- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at FindingGodAtWork.org.
- 0:27With this episode, we are kicking off a
- 0:29new series, Divine Disappointments, Facing Pain and Sorrow
- 0:35at Work.
- 0:37If you're like me, work can be a
- 0:39place of incredible motivation, sometimes even joy, but
- 0:43work is also a source of great frustration
- 0:45and sometimes disappointment.
- 0:47Sometimes disappointment that's so profound that it could
- 0:50even fairly be called pain and sorrow.
- 0:53And that can happen both in just the
- 0:55everyday kind of warp and woof of life
- 0:57at work, disappointing circumstances, stressors, just what it
- 1:01feels like to do your job.
- 1:03It can also happen in the bigger picture
- 1:04of our careers and our vocations.
- 1:07We can face deep disappointment about where we've
- 1:09ended up in our lives at work versus
- 1:12what we had dreamed of or what we
- 1:14had longed for when we were younger.
- 1:17And so I want to take time in
- 1:18this series to really lean into that experience
- 1:22of disappointment.
- 1:23So if you're in a season where you're
- 1:25just loving life at work, things are going
- 1:27really well for you, you're full of joy
- 1:28all the time, and you can just stock
- 1:30up for the future during this series because
- 1:33likely there will be times in the future
- 1:35when you face disappointment at work again, or
- 1:38you can think about how people around you
- 1:40may be facing into these things and how
- 1:41you can provide an empathetic and prayerful and
- 1:44thoughtful presence for them as they face disappointments
- 1:47at work.
- 1:47But for a lot of us, this is
- 1:49super accessible.
- 1:50This is right there in front of us.
- 1:51We're facing the difficulties of work.
- 1:53We're facing the disappointment of work on any
- 1:55given week.
- 1:56There's something that happens that fits in that
- 1:58category for us.
- 2:00And the title of the series, Divine Disappointments,
- 2:02is kind of a play on words of
- 2:04this sort of church culture phrase called divine
- 2:07appointments.
- 2:08So I don't know if you've ever heard
- 2:09somebody say, oh, that was a divine appointment
- 2:11when you meet somebody at the exact right
- 2:13place and right time and it just works
- 2:15out and it helped with something that was
- 2:17really important.
- 2:18It's kind of like that idea that in
- 2:20a secular context might be called serendipity, and
- 2:23in a more classic theological context might be
- 2:25called providence.
- 2:26But there's just this phrase that's come up
- 2:27like, oh, that's a divine appointment.
- 2:29Like I met this person at the exact
- 2:32right time.
- 2:33I had this conversation at the exact right
- 2:35time.
- 2:35So play on words, divine disappointments, right?
- 2:40Sometimes our pains, our sorrows, the things that
- 2:43we're facing at work, those can be the
- 2:45places where God meets us.
- 2:48And so it's divine disappointments, not in the
- 2:49sense that God is always sending those things
- 2:51directly to us, but that in our experience
- 2:53of those things, we can meet God, their
- 2:55opportunities for deeper intimacy with God.
- 2:59So that's kind of the banner headline idea
- 3:01of this whole series, is that when we
- 3:04bring our experiences of pain at work to
- 3:07Jesus, He can transform them and make them
- 3:11the places of deepest spiritual growth and most
- 3:15fruitful mission to others in our lives at
- 3:17work.
- 3:18It's not just about how do we get
- 3:20through the disappointments at work, not just how
- 3:22do we grit it out, but rather how
- 3:25do we welcome the Holy Spirit into those
- 3:27places of pain and into those places of
- 3:29sorrow so that He can do His transforming
- 3:31work.
- 3:32And when we do that, we discover those
- 3:33places are the places of deepest spiritual growth.
- 3:37Those places are the places of most fruitful
- 3:40mission that we actually will experience a deeper
- 3:44and more meaningful life at work, because we've
- 3:47gone through the fire of these disappointments with
- 3:49the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 3:51And then if we had just been smooth
- 3:52sailing all the way along.
- 3:55Okay, so for today's episode to kind of
- 3:57kick us off, I want to go to
- 3:59the disappointed at work passage or one of
- 4:01the disappointed at work passages in Scripture.
- 4:03It's almost funny to me how one-sided
- 4:06this passage is, but this was inspired by
- 4:08the Holy Spirit, just like the rest of
- 4:09Scripture was for our benefit.
- 4:11So this is from the book of Ecclesiastes.
- 4:13Within the context of the whole book you
- 4:15have this writer who's called the teacher, who's
- 4:19kind of philosophically exploring the meaning of life
- 4:21and the perceived meaninglessness of life, including life
- 4:25at work.
- 4:25So this is chapter two, starting in verse
- 4:2917.
- 4:32So I hated life because the work that
- 4:34is done under the sun was grievous to
- 4:36me.
- 4:37All of it is meaningless, chasing after the
- 4:39wind.
- 4:39I hated all the things I had toiled
- 4:41for under the sun because I must leave
- 4:43them to the one who comes after me.
- 4:46And who knows whether that person will be
- 4:47wise or foolish, yet they will have control
- 4:50over all the fruit of my toil and
- 4:53to which I have poured out my effort
- 4:54and skill under the sun.
- 4:56This too is meaningless.
- 4:58So my heart began to despair over all
- 5:00my toil some labor under the sun.
- 5:02For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge,
- 5:04and skill, and then they must leave all
- 5:06they own to another who has not toiled
- 5:08for it.
- 5:09This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.
- 5:11What do people get for all the toil
- 5:13and anxious striving with which they labor under
- 5:15the sun?
- 5:16All their days their work is grief and
- 5:19pain.
- 5:20Even at night their minds do not rest.
- 5:22This too is meaningless.
- 5:24A person can do nothing better than to
- 5:26eat and drink and find satisfaction in their
- 5:27own toil.
- 5:28This too I see is from the hand
- 5:29of God, for without him who can eat
- 5:32or find enjoyment.
- 5:33To the person who pleases him, God gives
- 5:35wisdom, knowledge, and happiness, but to the sinner
- 5:37he gives the task of gathering and storing
- 5:39up wealth to hand it over to the
- 5:40one who pleases God.
- 5:42This too is meaningless.
- 5:44A chasing after the wind.
- 5:47Okay, that is the Word of God.
- 5:49That is part of God's word to us
- 5:51about our experience of work.
- 5:53So my takeaway from that little passage is
- 5:56that God understands exactly how much your job
- 5:59sucks.
- 6:01And then I would add, got in light
- 6:02of the whole thrust of Scripture and God's
- 6:04presence with us, and he wants to meet
- 6:06you there.
- 6:07So God understands exactly how much your job
- 6:10sucks and he wants to meet you there.
- 6:12He wants to meet you right there in
- 6:13that place of pain, in that place of
- 6:15disappointment.
- 6:16In this passage there's one particular aspect of
- 6:19why work is disappointing, that the teacher is
- 6:21bemoaning, right?
- 6:22And that's this idea that we can't take
- 6:24it with us, right?
- 6:25We work all our lives to maybe build
- 6:27up some degree of wealth or influence or
- 6:30significance, but then eventually we're all going to
- 6:33die.
- 6:34And then what happens, right?
- 6:35It gets passed on via inheritance to somebody
- 6:38else or maybe, you know, different parts of
- 6:40our legacy get passed on, not even to
- 6:42our heirs, but to other people who kind
- 6:43of pick up where we left off at
- 6:45work, etc.
- 6:46And who knows what they're going to do
- 6:47with it, or if they're even going to
- 6:48do a good job with it.
- 6:50There's this sense of futility, like, ugh, why
- 6:53does it even matter if we're all just
- 6:54going to end up dead in the end?
- 6:57In light of kind of contemporary physics, we
- 6:59can even think about how eventually not only
- 7:02will we all die, but the universe itself
- 7:03will die, right?
- 7:04Eventually our solar system will collapse under the
- 7:08heat death of the sun, right?
- 7:09All life that we have ever known or
- 7:11ever will know will be gone.
- 7:14So that really is like, well, what's the
- 7:15point of work?
- 7:16What does it mean to have a legacy
- 7:16if there will be nobody around to even
- 7:18remember what we did?
- 7:21Okay, now, obviously for those of us who
- 7:23put our faith in Jesus Christ, we have
- 7:25a sense of things that might even outlast
- 7:28the heat death of the sun.
- 7:29That's a big part of how we think
- 7:30about this the significance of the here now
- 7:32related to eternity.
- 7:34But I want to let the biblical passage
- 7:36that's bemoaning this sense of meaninglessness to hit
- 7:39us where it's at, because we feel that
- 7:41in the moment, don't we?
- 7:42We don't always feel like, oh yeah, but
- 7:44this counts for eternity.
- 7:45Sometimes we feel like, well, what was the
- 7:46point of that?
- 7:47Like, why did I work so hard on
- 7:49that project only for the company to shift
- 7:51priorities and that project never saw the light?
- 7:54Or why did I work so hard to
- 7:55get that promotion only for it to go
- 7:57to somebody who clearly does not deserve it
- 7:59and does not qualify to do it?
- 8:00Or why did I work so hard to
- 8:02get that degree now that the job market
- 8:04for it is totally terrible and it just
- 8:06feels like my student loans are reminding me
- 8:08every month of how dumb it was for
- 8:10me to try and make that educational investment?
- 8:13Or why does it matter that I do
- 8:15a good job at my work when somebody
- 8:17who slacks off gets paid just as much
- 8:18or more than I do?
- 8:20There's so many dimensions here where we feel
- 8:23just like the teacher and ecclesiastes feel.
- 8:25We feel like our work is meaningless.
- 8:27Our work does not count our jobs.
- 8:29They just are bothersome and annoying and fruitless.
- 8:35Okay, so how can we respond to this
- 8:40passage?
- 8:41I want to suggest that that feeling, that
- 8:46that's what you can bring to God today,
- 8:49right?
- 8:50God included these words in the Bible for
- 8:53a reason so that we could connect with
- 8:55him so that we could draw close to
- 8:57him.
- 8:57And there's even a little hint of that
- 8:58in this passage, right, where he says a
- 9:00person can do nothing better than to eat
- 9:02and drink and find satisfaction in their own
- 9:04toil.
- 9:05This too, I see, is from the hand
- 9:07of God.
- 9:08So there's this sense of like God is
- 9:09there and in as much as we can
- 9:11experience joy or or satisfaction at work, that's
- 9:13a that's a gift of God, right, even
- 9:15in the mix of all of these other
- 9:16big questions and the sense of purposelessness that
- 9:19we sometimes feel.
- 9:20I think that that feeling, that feeling of
- 9:25that's where God can meet you.
- 9:27So what is that feeling for you today?
- 9:28What is the disappointment that you are facing
- 9:31today?
- 9:32If you can just name it, what are
- 9:34you most disappointed about with your current job
- 9:36or your current vocational and career life?
- 9:40What is that for you today?
- 9:43Name that, bring that to God in prayer,
- 9:45and let that launch you into, as we
- 9:48explore in this series, how God can transform
- 9:50that disappointment and make it a place of
- 9:52incredible growth and incredibly fruitful mission.
- 9:56So just as a little bit of an
- 9:57outline for the series, for this one, because
- 10:00of its nature, I may try to include
- 10:02a few more interviews than we normally do,
- 10:04so that may be fun, but because of
- 10:06that, I'm not quite sure of the exact
- 10:07order of the episodes because I've got to
- 10:09schedule with people to do the interviews.
- 10:10So this is more like a sampling than
- 10:12an outline of the series, but we're going
- 10:14to be looking at injustice at work.
- 10:16What if you face injustice like racial or
- 10:19sexual discrimination at work, or even just a
- 10:21boss treating you unfairly relative to your efforts?
- 10:25How do you deal with the death of
- 10:26a dream, the death of a vocational dream?
- 10:28I have personal experience with that and a
- 10:31sense of, wow, this isn't what I plan
- 10:32for at all.
- 10:34What does that mean for me and for
- 10:35my future?
- 10:36How do you face challenges like being passed
- 10:38over for a promotion or getting laid off
- 10:40or getting fired?
- 10:42How do you deal with that more existential
- 10:43sense of purposelessness or emptiness in work?
- 10:46How do you face the really practical realities
- 10:48of financial stress at work when you just
- 10:49aren't making enough, or if you're facing a
- 10:52toxic boss or toxic workplace or burnout?
- 10:55How do you face those circumstantial things like
- 10:57if you fail as a small business entrepreneur,
- 11:01and then other things too, like you can
- 11:03face loss of reputation at work.
- 11:05You can face boredom and disengagement at work.
- 11:07You can be forced into early retirement or
- 11:09into part-time work by health issues or
- 11:10family health issues.
- 11:11You can face moral injury at work if
- 11:13you feel like your values and your convictions
- 11:15were compromised in some way.
- 11:17This is especially prominent for those who are
- 11:19first responders or in the military but also
- 11:21in other fields as well.
- 11:24So we're going to be taking a look
- 11:26at all of those dimensions and how they
- 11:28overlap with each other, bringing them to Jesus
- 11:31and inviting him to do his transforming work
- 11:33and us.
- 11:34Really looking forward to digging into this with
- 11:36you in the we do ask that we
- 11:42would be present to you with our pain
- 11:43with our sorrow such as it is.
- 11:46Give us a gift of incredible emotional honesty
- 11:48with you during this series.
- 11:51Help us to level with ourselves and with
- 11:53you and with other conversation partners so that
- 11:56we can welcome you into those places of
- 11:59pain and disappointment so that we can experience
- 12:00your grace and your transformation.
- 12:04Jesus do your work in us as we
- 12:05do our work with you.
- 12:07Amen.
- 12:12Thanks for listening.
