaker 1: win at home against Baltimore two, not the team that's
- 23:40Speaker 1: not likely to light up the school board? And then
- 23:45Speaker 1: all of a sudden you're feeling better about yourself at
- 23:47Speaker 1: like two and one, you know, and then you get Thornton,
- 23:50Speaker 1: probably back on the practice field, maybe with a chance
- 23:53Speaker 1: to play in week five or six. You know, probably
- 23:58Speaker 1: can afford to like work him in slowly and see
- 24:00Speaker 1: where he fits. You have bad stuff go on in
- 24:03Speaker 1: Pittsburgh and a continuation of the offensive malaise, and all
- 24:06Speaker 1: of a sudden you're one in three or you know,
- 24:09Speaker 1: worse yet oh and four, when Thornton I'd say, you
- 24:14Speaker 1: know what, let's get them out there for fifty snaps
- 24:16Speaker 1: and let's just get this kid ready to go. Yeah,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I mean I think if things continue along this trajectory
- 24:20Speaker 1: of how they started. I don't expect that they will,
- 24:22Speaker 1: but generally, if they do, I'm all for getting Thornton
- 24:26Speaker 1: out there a SAP, Get Pierre Strong out there a SAP.
- 24:28Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta start. I mean then I'm going
- 24:30Speaker 1: into full your mode. Get the kids in there. If
- 24:33Speaker 1: you don't have anything with these veteran group, if they're
- 24:35Speaker 1: not able to produce, you got to find out asap
- 24:38Speaker 1: with these guys. Get them out there right. The best
- 24:40Speaker 1: development of the twenty twenty one season was Mac Jones
- 24:43Speaker 1: played all the games and got invaluable experience. If you know,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you were able to do that in make the playoffs,
- 24:50Speaker 1: So that was the best of both worlds. If you
- 24:52Speaker 1: are in a position where you're not in playoff contention,
- 24:56Speaker 1: you know, as you hit like the middle to end
- 24:58Speaker 1: of October, if it looks you're in trouble like you
- 25:02Speaker 1: need to find a way to make sure that Thornton
- 25:06Speaker 1: is playing. The two Jones boys are getting significant snaps
- 25:10Speaker 1: on defense. I have no problem with how they were used.
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm not get a feetwet a little bit like that
- 25:14Speaker 1: doesn't have to be They didn't need to be huge
- 25:16Speaker 1: parts of the defensive game plan on Sunday in their
- 25:19Speaker 1: first game. But I want to see them be involved,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you know, as we as we move along here and
- 25:26Speaker 1: if you fall out of it, I want them heavily involved.
- 25:30Speaker 1: All right, let's go here. I'm assuming this is Chris
- 25:34Speaker 1: with A T, I A and Hey Christian, what's going on?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Hey guys, what's happening? Um? I just had a quick
- 25:41Speaker 1: question about I R and so is it still? Um?
- 25:46Speaker 1: You have two spots open for short short term eis
- 25:50Speaker 1: during the season? No? You have? Yeah, you have? What
- 25:54Speaker 1: is it now? What's the number? Is it? I thought
- 25:57Speaker 1: it was unlimited, wasn't it? I think it still? Did
- 25:59Speaker 1: they cap that again? I think it's like but I
- 26:01Speaker 1: think it's a high. Now I think it's eight or
- 26:03Speaker 1: something like that. But um, no, they have more than two.
- 26:06Speaker 1: So yes, if if time Montgomery physically can come back,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I think that he would be he would be able
- 26:12Speaker 1: to do so. Yes, So was it eight? Okay that's
- 26:18Speaker 1: what I thought? So say like the UM and I
- 26:23Speaker 1: remember with UM with like just like tough for example,
- 26:26Speaker 1: it would be the first six weeks and then you
- 26:28Speaker 1: had three weeks to activate him. How does it work
- 26:30Speaker 1: listen with the fourth term, ir like in weeks four, Like,
- 26:33Speaker 1: do you have to decide right then and there or
- 26:36Speaker 1: do you have like a couple of weeks to activate them.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I'm kind of pleasing. No, he's eligible to return after
- 26:42Speaker 1: four games, but you don't have to have him returned. Wow, Okay, Yeah,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I think it's once he starts practicing, then you have
- 26:51Speaker 1: a week to activate him. The clock starts right, starts
- 26:55Speaker 1: for for I R I again, some of these things,
- 26:58Speaker 1: like Mike just said that sort of changed with COVID
- 27:02Speaker 1: back and forth. So yeah, I think it's Thanks Christian,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I think he can come. I think like Tae Kwon Thornton,
- 27:08Speaker 1: for example, I think would be able to start practicing,
- 27:11Speaker 1: he'd be eligible to start practicing heading into the Week
- 27:14Speaker 1: four game. Then he would have to sit out that
- 27:17Speaker 1: Week four game, and then the following week they would
- 27:21Speaker 1: have to make a decision if he if he did now,
- 27:23Speaker 1: if it's like week five, when I think you have
- 27:26Speaker 1: a week of practice before he would have to be
- 27:29Speaker 1: activated to the roster or not. I think. I love
- 27:32Speaker 1: this stuff though that came out of COVID with the
- 27:34Speaker 1: ability to have practice squad veterans, and I just it's
- 27:37Speaker 1: it's I think it's so much better the game. I mean,
- 27:39Speaker 1: I just love to being able to grab a Marcus
- 27:41Speaker 1: Cannon type. You know, I know, you know we talked
- 27:43Speaker 1: about him. But yeah, it's nothing to do with with
- 27:46Speaker 1: Marcus Can. I love the I R stuff. I'm totally
- 27:48Speaker 1: with you on that. I like the roster flexibility. I
- 27:51Speaker 1: don't think you need sixteen guys in the practice squad,
- 27:54Speaker 1: and I don't think you need you know, eight year
- 27:55Speaker 1: veterans on the practice squad. I think it should be
- 27:58Speaker 1: a smaller practice squad and you should have young players,
- 28:01Speaker 1: young developmental players on it. But it's not doesn't like
- 28:05Speaker 1: bug me or anything like that. More jobs for guys.
- 28:08Speaker 1: They chose to do it this way, and that's that.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I mean that, that's fine. Sixteen guys and you have
- 28:12Speaker 1: how many? Was there? Like four? Four veterans? Thanks? Four
- 28:15Speaker 1: or six? Yeah? Six veterans. All right, let's go down
- 28:18Speaker 1: to William, North Carolina. Hit William, what's going on? Hey, guys,
- 28:21Speaker 1: thanks taking my calls, my once a decade call, and
- 28:24Speaker 1: I'm a bit nervous. I appreciate you taking it. No
- 28:27Speaker 1: need to be nervous, MIAs, Mike won't yell, it's just
- 28:29Speaker 1: the two of us, but he got the sports details
- 28:32Speaker 1: of the moment. I just wanted to say it struck
- 28:34Speaker 1: a chord yesterday when Alex and occasionally Paul says about
- 28:38Speaker 1: a difference they're making and you know, your career path
- 28:41Speaker 1: and choice, and I just I know you make a
- 28:43Speaker 1: hue and a lot of lives in my life, you know,
- 28:45Speaker 1: and my girls are born. And I was up in
- 28:48Speaker 1: and I can care of him. I listened to y'all.
- 28:50Speaker 1: You know, my dad and I visited there in the studio,
- 28:52Speaker 1: you know, when he was dying. I held his hand
- 28:55Speaker 1: and listened to y'all. And he don't make any difference
- 28:59Speaker 1: in a lot of lives. And I just would hope
- 29:00Speaker 1: that she is a young person, would not doubt the
- 29:04Speaker 1: past that she's considering going down the other size, will
- 29:07Speaker 1: pass that, pass it along to her for sure. Absolutely absolutely.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I'm glad that we um you know, we're here. I'm
- 29:13Speaker 1: glad that we are here every week as we try
- 29:16Speaker 1: to try to have some fun. We try not to
- 29:18Speaker 1: make it too sa I know, just sports, right, people
- 29:20Speaker 1: people think, you know, like that I'm always arguing with somebody,
- 29:24Speaker 1: but it's not really meant to be like in Mike
- 29:26Speaker 1: will tell you there's never been a real argument. It's
- 29:29Speaker 1: always sports arguments. That's not the same thing. We always
- 29:32Speaker 1: sort of, you know, have some fun and go back
- 29:35Speaker 1: and forth and then we make fun of each other
- 29:37Speaker 1: as soon as the show's all because we all do,
- 29:39Speaker 1: in general, get along very well generally, and that's why
- 29:42Speaker 1: the off season shows are the best. But yes, yes, thanks,
- 29:46Speaker 1: well you appreciate it. Yeah, it's funny. I feel like
- 29:49Speaker 1: I've evolved. I've evolved on this point. Um, you know,
- 29:52Speaker 1: like like now when we kind of I don't know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: we don't, we don't, we don't, we don't chirp too
- 29:55Speaker 1: much at each other. Um, but now I just like,
- 29:58Speaker 1: I don't, I don't know. Like before I would get
- 30:00Speaker 1: like a rush of blood and like where we go?
- 30:02Speaker 1: You know. Now I just kind of all right, say
- 30:05Speaker 1: my thing. Now you say you're guy, and you can
- 30:07Speaker 1: tell too when it's one of those that I'm just
- 30:10Speaker 1: sort of you know, all of a sudden, there's a
- 30:14Speaker 1: real one. And that's one that's when the push it away. Okay,
- 30:19Speaker 1: all right, listen, that's when Fred looks at me and
- 30:22Speaker 1: does the little eyebrow thing. Yeah, he got him, I
- 30:25Speaker 1: got him. Why I try not to do that too, up,
- 30:29Speaker 1: I don't want to give him what he wants. He's
- 30:30Speaker 1: very very calculating with with those things. Uh so yeah,
- 30:34Speaker 1: just update you guys too, you know, practice going to
- 30:36Speaker 1: go on and about ten minutes and we'll expect Evan
- 30:38Speaker 1: in after that give us a full report and then
- 30:40Speaker 1: we'll we'll pick his brain about his uh his film review.
- 30:44Speaker 1: A couple emails coming in. Phone lines are open though,
- 30:46Speaker 1: if you guys want to give us a call eight
- 30:47Speaker 1: five to five pats five hundred. UM. I thought this
- 30:50Speaker 1: one was interesting. Cody Moran right and in Um, Cody
- 30:54Speaker 1: from Cincinnati. I should say, hey, guys, doesn't even feel
- 30:56Speaker 1: like Daniel Jones is very dangerously utilized in New York.
- 30:59Speaker 1: They're constant is he runs for him and plays in
- 31:01Speaker 1: Harm's Way, where he's taking a lot of hits. If
- 31:04Speaker 1: Mac were placed in the same position, we would be furious.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Why do you wow? Why did they do this to
- 31:08Speaker 1: Daniel Jones if they thought he was their future? I
- 31:10Speaker 1: just thought Daniel Jones was an interesting guy this week
- 31:12Speaker 1: with um, you know, playing for Brian Dable and and
- 31:15Speaker 1: it seemed like everybody like statistically was all in love
- 31:17Speaker 1: with Daniel Jones, but it didn't really seem like he
- 31:20Speaker 1: played all that hot. But in the in the game itself, yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 1: from what he was, he was up and down. I
- 31:25Speaker 1: think he did a great job of rallying the team
- 31:27Speaker 1: in the second half and overcoming a horrific interception that
- 31:31Speaker 1: he threw and leading a game winning drive. He made
- 31:33Speaker 1: some good plays. Now, the biggest play was sa Quon
- 31:36Speaker 1: Barkley got free for a long run, which got him
- 31:40Speaker 1: look good fat he was. He was excellent in the game.
- 31:42Speaker 1: That's their offense. I mean we saw them, I mean
- 31:44Speaker 1: we saw them last summer, and their best plays were
- 31:46Speaker 1: I mean, at that point, sa Quon I think was
- 31:48Speaker 1: not healthy. He's still working his way back if he
- 31:50Speaker 1: was out there. But um, Pataniel Jones, that was like
- 31:53Speaker 1: the best play they had, which is quarterback keepers and
- 31:56Speaker 1: that was the Joe Judge down there. All right, let's
- 31:58Speaker 1: move on, m Patricia and judge. This is this is
- 32:01Speaker 1: stuffing from near Frankfurt, Germany. A patrician judge as old
- 32:04Speaker 1: line and QB coach don't only have to create and
- 32:06Speaker 1: install the game plan and call plays, they're affectively are
- 32:09Speaker 1: teachers teaching concepts and techniques. Maybe old line playing QB
- 32:12Speaker 1: performance are lacking because Patrician and Judge theoretically know how
- 32:15Speaker 1: to coach these skill positions, but aren't practically able to
- 32:18Speaker 1: correct flaws or coats every bit a performance out of
- 32:21Speaker 1: the players that they have. I'd like to know your
- 32:24Speaker 1: take on that theory, anything on that. It's just it's hard.
- 32:29Speaker 1: There's so much. They have, so much. I don't know
- 32:31Speaker 1: how to like parse it all out and say this
- 32:34Speaker 1: is you know what they're good at, this is what
- 32:37Speaker 1: It's just, it's it's all. It's just all you can
- 32:39Speaker 1: look at is the performance on the field. I feel
- 32:40Speaker 1: like and say the proof is in the pudding, and
- 32:43Speaker 1: I can't. I can't tell you what's responsible in all
- 32:45Speaker 1: the individual details. Yeah, and I think that they've had issues.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I mean, there's no question. And I just wonder how
- 32:54Speaker 1: much of the issues are beyond football, Like, I just
- 32:57Speaker 1: wonder how much of it is mental in terms of
- 33:00Speaker 1: what they're doing. You know, either guys don't really understand
- 33:03Speaker 1: what they're doing well enough, or they don't believe in
- 33:07Speaker 1: what they're doing. And that's like those are easy, cliche
- 33:10Speaker 1: talk radio things to say. And I'll be fully admitting
- 33:14Speaker 1: that there's no like, you can't tell me I'm wrong,
- 33:17Speaker 1: you can't tell me I'm right. Like it's it's sort
- 33:20Speaker 1: of an abstract concept, like unless someone tells you, you
- 33:24Speaker 1: know what, Mike, we don't really know with the offensive linemen,
- 33:28Speaker 1: we don't really know what we're doing. That's not going
- 33:29Speaker 1: to happen. So it's just it's kind of a feeling
- 33:32Speaker 1: that you get from watching I wonder if it's a
- 33:35Speaker 1: combination of them not necessarily all being on the same
- 33:37Speaker 1: page with what they're actually doing, and then not really
- 33:41Speaker 1: understanding why they're doing it in the first place. Yeah,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I don't know that that's true, but I'm just wondering
- 33:46Speaker 1: if that's a problem, because if it is, it's way
- 33:48Speaker 1: worse than anything physical. I know, I know, and I'm
- 33:51Speaker 1: not wanted to walk down that road. Lightly, Like I
- 33:54Speaker 1: hold out hope or belief that you know that they've
- 33:58Speaker 1: got guys here that are tough competitors, and you know
- 34:02Speaker 1: that they're all gonna pull together for the same goal.
- 34:05Speaker 1: But I mean, I gotta be honest, the way that
- 34:07Speaker 1: they played and the way that they've kind of looked
- 34:09Speaker 1: over the past few months, I just I don't know,
- 34:12Speaker 1: I don't know what the what the I don't want
- 34:14Speaker 1: to say the investment level. That's maybe putting it a
- 34:17Speaker 1: little bit too extreme. But I just have concerns and
- 34:21Speaker 1: I think a lot of it is on the offensive
- 34:23Speaker 1: line and specifically on the edge of the offensive line.
- 34:25Speaker 1: But so far, the you know what we've seen, I mean,
- 34:30Speaker 1: I mean maybe even the Carolina Panthers practice when there
- 34:34Speaker 1: was like the fight, like that was one of the
- 34:35Speaker 1: only moments I really felt like so far where it
- 34:38Speaker 1: felt like they were a fired up group ready to
- 34:40Speaker 1: kind of compete, you know, But I don't and I'll
- 34:43Speaker 1: I agree with you totally. I think you're right about that, um,
- 34:47Speaker 1: but even that, I'm going to use this like, Okay,
- 34:50Speaker 1: So it happened on Tuesday and there was a lot
- 34:53Speaker 1: of pushing in shoving and fighting, and then you know,
- 34:55Speaker 1: the coaches were like, all right, you got that out
- 34:58Speaker 1: of your systems, and then haven't happened the same way
- 35:01Speaker 1: again on Wednesday. It's like like an indication like are
- 35:06Speaker 1: they really listening or are they just doing what they're doing?
- 35:09Speaker 1: You know? And again, I know, the guy had the
- 35:11Speaker 1: big hit on Wilkerson and they responded to it. I
- 35:14Speaker 1: don't have any problem with that. I was an uncompletely
- 35:17Speaker 1: cheap and unnecessary hit right on a practice field, and
- 35:22Speaker 1: they responded to it. So on the surface, I don't
- 35:24Speaker 1: think the players did anything wrong. But I'm just wondering
- 35:26Speaker 1: if maybe there was another indication of yeah, I know
- 35:29Speaker 1: what you said, coach, but we're gonna do this anyway. Yeah. Yeah,
- 35:32Speaker 1: Well that's kind of a long lines from Todd and
- 35:33Speaker 1: Greenfields just saying good day, gents. Is there a chance
- 35:36Speaker 1: that Bill has lost his ability to relate to the players,
- 35:39Speaker 1: staff feels disconnected from the zeitgeist to the league. Bill
- 35:42Speaker 1: Patrician and the rest of the coaches do not interview well,
- 35:45Speaker 1: just the thought zeitgeist league. I love that that phrase
- 35:52Speaker 1: would be right up Fred's allie to share that one
- 35:54Speaker 1: with him. I don't know if Bill. I mean, I've
- 35:58Speaker 1: always sort of felt like Bill has a communication issue,
- 36:01Speaker 1: Like he's not, you know, the warmest and fuzziest guy,
- 36:06Speaker 1: but he's always sort of been able to get his
- 36:08Speaker 1: message across. I think his reputation as the ultimate successful coach,
- 36:14Speaker 1: the ultimate winner in the NFL helps that. And you
- 36:18Speaker 1: do wonder if maybe now you're bringing in guys that
- 36:23Speaker 1: weren't around for part of your success, And I wonder
- 36:26Speaker 1: if it's not as much buying because of it. You know,
- 36:28Speaker 1: you have Devin mccordy, you have Matthew Slater. Who else
- 36:32Speaker 1: is on the roster that won Super Bowl with the Patriots?
- 36:34Speaker 1: Trent Brown was here in eighteen, he won a Super Bowl. Yeah,
- 36:39Speaker 1: it's probably not too many others right now. And I mean,
- 36:42Speaker 1: and part of that too, as you wonder, you know,
- 36:45Speaker 1: how much competitive fire do those guys have left too?
- 36:48Speaker 1: Like how much does Devin mccordy enjoying this right now?
- 36:51Speaker 1: I mean, I'm sure he likes playing football, clearly, but
- 36:55Speaker 1: it's a different team now. So even when the new
- 36:56Speaker 1: guys don't really know and the old guys, it's not
- 36:59Speaker 1: the same as it was. You know, that feeling hard,
- 37:02Speaker 1: hard to escape it, and it's like how old were
- 37:04Speaker 1: you kids when you know, just do it because I
- 37:06Speaker 1: said so, stop working? Yeah, right right? And that's and
- 37:10Speaker 1: that's why I think this weekend it's there's got to
- 37:13Speaker 1: be some success. They got to start to string something
- 37:15Speaker 1: together because it's you know, you can tell us through
- 37:17Speaker 1: the preseason, oh you know, we're figuring it out even
- 37:20Speaker 1: into meet week one, you know, all right, well, you
- 37:22Speaker 1: know it's the kind of an extension of the preseason.
- 37:24Speaker 1: But like at some point, we're just getting game after
- 37:28Speaker 1: game after game, we're seeing the same thing going back
- 37:29Speaker 1: to last year, and I go back to that quote
- 37:31Speaker 1: from Bill after the Bill's loss. Was this a bad
- 37:35Speaker 1: night or is this who we are? We'll find out
- 37:38Speaker 1: next year? Well through one game and the entire looks
- 37:41Speaker 1: so you're still entire offseason slash summer, you know, like
- 37:44Speaker 1: this is what they look like. Let's go back over
- 37:49Speaker 1: here another one. Uh yeah. Keenan writing in I'm so
- 37:53Speaker 1: worried about Mac. So many people believe the Patriots have
- 37:56Speaker 1: their guy in Mac Jones, but I would say since
- 37:58Speaker 1: the first Buffalo game last year in the Wind, he
- 38:00Speaker 1: has done more to convince me that he is not
- 38:02Speaker 1: the guy in the future. Although the first game against
- 38:05Speaker 1: Buffalo resulted in a winn, it really bothered me that
- 38:07Speaker 1: he wasn't trusted to throw the ball three times. And
- 38:09Speaker 1: since that game, he hasn't done anything to convince me
- 38:12Speaker 1: that he is nothing more than a quarterback cable of
- 38:14Speaker 1: beating up on some bad teams. I still have hope
- 38:16Speaker 1: for him, but I'm starting to lean towards him not
- 38:19Speaker 1: being the answer at QB. If Matt Jones has another
- 38:22Speaker 1: year where he beats up on bad teams but struggles
- 38:24Speaker 1: against good teams or even teams on the same level
- 38:26Speaker 1: as the Patriots, would you consider using a high round
- 38:29Speaker 1: draft pick on the QB next year? Should we save
- 38:31Speaker 1: this one? Yeah, we're gonna table that one for I'm
- 38:34Speaker 1: gonna say early November. But I did throw that out
- 38:38Speaker 1: there today as a complete and total hypothetical to our boys,
- 38:42Speaker 1: our group. Just if they don't have a good season
- 38:45Speaker 1: and you know you're out of the playoff hunt in
- 38:47Speaker 1: November and you're sort of in line for a say
- 38:50Speaker 1: a top five, top ten draft pick, would you use
- 38:54Speaker 1: that first round pick on a quarterback? And I don't
- 38:58Speaker 1: think it's an easy answer. Now, you definitely need the
- 39:01Speaker 1: whole this whole season of view, and you need to
- 39:03Speaker 1: marinate over the whole year, and even then with the
- 39:06Speaker 1: amount of needs that they have, I mean, you're you're
- 39:08Speaker 1: one hundred percent right about the quarterback. You got to
- 39:10Speaker 1: get the quarterback, and when you get a chance to
- 39:12Speaker 1: pick one up there, you got to get one. But
- 39:14Speaker 1: there are a lot of needs too, So you know,
- 39:16Speaker 1: I mean, if someone looking for that pick and you
- 39:19Speaker 1: can fill four or five needs with it, as opposed
- 39:22Speaker 1: to taken one guy too that there's a lot of
- 39:25Speaker 1: different things that play, But in terms of MAC, I
- 39:29Speaker 1: kind of feel like I'm in the middle, and I
- 39:31Speaker 1: feel like I've been in the middle on MAC from
- 39:33Speaker 1: the start. You know, based on what I've seen, I
- 39:35Speaker 1: think he can play. I've never ever said he stinks.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I've never said that he's not the answer. I've also
- 39:42Speaker 1: never said I'm completely convinced that he's the franchise guy
- 39:45Speaker 1: moving forward. I feel like I'm in the middle, very
- 39:48Speaker 1: wishy washy, very abnormal place for me to be played
- 39:50Speaker 1: one year. I mean it's not, but it's a very
- 39:52Speaker 1: strange place for me to be in. But the guy's right,
- 39:54Speaker 1: the email is right. I think if you ask the
- 39:57Speaker 1: vast majority of Patriots fans and the vast callers to
- 40:00Speaker 1: talk radio, they'll tell you that the quarterback is not
- 40:03Speaker 1: the problem. He's the guy, and he's being set up
- 40:05Speaker 1: to fail by the offensive structure. I am not convinced
- 40:11Speaker 1: that that's the case. I'm not convinced that he's a bum,
- 40:14Speaker 1: but I'm not convinced that this is all because of
- 40:18Speaker 1: Matt Patricia and Joe Judge. I think he needs to
- 40:21Speaker 1: play better. I think he looks to me like a
- 40:24Speaker 1: guy who can be fine when all the pieces are
- 40:28Speaker 1: in place, when he's getting protected, when guys are popping open,
- 40:32Speaker 1: and he has a full compliment of guys that maybe,
- 40:34Speaker 1: you know, against a defense that's not talented enough, then
- 40:38Speaker 1: I think he's fine. He's showed he showed me the
- 40:40Speaker 1: ability that he can do that. But he has yet
- 40:43Speaker 1: to show me the ability that when a play is
- 40:44Speaker 1: breaking down and they're down two scores in the middle
- 40:48Speaker 1: of the fourth quarter, that he can do enough to
- 40:50Speaker 1: rise the team above all the bad stuff that's going
- 40:53Speaker 1: on and overcome it. Yeah, I mean, you know, I
- 40:55Speaker 1: don't I don't want to undercut anything Evan did, but
- 40:57Speaker 1: but I didn't watch some of the All twenty two
- 40:58Speaker 1: myself last night. It's just frustrating for me. Paul, I'm
- 41:02Speaker 1: out number. It's just that when he's he's not taken
- 41:06Speaker 1: the gimmes, you know, or or it seems to me
- 41:09Speaker 1: like there are guys open downfield. There are windows downfield
- 41:13Speaker 1: at times, and I'm not going to tell you that that.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Look at all the guys that were open but I
- 41:17Speaker 1: think that there were windows to throw where he passed
- 41:21Speaker 1: them up sometime I'm not even looking at him choosing
- 41:23Speaker 1: to take the check downs, you know, choosing to take
- 41:25Speaker 1: the shots. The protection was bad on a couple plays,
- 41:29Speaker 1: for sure, yep, but generally and I think that, but
- 41:33Speaker 1: I think that's part of the problem. I saw it
- 41:36Speaker 1: happening to Drew and I saw it happened early in
- 41:39Speaker 1: Tom's career. Now Tom overcame it, and then very late
- 41:43Speaker 1: in his career you saw it come back again. Like
- 41:47Speaker 1: the very end of the Tom Brady era here in
- 41:49Speaker 1: New England involved him dropping to the ground on a
- 41:52Speaker 1: lot of sacks. But like, I'm pulling the plug and
- 41:56Speaker 1: I've seen that. I saw it Sunday night in Dallas
- 42:00Speaker 1: in some of those red zone where Michael Parsons was
- 42:02Speaker 1: coming and he just was getting down because I think
- 42:05Speaker 1: he lives to fight another day. Now it's a little
- 42:07Speaker 1: different when the game is on the line. Yeah, But
- 42:09Speaker 1: that was the other thing we were talking about some
- 42:11Speaker 1: of these some of the armchair quarterbacks on Twitter, like
- 42:15Speaker 1: this guy's opened, that guy's open, and I'm like, well, okay,
- 42:19Speaker 1: well you had a lot of praise for the quarterback
- 42:21Speaker 1: in one of your h you know, commentaries, and then
- 42:24Speaker 1: the next commentary you're showing me all these open guys.
- 42:26Speaker 1: So you tell me Mac had a bad game, because
- 42:29Speaker 1: I don't think anybody really said that, not too many anyway.
- 42:34Speaker 1: So again, I just think people just worked themselves into
- 42:37Speaker 1: pretzels to make everything all Matt Patricia, Joe Judge set
- 42:43Speaker 1: up to fail. No, there's no nuance to it, there's
- 42:46Speaker 1: nothing else to it. Yeah, they don't run enough creativity,
- 42:49Speaker 1: they don't do enough play action. They're not doing enough
- 42:51Speaker 1: to help Mac Jones. They're not protecting him. Yeah, I
- 42:55Speaker 1: think some of the big too. He needs to get comfortable.
- 42:57Speaker 1: He needs to get on the same page, I think.
- 42:59Speaker 1: And that's like and and I'm you know, very excited
- 43:02Speaker 1: to get Evans, you know, thoughts overall, just on the
- 43:04Speaker 1: offensive design. But I mean I came away rewatching it
- 43:07Speaker 1: yesterday just being like, he's leaving plays on the field
- 43:10Speaker 1: on the field, you know, And I don't think that
- 43:12Speaker 1: it should be flawless. He shouldn't be, you know, carving
- 43:14Speaker 1: these guys up. But I just didn't see the confidence
- 43:17Speaker 1: that you know, he kind of saw last year where
- 43:19Speaker 1: it felt like he knew he could get the ball downfield,
- 43:22Speaker 1: and you know that the guys were going to be
- 43:23Speaker 1: there for whatever reason, and maybe, you know, maybe getting
- 43:26Speaker 1: Kendrick Borne more involved, he was a little bit more
- 43:27Speaker 1: comfortable throwing to him at this point. Um, But I
- 43:31Speaker 1: you know, I don't disagree. I think you know, Mac
- 43:33Speaker 1: needs to he needs a good game. He needs to
- 43:35Speaker 1: go out and really put together a strong performance, because
- 43:38Speaker 1: I think what that emailer expressed was what a lot
- 43:40Speaker 1: of us are thinking. It's just every week, it's kind
- 43:43Speaker 1: of feeling like the same, especially when you go for
- 43:44Speaker 1: a whole offseason and you're expecting something new, something different,
- 43:48Speaker 1: and you know it's it's it's not at all what
- 43:51Speaker 1: you're hoping for. Uh Yeah, David writing in David Bethlehem,
- 43:56Speaker 1: fed of five surgeries. He doesn't know an X ray
- 44:00Speaker 1: can help diagnose gross fractures dislocations, so they don't provide diagnosis.
- 44:04Speaker 1: A soft tissue needs an MRI cat skin. Mac likely
- 44:07Speaker 1: had an MRI. If he plays, likely it's a muscle strain.
- 44:11Speaker 1: So yeah, I mean he had I mean, I'm sure
- 44:13Speaker 1: he had an MRI. When he got back they were
- 44:15Speaker 1: doing the Bill said further testing. When he gets back
- 44:18Speaker 1: to Foxborough or someone maybe Bill didn't say that after
- 44:21Speaker 1: the game, but someone after the game said he'll have
- 44:23Speaker 1: further evaluation in Foxborough. I'm sure that involves scans, right, Yeah, yeah,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I mean, I yeah, he didn't have a broken you know,
- 44:32Speaker 1: you know, a pile dry. It was like, yeah, he
- 44:34Speaker 1: didn't have a broken bone or you know, I just
- 44:38Speaker 1: wonder if it's more than just spasms. That's all right, Well,
- 44:41Speaker 1: and it's always hard because well he's going into the
- 44:43Speaker 1: X ray room, so you know, but also might be
- 44:45Speaker 1: where they're just going to. And everybody was telling us
- 44:47Speaker 1: how bad he looked when he was walking. If you recall,
- 44:50Speaker 1: it was a very stiff, very very stiff. This guy.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Look at this guy. Yeah, ready to go. I'm trying
- 44:57Speaker 1: to think of a segue that that Fred might do.

- 55:23Speaker 1: Give the Oscar to the makeup artist, you know what

- 55:29Speaker 1: the character. I didn't realize it was her. Yeah, what's
- 55:33Speaker 1: uh what Philip? He was a good one where yeah,
- 55:38Speaker 1: he's the same guy, but it just rolled brought something
- 55:41Speaker 1: kind of different to it that just it never took
- 55:44Speaker 1: me out of it. But he was never Oscar worthy
- 55:46Speaker 1: because I always knew it was Philip. I know, we know,

- 56:07Speaker 1: know what you're talking about. Did you recognize de Niro? Oh? Absolutely,

- 56:14Speaker 1: She's now, but it's de Niro. It was just a part,

- 56:29Speaker 1: People can't see you, Fred, you're doing uh prominent SnO,
- 56:35Speaker 1: but that's another great moment from I think the Lady
- 56:43Speaker 1: Gaga's a little bit of a unique example, Paul, because
- 56:46Speaker 1: she's always dressed in crazy outfits. You know, I don't
- 56:48Speaker 1: even know if I could really recognize her like on
- 56:50Speaker 1: the street, like Lady Gaga. So when you put her
- 56:53Speaker 1: up in a movie, I kind of get why. Fred,
- 56:54Speaker 1: maybe he doesn't didn't get Lady Gaga. No, but I
- 56:57Speaker 1: just didn't understand. There's a lot of people that are
- 56:59Speaker 1: in movies and you're like, wow, you don't even recognize
- 57:01Speaker 1: that they don't look like themselves. I didn't get his
- 57:04Speaker 1: fixation with that mentor was a great performance, Yeah, yeah, yeah,

- 57:12Speaker 1: I almost called it PFW progress history used to be Well,
- 57:15Speaker 1: the man is here, Evan Lazarre. But I think maybe
- 57:17Speaker 1: should we play the mic has returned from practice, just
- 57:19Speaker 1: for old time's sake perhaps, and uh, you know, just
- 57:22Speaker 1: to set the stage. Evan. All right, So Evan, yeah,
- 57:38Speaker 1: there's a whole theme song. Talented listeners. Uh, thank you
- 57:42Speaker 1: for God. What were their news out here? To put
- 57:44Speaker 1: them to get him? Blanking um Blue new Hampshire, Yeah,
- 57:47Speaker 1: Jill new Hampshire. That's right. So Evan, you're back, you're
- 57:50Speaker 1: out of practice, you've been watching the film. We've missed you.
- 57:53Speaker 1: We're excited to get some of your analysis here. Um.
- 57:56Speaker 1: But let's let's start with the first things. First practice,
- 57:58Speaker 1: what's going on out there? Mac Jones at Patriots practice today.
- 58:02Speaker 1: I don't think that's really surprising that we got to
- 58:05Speaker 1: see him very short window here today. I think we
- 58:07Speaker 1: were out there for maybe ten total minutes if that,
- 58:10Speaker 1: so we didn't see him move around much, and they
- 58:13Speaker 1: cut us off right as after stretching, so not a
- 58:16Speaker 1: whole lot to glean about how he was moving or
- 58:18Speaker 1: how he looked out there. But Mac Jones is out there.
- 58:20Speaker 1: They actually had perfect attendance on the fifty three man roster,
- 58:23Speaker 1: which means Adrian Phillips was also out there who got
- 58:26Speaker 1: injured during in the Miami game as well, So good
- 58:29Speaker 1: attendance for the Patriots. Again. Didn't get to actually see
- 58:32Speaker 1: them do much today, so maybe tomorrow we'll get to
- 58:34Speaker 1: see Mac move around a little bit more. All right, So,
- 58:36Speaker 1: I mean, we got an hour left, and I want
- 58:38Speaker 1: to go through this like piece by piece because I
- 58:40Speaker 1: know that you're probably like a damn just ready to
- 58:43Speaker 1: burst and just like unleash, like ten straight minutes of analysis.
- 58:48Speaker 1: Not as here, but you know, there's so much to
- 58:51Speaker 1: digest from the first game, and we haven't talked to
- 58:53Speaker 1: you here in a couple of weeks. So thanks COVID,
- 58:57Speaker 1: let's say, can we allowed to let that out? Yeah,
- 58:59Speaker 1: Evan on the reserve COVID nineteen list, you're allowed. We
- 59:03Speaker 1: just didn't because fair enough got a little little bit
- 59:08Speaker 1: of this, a little bit of the cold, some secrets,
- 59:10Speaker 1: but not that he's fine. You've been reading all his writing,
- 59:12Speaker 1: he's been he's been still knee deep in it as always,
- 59:14Speaker 1: but um, you know, just generally, let's just just start
- 59:18Speaker 1: at the very very top and generally, you know, watching
- 59:21Speaker 1: the game again and then all too twenty two and
- 59:23Speaker 1: breaking it down, you know what, what did you kind
- 59:25Speaker 1: of come away just because I know you watch it
- 59:28Speaker 1: for your opinion and you're not you know, trying to
- 59:29Speaker 1: follow storylines. You just you know, come away with what
- 59:32Speaker 1: you think. So, you know what, we're just kind of
- 59:34Speaker 1: a couple of the headlines that you came away from. Well,
- 59:37Speaker 1: I want to start on a positive note because I
- 59:39Speaker 1: think that's that's the way. It's the stage that we
- 59:42Speaker 1: that we wanted to, you know, set the stage. Yeah,
- 59:45Speaker 1: I thought this was looking back on it and watching
- 59:47Speaker 1: the game back, A good game for the Patriots defensive front.
- 59:51Speaker 1: They played the run pretty well, they got after to
- 59:53Speaker 1: Uh He's a quarterback that, as you see, especially as
- 59:57Speaker 1: the game wears on, pressure really affects it him and
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: his accuracy down the field. And I actually thought I
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: wanted to watch this game. And I go in with
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: no priors or nothing, but I really did want to
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: watch this particular game and say, wow, what a great
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: performance by the Patriots secondary. This secondary minus Jacy Jackson,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: minus Stefan Gilmour, if you want to include him, went
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: out there and stopped a really talented group of skill
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: players for Miami. I didn't come away with that takeaway.
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: I came away with the fact that a lot of
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: the downfield opportunities that Miami might have had in the
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: game were taken away by the pressure upfront. So still positive,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: right that the pressure was the one that impacted the
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: game a little bit more. Dietrich wise had a great
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: game led the team before QB pressures. Matthew Judon was
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: in the backfield quite a bit as well, so I
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: thought that was a positive. I think then one thing
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: and we're probably just secked the offense and talk about
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: it for the next fifty six minutes or whatever it is.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: But I think the one thing that I came away
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: with offensively more so, I don't like to harp too
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: much on personnel and all. They don't have the talent,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: they don't have the skill whatever, because they're not going
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: to go out and make some big trade and trade
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: for Justin Jefferson tomorrow and have this great wide receiver.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: So the personnel is what it is. I think the
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: biggest thing that I came away from that game was
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: the stagnation of the offense where there's nothing happening pre snap,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: there's nothing happening post snap in terms of fakes, play action, RPO,
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: anything like that, and you're playing straight up football. So
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: you are either under center turning around and handing the
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: ball off to Damien Harris or mondre Stevenson or tossing
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: it out to them, or you're in shotgun spread. Let's
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: spread the field and go by. Looking at the other
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: side of the tape. When you get into Miami, you
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: see motion. You see seventeen play action dropbacks for Tua.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: You see Tyree Hill coming across the formation and out
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: the other side, you see a little dancing in the
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: backfield and jet sweeps, end a rounds, things like that.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: And the Patriots just did none of that. And I
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: just don't know if you're going to be a successful
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: offense without having dominant skill players. Like a team that
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: was like that was the early two thousands Indianapolis Colts
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: with Payton. They would play eleven personnel. They'd line up
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: and they'd say, we're just better than you. We have
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison over here, we have Reggie Wayne over there,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: we have Peyton at quarterback. We're just better than you.
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: The Patriots don't have the kind of talent to just
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: be better like that. They have to dress it up
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: a little bit more. So, I mean, do you feel
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: like this, I don't want to say the word remedial offense,
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: but it just seems like I also don't want to
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: say that they just pulled it from Madden, but I
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: mean it does this seem like two guys who don't
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: really know what they're doing trying to come up with
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: enough NFL offense. I don't know where the number one
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: issue is here with that, because I think the easy
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: answer is to say they have two guys that don't
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: no offense inside and out like Josh McDaniels does, or
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: even a Mike McDaniel on the other side on Sunday.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: But at the same time, I think all offseason and
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: all training camp as well preseason, we kept on here
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: that the Patriots were simplifying the offense. They were streamlining
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: it is how Bill Belichick put it in a good way,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: like they did they streamlined it too much. Yeah, Like,
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: that's the honest question because with McDaniels, and I know
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: people had some nitpicks with McDaniels as well, but on
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: the whole with McDaniels, creativity was extremely high. Some of
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: the different quarks or tricks that they used with motion,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: with play action to try to gain leverage for receivers,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: to try to get open receivers on the move, things
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: like that. We're always very, very good, and in this
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: game it was just very staggnant. I called it after
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: the game unimaginative, and that's the way that I looked
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: at this. And again, unless you're the two thousand, two
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: thousand and three Indianapolis Colts, you cannot just line up
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: in one two personnel groupings two tight end and eleven
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: and just run plays against an NFL defense that's good
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: like Miami and expect to score forty points like it's
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: just not gonna work. We have a surprise new guest,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: um Well, I'll protect your ennemy, Fred Kay joining the show.
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: I just want to say, you know, before Fred jumps
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: in and gives us his thoughts too, um Is, I'm
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: sorry to disappoint most people who I thought I felt
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: would probably waiting for Evan to come in and tell
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: you how wrong Paul was about everything. But Evan, I
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: want to commend you for having a very for having
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: a very similar takeaway from the entirety of the game
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: as Mike and I did. Yeah, because I think Mike,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: you and I were we watched enough. Yeah, So sorry,
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: far as Felger would say, sorry, I would love to
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: go on the tape and be like, oh wow, this
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: actually wasn't This was better than I thought that. I
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: would love to look at the offensive I heard that once.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: I heard it fifteen times Monday morning. It was as
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: bad as I thought. They moved the Paul better than
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: I thought. It was worse than what were you watching? Well,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: let me ask you this, though, I mean, how many
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: instances were there that you felt like Mac just wasn't
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: seeing it and didn't hit the play like it could
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: have potentially had. I would say three or four times.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: And the main thing that I saw about what he
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: wasn't seeing was, you know, they're trying to attack a
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: certain area of the defense. And this is what I
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: thought was concerning gone Mac and I wrote about it
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: in my film review, is that last year you never
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: saw him read the coverage incorrectly very often. He's a
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: very cerebral quarterback. The one thing that he definitely can
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: hang his hat on is his mental capabilities. And he
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: never really saw too many instances like I could probably
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: count like one or two plays a game where I
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: said I probably didn't read it out correctly. There in
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: this game, there was a lot of instances of that,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: And I think that that has nothing to do with
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Mac regressing. It's I think more just comfortable level and
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: understanding what's going on around him. And there's a couple
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: of different throws I highlighted in that piece where they're
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: trying to high low defender in the middle of the
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: field and he throws it outside the numbers, or they're
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: trying to do some different things to get guys open.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: But I think the main thing you saw was, look,
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: it was a handful of plays they basically cycled through
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: like Okay, we're gonna run this play four times, we're
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: gonna run this play, we're gonna run this play, We're
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: gonna run this play, and kind of like put them
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: in buckets, right, and then he just kept on cycling
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: through those same plays. I mean, I can't tell you
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: how many times I saw them run what I would
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: call like branch like the vertical on the outside with
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: it out underneath it. They ran that play a dozen
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: times on Sunday, And that's just not the Patriots offense, Like,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: that's not what we're used to seeing. We're used to
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: seeing so much more, just a wider berth of things
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: at their disposal, and that's not what we got. Pred
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: I came down to just here to be educated. I
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: thought you were coming in hot with them. I did
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: that for yesterday. Yeah, there's a difference. You learned me something.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: So Evan, who is our guy who really watches the tape? Right,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: I'm sure as have you? Have you been the show
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: the whole show or did you come from Oh you
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: just came in good. So I didn't miss much. Um,
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: how disrespectful to us. So he didn't learn anything yesterday
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: and just staying on the offensive side of the ball. Yeah,
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: how did you feel the line played? Because I hear
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: a lot of people saying it's not Max's fault, it's
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the old line. You know, how did you feel the
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: line played? So there were definitely obviously we know what
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: the strip sack. There was another sack where it was
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: ag Buddis came unblocked up the middle. Those types of
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: plays did happen a few too many times from my liking.
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: But when you actually go ahead and watch it and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: start to tally pressures or like what PFF does when
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: they attract quarterback pressures and things like that. It didn't
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: like amass to that many. But I think what the
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: biggest problem was was that there were instances where Mac
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: was sensing it or feeling the pressure more so. And
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: I'm not saying he was seeing ghosts or anything like that.
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: It's just like guys were getting beating a little bit right,
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: like you have something right like coming a little bit
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: off the edge or it's a stunt, and you know,
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: they twisted up front and Cole Strange and Trent Brown
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: are picking it up on the left side and it
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: gets picked up, but it doesn't get picked up right like.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: It's not like those guys gets stopped in their tracks.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: And that's when the quarterback is going to start to
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: be a little bit skittish in the pocket and feel
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: it a little bit. And I think, you know, the
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: numbers bear this out. The amount of times that Mac
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: had to get the ball out of his hands was
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: too often, and he didn't have that ability to stand
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: in the pocket for three three and a half seconds
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: and really scan the field. And I'm not saying that
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: there were a ton of open receivers that he missed either.
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: But I think that you have to have some more
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: trust or some more continuity on the offensive line to
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: allow him to kind of stand there a little bit more,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: because there was too many times where he you know,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I kind of feel it over here on the left,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: I kind of feel it over here on the right.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: It wasn't necessarily like guys were running through, but you
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: just see sort of little inklings of Okay, this is
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: what he's sensing, this is what he's feeling. Yeah, so
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: it's it's I was like, it's kind of on both ends.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: You know, like Mac could do a better job just
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: moving slightly in the pocket, giving himself more time, and
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: then like you said, you know the line just you know,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: just keeping it a little bit more clean. But it's
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: never going to be perfect. I mean this like rarely,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: when when you do see that perfect pocket, the announces
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: always picking look at that pocket, because it doesn't always
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: happen on every play. In fact, it's rare. Yeah, you know,
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I think like where I'm stuck living right now, and
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: even more so after you know, hearing your observations, it's
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: just you know, I think there's two parts of Mac
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: getting comfortable and Mac you know, learning to trust his
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: pocket presence and you know subtle things that we saw
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: last year where you just seemed to be able to
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: take that nice little step to the left and make
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: a play. But I also wonder like, even if he
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: gets to that level of comfort, is this an offense
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: that is going to work at the NFL level even
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: if he's executing it at at a high level. And
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: a b part to that is are they laying some
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: kind of foundation where you could say, well, they can't
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: do it yet, Well, that's the thing. Are they gonna
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: get Are they going to start to add to this
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: and become more diverse as far as there see Patriots
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: fans don't want to hear we're using the season as
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: a way to grow, but that could be in fact
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: what they're doing. But there's always an element of finding
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: your identity, and you know it doesn't have to be
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: always so extreme one way or the other, but you know,
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: is there an identity to be found within this scheme
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: that they're trying to perform And it just doesn't seem
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: very layered. It doesn't seem very much like like I mean,
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: to your point saying you can. You can do that
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: simple stuff when you have the athletes in pure speed
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: and athleticism to beat guys. But what you had last
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: year was Josh McDaniel's ability to use your elements and
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: have trick plays and little and motion and we're constantly
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: spinning the dial on offense and keeping and that's such
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: a big element of making successful. Now we're seeing these
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: guys who and I still feel like they're underachieving. I mean,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: we talked about that yesterday. It still feels like this
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: group of weapons is and what say, what you're called stink? Yeah,
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: I don't think they sink. Think they have any playmakers.
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: They don't have any dynamic playmakers. No, but but I
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: think they're average. I don't think they have full steps either.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: That's stinking. Yeah. I think they have representative players. They're
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: middling kind of wide receivers. They have a bunch of threes. Yeah.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I'll sound like a broken record with this all season
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: because I don't think it's going to change based off
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: of what we've seen. If they add some what I
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: would call like tools to the play design, right, like
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: motion or play action or RPO or some sort of
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: trick or bell or whistle to what they're doing currently,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: then I can start to get behind it. And I
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: think what you look at with the Dolphins is I'm
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: watching the Dolphins save this is Mike McDaniel. He's a
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: rookie head coach. He's young, he's not an experienced coach.
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: And at that in the very first game that he
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: is coaching as a head coach in the NFL, and
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: the very first game that all these Miami Dolphins are
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: playing in offensively to a first game with Mike McDaniel
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: and so on and so far. I mean Twa and
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Tyreek playing for the first time together in an NFL game,
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: and there was just so much more complexity to what
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: they were doing. And you see the impact that that
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: has on the defenders, Like, okay, so you have jet
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: motion coming across, then there's a play action fake and
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: now we gotta get to our spots and be in
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: the right place defensively. That's a lot of window dressing
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: to dissect for the defense, Whereas with the Patriots, it's
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: just there's two receivers over here. There's two receivers over here,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: everybody go up the field. That's a lot easier to dissect.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: And you see with the Patriots defense, you see linebackers,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: You see their safeties have to get wide because of
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: the jet motion and the other things they were doing
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: pre snap, and all of a sudden, there's just a
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: lot more going on for the defense to account for,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: and the openings, the passing windows are so much larger
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: because guys are getting pulled in different directions by different tricks,
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: by different tools that Mike Vick Daniel has its exposal.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: So Matt Patricia Joe Judge might be newer offensive coaches.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel isn't. But he's a new head coach. And
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: yet in Week one, game one, Miami is already doing
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: all these things. And honestly, I don't think two is
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: that great of a quarterback, but he's able to almost
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: throw for three hundred yards against the Patriots because he's
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: getting all this help and because he has Tyrek Hill,
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: which is obviously very ill. That said, what was your
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: overall impression of the Patriots defense? I thought their front
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: was good. I got the secondary got bailed out a
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: few times by the front. I think what you saw
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: out of the secondary, though, that I did like, was
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: their ability to mix and match coverage, so they were
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: not just playing man or just playing zone. They were
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: able to mix and match and go back and forth
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: it they rotate the safeties a little. I think that
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: hurt them a little with Adrian Phillips going out. I
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: think there was a bigger plan to be a little
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: bit more multiple on the back end that they weren't
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: able to do because Adrian Phillips gets injured. But I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: did like the ability to disguise, and I think that
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: this group kind of like the offense, like you don't
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: have Stefan Gilmore and jac Jackson and Jason McCardy out
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: there anymore or so you have to be able to
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: be a little bit smoke in mirrors, and I thought
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: they had that sequencing going. I am so not concerned
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: about the coaching on defense. Like the coaching on defense
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: look sound. They look like a Patriot defense on tape
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: for the most part. Yeah, there's some one on one
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: matchups that obviously Tyree Hill is going to get his
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: He's gonna get open sometimes. Jaylen wall is a really
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: fast guy too, so he's gonna get some separation. But
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: for the most part, they look like they are in
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: rhythm with each other dad. I think is another positive
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: that you can take away is I think, you know,
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: Bill Steve gard Mayo, like they still have that group
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: playing at a pretty well connected and high level. Yeah yeah,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: it would you say, kind of zone really down similar
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: they're playing cover three and then little man stuff and yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: there was a lot of man coverage on third down.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: They ended up playing twenty four snaps in zone and
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: eleven snaps in man. So and that's past attempts, I
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: should say. So eventually they did play some man. But
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: that was a similar sequence think to what we saw
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: down in the stretch last year. And I know people
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: are gonna say, oh, well, they stunk down the stretch
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: last year, but during the seven game win streak, changing
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: to that type of balance was really what got the
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: defense going. It faded, but hopefully you can tap back
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: into that winning streak and how the defense was playing
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: then and that's what it was. And I think that
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: that's a good identification by the coaching staff because we've
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: ragged on them quite a bit already. That's when Bill
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: took it over, yea, that it gave him beat. It's
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: a good thing for the coaching staff to recognize Okay,
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: we don't have the man coverage guys that we had
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: a couple of years ago. To play man you know,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: sixty percent of the time, that's not going to work
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: with this group. So they've changed and evolved to more
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: zone coverages. Off the beaten topic for the group, I mean,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: do you think the least going in the direction where
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: you just can't get enough cornerbacks to match up with
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: the amount of weapons the teams have in this league?
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: I mean, do you think that there's more of and
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: I know Staley and that kind of stuff is played
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: into a little bit. Do you think, like, I mean,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: it's this part of a conscious decision to say we
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: can't try to just simply be a man team. We
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: need to probably play more zone and man in certain spots.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: But you know what I mean, like there's just so
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: many teams where I don't know who can match up
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: with feeling and justin Jeffers like, who what team out
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: there is? Like, oh yeah, we got two great corners
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: for that in our third corner. You know, like it
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: seems like that might be a direction that the league
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: is going. Generally, it's getting tough. I mean, but in
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: ten years, you know, God willing, we're all still around,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: we might be saying, Wow, the NFL has really shut
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: down the pass. They figured it out, coaches have figured
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: you know, like it goes in cycles, yea, And right
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: now we're in a past happy cycle and the rules
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: have been changed to promote that, and you know everything's
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: leaning toward that. But you know who knows? Yeah, well,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta take it. Let's take this call
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: from Elder real quick. He says, he's gonna say, but
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: Paula might can't. So, Hailder, what's going on? What do
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: you got, hey, doll, how y'all doing today? Good? H
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I'll watched the game too, I had to watch on films.
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: I'd blacked out. What y'all Kate saying is for the team?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: All this a GM Bill and Evans just proved the
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: point about officeive coordinator. The desk was the problem is,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: you know, and plus madness a problem too. You missed
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: some miss some plays, some throws. But you can't do
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: that if you were about getting your bell rung all
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: the time. Last year, our strength was our offensive line.
- 1:17:20Speaker 1: But you got rid of Mason and you got rid
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: of Carressed. Did you get the strange and you got
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: these these other guy on the guard side and it's
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: when you and then, like I said, it's no no trust,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: no bund there yet. Plus you don't have an officersive
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: line or coordinator that's worked the line because you got
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Matt Patricia gonna call plays and he can't do both
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: of the work the line and straighten out strange or
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: tell Brown what's wrong or whoever. So the problem is
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: the head office. And if you know Matt, if you
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: know but Daniel was leaving, you should have got oldt
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: coordinator and then you have somebody training under them. And
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: I don't see why the devil you don't get that
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: boy shot at least least don't about outfit, maybe about
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: moving emotions and play the stuff like that better than
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Matt Patricia and Jod. But like I said, it all
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: goes on feel. And if I can't see, I'm gonna
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: win my bit, get rid of maybe Biggie dropping bombs
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: as usual. Thanks Eldred, All right, yeah, yeah, I mean
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: Bill said, ultimately it's on me. Well before you came in, Fred,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I know that you didn't really care about anything until
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: practice was over. But um, we were talking about Kendrick
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Bourne because you said you didn't miss anything, and because
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Evan just got here the rocket shot you took it.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Me and Mike very very hurt, right, very very hurt.
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: I meant that I didn't miss anything that Evan said, right,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: It was very defensive, right, and Mike and Mike and
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I are very hurt. I didn't even want to read
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: you guys. I know what you feel from Yester. But
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: we were talking about the bill responsibility, and I took
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: a little exception with the whole Kendrick Bourne thing. Tom
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: Curran's report, which I give him all the props in
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the world for being the guy who actually came out
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: with something at least definitive. I'm not telling you why
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: he didn't play snaps on Sunday, but something definitive is
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: to something that happened. Problem. Yeah, you know, of course
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: everybody already knew that based on Twitter because they all
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: immediately right, you know. But but good for Tom Current
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: for actually reporting it. And he sort of indicated that
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: it's Patricia and Borne budding heads. And that's where I
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: take a step back, and it's like that very mill
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: well could be the case, they might not be getting
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: along or whatever, but don't tell me that's why Kendrick
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: Bourne played two snaps on Sunday, because if Bill wanted
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: it another way. Bill has told us many times this summer,
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: don't worry about play calls, don't worry about the process,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: don't worry about this, that and the other thing. It's
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: ultimately all on me. Then I'm responsible for it all.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: It all falls on my shoulders. So when a guy
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: doesn't play in a game, he plays two, Bill has
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: to sign off. That's Bill, that's not Matt Patricia. Don't
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: blame it like this is exactly what we said all offseason.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Everything that goes wrong with this team is going to
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: fall on Maddie p and Joe Judge. And that's not fair.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: It's all Bill. Bill set it up this way, and
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: Bill teld you give the blame to him, right, So
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: now that it's happening, be consistent. Yeah, you know, I
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: don't know if Kern was just stating a fact or
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: at least what he heard. Right. He wasn't saying, oh,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: it's Maddie's fault or anything. I think, but you've seen
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: how it's been been taken. Oh right, absolutely, Yeah, that's
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: not what Kern was saying though, But that's how it
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: was interpreted that no, no, no, and I give I'd
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: be rich if I had a nickel for every time
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: I read this Morning Up. Patricia did the same thing
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: with Malcolm Butler. You know, he didn't like he had
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: a problem with Butler, and he didn't let him play.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: And now he's got a problem with um. Which is
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: why I make my born in mynocky comments of when
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: Evan's talking about the seven game winning s Jake lad No, no, no,
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: that's when Bill took over the defense from them. But
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: and then you know on day after Christmas, when they
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: didn't force a punt from Buffalo, he gave it back
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: to them. He thought they'd had it fixed. But in
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: both those occasions, if you thought, you know, even if
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: Patricia said Bill, I don't think that Malcolm Butler should play,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: if Bill didn't agree with that, Malcolm Butler would have
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: been playing. You know, Bill has to sign off on it. No,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: it's just an easy way to put everything on Matt
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Patricia or on somebody other than Bill. Yeah, and he's
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: the head coach, he's ultimately you know, the Broncos to me,
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: had a complete meltdown Monday night with the way that
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: they handled the last minute. If that was the Patriots,
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: it would be mat Patricia's fault. Right, He's the offensive coordinator,
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: He's the one to go No, it's the head coach
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: who's dictating what you're doing. Now. I know Nathaniel Hackett
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: is calling them. I understand the differences, but he's the
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: head coach. He's deciding what you're doing. Right, He's the
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: one who said no, no no, no, we're gonna go for
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: the sixty four yard field goal. Yet not the offensive coordinator,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: not the wide receivers coach, on the offensive line coach,
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: whatever the case may be. That's I mean, that's why
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: they get paid a lot of money. There's only thirty
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: two of them, right, they get a lot of responsibility
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: and they have to take the credit and the blame.
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: And the other part of the report too, was that
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: that mister Kraft noticed it. I forget how they worded
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: it exactly like he took made it like really like
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: I don't know. I just remember in training camp. I
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: think we were doing the show up on the ramps
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: during Carolina joint practices and we laid out the Kendrick
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Boorne timeline. Yeah, all the things that had gone on,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: and we didn't even know about the showing up that
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: was to break out, right, We didn't even know about
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: that yet. And we were because at that time we
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: were seeing Kendrick Boorne rep as the fourth receiver on
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: the depth chart, and all of us were writing and
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: talking about why is Kendrick Borne falling down the depth chart?
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: And now Tom Kerrn reports that there's also a late
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: meeting or whatever it was on game day and this
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: has been going on. My point is this has been
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: going on for a lot longer than just Sunday, Like,
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: this has been going on for weeks, and we saw
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: in training camp he was not a big part of it.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: In training camp he was down on the depth chart then.
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that I agree with it, but
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: I'm just saying that if you read all of the
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: between the lines, this is not new with Kendrick Bourne,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: that he is not a major part of their offense.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: He had a very quiet training camp. He was repping
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: a lot with like the one bees right, the four string,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: fist string guys in terms of the wide receiver group.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: And here we are he's not a big part of
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: the offense. I mean, what does it say about him
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: as it like that he can't get this remedial offense,
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: like like I mean, is he just No, I don't think.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: I think he thinks he knows the offense better than
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: they do. This is his offense in theory. Who born
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: you mean? Yeah, because when you're not talking about Cisco No, No,
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: I was. Yeah, I don't know if it was current
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: story or something I read it. It wasn't that he
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: didn't get it. He wasn't targeted or no. Yeah, he
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: wasn't on board with how they were installing it, how
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: they were going about it. That's what I'm saying. He
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: knows it better than they he feels he does, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, again,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: like Evan said, I'm not telling you that's what it is, right,
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: I'm just telling you that's the problem. Yeah, So I
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: I don't know. It's well, the other part that we said, uh,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: Freddie at the beginning was now you like watch how
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: this unfolds, you know, Mike brings up Robert evidently said,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: you know, took note of it. So I'm assuming that
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Kendrick Bolle is gonna be a bigger party in the
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: owner's box with no question mark question mark question mark no,
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: ask Bill about he's going to talk. Doesn't he has
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: someone who would write that for him, So where's my
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: note person? I assume that Bourne will be a bigger party.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: I mean, he can't be a smaller party being active
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: if if it's any less than what he was Sunday, right,
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: I'm assuming he's going to play back to a regular
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Kendrick Boe role in terms of number of snaps. Okay,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: and now everyone's gonna think it's because Robert told him
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to do No Bill, Bill told pet should knock it off,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: play him, he's one of your better player. No, yeah, No,
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: I think it's going to be Patricia's fault that he
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: didn't play in the first game. Okay, like continuation, but
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: everything is Matt Patricia's. There will be that, There will
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: be that, and it doesn't mean you can't criticize. Like
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: Evan had a very detailed breakdown of all the things
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: they're not doing in terms of imagination offensively, so a
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: lot of that comes under Matt Patricia. He's the guy
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: who's supposed to be running the offense, and they used
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: to be in extremely imaginative offense in terms of finding
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: ways to get the ball to different guys in space
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: and you know, the same lack of playmakers. They were
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: finding ways to get guys wide open last year at times.
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: Now it definitely petered out down the stretch. But he
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: gets blamed for everything. Yeah, everything. I just don't get it.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: I don't get why they thought how they thought this
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: would work, like to to just will kind of wing
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: it with an offense. We'll put in some wide zone
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: runs and you know, we'll just simplify will only run
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: a very limits the thing. You know, we're assuming, because
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: Patricia is calling the plays that he's also the architect
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: of the offense. That may not be the case, and
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: it could Bill better be Bill, Like, are you talking
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: about the architect of an offense? You're talking about a
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: guy who innovates an offer. No, no, no no, I'm talking
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: about like, going into this game, somebody said we're gonna
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: play at Vanilla. We're not going We're gonna you're talking
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: about the game Planet SLF going in? Who who who
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: said before the game, here's what we're gonna do offensively,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: here's you know, and Bill has to be the guy
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: that signs off on that class or at the very
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: least once he sees this isn't working. He's the guy
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: who tells Patricia, Okay, open it up a little bit,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: let's let's use some little smoke and mirrors, as Evan
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: likes to put it. But those things just feel like
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: basic necessary elements for an NFL offense that if you
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: don't do them and you don't have some kind of
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: disguise to your attack, that other teams are gonna tea off.
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: It does. But you know, blame ourselves because this is
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: what we saw all summer, them trying to do rudimentary things,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: albeit some of them new, and not doing it well.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: And you know, Bill is a process guy, as he's
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: used that word, B doesn't come before A. You got
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: to do A before you get to be. And maybe
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: that's again how he's approaching the season. We got to
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: get a right before we can move on to B,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: and you know, let alone see and maybe that's what
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: he's doing. And again, Patriots fans may not like to
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: hear that because they want results now, but maybe Bill's
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: taking a more patient approach. Maybe I just need to
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: see progression, and I just I want to feel like
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: you're putting Mac in the best position to succeed, which
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: is just something I feel like I've been saying since
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: the day last season ended, of what is a bigger
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: priority than making sure he's comfortable and knows what he
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: is doing? And you know, to Paul's point that he's
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: been hammering, he doesn't look comfortable, he doesn't look like
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: he's seeing what they're trying to do. And if it
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: really is simple, is it simple enough? Is it like? What? Like? What?
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: What's where's the disconnect? If this is a simple offense
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: that somehow you can all get on the same page,
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: maybe it's just the breakdowns are killing them and they
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: don't have confidence and therefore it's just not working. But again,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: that's kind of the point I'm stuck in the middle of.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Maybe they're overthinking it. I don't know, Maybe Mac is
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: I think it's it's not complimentary football, right, And I
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: don't mean like the three phases and all that. What
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: I mean is is like with McDaniels, Okay, you run
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: power on first down, right guard poles run up to
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: the linebacker. Now here comes second and four. Now we're
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: gonna run power play actions. So we're gonna show you
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: the same action of the guard pulling, but now instead
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: of being a run play. It's play action, and now
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: we're throwing it at you and you're building a complimented things,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: right and then in the third quarter, we're gonna do
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: something else, all right, right in the third quarter, Like
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: against Buffalo in the in the win game, when they
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: throw a ball three times, they start the game with
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: the backside poll. Then in the second half they go
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: g lead, they go the front side poll. Now all
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: of a sudden, you're showing the defense two different looks,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: same poll, but different areas of the offense. In this
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: offense right now, and the play calling on Sunday, it
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: felt like it was like, Okay, we got this bucket,
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: this bucket and this bucket, and like this time we're
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: gonna run this bucket. Now we're gonna run that bucket.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: And the buckets were not together. The buckets need to
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: be together. And I think that that's the biggest thing
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: that you see with Mac. It's like what is our identity?
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: Like what are our what are we sequencing? What are
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: we trying to do here? Because right now it feels like, oh,
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: well it's first and ten, let's go under center. Okay,
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: it's second and four. Now we're gonna go spread now
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: we're gonna go back under center. Now we're gonna do this,
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: and it just there's no continuity to what they're doing
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: on offense. And I think that you hear that it's
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: going to be a lot of Okay, well, isn't that
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: on the play caller? But I think what it's more
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: on is that there's not there's not enough birth to
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: the offense. There's not enough options at their disposal to
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: be different, to do some different things that showed some
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: different wrinkles. They're like playing Madden on when you can
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: do like this simple playbook and it only gives you
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: like four police stitching. That's what it feels like. It's
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: just like even a Madden I'm going through dozens of
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: players play action. Sure, I got our pos I got
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: the whole thing. Yeah, and to the Kendrick Bourne point.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: And we were talking about this earlier. I don't want
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: to rag on DeVante Parker, but DeVante Parker getting the
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: most snaps out of the wide receivers on Sunday feels
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: a little bit weird to me. He's really really good
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: at what he does. He's a big body, he's good
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: with contested catches, But I don't want Davante Parker being
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: the one that's stretching the defense right, Like, if you're
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: on the outside with Davanta Parker and I mentioned earlier,
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: they're trying to run like the vertical with the out right.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: Nobody on Miami's defense when DeVante Parker was the on
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: that side of the field running the vertical, nobody cared
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: about DeVante Parker. They were not even looking at him.
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: They were just like, we know you're trying to We
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: know you're trying to clear the out. You know, we're
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: trying to clear out the sideline. You know you're trying
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: to throw the out to Jcobe Myers, and we're just
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: gonna sit all over it. So at one point is
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: I think somebody posted the play on Twitter and Max
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: doing all the and signals and he's he's doing all
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: these things. Check they check. They check into the play
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: and it's vertical out on the sideline and two guys
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: go to Jacobi on the out route because DeVante Parker
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: is the one clearing out the sideline and there's no
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: threat on the vertical. So what with DeVante Parker, Hey,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: I would limit his snaps a little bit, like I
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: don't think he should be playing what was it fifty
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: nine snaps or whatever it was on Sunday. Give some
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: of those to Kendrick Bourne, who deserves him right and
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: should be playing more. But secondly to that, Nelson Agloor
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: is your clearout guy, like he's your speed guy, So
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: why isn't he the one that's clearing out the coverage
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: like what he did last year? That's the role they
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: played him every down outside the same thing Parky. So
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: Parker's a guy that you can get use in situations
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: like I think he's a viable red zone threat for
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: them to throw, you know, a fade or something like that.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: I think on third down if he's got a matchup
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: that you like, where he's match up against a smaller
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: corner and you think he can maybe box somebody out
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: or Mike Cheef I tortured Mike District. But yeah, I mean,
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I guess it's okay. We can talk about that now.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Like I just didn't get it. I didn't get it
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: from the start. I didn't see him as a guy
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: who was gonna put any kind of stress on the defense.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: Doesn't mean I don't want him to have a role.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: And I think Evan's examples of things that he does. Well,
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: that's a role for him. And if that's like twenty
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: five thirty snaps, you know, you get backed up penalty
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: third and long. You know, maybe you're read your own
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: forty third and fifteen. You know, that's a hard that's
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: a hard conversion. Maybe throw one up on the sideline.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: See if he wins, wins a one on one battle,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: you know, gets a flag, you know, competing like on
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: a play like Sunday. Maybe he draws the flag the
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: next time when Howard has his shoulder. Um, but I
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: don't think that he's a guy that I have to
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: have everything revolving around. And when you play every snap,
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: you're telling me that that's the guy you feel the
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: best about all the time. Right, I want him on
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: the field. I want Born and Agilore on the field
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: together at least some of the time. I think those
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: are your two most explosive guys. I'm not telling you
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: those guys are Jalen Waddle and Tyreek Hildy're not but
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: for the for this team, they're the fastest two receivers
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: they have. I mean, it's anybody gonna argue with that. No,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Thornton out right right, right, Yes, well that one was
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: in there, that would be different, right, And I think Evan,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: I mean, I remember you making the point during one
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: of the preseason things where they think at some point
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: they had Aglare and Thornton on the field together and
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: it was just like, oh, there's actually a couple of
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: guys that route concept that Evan's talking about, and you
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: have Agilore going streaking down the side. I don't think
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: Xavian Howard can just peek into the backfield and not
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: really worry about him. Yeah, he's got to make sure
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: he runs with him. He knew Parker wasn't running by him,
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: which is a comment that I made several times when
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: I called him Nikhil Parker throughout the offseason. He doesn't separate,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: he can still can actually correct. He's a lot better
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: player than Nikil Harry because of his ability to win
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: those one on one battle and and and make some
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: contested catches. So I think that gives him some value
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: that Harry didn't. But I just don't think that he's
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: a like one hundred percent play time kind of guy.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: But to your point, then play him like you played Harry,
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: like he's not your every down we need this guy
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: on the field. We need the defense thinking at all times.
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: So what might they do with DeVante Parker? You know?
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: And even you know? But and then you gotta think
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: one's gonna have a role. But if you're gonna play
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: him like you played Harry, then you whiffed on a
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: free agent signing, right, I mean, yeah, you made money
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: and you didn't pay him to play. Like does he
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: have to play every down to get down? But he Yeah,
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: I see what you're saying for it, and I think
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: he would play probably more than that, But I know it,
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: Mike Man, it's not necessarily the number of snaps. But
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: like he's sort of you know, like the other guy,
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: he's a role and I think you might be able
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: to get him in the red zone. He specific set
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: of skills, right, He's that big group, right, Like this
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: whole group is not necessarily one dominant receiver. It's that
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: all of them together do some different things well, right,
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: Nelson agalarc And I don't think they stink when you
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: said stink, I don't think the receiver were stinking, right,
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: But then you have to use them right and maximize
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: the role that they're using him in what their skill set,
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: and to spin it forward to Pittsburgh, they play a
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: ton of zone coverage. So the one thing that you
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: want to do with the zone team, you want to
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: flood the zone, right, So if you don't have anybody
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: that can clear out over the top to clear out
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: the zone on the boundary, to clear out the zone
- 1:35:27Speaker 1: over the top, then it's going to be smothering the
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: intermediate and the short stuff. Again and Mac completed one
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: pass between ten and twenty yards wells minutes left in
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: a two score in the NFL, Despite the halves and
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: the have nots, it's close enough where I don't care
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: if it's defense or offense. You cannot be predictable because
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: the other team will will eventually stop you. You can't
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: be predictable in this league. What I wouldn't give to
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: just hear what Brian Flores is thinking breaking down unless
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: you're unless you're amazing, well that have to be elite predicted.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: That's like when when we're talking about their receivers, like
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: Cedric Wilson, would you guys think, what do you guys
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: think of Cedric Wilson. He's like he's a good player. Yeah,
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: if you had three Cedric Wilson's instead of Cedric Wilson
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: is number three behind Waddle and Hill. I don't think
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: your receiving corps is very good. I would take Cedric
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Wilson on my team any day. Kendrick Bourne Nelson age,
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: I think those guys are okay, But if you have
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: just Cedric Wilson, you don't have much. Yeah, And I
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: think that's what the Patriots have now complimentary altogether. There
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: should be ways that they can figure out to make
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: these guys more than match Mac and the offensive coordinator.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: I'm glad that you said it that way, or whoever
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: is you know, dictating the scheme of the of the
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: gotta make some play. It's gotta be Mac in the
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: coordinator to make that happen, to use those pieces, you know,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: and maximize their abilities. Well, I mean, we got a
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: couple of email Clay about this. We talked about in
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: the first hour of the show. Where's your confidence level
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: with Mac Jones right now? At a scale one to ten? No,
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: on a scale of just how do you feel? I
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: mean then, because I mean, you know, we had an
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: emailer said, basically, since the Buffalo win game, throw maybe
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: the Jacksonville game out you just you haven't really seen
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: a good game from him against you know, good opponent,
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: and you know it's we're into a second year now.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: At some point it's got to it's got to turn
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: around and look better. I have a tough time with
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: gauging what's going on with Mac right now because I
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: don't know how much of it is that Mac is
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: what he is right now, which is probably like an
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: average NFL quarterback but nothing special or elite, and they're
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: just not maximizing his skill set, and the tools at
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: his disposal or not help are not enough for him.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Because we're talking about, you know, the things that we
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: were trying to do on Sunday on offense, and is
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Mac throwing ten yard outs the best thing for Mac Jones? Like,
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: is that really his skill set, like to be driving
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: the ball to the sideline? Or is his skill set
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: the middle of the field that's really where they should
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: be living. And I think I sent the picture to you,
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Mike where it's like everything is either a checkdown or
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: it's outside the numbers and the middle of the field
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: is just a waste land of zero targets. Yeah, Like
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: there's just nothing going on in the middle field. Whatsoever,
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: And I posted for one off a linebacker's asking, Yeah,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: that was the one I think you should before that.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: When he has trouble in terms of you know, getting
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: near pits, it's usually down the middle he has troubled.
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: To Evans point, well maybe he just doesn't have the
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: arm for it, right, you know, And the world's missed
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: out on a high level of entertainment by not having
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: Mike Deso's face live over the air. On the very
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: first pass of the game that he threw a like
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: a nine yard out to Jacoby Myers that took up
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: twenty five minutes to complete, and the look on Mike's
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: face was like just sheer terror. Like the ball was
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: like doesn't like incoming, doesn't come out, doesn't doesn't fly.
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: And you think that that is just a physical thing
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: or a mental thing where he's just not confident enough
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: to step in and drive it. I mean, I think
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: it's a physical thing. But I think that, you know,
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: to Evan's point, I think his biggest skill was anticipation
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: and no one where to throw, and I think it's
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: you know, it's really hard to throw those throws with
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: perfect anticipation. I mean, I think of maybe Brady in
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Super Bowl fifty one and overtime to Amandolo with that
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: one where it was just an average you know, one
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: of those total smoker right on the sideline, he gets
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: two feet in right at the you know. I mean
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: it's just it's flawless. So it's you know, but I
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: think Devan's point when you have a little crossers going
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: in front of you and you can see and I
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: mean I think when I rewatched it, those were some
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: of the ones that I felt like he missed. It
- 1:39:52Speaker 1: was you know, it was that was was just disturbing
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: to me, was that he was missing ones that I
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: thought he was good on last year, which is just
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: middle of the field there it is, get him, you know,
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Jona Smith's got a step on a guy, give it
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: to him down There wasn't a ton of it. But
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: that's what I think is distressing, is just that you know,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: they're not they're not losing with what he did best
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: last year. They're kind of losing with what we didn't
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: really think he did well. He's a quick game quarterback, right,
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: get the ball out of your hands, run, you know,
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: slant flat hitch, you know, things like that. Quick game
- 1:40:21Speaker 1: and then He's also somebody that I think can make
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: layer throws over the middle of the field. I don't
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: want him to drive it up the seam twenty yards
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: down the field, but if they can highlow a guy
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: in the middle of the field and maybe get him
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: at ten yard target down the middle of the field,
- 1:40:33Speaker 1: that's what I want to see more of. And that's
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: what they were doing enough of on Sunday to me,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: was really stressing that middle of the field coverage. Now,
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: I think, to Mike's point, like a good thing about
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: Mac that I like also is just his ability to
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: see things quickly and process things. But he wasn't somebody
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: last year that would take would be too overaggressive, and
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: I thought on Sunday at times he was a little
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: bit over aggressive with the football, like the DeVante Parker interception.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: I think Belichick said it on Monday morning. Usually that
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: pay doesn't get intercepted. It's usually like a fifty fifty ball,
- 1:41:10Speaker 1: it gets deflected or it gets caught and it falls
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: on the ground and we play the next down. That's fine,
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: but you're talking about crossing grats right on that play
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: in the middle of the field they had. They're in
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: twelve personnel. They have the tight at Johnny on one side,
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: Hunter Henry on the other side, and they crossed in
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: the middle of the field and both of them I
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: think had body positioning to make a play on it.
- 1:41:30Speaker 1: Johnny was the underneath crosser, Henry was like a little
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: bit further up the field on kind of like a
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: levels type of concept, and they had that opportunity to
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: throw there, and instead he attacks Xavian Howard of all
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: people over the top against DeVante Parker on first down,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: like even Hunter Henry was it would have been a
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: tight throw. But we've seen Hunter Henry box out and
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: make plays like that a lot over the last two years.
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: Johnny has got like a step on a linebacker coming
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: over the middle, and he's your yat guy, Like if
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: you could put the ball in front of him, put
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: the ball on his hands, like on that play, who knows,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: like that could be that could be a ten yard game.
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: Maybe he breaks the tackle in the high red zone
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: and all of a sudden he's in the end zone.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: You just don't know. But instead he forces it outside
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: the numbers on the fade to Parker and it gets intercepted.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: He's got to be able to take the bunnies, like
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: the layups that are there in this offense. They don't
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: have the luxury for him to be over aggressive. And
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: I see a lot of people that say, oh, well,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: like people want Mac to be a gun slinger. I
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: don't want Mac to be a gun slinger, like he's
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: not Patrick Mahomes like, I don't want him to be
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: a gun slinger. I want him to make the smart decision,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: throw to the open guy. Parker was not the open guy.
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: Johnny Smith was the open guy, make the easy throws
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: and let everything else take care of itself. Yeah, they're
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: gonna put the ben voland offense in next year. I
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: think that'll he'll be the OCE next year. With his
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: piece today book getting away from Runt to anyone see
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: that everyone's looking to be blank, so I can yeah,
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: I did see it, but I choose general terms. I
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: would just say no to tackle that one. He came
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: in high, but I voland came in high yesterday on
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: Maddy p just kind of I'm like, all right, this
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: ought to be good. And then it was like a
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: question about establishing the run, and I'm like that's kind
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: of strange. But then today you saw why that he was,
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: you know, kind of saying that stemming off of David
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: Andrews saying that they lost their fast ball and they
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: couldn't run run the ball anymore, and how bad it
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: is that that's their fast ball running the ball. I'm sorry,
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: we're all dumber now for having listened to me. Explains now. No,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: but I would argue one of those things like did
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: you stop running the ball effectively ordered to score stop
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: you from running the ball, because I think both of
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: those things are kind of true. I think they got
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: off to a great start running the ball, but I
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: think they petered out. Yeah, and I think Steve ran
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: two run concepts, and when you only run two run
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: concepts the entire game, the defense figures out what you're
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: doing eventually, and it's kind of like a script like
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: they like their game plan in general specifically worked. They
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: came out and had the best success that they had
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: right out of the locker room. The problem was the
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: other team figures it out and adjust. Now what do
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: you do? And they didn't have any answers right when
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: I was based on with everybody's telling me it was
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: a lot of the same kind of stuff over and
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: over again. It worked initially, and I can see why
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: they stuck with We talked about that yesterday. I could
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: see why the first drive was a lot of repetition
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: because it worked. And then that's when Mike and I disagreed.
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: Like I didn't think taking a shot is all well
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: and good, but if the guy's not open, you can't
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: just take a shot when the other guys better than you.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: A guy, especially unless he's liking and I would strongly
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: disagree also with the notion that those deflections don't generally
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: end up in interceptions harms way, I think I think
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: deflections more up. Oh, he didn't say that, though he
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: said those passes don't usually end up as well. I
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: would say contested balls get deflected a lot. Well, he didn't,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: he meant. He just said those types of passes don't
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: normally end up being intercepted because they're thrown in such
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: a way where only one guy has a shot at it.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: It was a bad throw. I thought he was through it.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: I think he unders threw him a little bit too,
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: but I don't think so. I think it was a
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: worst throw. Yes, and it's first and ten from the
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: twenty two twenty three yard so go somewhere else, right,
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: That's what I would say. Even like I said on
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: the crossers were in the middle of the field with
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: Henry and Johnny, Like even if john a gainst five yards,
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: Now it's second and five, you're in the red zone,
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: you're inside the twenty, and you play another down and
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: you've had nothing really at that point, nothing but successful plays. Right,
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: it was five yards, seven yards, twelve yards, six yards.
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: Like everything that they were doing was matriculating the ball
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: down the field. Boys, Like everything was working. Yeah, you
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: talk about the run game, though, Damian Harrison Romander Stevenson
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: are two of their more dynamic players with the ball
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: in their hands. So going away from those two guys,
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: I think is a huge mistake. I think that would
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: be a really big mistake. And I'm not a run
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: game type of guy. I liked the analytics. I know
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: you're supposed to pass the ball more in today's NFL,
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: But when Damien Harrison reminders Stevenson are gotta be two
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: year better skill players to take the ball out of
- 1:45:53Speaker 1: their hands. But I think with the run game, I
- 1:45:56Speaker 1: remember last year in Buffalo, I went back to the
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: win game. I'll go back to it again. I think
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: I charted sixteen different run plays that they ran, Like,
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: it's just sixteen different schemes that they ran in that game.
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: In Buffalo, they ran crack toss and they ran inside zone.
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: That was it. That was all they did. In this game.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: They had a couple of wide zone outside zone plays
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: and I think they had three of those, so they
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: ran probably five concepts. And you don't have a fullback anymore.
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: You're not running the gap downhill stuff as much anymore.
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: So same with the passing game, like you're just running
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: the same plays over and over again, and eventually the
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: defense figures it out, and that's exactly what Miami does.
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: And then you throw in there that you're not running
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: play action, So now you only run two play action passes.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: So what's keeping Miami off of the line of scrimmage, Like,
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: what's keeping them from stopping to run? Absolutely nothing? So yeah,
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: it worked early on, but they had nothing to go
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: to once Miami figured it out. Yeah, I just wondered,
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: where's the middle ground? Like why, you know, I get it,
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: We don't need to run all these different const EPs
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: and the volume of that must be overwhelming in terms
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: of the playbook and the players but you also can't
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: run zero, you know, and and that's why I just
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: i'd love to have some kind of explanation that makes
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: sense to me if this offense is really as you know,
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: simple as we're seeing here early on, of what was
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: the plan? I mean, I'm sure that what was the
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: plan like, but but I'm sure that the Bill Belichick
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: when he decided he was going to fix this or
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: you know, redo this offense, that there was a plan of,
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: you know, how can we get our offense executing? You
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: can't look at the NFL right now without not thinking
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: about you got to put up thirty points a game, like,
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: I mean, that's kind of the bare minimum requirement to
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: be one of the elite teams in the league. So again,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: maybe it will progress, but I just i'd love to
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: hear explain to me how how this is going to work.
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: If this is really simpler and it's going to be
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: simpler for our players to execute, but the other team
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: apparently is going to know exactly what's going on to
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: and not really have a problem trying to figure out
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: how to stop it. The most optimistic view I've heard
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: of this whole thing is what Fred said, which was
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: maybe there is. Maybe they have to get aid correct
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: before they move on to be so maybe they're getting
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: inside zone correct. So then we can run inside zone
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: and then next week we can run inside zone play action,
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: and now we can put the two things together and
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: here we go. Now we have the offense. And maybe
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: they feel the same way about the route concepts, like
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: we're trying really hard to run these three route concepts
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: first and then we're going to start building in some
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: much different tweeks. Should that be an issue with the
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: amount of experience their players, all the professional football players,
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: like I mean, like well professional football players that have
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: all been here. Yeah, even you know, they're not all rookies.
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: Tak Thornton is the only rookie. I mean, we're not ready.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: We're not ready for play action yet, guys, we're not
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: ready for play actions. Yeah, Like why do we Why
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: why have we not gotten a down to use Fred's
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: you know, analogy or why are we still working on
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: a because it really seems like a maybe like the
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: the the focus this year is to make sure they're
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: playing better into member than they are in September. So
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: they set a low bar in September. They can only
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: get better in December. I asked the question to McDaniels
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: last year about saving things for later on in the season,
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: they're saving things from the playoffs, and he was like,
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: trust me, if I had a play up on our
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: white board that it was a guaranteed touchdown, I wouldn't
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: be saying to myself, you know what, I'm just gonna
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: wait to call that in January, Like, we're not going
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: to call that until we get I don't think they
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: really do, that is my point. Like, I don't think
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: they really save things so much as maybe they get
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: to a point later on in the season where a
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: specific matchup or a ponent or something like that is
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: better for certain things. But I don't think that they
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: sit there and they say, oh, this is the winning
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: for anything. When the Patriots were good, they go back
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: to things that worked later in the season. And I
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: would I would say that maybe in their heyday, when
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: you know, the good old days, that Deuce was bored
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: um and um didn't have any fun when you went
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: to the season. Now, when you went to the season
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: knowing you were going to be in the AFC Championship game,
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: was just to whether or not it was going to
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: be here. Or somebody or somewhere else. I would say,
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: there's there's maybe a chance that, say, like let's say
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: it was them in Indie or them in Pittsburgh or
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: them in Denver later on, you know what's going to
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: be those two teams. If they played in the regular season,
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: you could convince me that maybe they held some stuff
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: back knowing they we're going to see that team again
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: in the playoffs. Yeah, you might be able to convince
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: me that they didn't empty all barrels, right, But you
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: can't tell me that as a general rule, they're going
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: into regular seasons a not caring about September results and
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: be not worrying about doing what's best to win that
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: particular game each week. But my thinking is it's not
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: that they don't care, it's that Bill knows if I
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: go too fast, it's going to be even worse. So
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: I've got to take it one step at a time
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: with this team for whatever reason. And like you said, Paul,
- 1:50:51Speaker 1: it's weird because there's not a lot of rookies out
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: on the field, and I know, well, there there's one, yeah, range, right, Yeah,
- 1:50:59Speaker 1: that's it. And if you have to hold back for
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: one guy, then that's not good either. You're not holding
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: back for a guard unless unless you unless you consider
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: like the changes are enough to make Mac essentially a
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: rookie again, you know, I don't know, yeah, because again
- 1:51:16Speaker 1: we can't emphasize enough. It's Mac, it's mackets Mac. Yeah,
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: you good or bad. You had said something about the
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: outs a while ago. You know, is that a physical thing?
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: But you know, can he get it there? Or is
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: it a mental thing? And I do think that Mike
- 1:51:29Speaker 1: is right in general, like I don't think that's a
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: strength of his. I think he has to throw those
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: with some sort of anticipation to make sure he he
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: gets it, and that's a strength of his. But I
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: also think right now, I didn't see this last year,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: but I've seen it this year, the mental part of it.
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: And it's not necessarily not knowing what he's doing. It's
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: not trusting what he's doing, yes, and what he's seeing.
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: And the past rush I think has been honestly trusting
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: the offensive line. He's not trusting what he's getting. And
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: I thought, you know, again, we talked about this a
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: lot yesterday before you came back. There was a stat
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: out there about the tiny percentage of plays that he
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: got more than three seconds to throw. Yeah, And you know,
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: Mike and Fred immediately were like, well, how many of
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: those did he just throw immediately upon getting the snap
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: because he's just taking a check down or whatever. And
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: I'm not that might be the play, But don't tell me, like,
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: how many percentage of plays that took him to throw
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: the ball inside of three seconds? Tell me the percentage
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: of snaps that he was truly pressured on, yeah, because
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: I don't think that was an abnormally high number. Certainly
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: wasn't as bad as it was early last year. Miami
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: killed him in the opener last year. Yeah, that was
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: where he's sort of like throwing it backwards. He first
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: play of his career he threw backwards, right, But they
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: were all over him that day. Flores blitzed him mercilessly. Yeah,
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I don't think they blitzed mercilessly the other day the
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: same way. Now, the biggest play of the game was
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: a blitz. Yeah, but but it also was only a
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: five man pressure right. Bill said they had the enough
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: people to block, they just didn't do it right. That
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: was one of the big things I watched in the game. Again,
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: that for me, it was like I think those free
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: rusher plays kind of overshadowed it, and it's part of
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: this story this summer of like the offensive line stink,
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: so people glommed onto that. But otherwise I thought that
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: there were pockets there. I don't. I don't think it
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: was great, but it wasn't the problem like when listen,
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: it's one of those you know, other than that, how
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: was the play? This is Lincoln, right, you know you
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: can't have the two sacks that they gave up. Not
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: like that. You can allow two sacks, but not because
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: there are two different plays that you just didn't block anybody. Yeah,
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: you get beat physically, fine, but you just nobody puts
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: a hand on him or even looks at him. So
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: I'm not trying to tell you the offensive line was great.
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: It wasn't, but I don't think it was as bad
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: it was. Balance of the thirty Yeah, those are mental mistakes,
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: like a guy got bull rushed and like we just
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: don't have a guy. Okay, their guy was stronger than
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: our guy or had a jump on us. Yeah, the
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: balance of the thirty two dropbacks. I don't think he
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: was like under siege. There were times that he had
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: pressure and certainly that rough and the passer made and
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: he had a lot of pressure for what it's worth,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: And I don't know, reading the room, I'm not sure
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: you guys are gonna like the analytics, but I'm gonna
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: do it. Anyways, PF had the Patriots and had the
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: Dolphins defense with four pressured dropbacks the whole game, and
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: you look at ESPN pass rush win rate, same thing.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: The Patriots actually graded out pretty well in terms of
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: pass blocking out. That didn't pass the eye test to me,
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: but I don't think it was nearly as bad in
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: pass protection as maybe people thought, because you and it
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: happens to all of us, like the strip sac just
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: like stands out right in your head, and just as
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: an analytic guy, Okay, this is what I would have
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: because I agree with exactly the way you said it.
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: Four seems kind of low, but I don't think it
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: was much worse than that. Yeah, so you know, we
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: don't have to, you know, get into a fight on semantics.
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: But if you were doing the analytics, yeah, what would
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: you grade the sack? But the two sacks because I
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: don't think that was like a pass rush win or loss.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: No one blocked them. It wasn't it was poor execution.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: It was does that not count in the four like right?
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Among the endage of wind rate? Right? If I had
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: because even one of those guys, if I had to assign,
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: like who gave up the sack team, I would not
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: assign it to an individual player without knowing the call, right,
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: because I I don't know what who was responsibility was.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: I can I can guess or have an educated guess
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: at it. Like on the strip sack, my educated guess
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: would be that was Trent Brown's guy, but at the
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: same degree. But at the same time, when a guy
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: is blitzing from the second level, we kind of disguises
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: it comes up to the line of scrimmage and he's
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: further out than a wide nine, he's like a wide eleven. Well,
- 1:55:31Speaker 1: that's the other thing he's supposed to get that guy
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: because Hunter Henry was next to him. Right, So now
- 1:55:37Speaker 1: Trent Brown has a patriot in between him and a
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: guy creeping up that you didn't know for sure was
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: going to be there, Right? Is there a chance that
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: he didn't really even know he was there? Yes, and
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: just blocked down. I think he was already turned and engaged. Well,
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: then I wonder if it's Maack to point it out
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: at that point, does he need it reload? And that's
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: why I took sort of note of Bill saying, well,
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: we had you know, it was five five, we had,
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: we had that we had enough guys to block them,
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: and then Mac the next day saying, yeah, better ask
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: Bill about the XS and os, because I think that
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: that was like I think Mac took that as like,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: don't tell me I'm supposed to alter the protection there.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: We're coming down to the stretch here. Let's grab Jeff
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: Jeff in Texas real quick. Hey Jeff, what's going on?
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: Hey guys? Hey, hey, Um, so I had a play
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: like listening to Um And this actually goes back coming
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: into the season all along everybody complaining about, you know,
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: Patricia and Joe Judge making the calls, but and then
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: just listening to what Evans said about his report on
- 1:56:37Speaker 1: how you know Vanilla, Um, you know, the play calls
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: were for the Dolphins game. But I mean I'm wondering, like,
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: so we had Josh McDaniels was there for well like
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: fifteen plus years. We have all I mean, we have
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: records of all his play calls against all other teams
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: and even though like teams changed, the head coach might change,
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: or there's never the same players from year to year.
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: But I mean, we know, you know, a lot in
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: the poking out for the team, Like we know their tendencies.
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: We have a lot of ideas what plays work. So
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: I don't understand why it's like, oh, they don't they
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: don't have any creativity like how to call plays. I mean, again,
- 1:57:14Speaker 1: we have records of so many plays that Josh McDaniel's designed.
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: Why can't we use some of those? But they don't
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: have any confidence in the personnel or they don't don't
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: have any trust or or I mean, I mean I
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: don't know the answer. I honestly don't know the answer.
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: Thanks Jeff. I mean, it's not like they completely threw
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: away their playbook and started from scratch, right, I know. Yeah.
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: I think the biggest thing is is and I a
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: lot of people are talking about the play calling thing
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: all summer long, and I really didn't care who the
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: play caller was. My bigger issue was play design. Yes,
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: offensive innovation, play design and what I think the only
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: explanation that I can come up with. And I hate
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: taking shots, but the only explanation I can come up
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: with of why this offense looks so different from the
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels offense is that the Josh McDaniels offense is
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: so inter it and it's so detail oriented that they
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: didn't feel like they had to coaches to coach it.
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: It's the only thing that holds up because they didn't
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: feel like Matt Patricia and Joe Judge and the staff
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: that they had on offense was going to have the
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: ability to coach a option route heavy, very very sophisticated,
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: probably one of the most detail oriented offenses in any
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: level of football, and I don't think that they felt
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: like they had it in them to coach that up,
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: and so they simified it. I mean, it makes sense logically,
- 1:58:35Speaker 1: you know. I mean that's and I felt like a
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: change had to happen, and I don't know if they
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: made the best choice. I'm really thinking they didn't make
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: the best choice. But well, I mean, you know, you
- 1:58:42Speaker 1: hate to bring up twelve, but in his latter years
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: he was as much a coach as he was a
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: quarterback in that staying late and working with the receivers
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: on those option routes. And here's when I'm doing this.
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: Here's what I'm looking at. When you're covered this way,
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: I'm going to you to go inside or you know,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: and he worked. Mac can't do that yet. Yeah, he
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: can't do that. I hate when when you used to
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: do this all the time, but duce at one fifty
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: eight brings up. But you know, I think a change
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: had to happen. I could go for a half hour
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: and to ask why, Yeah, why did that? Why did
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: they have to take a scheme that was as successful
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: as any scheme in football for twenty years and change it?
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: There was nobody like I could understand that if Josh
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: Mrteniels was staying and you said, we got to make
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: some changes because Josh, there's no way we can get
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: these guys up to you a level. But if we're
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: all sort of learning the system together, why did it
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: have to change? Yeah? I don't know. I maybe you
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: know what we're seeing contradicts what I'm about to say.
- 1:59:37Speaker 1: But maybe they took to heart what I took to
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: heart last year is the Patriots are easy to defend,
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: and they're like, with Mac, we got to rebuild this
- 1:59:46Speaker 1: thing because we can't be easy to defend. And maybe
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: you know now you're looking at it, and if you
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: listen to Evan, they're only running a few handful of plays.
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: But I'm just glad I have validation now because Evan's here.
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: Now we can maybe take Maybe we're going to see
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: them build on that, and maybe they'll get to a
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: point where in their minds at least they're not easy
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: to defend anymore. But certainly that's not I. I'm going
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: to turn him into a childhood divorce. I think he's
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: going to be the subject of ridicule from me and
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: you the whole year. It's gonna be awesome. Oh well,
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: I don't know if you heard yesterday's show. My my
- 2:00:25Speaker 1: take coming out was well. Going into the season, I
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: was more worried about the defense and the offense. They
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: felt they had the pieces on offense to be good,
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: not great, but good. Yeah. Coming out of this game, however,
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: I felt more optimistic about the defense. I think overall,
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: they showed me some speed. They showed me the ability
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: to at least, you know, not have guys like Hill
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: and Waddle kill them. I think they did a pretty
- 2:00:49Speaker 1: good job. Like you said, Mixican watching and you and
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: we saw we saw their speed. I said, I think
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: it was good. The offense was the problem going in.
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: But I still believe they've got the pieces. But if
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: you they just have to put it together. But if
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: you phrased it yesterday like you just did today, I
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: would I would exactly what I said. You said you
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: felt the offense was just now. You said, I felt
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: like I came out. I thought the offense was the
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: bigger wholeheartedly, the defense said yesterday, defense played better than
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: the offense that yesterday. No, you said, the defense played well. Okay,
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: the defense wasn't a problem, you said. I said, you
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: want to tell me that they weren't a problem. I'm
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: going to disagree with that. You want to tell me
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: they weren't as bigger problem as the offense tell you both.
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: I mean, they only gave up thirteen points at them,
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: I know how many points they gave up. And everyone
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: explained to you that there were some fortune there. Okay,
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: there was some rather good fortune there, only allow thirteen
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: points and housides of the fact that the other team
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: had a three score lead the whole second half. It
- 2:01:43Speaker 1: helps when you're playing too. That was and half the
- 2:01:47Speaker 1: game in hand, the whole game. That was my biggest takeaway, like,
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: let's see what it looks like. I mean, And I
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: said yesterday too, I don't know what I am what
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: you just said. Just now, I'm one thousand percent in
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: agreement with you said. You said a different way, So
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: I'm optimistic. That's right. That's a perfect note down. We
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: went along today and who more to be optimistic than
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: than Peu. That's right, And we'll be back tomorrow with
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: more of it. We got picks and from tune into
- 2:02:12Speaker 1: fellgarn Mass later, speaking of lack of optimism, I think
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: I had probably the worst which ever, historic ever, historic
- 2:02:20Speaker 1: ineptitude on both sides. On your side, Yeah no, did I?
- 2:02:24Speaker 1: I guess the spread. I think I was a little
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: better than straight up well better a little bit good? Yeah,
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: good tease. We'll see you guys tomorrow. Thank you for
