- 0:04we are not ai we are here live
- 0:06today yes we got a show
- 0:21I love the chase and the hunt and
- 0:22I set the pace when I'm running.
- 0:24I always take what I want and I
- 0:26always give it one hundred.
- 0:27Don't need a bank, no I'm funded.
- 0:28Play the game like it's nothing.
- 0:30I'm always thankful for something.
- 0:31Don't take for granted, stay humble.
- 0:33Now wake up!
- 0:34It's time to look at the enemy.
- 0:37Look in the mirror if he is no
- 0:39friend to me.
- 0:40It's not working out,
- 0:41maybe it's the chemistry.
- 0:42It's time to...
- 0:50It's lunch time.
- 0:53What's up, everyone?
- 0:54Jumped in today to do the show.
- 0:56Saw all the chats from yesterday.
- 0:59Huge apology for me.
- 1:02Last minute,
- 1:03I was asked to jump into a meeting
- 1:05and present.
- 1:07And that meeting went two hours.
- 1:09There was no way to do the show
- 1:10yesterday.
- 1:11So I frantically jumped in,
- 1:14changed the date of the show,
- 1:16tried to get everything out,
- 1:17tried to get an Instagram post out,
- 1:20all of that stuff.
- 1:23um so yeah i tried to get all
- 1:25that out but i see that yeah uh
- 1:28jody yes your chat from yesterday is still
- 1:30in here uh because it's still connected to
- 1:33this broadcast um so yeah jumped in today
- 1:38checked it all out tried to get everything
- 1:40out to everybody my apologies that we
- 1:42weren't here yesterday uh but that doesn't
- 1:45happen on the regular and i'll try to
- 1:48make sure it doesn't happen very much in
- 1:50the future
- 1:51So we've got Craig in the chat.
- 1:53We got Jody.
- 1:55We got Kenneth the lap.
- 1:56We got Frida.
- 1:58We've got Ken Walters eating some bison
- 2:00burgers today with avocado and sweet
- 2:03taters.
- 2:04I just was telling someone yesterday that
- 2:06you eat ribeye every day.
- 2:08Now you've called me a liar, Ken.
- 2:10What am I supposed to do now?
- 2:13I thought it was only ribeyes and here
- 2:15you are eating bison burgers.
- 2:19Yeah,
- 2:19I got to see my first bison in
- 2:21the wild last year,
- 2:24heading out to Montana.
- 2:26Those are some big, big dogs, man.
- 2:32I don't know.
- 2:32I've probably had the meat before.
- 2:35I've tried a lot of different things.
- 2:40I've had elk.
- 2:41I've had moose.
- 2:42I've had bear.
- 2:44I think I've had bison.
- 2:47Um, it's gotta be like a,
- 2:48what a really lean burger, right?
- 2:50Ken got my partner,
- 2:54Carolyn Prevost in the house, uh,
- 2:56lesson prepping.
- 3:01I don't know if you guys saw,
- 3:02I can't remember the exact stat,
- 3:04but like her and Jeff Adler are the
- 3:05only people that have finished top
- 3:08whatever in the open over the last five
- 3:11years.
- 3:12Can't remember the exact stat,
- 3:14but it's pretty cool.
- 3:17That's elite company right there.
- 3:19Carolyn Prevost, Jeff Adler.
- 3:20Pretty amazing.
- 3:25Frida,
- 3:25what was the smash burger for her with
- 3:27some sriracha mayo, pepper jack cheese,
- 3:31and so on.
- 3:33Like me, some sriracha mayo.
- 3:35That's good.
- 3:37Mark Phillips homeschooling a
- 3:38fourteen-year-old, but he's here.
- 3:41Ah,
- 3:42top-fifty over the last seven years it
- 3:44was.
- 3:44Thank you, Karen.
- 3:46Yeah, that's pretty elite company.
- 3:47Seven years of consistency.
- 3:49Top-fifty in the open.
- 3:52Yeah, huge kudos to you and Jeff, both.
- 3:54Man, that is freaking amazing.
- 4:00Must be something in the Canadian water.
- 4:05Jody's driving.
- 4:07Be safe.
- 4:07Ten and two.
- 4:08Hands ten and two.
- 4:09Come on.
- 4:10Make sure.
- 4:13All right.
- 4:14So let's get into it today.
- 4:15It's a Friday before a three-day weekend
- 4:18for me.
- 4:19So super stoked about that.
- 4:22Just got out of an interview or an
- 4:24interview,
- 4:24a meeting where we were redistributed our
- 4:27job duties today.
- 4:29So recovering from that turned out okay
- 4:33for me, I think.
- 4:36Not ideal, but it's never ideal.
- 4:38So I will take what we get and
- 4:40we'll move on.
- 4:43Earlier this week on Wednesday,
- 4:45and we haven't had a show since then,
- 4:47they announced twenty six point two.
- 4:51And who are going to be the athletes
- 4:53representing CrossFit at that open
- 4:55announcement?
- 4:56And here you go.
- 4:57CrossFit Open starts now.
- 5:01And the Queen's Slayer, Lucy Campbell,
- 5:04takes down another one.
- 5:06They are not first off the skier.
- 5:07It is Amy Kringle.
- 5:08Kringle is done and on to the box.
- 5:09Miriam Von Roar.
- 5:11Someone forgot to tell her she's a rookie.
- 5:13She came out of those blocks like a
- 5:15full-born sprinter.
- 5:21That is one great lineup.
- 5:25Lucy Campbell, Amy Kringle,
- 5:27and Miriam Von Roar will be your athletes
- 5:29for twenty six point two.
- 5:32Super stoked about that.
- 5:36The sneaky the sneaky one in here is
- 5:38if you guys have not been following
- 5:39closely is Miriam Von Roar has won the
- 5:42last two open.
- 5:44The last two.
- 5:45Oh,
- 5:45she is the Colton Mertens of the female
- 5:47division.
- 5:50So great lineup,
- 5:52super stoked to see them go down,
- 5:54throw down.
- 5:55It's going to be awesome.
- 5:58We've got two great lineups to start open
- 6:01announcements one and two.
- 6:04Now the ball is in CrossFit's court to
- 6:06hit a grand slam.
- 6:08and have a great lineup for workout three.
- 6:12And it's probably going to be at
- 6:13Wadapalooza, I'm assuming.
- 6:15It is going to be at Wadapalooza.
- 6:17So they're going to have a lot of
- 6:19people there to do it.
- 6:22I wonder if it's going to be like
- 6:24a heat of the event or if it's
- 6:27going to be truly like just pick a
- 6:30couple people to do it.
- 6:33That's going to be interesting how they
- 6:35pull that one off.
- 6:36As it is going to be one of
- 6:39the events at Wadapalooza,
- 6:44it's going to be fun to see.
- 6:46So can't wait to see what they do
- 6:48with that open lineup.
- 6:51Early on,
- 6:51I've got Miriam Von Rohr to win.
- 6:53She wins everything in the Open.
- 6:57And Carolyn points out here,
- 6:58she has won three of the last six
- 7:01WODs in the Open.
- 7:03Again, just like Colton Mertens.
- 7:05Colton Mertens has won a lot of the
- 7:08Open workouts in the last two years.
- 7:11So she is very much as savage as
- 7:16Colton Mertens is in the Open.
- 7:18And then you've got Lucy Campbell,
- 7:20who took fourth in the Open last year.
- 7:23And Amy Kringle, top fifteen, I think,
- 7:26at least.
- 7:27This is a killer lineup for this.
- 7:29Killer.
- 7:37Twenty-six point three will have to be
- 7:38short since volunteers will be allowed to
- 7:40do it as well.
- 7:46Yeah, I mean,
- 7:47no open workout is super long.
- 7:51I shouldn't say no.
- 7:55But, yeah, I don't know.
- 7:58I don't know, Stan,
- 7:59what they're going to do there.
- 8:01Hopefully,
- 8:02they give you enough time off where you
- 8:03can just go do it,
- 8:04regardless of the time.
- 8:09So...
- 8:11So, yeah, it's all lining up.
- 8:13You know, open registrations are way,
- 8:15way up, which is a great thing.
- 8:18The open announcements that they have
- 8:20released are incredible.
- 8:23I think excitement is growing.
- 8:26Hopefully we can get that foundation,
- 8:28that base set again for another growth
- 8:31spurt in the sport and hopefully get
- 8:35through unscathed for a while.
- 8:44I'm curious how teams will do the workouts
- 8:46on week three and how they get to
- 8:48set up their stuff.
- 8:50So, Carolyn,
- 8:51the workouts will be released on Thursday.
- 8:54Guadalupalooza is individual Thursday and
- 8:56Friday, and then the teams are Saturday,
- 9:00Sunday.
- 9:03So, I'm assuming that if they do...
- 9:10I wonder if they're going to make it
- 9:12a team event or just in the individual
- 9:14events.
- 9:20Wayne points out that twenty six point two
- 9:22is that an affiliate with four hundred and
- 9:23fifty members doing the open should be
- 9:27amazing.
- 9:27That is ridiculous.
- 9:32There are very few gyms with four hundred
- 9:34and fifty members,
- 9:35let alone four hundred and fifty doing the
- 9:37open.
- 9:43Insane.
- 9:43Insane.
- 9:44I can't wait to see what Wadapalooza is
- 9:46going to do with it.
- 9:47Hopefully they have a good plan and have
- 9:50been working in depth with CrossFit to
- 9:52make it work out.
- 9:56So we'll see.
- 10:00In addition to this,
- 10:00I wanted to kind of bust this out
- 10:03too,
- 10:04is I was watching the spin on Wednesday
- 10:06night.
- 10:07We talked about it briefly on our Tuesday
- 10:09show where Tyler had put out a video
- 10:13talking about...
- 10:15us the state of the open and that
- 10:18the biggest asset to affiliates uh was
- 10:22regionals and that we should find a way
- 10:24to go back to regionals and use the
- 10:28money that they want to hand out gift
- 10:29cards with to supplement the cost of
- 10:33regionals um
- 10:42jason bourne has been doing some spy
- 10:44activity for us and the twenty six point
- 10:49three will have its own stage at
- 10:50wadapalooza um carolyn says those gyms
- 10:57probably charge an extra twenty dollars on
- 10:59membership and it automatically goes to
- 11:01their open sign up smart moves yeah it's
- 11:10a good way to do it
- 11:16When you look at the retention numbers of
- 11:18improvement in the open, as a gym owner,
- 11:20it's almost worth the investment to just
- 11:24pay the twenty dollars.
- 11:26Pay the twenty dollars for your athletes.
- 11:29Sign them up.
- 11:31Especially with where you could buy in
- 11:33bulk this year.
- 11:34Sign them up.
- 11:38It's twenty dollars a member out of their
- 11:40membership.
- 11:40And then it because the retention numbers
- 11:44of people who do the open multiple times
- 11:47is so high that maybe that is a
- 11:50way that you can retain who you have.
- 11:56But I want to get to the regionals
- 11:58aspect of it and the feasibility of it.
- 12:01You know,
- 12:01Tyler said that one of the best assets
- 12:04that CrossFit ever gave to the affiliates
- 12:06was regionals.
- 12:07And I do not disagree.
- 12:09Every regionals I attended, and granted,
- 12:12I was spoiled.
- 12:13I live in the Central East.
- 12:16I was a part of the combined North
- 12:19Central and Central East into the Central
- 12:21Regional.
- 12:22Every one of those regionals was
- 12:25jam-packed every single year.
- 12:31It was never in an arena.
- 12:34It was always in a convention center.
- 12:38Now,
- 12:38the build-outs were pretty big in both
- 12:40Nashville and Columbus.
- 12:43It wasn't an arena in Cincinnati when it
- 12:45was Central East,
- 12:47and it still packed the house.
- 12:54Is it affordable to do regionals again?
- 12:58And I know they talked about like
- 13:00supplementing it with the twenty percent
- 13:02that goes to prizes for affiliates from
- 13:05the open.
- 13:06Take that twenty percent and lump it into
- 13:10regionals.
- 13:12I would contend and I want to and
- 13:14I'm going to ask some event owners,
- 13:17event runners.
- 13:21Would they rather host a regional where
- 13:25they have the ability to host that and
- 13:29foot the bill and make the profits from
- 13:32that or to continue to do a semifinal?
- 13:37And I think your answers are going to
- 13:39be varied in this way.
- 13:41Someone like NorCal,
- 13:43who has established this festival feel,
- 13:47I think will want to continue on with
- 13:50their festival feel and not limit
- 13:52themselves to a regional.
- 13:56Someone like Wilson Park...
- 13:59where it is really just the elites
- 14:01competing that weekend,
- 14:03I think would jump at the chance to
- 14:06change the format from an overall
- 14:09semifinal to a regionalized regional
- 14:12competition where you're drawing from the
- 14:15local affiliates to come cheer on their
- 14:17people.
- 14:21And if you can get the buy-in from
- 14:23the third parties to host these types of
- 14:26events,
- 14:28I think it's a no-brainer to go back
- 14:30to regionals.
- 14:34This is just me pondering the idea and
- 14:36not really talking to anybody yet.
- 14:39But over the next week or so,
- 14:40I'm going to start talking to people.
- 14:42And I'm going to find out what would
- 14:45they rather do.
- 14:48Because if you can get the support of
- 14:50third-party event coordinators knowing
- 14:54that they're going to pull directly from
- 14:56the athletes in the region and the
- 14:59affiliates in the region,
- 15:01would they jump at that chance?
- 15:05as opposed to the newer semifinal where
- 15:09it's just,
- 15:11we don't know if people are going to
- 15:13show up.
- 15:14Are they going to withdraw last minute if
- 15:15they qualified an early one?
- 15:17Or do we lose them at this one?
- 15:20Is it worth buying the tickets for this
- 15:22because you don't know who's really going
- 15:23to be there?
- 15:25Where at regionals, it was your shot.
- 15:27It was your one shot.
- 15:29And people knew who was going to be
- 15:31there.
- 15:35and so ticket sales were easier to predict
- 15:39because you knew the lineup before you
- 15:41even got there um carolyn says it's just
- 15:55so hard to make it to the games
- 15:57now as an indie or team
- 15:59People in the younger age groups who used
- 16:01to have a chance to go to regionals
- 16:03don't have a huge chance anymore.
- 16:05Numbers are down.
- 16:07But I think if you recreated that and
- 16:09you gave a goal of making regionals,
- 16:12it gives that intermediate goal of just
- 16:18trying to make it to that regional event
- 16:21and getting to compete on a bigger stage.
- 16:25It's still a semi-local competition
- 16:27because you're in a smaller region,
- 16:33but it's a big enough stage where there's
- 16:35some broadcast,
- 16:36there's some people that are doing
- 16:38interviews,
- 16:39and it gives it that I've made it
- 16:41at least this far.
- 16:46Now,
- 16:47I know the elites are going to say,
- 16:49that means I've got to perform my best
- 16:51on one weekend.
- 16:53I can't be sick that weekend.
- 16:56All of those things that we've talked
- 16:57about.
- 16:59But we need the whole ecosystem to still
- 17:03be around for you to thrive in this
- 17:06system.
- 17:09And so maybe you have to give up
- 17:12the multiple shots at making the games for
- 17:15the opportunity to grow and have a sport
- 17:20available to you moving forward.
- 17:25Wayne says regionals would be awesome.
- 17:28I do think you would see athletes at
- 17:30the big camps relocating to spread the
- 17:32competition out.
- 17:33The Southeast region would be crazy as is.
- 17:38I mean, that's possible.
- 17:39People did it before.
- 17:43So people moved around,
- 17:45but you have to remember in the old
- 17:47regional days,
- 17:47five people made it from the regionals,
- 17:50not three, not two, but five.
- 17:54So there were more opportunities at that
- 17:57level.
- 18:00Whether they would go back to that or
- 18:02they still want the smaller field at the
- 18:04games, I don't know.
- 18:12Frida said,
- 18:12some athletes will complain about the
- 18:14competition only having so and so many
- 18:16places.
- 18:19I agree with you.
- 18:19People are going to complain about that.
- 18:21But if you don't have a sport there
- 18:23left because nobody's coming to watch
- 18:27anymore, is that an alternative?
- 18:30It's not.
- 18:33Tristan says,
- 18:33the regional system is the best for growth
- 18:36of the ecosystem hands down.
- 18:40Carolyn, I agree.
- 18:41I just think unless there's something like
- 18:43regionals again,
- 18:44we are losing a huge market of athletes
- 18:46who are going elsewhere for comps like
- 18:48High Rocks because it's achievable and a
- 18:51big competition.
- 18:53Yeah, I see what you're saying now.
- 18:55The regionals does give that opportunity
- 18:57to younger athletes to develop.
- 19:03And because there were like thirty teams
- 19:06per region,
- 19:07you could even go on a team
- 19:10And learn that way or get your feet
- 19:13wet that way or experience things that
- 19:16way.
- 19:19Andrew Sten,
- 19:20will athletes be willing to look
- 19:22long-term?
- 19:23People often look at what affects them
- 19:25now.
- 19:26I think that's the problem in a lot
- 19:28of sports.
- 19:29When you look at like labor unrest in
- 19:31the NFL and the OGs are telling the
- 19:35young athletes hang in there during the
- 19:37strike because it means a lot.
- 19:40And then basically the young athletes are
- 19:44spending their money and they need to get
- 19:46back to work to sustain themselves because
- 19:49they weren't disciplined in like saving
- 19:51money, things like that.
- 19:53And it's why the NFL PA doesn't have
- 19:55any strength because those younger
- 19:59athletes don't have the patience and the
- 20:03ability to wait it out.
- 20:14Um, hexi lover.
- 20:18So excited to know how you was your
- 20:20first big blowy.
- 20:22Uh, sorry for off the topic,
- 20:24but want to know the joy you hopefully
- 20:26had.
- 20:27Uh, it was pretty glorious,
- 20:30but there's a weird side effect to it
- 20:32that I just wasn't expecting.
- 20:35So like I blew everything out and it
- 20:38felt so good and I can breathe so
- 20:40deep that
- 20:41The crazy piece, though,
- 20:43is there are parts of my sinuses that
- 20:45haven't had air in so long that when
- 20:49I breathe in, it tickles those areas.
- 20:53And then I have to sneeze.
- 20:55And I'm sure that once it gets used
- 20:59to having air in there again,
- 21:01it'll be fine.
- 21:03But right now,
- 21:04it just tickles when I breathe in real
- 21:07deep into the areas that were so impacted
- 21:11that I'm just forcing myself to sneeze a
- 21:17lot.
- 21:20All right, back to Frida.
- 21:22Andrew,
- 21:22that's the problem with basically the
- 21:23entire society.
- 21:24Yes.
- 21:25Yes, there is no patience.
- 21:27There is no looking at the big picture.
- 21:29It's all about right now.
- 21:37Plant-powered fitness.
- 21:38The question I have is,
- 21:39are the young people in CrossFit?
- 21:42If the average age of a member in
- 21:43the gym is higher,
- 21:44then you will see that in the signups.
- 21:53Yeah, I think, though,
- 21:54if opportunities exist for higher and
- 21:59young athletes,
- 22:01you'll see some of them come back to
- 22:02this format.
- 22:06The reason that everything's skewing
- 22:07upward is there are no opportunities for
- 22:10young athletes.
- 22:12I agree with Carolyn on that.
- 22:14Right now,
- 22:14the way it's set up and everything,
- 22:17all these semifinals are invitation only
- 22:20or you've got to do this qualifier and
- 22:22the spaces are limited and all this stuff.
- 22:25The young athletes are getting pushed to
- 22:27the side and there are no opportunities
- 22:30for them.
- 22:32Where if you do the regionals again,
- 22:35it opens up a big window for younger
- 22:38athletes to have a goal,
- 22:40to make it to regionals,
- 22:42get themselves known,
- 22:43and to move forward through the process of
- 22:46becoming an athlete.
- 22:50And again,
- 22:51I can't wait to talk to some of
- 22:53the event organizers because I do believe
- 22:55that
- 22:56that they will enjoy the opportunity of
- 22:59having a regional type event to run,
- 23:02I think they can be more successful with
- 23:04that than the current format.
- 23:13But I will find out over the next
- 23:16few weeks for sure.
- 23:21Before I forget,
- 23:22tomorrow is the last day to get thirty
- 23:25percent off your third order.
- 23:28They are running their self-care thirty.
- 23:32And that's thirty percent off for
- 23:33Valentine's Day.
- 23:36In order to be the best partner you
- 23:38can.
- 23:39for your spouse,
- 23:40for your significant other,
- 23:42for your partner,
- 23:43is to be the best person you can
- 23:45be.
- 23:45And the best way to do that is
- 23:46to get a good night's sleep and recover.
- 23:49And you can do that using Thirdsy and
- 23:51get thirty percent off if you spend eighty
- 23:53five at Thirdsy.com backslash Jazzy.
- 23:56That's Thirdsy.com backslash Jazzy.
- 24:01Use code Jazzy at checkout.
- 24:03Get thirty percent off your order.
- 24:05through tomorrow.
- 24:07Tomorrow's the last day.
- 24:08Make sure you take advantage of that.
- 24:13It's hard to get an athlete to commit
- 24:15to a three-year plan to potentially make a
- 24:17semifinal.
- 24:19Yeah,
- 24:19I think the regionals really just sets the
- 24:22goals up in a way that makes sense
- 24:25for a younger athlete, Tristan.
- 24:28To make top-forty in your region is much
- 24:34more doable than the way the semifinals
- 24:38are set up today.
- 24:41Because in semifinals,
- 24:43you have to be the top...
- 24:47twenty at this qualifier you had to have
- 24:50done well last year to get an invite
- 24:53and in the numbers or you have to
- 24:54finish much much higher in those instances
- 24:58where regionals just in your area of the
- 25:01world you have to be one of the
- 25:04twenty or forty best people in that region
- 25:08and that is those numbers are much more
- 25:10doable for a young athlete uh than what
- 25:13we have set up today
- 25:19And anybody who can make a semifinal now
- 25:21would walk into a regional of top forty
- 25:23or fifty.
- 25:24Of course.
- 25:25Of course.
- 25:30Of course.
- 25:33Yeah.
- 25:38And I am not the guy that likes
- 25:40to go backward to move forward,
- 25:43but it just makes too much sense not
- 25:45to.
- 25:48I am not the guy typically that says,
- 25:49hey, let's go back to this.
- 25:52But regionals just makes the most sense.
- 25:57Look at the growth in CrossFit during the
- 25:59regionals era.
- 26:01Now, I know there are all these factors.
- 26:03There was the media firing.
- 26:05There was Greg leaving.
- 26:06There was COVID.
- 26:08There was Lazar's death.
- 26:09All of those things since twenty eighteen
- 26:11have happened to in addition to getting
- 26:14rid of regionals.
- 26:16to mess up what's happened.
- 26:22But I think you have to find something
- 26:24to get us back to a foundation that
- 26:27works.
- 26:28And the one thing that we have control
- 26:30over is to go back to a regionals
- 26:32format.
- 26:41Frida says it's the opportunity that is
- 26:43the appeal here.
- 26:43Yes.
- 26:44Yes.
- 26:48Uh, Vicki says restore to homeostasis.
- 26:51Exactly.
- 26:52And the other piece that I'm going to
- 26:55talk to Carolyn about this Sunday night,
- 26:57cause it's her idea.
- 26:59I've just, I just love it.
- 27:00And I keep running with it is in
- 27:02addition to the regional format,
- 27:04you keep quarterfinals one.
- 27:08It's a great moneymaker too.
- 27:12It gives you the ability to semi create
- 27:15a five week open.
- 27:18If you're going back to regionals,
- 27:19you need to take the open three weeks
- 27:22and the quarterfinal weekend,
- 27:24mash them together,
- 27:26and those standings are what get you to
- 27:29the regional.
- 27:31It's a more complete test using all of
- 27:34those pieces to then get you to regionals.
- 27:42Instead of scrapping the scores from the
- 27:44open, they carry over to quarterfinals,
- 27:47and then you test doing multiple events in
- 27:51one weekend as part of your test to
- 27:54get to regionals.
- 27:58So step one, open.
- 27:59Step two, quarterfinals.
- 28:01Combine those scores.
- 28:03Top forty in your region.
- 28:06Move on to regionals.
- 28:11And there you have a complete online test
- 28:15that moves to a complete in-person test
- 28:19that moves on to the games.
- 28:24And then everything is tested.
- 28:25Everything,
- 28:26we have a nice balanced test across the
- 28:29board.
- 28:33And we keep it local enough where
- 28:36affiliates and people who want to support
- 28:38their athletes can come watch.
- 28:49and and it's been demonstrated if you
- 28:52weren't around in the regional days uh it
- 29:00was demonstrated a lot that these gym
- 29:03members would come and it would get so
- 29:05loud i remember here in columbus we had
- 29:09two local teams
- 29:11in regionals and the place got so loud
- 29:15when they were competing CrossFit
- 29:17Grandview and Friendship CrossFit both
- 29:20competed at regionals both made it into
- 29:23the top ten in the final heat and
- 29:25the place was so loud for the final
- 29:27heat of teams that
- 29:30It was like nothing you have heard since
- 29:32because nobody comes to watch the teams
- 29:34now.
- 29:36But here, because it's local,
- 29:38because you have members of your gym in
- 29:40it,
- 29:41it gets as loud as the individual event.
- 29:46And the teams bring so many people to
- 29:49the game, so many people to the party.
- 29:53When I was at Syndicate,
- 29:56And Haley Adams is there because she's
- 29:58local to Cookville.
- 30:00The place is super loud.
- 30:03It was last year,
- 30:04Austin Hatfield was there,
- 30:06and it was so loud every time Austin
- 30:08took the floor because it was local for
- 30:11him and his gym members.
- 30:18So the evidence is that it still happens.
- 30:22It just happens to a lesser degree because
- 30:24not so many people are not local.
- 30:32David Reed,
- 30:33how many boxes have a competitive team
- 30:34training group?
- 30:35Granville still has it,
- 30:36but I suspect most do not.
- 30:39Because they didn't have a chance anymore,
- 30:41David.
- 30:41I think that if you bring back regionals,
- 30:44more local affiliates feel like they can
- 30:48get into the mix of a regional event
- 30:51where they couldn't a semifinal event.
- 30:58Wayne says,
- 30:59I remember watching a teen Sam Kwan at
- 31:01Northeast Regional.
- 31:02It was so loud.
- 31:03Is any comp amazing?
- 31:05Yeah.
- 31:06Northwest.
- 31:06You're right.
- 31:08Correction, Northwest.
- 31:11Carolyn,
- 31:13talking about combining the open with the
- 31:14quarterfinals,
- 31:15and you look at a few videos for
- 31:17the top qualifier athletes like they used
- 31:20to qualify to regionals.
- 31:23For that leaderboard,
- 31:23you combine the scores of only the
- 31:25athletes who do both open and quarters.
- 31:29Correct.
- 31:34David Reed,
- 31:35Grandview has their training group,
- 31:37and you have to hit benchmarks to even
- 31:39train with them.
- 31:42It used to be cutthroat at Grandview,
- 31:44and I'm sure it still is.
- 31:45They're still trying to get teams to the
- 31:47games.
- 31:48But if they had regionals, many,
- 31:51many more gyms would try to put together
- 31:53teams.
- 31:55Many more.
- 31:56Because it's a realistic opportunity for
- 31:58them to get to regionals.
- 32:00It's not realistic for many of these gyms
- 32:02to make it to a semifinal.
- 32:05And with the super teams,
- 32:07it's not even worth trying.
- 32:18Uh,
- 32:18Ken is asking if Karen was playing hooky
- 32:20today, I believe not bookie.
- 32:22I don't think she takes bets.
- 32:23Ken.
- 32:24Um, she said she's lesson planning.
- 32:26So I think she's just in an office
- 32:28working on her lesson plan.
- 32:33Um,
- 32:37Frida regionals was something of a
- 32:38maturing thing for athletes where you got
- 32:41the chance to really test where you are
- 32:43in comparison with, with the elite.
- 32:46And if you listen to the stories of
- 32:49the athletes that got to go out on
- 32:50the floor and the people they had next
- 32:53to them,
- 32:55like when we did the hundred and some
- 32:59semifinal interviews back in the day,
- 33:02like I would hear stories of,
- 33:04I got to go out on the floor
- 33:06and Katrin David's daughter's beside me.
- 33:08Or, you know,
- 33:09Rich Froning was in my heat or so
- 33:12on and so forth, right?
- 33:15You got to go experience things and have
- 33:18that amazing experience of competing on
- 33:21this big stage with the big names.
- 33:23It meant a lot.
- 33:26And that has been completely
- 33:27underestimated.
- 33:32David Reed,
- 33:32I do like the idea of an accumulative
- 33:34score to make the games,
- 33:35make each step of the ladder matter.
- 33:38And it only makes sense, David,
- 33:40because you hear like Dave Castro go,
- 33:43the entire season is a story.
- 33:46Why release that story in volumes and
- 33:51start over from the beginning when you can
- 33:54just keep the story flowing with the
- 33:56scores as well?
- 34:01And it totally makes sense when we cut
- 34:03down to a three-week open,
- 34:05it's so hard to get a complete test.
- 34:07You know,
- 34:09our friend Larry Young is on here all
- 34:12the time talking about lack of strength
- 34:13test.
- 34:15If you had three weeks of the open
- 34:17and a weekend of multiple events in
- 34:19quarterfinals and all those scores get
- 34:21combined,
- 34:22you can throw in a strength event and
- 34:24it doesn't bias it as much.
- 34:28You can do those things and test those
- 34:30things.
- 34:31So it matters.
- 34:34Right now,
- 34:35when you do three events and you throw
- 34:37in a strength test,
- 34:38it's too big of a bias to the
- 34:40rest of the testing.
- 34:47But if you have seven events,
- 34:49three from the open, four from quarters,
- 34:52now you have a seven-event test that you
- 34:55can truly test who should make it to
- 34:58the next level.
- 35:06I think that truly makes the most sense.
- 35:13And then we look at the cost.
- 35:15Tyler brought it up in his video.
- 35:18Back in the day,
- 35:18it was a million dollars to put those
- 35:20on.
- 35:21Hamilton Roads was there doing the
- 35:24broadcast for every regional.
- 35:27Now there are people out there that can
- 35:28do the broadcast for much, much less.
- 35:32We don't need to have the big arenas
- 35:34in every regional.
- 35:36There are some regionals that we know are
- 35:38going to draw and some we know are
- 35:40not.
- 35:41And you can play to the area you're
- 35:45in and right size the event and the
- 35:49location so that it makes the most
- 35:52economical sense.
- 36:06And Carolyn said, really,
- 36:07if you add the online semi,
- 36:08you have even more and a huge complete
- 36:12picture to send the seven athletes to the
- 36:15games from the online portion.
- 36:16They will have completed all these tests.
- 36:20I agree,
- 36:20but that takes away from my regional
- 36:22approach here.
- 36:37So I agree with you if you're staying
- 36:39with today's format.
- 36:41If you're going with a regional format,
- 36:44I like that the regionals in person with
- 36:46judging is separate because of the way
- 36:50it's done in person.
- 36:53I think online should be one score.
- 36:56In person should be another.
- 36:58I agree with you in the current format.
- 37:00If you're going with the online semi,
- 37:02why not do all the online as one
- 37:04score?
- 37:08But I would like to do away with
- 37:10the online portion of the semifinal,
- 37:13go back to regionals where we have
- 37:15in-person judging to make it more legit
- 37:22and more possible to send the right people
- 37:24to the games.
- 37:27All right,
- 37:27a couple things to wrap up before I
- 37:29head back to work,
- 37:30and that is we found out yesterday that
- 37:33Willie Georges became the first CrossFit
- 37:36athlete to break an hour in a High
- 37:37Rocks event.
- 37:39I know that was a James Sprague goal.
- 37:43So here is my question for James Sprague.
- 37:53Willie Georges is a retired CrossFit
- 37:55athlete.
- 37:57Does it mean more if James does it
- 38:00as an active CrossFit athlete?
- 38:03Because he's still training for CrossFit
- 38:07and trying to complete the under the hour
- 38:09in High Rocks.
- 38:11Willie isn't trying to make the games.
- 38:13He isn't trying to compete in WFP.
- 38:16He can solely train for High Rocks and
- 38:19see if he can get the under the
- 38:21hour, which he did.
- 38:23Kudos to him.
- 38:25But I think it means more if James
- 38:30goes under an hour while still being an
- 38:34active, competitive CrossFitter.
- 38:37And I say that for Wayne as he's
- 38:39bringing up Hunter.
- 38:41Hunter is no longer a CrossFit athlete.
- 38:45Jody is asking, who is Willie George?
- 38:48Well, it's George's.
- 38:50He is from France.
- 38:51He was a CrossFit Games athlete before.
- 38:55Three or four years ago,
- 38:57probably made the games four or five
- 39:00times.
- 39:03Was very talented, often injured,
- 39:07and never podiumed or anything at the
- 39:12games, but made some noise for sure.
- 39:19But he's been retired for a few years
- 39:20now.
- 39:22And because of that,
- 39:23he can focus more on a specific style
- 39:25of training to make his numbers better.
- 39:28Where James can't totally quit strength
- 39:31training because it will affect his
- 39:34CrossFit game season to then go do a
- 39:36high rocks under an hour.
- 39:39I think it's more impressive if James does
- 39:41it as an active CrossFit athlete.
- 39:44I think that makes a huge difference.
- 39:48But kudos to Willie Georges for doing it.
- 39:52I don't think it means as much when
- 39:54you're a retired CrossFit athlete as if
- 39:56you're an active CrossFit athlete.
- 40:01Carolyn fills in.
- 40:02Willie Georges has huge numbers in
- 40:04powerlifting, Olympic lifting as well.
- 40:06Very impressive.
- 40:13Last thing I wanted to talk about is
- 40:16Olivia Kerstetter,
- 40:17if you guys did not see,
- 40:19was in the hospital.
- 40:22for a staph infection possible MRSA.
- 40:29And she posted on her Instagram a picture
- 40:34of her in the hospital.
- 40:37I'm going to go ahead and share that.
- 40:49And what she said is little update because
- 40:51I have been MIA lately.
- 40:55Last week after a little swelling in my
- 40:57knee very quickly turned into fever,
- 41:00chills, sweats,
- 41:01lots of pain and even more swelling.
- 41:03I went into the ER where I was
- 41:04told I had cellulitis staph infection that
- 41:07was thought to be MRSA.
- 41:09Luckily,
- 41:09the infection was not in my bloodstream or
- 41:11in my knee joint,
- 41:12which would have caused a lot more damage.
- 41:14My whole leg continued to grow.
- 41:16My fever would not break.
- 41:17My white blood cell count was way too
- 41:19high,
- 41:20and I could not even put weight on
- 41:21my left leg.
- 41:24I actually had this like fifteen years
- 41:27ago.
- 41:28It is one of the most painful things
- 41:30I've ever experienced in my life.
- 41:33I ended up spending five days in the
- 41:35hospital getting antibiotics to get this
- 41:38to clear.
- 41:40I do not envy her at all.
- 41:43I don't know how this is going to
- 41:44affect her season.
- 41:46Her spot on the fitness wellness continuum
- 41:55is sickness wellness fitness continuum is
- 41:58much higher than mine was at the time.
- 42:00It took me a long time to recover
- 42:02from this.
- 42:03a very long time.
- 42:05Um,
- 42:06and I am sure because she is much,
- 42:07much fitter than I was at the time
- 42:09that she will be able to,
- 42:10to recover from this faster than I did,
- 42:14but it is not fun.
- 42:17It is not easy to overcome thoughts and
- 42:19prayers to her to get over this as
- 42:21quickly as possible.
- 42:23Um,
- 42:23and I hope it doesn't affect her CrossFit
- 42:26games season at all.
- 42:31Um,
- 42:33It is extremely,
- 42:35extremely difficult to get through.
- 42:38She said the one thing that she learned
- 42:40on this was probably don't put sweaty,
- 42:44dirty knee sleeves on if you have a
- 42:45cut on your knee.
- 42:48Yeah, be careful, man.
- 42:49If you're cut,
- 42:51be careful what you put on those cuts,
- 42:53man.
- 42:54Nobody wants any of this stuff.
- 43:00Ken said, Jesus, Scott,
- 43:01what haven't you had?
- 43:04I wish I didn't have most of this
- 43:07stuff, Ken.
- 43:09It's just what life throws you,
- 43:11and it only makes you stronger on the
- 43:13other side and learn from your mistakes.
- 43:19Shanna said, no joint involvement.
- 43:20She should be good.
- 43:22Yeah,
- 43:23I didn't have joint involvement either,
- 43:25Shanna.
- 43:25It just hurt really bad for a few
- 43:29weeks.
- 43:32But again,
- 43:33I was nowhere on the continuum that she
- 43:36is on.
- 43:37So she's probably going to recover and
- 43:38bounce back way faster.
- 43:42this was when I had it,
- 43:44it was before I lost any weight.
- 43:47I was,
- 43:48it was right before I started CrossFit.
- 43:51Um,
- 43:51it's probably one of the catalysts that
- 43:53made me start CrossFit.
- 43:56Um, when this happened to me, um,
- 43:59to get better, to get more fit, to,
- 44:01to be able to recover from things like
- 44:03this.
- 44:05Um,
- 44:08So yeah, shout out to her.
- 44:11Hopefully she gets better soon.
- 44:16With that said,
- 44:17I hope you guys have a great weekend.
- 44:19We will be live Sunday night,
- 44:22CrossFit Talk with Carolyn and Jamie,
- 44:25talking about all the news in the CrossFit
- 44:27space,
- 44:28getting their ideas as to what some of
- 44:30the stuff we talked about this week and
- 44:33whatever else happens in the upcoming
- 44:35days.
- 44:36With that, I hope you have a great,
- 44:38great President's Day weekend as I am off
- 44:41on Monday,
- 44:42but I'll go ahead and do this show.
- 44:44With that, have a great day.
- 44:46You guys get back to work.
- 44:47I'll get back to work.
- 44:49And we'll see everybody tomorrow.
- 44:50Or not tomorrow.
- 44:52Sunday night for Sunday Night CrossFit
- 44:53Talk.
- 44:54See you then, guys.
