- 0:01When an individual takes up the spiritual quest, he tends to
- 0:05accept certain principles of action which by definition
- 0:09contradict the values, principles and life actions of
- 0:13his past experience. In many cases this causes a
- 0:18considerable amount of doubt and concern as he tries to overlay
- 0:23his present value set on to the past and judge the past based on
- 0:28his present understanding. Of course, in every person's
- 0:33past there are numerous actions which can be called up before
- 0:37the mind's eye which do not meet this test.
- 0:40As long as we remain immersed in the ego consciousness, we can
- 0:45become despondent, fearful and deeply depressed by the results
- 0:50of this review. There are times during the
- 0:53spiritual growth that the force of the higher consciousness
- 0:57opens up embedded memories, particularly when it is the time
- 1:01for hidden movements encapsulated in the
- 1:03subconscious, in the very cells to be raised up and addressed.
- 1:09In some cases, these past memories, embodying instincts,
- 1:14habits, training, and wilful acts, try to recreate themselves
- 1:19in the present, overwhelming the individual with these
- 1:22recrudescences, making the seeker feel unworthy or unfit
- 1:29for the spiritual quest. It is clear that in the long
- 1:34span of the evolution of consciousness from that of
- 1:37matter through the development of life and the expression of
- 1:41mind, each individual soul has undergone innumerable lifetimes
- 1:47of experience, been immersed in lives that were necessary for
- 1:51the formative experience, and aligned with the time and the
- 1:55circumstance when it occurred. It is also true that as the
- 2:01individual takes a new birth, he has to redevelop and undergo
- 2:05countless experiences in childhood and in his youth that
- 2:09are very much influenced by the atmosphere within which he is
- 2:13being raised, the society and its values, and the education
- 2:18and training he receives. For much of this time he is not
- 2:22separated as the conscious witness of the nature and thus
- 2:27more or less becomes what he experiences.
- 2:31Once the spiritual Force awakens in him, he begins to consciously
- 2:36choose his path forward and his values, life, focus, and actions
- 2:42take on this new direction. The past experience then becomes
- 2:47not a hindrance to his development, but a basis for the
- 2:51development of knowledge and wisdom to guide the choices for
- 2:55the future. In this light, there are
- 2:58examples of individuals whose past, if evaluated on the basis
- 3:03of their later spiritual realizations, would be found
- 3:07sorely wanting. Most people do not have active
- 3:11memories in their current lifetime that can equal those
- 3:15that individuals such as Milarepa, who, driven by a
- 3:20desire for revenge, called down a devastating, destructive and
- 3:25lethal hailstorm on the village where he had grown up, and in
- 3:29particular on his aunt and uncle who had stolen his patrimony and
- 3:35driven his mother and sister into desperate straits.
- 3:39Yet Milarepa used the impetus of his remorse, once he awakened to
- 3:44the magnitude of his actions to achieve liberation in one
- 3:49lifetime. The Christian tradition tells of
- 3:52an individual, Saul of Tarsus, who was persecuting Christians.
- 3:58He had an experience on the road to Damascus, where he was going
- 4:02to carry out further persecutions that transformed
- 4:06him into a devotee and believer who went on to change his life
- 4:10entirely into that of a devout Christian.
- 4:14Similarly, we have the contemporary story of Danny and
- 4:17Brinkley, who was declared clinically dead after being
- 4:21struck by lightning, but who returned with an entirely new
- 4:25understanding and focus. His past was that of a hired
- 4:29mercenary killer. His future was one of bringing
- 4:33light and developing compassion in action.
- 4:37A program to train people in providing Hospice care.
- 4:43Fiora Binda describes the path that takes the seeker through
- 4:47all the struggles in his palm. A God's labor quote.
- 4:53I have been digging deep and long.
- 4:56Mid A horror of felth and mire. A bed for the Golden River Song,
- 5:02a home for the deathless fire. End Quote.
- 5:08In Savitri, a legend and a symbol, he recounts quote.
- 5:13But when God's messenger comes to help the world and lead the
- 5:17soul of earth to higher things, he too must carry the yoke he
- 5:22came to unloose. He too must bear the pang that
- 5:26he would heal, exempt and unafflicted by earth's fate.
- 5:31How shall he cure the ills he never felt?
- 5:35He covers the world's agony with his calm, but though to the
- 5:39outward eye no sign appears, and peace is given to our torn human
- 5:44hearts, the struggle is there and paid the unseen price.
- 5:50The fire, the strife, the wrestle are within.
- 5:55He carries the suffering world in his own breast.
- 5:59Its sins weigh on his thoughts. Its grief is his Earth's ancient
- 6:04load lies heavy on his soul knight, and its powers beleaguer
- 6:09his tardy steps. The Titan adversary's clutch he
- 6:13bears. His March is a battle and a
- 6:17pilgrimage. End Quote, the mother observes.
- 6:23Quote. And finally, lest you get
- 6:26discouraged by your own faults, the Damapata gives you this
- 6:30solacing image. The purest Lily can spring out
- 6:34of a heap of rubbish by the wayside.
- 6:37That is to say, there is nothing so rotten that it cannot give
- 6:41birth to the purest realization. Whatever may be the past,
- 6:47whenever may be the fault committed, whatever the
- 6:51ignorance in which one might have lived, one carries deep
- 6:54within oneself the supreme purity which can translate
- 6:58itself into a wonderful realization.
- 7:02The whole point is to think of that, to concentrate on that and
- 7:07not be concerned with all the difficulties and obstacles and
- 7:11hindrances. Concentrate exclusively on what
- 7:14you want to be. Forget as entirely as possible
- 7:18what you do not want to be. End Quote.
