- 1:26Speaker 2: Everybody that's out here is doing it, and everybody's testing themselves, and it's great.
- 1:29Speaker 3: It's called America's Ultimate Challenge.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Each year, over 2,500 runners flock to Manitou Springs to challenge themselves against the mountain known as Pike's Peak.

- 2:52Speaker 1: All, right, now we're recording.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Cool, it's fine, I can always edit it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Does it better?
- 2:57Speaker 1: Well, yeah, thanks for coming on, yeah thanks for having me, do you prefer?
- 3:00Speaker 1: Jennifer Jenny.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Usually Jenny.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Jenny yeah.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Jen or Jenny.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And your last name is Yeaman.
- 3:05Speaker 4: Yeaman, yeaman.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Yeah, very nice.
- 3:08Speaker 1: What nationality is that.
- 3:10Speaker 4: I think it's technically German.
- 3:12Speaker 1: German Okay, yeah, makes sense.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you're legit.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Well, welcome to the pod.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Thank you, thanks for having me, I can't haven't bumped into you.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I know it's kind of crazy yeah, there's a lot of people here in this tiny little community.
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah, we've got a solid, solid contingent.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Yeah, we really do.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I feel like it's growing, though, for sure you know what?
- 3:32Speaker 1: I always talk shit because, like, I have to go up to boulder for everything.
- 3:33Speaker 1: I'm a sportive athlete, so I'm always in boulder and I'm like, what do you?
- 3:38Speaker 1: And don't get me wrong, a lot of people listen to the podcast that are boulderites and that's totally fine.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Love boulder, no shade.
- 3:43Speaker 1: But I do think colorado spring oh, I'll talk shit I.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I prefer our trails over boulder any day I feel the same.
- 3:50Speaker 1: All right, like the flat irons, I think, are dope, yeah, but I think, like our climbs are better, yeah, um, we can get into the alpine a little bit faster.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Pikes is right there.
- 3:59Speaker 1: We have a 14er in our backyard, that's right.
- 4:01Speaker 1: We, I think our 14ers closer.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, boulder people.
- 4:06Speaker 1: We're spoiled here.
- 4:09Speaker 1: So yeah, thanks for coming on.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Maybe introduce yourself, talk a little bit about your background, and we'll kind of go from there.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Well, my name's Jenny.
- 4:19Speaker 4: I am originally from California, so I moved here actually right about eight years ago.
- 4:25Speaker 4: My now husband and I we ran cross country and track together in college and then decided we wanted to move out here for the mountains.
- 4:34Speaker 4: So yeah, that's kind of where Colorado adventures began.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Where'd you go to school?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Just a small Division II school in the Bay Area.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Oh nice, yeah, that's pretty rad and your husband's a very like he's a stud of a runner as well um just a small division, two school in the bay area.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh nice, yeah, that's pretty rad and your, your husband's a very like.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He's a stud of a runner as well of a runner yeah, he's, he's kind of crazy.
- 4:50Speaker 1: He does like all the long stuff, but yeah, well, I think your, your schedule so far has been pretty crazy.
- 4:56Speaker 4: I mean, you've had quite we've had a lot of races this year I don't usually race this much, so it's been fun yeah yeah, who's?
- 5:02Speaker 1: you?
- 5:02Speaker 1: Who coaches you?
- 5:03Speaker 1: Um new, as of like two weeks ago, my friend mk sullivan, oh no shit, okay, I didn't know, I was just coaching myself yeah, I don't know if this is like a conflict of interest, because mk's got a sub sub ultra podcast as well, the only the only other sub ultra podcast.
- 5:20Speaker 1: She's fine, that's so cool.
- 5:22Speaker 1: She's well, she's a stud athlete.
- 5:24Speaker 4: Yeah, she's a phenomenal runner.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, big fan of hers.
- 5:27Speaker 1: Super cool.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I don't know why I always thought you were on the swap team.
- 5:31Speaker 4: I was like, not a swapper.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Similar.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I feel like I don't know.
- 5:34Speaker 1: There's a.
- 5:35Speaker 1: There's so many swappers.
- 5:36Speaker 1: In the Springs Even Mark Tatum ran for swap.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Oh, didn't know that.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like somehow, in some way someone's connected to swap yeah, yeah, no for sure.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Let me ask you guys when did you so?
- 5:48Speaker 1: What year did you move out to the springs?
- 5:49Speaker 1: How long you've been out here?
- 5:50Speaker 4: for um so 2016, okay, yeah, so august of 2016 oh, wow, yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So I don't want to do that math on public.
- 5:58Speaker 1: So I think yeah, eight years.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Wow in like a few days and you, uh, you've always been in the springs.
- 6:04Speaker 1: You haven't like bounced around.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Nope, only here.
- 6:06Speaker 1: That's how I feel like I'm gonna be, like we, we, when we first moved out here in, it was like 2020.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Um, it was like during the pandemic and don't hate me, people, I was, I was, I contributed to the problem now, but we moved out here during the pandemic and we were like, oh well, maybe this, you know, we'll see how we like it.
- 6:21Speaker 1: And then then maybe Durango or something like that.
- 6:23Speaker 1: And now I've been to Durango a bunch of times and I like the Springs 10 times more.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, we did like a giant road trip before moving out here and ideally we would love to live in like Uray or Buena Vista, but at the time it just wasn't possible because there's no jobs there right no jobs.
- 6:40Speaker 4: It's no jobs.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It's so expensive now it's crazy expensive kicking ourselves for not like buying a house when we first moved here.
- 6:48Speaker 4: But yeah, yeah, you know it's fine.
- 6:49Speaker 1: We love it here.
- 6:49Speaker 1: So yeah, springs is dope.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, can't hate on it, right?
- 6:52Speaker 1: Do me a favor, try to move that a little bit closer to you, can.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You can bend it too.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You're not gonna break it.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Okay, there you go better.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's perfect, that's perfect, I'm gonna audio.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Uh, I'm always funny with my audio.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I want to make sure it's good, uh.
- 7:04Speaker 1: So, yeah, you've been on an absolute tear this year.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You took first at kendall you just a couple weeks off of the up and over 10k race, yeah, which you're a back-to-back champion on.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Uh, you went top 10 at speed.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Go right, oh yeah that was rough we're gonna get into all these um, and now you're getting ready to tmr, and then um, I would imagine what the marathons probably they race for this year as well, yeah, yeah, yeah, I'd like to.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I did decent last year, but I'd like to improve upon it.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Fifth is pretty solid.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I would put you up now that I know the list and I was looking at the list.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I you know not to put you up there as as one of my favorites you'll be.
- 7:39Speaker 1: You'll be talked about in the in the episode Yeah's training been, how's it going?
- 7:45Speaker 4: good.
- 7:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been feeling like super strong, just loving training, which is always a good sign.
- 7:50Speaker 4: I feel like fair enough yeah cool.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So let's get into um.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I'd say first let's talk about kendall okay, just because like that's like one of my favorite races ever it was so fun I love silverton.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Is that your first time doing it too?
- 8:01Speaker 4: yeah, doing the the actual race race.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Yeah, okay.
- 8:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it was challenging for sure, but it was super fun.
- 8:07Speaker 1: That downhill sucks.
- 8:09Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, I was very sore afterwards.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I feel like it's it's not even necessarily the downhill, it's when you hit the road back into town.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh, did you see my video of finishing?
- 8:19Speaker 4: I literally collapsed because hitting that like flat road, my legs were like nope.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Concrete, so brutal yeah.
- 8:27Speaker 4: I could not stand.
- 8:28Speaker 4: At the finish I was like I'm dead.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, what a sweet ride and like the I don't know the whole like idea of like running up a 13er, especially on a road, and then, coming down and just like such a fast race.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Are you a better climber or descender?
- 8:41Speaker 4: You know, before this year I thought I was a better climber, but I've been having really good descents so I don't know.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I feel like I'm the opposite man.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I can't get my descents going to save my life.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know what happened this year, but like Kendall, I think, at the summit I was in like third or fourth, okay, and then I just I don't know, I ran fast, I guess, yeah, yeah.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that segment.
- 9:03Speaker 1: What is it?
- 9:03Speaker 1: It's called smoke that ass.
- 9:06Speaker 4: That's like one of my favorites.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's.
- 9:08Speaker 1: I mean.
- 9:09Speaker 1: There's so much lore around that race too that I don't know.
- 9:12Speaker 1: I think if I'm in Colorado next year which I might not be I might be in Alaska.
- 9:16Speaker 1: We'll see what happens, but I will definitely try to race it again.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I feel like that one and up and over are like two.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I put it on my tentative schedule every year only to have never like.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I've gotten a kendall, obviously, but I've never, never been able to get yeah, well, and silverton's so hard to get to, so it's like you have to really plan for it.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I feel like I almost messaged britney to get in this year.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I was like so, so I came.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I was so pissed, um, I raced cirque brighton a few weeks before had a terrible race, dog shit, and I was like I wanted to jump into something really quick and I'm like, well, we were actually out in a ray like a week ahead of time because we got married.
- 9:53Speaker 1: The congrats.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Oh, thank you thank you.
- 9:55Speaker 1: We got married in silverton and I was like we were here.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I was like in a ray and rose was like do you want to go watch the race?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Do you want to go cheer people on?
- 10:01Speaker 1: I was like I kind of want to go get a bib and go see what I can do.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Uh, it just never darn next year yeah, one of these days, for sure, for sure.
- 10:09Speaker 1: Um so, yeah, anything to talk about on like on the candle, you want to like unpack your little race a little bit, or?
- 10:16Speaker 4: um, it felt really good the first, like two and a half three miles, and then it was a grind and a suffer fest, and then that last little bit is steep yeah, it is um, and then it was just.
- 10:30Speaker 4: You know, don't fall down the finish, okay yeah, no face plants.
- 10:34Speaker 1: No face plants.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Pick a line.
- 10:36Speaker 1: It's funny, when I was, uh, I ran up the road, we went, um, we just happened to be in silverton like a couple days before the wedding and I went and like ran a little bit of the route just because I had been on it a while and like there's a lot more rocks than I remember it was really technical.
- 10:49Speaker 4: That's what.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I was thinking the whole way down I was like just don't fall, just don't fall.
- 10:52Speaker 4: And then I saw Dean Abel after the race and I think he ate it pretty hard, did he really yeah?
- 11:05Speaker 1: Oh, man, sub six down that road like that's gotta hurt.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I unfortunately knock on wood like haven't done.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Watch I go do that this weekend.
- 11:08Speaker 4: I should do that too, oh man.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, so well, congrats on kendall.
- 11:11Speaker 1: What, what a sick race.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I?
- 11:13Speaker 1: I really want to.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I think um, because we did kendall preview episodes.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I think the audience knows a lot about kendall.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But one race I really want to talk about is up and over um, just because it's like, in my opinion, it's like such a hidden gem it is yeah and like the new, especially like the new mexico running scene is pretty legit yeah, they have some crushers down there.
- 11:32Speaker 4: It's, and it's so beautiful and taos is such a random area like.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Have you ever been down?
- 11:38Speaker 4: there, no, no you like turn left, like you're going to what is that?
- 11:43Speaker 4: Like san luis or some random town in colorado, and there's like some mountains, but like not really.
- 11:49Speaker 4: And then you make a turn for taos and it's just like giant mountains and you're just like, oh wow, there's like a whole ski resort here and then even like the part you're in, you see the ski run, ski, everything like where, where all the runs are and stuff.
- 12:04Speaker 4: But there's a whole entire backside too with like tons of runs.
- 12:08Speaker 4: So it's just a really unique area, super red and it's high up, isn't it like?
- 12:12Speaker 4: the high point of the race like almost 13k yeah, I don't remember what we got to, but yeah, it's got to be up there.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I mean wheeler peak is around there and that's 13 something, so yeah would you say now?
- 12:23Speaker 1: I know last year was the usatf 10k champs for new mexico, this year wasn't.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Would you say it was a little bit less comp this year, or was it pretty, pretty stout um?
- 12:36Speaker 4: I guess similar.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I think last year was a smidge more competitive, but not I.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They're pretty equal, yeah, yeah that's cool that like it's consistent, because I see a lot of races that'll um kind of maybe like fall off the next year or previous years if they don't have that same level.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Like not everybody will go out there, but that's cool that they still put on yeah, I think they could make it a lot more competitive, but people just don't know about it yeah, yeah it's such a, like you said, a hidden gem hidden gem, and I think the other thing too, is that it's like like for me I don't know I, I, you know, I hope, if julian listens to this, if you know I, I would hope this may see it like become like a circ series race.
- 13:13Speaker 1: If they were to buy it or something because, or like I don't know for them to expand upon it or something, just because I like the fact that it's like its own weekend.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Um, they have a secondary race.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That's like verts.
- 13:24Speaker 1: It's like verts, vertical is what it's called right, yeah, yeah which is just like a what a 1600 foot ski hill.
- 13:28Speaker 4: You just race up yeah, it's like 0.7 miles or something and yeah like 1500, 1600 feet of vert, nice, yeah, oh we're gonna get into both of them.
- 13:38Speaker 1: We're gonna.
- 13:38Speaker 1: We're gonna chat about both.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Let's talk about the 10k.
- 13:41Speaker 1: I know the course is what it's about 10k distance like a little over six.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's like 6.3, maybe With just south of 3,000 feet.
- 13:49Speaker 4: Mm-hmm Yep.
- 13:50Speaker 1: What do you?
- 13:50Speaker 1: What's the most memorable part?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Is it mostly ski road?
- 13:53Speaker 1: Is it single track, Like what's it about?
- 14:06Speaker 4: So this year it was all ski road, which was, or, yeah, ski road, which was the original course.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Last year they diverted us to some single track.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Um, so this year, was like a lot faster.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Um, very steep, kind of like Kendall, but less Rocky.
- 14:13Speaker 4: Um, but yeah, it's fast, the downhill is fast.
- 14:15Speaker 4: This first descent is like super steep.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I should have looked at the grade, but it's really steep.
- 14:20Speaker 4: But you just, you know, fall downhill.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Yeah, hold on for dear life, yeah.
- 14:25Speaker 4: But yeah, it's, it's beautiful and it's like I said, it's fast.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, super rad.
- 14:31Speaker 1: And then the next day is the Verts Vertical it's a Sunday race?
- 14:34Speaker 4: Yep, and that's just like do you, do you use poles?
- 14:44Speaker 4: Do you use poles?
- 14:45Speaker 4: No, but Daniel and I and I, just I never use poles.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Like, do you use poles ever?
- 14:50Speaker 4: No.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Yeah, like we tried to use them.
- 14:53Speaker 4: Saturday we went for like an evening run and I thought I was going to stab hikers off the trail, so I was like I probably shouldn't use these in the race, but I think they would have been helpful like jeff kuno.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Yeah, he's like a master pole man really.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Oh wow, he's like a, like a.
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that's crazy, yeah so if I were to do it again, I'd probably use poles wow, okay, good to know.
- 15:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I.
- 15:15Speaker 1: It's funny like recently I've gotten the poles out for one run, yeah, one run.
- 15:19Speaker 1: This summer in estes I ran up what was it, twin sisters and it was just because I was coming off covid and was like really tired and it's like well, let's see maybe you know it gives me a little boost.
- 15:30Speaker 1: and I found, like I don't know the operation of like using my arms all right.
- 15:34Speaker 1: So I did some research into this, actually because I've been, I was, I've been, so who did?
- 15:38Speaker 1: I talk to someone recently and I was so curious as to why?
- 15:42Speaker 1: Um, not just mountaineers but Nordic skiers are so fit and apparently your VO2 max is you probably know this already Apparently, it's significantly higher if you're using upper body muscles a lot more as well.
- 15:55Speaker 1: In addition, like your aerobic and VO2 can get like significantly like better, which I didn't know.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So I was like all right, maybe in the off season I'll start playing with poles a little bit more.
- 16:05Speaker 4: Yeah, seriously, that's.
- 16:07Speaker 4: That's interesting.
- 16:08Speaker 4: Well, I'm going to try to use them at TMR, so I'll let you know if they're helpful.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Yeah, we're going to chat about that?
- 16:12Speaker 1: What's you're running the 24 mile?
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I have so many friends in this race.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah, keep a lookout for Brad Barrett.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Runs for Octarex, local springs guy too.
- 16:21Speaker 1: Oh really yeah see, we have such a good community and everybody's like siloed everyone has their own, like little groups, yeah yeah, now there's uh, I think it's tate, I can't remember.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I there's.
- 16:32Speaker 1: There's a bunch of people, it's gonna be.
- 16:34Speaker 1: It's gonna be a deep.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Oh, you got ryan becker.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Good luck with that oh gosh yeah well, you know the men's field.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I feel, feel bad, whoever has to race it looks tough.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a great course have you, have you ever?
- 16:45Speaker 1: I've never been to telluride, so oh really, yeah, oh, it's so cool yeah, I'm excited I've raced the 13 mile course backwards.
- 16:52Speaker 1: I never like raced the official race, but I have run that side of the course and it's absolutely gorgeous, nice, a little slightly terrified.
- 16:59Speaker 4: It looks like some steep cliffs it's just a long race.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But the good news is, like I I don't know especially for the marathon, I feel like it's a good.
- 17:07Speaker 1: That's a great high altitude training stimulus.
- 17:10Speaker 1: Yeah, probably a lot longer than like the marathon, maybe not, I don't know, I don't know.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it's way more technical than Pike, so I would imagine it's going to be a significantly longer race.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I assume it will be yeah yeah, I don't know Like, I feel like, uh, let's get into, like how your build is going for the marathon, like what your plans are for that.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Yeah, so, like I said, I just started working with MK Um, so typically just like one or two long runs a week, which is the best part of the week.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Um did a really long run this past weekend and that was fun.
- 17:49Speaker 4: Have you ever been to Alma gray?
- 17:50Speaker 4: No, I've been wanting to did Alma gray and rosa in the same run that was fun, yeah, um, but yeah going good doing a workout here and there and then is that basically how the week structured?
- 18:02Speaker 1: you've got one or two long runs, you've got one or two workouts, one workout usually one usually one, and then like, what is it like hour run to our run a day.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Do you go by time?
- 18:11Speaker 4: or 90 minutes or so.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yeah, usually more time than miles.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah, this is interesting, it's something I've been trying to get more into is more because I've been coached by Eli and Tabor and a lot of it was mileage before and like we're slowly transitioning and I think time.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And I've noticed as I've gotten.
- 18:32Speaker 4: I, I feel like I've gotten fitter since I started transitioning to the side.
- 18:33Speaker 4: Yeah, it's new for me too, usually while I was just coaching myself.
- 18:34Speaker 4: But it was, yeah, just aiming for miles versus time, and I almost feel like it's it's like harder to hit the time than the miles.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:41Speaker 4: Cause you're just like.
- 18:41Speaker 4: So I don't know.
- 18:43Speaker 1: I I my watch like constantly, like oh, am I going, whereas, like, if it's time, like I don't know, I just I don't know.
- 19:01Speaker 1: I feel like I'll take more time to like actually finish it out, as opposed to, oh, if I nail a 10k and X amount of time and then like I'll yeah, I don't know.
- 19:10Speaker 1: It's like for me like actually worked better with time.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Or like the OCD of finishing the mile.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I'm like nope, I've hit my time, I can't finish the mile.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, dude, it's, yeah, it's.
- 19:22Speaker 1: Are you more of a like very cerebral, like look at your watch, type of person all the time?
- 19:27Speaker 4: It depends on what it is.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Yeah, for like a long run, no, but like for a workout, yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel that, I feel that.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Yeah, especially for the long runs, I feel like that's the hardest part is to like just go off a feel and just like what feels good in the day and just kind of you know what's easy versus moderate or ends like I don't care what pace we're going, so how?
- 19:50Speaker 1: is that for you?
- 19:50Speaker 1: So I'm.
- 19:51Speaker 1: I've just now this year gotten more into running with friends, but before that it was kind of like a lone, lone wolf and I kind of like I.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think both of them have their places.
- 20:02Speaker 1: Especially with dudes.
- 20:03Speaker 1: We try and kill each other yeah and I girls too, though.
- 20:06Speaker 1: Well, I was gonna ask you is like I know, and especially, you run with a lot of really good females.
- 20:10Speaker 1: How does that work?
- 20:13Speaker 4: Um, I think finding the right group of girls is good.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Like my, the people I run with most of the time, we know we're not trying to have a competition, so it's not a race, we're just trying to have fun and I think as long as you put that boundary up, then it's all good.
- 20:28Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah, boundary up, then it's all good.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That's cool, yeah, yeah, I was with dudes like we.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Yeah, not good, we go wild yeah, and I think like for me I come from like a college running background and it's just like mentally ingrained into my brain to like, oh must compete.
- 20:44Speaker 4: But I'm trying to get out of that are you uh?
- 20:47Speaker 1: are you a super competitive person?
- 20:50Speaker 4: Yeah, I would say so.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Yeah, that's fair yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I am too.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I am too.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I try to be better, yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 4: I try to rein it in, Like I don't want to ruin friendships over being competitive.
- 21:02Speaker 1: No, it's just that like, I mean even like the smallest thing, like I could be on a hike I was just talking about this with somebody could, like I could be on a hike and like rose rose is not very competitive like only with certain things, but she'll like enjoy her hike.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm like I can't let this fucking guy pass us like let's fucking yeah, like rose, we gotta move.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Like what are we doing here?
- 21:21Speaker 1: Can't you just enjoy your surroundings?
- 21:24Speaker 4: I'm like no, no, actually I can't yeah, uh, daniel and I are super competitive, like just together too.
- 21:31Speaker 4: So it's like good and bad, right, like pushing your partner, but also like okay, there's time to chill.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, how does that work?
- 21:38Speaker 1: Cause he's I mean, like we were talking about earlier like he's a great athlete as well.
- 21:41Speaker 1: Like what does that?
- 21:43Speaker 1: What does that like?
- 21:44Speaker 1: Do you guys get out?
- 21:45Speaker 1: Are you training together a lot, or?
- 21:48Speaker 4: During the week?
- 21:48Speaker 4: No, but like week weekends, he'll either join the girls group or he'll like join for part of it, and then you know, he's faster than us.
- 21:58Speaker 4: So he'll ditch us yeah, but if it's just me and him, he knows how to chill, I like that that's cool.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Yeah, we gotta get him on the pod as well.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I was almost gonna ask you like to be put to.
- 22:09Speaker 1: We put both of you on and see how this would work.
- 22:11Speaker 1: That would have been cool yeah.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Next time, next time we'll do it.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Um, no, super red.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that was really interesting, just because, like a lot of people, I don't know a lot of folks that, like husband wife duo are I would say like on the elite level athlete wise.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Um, usually it's like one or the other and the other you know, the other one always makes fun, like it's kind of a funny tandem.
- 22:32Speaker 4: Yeah, it's fun, but it's hard to plan, like races and stuff.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Like we did Quad Rock 50 mile to, not together, but like we both did it this year.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And like race planning and like crew planning, I was like we're never doing an ultra together ever again Like.
- 22:49Speaker 1: This was too stressful, yeah, so he ran it too.
- 22:50Speaker 1: So what did you have to like?
- 22:51Speaker 4: have the same people come out, just we like shared crew, so I was like okay, you're gonna crew danny at this one, and then you're gonna crew me over here, but then you're gonna switch and you're gonna crew danny over here, and so it's just it's why I hate ultras, because it's too many logistics.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Yeah, do you think um what do you prefer, the short stuff or long stuff?
- 23:10Speaker 4: um, so this was my first 50 mile in like seven years, so, uh, hard to say what spurred you to want to run quadra?
- 23:20Speaker 4: I love long runs.
- 23:22Speaker 4: So I don't know, I feel like at heart I'm probably better at like long distance stuff, just because I find it more like adventurous, I guess um Better, or like it more, because you're pretty good at the sub stuff as well.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Thanks, I don't know, it's just different.
- 23:37Speaker 4: I like both.
- 23:38Speaker 4: That's why I've sprinkled in a little of everything this summer.
- 23:42Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 23:42Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Do you think you would for next year?
- 23:44Speaker 1: Are you already starting to put together your plans?
- 23:46Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 23:47Speaker 4: I was just talking about this last night.
- 23:48Speaker 4: I I'm helping a friend at run rabbit this year and I'm like I feel like I'm going to get this bug to go do like something longer after doing that.
- 23:57Speaker 4: So I don't know, I need to like really think about it.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, I think the only.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I think they're a hundred mile races or like long races don't compel me, but long FKTs, oh yeah oh yeah like, like, if it's like an idyllic ridge line, like, for instance, like the sangra de cristo line oh yeah, that'd be like I would never run 100 miles, but like that just looks so cool yeah, um, it's like stuff like that, you know, yeah, that would be fun yeah, but I don't know, like I, I don't think I could ever.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I just love the, the setup of sub ultra so much like yes, it's super competitive, yeah, um, and like it hurts, but you hurt really bad for like.
- 24:33Speaker 1: And then, yeah, an hour or two and then you're done.
- 24:35Speaker 1: And you, but you start at like nine or ten am.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah, your whole day left.
- 24:39Speaker 1: So nice, just chill you know, this whole like.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I have a lot of friends that run and as you do as well, probably that run these like ridiculously, this ridiculous distances, and it's like I gotta pace you at two o'clock in the morning, yeah the hell is that?
- 24:52Speaker 4: I know, yeah, it's.
- 24:54Speaker 4: It's rough, even this tmr race like I'm not even the longest distance and it starts at 5 30 that's terrible I was like what what are you guys doing?
- 25:02Speaker 1: are you gonna camp out before?
- 25:03Speaker 1: You are gonna camp yeah, dude, I was looking at because I many years, like I said, I've considered this race and I've, like, looked at airbnbs and it's like yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Tell your rides too, bougie for me.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll see.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Yeah, but 5.00 AM for races bananas.
- 25:18Speaker 1: I think it's because last year I think it was like the 40 mile or got like called because of weather halfway through.
- 25:24Speaker 4: Yeah, oh interesting.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Yeah, daniel's doing the 40 mile, so we'll see if he gets called for weather.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I can't wait to hear race reports.
- 25:31Speaker 1: I want to hear all about this Cause.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I guess that these courses are dope.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Yeah, it looks amazing.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Have you ever met Meg cook?
- 25:37Speaker 1: She's in Boulder.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I just had her on the podcast.
- 25:40Speaker 1: She's also like a ski mountaineer and and but like a great mountain runner, um and she won the 13 this year.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So, yeah, it's kind of cool to see all these, all these folks, friends of the podcast, to kind of like disperse and, yeah, go do their stuff.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Yeah, there's so many good races.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to dive a little bit more into, uh, into pikes, want to dissect this a little bit more.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I know we talked about some long runs, um, and now that you're working with mk, we talked a little bit about that.
- 26:05Speaker 1: But I kind of want to dive maybe deeper into like your plans and like what your goals are for this year yeah, um goal is I would love to be like top three, okay, um, maybe even top two.
- 26:18Speaker 4: I guess I'll put that into the world.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Okay, um, and I definitely think sub five hours is an achievable goal, because I think I ran like 503, yeah, last year I don't even know yeah, even if you get the right weather.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I mean that's automatically a bump.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, so those are like the main goals and then not eat shit, that's a good goal, that's fair um, yeah, I guess those are the main ones what's your, what's your favorite part of that course?
- 26:45Speaker 4: The finish.
- 26:46Speaker 4: No, I'm just kidding that's fair.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Um, I don't mind the ascent portion of it after you get past, like the w's.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I just hate the w's after that's just a good grind yeah, the w's are so fast like I feel like I mean dude, like last year watching like eli joe and like christian dude, they were running like seven, eight minute pace off the w's, I was like what the hell?
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, I see.
- 27:15Speaker 1: My least favorite is once you get past bar camp and you hit those switchbacks below Like A-frame.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that part is rough on the down just because it's so technical.
- 27:23Speaker 1: Yeah, do you run that part, or are you hiking or like what are you?
- 27:26Speaker 4: doing with that part.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I'm trying to think last year I think I did a like a good combo yeah, it's so like.
- 27:34Speaker 1: That's like I don't know if it's altitude, I don't know what it is, but I literally like every time I've run it in practice, like I've always died there yeah, that's a rough spot.
- 27:39Speaker 4: You just gotta perfect your granny shuffle.
- 27:41Speaker 1: That's like the key yeah, yeah, I feel like you have to keep the heart rate low enough to yeah, whereas, like you could probably like, like, once you're, like you said, once you're off the w's, it's an easy, it's a relatively easy grade till just before bar bar camp exactly, yeah, yeah yeah, that descent sucks also yeah, it's really rough.
- 28:03Speaker 4: Uh.
- 28:03Speaker 4: So this will be my third year doing it.
- 28:06Speaker 4: The first year I had a terrible year.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Like I felt so sick at the, probably by like a frame.
- 28:12Speaker 4: I was like this is awful, I'm gonna dnf at the top like fuck this.
- 28:17Speaker 4: And then I got to the top and I was like it's gonna take just as long to ride the shuttle down, like I might as well just keep going.
- 28:23Speaker 4: And it's amazing, like the moment you get to the top and you start going downhill, you do feel better.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but it is a long downhill it's a long down, but I feel like that mental shift too.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, have you been doing like three, two ones at all yet?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Oh no, I don't do that.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Oh no, really no.
- 28:39Speaker 4: I don't like bar trail.
- 28:41Speaker 4: That's like my least favorite trail in the Springs, so-.
- 28:43Speaker 4: Fair enough.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I, you know it's of like so it's so busy or um, I don't know.
- 28:53Speaker 4: I just, it's just not my favorite, I don't know it's not my favorite either, if you get up high like have you ever been from elk park?
- 28:58Speaker 4: Yeah, and like connected to bar and like that sort of thing, like that's fine, but just like doing the w's and stuff, there's too many people, it's too crowded, it's so boring.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I don't like the w's.
- 29:08Speaker 4: So dude.
- 29:09Speaker 1: I went saturday this past saturday at like 6 am and I'm like, oh, there's not gonna be any people, because I really love the route.
- 29:16Speaker 1: I shouldn't even say this on the podcast.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I love going up the incline and then dropping off long's ranch road because it's perfect for the search series you're gonna get yourself like almost 3 000 feet of vertical there.
- 29:26Speaker 1: And so you, because you want to beat up those quads and dude, I had to get off the incline cause I literally just like felt so bad because I just like kind of hung in the left and I must've passed like 200 people and I was like on your left, on your left, on your left, and finally I just jumped off on the W's and just ran up that cause there was like not as many people.
- 29:46Speaker 1: So I'm like all right, but yeah, this time of the year is bananas.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, but yeah, this time of the year is bananas.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I haven't.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I can't tell you.
- 29:56Speaker 1: The last time I did the incline, because it's just, it's always so crowded, yeah, and you know what in the fall, I think like back to the fall is when I started getting into it, because I used to hate it.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I used to think like, oh, the incline doesn't mean shit, like it's not an indicator of like fitness or strength and this, that and the other.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But once I started doing consistently, I found like my, my hiking and my uphill cadence.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Oh yeah, got significantly better.
- 30:14Speaker 4: I could see that.
- 30:15Speaker 4: Yeah, so yeah, I should probably get on it sometime soon.
- 30:18Speaker 1: But it's always fun to like.
- 30:19Speaker 4: I always like keep, keep trying to improve, yeah, and then you plateau well, it's one of those things I feel like you can't improve unless you do it a lot yeah, no, 100, and it's so specific as well, like nothing in the world it has like stairs, like that.
- 30:33Speaker 1: No, you know.
- 30:34Speaker 1: So I don't know.
- 30:35Speaker 1: I, um, I thought it would help me get a better blodget time because I've been trying to take the crown off and off of joe for like oh yeah, five years now, it's tough absolutely impossible.
- 30:45Speaker 4: That's my favorite peak that's a good one, yeah yeah, you run up blodget, huh uh, hike, yeah, it's definitely not a run, but Do you run up Blodgett?
- 30:52Speaker 1: huh, not often Hike up.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Blodgett.
- 30:53Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely not a run, but I haven't done Blodgett in a while.
- 30:56Speaker 1: But that's a good one.
- 30:57Speaker 1: I was going to ask you like what your favorite?
- 30:59Speaker 1: Do you do a lot?
- 31:00Speaker 1: Do you like try and Cheyenne Canyon a bunch?
- 31:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I think the Canyon is probably my favorite.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yeah, compare canyon, cheyenne, canyon, that area, yeah, yeah.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Every time I have john aziz coming on soon, I feel like every time I've like bumped into him.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It's always in the canyon.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It's like where everybody goes.
- 31:16Speaker 4: It's the cool kid place such good trails and you can go back like so far, like rosa, alma, gray, all that yeah, some high country stuff.
- 31:23Speaker 1: I used to do that.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Kenya, I think it's kenya yeah, that's a great one yeah, because you can get up relatively high over like yeah, it, yeah, and it's a good steep climb.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is steep.
- 31:31Speaker 1: Yeah, I've really been wanting to go and get to Almagre.
- 31:34Speaker 1: How do you say it?
- 31:35Speaker 1: I don't know if I say it correctly Almagre or Almagre.
- 31:37Speaker 1: I say it.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Almagre, I've heard it, almagre, I've heard all the things I have.
- 31:49Speaker 4: No, not no, just the one.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Oh, wow, and it's like a road almost up there isn't it yeah.
- 31:54Speaker 1: Which is kind of cool.
- 31:54Speaker 1: It's very specific.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a brutal road.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:58Speaker 4: It's a good climb, fair enough yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Do you take the?
- 32:03Speaker 1: Sorry I have so many questions.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Yeah, Do you take, like I said, yeah so you do well, you could take seven bridges to Pipeline.
- 32:10Speaker 1: Yep.
- 32:11Speaker 4: Or you could go like St Mary's to.
- 32:14Speaker 4: I don't know what that connects to exactly, but either way.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, we tried doing it in like May.
- 32:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, too much snow, a lot of snow, yeah, I did Rosa in May and it was rough.
- 32:28Speaker 4: Do you train like year round, like running, or do you do anything else?
- 32:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I would like to get into skiing more, but every year we're like, oh, we'll buy some skis this year, and then winter goes by and we're like, okay, next year.
- 32:40Speaker 1: It's the same exact thing I do.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Finally, I met a good buddy that is literally on the Arcteryx ski mountaineering group.
- 32:48Speaker 1: That's his shtick besides mountain running.
- 32:51Speaker 1: So I'm like, dude, you're going to teach me, I'm going to buy skis and this is how it's going to go, but I still don't know how to ski.
- 32:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I went for the first time last year and it was really fun, but also terrifying.
- 33:04Speaker 4: I'm like I don't want to tear my ACL.
- 33:06Speaker 1: That's the thing.
- 33:06Speaker 1: It's the knees.
- 33:07Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, terrified of the knees I.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I think snowshoeing might be more my thing.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Yeah, I would love to do like you know, uphill skiing, but then, you know, just gradually cruise down.
- 33:19Speaker 1: I don't need to be a speed demon or anything fair enough, fair enough now, I feel feel very similar.
- 33:24Speaker 1: So, speed demon, do you?
- 33:28Speaker 1: So you're originally from like california.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I'm just so curious as like.
- 33:32Speaker 1: So you ran cross country and did you track and field as well, or like, how did you find trail running?
- 33:40Speaker 4: um, so where we went to school was in monterey, california I don't know if you know california very well, but it's by the ocean but there's also where we practice were these like amazing trails and so we would run there like daily.
- 33:55Speaker 4: So we were already kind of trail running, but it was more focused towards like cross country and stuff.
- 34:01Speaker 4: And then Daniel discovered his love for like true trail running because he's a big Anton fan so he I can see that with the long blonde hair.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Yes, exactly.
- 34:13Speaker 4: That's where that started.
- 34:15Speaker 4: So he actually ran his first 100K when we lived out there and then that just kind of spiraled and then we realized we love mountains and we wanted to come to Colorado, so-.
- 34:26Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 34:26Speaker 1: So like what was Now we do lots of trail running.
- 34:28Speaker 1: What was your first race then?
- 34:30Speaker 4: I did a 50 K in.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Uh, technically it was in Santa Cruz, california.
- 34:35Speaker 4: Um, I think it was called skyline to the sea, so it was like a point to point like net downhill, but yeah that was really fun.
- 34:42Speaker 4: That was so cool yeah.
- 34:43Speaker 1: And then after that, it was just like game over yeah.
- 34:46Speaker 1: Well, I feel like it's such a good thing.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I felt similar, so I ran, I ran, I um did soccer competitively all the way up up until college and then didn't do much, and I don't know.
- 34:57Speaker 1: It's just like such a better competitive outlet, like when school's over and you have nothing else to do.
- 35:03Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying right yeah, that's super cool.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Um, yeah, I don't know like, like it's, it's, it's crazy, what like?
- 35:11Speaker 1: So you continue to do it?
- 35:13Speaker 1: Um, sorry, I'm like got all screwed up in my ideas and questions.
- 35:17Speaker 1: I was gonna ask you, um, like, what are your goals for the sport?
- 35:19Speaker 1: Like, what do you want to do with that?
- 35:21Speaker 4: Um, this is cheesy, but I've made my new goal to just have fun, really, cause I feel like I was stressing so much before to try to be like I don't know, try to get a sponsorship, try to do this, try to do that, and it wasn't working, so why am I beating myself up over it?
- 35:36Speaker 4: Might as well, just have fun, and you know, I think it's worked out in my favor.
- 35:40Speaker 4: I like that, yeah.
- 35:41Speaker 4: And I've been doing a lot better and racing a lot better and, yeah, interesting.
- 35:49Speaker 1: But I mean, of course I want to be as best as possible.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Yeah, is a sponsorship something you still think?
- 35:52Speaker 4: about, or I mean it would be nice, but I don't know if I'm anywhere near that level.
- 35:56Speaker 4: I would say you are definitely what kind of shoes do you run in?
- 36:01Speaker 4: Some Hoka's, mafate's, hoka's?
- 36:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:06Speaker 1: You like, really you brace like Mafate, like even for-.
- 36:09Speaker 4: Yeah, they're amazing Really, I've never tried them before.
- 36:11Speaker 1: I'm like I was, before I started running for Sportiva, a tecton snob.
- 36:14Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, yeah a big tecton guy.
- 36:16Speaker 4: This is my first summer trying them and I'm obsessed with them.
- 36:20Speaker 4: Yeah, they're great.
- 36:21Speaker 1: While they work.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Yeah, obviously, you've done pretty well with them.
- 36:33Speaker 1: All companies.
- 36:33Speaker 1: Are you into my new obsession, john g?
- 36:34Speaker 1: If you know anyone with john g, hook it up.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Shout out to kayla rosemary, she's the athlete manager.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, I've been telling everyone to buy john g.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'm like, come on, I was who was I talking to somebody on the podcast?
- 36:41Speaker 1: Sorry I've I'm blanked out.
- 36:43Speaker 1: I've been up for a long time.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Uh, no, but like I, I was just speaking to someone on the podcast the other day about john g and like I'd say, like that's my new favorite apparel company.
- 36:51Speaker 4: Yeah, they're amazing.
- 36:52Speaker 4: I've been telling literally everyone like you have to try John G, they're so good.
- 36:56Speaker 1: They're men's shorts, I mean, and they're, they're men's tights, like they're half tights, are insane.
- 37:00Speaker 4: I haven't tried anything that I don't like.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and the fact that, like, uh, it's funny, know, I'm just always curious to have conversations with interesting people.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yeah, right, and they just had this new partnership with Meryl oh yeah, I saw that and I had Mercedes on and she was talking about it a little bit.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And it's just interesting because, like last year, they partnered with Sportiva.
- 37:21Speaker 1: They came out with this dope shoe fast forward another year and they keep doing these collaborations, which is pretty cool yeah, yeah.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Their stuff is unique and they're starting to catch on.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I think big time they've got a bunch of cool athletes.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Yeah, seems like it, yeah john, she's legit yeah, I dig it yeah so I'm gonna press you on this one more time.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Um, we were talking about like next year races.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Um, what are some like goal races you want to do?
- 37:46Speaker 1: Is there anything like bucket list that you maybe put on that?
- 37:50Speaker 4: um, I don't know, I haven't thought that far in advance like mount marathon or anything like that I would love to do mount marathon but I hear it's hard to get in possible yeah um, I thought about doing never summer 100k this year, so I might put it on the list for next year, but okay, that's not like a huge, huge race.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Well, it's a long race, but it's not like a super well-known race dude, I'd love to see sorry, I called you dude I'd love to see you do like this, like some cirque series races.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Yeah, did you ever like?
- 38:20Speaker 1: I've done one I did the a basin one that one doesn't count yeah that was not the same as what I feel like the rest of them are so hard yeah um, you know this, I'm going out to alta this and then I'll be at Grand Targhee the following weekend and like those courses are just so iconic.
- 38:35Speaker 1: I went like this past weekend.
- 38:38Speaker 1: A-basin puts on these like little trail series races, so I just wanted to get like a little stimulus above 11,000 feet and I actually like raced some of the like A and like that's kind of the same thing I was left with.
- 38:52Speaker 1: It's like it's beautiful.
- 38:54Speaker 4: It is.
- 38:55Speaker 1: But it's so fast.
- 38:56Speaker 4: It's just Jeep road.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's not.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 39:00Speaker 4: Yeah, so the is it the Brighton?
- 39:04Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the one I raced this year.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Okay.
- 39:06Speaker 4: Was that the one that was the week before Speed Goat?
- 39:08Speaker 4: Yeah, that one looks fun but also kind of terrifying.
- 39:17Speaker 4: Did you hear someone like got super injured?
- 39:19Speaker 1: Unfortunately.
- 39:19Speaker 1: So yeah, young men fell.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Super sad and got really yeah.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Yeah, they had like.
- 39:24Speaker 1: See, I don't know what happened.
- 39:26Speaker 1: I kind of played around on that course, but you raced that course because you did speed go, yeah or a lot of it, I don't know like so and this is nothing against cirque series.
- 39:37Speaker 1: I think they put on absolutely insane races and hope to have julian at some point soon.
- 39:39Speaker 1: But um, like, for instance, like there were sections when I checked out the speed go or the um snowbird course and when I ran the brighton course, there were a couple sections where I was like holy shit, if you fall on this, like you get seriously injured.
- 39:50Speaker 1: So I, I and I wasn't expecting that.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Like I'm used to colorado races where, yes, it's high altitude but a lot of them are fast jeep roads like kendall or something like that.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Um, yeah, this is, brighton was like the most technical race I think I've ever run besides like something on the east which is fun but also a little sketchy sketchy.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I wore the completely the wrong shoes so like I was like sliding out of my shoes the whole time and you could just never find the right footing.
- 40:14Speaker 1: Um and a lot of it wasn't even a trail Like, it was just like rocks on a clearing and just like speed.
- 40:21Speaker 1: So that's where I was getting to.
- 40:24Speaker 1: So let's let's talk speed, cause, like dude, a top 10 finish at speed, yo man is bananas, congratulations.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Thanks congratulations, thanks.
- 40:36Speaker 1: That was.
- 40:36Speaker 1: That was the hardest race I've ever ran.
- 40:37Speaker 1: It's so long.
- 40:37Speaker 1: What did?
- 40:37Speaker 1: 11 400?
- 40:38Speaker 4: feet, feel like on the quads.
- 40:39Speaker 4: Um, you know, surprisingly I wasn't too sore, like afterwards, it was just like mentally daunting, like carl is mean, like you would think.
- 40:49Speaker 4: You were like almost to hidden peak, which is like the last peak, and he was like, nope, you're gonna descend 1500 feet and go back up this way.
- 40:57Speaker 4: And then you descend hidden peak and you're like, okay, I'm on the final downhill.
- 41:00Speaker 4: It's just like x amount of miles to the finish.
- 41:03Speaker 4: And he's like, nope, you're gonna go straight back up this for another thousand foot climb and it's just brutal was.
- 41:10Speaker 1: So, like I said, I've checked out some of the snowbird cirque course but and I know it's significant it's like light version of of the snowbird course, uh, or the cirques of the speed go course.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Sorry, um, what is it like?
- 41:24Speaker 1: Is it a lot of jeep road and single track or like what was it?
- 41:27Speaker 1: Because I didn't ever see the back of it.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a good mix.
- 41:30Speaker 4: The back of it is like terrible creek bed, like rocky, like break your ankles for five miles, and then it's like jeep road and then you climb this like I think it was literally a 50 grade, like not even on a trail, and then, yeah, it was literally everything wow, and the fact that, like david sinclair, ran under five hours.
- 41:52Speaker 4: That was insane mind-blowing really good.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, kids a freak, yeah, um, let's talk about your race.
- 41:59Speaker 1: That's what I want to learn more about, like did you check the course out before?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Did you go totally blind?
- 42:05Speaker 4: well, I knew kind of the course, but I don't know, I don't look into that stuff very much, because it'll just psych me out okay, well, going into it.
- 42:14Speaker 1: did you like I don't know I'm a psycho about specificity, like I, I have to have, like, if I'm like, for instance, like this upcoming week I've got a 1200 foot descent off about baldy and like less than a mile, and I'm like I know I gotta go run off of um blodgett to kind of mimic that, are you that kind of person to like mimic?
- 42:36Speaker 4: Sometimes I this summer has been weird because we've been racing so much.
- 42:39Speaker 4: So we did like Quad Rock in May and I was super specific for my training for that and then had about six weeks give or take before Kendall and then Speed Goat.
- 42:50Speaker 4: So I already had my base in.
- 42:52Speaker 4: So I was like I'm not really worried about my endurance so I just tried to get up high as much as possible because you know speed goats pretty high elevation, um but typically just get a lot of vert.
- 43:03Speaker 4: That's the main goal.
- 43:06Speaker 1: I like it.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Yeah, were you averaging like 10 to 15 K a week or more than that, probably within those ranges.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Yeah, nice nice yeah, so pre-race, like what'd you do for nutrition like I want?
- 43:17Speaker 4: to hear all about this, like what um pizza for dinner?
- 43:19Speaker 4: I think actually now I can't remember probably pizza that sounds right yeah, um the morning of bagel peanut butter classic.
- 43:29Speaker 4: Try not to vomit it up.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I feel, feel that pain.
- 43:34Speaker 4: Um, and then the race plan.
- 43:35Speaker 4: Uh, so I'm friends with MK and Tom, her husband, and I.
- 43:40Speaker 4: My goal was just to you know, try to stay with MK as long as possible, cause she's a great runner.
- 43:46Speaker 4: Um, that quickly faded, so that's fine, um, but then it was just, you know, hang on for dear life and just climb or run as much of the climbs as you can.
- 43:57Speaker 1: What did you do for like nutrition in the race?
- 43:59Speaker 1: Did you do like?
- 44:00Speaker 1: Um a hundred grams per hour.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:02Speaker 4: I tried to aim for like 60 to 90.
- 44:05Speaker 4: I so Daniel's brother and his mom were crewing us at the top of hidden peak and I had an extra bottle there with um like high carb drink mix, and I totally left it there.
- 44:17Speaker 4: So that was good fueling, good job, nice one.
- 44:20Speaker 4: But yeah, I tried to aim for like 60 ish carbs an hour.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Yeah wow, and were you mostly gels or?
- 44:29Speaker 4: um, since I left my bottle, yeah, mostly gels usually do like never second gels and then some sis.
- 44:36Speaker 1: Yeah, never seconds got great gels.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Then, martin, I just tried out the Martin gels.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 44:40Speaker 1: And they're pretty solid, not bad, I'm not a fan.
- 44:43Speaker 4: No, really the consistency is different.
- 44:46Speaker 4: It's like a, not a fan, Uh yeah.
- 44:49Speaker 1: So the races I do are so short?
- 44:51Speaker 1: Yeah, so the races I do are so short.
- 44:54Speaker 1: So, like for me, I like I don't know, like I only have like one gel before and like not fueled during the race, but when I do do like 27Ks and 30K races, I'm just curious as to what other people do.
- 45:01Speaker 1: So I'm kind of picking.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Yeah, I try to do like one gel every 40 minutes.
- 45:07Speaker 4: Give or take, so nice yeah that's solid.
- 45:10Speaker 1: What did you like?
- 45:11Speaker 1: Did you have a lot of low points in?
- 45:15Speaker 4: this race.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Oh yeah, 100%.
- 45:17Speaker 4: I felt really good the first, like probably 10 or 11 miles, and then we went down that rocky creek bed that I said you break your ankles on and that was just like terrible.
- 45:28Speaker 4: And then it was just a grueling backside climb.
- 45:32Speaker 4: You were just roasting in the heat.
- 45:32Speaker 4: That was a.
- 45:33Speaker 4: You were just roasting in the heat.
- 45:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:34Speaker 4: That was a real big low.
- 45:35Speaker 4: I think I like hiked most of that, unfortunately.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Yeah, the Wasatch is beautiful though.
- 45:42Speaker 1: It is I mean like the backdrops of that are just absolutely insane.
- 45:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I would love to just go explore and not be in a race setting.
- 45:47Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:49Speaker 1: I feel the same way.
- 45:49Speaker 1: Sorry, the same way.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Sorry, my dog, my dog's attacking another dog.
- 45:58Speaker 1: Um, yeah, I feel the same way because like I'm, for instance, like I go up this week, I leave on wednesday, and like I'm like looking at all these sweet routes, I'm like texting people, I'm like, hey, you want to go for a run?
- 46:04Speaker 1: I'm like I shouldn't do this, but you know, I kind of want to see the course too, and I don't know.
- 46:10Speaker 4: yeah, I know, there's just not enough time to explore everything.
- 46:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel the same way, yeah, Especially with like races.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Like you travel out to a place to race and it's like I want to explore, but also I want to taper and not like screw my race plan up.
- 46:23Speaker 4: So it's kind of difficult balance yeah.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Yeah, did you explore San Juan's at all when you guys were out there for Kendall?
- 46:28Speaker 4: Yeah, little bit.
- 46:29Speaker 4: Um, you know, everything goes up in the san juan, so you're trying not to do too much, but we ended up climbing like 3 000 feet the day before and we were like, well, oh well, we made it to a lake, so that was cool which one did you do um?
- 46:41Speaker 4: I have no idea it was off columbine, or was it one of the?
- 46:47Speaker 4: I think it was called like boulder gulch.
- 46:49Speaker 4: I want to say oh, I don't know I think that's what it was called.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Okay, that was the trail, at least nice yeah, we did.
- 46:55Speaker 1: We made the mistake of doing.
- 46:56Speaker 1: We did like a double and the second run of the day.
- 47:00Speaker 1: I did a double and my second run of the day was with her and we did columbine lake and I was, I was, I was dead.
- 47:07Speaker 1: It was horrible.
- 47:08Speaker 1: I was like I saw a moose and I wanted to just offer myself up to the moose.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Kill me now.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Right, it's so steep, but you can't not explore in the San Juan.
- 47:16Speaker 1: I feel like yeah, it's so beautiful and just such an epic.
- 47:19Speaker 1: It's so unique and different to anything we have in the state.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 47:25Speaker 4: I wish I could live there.
- 47:26Speaker 1: I feel the same way.
- 47:27Speaker 1: Yeah, when you said Ouray, we walked around because we stayed there a little bit before our wedding and we were like, oh dude, this is the spot, it's beautiful.
- 47:36Speaker 4: Yeah, have you been to Lake City?
- 47:37Speaker 4: I have not actually, oh we went there this summer, and that's a new favorite too.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Really cool, oh yeah.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Didn't Daniel run San Juan?
- 47:45Speaker 4: Solces yeah, yeah, I heard that's a great race, it's beautiful.
- 47:49Speaker 1: The San Juans are dope.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Oh, and you got Unca Padres right there.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah, such a big range.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I did a race last year like an impromptu race out of Creed, oh yeah, and that's a neat little mining town as well.
- 48:01Speaker 1: I've heard that's beautiful too, yeah and the South San Juans and there's a lot going on there.
- 48:05Speaker 1: It's definitely it kind of kills me to see like Cause it's not like a secret at all you can't find camping like ever no no, oh, not even just.
- 48:17Speaker 1: That is it's like, and if you want to do, if you want to stay somewhere, it's going to cost you a fortune, Like it's just, yeah, it's not great, Nope.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Um, when you were lived in California, did you do any exploring Like?
- 48:27Speaker 1: Did you do like any like?
- 48:39Speaker 4: like the not, I almost wanted to say mammoth, but what is the name of the range that's out there?
- 48:42Speaker 4: And the sierras, yeah, the high sierra, um, a little bit so, daniel's, from reno, okay, so, which is right next to like lake tahoe and, uh, they see the sierras.
- 48:46Speaker 4: So been a little bit up there, um, but when we lived in the bay area, have you ever been there?
- 48:48Speaker 4: No so the bay area running scene is really cool.
- 48:52Speaker 4: The maroon headlands and stuff kind of have like sea to sky trails, that's super cool.
- 48:57Speaker 1: It's really cool.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, I um have you done Broken Arrow yet.
- 49:01Speaker 1: No, oh, you're going to put that on the list.
- 49:03Speaker 4: I know that's.
- 49:03Speaker 4: I should have mentioned that.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Yeah, that's maybe on the list for next year.
- 49:07Speaker 1: A hundred percent and that's a great fitting race for you, like for you it's, and it's very easy, like christina's had a lot of success, a lot of people have had a lot of success out here.
- 49:15Speaker 4: Yeah it, it looks super fun.
- 49:17Speaker 1: Yeah there's also that marin.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think it's like there's a golden trail series marin headlands race yep, yeah, that's a good one, yeah that's, and it's like a new one for this year that they're doing this should be pretty exciting.
- 49:27Speaker 1: Those trails are awesome yeah sorry, my dogs are being super distracted.
- 49:33Speaker 1: All right, so we're almost.
- 49:34Speaker 1: We're at about 50 minutes.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Let's get into some of the.
- 49:37Speaker 1: We'll get into some questions, all right.
- 49:40Speaker 1: First one's pretty serious who inspires you?
- 49:46Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 49:47Speaker 4: I guess I don't know my friends that work hard running.
- 49:52Speaker 4: They inspire me to be better.
- 49:54Speaker 4: I like that.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Who is your mountain running goat?
- 50:00Speaker 1: Oh man.
- 50:02Speaker 4: Let's go sub-ultra.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Okay, I was just going to ask.
- 50:05Speaker 1: We can do male and female, if you want, or female, whatever is better.
- 50:08Speaker 4: I don't know, that's tough.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Do you follow the sport super close?
- 50:12Speaker 4: I follow it.
- 50:12Speaker 4: Yeah, Sub-ultra.
- 50:17Speaker 4: So that's tough.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Do you follow the sports super close?
- 50:18Speaker 4: I follow it.
- 50:18Speaker 4: Yeah, Um sub ultra.
- 50:18Speaker 4: I don't know if I have a favorite.
- 50:19Speaker 4: I think all the women in like the golden trail series are just like so bad.
- 50:24Speaker 4: They are so cool Like I wish I could be that fast and like just dominate mountains like that.
- 50:29Speaker 4: So I'd say anyone up there.
- 50:31Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 50:32Speaker 1: That's fair.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Did you follow a series and all at all this weekend?
- 50:34Speaker 4: yeah, a little bit dude, yeah crazy yeah, I, um, I just did.
- 50:38Speaker 1: I recorded, like a pre-recorded, a episode of like the sub stuff for tomorrow and it's just like a 30 minute rant on killian being the goat dude killian, he, what the hell.
- 50:48Speaker 4: What can't he do?
- 50:50Speaker 1: I I don't know I got watching the.
- 50:52Speaker 1: So like, if you watch from like two hours 40 minutes of the live stream for like five or ten minutes it's like him versus um philemon and like the final two miles and like what kelly, he just like jumped down seven switchbacks and like like, looked like a gazelle.
- 51:07Speaker 1: I've never seen anybody do that before my life and the sprint finish like oh my god, so bananas and like the fact that, like so I've I've been in, I can't say I raced philemon because like I saw philemon for like the first mile and a half and then philemon got like disappeared.
- 51:21Speaker 1: Philemon, I, I to me, I.
- 51:23Speaker 1: I thought patrick was a significantly better athlete and like that's no shade to philemon, he's still one of the best in the world.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I just felt like no one's catching patrick, um, but for philip mine to pull that rabbit out of his hat and like do that was mad impressive that was man.
- 51:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I should go back and like re-watch the live feed because it's crazy.
- 51:40Speaker 4: I only saw really the finish, but yeah, yeah, it's super crazy.
- 51:44Speaker 1: Highly recommend, definitely.
- 51:45Speaker 1: All right, let's get into some outer space questions, some wild ones.
- 51:49Speaker 1: I don't know if you how much you listen to the pod, but I like to throw some, some wild ones out there.
- 51:53Speaker 1: What'd you take on bigfoot?
- 51:55Speaker 4: bigfoot like does he exist?
- 51:59Speaker 1: does he exist, maybe?
- 52:00Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 52:01Speaker 4: I don't know I think he for sure exists.
- 52:03Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, uh, I don't know where, though probably, like I don't think he's in colorado no, I don't think so either.
- 52:10Speaker 4: It could be pnw, pnw, yeah, like washington, somewhere up there, maybe canada, you never know I could see that yeah, for sure exists what's your like, why?
- 52:20Speaker 1: why do you think that I'm just?
- 52:21Speaker 1: I'm so curious I don't know.
- 52:23Speaker 1: There's been so many like stories and like documentaries and stuff on it like I don't know I'm a believer and like I want to believe yeah and I also feel like a lot of like native people's stories, like and it's not just like one culture, it's like multiple cultures around the world.
- 52:40Speaker 1: They've got some like nine foot tall, hairy dude so.
- 52:43Speaker 4: So then it's like are there multiple or is there just one?
- 52:46Speaker 4: Who knows.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Is it a family?
- 52:48Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 52:49Speaker 1: That's a good question.
- 52:50Speaker 1: So, on that, what's your take on the aliens?
- 52:55Speaker 4: Ali knows, yeah, that's a good question.
- 52:56Speaker 4: So, on that, what's your take?
- 52:56Speaker 1: on the aliens aliens?
- 52:57Speaker 4: I for sure think there's aliens too, same.
- 52:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I don't know what exactly that means, but there's definitely some other life force out there stuff.
- 53:04Speaker 4: Yeah I, we'd be crazy to think like we're the only only thing like first, I don't know there's, how can we exist and nothing else exist?
- 53:12Speaker 1: you know I agree with that.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I, I don't.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Still it's hard for me, like my ape brain, to comprehend the whole space travel thing you know.
- 53:21Speaker 1: So, like maybe I don't know, part of me wants to think like maybe they're interdimensional maybe I don't know yeah yeah I don't know.
- 53:28Speaker 4: My brain hurts too much if I think too hard about it.
- 53:31Speaker 1: I love that stuff.
- 53:32Speaker 1: I'm always like what you know?
- 53:33Speaker 1: What's your take on ai?
- 53:37Speaker 4: oh, I don't like ai.
- 53:40Speaker 1: I think it's it's too much, it's creepy dude, I think like we're coming close to our like robot overlords.
- 53:47Speaker 1: It's not far away.
- 53:48Speaker 4: I don't know like even just general google search, ai stuff comes up everything dude.
- 53:53Speaker 4: And I'm like dude no.
- 53:54Speaker 1: Or like.
- 53:55Speaker 4: Instagram, you don't know what's real anymore.
- 53:57Speaker 1: No, you know, I just literally I sent my wife this photo of this girl because it was like on an Instagram thing and because everybody's talking about now, like there's these 100% AI generated photos, yeah, and my brother-in-law is still in the dating scene and I was like dude, is this real or not?
- 54:13Speaker 1: Like you, tell me, because he's on like Tinder and shit all the time and he goes no, it's fake.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I'm like how can you spot this?
- 54:19Speaker 1: He goes oh, I see similar things like this on Instagram or on Tinder all the time.
- 54:23Speaker 1: I was like whoa.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 54:25Speaker 1: I was like you got a good eye.
- 54:27Speaker 4: Can you imagine like looking at someone on Tinder and and then meeting them in real life and having it look nothing like that, completely different?
- 54:34Speaker 1: that's the.
- 54:34Speaker 1: That's the definition of catfish.
- 54:36Speaker 1: There you go, yeah.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I um, I don't know, I feel I feel bad for people.
- 54:39Speaker 1: I get a date these days I agree um, yeah, and on the ai topic, I think it's like for me the it's uh like I think it's a valuable tool for certain things like to maybe solve like medical issues and stuff like that.
- 54:55Speaker 1: Um, help us, I don't know figure out our way to meet the aliens, yeah, but like, how do we not skew the idea now that it's like that's going to be our robot overlords, because they're just going to let it take over everything?
- 55:07Speaker 4: that's, that's what happens when they take over.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Right then what?
- 55:10Speaker 1: I think it's more so the jobs too, like what do people want?
- 55:13Speaker 1: Like the ceo and the robot like what are we gonna do?
- 55:16Speaker 4: yeah, exactly I 100 agree.
- 55:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a little worried about that.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Uh, all right.
- 55:21Speaker 1: Last last question.
- 55:23Speaker 1: This one's a wild one, so prepare yourself.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Gosh, do you think we went to the moon?
- 55:27Speaker 4: oh, um, I'd like to think that we did, but also like why haven't we gone back?
- 55:35Speaker 4: That's the question I ask I mean, if we did it in, when did we go to the moon 1969?
- 55:43Speaker 1: like it is 2024 I don't know, I'm a skeptic, but I'm a skeptic about a lot of things.
- 55:51Speaker 1: So to me, I don't.
- 55:52Speaker 1: I don't think we did.
- 55:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I feel like at this point we should be able to go in our cars.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Yeah right, I was really hoping we'd have like flying cars by now.
- 56:01Speaker 4: Yeah, you know those cyber trucks.
- 56:02Speaker 1: They look like they might be able to fly it's funny one day I saw no cyber trucks and the next day I saw like I've seen so many in the past.
- 56:10Speaker 4: like week, I was parked next to one yesterday and I was like trying not to be nosy but I was trying to look inside of it and stuff.
- 56:16Speaker 4: I was like this is wild, it looks like nothing I've ever seen before Like that, compared to my car, I was like this is not the same.
- 56:25Speaker 1: And it's like apparently you can like shoot it and it's like bulletproof.
- 56:29Speaker 4: Oh I believe it.
- 56:30Speaker 4: It like bulletproof.
- 56:31Speaker 4: Oh I believe it.
- 56:31Speaker 1: It looks like it's a tank dirty the only thing I they have I feel like they haven't figured out yet is the like, the duration of time it lasts, like I feel like you're still going to be like very strategic with how far you can go yeah, I wouldn't trust it, but yeah, no, it's probably ai who knows dude it's gonna get us on that note.
- 56:50Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on.
