Latest / The Slippery Slope / NSW Police actions to be scrutinised, but is the real problem a lack of leadership?
Transcript
- 0:12Alright, Jay Felon here. Thanks for listening to the
- 0:14Slippery Slope. So I've noticed a few headlines
- 0:17coming through again about police earlier on in the week
- 0:20and reading some of these headlines someone was a little
- 0:24bad news for police in general across Australia.
- 0:27But I realised something that Australia is in a fairly dire
- 0:32predicament when it comes to policing standards.
- 0:35This might opinion within Australia and I believe it all
- 0:40reverts back to poor leadership. We've had extremely poor
- 0:44leadership for probably the best part of a the best part of a
- 0:48decade now, but definitely since the, well, since just before the
- 0:53pandemic really took hold. And when what we saw during the
- 0:57pandemic is we we saw leadership failing to really lead the
- 1:02troops, what that were doing that would just that they would
- 1:07just bowing to political demands.
- 1:10We had bureaucrats coming in and calling the shots.
- 1:13And then we didn't have leadership.
- 1:15We didn't, we didn't have the hierarchy.
- 1:18And I'll speak specifically for QLD hierarchy supporting the
- 1:22troops on the ground, supporting the men and women who were
- 1:25trying to do the job that they're they're paid to do that
- 1:28they want to do, supporting their community.
- 1:31Instead, we had leadership come out and attack officers,
- 1:36attacked the people who they're supposed to support.
- 1:39And, and, and they really let down not just the policing
- 1:43community, but the community as a whole, you know, the the
- 1:49states where they're serving. And this is the problem.
- 1:51And then OK, I'll go through a few of these different headlines
- 1:55just to explain to you what I mean.
- 1:58This headline here revealed, it's from the Guardian says
- 2:01revealed Australian police accused of improperly accessing
- 2:05forced databases more than 2000 times.
- 2:11So basically saying Advocates say complaints about
- 2:14unauthorised access of police databases may be tip of the
- 2:17iceberg and the particularly worried about cases involving
- 2:21family violence. Friend noticed her son-in-law's
- 2:27behaviour was escalating. She says he was increasingly
- 2:30controlling of her daughters Sarah's life, monitoring her
- 2:33finances and being verbally abusive.
- 2:37The three were all living together and the situation felt
- 2:39particularly risky because he was a police officer.
- 2:42He had surveillance skills. Who the heck is this fella?
- 2:45Precious, actually, yeah, don't worry about that.
- 2:48He had some violent schools and access to information that
- 2:51seemed to give him a sense of power.
- 2:53And he held it over their heads. So, you know, I was reading this
- 2:57story anyway, and I thought, well, it's, it's crazy.
- 3:00That's how did we get this file with police feel that they are
- 3:06that they are able to access information was really should be
- 3:10out of their bounds. You know, we, we all know you're
- 3:12trained, you're, you're taught, it's drummed into you that you
- 3:16know, you can't be accessing personal information and yet
- 3:19people, you know, people will go after it, people will go and try
- 3:25and push the boundaries anyway, especially when you come for
- 3:27these, these issues, if you've got these issues with domestic
- 3:31violence surfacing. This next headline, police
- 3:34actions to be scrutinised after alleged domestic violence
- 3:38murder. Reading this the other day, I
- 3:40thought, wow, this is just a sad story.
- 3:42So critical Incident investigation has been launched
- 3:45to examine police's response to domestic violence incident in
- 3:48northern NSW overnight which a woman was alleged allegedly
- 3:53murdered. Maine has been charged with
- 3:55murder over the death of a woman, believed to be in her 40s
- 3:59at her home on Johnston St and Casino, southwest of Byron Bay.
- 4:03So I call with made a 000 after the incident, shortly after
- 4:08about the incident shortly after 1:30 AM.
- 4:11NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna PM
- 4:15has said. However, police did not
- 4:18acknowledge the call until 2:25. Wow then rushed to the scene to
- 4:25arrive at 2:27. They arrived to find the woman
- 4:28breathing but unconscious with obvious injuries to her head.
- 4:32Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated and she died at the
- 4:37scene, McKenna said. So a man, 31, was arrested at
- 4:43the scene and taken to Lismore police station.
- 4:45This man has been this afternoon has been charged with one count
- 4:48of murder. McKenna said the time frame in
- 4:50which police responded to the call that prompted the need for
- 4:53an independent investigation. The delay has given me enough
- 4:58concern that I have asked for an independent investigation,
- 5:01McKenna. McKenna has said.
- 5:04I was reading that thinking, well, I wonder what, I wonder
- 5:08what they're going to come up with.
- 5:09I wonder what the, you know, the, what they're going to say.
- 5:13Well, we've, we've discovered this, this is what we have
- 5:16learnt. And so this is how we, we can
- 5:18prevent this from happening again.
- 5:21I, I think, I think NSW hasn't started with international
- 5:26recruiting yet. So this is where I think they're
- 5:30heading now. There's other headlines getting
- 5:32around about NSW and they're they're starting to really pump
- 5:35themselves up saying how you know they're doing such a great
- 5:37job because their recruitment is going quite well.
- 5:41They've started rebuilding the Force.
- 5:44However, I'll bring up the next headline.
- 5:49You know, this hit on here says police recruitment surges as new
- 5:52programmes are introduced to encourage more people to join
- 5:55the NSW Police Force. So this is in May of 2024.
- 5:59And you know, it's all great news when you're reading, when
- 6:01you're reading down here, you think, wow, that's, that's
- 6:03really good news. It's good to see that they're
- 6:05rebuilding. However, you get a couple of
- 6:07paragraphs in and they say we are currently carrying more than
- 6:121500 vacancies, a legacy of the previous governments neglect and
- 6:19mismanagement of police recruitment and retention.
- 6:25So I'm sitting there going, well, OK, so it's, it's great
- 6:27that they're starting to rebuild, but they're still
- 6:30carrying 15115 hundred vacancies.
- 6:33That is huge, huge. But this is the problem that
- 6:38we've had for the last, like I said, the best part of a decade
- 6:41across Australia we have had poor leadership and they can
- 6:45blame previous government. Everyone likes to blame, blame
- 6:49the previous government. It's always the other followers
- 6:51fault, isn't it? When you get in power, it's
- 6:52always everyone else's fault, but as as we've seen here in
- 6:56Queensland, they can't blame the previous government.
- 6:58They've been in power for far too long.
- 7:00The, we can blame the previous government all we like.
- 7:04If you've got poor leadership in your ranks and you're not
- 7:06leading the team the way you're supposed to, you've got to look
- 7:09in the mirror and say, well, this may be just my fault.
- 7:12And if you're not willing to change, like I've said before,
- 7:14nothing will change if nothing changes.
- 7:17So we can't sit there and, and cry about how things aren't
- 7:21going right and how the, the, how the, how the, the rank and
- 7:24file keep leaving, how there's constantly a rotating door there
- 7:29if you're not willing to change the way you're doing things.
- 7:32But this is something that we've seen, well, it's permeating
- 7:36throughout the whole of the nation, throughout all of
- 7:38Australia. So we've got other headlines
- 7:40that have come up. You know, SA's got their multi
- 7:43$1,000,000 campaign goes overseas to boost police
- 7:47recruits amid staffing crisis that came out towards the end of
- 7:50the year. So SA's are doing that.
- 7:53Obviously Queensland, Queensland has started recruiting from
- 7:57overseas. This headline here, which came
- 8:01out on the ABC News, says police recruitment crisis is putting
- 8:05officers and the community at risk.
- 8:08This is in May of 2023. So this says the organisation
- 8:11representing police unions across the country says officers
- 8:14and the community will be at risk for recruitment crisis
- 8:17isn't addressed soon. We're in a crisis at this across
- 8:22the situation at this point in time, said Ian Leavers.
- 8:25He's the president of the Queensland Police Union and the
- 8:27Police Federation of Australia. He says it's a real challenge,
- 8:31not only recruiting but in the retention of police across
- 8:35Australia. And we are putting the police
- 8:36officers who are left at risk and we are putting the community
- 8:40at risk. So this is the issue, OK.
- 8:43It's been like he said, real challenge, not just recruiting
- 8:46but the retention rate. Obviously you come over here.
- 8:49Queensland Louis International Police talents under a new
- 8:52agreement and what else WI polices a new initiative could
- 8:58put overseas recruits on a pathway to citizenship.
- 9:02So I was reading these this story about, about that
- 9:07unfortunate well situation in NSW where domestic violence
- 9:11incident has turned into murder by the looks of it.
- 9:15And then you're reading about recruitment and, and what's
- 9:18happening with the recruitment in NSW and you realise there are
- 9:21still 1500 vacancies short of what they are, what they need
- 9:27within their ranks. And you realise we have got a
- 9:30major problem within Australia. We need police and we need good
- 9:35quality officers and just as importantly, we need good
- 9:42leadership within police. Like I said, we've had almost a
- 9:46decade, the best part of a decade now of poor leadership.
- 9:50And it was, look, just speaking, just from what I could see
- 9:57within Queensland Police where I was serving the leadership
- 10:01there, their idea of training a new leadership was training
- 10:06managers. They were next, never actually
- 10:09training leaders. Every now and then they would
- 10:14get leaders come through and natural born leader come up
- 10:17through the ranks. OK.
- 10:19And that's if they would allow them to actually go up the
- 10:22ranks. Because quite often the natural
- 10:25leaders, the good leaders are you will see their leaderships,
- 10:29leadership abilities are stifled.
- 10:32They are kept at the, the Sergeant, maybe senior Sergeant,
- 10:36but very often they're, they're kept at just the sergeants ranks
- 10:40and the people that are allowed to go up of the people that the
- 10:45politicians, the, the people that can write a good essay, the
- 10:49people that can talk about themselves, you know, really
- 10:52well. Quite often they're not, they're
- 10:54not great leaders. They can just talk about
- 10:57themselves really well. They can just write a good essay
- 11:00and they, they know management processes.
- 11:03And what I saw in Queensland police service was you had a lot
- 11:06of management, a lot of managers, but you didn't have
- 11:10many leaders. So we've had quite a few, quite
- 11:13a few years of all leadership, lack of leadership quality.
- 11:20And it this all just came to the forefront when the pandemic, the
- 11:25plan, sorry, the pandemic came about, this all came to the
- 11:30forefront. That's when we could really see,
- 11:32wow, managers aren't good when you're going into battle, when,
- 11:37when the, when the, when the crap hits the ground, when you
- 11:41really need people to step up and, and, and lead, you're,
- 11:46you're really in trouble if all you got is a group of managers
- 11:50and you've got no leaders in the ranks.
- 11:52And this is what happened. This is what I saw.
- 11:54This is what I believe happened within QPS.
- 11:56And this is what I think has been happening around the rest,
- 11:59the rest of the states around the country.
- 12:01So when I look at what's happening now with NSW, OK,
- 12:05they're starting to get back up on track, but they're still
- 12:08behind in recruitment. I think what they're going to
- 12:12be, what they'll soon announce, is, hey, we still can't attract
- 12:16enough people, so let's start recruiting from overseas.
- 12:21All of the state police services need to do a complete overhaul
- 12:27of their leadership teams. Complete overhaul and completely
- 12:32rethink the way they've been looking at their leadership
- 12:36teams for the last decade or possibly even longer. 2 decades.
- 12:41Get rid of the manages. Start helping the leaders and
- 12:46training leaders. You you have natural leaders,
- 12:50but you can still train. You can still teach leadership
- 12:54and stop placating to the politicians.
- 12:58We need strong men and strong women leading in the police
- 13:03services. And you know what?
- 13:05Woke ideologies will not save your country.
- 13:08Woke ideologies will not protect your countries, your country.
- 13:13Woke ideology will only bring about disaster for you and I.
- 13:18We need strong men and women, like I said, to lead our armed
- 13:23forces and to lead our police. Enough, enough of the demonic
- 13:32woke ideologies. That's my opinion.
- 13:37I'm Jake Fallon. Thanks for listening to The
- 13:39Slippery Slope. And save
