- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat your podcast coming at you shirtless, severely,
- 0:13Speaker 1: folk bitten and in my case, underwear lessening podcast. You
- 0:18Speaker 1: can't predict anything. Okay, we're joined by a very special guest,
- 0:26Speaker 1: Bo Jackson. You're okay to hang out for a men
- 0:30Speaker 1: while we talked about some other stuff. Got sixty seconds,
- 0:33Speaker 1: you can you can weigh in on it. Um, that's
- 0:38Speaker 1: want to talk well one, I want to talk about
- 0:39Speaker 1: this that I feel so ashamed. I feel so ashamed
- 0:44Speaker 1: by something that just happened that I want. I want
- 0:46Speaker 1: the whole. I want everyone to know. I'm sitting here,
- 0:50Speaker 1: I'm in my home state, and as a guy who's
- 0:53Speaker 1: not from my home state, named guy named guy who
- 0:58Speaker 1: was was a once my time expert turkey hunter. Yeah, um,
- 1:08Speaker 1: retired expert turkey hunter guy is telling me about a
- 1:12Speaker 1: fish that he knows about right in like Michigan or
- 1:17Speaker 1: in one of the lakes, a fish he knows about.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I went so far as to say, there is
- 1:22Speaker 1: not a fish here that I don't know about, and
- 1:27Speaker 1: was adamant that the fish you were describing is a
- 1:32Speaker 1: fictitious fish, a legend. But it turns out I was
- 1:41Speaker 1: as u Arthur Fonds rally says that was rude, rue wrong,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and the fish does exist. And so I've wanted I
- 1:52Speaker 1: want to publicly apologize to you guys, public apology taking
- 1:57Speaker 1: the spotted guar, the spotted guard, which is like people
- 2:02Speaker 1: know a long nose guards, shorten nose gar, alligator gar.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I said, the only guar that's here is the long
- 2:11Speaker 1: nose guar. But there is a guard. It's way less
- 2:14Speaker 1: guard looking called guard, which you've heard folks describe as
- 2:18Speaker 1: a guardpike yard pike does exist. You were right. I
- 2:24Speaker 1: was wrong. Not technically I was wrong. I was just
- 2:28Speaker 1: as wrong as you were. Yeah, because you were arguing
- 2:30Speaker 1: about it too, and then you learned the truth. Then
- 2:32Speaker 1: I got proved raw ra and there I was, um
- 2:36Speaker 1: quick news story from Alaska's really interesting. It's just happened.
- 2:39Speaker 1: So three dudes, three mugs go out to Kodiak Island
- 2:46Speaker 1: hunt bears. Did I you tell you about this story?
- 2:50Speaker 1: They go out to Kodiak out. No, it's not. This
- 2:52Speaker 1: doesn't go where you think it's gonna go. The minute
- 2:54Speaker 1: I see that, I'm like, oh, someone got killed by
- 2:55Speaker 1: bear on Kodiak on but not. Three mugs go hunting
- 2:58Speaker 1: on Kodiak island and it rains, it is windy the
- 3:00Speaker 1: whole time. It's just this just happened. May. It's uh,
- 3:06Speaker 1: raining and windy. You know what they were hunting? Bears
- 3:12Speaker 1: just happened. What else did he be hunting? Hmmm? I
- 3:16Speaker 1: don't know if they had other seasons open this time
- 3:18Speaker 1: of year, like what other than gris Give me an example.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I don't know what else would they have opening. I
- 3:24Speaker 1: guess black bear, But they don't have any black bears
- 3:26Speaker 1: on Kodiac do you they know? And we still haven't
- 3:28Speaker 1: talked about bears. I just said bears SONO good suny grouse. Okay,
- 3:35Speaker 1: they could have been hunt I don't know if they
- 3:37Speaker 1: could have be hunting suity grouse. Uh. One of them
- 3:40Speaker 1: has a miserable time the whole time he's in the tent,
- 3:43Speaker 1: doesn't want to leave the tent and all he does
- 3:45Speaker 1: complain about the wind and the rain, and he wants
- 3:50Speaker 1: to leave a week early, and they called a float
- 3:53Speaker 1: plane to come pick him up with the plane can't
- 3:55Speaker 1: come because the weather, So they're waiting, waiting and waiting.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Eventually he gets in the huff and storms, grabs a
- 4:05Speaker 1: rifle and storms out of the tent and says, I'm
- 4:07Speaker 1: going home, so as he so like the guy, his
- 4:17Speaker 1: buddy is hunting buddy explains how this has happened before
- 4:21Speaker 1: and he'll just all of a sudden get mad and
- 4:22Speaker 1: get up and leave. And they don't take much of it,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and they take him hunting again. Yeah, they took him
- 4:27Speaker 1: hunting again. Apparently they don't think much of it. Eventually,
- 4:30Speaker 1: the plane comes to pick him up and there's just
- 4:33Speaker 1: two of the three now. They tell the pilot, well,
- 4:36Speaker 1: he wandered off. Um, no one's heard from him. So
- 4:41Speaker 1: one of the hunting buddies decides to go home after all.
- 4:45Speaker 1: He goes back home, and one of the guys decides, well,
- 4:48Speaker 1: now I'm gonna stay and look for my body. And
- 4:51Speaker 1: he spends six days have gone by. He even walks
- 4:57Speaker 1: to a nearby village to ask if they've seen the buddy.
- 5:01Speaker 1: They haven't seen him, and turns out that eventually finds
- 5:06Speaker 1: the guy dead a mile from the tent. They still
- 5:12Speaker 1: haven't done an autopsy on him. He's only a mile away,
- 5:15Speaker 1: mile away. Dead. He had he was young, though, they're
- 5:21Speaker 1: like postulating maybe he had a heart attack or his body.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Points out that this guy had a habit of eating
- 5:29Speaker 1: things he found to see if they were edible. And
- 5:33Speaker 1: in his pocket is a chunk or root where he
- 5:36Speaker 1: had carved off the outer layer of the root in
- 5:38Speaker 1: order to gnaw on it. But they don't know yet,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and he says his body. Of of the deceased says
- 5:48Speaker 1: some stuff I don't know and I won't put in
- 5:51Speaker 1: my mouth, and he'll caught a piece off and try it.
- 5:54Speaker 1: That's what he says of his body. What kind of
- 5:58Speaker 1: root was? It doesn't say yet. It's breaking news man
- 6:01Speaker 1: with the tune back in later. Any bear not not attacked,
- 6:06Speaker 1: not mauled, laying right next to his rifle, So it's
- 6:09Speaker 1: one of the two, heart attack or whatever. Who knows
- 6:15Speaker 1: they're gonna do an autopsy on the guy. That's a
- 6:18Speaker 1: cautionary tale, hunting cautionary tale. Moving on, U Bo Jackson.
- 6:24Speaker 1: You you've had all kinds of documentaries made about you. Yes,
- 6:28Speaker 1: I think I was watching one of these documentaries and
- 6:31Speaker 1: it was saying that when you were growing up you
- 6:36Speaker 1: developed an uh some proficiency with slingshots. Yeah, slingshot hunting,
- 6:43Speaker 1: is that true? Sling shot in homemade bow narrows? What
- 6:48Speaker 1: was your interest there? Something there? Keep busy yeah, stay
- 6:54Speaker 1: in trouble was this was this a rural where you did?
- 6:57Speaker 1: You go up in a rural location would income area
- 7:01Speaker 1: and you had like a bowload of siblings. I have
- 7:05Speaker 1: four brothers and five sisters and you guys grew up
- 7:09Speaker 1: We grew up the woods. No, we were in a
- 7:12Speaker 1: neighborhood similar to where we are now, but it's a
- 7:15Speaker 1: low income neighborhood. My mom worked too too odd jobs.
- 7:19Speaker 1: She she raised all ten kids by herself, God bless hers,
- 7:23Speaker 1: sol Um and um. The younger kids we had to
- 7:28Speaker 1: find something to do to occupy our time during the day.
- 7:32Speaker 1: And the older kids, my if I'm not mistaken, my
- 7:34Speaker 1: two oldest brothers one going off to the military. My
- 7:38Speaker 1: oldest sister was married next to the oldest brother was
- 7:41Speaker 1: in Chicago. So they're about seven kids around the house
- 7:45Speaker 1: at the time, and me being one of the youngest,
- 7:48Speaker 1: the eighth of ten. Um. The only thing we had
- 7:54Speaker 1: with a TV with three channels. There was no internet,
- 7:58Speaker 1: no anything, so we had to make our own fun.
- 8:00Speaker 1: So we go get them in or tube from a
- 8:03Speaker 1: tire from a car tire, cut it up, get some
- 8:07Speaker 1: nyline cord and make sling shots. Are we go out
- 8:10Speaker 1: and there woods. Finding a limb, skin it, bend it,
- 8:15Speaker 1: puts some knoyline cord around it, make a bow and arrow. Yeah,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you tell me how you were talking about how you
- 8:20Speaker 1: made those arrows? Were talking about that from ment? Well,
- 8:24Speaker 1: my cousin and I Jason, we were known in the
- 8:27Speaker 1: neighborhood as Frank and Jesse James Goes. We always stayed
- 8:30Speaker 1: in trouble Born the same year. We're about two months apart.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And um, we would go out and make these ball
- 8:37Speaker 1: and arrows. And we go out in the weeds and
- 8:39Speaker 1: find these little twigs that's about the size of a pencil,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and we would get them. We have to find the
- 8:45Speaker 1: straight ones and we get them. And we take bottle
- 8:47Speaker 1: caps from off of a Coca Cola. We had to
- 8:50Speaker 1: with the bottle opener, and we would take that, get
- 8:53Speaker 1: the hammer and bend that bottle cap around the tip
- 8:56Speaker 1: of that like folded over around and fold it over
- 8:58Speaker 1: because once you fold old fold that bottle cap up over,
- 9:02Speaker 1: you have a point on it. And we take a
- 9:06Speaker 1: chicken feather, split that twig down the back, stick that
- 9:10Speaker 1: chicken feather down, get thread and just wrap it and
- 9:14Speaker 1: tie it off and make arrows and we would hunt
- 9:17Speaker 1: my uncle's chickens. Esiually we got the crap beat out
- 9:23Speaker 1: of us. But my uncle had this one chicken that
- 9:26Speaker 1: had about tin feathers on it, a rooster named Red Skeleton,
- 9:30Speaker 1: and we couldn't kill that chicken. The chicken was named
- 9:33Speaker 1: Red Skeleton. We named the Red Skeleton. And this chicken
- 9:37Speaker 1: would get in this old rush pile that was bob
- 9:40Speaker 1: wire and old mattress springs and car tires and a
- 9:44Speaker 1: big jump pile, and he'd get in that jump pile
- 9:47Speaker 1: and we couldn't get him out. So we chased him
- 9:49Speaker 1: every Saturday, and he would beat us to that jump pile.
- 9:53Speaker 1: And we don't know whatever happened to Red Skeleton, but
- 9:55Speaker 1: one day he disappeared. Were you guys like when you
- 9:58Speaker 1: were when I when I was a kid, if you
- 10:00Speaker 1: went out and made a bowl, you might and this,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you know at the time, you would say that you're
- 10:07Speaker 1: going out to play Indians or you're gonna have to
- 10:09Speaker 1: play Daniel Boone. But what was like, what were you guys? Um?
- 10:14Speaker 1: Sort of were you doing a thing because it was
- 10:18Speaker 1: in reference to some you know, like reference to some
- 10:21Speaker 1: bygone lifestyle, Like what was your motivation? No, our motivation
- 10:28Speaker 1: was to kill ship period. That's all. We kill straight
- 10:32Speaker 1: cats in the neighborhood. Seriously. People would drive through the
- 10:39Speaker 1: neighborhood drop off straight cats, straight dogs, and you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: but we wouldn't kill the dogs. We we chased a
- 10:45Speaker 1: cat out. I almost cut my foot off one day
- 10:47Speaker 1: from chasing a cat because we because we were going
- 10:50Speaker 1: to torture it. Yeah, and um, well we were just
- 10:57Speaker 1: being young kids. We didn't know anybody. What was the uh,
- 11:00Speaker 1: what was the wh were you drawing from? You know
- 11:03Speaker 1: what I mean, like if you didn't know people that hunted, well,
- 11:06Speaker 1: let's just get to this, because that was a big
- 11:09Speaker 1: show on back there should be like playing outside. We
- 11:14Speaker 1: would be playing outside. We go across the street, climb
- 11:17Speaker 1: up in the tree and we got a big kudzuvian
- 11:19Speaker 1: at the bottom of the at the base of the tree,
- 11:22Speaker 1: and we get and dive out of that tree and
- 11:25Speaker 1: that cut in act like a big spring, hit the kudzu,
- 11:29Speaker 1: climb back up the tree and jump off again. We
- 11:31Speaker 1: made our own trampoline out of kudzuvian. So we we
- 11:37Speaker 1: literally made our own fund, big big. Because everybody in
- 11:42Speaker 1: the neighborhood was very low income, probably made less than
- 11:45Speaker 1: minimum ways and the money that your parents made from working.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You had to keep the lights on, keep what food
- 11:52Speaker 1: get by right on the table, and keep a roof overhead. Period. Yeah,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you talk about your mother a lot like being my
- 11:58Speaker 1: mother is the uh. My mother is a backbone of
- 12:04Speaker 1: not only me but all my siblings. And we lost
- 12:07Speaker 1: her too early at the age of sixty. So um, Yes,
- 12:12Speaker 1: whenever I talked, percent of the time, it's gonna be
- 12:15Speaker 1: about my mom. All my strength, all my courage, all
- 12:18Speaker 1: my knowledge come from her. But she was a hard lady.
- 12:20Speaker 1: She was a hard lady. And when I say hard lady,
- 12:23Speaker 1: she could whoop your butt worse than any man could.
- 12:28Speaker 1: So and being the eighth of ten kids, I got more,
- 12:33Speaker 1: not spankings, not but whippings. I got ass whippings with
- 12:37Speaker 1: an extension cord, a mining belt, whatever she could get
- 12:40Speaker 1: her hands on. And this was on a good week.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I would only get about four whippings. That was a
- 12:47Speaker 1: good week for me. Well, now that you have kids,
- 12:50Speaker 1: do you feel that you were getting whippings over things
- 12:52Speaker 1: that weren't warranted? No, it was warranted. Every time a
- 12:57Speaker 1: window got broken in the neighborhood. I did it every
- 13:01Speaker 1: time a kid got hit in the head with a brick,
- 13:04Speaker 1: I did it. Wind shield in the car. I did it. No,
- 13:09Speaker 1: I did it, that's just it. I did it. We
- 13:15Speaker 1: would have crab apple battles. And I'm not joking you
- 13:18Speaker 1: when I say this. It would be six kids against me,
- 13:23Speaker 1: and we go steal apples from my neighbor's tree. And
- 13:26Speaker 1: these are a little green, hard apples. They weren't ripe yet.
- 13:29Speaker 1: They were green and hard about beside the golf balls.
- 13:33Speaker 1: And I get twenty apples put in and put put
- 13:35Speaker 1: them in my shirt, and those guys get apples, and
- 13:38Speaker 1: they would always run out of apples because I got
- 13:40Speaker 1: six guys on apples at me, so I could pick
- 13:43Speaker 1: up their apples and throw them back at them, and
- 13:45Speaker 1: I would eventually run them all home. And the guys
- 13:48Speaker 1: thought that they were safe once they got on their
- 13:50Speaker 1: porch and got inside the house. Well, once the screen
- 13:53Speaker 1: door closed, two apples shot through the screen door in
- 13:56Speaker 1: the house, and they called my mom. She get my
- 14:00Speaker 1: brothers and sisters. She would tell my older brothers and sisters,
- 14:05Speaker 1: if you don't catch him and bring him home, you're
- 14:08Speaker 1: gonna take his butt whipping. And have you ever seen
- 14:12Speaker 1: on the TV show The Wild Dogs on in Africa,
- 14:16Speaker 1: where how they chase animals, the wild Dogs, how they
- 14:20Speaker 1: chase them in like and where there would be twenty
- 14:25Speaker 1: wild dogs and they'll send three out to chase his animal.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Then when those dogs get tired, three more fresh ones
- 14:31Speaker 1: get on them and they run that animal to death
- 14:34Speaker 1: and then they catch him in Well, that's that's how
- 14:36Speaker 1: my brothers and sisters did me. They would send two
- 14:39Speaker 1: siblings at me and they chased me around the bottom,
- 14:42Speaker 1: and when I passed back by the house, they would
- 14:44Speaker 1: peel off and two fresh siblings would chase me and
- 14:47Speaker 1: they dragged me home, and my mom would beat the
- 14:49Speaker 1: crap out of me in the yard. They most all
- 14:51Speaker 1: them track stars. At one point time we were the
- 14:54Speaker 1: neighborhood baseball and softball team, and then the seriously we
- 14:59Speaker 1: were we were, Hey, do be a favorite? Give um,
- 15:03Speaker 1: what's the quickest way to like everybody knows who you are,
- 15:07Speaker 1: but what's the quickest way to like sort of some
- 15:11Speaker 1: up your athletic career? God give him, no, no no, no,
- 15:16Speaker 1: give me like the you know what happened? You want
- 15:18Speaker 1: to playing professional football? Like in baseball. At the same time,
- 15:22Speaker 1: that whole thing, just kid, We got a lot of younger. Well,
- 15:26Speaker 1: put it to you like this. I was blessed to
- 15:28Speaker 1: be able to run like a spook deer and could
- 15:32Speaker 1: throw a rock like somebody shot it out of a cannon.
- 15:35Speaker 1: And I grew up doing that. And my mother wouldn't
- 15:40Speaker 1: let me play sports in junior high school because she
- 15:42Speaker 1: said I didn't make the grades. So I was a
- 15:45Speaker 1: knuckle head, wouldn't make the grades, wouldn't do anything in
- 15:47Speaker 1: junior high She wouldn't let you play. I didn't I.
- 15:50Speaker 1: I did not play football until I was in the
- 15:52Speaker 1: ninth grade. And I didn't play baseball. I think I
- 15:57Speaker 1: was in the eighth grade. So let me play baseball.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And from from their own the rest is history. But
- 16:02Speaker 1: she told me, if you don't make the grades, you
- 16:05Speaker 1: can't do nothing at the school. You're gonna bring your
- 16:06Speaker 1: butt home and work. You have to bring your butt
- 16:09Speaker 1: home and do this and do that. And I stopped
- 16:12Speaker 1: hanging with the crowd that I hung out with. And
- 16:15Speaker 1: because yeah, the grades you were getting, Like how bad
- 16:18Speaker 1: can people's grades in seventh and eighth grade? Put it
- 16:20Speaker 1: to you like this, If I gotta see, that's like
- 16:24Speaker 1: winning a lottery that's what's when I was being bad.
- 16:29Speaker 1: But most of my grades were these because I just
- 16:33Speaker 1: wouldn't put forth the effort. Not that I didn't know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I just wouldn't put forth the effort, just being just
- 16:38Speaker 1: being a knucklehead. I wanted to be one of one
- 16:41Speaker 1: of the cool kids, hang out with the cool kids,
- 16:44Speaker 1: and not do my homework, not do this, flunk all
- 16:48Speaker 1: my quizzes, and just do enough to get by, just
- 16:51Speaker 1: just to do enough to where I wouldn't have an
- 16:53Speaker 1: F on my report card. That was going too far. Yeah,
- 16:57Speaker 1: that was overextending myself. I had to save that energy
- 17:01Speaker 1: for mischievous stuff on the weekends. So my mom said, no,
- 17:06Speaker 1: you can't play period. She said until you improve your grades,
- 17:12Speaker 1: then I'll think about letting you play. And that's what
- 17:14Speaker 1: I did. And she's using all those for ten kids.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Ten kids out of ten kids. Nobody ever got sent
- 17:20Speaker 1: to jail. Nobody got in any serious trouble. We had
- 17:25Speaker 1: neighborhood fights with with with neighbors and relatives, but no
- 17:30Speaker 1: nobody got The first person that got in trouble serious
- 17:34Speaker 1: enough was You're one in on you. At thirteen, me
- 17:39Speaker 1: and my gang, Me and my gang of about twelve,
- 17:43Speaker 1: We were gonna walk across the mountain to swim in
- 17:47Speaker 1: an old strip pit mining pit because they were mind
- 17:50Speaker 1: based to mine iron ore around our town and they
- 17:52Speaker 1: had old pits full of water and we didn't know
- 17:55Speaker 1: what was in the bottle bottom. And tell people where
- 17:57Speaker 1: he grew up real quick, that's summer Alabama. That's between
- 18:00Speaker 1: Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Because you still haven't done a thing.
- 18:03Speaker 1: You need to do. Layout like like layout your your
- 18:07Speaker 1: professional career just super fast. You want the highest trophy,
- 18:10Speaker 1: one of the highestman trophy in called college. Um got
- 18:14Speaker 1: drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round
- 18:16Speaker 1: and I told him to go themselves because they screwed
- 18:19Speaker 1: me out of my senior baseball year. Because at that
- 18:23Speaker 1: time I was touted to be the first college player
- 18:26Speaker 1: picked in the baseball draft and the first player picked
- 18:28Speaker 1: in the football draft. So um, I got drafted by
- 18:34Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after I told him, don't draft
- 18:36Speaker 1: me in the first round in eighties six and I
- 18:41Speaker 1: turned them down and I had to sit out that
- 18:43Speaker 1: year in which the Kansas City Roles drafted me in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the supplementary baseball draft and they took me, and they
- 18:51Speaker 1: took me in the sixth round only because my college
- 18:54Speaker 1: coach was a picture for the Roles and the general
- 18:57Speaker 1: manager and the head scout who was him alive today
- 19:01Speaker 1: he is the oldest scout in the country names Art
- 19:04Speaker 1: Stewart lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin, who who scouted me and
- 19:12Speaker 1: they draft. He drafted me for the Roles and I
- 19:15Speaker 1: ended up with the Royals the year after that. After
- 19:18Speaker 1: my time inspired with the Tampa Bay Bucks, the Raiders
- 19:22Speaker 1: came calling. So start to play baseball during the summer,
- 19:27Speaker 1: football after baseball whenever baseball season was over. That was
- 19:31Speaker 1: the agreement I had with the l A Raiders at
- 19:34Speaker 1: that time. The Raiders were was in Los Angeles at
- 19:36Speaker 1: the time, and I did both for four years and
- 19:40Speaker 1: until I until I dislocated my hip my fourth year
- 19:44Speaker 1: with the Raiders and UH retired from that. Recovered from
- 19:50Speaker 1: hip replacement surgery well enough to where I came back
- 19:53Speaker 1: and played baseball and my first at bad I hit
- 19:56Speaker 1: a home run. This was I got trade it from
- 20:00Speaker 1: the Rolls to the White Sox. So hence that's where
- 20:05Speaker 1: I live now, you know it. I've been there for
- 20:06Speaker 1: almost thirty years. When you when you broke your hipper,
- 20:11Speaker 1: had your hip injury, Did you know that second to it? No? No, no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 20:19Speaker 1: it wasn't all of this and now this I looked
- 20:22Speaker 1: at that. I I'd say for about the first four
- 20:26Speaker 1: to forty eight hours. Yes, I was upset because I
- 20:28Speaker 1: got injured. Um. Then I got to the point where
- 20:33Speaker 1: I was afraid, not for me, but I was afraid
- 20:38Speaker 1: that I couldn't live the type of life that I
- 20:41Speaker 1: wanted with my kids because they were young and I
- 20:43Speaker 1: wanted to do things with my kids and so forth.
- 20:46Speaker 1: And so fortunate enough for me, the man upstairs allowed
- 20:50Speaker 1: me to rehab well enough to where I could live
- 20:52Speaker 1: a normal life with my kids and my family and
- 20:56Speaker 1: also come back and play baseball. So I did that.
- 21:00Speaker 1: I had played baseball on an articles you here for
- 21:02Speaker 1: about four years with the King to see the roles
- 21:04Speaker 1: in the California Angels. No, with the Chicago White Sox
- 21:07Speaker 1: and the California Angels. So my injury, everybody sit up
- 21:11Speaker 1: and say, man, I wish that you had never gotten hurt.
- 21:13Speaker 1: You could have been the best at this, best this.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I never got into professional sports to be the best
- 21:17Speaker 1: at anything. I never got in professional sports to make
- 21:20Speaker 1: it to the Hall of Fame. I was good enough
- 21:23Speaker 1: to make an All Star team. And Um, I never
- 21:27Speaker 1: said I got goals of being in the Hall of Fame.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Somebody just wanted to and the reason I played sports.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Somebody wanted to give me a truckload of money to
- 21:35Speaker 1: do something that I've been doing since I was a kid,
- 21:38Speaker 1: which just made it easy for me. Um, baseball football
- 21:43Speaker 1: was never the center of my universe. It was always
- 21:47Speaker 1: family business, then probably sports somewhere down the road. So
- 21:52Speaker 1: for me to to to end that chapter, to close
- 21:58Speaker 1: that book on sports was easy. So because I always
- 22:01Speaker 1: had something to fall back on. My four years at college,
- 22:04Speaker 1: I I got the best out of the four years,
- 22:08Speaker 1: meaning I had a full ride, first in my family
- 22:11Speaker 1: to ever go to Division one college or just college
- 22:14Speaker 1: superiod on a full scholarship. So I said, I'm gonna
- 22:18Speaker 1: take advantage of this because I've heard too many horror
- 22:20Speaker 1: stories about athletes going to college and in four years
- 22:24Speaker 1: they come out and they could barely spell their name.
- 22:26Speaker 1: But they're all star football players, all star baseball players,
- 22:29Speaker 1: and this and that, and they can't read on the
- 22:32Speaker 1: fifth grade level. And I didn't want to be one
- 22:35Speaker 1: of those, as they say, dumb jocks. UM and my
- 22:41Speaker 1: roommate and I we made a pack that we're gonna
- 22:43Speaker 1: get our assets up and go to class. If I
- 22:45Speaker 1: don't feel like going to class, you gotta make me
- 22:47Speaker 1: get up and go to class. If you don't feel
- 22:48Speaker 1: like going to class, I'm gonna make you get up
- 22:50Speaker 1: and go to class. The only reason that we're not
- 22:52Speaker 1: in class medical reasons. And we did that, and and
- 22:59Speaker 1: I did graduate in four years. When I left Auburn
- 23:04Speaker 1: after my senior year, I had six classes to compete
- 23:09Speaker 1: to complete after lettering in three sports in college. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: I put it off because this baseball football thing. And
- 23:17Speaker 1: when I went back was right before my mother passed.
- 23:20Speaker 1: She asked me, was I going to go back to college?
- 23:22Speaker 1: And I said, how old was I? How old was
- 23:28Speaker 1: I at the time where I got my hip? Um?
- 23:33Speaker 1: I think I was. I think I was twenty No, no, no, Um,
- 23:39Speaker 1: I lost my mother. I think I was twenty eight.
- 23:41Speaker 1: So you went back to college, you were, like, I
- 23:44Speaker 1: went back to I came out of college in five
- 23:47Speaker 1: I went back to college and finished so tas everybody else,
- 23:52Speaker 1: sitting in class like everybody else doing my homework. Um
- 23:56Speaker 1: was it was it hard for people to be to
- 23:58Speaker 1: focus on that because here's this dude like Boos, right,
- 24:01Speaker 1: I mean famous dude. There you are sitting in class.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Not really because everybody knew me and and I never
- 24:12Speaker 1: did anything to bring attention to myself. Um um, I
- 24:17Speaker 1: lived right there off of campus, and U, I just
- 24:22Speaker 1: go to class. Did you have to move down with
- 24:24Speaker 1: my family and everything? No, being from the state, I
- 24:26Speaker 1: had a house there that was my house during the
- 24:30Speaker 1: off season. So um so yes, I went back to
- 24:35Speaker 1: school and I finished because I promised my mother that
- 24:38Speaker 1: I would. And then she asked me, was I gonna
- 24:41Speaker 1: go back and play baseball? And I said, if I
- 24:43Speaker 1: do the first hit I get, it is gonna be
- 24:46Speaker 1: for you. And my first hit was a home run,
- 24:49Speaker 1: and I got that ball mounted in a case of
- 24:51Speaker 1: acrylic bolted to her addresser at home. Till this date,
- 24:54Speaker 1: that ball, that ball is on her. Yes, And um,
- 24:59Speaker 1: I lost my mother three weeks after I had hit
- 25:01Speaker 1: replacement surgery and ninety two April of ninety two, and
- 25:05Speaker 1: then uh, you went back and were invited back to
- 25:08Speaker 1: give the commencement address at Auburn. I was if I'm
- 25:11Speaker 1: not mistaken that second none um non faculty in the
- 25:18Speaker 1: history of the school to get the commencement at Allburg.
- 25:22Speaker 1: So I take probably more pride than that than my sports.
- 25:27Speaker 1: It's listed as one of the When I was looking
- 25:28Speaker 1: it up before, I wasn't aware of it is. Uh,
- 25:31Speaker 1: when I was looking up reading about it before talking
- 25:33Speaker 1: to you, how it's listened as sort of one of
- 25:35Speaker 1: the great it's one of the great commencement speeches of
- 25:38Speaker 1: all time. Well, a lot of people, a lot of
- 25:41Speaker 1: my friends said, and these are just buddies talking like
- 25:44Speaker 1: you sit around with your buddy, And they said, how
- 25:46Speaker 1: on the hill you get up there and you do
- 25:49Speaker 1: a commencement speech and you started worse than mail Tillers
- 25:53Speaker 1: because I heard it starting from my father, I and
- 25:56Speaker 1: two sisters. And uh. In college, I would not do
- 26:01Speaker 1: an interview after football game because I started, I get
- 26:06Speaker 1: stuck on a word, and uh, my sports information director said, Bo,
- 26:12Speaker 1: you're gonna have to start talking to the media because
- 26:14Speaker 1: if you don't, it doesn't matter if you run for
- 26:17Speaker 1: five yards on Saturday and they will praise you in
- 26:22Speaker 1: the paper on Sunday, But if you don't do interviews
- 26:27Speaker 1: with them, they are going to look at you in
- 26:28Speaker 1: a different light and think that you're cocky, and think
- 26:31Speaker 1: that your butthole and that's in that And on Monday
- 26:34Speaker 1: they can cut you down solo with their pin that
- 26:36Speaker 1: you have to stand on a step ladder to scratch
- 26:39Speaker 1: a snake's belly. Because that I don't want to talk
- 26:45Speaker 1: and and yes, so what I did was, um, I
- 26:52Speaker 1: interviewed myself every morning in the mirror around six o'clock
- 26:55Speaker 1: with my toothbrush and piss my roommate off because he
- 26:59Speaker 1: tried to get some sleep. And I'm in the bathroom
- 27:01Speaker 1: and I'm interviewing myself. I'm talking loud and and I'm stuttering,
- 27:05Speaker 1: and I'm stammering, and I'm trying to get to the
- 27:07Speaker 1: point where I'm relaxing enough to talk in front of
- 27:09Speaker 1: the media. And one thing that I learned with stutters,
- 27:14Speaker 1: I have been asked to during the during the during
- 27:17Speaker 1: the Stutters Association Board, be chairman of the Stutters Association Board.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I have a lot of things going on. I would
- 27:23Speaker 1: love to do something with them, but right now, I
- 27:25Speaker 1: got too much on my plate. But the thing that
- 27:27Speaker 1: I learned is that stuttering is like swimming. When you're
- 27:33Speaker 1: go in the water, you have to hold your breath,
- 27:35Speaker 1: and before you hold your breath, you gotta feel your
- 27:37Speaker 1: lung stull of air. It's the same with talking. A
- 27:41Speaker 1: lot of people don't know it because they it's natural.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Before we speak, we always inhale get along full of air.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And people that stutter don't know how to exhale while
- 27:52Speaker 1: they're talking. They exhale all that air at wants, and
- 27:56Speaker 1: that's how they get stuck on the word. I have
- 27:59Speaker 1: had people, older people in my community, to say, if
- 28:03Speaker 1: you want to stop stuttering, get a dime and put
- 28:05Speaker 1: on your tongue. Hell I swallow that dime because I'm
- 28:10Speaker 1: just so hyper. That didn't work. It was too poor
- 28:14Speaker 1: to get a speech therapist, so forth and soon so
- 28:17Speaker 1: I figured it out on my own. And that's across
- 28:20Speaker 1: the board. Most stuttering is just because of that reason.
- 28:25Speaker 1: People don't know how to breathe properly when they started
- 28:29Speaker 1: talking and they get excited, and when they get excited,
- 28:32Speaker 1: the excel all the air and they still try to
- 28:34Speaker 1: get that last word out and they got no air
- 28:36Speaker 1: left and get stuck on it. And what I say,
- 28:39Speaker 1: before you speak, think of your think of yourself. You're
- 28:43Speaker 1: about them go on the water, swim the length of
- 28:46Speaker 1: the pool, feel your lungs full of bear, and just
- 28:50Speaker 1: let the words flow off your mouth and ex hell
- 28:53Speaker 1: slightly as you're talking. And when your lungs are half
- 28:57Speaker 1: depleted in hell again, continue to talk. Well you you
- 29:05Speaker 1: seem to. I mean you've got licked now. Yeah, practice
- 29:09Speaker 1: my ass out in the mirror with that toothbrush paid off,
- 29:14Speaker 1: So you had. I'm just making assumption because you said
- 29:17Speaker 1: you're like growing up in and I want to get
- 29:18Speaker 1: back to whatever happened in this quarry. We gotta remember
- 29:20Speaker 1: the court, but make an assumption that that you grew
- 29:24Speaker 1: up a bunch of siblings mom dirt, poor dirt, poor,
- 29:29Speaker 1: low income area. You had to um do you do
- 29:34Speaker 1: you feel that you had to like self develop a
- 29:37Speaker 1: lot of like a lot of the discipline you talk about.
- 29:40Speaker 1: What's sort of like a commitment to go to school,
- 29:43Speaker 1: you know, like a commitment to overcome your starter and
- 29:45Speaker 1: be able to do interviews? Or do you think something
- 29:47Speaker 1: you carried something with you from the way you were
- 29:49Speaker 1: brought up and the way your mom raised you to
- 29:51Speaker 1: teach you to be like because I can only imagine
- 29:53Speaker 1: the level of discipline it requires to play professional sports. Right.
- 29:57Speaker 1: This is all. This is all the discipline from my mom. Period.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And my mom told us said, look, you go out
- 30:05Speaker 1: and get in trouble to where you go to jail,
- 30:07Speaker 1: you will stay there. I'm not gonna take my heart
- 30:09Speaker 1: earned money that i gotta keep my lights on, keep
- 30:12Speaker 1: a roof over the head, keep foot on the table
- 30:14Speaker 1: to pay to get your dumb ass out of jail.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I'm not putting up your bail. And she said that
- 30:18Speaker 1: to all of our kids. We never got in trouble,
- 30:21Speaker 1: big coach. We knew my mom was serious. Her word
- 30:25Speaker 1: was golden. If she told you that she was going
- 30:27Speaker 1: to do something, she did it, period. Period. That's just
- 30:31Speaker 1: how it is. And I'm the type of person that
- 30:34Speaker 1: once I went to college and when I was a
- 30:37Speaker 1: young kid, everybody looked at me as the community's worst
- 30:41Speaker 1: nightmare because I was a terror and people wouldn't let
- 30:46Speaker 1: me come over their house to play with their kids.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And I was labeled by the time I was twenty
- 30:53Speaker 1: one to either be in prison or in the cemetery.
- 30:57Speaker 1: That was just me, and I knew that I knew
- 31:00Speaker 1: people thought that way of me. So when I got
- 31:02Speaker 1: the scholarship to go to college. I said, I'm gonna
- 31:04Speaker 1: make something out of this. And the last thing that
- 31:07Speaker 1: I wanted to do was disappointed my mom to where
- 31:13Speaker 1: she got to go to church and have the people
- 31:15Speaker 1: in church there she is, did you hear about her
- 31:17Speaker 1: son getting kicked out of college or got put in
- 31:19Speaker 1: jail or so forth and to on. I didn't want
- 31:21Speaker 1: to bring that type of shame ridicule, not only to
- 31:26Speaker 1: my mom, but to my family, to my friends and
- 31:28Speaker 1: so forth, and so so I walked that straight now
- 31:31Speaker 1: a plan, and I was determined to make something out
- 31:34Speaker 1: of myself. I had a I had a I had
- 31:37Speaker 1: a thing when I was a kid. I said, once
- 31:39Speaker 1: I grew up, I'm gonna never move back home, even
- 31:42Speaker 1: even though it's home, it's where my heart is. I'm
- 31:45Speaker 1: never gonna move back home. I'm going to continue to
- 31:47Speaker 1: go forward. And I said, I'm gonna get out of
- 31:50Speaker 1: this neighborhood either by going to the military to learn
- 31:54Speaker 1: how to flight jets because I'm an airplane fanatic, or
- 31:57Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to college. Well, the military thing didn't
- 32:01Speaker 1: work out, but I had somebody wanted to pay for
- 32:03Speaker 1: me to go to college, and in change, they wanted
- 32:07Speaker 1: me to run up and down the football field for him.
- 32:10Speaker 1: So I helped them feel the stands. I used them
- 32:15Speaker 1: to get an education. And getting back to this the
- 32:21Speaker 1: strip pit thing that swimming. Yes, crew had a big
- 32:27Speaker 1: crew and we and we were going swimming. Well, we
- 32:29Speaker 1: had to pass this. We had to pass this pick
- 32:32Speaker 1: pit on our way. We're board hot as hell during
- 32:36Speaker 1: the summer. Picked up a rock and through at the
- 32:38Speaker 1: pigs and it was fun. And the next day we
- 32:41Speaker 1: did the same thing, and it got worse and worse.
- 32:44Speaker 1: In about two weeks we had killed about we killed
- 32:50Speaker 1: about thirteen thousand dollars worth of this This guy's he
- 32:54Speaker 1: didn't live in the neighborhood. He lived with rocks, with sticks,
- 32:58Speaker 1: with everything. The pigs is killing him. We we we
- 33:02Speaker 1: murdered this man's pigs because that's what we did. I
- 33:07Speaker 1: had my my gang, and if my gang didn't do
- 33:12Speaker 1: what I did, they got beat up. So if I
- 33:14Speaker 1: threw rocks, they had to drow. I picked up a
- 33:17Speaker 1: stick and whack the hog. They had to pick up
- 33:18Speaker 1: a stick and white the hall and the barber, the
- 33:21Speaker 1: neighborhood barber, the man that cut my hair from the
- 33:24Speaker 1: time I was one year old, until I left to
- 33:26Speaker 1: go to college. His house was about a block from
- 33:29Speaker 1: that pig pen, and he heard the pig squill it
- 33:31Speaker 1: and he came down and we were whacking on this
- 33:34Speaker 1: big pig, and he came down and yelled hey, and
- 33:40Speaker 1: shot in the air. He didn't shoot at us, but
- 33:42Speaker 1: he shot in the air to scare us, because the
- 33:44Speaker 1: minister asked him to watch, oh, because somebody was killing
- 33:47Speaker 1: his pigs. And he came down and shot in the air,
- 33:50Speaker 1: and everybody looked and scattered, and out of thirteen kids,
- 33:56Speaker 1: guess who he recognized? The kid who is Harry's been
- 33:59Speaker 1: cutting me? And I jumped the fence and I'm running down.
- 34:04Speaker 1: The day before it rained like the Dickens. That's why
- 34:07Speaker 1: we were going swimming, because we knew the strip pit
- 34:09Speaker 1: was full of water. And I jumped the fence of
- 34:13Speaker 1: the pig pen and I'm running and I know that
- 34:17Speaker 1: there's a ditch big that's about ten feet down, and
- 34:21Speaker 1: across the ditch is about twenty I ran and cleared
- 34:25Speaker 1: the ditch, laying on the opposite bank, and we have
- 34:28Speaker 1: red clay down south and the bank was still soft,
- 34:32Speaker 1: and I sunk up to my calves in the red clay.
- 34:35Speaker 1: When I landed on the other bank, pulled my feet out.
- 34:39Speaker 1: My shoe was stuck in there. Refounding, got my shoe,
- 34:41Speaker 1: put it on there, hauled as home. Got home, went
- 34:44Speaker 1: on the side of the house, rents off my shoes
- 34:47Speaker 1: and everything. When it went upstairs, changed clothes, took my
- 34:50Speaker 1: money clothes and hit them in the hamster under the
- 34:53Speaker 1: underneath the regular dirty clothes. So forth. It's on like
- 34:56Speaker 1: that's gonna save me. And I'm sitting there and watching
- 35:01Speaker 1: mone off. And I'm sitting on my bed at home,
- 35:03Speaker 1: and I hear a car pulled up, and I look
- 35:05Speaker 1: out the window and I see the barber in his
- 35:08Speaker 1: truck and the sheriff's car behind him. And I'm like, oh,
- 35:16Speaker 1: because my mom said, and I'm thinking, if you get
- 35:18Speaker 1: in trouble, you're going to jail, I promise you. And
- 35:22Speaker 1: they walk in the door and I hear my mom
- 35:27Speaker 1: and she called me vinca fancer. Get down here. She said,
- 35:33Speaker 1: if I have to come up there and get you,
- 35:35Speaker 1: I'm gonna throw you down the stairs. The sheriff was sitting,
- 35:37Speaker 1: the sheriff titting tuning up there, and uh came in there,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and I'm like looking and she said, Mr McGruder said you,
- 35:49Speaker 1: Mr McGruder, Mr McGruder, Mr McGruder, and UH said, you
- 35:56Speaker 1: and your friends killing this man's pigs and me. When
- 36:02Speaker 1: I lie, I started and all the male tillers came
- 36:06Speaker 1: out big time, and I couldn't even get two or
- 36:08Speaker 1: three words out. And she said, well off, off, She said, well, officer,
- 36:15Speaker 1: if he did it, if Mr McGruder said that he
- 36:18Speaker 1: saw him because he has been cutting his hair since
- 36:21Speaker 1: he was one year old, and if he said he
- 36:25Speaker 1: and he said, boy, don't you know I know your face?
- 36:28Speaker 1: He said, when I shot that pistol up in there,
- 36:31Speaker 1: all of your turned around and looked at me. He said,
- 36:33Speaker 1: what happened to the to the short pants that you
- 36:36Speaker 1: were wearing, your little cut off jeans that you were wearing.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Where's your sneakers? I bet they're full of mud because
- 36:42Speaker 1: I went down and look where you jumped over the
- 36:43Speaker 1: fence and over the ditch, and I saw where you
- 36:46Speaker 1: landed on the other side, and your feet you have
- 36:49Speaker 1: to sink in the mud. And my sister win and
- 36:51Speaker 1: found my shoes. Now I rent the mud off of
- 36:54Speaker 1: the side, whether red clay was underneath, and the gruise
- 36:57Speaker 1: madam and my mom to incriminating evidence, and I started
- 37:02Speaker 1: crying and I squealed on everybody. I turned the dime
- 37:06Speaker 1: on everybody that was with me, And luckily the owner
- 37:10Speaker 1: of those pigs were a minister across down and he said,
- 37:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna send them all. He said about what
- 37:15Speaker 1: I am gonna allow. They all gonna have to pay
- 37:18Speaker 1: me back. They're all gonna have to get a job.
- 37:20Speaker 1: You can't play summer baseball. You gotta get a job.
- 37:23Speaker 1: And my mother mom said, you're better get that lawnmore
- 37:25Speaker 1: running on the side of house, because that's the only
- 37:27Speaker 1: way you're gonna make money this summer. You better fix
- 37:30Speaker 1: your bicycle and get that lawn more running. And you're
- 37:33Speaker 1: gonna cut grass. You're gonna cut grass five to eating
- 37:37Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday, and you will not go on that
- 37:40Speaker 1: playground and play baseball. So I missed a whole summer
- 37:42Speaker 1: of baseball because that to payback, I think I have
- 37:45Speaker 1: to pay back, like, oh, almost eight hundred dollars. I
- 37:51Speaker 1: had to make eight hundred dollars before school started. What
- 37:54Speaker 1: do you what do you think? Like? What was driver?
- 37:58Speaker 1: You want to kill the pigs? Just boredom? Let's put
- 38:02Speaker 1: it to you like this if you view because do
- 38:05Speaker 1: you view like now? And at some point you told
- 38:08Speaker 1: me about the first time you went deer hunt. Do
- 38:11Speaker 1: you feel that it is hunting to you like now
- 38:15Speaker 1: that you like the hunt that's hunting, do you feel
- 38:17Speaker 1: different than what that did? Because I'm hunting to get
- 38:24Speaker 1: away from being the celebrity that I've become. Um, back then,
- 38:32Speaker 1: I did what I did out of boredom and just
- 38:34Speaker 1: mischiefs were just like, were you angry? I wasn't angry,
- 38:39Speaker 1: just bored. There was nothing to do. There was nothing
- 38:42Speaker 1: to do with my dad. We sat and we had UM.
- 38:46Speaker 1: We sat and we had UH. We we had UM
- 38:50Speaker 1: free lunch center. We had a freelance center down on
- 38:54Speaker 1: the thing and UM we had free lunchers. Then wants
- 38:59Speaker 1: to lunch were over. We had nothing to do. We
- 39:03Speaker 1: go on the rec center get free lunches, and right
- 39:07Speaker 1: after that there was nothing that we could do. So
- 39:11Speaker 1: we had to make our own fun and we did
- 39:14Speaker 1: that by doing whatever we did, and we ended up
- 39:17Speaker 1: killing the man's pigs. Was that the last big trouble
- 39:20Speaker 1: you got into. That was the only trouble I got into.
- 39:23Speaker 1: So once that was over. I knew because my mother
- 39:27Speaker 1: sent my oldest brother to reform school when he was
- 39:30Speaker 1: sixteen because he wouldn't go to school. She dressed him nice,
- 39:34Speaker 1: he wouldn't go to school, so she got the judge
- 39:37Speaker 1: to send him to reform school to make it. And
- 39:38Speaker 1: he had to stay there til he was twenty one
- 39:40Speaker 1: years old, and even when then when he got out
- 39:44Speaker 1: at twenty one, but the judge told him, you're either
- 39:47Speaker 1: gonna go and listen to the armed forces. Are we
- 39:52Speaker 1: gonna send you to the big house? Take your pick.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Your mother has instructed me to tell you you're either
- 39:59Speaker 1: gonna oh to the armed forces to make something out
- 40:02Speaker 1: of yourself or go to the big house. Take your pick.
- 40:04Speaker 1: It doesn't matter to me. A week later he no,
- 40:08Speaker 1: I said, about two and a half weeks later, he
- 40:10Speaker 1: was in basic training. And uh, he was in basic training.
- 40:14Speaker 1: I think in um forbid, in Georgia. And I knew
- 40:19Speaker 1: that that she would have sent me there. She would
- 40:22Speaker 1: have sent me there. Yet he stayed in service for yes, yes, yes,
- 40:27Speaker 1: my oldest brother, and um, he told me the horror
- 40:30Speaker 1: stories just from being the new kid in the reform school.
- 40:33Speaker 1: And he was sixteen and he had to beat up
- 40:36Speaker 1: the bully. He had to literally walk up to the
- 40:39Speaker 1: bully and hit him as hard as he could and
- 40:41Speaker 1: break his nose. And they put him in solitary for
- 40:44Speaker 1: a week and sent the bully to the hospital get
- 40:48Speaker 1: his nose fixed. And when he got out first day
- 40:53Speaker 1: he got out. Leading up to that, the bully and
- 40:58Speaker 1: his buddies for called weeks straight tried to sodomize him
- 41:02Speaker 1: in prison in the in the reform school. And the
- 41:05Speaker 1: guy was about twenty years old and he was sixteen,
- 41:09Speaker 1: and and when he got out of his punishment for
- 41:14Speaker 1: being a week, went to the cave, went to the
- 41:18Speaker 1: cafeteria ate his lunch, when in dumped this trade, kept
- 41:25Speaker 1: the trade, walk up to that bully and whack him
- 41:27Speaker 1: again across the nose with that trade again to let
- 41:31Speaker 1: that bully know that he isn't to be messed with
- 41:33Speaker 1: ever again. And everybody respected him from that point on
- 41:37Speaker 1: because they said that cat's crazy, don't mess with him.
- 41:40Speaker 1: But they never tried to mess with him again. They
- 41:43Speaker 1: never tried to mess with it again. So he had
- 41:45Speaker 1: to break the bullies nose twice to let everybody know
- 41:49Speaker 1: that he's not gonna be mess with so and I
- 41:53Speaker 1: knew that my mom would have sent me there, and
- 41:55Speaker 1: I didn't want no part of that, So straighten, No,
- 41:59Speaker 1: I didn't want the lifestyle. So I straightened, period. And
- 42:02Speaker 1: that's that. That was my scared straight moment at thirteen.
- 42:08Speaker 1: And I've been been walking to straight narrow ever since then.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And like I said, it's just because the last thing
- 42:15Speaker 1: that I want to do is disappoint my mother. So
- 42:18Speaker 1: tell me about how it came to be that you
- 42:20Speaker 1: got you mentioned earlier, the first time you, um, we're
- 42:24Speaker 1: invited to go deer hunting when you were freshman in school.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Freshman in school, how did like, what was your interest
- 42:33Speaker 1: and what were you drawn to? And how did the
- 42:35Speaker 1: invitation come about? And then what was your sort of
- 42:38Speaker 1: perception of what was going on? My freshman year, we
- 42:41Speaker 1: lived in a football door and I punter named Louis
- 42:44Speaker 1: Kolbert Louis Coba was out in the yard shooting his bowl.
- 42:49Speaker 1: And I was fascinated with bows because should make mine.
- 42:52Speaker 1: And I've never seen a compound bow. And he was
- 42:56Speaker 1: shooting uh compound bow and he was shooting the style
- 42:59Speaker 1: foam cup about twenty five yards away and he would
- 43:02Speaker 1: shoot and I couldn't see the arrow, but I would
- 43:04Speaker 1: see that cup where the arrow would hit it and
- 43:06Speaker 1: stick in the ground, and I see that cup. Moment, damn,
- 43:08Speaker 1: he hit that cup. I watched him again, and I
- 43:11Speaker 1: watched him for fifteen minutes and he hit that cup.
- 43:14Speaker 1: He go pull those six arrows out and go back
- 43:16Speaker 1: and stand there standing on the picnic table and shoot
- 43:19Speaker 1: that cup like and I'm like, wow, I like that.
- 43:23Speaker 1: I went down and can you show me how to
- 43:26Speaker 1: shoot that? And he did. He took me five minutes. Yeah,
- 43:32Speaker 1: and uh well I wasn't at the time. So he
- 43:36Speaker 1: showed me how to shoot that boat. And within five minutes,
- 43:39Speaker 1: I was hitting that cup and I was fascinated with
- 43:41Speaker 1: so I was looking So I was looking forward every
- 43:44Speaker 1: Sunday evening because we played on Saturday. Every Sunday, after
- 43:48Speaker 1: we watched film our, I was looking forward to getting
- 43:51Speaker 1: with him to go shoot this bow watching watch we
- 43:55Speaker 1: played on the football game. We would go and shoot
- 43:58Speaker 1: this bowl. And I had to go home through a
- 44:02Speaker 1: little town called alex Alexander City, Alabama called it alex City.
- 44:09Speaker 1: There's a highway that goes from Auburn to Birmingham called
- 44:12Speaker 1: two eighty and Alex City is on two eighty I
- 44:14Speaker 1: stopped at a little sporting good store there in the
- 44:17Speaker 1: first boat that I ever bought was a fred Bear
- 44:22Speaker 1: both called sixty three dollars with the arrows. To this day,
- 44:28Speaker 1: I still have that bow with the same string on
- 44:31Speaker 1: it that I bought on it. I won't pull it back,
- 44:33Speaker 1: but I still got that bow. It was about ten pounds.
- 44:37Speaker 1: It's a compound bow. No um, I had sights on
- 44:43Speaker 1: it because I couldn't shoot instincting, and I put because
- 44:47Speaker 1: I shot his bowl and he showed me you look
- 44:50Speaker 1: through this little peep hole here and you put that
- 44:52Speaker 1: top pin on what you want to hit, and just
- 44:56Speaker 1: you know, it's funny we were talking about you mentioned
- 44:58Speaker 1: someone shooting instinctive with the compound. I kind of forgot
- 45:02Speaker 1: about it. But the first year I shot, the first
- 45:05Speaker 1: couple of year I ever, Yeah, first several year I
- 45:08Speaker 1: ever shot with the bowl. That's how we were talking
- 45:10Speaker 1: to shoot. We shot fingers, no releases, we shot fingers
- 45:15Speaker 1: and no sites and just shot instinctive with the compound
- 45:18Speaker 1: bowl with the flip arrest down. You remember flip arrest Yes,
- 45:22Speaker 1: a little yeah, remembers I had a flip arrests on
- 45:28Speaker 1: my boat. But the man that taught me how to
- 45:30Speaker 1: hunt the first time I ever went hunting. His name
- 45:33Speaker 1: was George man Um. He's probably one of the most
- 45:37Speaker 1: famous bowl hunters from the state of Alabama. And he
- 45:41Speaker 1: taught me. How How did he get how did he
- 45:43Speaker 1: get interested in you? Though I got interested in him.
- 45:46Speaker 1: I think through our team doctor, because our team doctor
- 45:48Speaker 1: hunted on his property. He had a lot of property
- 45:51Speaker 1: and right outside of Auburn, right outside the campus, no
- 45:54Speaker 1: more than thirty minutes from the campus, and our team
- 45:57Speaker 1: doctor and he took me and and I set up
- 46:01Speaker 1: in a tree stand with the rifle the first time,
- 46:04Speaker 1: on about a one acre wheat field, and he said,
- 46:07Speaker 1: you sit here. If you see a buck, take him.
- 46:09Speaker 1: If you want to take him, take him and don't
- 46:12Speaker 1: get out of the tree until I come and get you. Well,
- 46:14Speaker 1: I'm thinking, well, buck walked out right before dark, dropped
- 46:20Speaker 1: him right down the spot. And I'm sitting there in
- 46:23Speaker 1: the stand. About twenty seconds later, after I shot that, dear,
- 46:27Speaker 1: my knees started shaking and trim like, what the hill's wrong?
- 46:31Speaker 1: I got buck fever, legs shaking, and once I got
- 46:35Speaker 1: that under control, it got dark. So I'm thinking well,
- 46:38Speaker 1: he's gonna come and get me. Six o'clock around. It
- 46:42Speaker 1: gets dark at five thirty during the fall. Seven o'clock
- 46:46Speaker 1: comes around, you know, George, come and get me. Eight
- 46:49Speaker 1: thirty comes around, and you can't see nothing. You could
- 46:52Speaker 1: hear stuff walking around the woods. And I've never been
- 46:55Speaker 1: deer hunting before in my life. This is my first time.
- 46:57Speaker 1: So I get down from the stand, and I got
- 46:59Speaker 1: the rifle across my shoulder, and I'm getting down from
- 47:03Speaker 1: the tree stand. I could hear stop walking in, don't stop,
- 47:06Speaker 1: something walking stop, And I put one foot on the
- 47:09Speaker 1: ground and a dear blue at me. I never and
- 47:13Speaker 1: I didn't know what it was. And I went back
- 47:16Speaker 1: up that day. I'm lad got back in that stand
- 47:20Speaker 1: and I chambered around because I'm thinking, bigot, I'm thinking
- 47:27Speaker 1: every monster in the world that you could think of
- 47:30Speaker 1: at that time. It's waiting on me to come down
- 47:32Speaker 1: these steps. And I went up there and I sat.
- 47:36Speaker 1: I tried to go back down it again, and the
- 47:38Speaker 1: same thing happened back up the damn tree stand. So
- 47:41Speaker 1: he ended up coming get me. What he did? He
- 47:43Speaker 1: sat and he dozed off in this rocking chair on
- 47:47Speaker 1: the trump board. So he didn't end up coming get
- 47:49Speaker 1: me till nine o'clock. But I didn't get out of
- 47:52Speaker 1: that damn tree stand until I saw the lights of
- 47:54Speaker 1: his truck coming through the woods. And when he came
- 47:57Speaker 1: through the woods, the lights lit up the woods. They
- 47:59Speaker 1: were dear everywhere. There were deer everywhere. We got down,
- 48:03Speaker 1: got my deer, and the rest is history. I was.
- 48:06Speaker 1: He taught me how to He taught me how to
- 48:10Speaker 1: really shoot my bow, But my first deal was with
- 48:13Speaker 1: the rifle. So did you then take off and start
- 48:17Speaker 1: hunting all the time or did you have like sort
- 48:18Speaker 1: of tend to your career and then come back to
- 48:20Speaker 1: it later. No, But I hunted and fish. That was
- 48:23Speaker 1: my way of getting off a campus. Like I said,
- 48:25Speaker 1: that was my way back then, still getting away from
- 48:28Speaker 1: being bo Jack's. I get with him and we talked
- 48:30Speaker 1: hunting because he would make his own arrows, and he
- 48:33Speaker 1: shot these big, these eastern arrows with the Have you
- 48:37Speaker 1: ever seen the Simmons broadheads broadhead called Simmons, it's a
- 48:40Speaker 1: one piece of it's a one piece steel broadhead that's
- 48:43Speaker 1: about two grand. It's called a Simmons land shark, no
- 48:49Speaker 1: big broadhead. And he fleshed his own arrows, and he
- 48:55Speaker 1: shot these easterns. These were like seven teams. They look
- 49:01Speaker 1: like your first grade pencil, that pencil, these were telephone posts.
- 49:06Speaker 1: And he shoot extinctive and he has killed every animent
- 49:09Speaker 1: that you could think of with that. And he taught
- 49:13Speaker 1: me how to hunt. He taught me how to hunt,
- 49:16Speaker 1: and so forth and so on, and uh. It was
- 49:19Speaker 1: just one of the things that I do so till
- 49:22Speaker 1: this day. All of my hunting skills, all of my
- 49:25Speaker 1: hunting knowledge that I know, is a credit of George P. Man.
- 49:32Speaker 1: He passed away about six years ago. He passed about
- 49:35Speaker 1: six seven years ago. Yes, but he taught me how
- 49:38Speaker 1: to hunt. When you were coming up through your professional career,
- 49:44Speaker 1: did you did you speak openly about hunting or was
- 49:49Speaker 1: it just not something that came up or you shot
- 49:51Speaker 1: away from talking about it. I spoke openly about hunting
- 49:55Speaker 1: to people that hunt that wanted to period. But no,
- 49:59Speaker 1: I didn't go running brag about well I'm a big
- 50:01Speaker 1: time hunter in anything like that. Now it's just whoever
- 50:04Speaker 1: brought up hunting in a conversation, I openly talked about it.
- 50:08Speaker 1: That was just like I say, that's my escape, that's
- 50:12Speaker 1: one of my escapes from my professional life has taken
- 50:19Speaker 1: on more relevancy now though later in life. With your
- 50:22Speaker 1: kids or no. Um, my oldest son, he likes a
- 50:29Speaker 1: pheasant hunt with me. He's a horrible shot, but he
- 50:33Speaker 1: goes out with me, and and my other two don't
- 50:38Speaker 1: have interest in it. My youngest son and my daughter.
- 50:40Speaker 1: My oldest he goes sometimes with me. We uh, did
- 50:44Speaker 1: you try to get him into it? And they didn't
- 50:45Speaker 1: want to get into it. You know, one thing that
- 50:47Speaker 1: I one thing that I've never done. I've never pushed
- 50:50Speaker 1: my kids at anything, but but education. If you want
- 50:54Speaker 1: to do it, you can do it. If you want
- 50:57Speaker 1: to pursue something, you aren't going to pursue it for
- 50:59Speaker 1: we and then give it up because just too hard.
- 51:01Speaker 1: You will stick with them. So both of my sons
- 51:05Speaker 1: they played junior high football, and everybody expected them them
- 51:10Speaker 1: to be both Jackson, both Jackson type, which they weren't.
- 51:17Speaker 1: And I never pushed them at it. And I just
- 51:19Speaker 1: despised parents that sit up and push their kids and
- 51:23Speaker 1: push their kids and push their kids, because in the end,
- 51:26Speaker 1: when they get to be teenagers, they are gonna hate
- 51:29Speaker 1: that sport and they are going to despise your parents
- 51:32Speaker 1: for pushing them in that sport. You gotta let a
- 51:35Speaker 1: kid make up his kids or her mind if they
- 51:38Speaker 1: want to pursue that sport or not. Because that's kind
- 51:41Speaker 1: of funny thing about the way you were describing your upbringing.
- 51:44Speaker 1: This here you have. You know, you're someone who many
- 51:47Speaker 1: people will site as the greatest athlete of all time.
- 51:51Speaker 1: And your mom was holding you back from playing sports
- 51:55Speaker 1: rather than putting you in all the traveling camps, and
- 51:59Speaker 1: didn't have the means, didn't have the money too. We
- 52:02Speaker 1: had a little league baseball team which was free. You
- 52:05Speaker 1: signed up to play, and I did. At was eleven
- 52:11Speaker 1: years old. Little league and nobody was every everybody was
- 52:15Speaker 1: afraid to catch, to be the catcher, I said, I'll catch.
- 52:21Speaker 1: One day, I caught. The next day I pitched. Next
- 52:23Speaker 1: day I played short stop. Next day I caught. And
- 52:27Speaker 1: the little league season was a month. We played four
- 52:30Speaker 1: or five games. We played on Saturday and we played
- 52:33Speaker 1: on Sunday. And the season lasts about a month a
- 52:36Speaker 1: month and a half max. Then when that was over,
- 52:40Speaker 1: I moved up and played Pony league team. I played
- 52:43Speaker 1: with the I played let's say I played with them.
- 52:47Speaker 1: I played with the third team to sixteen year olds.
- 52:51Speaker 1: And when in the middle of the Pony League season,
- 52:55Speaker 1: the catcher for the men semi pro baseball team wrecked
- 53:00Speaker 1: on his motorcycle and broke his leg. I guess who
- 53:03Speaker 1: was a catcher at eleven years old for the men,
- 53:05Speaker 1: said my pros league. And I was throwing him out
- 53:07Speaker 1: on my knees and I was getting hits at eleven
- 53:11Speaker 1: years old. And when we get off the when we
- 53:15Speaker 1: if we would go to the next town to play,
- 53:17Speaker 1: we didn't have busses and every right down because we
- 53:19Speaker 1: got on the back of the pickup trucks. So we
- 53:20Speaker 1: ride in the bed of the pickup truck and go
- 53:25Speaker 1: to the next town and play. And I get off
- 53:27Speaker 1: and I put on the catcher's gear, and all the
- 53:30Speaker 1: other team that, hey, you all are gonna get that
- 53:32Speaker 1: kid hurt. You're gonna get that kid hurt. He don't
- 53:35Speaker 1: need to be playing with us. And the coach said,
- 53:37Speaker 1: y'a all, just wait, you all just wait. And I'm catching,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and I'm calling signals and i'm and I'm catching like
- 53:45Speaker 1: a major league catcher. I'm picking stuff out of the dirt,
- 53:49Speaker 1: and their speed, sir for the other team got on
- 53:52Speaker 1: base and tried to steal on me. I threw him
- 53:54Speaker 1: out from my knees and they were like wow. And
- 53:59Speaker 1: when the game was over, the coach from the other
- 54:02Speaker 1: team say, hey, I tell what if you come play
- 54:05Speaker 1: for my team next summer. I'll buy your brand new bicycle.
- 54:11Speaker 1: I will buy you a brand new bixyle. I bought
- 54:13Speaker 1: your brand new tents speak, I'll bout your brand new
- 54:15Speaker 1: tens for you. But was it you've successfully raised kids
- 54:23Speaker 1: down right, and they didn't you know, like you mentioned,
- 54:28Speaker 1: people would say to you like, oh, they're gonna be
- 54:30Speaker 1: just like you were, the next generation whatever. Um, So
- 54:35Speaker 1: did you have something did you harbor any kind of
- 54:37Speaker 1: like even if you didn't act on it? Did you
- 54:38Speaker 1: have hopes about like Rich was asked about right, like
- 54:42Speaker 1: whether you kids grew up like in a hunting fish
- 54:44Speaker 1: as you did. And you're saying that you didn't have
- 54:46Speaker 1: expectations there and didn't have a desire to push mean
- 54:50Speaker 1: then in direction, is it just that you didn't act
- 54:52Speaker 1: on it but you still hoped it or did you
- 54:54Speaker 1: not even hope? No? No No, no, no, no no no.
- 54:56Speaker 1: I wanted my kids to be successful at whatever the
- 55:00Speaker 1: hard to desire. I'm not like I said. The only
- 55:03Speaker 1: thing that I'm gonna push you at it's being a
- 55:07Speaker 1: good student. You have to be a good student because
- 55:10Speaker 1: your mom graduated college with a doctorate, your dad graduated
- 55:15Speaker 1: college with the BS. And if we did it, you're
- 55:19Speaker 1: gonna do it. What's your wife have a doctor? Then? Uh?
- 55:22Speaker 1: Clinical psychology. I read somewhere that you I feel like
- 55:28Speaker 1: I read somewhere that you said you wouldn't want your
- 55:31Speaker 1: kid to play football. Not now what I know. It's
- 55:38Speaker 1: just the game is violent. The game is violent, and
- 55:44Speaker 1: and um, the game will use you up. NFL stands
- 55:53Speaker 1: not for long, but you but you're talking about head
- 56:01Speaker 1: injuries or just hit hip injuries, head head injuries. Yes,
- 56:04Speaker 1: and more and more young kids now everybody want their
- 56:09Speaker 1: kids to play tackle football and not in not realizing
- 56:13Speaker 1: that a young child's brain it's not fully developed until
- 56:17Speaker 1: he's in his twenties, and they still get brain damage.
- 56:21Speaker 1: So you're constantly banging heads like that. The only animal
- 56:25Speaker 1: that God has put on this earth that has a
- 56:28Speaker 1: protective cushion around this brain is big horn sheet. Oh
- 56:35Speaker 1: that's what I was gonna get. Um, come on, protective
- 56:39Speaker 1: cushion around their heads, around their brain. A big horn
- 56:43Speaker 1: can withstand the blow I'll take to crack your skull.
- 56:48Speaker 1: But that's not A big horn can still have brain damage.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Come on, five seconds, Come on you you all think
- 56:54Speaker 1: of it, because Matt sitting there like a deer caught
- 56:57Speaker 1: in the head like he don't he really don't. He's
- 56:59Speaker 1: a little I don't know. You don't know. Come on, Matt,
- 57:03Speaker 1: do you know? No, go back to sleep, all right?
- 57:09Speaker 1: Come on, God, do you know? Do you know what
- 57:12Speaker 1: it is? No? Man, I don't know. A woodpecker, man,
- 57:17Speaker 1: woodpecker is the only animal God has made that has
- 57:23Speaker 1: a protected cushion around his brain. Every everything else has
- 57:27Speaker 1: liquid between his brain and Michelle, Oh, I didn't know that.
- 57:32Speaker 1: You learn two things today? And since your kids want
- 57:35Speaker 1: since your kids want woodpeckers, you didn't want him, don't
- 57:39Speaker 1: want him in football? Know what you know? Don't know? No?
- 57:41Speaker 1: Does it feel funny for you to say that? Do
- 57:43Speaker 1: you feel like you're No, you don't feel like you're
- 57:46Speaker 1: being like a trader? No, not at all. I love
- 57:49Speaker 1: my kids. I want my kids to grow up to
- 57:52Speaker 1: have a normal life. I want my kids to have
- 57:55Speaker 1: a normal life. I know the do you know what
- 58:01Speaker 1: will make you see the light. Go watch the movie
- 58:04Speaker 1: Concussion watching them short. Watch that movie and get in
- 58:09Speaker 1: touch with me after after you watch it and see
- 58:11Speaker 1: because most of the guys that they talked about in
- 58:14Speaker 1: the movie, I either played with or played against, and
- 58:17Speaker 1: I knew them and I didn't know that they were
- 58:18Speaker 1: dead until I saw the movie. Until I saw the movie.
- 58:23Speaker 1: And I know players right now, famous players, Hall of
- 58:26Speaker 1: Fame players that has twenty four hour helpers because if
- 58:32Speaker 1: they leave the house, they don't know how to get back.
- 58:35Speaker 1: Did you have any concussions? I think I had one.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I know I had one playing against the Raiders, and
- 58:41Speaker 1: I don't know who we were playing, but I just
- 58:44Speaker 1: I think we're I think we're playing I think we're
- 58:47Speaker 1: playing Denver. I'm not mistaken because this is my second
- 58:51Speaker 1: year with the Raiders. The first year, we ran a
- 58:54Speaker 1: play that was designed. It was a It was a
- 58:56Speaker 1: tall sweep to the right to where the whole team
- 59:00Speaker 1: swept right there because we know that the defense don't
- 59:03Speaker 1: want me to get on the corner because if I
- 59:05Speaker 1: beat you to the corner, I'm gonna beat everybody to
- 59:09Speaker 1: the goal line. So when we ran the talk, we
- 59:12Speaker 1: had a play that's called the reverse sweep. So we
- 59:15Speaker 1: he pits the ball to me, running right, I take
- 59:19Speaker 1: two steps, stop and pivot because everybody is sprinting to
- 59:22Speaker 1: the side line, and beat everybody back to this sideline. Well,
- 59:25Speaker 1: the cornerback stayed home, who was a guy named Mike
- 59:28Speaker 1: Harton whose friend of mine. He stayed home for Denver,
- 59:31Speaker 1: and I only had him to get pass to get
- 59:34Speaker 1: the goal line. I swelled back, beat everybody around this side,
- 59:38Speaker 1: and he lined up on me and I fake right
- 59:41Speaker 1: or left and ran right over, broke his collar bone
- 59:44Speaker 1: and score. The next year we ran the same play.
- 59:49Speaker 1: And after that season that I ran over my card
- 59:51Speaker 1: and he got traded to the Raiders, so he was
- 59:54Speaker 1: now my teammate, and um, we ran that same play.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: The same thing happened really verse ran over the cornerback
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: and as I'm running over him after I hit him,
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: he didn't necessarily as part of the plan that you
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: run over the cornerback. Well, I either, well, I couldn't
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: run around him because he was right on the sideline
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: and I had pursued coming this way. So it just
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: goes straight. Go north, no eastern west, here, go north,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: and I run the guy over I can't think of
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: who it was. And I'm stepping on him, trying to
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: get past him, and somebody comes up behind me and
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: it hits me right behind the ear. Their helmet hit
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: my helmet right behind the ear, and it's like somebody
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: somebody just turned, not put but short circuited me. And
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: I just went numb and left and the ball fell out.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: But I fell on the ball and I had enough
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: still here to say, get the ball back, get the
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: ball back. And then one time realized that I had
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: the ball all that I didn't lose it in a fumble.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: I'm telling myself, get up. You can't let these m
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: mel know that you hurt. Get up, get up, get
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: to the sideline and just rest. Just get up and
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: get to the saline. So I get up, and in
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: my ears, I you got eighty thousand people just in
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: the stands. I can't hear nothing but the in my ear.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: And I get up and like, just get to the sideline.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: I'm undoing my chin strap and I walked through and
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: I worked my way through the crowd, through my teammates,
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: and I go and I go to sit on the bench.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Now used a profanity word here, but but I worked
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: my way through the crowd and I go to sit
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: on the bench and as soon as my butt touches
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the bench, somebody grasps my arm and yanked up and said,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: you on the other side, motherfucker. I used serious swear
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: to God, and they pushed me out on the field.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: And I'm walking across the field and I looked down
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: and my feet are my feet not touching the ground.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: I'm levitating off the ground. And I see both trainers
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: running across the field. You know how you and that
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: love story to where you see both couples on the
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: beach running towards each other. And they're running towards me
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: and slow motion like that, and I'm just looking at
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: him smiles and ere. They come and get me, take
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: me to the bench, and I don't know Jack. They said,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: sit him on the bench and asked him questions until
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: he gets annoyed that they asked me. And they asked
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: me simple questions that I should have known. They asked me,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: was that married? I didn't know. They asked me how
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: many kids I had? I said one, I had three.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: They asked me who were we playing? So I figured
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: that I cheat and look out on the field and
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: I saw red and white, but it was orange and blue.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: I thought we were I said Buffalo. They said, hell, no,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: we're playing Differ. He said what's the score? I said,
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I don't know if they said you scored the first
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: two touchdowns. Food score was seven. I didn't know that.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: They asked me a litting your questions, and Steve Burline
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: was the backup quarterback, so he sat beside me, and
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I sat between Steve Burline and my fullback, Steve Smith,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and they were asking me questions and I didn't know anything.
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: And they said, dude, you know your wife name? I
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: am I married? I'm serious. I was just that gone.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: And the thing that brought me back after they asked
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: me about fifty questions, Steve Burline said, wins pay Day
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: said Monday. I knew, didn't paid, And I said it
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: just like that Monday. And when I said that, because
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: we are also trying to watch the police running the stadium,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: because the Raider fans fight. If you come to come
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: to come to the coliseum and pull for the other
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: team or anything bad about the Raiders, the fans fight,
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: So the cops are running trying to break up fights.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: So we're watched watching the cops running as they're asking
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: me questions, and a gunshot goes on bow and I duck,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I crens and everybody starts running, and I'm like, where
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: is everybody? And Steve Smith calling Smitty. I said, Smitty,
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: where the hell is is everybody going? I said, somebody shoot?
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: He says, halftime full? So I said, where is everybody
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: going to the locker room? I said, which, where is
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the locker room? He said, grabbed on to my jersey
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: and just hold on, like grabbed on to his jersey
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: and followed them to the locker room. My concussion. I
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: had one concussion and that was it. I remember it
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: like it was yesterday. And the day after that. Everybody
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: that got the injured gotta go and get treatment on Monday,
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: and I'm driving that home. I lived in Pla del
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: Rey at the time, upside the mountain where you can
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: overlook the beach and everything, not too far from the
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: oil refineries that's behind l a X Airport, And I
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: had to go down Lincoln Boulevard to go home, and
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: there's a supermarket right there. I think it's Albertson's right there,
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: and I knew that I was sold to turn at
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: that Albertson's. But I didn't know. I forgot how to
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: get to my house. And this is when they had
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: the big block phones, that big phone that was about
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: five pounds, that was like a military walkie talking. I
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: had that phone, called my wife. I looked at my
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: wallet and got my wife's number. I called her and
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: I said, I don't know how to get home. She said,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: stop playing. I said, I'm serious. I said, I'm at
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: the corner of so and so, and I forgot how
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: to get back to the house that we were renting,
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: and we have been there for a month and a half.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: I totally forgot. And she got in her car, came
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: up and brought the sitter with her. Sitter draw my
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: car and got in the car with my wife and
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: she took me home. And that was the only concussion
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: that I had, So yes, and we have in there
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: are players that have had a dozen concussions. One was
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: enough for me and and um, I didn't know it
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: at the time, but I went back and played the
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: third quarter of the game. Not trying to say anything
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: negative about the sport, but at the time that was
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: something that was pushed under the rug and they didn't
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: come out. Nobody talked about it. Doctors didn't talk about it,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: but they knew, and um, so when they asked me,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: and I watched them the little Friday Night tykes, the
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: football games that they have on National TV Night between
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: the little level leagues. And in that movie Concussions, they
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: show these weekend warrior coaches coaching these little kids and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: they get them twenty yards apart and let them run
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: head on with each other. This is how the movie ends.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: These two kids but heads like ram and they knock
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: each other out. You had the same wife the whole time.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: M I think, what's your how long you've been married?
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: How long I've been married? It'll be thirty two years
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: this September. What's your what's your best piece of marriage advice?
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: What's your best piece of marriage advice? Yes, dear, that's
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: what you run with. You just run, you just roll over. Yes, really, yes, honey,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: give me an example, Give me an example. Get an example. Um, um,
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: you want to go to movies with me to watch
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: chick Flick. Yes, dear, it's a good example. Yes, and
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: you've been doing that for all all those years. Often yes,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: often on yes, m hm, we have a friend UM
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: named Randy who I think that I don't know if
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: he made it up, but his thing was for his marriage.
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: Advice is uh, you might know. I'm got named Brandy Newberg.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: He has a hunting show. He he goes by um
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: peace before justice, which when I apply it works really well.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: But it's very, very difficult for me to not pursue
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: justice as well as peace, meaning you are going to
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: pay for what you did, and it's hard to not
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: It's really really difficult for me to bury the justice part.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: To make a long story short, I wish I could
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: tell you what the old man told me, but I
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: can't say it on the radio. I'll tell you quitting
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: the shows over add something about bow Um. You've seen
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: him in action. I've seen him in action. He's given
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: me some good advice in the past about maintaining a
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: happy marriage. One is uh, he is a very um
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: organized person. He keeps a tight household. UM like a
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: nice clean house. I think he is refurbishing in the
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: living room right now. Very clean, very organized. And two
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: is he cooks a lot for the family. I am
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: the cooking house. He's the cooking house. That's an enormous advantage. Yeah,
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: but I do THEE do that? That is I don't
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: know if that really it hasn't helped you. Maybe you
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: don't know how much it helps you. It has to
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: help really. I mean they're cooking up a storm. Man.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: My stock price would just go through the roof if
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: I could cook. So that that's an enormous part is Uh.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: I know his family. Uh. The other thing I would
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: add about him is, um, he is very thoughtful around
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: the details with his wife and just you know, remembering
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: the important things. And he's always bringing stuff home, ETCETERA
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: little over boy, more than you think. Yes, absolutely you have.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: You have to make it work. You have to make
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: it work. Let me ask you about another thing I'm
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: curious about, going from going from growing up dirt poor,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: as you said, so all of a sudden be coming
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: through through professional sports contracts becoming like wealthy, that wealthy
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: by anybody's standard financially. Was that was that hard having
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: not seen like a model of how to manage that
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: kind of stuff? Um? Was it hard to like visualize
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the money? You know? Something? I say it like this,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: you can't miss something that you never had. And um,
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: my mother always told me when you get to the
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: point where you start to look down your nose at
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: your fellow man. It's gonna be the day or your downfall,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: the beginning of your downfall. And U SHO always show
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: me to treat people like you want to be treated.
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: So no, no, I have. My business manager is the
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: same business manager that I had when I left over
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: over thirty or five years ago. Same business manager, same
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: financial people, the same attorney. You have a lot of
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: loyalty to people, Well, well, if you do right, I'll
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: put it to you like this. Once I let you
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: in my little circle, it's up to you whether or
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: not you stay in that circle or not. Period. And
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: I've had some people that I had to exile from
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: that circle, and so forth and so on and and
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: and I don't look back. I don't look back from
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: that because I'm I am the type of person that
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: I will get out of my bed at three in
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: the morning and drive a hundred miles to pick you
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: up when your car breaks down on the road. That's
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: just how I am. That's that's that's just me. Um m.
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: If you need something, if I got it, you can
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: have it. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: my mouth. The man upstairs just I think he blessed
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: me a little bit more than others, and I think
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: him for it, that's all. Yeah, mhm, right now, we're
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: on turkey this morning, on turkeys some morning, and you
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: were hunting with a crossbowl, hung with the crossbow because
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: you injured your or harbor an old injury. Yes, but
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: I had shoulder replacement surgery. It'll be two two years.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: Shoulder replacement slash, rotatory rotator cuff reconstruction, same morning. Yeah,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: is that a residual effect of your That's not football,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: that's a baseball injury. I do better ball Dion Sander's
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: head and dislocated my shoulder. This is a night the
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: Kansas City Roles played the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: And uh, this was after This was after my third bat.
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: This was after my third consecutive home run. That night,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: I hit three home runs and had seven r b
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: I s went to the outfield dove at a ball,
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Dion Sander said, which I got my butt above my head,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: which is a no no in baseball when you dive
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: at the ball. But it was a low screamer. Don't
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: get your butt above your head. Ye don't die at
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: an angle down. You always die with your butt. Lord,
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: than you're so your tor soo can hit first and
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: you because when you die at the ground head first,
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: this party is gonna hit the ground first. And that's
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: what happened. This hit first. That's okay at this shoulder
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: and I left the game deon. Sandra's got a triple
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: out of it. How when you wake up with the
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: morning with your hip shoulder, like, how much of the
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: day is sort of a physical reminder of none really none,
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: none period. I I like the quality of life that
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: I get, so I'm so I am willing to put
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: forth the effort to do that, as far as rehab,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: as far as therapy. I have a wonderful life and
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: I'm not gonna have an artificial hip, artificial shoulder slow
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: me down. Now some mornings I'll wake up. But I
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: laugh when people look at me and say bowl you
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: like you can still play football? In my saying that, man,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: I pulled a muscle lift in the toilet seat this morning.
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: Anything about playing or a baseball or anything that I'm
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: looking forward to, golf, fishing, driving my old cars, drive
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: my motorcycle. If my wife led to me and and
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: so looking to on. So that's what I look forward to.
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Last thing and then then whatever else you want to
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: If you want anything else you want to get into.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Tell people, but all the different sorts of businesses you're
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: involved in. Though we're not just laying no, I'm I'm
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: I still have that hyper active persona that I had
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: when I was a kid. Um. If I'm idle, I'm
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: usually getting in trouble. So UM. I have my marketing
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: company which is called both Jackson Enterprises. I have both
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: Jackson's signature Foods, which I have a line of I
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: have my own line of steaks, my on line of burgers,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: my own line of seafood, and they're in retail in
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: food service around the country. UM. I have my line
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: of sports Complexes Complex and Lamont, Illinois called both Jackson
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: Elite Sports and uh Lamont Illinois, another one in Hill.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: You're Ohio, right outside of Ohio state, right outside of Columbus,
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: And I'm getting ready to break ground on my third
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: facility and Displaines, Illinois, not too far from the O'Hara Airport.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I got that going on. I'm on the national speaking tour.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I've been on the national speaking speaking tour for about
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: a little over twenty six years. Um, go around the
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: country speaking touring. And I got my hand in about
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: four or five different other business interests right now, that's
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: on the that's on the burner. So I keep myself
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: pretty busy. Yeah, And this is only the second podcast
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: that I've done in my life. Which one was better?
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: Which one was better? I don't know. I gotta wait
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: till this is over. Good answer. You know, I would
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: add something because I know bow Uh from the food
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: side of his business. Um. You know, very well respected,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: very ethical businessman. Um. You talked about loyalty. Um, he
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: has a lot of partners that he's had for a
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: long time. He also, it should be noted that he
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: has a very big charitable Yeah. I forgot to mention. Yeah,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: that is something that is very near and dear to
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: his heart. So maybe you could take a second to
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: talk about that. Yes, I'm glad you, thank you, Matt
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: for a moment. I have a couple of charities that
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: that that I have that I have taken on. The
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: first one that I did was after two thousand eleven
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: when the big tornadoes went through the state of Alabama
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: and the loss of life was almost four people across
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: the state. The Tornado state on the ground from the
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: Mississippi Alabama border to the Alabama Georgia state line. So
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: um um, I think it was a category for Tornado
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: state on the ground uh F four tornado F five,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: which is the strongest that they can get. And when
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: it was over the aftermath, it left over three d
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: and seven seven Alabamians dead from that and um. During
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: the Super Bowl of that year, I called the governor
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: at halftime and we talked the whole halftime because I
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: told him that I wanted to do something to help
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: give back to my state. I said I, I said,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: I need to do something. I said, I just don't
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: feel right unless I do something, and I need your help.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: And the governor got on board with it, and I
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: did a charity bike ride, bicycle ride colch to state
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: and I called people like Trek Bicycles, who is one
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: of the leading bicycle manufacturers in the world, and the
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: owner he came on board. I called the owner of Nike,
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: he came on board. I called the executives of Coca Cola,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: they came on board. I called owners of different come
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: and these big, big Communications out of Birmingham Track Travel,
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: which is a team that put on all of the
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: stuff for the professional riders for a track, bicycles for
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: the Tour de France and all their big rides. So
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: I got all these people and companies involved. In the
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: first year in two thousand and twelve, we rode across
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: the state in five days and every day we covered
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: from anywhere from fifty to seventy per day and everyone
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: I wrote every day and we had everybody. We had
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: a ton of celebrities come in. We had Ken Griffi Jr.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Scottie Pippen, Lance Armstrong, you name it. We had a
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: Peek a Boo Street, We had celebrities, We had paraplegic
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: um athlete, Formula one race car drivers to come in
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: to ride with us. We have a couple that have
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: come in for the past two or three years from
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: England to ride in the ride because they saw it
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: on online. That was the first year we did five
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: days and now we've gotten it down to one day.
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: It's on a Saturday on the campus of Auburn. We
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: have two rides that morning. One starts at six am,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: which is a sixty mile ride, and we have a
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: lot in itself out every year and the second ride
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: starts at ten am and it's a twenty mile ride
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: because we have riders from five years old to eight
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: five years old. How much month do you guys raised
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: that first year we raised a little over three dollars
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: and within eight years but we raised a couple of
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: million dollars and all of that money goes to build
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: community tornado shelters across the state and to put tornado
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: warning systems in rural areas where there aren't any. And
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: um we've helped establish at least at least seventy to
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: eighty community tornado shelters around the world around the state.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: And those are for like this rural community here, attorney
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: comes to here. Everybody that lives within a two or
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: three mile radios can get in the storm shelter and
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: get out of the way of that storm. I'd say
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: I have a model is that Mother Nature is undefeated.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: She's undefeated. You can't fight her. The only thing you
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: can do is get the hell out of her way.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: And by constructing these shelter staffs what we do, and
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: we've been very successful at it UM. I have another
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: charity for the alumni of my university where we raise
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: money for different charities of the university that I put
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: on that East Lake Country Club. I have a charity
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: in Chicago that's called both Jackson's Give Me a Chance
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: Foundation where we um where the foundation it benefits inner
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: city us. We want the inner city use to learn
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: sports through education, which means and in order to be
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: a part of our group, you gotta make the grades.
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: In order to be a member at my sports complex,
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: you gotta make the grades. First. You gotta carry yourself
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: in a manner in which which is proper to be
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: a part of my group. We have rap sessions. We
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: have this We teach kids from the inside out not
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: only to how to be an athlete, but also how
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: to be a respectable teenager a young adult. And we've
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: sent over thirty kids to college in the past ten years.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: So that's Those are some of the philanthropic things that
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: I do. You any questions, what's your go to hunt
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: every year? What's to hunt? Like? Is there a hunt
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: you don't miss? Uh? I just love hunting. I can
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: hunt anything. I can hunt anything. Um um, do you
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: prefer like big game over small game? Big game? Small game?
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: It doesn't matter right now, A buddy and I we
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: are planning a trip to the Yukon or four to
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: hunt moose and probably to hunt moose and bear or
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: moose and caribou, whichever comes first. UM take a week
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: and a half two weeks ago up to do that
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: and um, but around around the continental United States. I'll
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: hunt anything. So did your family like to eat wild game?
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: If I don't tell him what it is, they don't ask.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Well my oldest son, Well, my kids will try anything,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: but my wife no, No, my kids will eat anything.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: You got to trick your wife or what you got
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: a trigger? I don't trigger. Yes, is that wild game? Yes? Here,
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: she's not having it. But no, no, I cook the
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: only the only the only thing that's from the wild
- 1:24:10Speaker 1: that she would eat is fish. Is fish. Yes, So,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: but everything else I have actually I have actually cooked everything.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: I've actually cooked everything from raccoon to you name it. Um.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: I had a buddy that I played with for the
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: Raiders that I played with with the Raiders. He was
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: a receiver named Chris Woods. He came over for Christmas
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: since my first year with the Raiders, and we invited
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: him over for New Year's. He and his wife and
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: his in his and his son. We invite him over
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: to our little little house in Auburn for for New
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Year's and down south for New Year's. It's a custom
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: in the black community, especially the older community. Um Um,
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: you should you, but you cook or smoke a raccoon
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: for New Year's and you have black eyed peas for
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: good luck. And I learned that from my grandfather. And
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: I went out week before harvested a raccoon down in
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: my buddy's place, down at my coaches. My coaches are
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: rants adds far harvest a raccoon and clean it up
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: real nice. I got the little smoker that that I
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: got to where you got the fire in the water
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: and the grilled put all my put apple juice, water,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: put all my fruits and everything in there and let
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: it and kept water in that pan and cooked. And
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I took that raccoon. I seasoned it but potatoes, sweet potatoes,
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: and the cavity, put a bunch of basketbles in it,
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: wrapped with nylon cord, and smoked that raccoon on that
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: smoker for about six hours, and kept that and kept
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: and kept liquid in that pan which moisturized at meat,
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: which made it tender. And when I when I served
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: it to my buddy, who was never eating wal game
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: before in this life, he thought it was roastby. He
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: thought it was roastby. And my wife looked at him
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: bed because the first thing that he said, please tell
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: me what I'm eating, because my wife was looking at
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: him like, if you knew what you were eating, you
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: would be eating. And he was sitting there eating that
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: black eyed peas had colored greens and corn bread and
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: stuffing and all of that, and he said, and my
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: wife told him what he was eating. And he looked
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: at me and said, you got me eating what? Because
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: he's countries a corn bread sandwich. And he said it's good,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: and he ate more. And he and I sit there
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: in the eight three quarters that racoon for New Year's
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: so so so. And but people that that haven't tried
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: something and they automatically dislike it, they shouldn't. They should
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: try it first. I said, always try it before you
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: always try it before. You say. You cook a lot
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: of traditional Southern black dishes. I cook so food, I
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: cook Italian food, I cook you name it, I cook it. Yeah,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: do you still keep that tradition? New Year's tradition now. Yeah,
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: Actually I am at war with well, I used to
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: be at war. I used to think of raccoon right
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: out of mine, right out of my backyard because I
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: have this show. Yeah in the gated community. Um um.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: I have a dought that have two fons behind my
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: house every year, and during the winner, I kind of
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: feel sorry for him. So I put corn out for
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: and they come up and eat, But the raccoons come
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: up and run them off, and they all eat five
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: gallons of corn in one night. There's just that meaning,
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: right coon. So I remedied that. So you did some
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: control work, pa, mm hmm, I got I got another
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: question for you, and then let you get back to
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: your turkey hunt. Unless these boys got your fun. You
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: can have any follow up thoughts too, Do you okay
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: the um? Is it still fun? Or have you grown
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: tired of bo knows? Is it still fun? That's a
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: money maker, man talking about a money maker. Yeah, that's
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: a money maker because we like, you know, we're like, oh,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: bodos turkeys boos. That's a money maker. Yeah. So it's
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: still music to your money maker. Yeah. Yeah, it's when
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: I was on my laptop there earlier before we start
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: this I was luskin over uh contract with boos and
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: it that's a money maker. You better recognize that's great
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: Matt guy. You guys got your follow up thoughts. No,
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: you know, everybody's got buddies that show up and they
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: don't have boats or they forget their glow officer or whatever.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: You know, it's a pleasure hunting with bowling, hunting, fishing
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: because he's always got the right gear, shows up, ready
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: for ready for game time. So I think that's worth recognizing.
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: We've done We've had a lot of adventures together and uh,
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: he's a fun guy to spend time with. Thanks for coming.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: See the reason he is complimented me because I drove
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: him up here and Dodge, so it was like a
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: two hours. It was like driving this daisy. I'm Hope
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: and he's Daisy and he's just talking and talking and talk.
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: He Uh he mentioned that you, um at times drove
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: a little aggressively. Oh yeah, he drives fast. That would
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: have been the word. Yeah. Yeah, it's a brand This
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: is a brand new Dodge, uh comings turbo diesel. I
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: barely got fifteen hundred miles on it. Let's see what
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: the thing can do. Before I put a new chip
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: in it. Yeah, so I'm just breaking into the end
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: before I put the new chip in the big rexhault On,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: it can breathe better. That's all I got. I got
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: any questions. I just want to say it's been a
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: pleasure hunting with you so far. Thank you. I'm gonna
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: try to get my style back tonight. Right now, how
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: the mighty phones? Right now? Guy is over, He is over.
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: He swung to miss eight times this morning. I did
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: scare the hell out every turkey we have on the phone.
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: You gotta give me that one. Then you got, you
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: got the concluders. Any final thoughts bout do you want
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: to wedge in there? Do you haven't got a chance
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: to wedge in anything? Man? Oh? What? Oh? No? Live
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: life to the fullest, be happy, and I always your
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: commencement address. Team, Step outside your comfort zone, step outside
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: your compat zone. Do something that you would not orinary.
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: I tell people, do something nice for a stranger, do
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: something nice for somebody that you don't know. Period. I've
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: seen him do that multiple times, even in Spain. So
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: he practices what he preaches. What's what's an example that
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: you do to like completely just random like that? You're
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: in Spain and you pick out a stranger, tell the
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: story about we were in Spain and where we on
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: our way to Portano or we had come back. No,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: we were on our way there. I think you're right
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: where we This was the night before and we went
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: out and we were on our way there, and we
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: went by the local McDonald's there, which is a whole
- 1:31:36Speaker 1: lot different than our McDonald's here, and there was a
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: that was an elderly lady singal there and for some reason,
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: she reminded me of my mother and she and she
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: was just sitting there, and she had coffee and she
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: was just sipping on her coffee, and she was just
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: sitting there. And I didn't know if she was homeless
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: or what. So I didn't speak Spanish. But but Jose
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: that was with the who was another McDonald's exact um.
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: I was talking to him and I told him, but
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I said, there's something about that lady that's parting me.
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: And I said, will you go over and ask her,
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: um and just tell her and tell her that she
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: reminds me of my mother and I would like to
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: buy her her dinner for night. So he went over
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: and told her, and she said, oh oh, and in
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: a very sweet voice, she told him in Spanish that
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: she was waiting for her daughter and her daughter was late.
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: Her daughter was late, and she had been sitting there
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: for about forty five minutes. And UM, I said, well,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I will buy you dinner. I will buy you and
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: your daughter dinner. And I said, we will stay here
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: until your daughter comes to make sure that you get dinner.
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: And I don't know, I think I think I gave her.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I think I gave him a hundred dollars to give
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: to her. So she and her daughter and by dinner.
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: And it just reminded and I got emotional. I don't
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: know if I'm in my old age, that I'm going
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: through menopause or what, but I I'm serious. And and
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: she reminded me a lot of my mother and this
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: lady in Spain that that I'll probably never see you again,
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: probably never meet again, older ladies like she was in
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: her seventies. And I just I just bought her dinner,
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: and she said thank you, and we got up in
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: left with our daughter. Game. So it's it's just simple things.
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: Some simple things you have to um if you have
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: been blessed, it's only right for you to play it
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: for play it forward to somebody. So that's life, thank you.
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: That's the bubble that I live in. It's a big bubble.
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: Now let's go harvest to Turkey guy. Thank you very much,
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Bo Jackson. By going on the show,
