- 0:00Speaker 1: Now let's go back to women's basketball. Some pretty compelling
- 0:02Speaker 1: stuff from Vic Shaef for the longrn's head coach to
- 0:04Speaker 1: start off the irony. Have some more from his media
- 0:06Speaker 1: availability today.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Hey, coach, two questions. I want to ask you about
- 0:12Speaker 2: Kyla because it looked to me Sunday night. Could she
- 0:18Speaker 2: be an enforcer? Do you want that on this type
- 0:21Speaker 2: of team? Somebody who can come in and just immediately
- 0:23Speaker 2: mix it up and kind of lay down the law
- 0:25Speaker 2: type of player, especially with her quickness and agility.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you're right. I think you've got I've
- 0:32Speaker 3: got some options there. Like there's a part of me
- 0:36Speaker 3: that if she was healthy, I might want to start
- 0:41Speaker 3: her because Shae. I can bring Shae in at two positions,
- 0:47Speaker 3: and I know she's going to fix what's broke because
- 0:51Speaker 3: she's been here, and there's some comfort for me knowing
- 0:56Speaker 3: that and our team.
- 0:58Speaker 4: I mean, I know our team and it's so confident
- 1:02Speaker 4: in Shae.
- 1:03Speaker 3: The other side, though, is Shane knows exactly what I
- 1:06Speaker 3: want to start the game. Just like the other night,
- 1:09Speaker 3: we executed that first play to a t. She made
- 1:12Speaker 3: a great cut, Booker made a great pass. But Shaye
- 1:16Speaker 3: also brings defensively what I want to do, and she
- 1:19Speaker 3: understands that piece, and so you know it's uh. And
- 1:25Speaker 3: then Jordan Lee, she's the other one I could easily
- 1:28Speaker 3: throw into the starting lineup. If we go out and
- 1:31Speaker 3: play horse right now, she might win the horse game.
- 1:34Speaker 3: You know, she might win the three point shooting contest.
- 1:37Speaker 3: I know everybody's worried about my three point shooting, but
- 1:41Speaker 3: I've never been a coach that went, oh my god,
- 1:43Speaker 3: we got to make ten threes a game? No, why
- 1:45Speaker 3: would you take a twenty two foot or if you
- 1:47Speaker 3: can go get a layup like that?
- 1:50Speaker 4: Makes no sense to me.
- 1:51Speaker 3: But I know everybody's a great coach, and they all
- 1:53Speaker 3: got their own opinions.
- 1:55Speaker 4: But we scored ninety one points.
- 1:57Speaker 3: If we'd have shot seventy five eighty percent of the
- 1:59Speaker 3: free tow line, we'd have probably scored one hundred and
- 2:01Speaker 3: still not made a three. So I last year's team
- 2:06Speaker 3: didn't make a lot of threes and won thirty three games.
- 2:10Speaker 3: So I know, you know, I'd love to be able
- 2:13Speaker 3: to make six, seven, eight threes a game.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Be great.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'd love it, be the first one in line for it,
- 2:18Speaker 3: But I don't think it handicaps you if you don't
- 2:21Speaker 3: have somebody that can make one or make it consistently.
- 2:25Speaker 3: I think we've got players that can make them consistently. Again,
- 2:30Speaker 3: it's getting in the gym. It's being familiar with the
- 2:33Speaker 3: gym you're playing in, and then when you go on
- 2:36Speaker 3: the road, that's a different gym. And so for us here,
- 2:40Speaker 3: you know, we're trying to get into Moody to be
- 2:42Speaker 3: familiar with our home gym, and then when we're on
- 2:45Speaker 3: the road, that's just life on the road. And so
- 2:49Speaker 3: the secrets of success winning on the road has always
- 2:52Speaker 3: been defense, rebounding, an inside game. That's it doesn't say
- 2:56Speaker 3: anything about three point shooting. Defense, rebounding, inside game, that's
- 3:02Speaker 3: what you got to have when you go on the road.
- 3:04Speaker 3: If you can make some shots from three, great, But
- 3:07Speaker 3: if you got them other three cooking, you got a
- 3:09Speaker 3: chance to win.
- 3:11Speaker 2: And real quick, I apologize if you've talked about this
- 3:14Speaker 2: and I just don't know it, But what what is
- 3:17Speaker 2: what's the deal with Abby?
- 3:20Speaker 4: Yeah, so she's she's got another injury that she's.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Dealing with, and and so we're just that's where we're
- 3:29Speaker 3: at right now. She's not practicing, and you know, she's
- 3:35Speaker 3: she's having to not be able to practice right.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Now, okay, And is there any timetable on that or not?
- 3:41Speaker 2: No right now?
- 3:42Speaker 4: And I don't I don't have any idea.
- 3:44Speaker 5: Okay, coach, thank you for being with us. First of all,
- 3:48Speaker 5: you've got a really really good point in your opening
- 3:51Speaker 5: statement playing de Paul and not not you know, might
- 3:56Speaker 5: not have read about it. And and I have people
- 4:00Speaker 5: come up to the game and show up at the
- 4:02Speaker 5: game and fill the stadium has always been very important
- 4:04Speaker 5: for you to you for a very good reason. And
- 4:07Speaker 5: I'm thinking about what I call and what everyone else
- 4:09Speaker 5: calls the Caitlin Clark effect. And I don't mean to
- 4:12Speaker 5: compare any one of your players to her. She's a
- 4:15Speaker 5: generational player, but what she effectively done has done is
- 4:20Speaker 5: she's caused people to want to watch women's basketball. And
- 4:24Speaker 5: so I'm curious, just from your framework, if your view
- 4:28Speaker 5: of the world, how can you know fans, how could
- 4:33Speaker 5: we get fans to cause them to want to show
- 4:36Speaker 5: up to the game. You know, what does that look
- 4:39Speaker 5: like to you? What is I'm not sure the problem
- 4:41Speaker 5: is solvable. I mean, again, she's a big draw, and
- 4:44Speaker 5: you know, but I'm just curious your thoughts on that
- 4:47Speaker 5: whole thing, because that would be women's basketball and women's
- 4:50Speaker 5: sports is exploding for a very good reason too. So
- 4:54Speaker 5: curious your thoughts.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I'll say this, I've got I've got
- 4:59Speaker 3: general players on my team right now. I've got kids
- 5:03Speaker 3: playing for the University of Texas right now that they
- 5:08Speaker 3: haven't had kids like them in here in a long
- 5:10Speaker 3: long time. I mean, let's just be honest about it again.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Part of building your program is having people like you
- 5:20Speaker 3: on here covering my team and helping me spread the word.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Unless I missed it, we weren't in the newspaper the
- 5:28Speaker 3: last two days. I'm going to assume we weren't in
- 5:31Speaker 3: there on Monday when we got finished playing on Sunday
- 5:34Speaker 3: night at whatever time it was eight thirty, And it's
- 5:37Speaker 3: not in today's paper because I got it.
- 5:40Speaker 4: So you know.
- 5:41Speaker 3: That that's disturbing. It's not not right. It's not how
- 5:46Speaker 3: you treat the number four team in the country. But
- 5:49Speaker 3: I promise you the first time we stub our toe,
- 5:51Speaker 3: when we get upset, that's'll be on the front page.
- 5:56Speaker 3: But it's you know, it is what it is, y'all.
- 5:59Speaker 3: I've been fighting it since i've been here. It's not
- 6:01Speaker 3: the first time we hadn't been in the paper and
- 6:04Speaker 3: so but if it is in the paper and there's
- 6:06Speaker 3: one hundred thousand subscribers to a paper paper, not online.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Like my fans are the blue hairs and no airs
- 6:14Speaker 3: and the gray hairs, they ain't reading online.
- 6:18Speaker 4: But it is what it is, y'all.
- 6:20Speaker 3: I can't worry about the things I can't control, but
- 6:23Speaker 3: I will say my kids deserve better. We do have
- 6:26Speaker 3: generational players on our team, you know. I think you
- 6:33Speaker 3: you know, It's like when I had Victoria Vivian's at
- 6:36Speaker 3: Mississippi State. I tried to tell those fans you better
- 6:39Speaker 3: get here and watch her while you can, because there's.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Not many of those that roll around.
- 6:45Speaker 3: And now we've got players like Madison Booker, you know,
- 6:49Speaker 3: Rory Harmon. There's not a whole lot of teams across
- 6:53Speaker 3: the country, y'all that can can start two guards like that.
- 6:57Speaker 3: And I'm not trying to short change anybody else on
- 7:00Speaker 3: my team. We got really good players. But I just
- 7:05Speaker 3: you know, again, I always say this, if I can
- 7:07Speaker 3: get you to my game one time, you'll come back.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And it was great to see that opening night crowd.
- 7:14Speaker 3: I was so proud of that crowd for our opening
- 7:17Speaker 3: night against Simo. And again, that's part of building a program.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It's not just X's and O's and wins and losses.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I mean, it's just it's not. And that's why I
- 7:30Speaker 3: need you guys so badly.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Like I.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Can't tell you how important you all are to our program,
- 7:38Speaker 3: not just in helping build our program and put people
- 7:42Speaker 3: in seats, but promoting my kids.
- 7:46Speaker 4: And again, if I don't fight for them, who's gonna
- 7:49Speaker 4: do it?
- 7:50Speaker 3: If you guys don't write about them, If you guys
- 7:52Speaker 3: aren't talking about them on TV.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Who's gonna do it?
- 7:58Speaker 3: And so it's just I'm at your mercy, but I
- 8:02Speaker 3: shouldn't be. You guys have been around that. I look
- 8:05Speaker 3: at this panel and you guys have been around the block.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Jeff Young him and Zach are probably the two youngest
- 8:11Speaker 3: dudes on here. Like, you guys know the importance of
- 8:15Speaker 3: what you do and how you do it for us
- 8:18Speaker 3: and these kids, and it's so important. You know, it's
- 8:25Speaker 3: hard to cut out a newspaper article and send it
- 8:27Speaker 3: to a recruit winner ain't one.
- 8:29Speaker 5: So so let me follow up on that, going back
- 8:31Speaker 5: to what Brian kind of alluded to. And I didn't
- 8:33Speaker 5: mean to throw my fellow cards.
- 8:36Speaker 4: And I'm not I'm not throwing them either. I'm just
- 8:39Speaker 4: making a statement.
- 8:40Speaker 5: But so and again I'm not terry.
- 8:46Speaker 4: Pardon go ahead, but we got other people we need
- 8:50Speaker 4: to get to as well.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Okay, and could it be you know Ketland's known for
- 8:54Speaker 5: those three point shots. I mean, that's what it drew everybody.
- 8:57Speaker 5: So going back to what Brian was talking about, maybe
- 9:00Speaker 5: you do have somebody who can hit three pointers that
- 9:02Speaker 5: draw you. People love that, the Curry effect, you know
- 9:06Speaker 5: what I'm saying. And so anyway, I don't I didn't
- 9:08Speaker 5: mean to create.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Oh it's all right. I mean I don't have that
- 9:12Speaker 4: three I don't have that person. Nobody does.
- 9:16Speaker 3: But what I do have is another a different kind
- 9:19Speaker 3: of player, a different style of player.
- 9:22Speaker 4: Again. Really, you know, again a lot not many people have,
- 9:29Speaker 4: you know.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Just to start at those two spots what we have,
- 9:33Speaker 3: and then you know we've got we've got some size,
- 9:37Speaker 3: and of course we're pretty athletic. So again I just
- 9:41Speaker 3: think I'm at the mercy of you guys so so
- 9:44Speaker 3: much to help me spread the word about my team.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And when I get home and I don't see it.
- 9:51Speaker 3: It is frustrating. I don't whether you agree or not,
- 9:55Speaker 3: it's any coach worth their salt is going to want
- 10:00Speaker 3: He's gonna want that coverage and want that support for
- 10:03Speaker 3: his kids.
- 10:04Speaker 4: I mean, these kids deserve it, man. They work really hard.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And we're in a big community here in Austin, and
- 10:11Speaker 3: so anyway, that's that's where we're at.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Hey, as we all know, when Vic gets going, he
- 10:17Speaker 1: can get going. We're gonna hear some more from Vic
- 10:19Speaker 1: Shaffer coming up next hour. We uh will be back
- 10:22Speaker 1: to wrap up our number two here on sports Radio
- 10:24Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
