Sam: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're talking about Let Go Now by Karen Casey. Sophie, I have to ask, because this one hit me harder than I expected, is surrender actually something you can practice, or is it just a nice thing people say?
• 0:18
Sophie: Hey there Sam. It's a real practice, and that's exactly what makes this book different from the usual inspirational stuff. Karen Casey isn't telling us to give up. She's saying the grip itself is the problem. Every time we clench around a specific outcome, we hand our peace over to something we can't control.
• 0:38
Sam: Okay, that reframe I love, because when I hear the word surrender I immediately think failure. Like, I'm waving a white flag. But she's saying it's the opposite. It's actually the most active choice you can make.
• 0:51
Sophie: Right, and here's the mechanism underneath it. Our suffering doesn't come from events. It comes from our attachment to how those events are supposed to turn out. We want our partner to behave a certain way, our career to follow a certain arc, our kids to make choices we approve of. Then reality doesn't cooperate, and we feel angry and anxious.
• 1:14
Sam: And the desires themselves aren't the problem.
• 1:17
Sophie: Exactly. Desires are human. The trap is believing our happiness depends on them being fulfilled exactly as we imagined. That's the knot. We've tied our wellbeing to conditions we don't actually control.
• 1:31
Sam: So she starts with this idea that we are not in charge. And honestly, my first reaction was, that sounds bleak. But she flips it. If we're not in charge, then we're also not responsible for making everything work out perfectly.
• 1:45
Sophie: That's the liberating part. We're not required to have all the answers. Our job is to show up, do our best, and release the outcome. She's careful to say this isn't passive resignation. It's cooperating with reality instead of fighting it.
• 2:01
Sam: And that frees up so much energy, right? Because you stop pouring it into what you can't change and start putting it into your own attitude, your own response, your own willingness to just be present.
• 2:14
Sophie: Yes, and here's the part I think people miss. Letting go isn't a one-time event. It's moment by moment. You release your grip, and then you grab hold again. You feel peace for a minute, and then anxiety creeps back in. She says that's not failure. That's just being human.
• 2:33
Sam: Wait, that actually took pressure off me when I read it. Because I'd been treating it like a switch. Either I'm a surrendered person or I'm not. And she's saying no, it's a discipline, like meditation. The intervals of release just get longer over time.
• 2:49
Sophie: And the practice never ends. That's the point. Now she goes into specific areas where control causes the most damage. Relationships first. We walk in with unspoken expectations about how the other person should love us, and when they disappoint us, we try to change them.
• 3:08
Sam: Criticize, manipulate, withdraw, and demand. Yeah, I've done all four.
• 3:13
Sophie: Same. And Casey's challenge is direct. The only person you can actually change is yourself. So relationships shift from negotiation to acceptance. You can express a need without demanding it be met. You can set a boundary without needing the other person to approve of it.
• 3:31
Sam: That's genuinely hard though. Because expressing a need and then not needing the response feels like talking into a void.
• 3:39
Sophie: It does, at first. But she'd say that's the difference between loving someone and trying to manage them. Then she moves to the past, which is another place we grip. Old grievances, old regrets, conversations we replay in our heads, imagining what we should have said.
• 3:57
Sam: And we tell ourselves we're holding onto that stuff to protect ourselves from getting hurt again. But she says it's the opposite. Holding on is what keeps us trapped in the pain.
• 4:07
Sophie: And letting go of the past doesn't mean pretending it didn't happen. It means accepting that it's over, and that our continued suffering isn't protecting anyone. She talks about forgiveness not because the other person deserves it, but because we deserve peace.
• 4:23
Sam: Then there's the future, which is where I live most of the time. Worrying about what might happen, preparing for every contingency, imagining worst case scenarios and then living in fear of them.
• 4:36
Sophie: And her argument is that the future doesn't exist except in our minds. The only moment we ever actually have is this one. When we're worrying about tomorrow, we're missing today entirely.
• 4:48
Sam: Which sounds obvious, but then you sit with it and you realize how much of your life you've spent somewhere that isn't here.
• 4:55
Sophie: Right. Now, she does bring in a spiritual dimension, but she's careful about it. For people comfortable with faith, she talks about surrendering to a Higher Power. For people who aren't religious, she talks about surrendering to reality itself. The point isn't adopting a belief system. It's cultivating humility.
• 5:16
Sam: And then she gets really practical, which I appreciated. She names the specific patterns that keep us stuck in the illusion of control. Perfectionism is the big one. The perfectionist believes if they just get everything right, they'll be safe from criticism and failure and pain.
• 5:33
Sophie: But perfection is unattainable, so it's a form of control that can never succeed. It just produces endless self criticism and exhaustion. Then there's the need for approval. We shape our behavior and our opinions to win people over, and it's exhausting, because you can never control what anyone thinks of you.
• 5:53
Sam: Someone will always disapprove. Someone will always misunderstand.
• 5:58
Sophie: Always. So letting go there means finding your worth from inside instead of outside. It means being willing to be disliked and still knowing you're enough.
• 6:08
Sam: And there's the fixing and rescuing thing, which I felt personally attacked by. The instinct to solve everyone's problems, offer advice, step in and make it better. She says that's often control wearing a caring costume.
• 6:23
Sophie: Because when you fix someone, you're implicitly saying you know what's best for them. And you're carrying responsibility for their happiness, which was never yours to carry. She's especially direct about parents. True love doesn't control. True love releases.
• 6:39
Sam: So how do you actually start? Because that was my question the whole way through. Like, great, I'm convinced, now what do I do on a Tuesday afternoon?
• 6:47
Sophie: She says start small. Pick one area where you're gripping too tightly. Notice what it feels like in your body, the tension in your shoulders, the tightness in your chest. Then take a breath and soften. Imagine opening your hands.
• 7:03
Sam: And she's honest that the first time you try it, you might feel more anxious, not less. The ego doesn't like being released. It fights back.
• 7:12
Sophie: It does. But with repetition it gets easier. She also suggests prayer or affirmation, simple honest phrases like, I release the need to control this outcome. I trust that all is well. Not magic words, just reminders of what you actually believe.
• 7:30
Sam: And she brings in community, which I didn't expect. She says we're not meant to do this alone. Sharing it with a friend or a group or a therapist helps you see your patterns, and there's something about saying it out loud that loosens its hold.
• 7:44
Sophie: Naming the grip is part of releasing it. And underneath all of it is trust. Not trust that specific outcomes will go your way, but trust in your own resilience. Trust that you'll find a way to cope, and that you have inner resources you haven't discovered yet.
• 8:00
Sam: She also draws a line I thought was important. This isn't spiritual bypass. If you're in real danger, you act. Letting go is about releasing attachment to results, not abandoning responsibility.
• 8:14
Sophie: Yes, discernment matters. You can take action without being attached to how it lands. You can leave a harmful situation without knowing exactly what comes next. And then there's the shift she describes from trying to control life to cooperating with life. Life becomes a partner instead of an adversary.
• 8:34
Sam: And gratitude fits into that. Because gratitude shifts your attention to what's already present and already working. It's a form of letting go, since it acknowledges you already have enough.
• 8:47
Sophie: She doesn't promise life gets easy. She promises it gets more manageable, more peaceful, more meaningful. And that the hands that open receive more than the hands that clutch.
• 8:58
Sam: The thing I'm actually taking away is the moment by moment part. I kept waiting to become a person who's let go, and she's saying there's no arrival. You just keep noticing when you've clenched up, and you keep opening your hands again. That's the whole practice.
