EP29 - Is That Really True? · Oh And One More Thing

0:10
Some old friends facing our fears, laughing through the
0:13
chaos and drinking some beers. So here's to the last the crows
0:17
and the cheers, all the awkward moments.
0:19
And we're still here. Because in the end, we're just
0:22
doing our thing. It's our crazy life. 01 more
0:25
thing. One more thing.
0:31
Oh. Hey, I'm Rob and this is Owen.
0:36
One more thing. Hey, I'm Brian Burr.
0:39
It is cold outside. It's the middle of January, you
0:43
know. Yes it is.
0:44
And in Minnesota, that means. Burr.
0:46
Burr. So what's new?
0:47
What have you been doing? Well, since this so-called we
0:50
did replace our furnace this week.
0:52
You did. We did.
0:53
It wasn't really by choice, our old one was starting to crap
0:56
out. Yeah, it was in the house a long
0:57
time. Right, always over 15 years
0:59
with. That's about right time that's.
1:01
About right. I mean, they should last longer,
1:02
but our mold was starting to go on and blah, blah.
1:04
Yeah, yeah, nobody cares. But so this I'm a Google
1:07
household as you know. Yes, I do know you're a Google.
1:09
I'm an Alexa. House yes, I know you are.
1:11
It's so weird. And, and there's been times when
1:13
we've been talking and my little Google back here likes to light
1:15
up and talk to us if I say the magic words, right, and which
1:18
we're not going to say. But I did put in a Google Nest
1:21
thermostat, OK, which is kind of funky.
1:23
Isn't what you had before. No, we had whatever our Carrier
1:26
furnace and you had to pay like 1500 freaking bucks for the
1:28
dump. OK, because that's proprietary,
1:30
but so put in the next one and funny, the next one doesn't
1:33
compatible with our new furnace either.
1:35
But but we had a really cool technician who worked as magic
1:38
and got it to work. So I'm super excited about that.
1:40
Great. Yeah, so it connects into your
1:42
Google Home. Yeah.
1:43
So that would be good. Yeah, awesome.
1:45
Hey, do you ever watch this show?
1:46
Nobody wants this on Netflix. Yeah, it's pretty good show.
1:49
Yeah, we really like it. Yeah.
1:50
But OK, I got a question. Hmm.
1:52
What's her job? Is she like a just a podcaster?
1:56
I I'm pretty sure that's it really mean.
1:58
You could make a living at being a podcaster.
2:01
Who knew? I didn't know that.
2:03
And then, OK, if you watch the show, yeah, they use handheld
2:07
mics. Oh, they do.
2:08
Yeah. And they're flopping around all
2:10
over the place. They're not getting good audio.
2:12
That is so fake. There's no way you'd hear thump
2:14
thump, that's all. That's all you'd hear.
2:17
All the crap that I'd tell you'd stop doing.
2:19
Right. Every time I thug the table,
2:22
stop it, you'd totally hear that.
2:25
Yeah, that, that's. So that's all I had to say about
2:27
that, but I love the show. The show's great.
2:29
How do you make a living at that?
2:31
I don't know. We should work on that.
2:32
People, we need more people tell.
2:34
Your friends? Yeah.
2:35
You know, I was going to quit all my bad habits for the new
2:37
year, but but then I remember that nobody likes a quitter.
2:41
That nobody does like a quitter, Rob, right.
2:44
So, you know, I've been seeing all of these memes and or images
2:47
everyday, like everyday facts and stats, you know, on the
2:50
Internet and I always think, oh, that's interesting, right?
2:53
Because if it's not on the Internet.
2:54
It's true. Well, of course it is, Rob.
2:56
And then I start to think, OK, wait a minute, is that really
2:59
true? Mm hmm, is the Internet right or
3:02
wrong? Mm hmm, I don't really know.
3:04
So I thought we should talk about some of those myths and
3:07
see if there really are true or false.
3:09
OK, I like that. Yeah, that's good.
3:11
That's good because I'm kind honestly, I know I give you a
3:14
crap all the time, but honestly if I see it online, I most the
3:17
time my first get reaction is it's true.
3:19
But I know half the crap I'm looking at is AI made videos and
3:22
images. And I saw one today of a cat
3:25
holding the screwdriver into an electrical panel with a baby
3:29
down below watching it and the cat shocked himself and it's
3:32
ferwent poof and the baby fell over.
3:34
OK, but I'll Rob, you know that. What?
3:35
I know that's fake. OK, I complete 100% oh, that's
3:39
fake. But at first watch like, oh,
3:40
that's so cute. But dude, that's a freaking cat
3:42
holding the screwdriver at an electrical panel.
3:44
But yeah, I, I. Tend to believe a lot of those
3:46
things that I see so yeah OK so let's start with a common myth
3:49
that I recently seen on on about your body and your our health so
3:54
I found these on the Internet like I said and these are either
3:57
truthful or not so. You found the meme or whatever
4:01
and then? And then I did a little deep
4:02
dive deep. Dive into I love.
4:04
I love it when you deep dive. Yeah, so, so did you know, OK,
4:09
You shed millions of skin cells every day.
4:12
OK, I knew that I shed skin cells.
4:14
I didn't know it was 1,000,000 though.
4:16
And first thing I start thinking about, am I a lizard?
4:19
Am I like shedding? Right?
4:21
But OK, Fact Check, OK, Humans shed approximately 500 million
4:25
skin cells per day. Per day, yeah.
4:28
This is due to constant renewal process of the skin where old
4:31
cells are shed and replaced by new ones.
4:33
The shedding process is called. OK, bear with me.
4:36
Disquamination. OK, something.
4:39
Like that, OK. I suppose, I mean, if I guess if
4:41
you think about it, the word skin cell is awfully small,
4:44
right? It's got it because.
4:46
I have this next stat here that's going to tell you what it
4:48
is. Read ahead.
4:50
Do. You know what 500 million skin
4:53
cells weigh? I do not.
4:55
OK, it only weighs about .08g. OK, well.
4:59
There there's your answer. So that is not going to be a
5:01
weight loss program, not. There's any weight on that
5:05
program? No, no, no.
5:06
OK. So we can just go back and forth
5:08
on these stats? OK, well, I like that.
5:10
That's a good one to start. I like that.
5:11
OK, Did you know your stomach renews its lining every few
5:16
days? So if it renews your lining
5:19
every so would you have a fresh stomach constantly?
5:22
Oh, I don't know, but it's weird.
5:24
It is odd, but what's the fact? Check.
5:25
So yes, the stomach lining constantly replaces itself.
5:29
The stomach is lined with a layer of cells called Oh my God,
5:33
why do you do this to me? Epithelial cells.
5:36
I like that Nurse Nikki is going to beat me up when she listen to
5:39
this. She's a nurse by the way.
5:41
These cells are constantly being damaged by the strong acid and
5:44
enzymes and stomach juice drills, right?
5:47
To. Protect itself The stomach
5:49
lining undergoes a process called regeneration, where old
5:51
cells are shed and replaced with new ones.
5:52
OK, now are these the same cells like like your skin that that
5:55
you're? No, you're skin on the your
5:57
outer on the outside. But it's kind of the same
6:00
concept though, right? I mean.
6:02
Oh, a cell's a cell. Right.
6:03
Cell's a cell, right? Hey, here's trivia.
6:05
OK, what's the largest organ in your body?
6:09
Your skin, Yes, Thank you. And that wasn't even multiple
6:12
choice that. Wasn't even you got it rule all.
6:16
Right, so this process takes about 3 to 5 days and is
6:19
essential for maintaining a healthy stomach.
6:21
Without regeneration, the stomach lining could become
6:24
damaged and lead to ulcers or other digestive problems.
6:27
OK, so then why are there ulcers?
6:29
I mean, if you're regenerating your stomach, wouldn't that take
6:33
care of the ulcer and the other issues?
6:35
Well, it's always new I'm. Sure, it's probably 'cause
6:37
you're always introducing new things in your stomach on a
6:39
constant basis, so it probably just can't work fast enough to
6:43
offset that. OK, I'm going to believe you.
6:45
Would be my guess. Since the Internet told me.
6:48
It's got to be true. It's true.
6:49
That's right. OK, have another one here.
6:50
OK, Humans only use 10% of their brains, have you heard that?
6:54
I have heard that. I've heard that repeatedly.
6:56
All the time. That's got to be.
6:57
True and Fact Check this is. Fall, shut the door.
7:01
So brain imaging shows that almost all parts of the brain
7:04
are active at various times, even when sleeping.
7:06
And we know that why. OK, we just had, we just said
7:09
podcast, I mean last on Dreaming Fall, but we did podcast on
7:12
Dreaming. Yeah, and we learned that you're
7:14
most active when you're dreaming.
7:15
Yeah, OK. I like that.
7:17
But this part of your brain that doesn't act, but I suppose the
7:19
part that's not active when you're dreaming that the frontal
7:21
cortex, that the math part. Opposites, I'm sure, right?
7:23
That works during the day. So OK, it's all coming together
7:26
now. It is.
7:27
It's. Like a big so that that that
7:28
little tidbit that you see on the Internet, it's wrong.
7:31
It's wrong all right. I like.
7:32
It I love this podcast. All right, next one, you are
7:37
taller in the morning. What?
7:38
Right, I'm already. Tall.
7:40
You are very tall but. So I got to imagine you're
7:43
really. Tall in the morning, You know,
7:45
I'm not that short. You know, I'm funny.
7:48
I have kind of heard this one before and I never really
7:49
thought about it. But as as you fact checked it,
7:51
yes, you are typically slightly taller in the morning because
7:55
the cartilage discs in your spine decompress overnight, but
7:59
this height difference is lost throughout the day due to the
8:01
effects of gravity. That's cool.
8:03
So if we were floating around in space all the time, we'd be
8:05
taller. I'd be much taller, right?
8:08
By a whole, like quarter of an inch.
8:09
OK, now this one, I love this one and I want I want to talk
8:12
about it. OK, You glow in the dark.
8:14
You do not. OK, so I thought the same thing.
8:16
Well, what the heck? That is ridiculous, right?
8:19
Right. Fact Check.
8:20
Yes, humans glow in the dark, but the light is so faint it is
8:25
1000 times too weak for the human eye to see.
8:28
So that's like some like weird like UV light like we can't see
8:32
but like cats can or something like.
8:33
That right this natural bioluminescence is a side effect
8:37
of your metabolism and can be detected by high, highly
8:40
sensitive cameras. Really.
8:42
Isn't that crazy? So is that kind of how like I, I
8:45
guess I don't, I'm asking a question I should know the
8:47
answer to. Is that how like night vision
8:48
cameras kind of work a little bit as far 'cause they work out
8:50
heat right, Don't they? They.
8:52
I think those are heat related heat or or are they just very,
8:55
very small amount of light and it magnifies it.
8:57
I don't know. I don't know.
8:58
Oh, another question. We could.
9:00
Have we should faction? That too, but you know, the
9:01
bioluminescence, Do you have that algae that glows?
9:04
Yeah, it's the same idea of that, is that the
9:07
bioluminescence in our bodies naturally glow, but we just
9:10
can't see it. But wouldn't it be cool if you
9:13
could concentrate all of your bioluminescence to the end of
9:17
your finger and you have a built in flashlight?
9:20
Well, you know, technically, like in the winter when I'm at
9:23
night in my dark closet, I'm like taking, like my stuff off
9:25
to go to bed and there's a spark because of the static
9:28
electricity. Yeah, that's kind of like a
9:30
light in your. Face.
9:30
Yeah, yes, yes, that's awesome. Right.
9:35
All right. I thought you were going to say
9:36
you could see your skin. Well, I mean, you can.
9:40
It's. Because you're white.
9:41
Here's that. All right, this is a great one
9:45
for my children, IE my youngest child Kayla, who cracks her
9:50
knuckles all the time, is going to cause arthritis.
9:53
I've heard that all my life. So have I and stop it.
9:55
She cracks them all the time. My mom told me all the time and
9:59
I was like, I can't help myself, right?
10:01
She's she's constant about it. So Fact Check this is false.
10:04
Yes. There is no scientific evidence
10:08
to support the idea that cracking your knuckles causes
10:11
osteoarthritis. The sound is caused by gas
10:13
bubbles bursting within the joint.
10:15
Fluid so and I had heard that as well.
10:17
I heard that too. Really completely understand if
10:19
it was false or not. But yeah, I'm glad we cleared
10:22
that up. So I apologize to my daughter
10:23
for all the times I've ridiculed and mocked you and said stop
10:25
cracking your knuckles in front of me.
10:27
It's more just because it annoys me than anything.
10:30
That's why. And you're the dads.
10:31
You're not hurting anything. Hey, Brian, Hey, Rob.
10:39
We all know that Spring Green fertilizes our lawn and sprays
10:42
for weeds. And it looks fantastic.
10:44
Did you also know they offer a bunch of other services?
10:47
Like making mosquitoes go away. We love our mosquito free yard,
10:50
especially in Minnesota. You know mosquitoes are the
10:52
official state bird, right? I'm fairly certain it's saloon,
10:55
but yes, no mosquitoes rock. And liquid aerations, rock and
10:59
mechanical aerations, and overseeding and lawn insect
11:02
control. Oh my.
11:04
And. Don't forget about the Total
11:05
home Peston rodent control. That's right, my house is mouse
11:08
free. See what Spring Green can do for
11:10
you at springdashgreen.com. For a personalized quote
11:13
specific to your property, that's Spring dashgreen.com.
11:17
And tell them oh and one more thing, don't you?
11:22
Other things you should know about your body.
11:23
Did you know normal blood pressure is 120 / 80?
11:29
I didn't know that because I have high blood pressure.
11:31
OK, so let's Fact Check that, right?
11:34
OK, Normal blood pressure is typically defined as a systolic
11:38
pressure. The top number is less than 120
11:42
mmHg. What does that mean?
11:44
It's medical term. OK.
11:45
We'll get to that later. And the diastolic pressure
11:50
bottom number is less than 80. Yeah, I have no idea what the
11:54
the 120 / 80 of the Mmm's that he choose.
11:56
I have no idea what any of the crap means, but.
11:58
OK, let's find out. OK, OK, so I just looked it up.
12:00
MmHg stands for millimetre of mercury, a unit of pressure used
12:05
in medicine and science. Well, that makes complete sense
12:07
then. Right.
12:07
I mean, I don't know what these things are, but Nurse Nikki
12:10
does. Right, she's all over it.
12:11
So do you want to take our blood pressure right now?
12:13
No, I don't, but I do take it on a regular basis.
12:15
I do have a blood pressure cuff up in the bedroom because I do
12:18
have high blood pressure I am on meds for it yeah and what's
12:21
funny so a couple about a couple years ago I had a really bad
12:24
gout issue in my foot because. I remember that.
12:26
Yeah, because I'm old and. You're not as.
12:28
Old and I had, I know and I had high blood, high blood pressure.
12:32
So the doctor specifically put me on Losartan, which hits the
12:36
gout and the blood pressure. And ever since then my blood
12:38
pressure's been fine. I haven't had gout.
12:40
So that's. Good.
12:41
How often do you take a blood? Pressure I take the pill take
12:44
the pill every day, but I. Don't want to know that.
12:46
Blood pressure, I mean, at this point it's more like once a
12:48
month because I'm at a normal level now.
12:50
So I just periodically check it, but I was checking it like every
12:52
week for a while. You're better than me.
12:54
I mean, I also have a slightly elevated blood pressure and I
12:57
take a small milligrams of of of medicine.
13:00
OK, And I do take my blood pressure.
13:02
I have a cuff as well but I just don't do it regularly probably
13:05
should I know? Yeah, yeah.
13:06
Because, you know, we're old now.
13:07
It's what we do. There's Nikki's going to get
13:09
after me. Yeah, we we get together and we
13:11
talk about our maladies. Pretty much it.
13:14
Alright, then you get the next one, OK?
13:15
Water intake about 3.7 liters for men and 2.7 liters for women
13:19
daily that sounds. Like a lot, doesn't it?
13:21
Let's let's back up. First of all, liters.
13:24
Yeah, really is We're in America, right?
13:27
With a big old M, What the hell is a leader?
13:29
We don't talk about leaders. Don't you buy a liter of pop?
13:32
No. I mean soda 'cause I don't like
13:34
the word. I bought a 20 oz bottle.
13:36
I don't buy a leader. Come on, If America would have
13:39
gone to the metric system when they tried, yes, everything
13:42
would have been better. And they totally should have
13:44
back in the 70s. Now we're never going to change
13:46
'cause we're stubborn and old. Right.
13:47
But come on, metric system is way easier.
13:50
I'm sure imperialism, I'm sure it is.
13:51
And the what it's called and the day and a half we spent in
13:53
Canada, I hated it. I hated KMH 'cause I didn't know
13:56
how fast we were going. Oh my gosh, Rob, I know.
13:59
It's horrible all. Right, all right, Fact Check
14:01
this for me. All right.
14:02
It's Fact Check. So that is correct.
14:04
The US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and
14:07
Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is.
14:11
See, I broke it down. For you.
14:12
Thank you. About 15 1/2 cups, which is 3.7
14:15
liters of fluids a daily for men, and about 11 1/2 cups 2.7
14:20
liters of fluids a day for women.
14:22
So I was watching this thing and then and, you know, there's the
14:25
whole, I don't remember what it's called, on a water diet.
14:27
So drink all this gallons of water, which is actually bad for
14:30
you. Yeah, you can't.
14:31
Drink too much, you can be on yourself basically.
14:33
And there was some stat about this big amount of water, and
14:36
I'm like, is that right? So I actually converted it over
14:40
and it was like, yeah, that's right on the cups.
14:43
It was right on dead. On yeah, no, I I drink I I mean
14:46
the I drink more than 16 cups a day for I mean, I know for a
14:50
fact that I do, I don't I get a big, big Stanley.
14:52
So how many ounces of that I should do the mathemat So 15?
14:55
Cups you should know when you bought your Stanley.
14:57
It's 8 oz a cup, right? OK, so this is about 120 a 125
15:01
oz. My big Stanley is 40 oz and I
15:05
drink at least two of those a day.
15:06
So that's there's 80 right there.
15:08
And I do drink other. He's doing math right now, guys.
15:10
I. Usually see.
15:11
Can you see my head just spinning right now?
15:13
Math. I see smoke.
15:14
Coming out of no. Again, it's not.
15:16
It's not in here, but I have read that any kind of liquid
15:20
would constitute water more or less.
15:22
Like you drink coffee and you drink pop and you drink other,
15:25
you drink a slushie. It's more the liquid intake than
15:27
just straight water. Now yes, you do want to get a
15:29
certain amount of water. But see, I am in the belief that
15:34
coffee is made-up of water. Yes it is.
15:37
So I'm getting my full amount of water I need with my coffee
15:42
intake. You drink 15 cups of coffee and
15:45
I don't. Drink 15 cups but I will have
15:47
more than one or two. Yes, yes.
15:49
See, I think in my world, in your world, I think that counts.
15:52
OK, I'm with you. I like that.
15:54
Where? Where are we now?
15:55
We're in the resting heart rate. Thank you.
15:56
Resting heart rate, let me say, all right, the meme says normal
16:01
is 60 to 100 beats per minute is healthy.
16:04
OK, I don't know how to quantify that.
16:06
I really don't have any idea. But I fact checked it and for
16:09
most adults the resting heart rate between 60 and 100 beats
16:12
per minute is normal. OK, so even 100 is normal.
16:16
That seems high. That seems high, doesn't it?
16:17
Yeah, I thought the same. OK.
16:19
However, the rate can be affected by factors such as
16:22
stress, anxiety, hormones, medication and how physically
16:26
you physically active you. OK, there's the rub, right?
16:28
There, that's my problem. An athlete or more active person
16:32
may have a resting heart rate that is as low as 40 beats per
16:36
minute. OK.
16:36
Here's what we need to happen. We need everyday.
16:39
We need leaves fall off the trees.
16:40
We need snow to fall on the ground.
16:42
So we get out and get rid of the leaves and get rid of the snow
16:45
every day because because you know, if if we don't have a
16:47
purpose to go outside and just something, we're just not going.
16:49
To if I have to go out every day to shovel that driveway, even
16:52
though, yes, good for me. I'm moving out of Minnesota and
16:58
I love this state. I, I know I'm, I'm trying to get
17:01
you in some kind of some kind of exercise routine.
17:03
Oh yeah, well, there's there's more to come in the future
17:06
podcast where I make some realizations.
17:08
Oh. Really.
17:09
Yeah. Stay tuned.
17:10
I love anticipation. All right?
17:13
Is it? Is that enough about body and
17:14
health for now? I think that's enough of a body.
17:16
OK, so we can get gross. Yeah, and I like getting gross.
17:19
OK, so I think again talking about future podcasts, I do want
17:21
to get Nurse Nikki on and kind of walk through some of this for
17:24
us like a medical professional to walk through some of our.
17:27
Yeah, and, and, ER, horror stories.
17:30
Oh, she's got great. Horror stories.
17:31
I want ER, horror stories when like the blood.
17:33
Squared. Yes.
17:34
Oh, she has. Fantastic.
17:36
Stories they are. Those are the ones that I want.
17:38
All right, so future podcasts. OK, coming up.
17:40
All right. How about psychological?
17:41
Facts. Oh, scary.
17:42
All right. They're not that bad.
17:43
Yeah, well, OK. So I read this fact on the
17:46
Internet. Of course you know that's what
17:47
we're talking about. So it's true, you know, you look
17:50
like 7 other people in the world and it's true.
17:53
I read this, I really, really read this and I thought there is
17:55
no freaking way. So I guess I think we kind of
18:00
need to narrow down like look like like identical twins.
18:03
I'm going to go with no, I say people look, it's similar.
18:06
Like I can go to AI, can go to a Vikings game or Timberwolves
18:09
game and they can flash up on the board.
18:11
Hey look, it's blah blah blah is here and they do the celebrity
18:14
look likes. Well, I would say that you do
18:16
not look like every other bald man with a beard.
18:23
OK, good. And I don't look like every
18:26
other man with Gray hair. That's really, really good.
18:31
Who knows? Who knows Trivia?
18:33
OK, so. So Fact Check.
18:35
True or false? This is false.
18:37
OK, it is statistically possible but extremely unlikely that
18:42
anyone looks exactly like you. OK, while one study suggests the
18:47
odds of a perfect facial match are less than one in one
18:50
trillion my. God, one in a trillion.
18:52
Another study indicates the chance of finding a biological
18:56
doppelganger is about one in 135.
18:59
OK, that sounds legit. So these two studies are way far
19:02
apart. This means you might have
19:04
several people that who look somewhat like you, but no one
19:08
looks exactly like you. Gotcha.
19:11
Gotcha. So I'm closer to Brad Pitt than
19:12
I am to Mike Myers. You are absolutely closer to
19:16
Brad Pitt. Yes, I'm sitting across from
19:19
Brad Pitt every time I do this podcast.
19:21
That's all I want to hear, right?
19:24
So I thought that was fascinating because I always
19:27
heard that you've got to look alike somewhere in the world,
19:29
right? You're, you know, you're
19:31
doppelganger and someone who looks just like me.
19:33
And I'm like, that's one in one trillion, right?
19:36
Right. So does that also fall into the
19:37
line of there's that one perfect person for each person in this
19:40
world and. Again, there's that's another
19:42
statement. Is there a perfect person for
19:44
everyone? I think there's multiple perfect
19:46
people for every. I do too.
19:48
I do too. Fun.
19:49
All right, so next one. If a person talks themselves
19:51
often, Oh, I'm in trouble here, they're smarter than others, I'm
19:54
not in trouble anymore, OK? So you read, you read all the
19:58
information, you change your mind as you go along.
20:01
I think it's I like. That it's OK.
20:04
All right, so. So as I said, if you talk to
20:06
yourself, you're smarter than others.
20:08
So is this true? This is false.
20:12
Talk to yourself does not necessarily mean someone is
20:14
smarter than others, but it can be a sign of a sharp mind and is
20:17
a common practice with several cognitive benefits.
20:20
Research suggests it can help with problem solving, organizing
20:23
thoughts, staying focused, and even improving memory.
20:27
For some, it is simply a way to process thoughts, especially for
20:30
those who are auditory learners. Yeah, for me for sure.
20:34
As I work all day long, I talk to myself and it's a way for me
20:36
to remember what I'm doing. See, I'm more of a visual
20:39
learner, not auditory like I need pictures.
20:42
You you have to. OK, I need to.
20:43
I do both, yeah, But I'm talking to myself.
20:46
Not necessarily the task I'm doing, but it might be something
20:50
else that's going on and I'm remembering them because I'm
20:53
verbalizing it. Sure.
20:54
I suppose because we are doing a podcast.
20:56
I should say that I do prefer auditory learning though,
20:58
shouldn't I? Sure, because you you read the
21:01
script right, right. Yes.
21:03
You know, and I also find the the same is style of that is if
21:08
I write it down. Oh yeah.
21:09
So if I'm in a meeting, I'm writing notes because I'm not
21:12
necessarily going to refer to all of them, but I'll remember
21:15
them because I wrote it. So when you were like studying
21:18
in high school, college and all the stuff, how did you say?
21:20
Like were you like a flash card person or you just constant
21:23
reading or were you a cram in the last two hours?
21:25
What kind of learner were you? I didn't study.
21:29
Ever. It was a it was a crash and burn
21:31
at the end. Crash and burn.
21:32
Yeah, crash and burn. OK.
21:33
And I never did well. Gotcha, gotcha.
21:35
But if it was art related, yeah then I would doodle.
21:39
Sure I would. Actually, and I did this, I do
21:41
this in work meetings today is if I'm, since it's all about
21:45
design and graphic design, yeah, I will draw my thoughts.
21:50
So I'm thinking of, you know, whatever we're talking about, it
21:53
might have this design aspect and it'll flow into whatever you
21:56
know, and I'll draw it while I'm talking.
21:59
And so I'll get my idea without having to hand write it.
22:01
I'll draw my picture and that's how I'll remember what I was
22:04
going to do. I have to take state tests for
22:07
licensing for my job and the way I have to learn is I have to
22:10
constantly read the materials over and over and over and over.
22:14
So more of a memorization. I have to, I have to, if I just,
22:16
yeah, if I gloss over to try and do, I can't do flash cards.
22:19
That doesn't work for me. And just I have to read it over
22:21
and over and over and over, which is very draining.
22:23
Unless you're in a spelling bee. Flashback.
22:29
Flashback to the previous podcast Go.
22:31
Alright OK so I have another one.
22:33
OK so I read middle age starts at 38 not 50.
22:37
Ohh, that means we're way older. Yeah, we're like.
22:41
Dead right? Oh, this could be trouble.
22:44
So Fact Check this is false. Whoo OK. 38 is not typically
22:50
considered middle age, which is generally seen as starting
22:53
between 40 and 45. However, perceptions vary with
22:57
some sources placing the start of middle age around 35 to 40.
23:01
Most dictionaries and studies suggest middle-aged start
23:04
approximately 45 years old. Yeah, I, I, yeah, I think 45
23:07
starts that makes good. 45 is half a 90.
23:09
And that's kind of what I've always thought in the late 40s.
23:12
Right. I mean, I think the source is
23:14
the statue where the source is placed in the start of middle
23:17
life from 35 to 40. We're clearly 20 year old.
23:19
Sure. Yeah, it's a young people who
23:21
are writing that content. Exactly right.
23:24
And so like a a teenager, but middle age starts at 38.
23:28
I'll never live to that. I'll never be 40.
23:30
Yeah, just wait, buddy. It's coming quick.
23:34
Here's what I cannot relate with.
23:35
Multitasking is a myth. It is.
23:38
Yes. Yes, you.
23:39
Know it is. That's true.
23:40
Multitasking is a myth. Is it a myth?
23:43
This is true. Let's Fact Check.
23:45
The brain is simply rapidly switching between tasks, which
23:48
leads to exhaustion and reduced efficiency.
23:50
The effectiveness of multitasking is generally
23:52
disputed. While some studies suggest that
23:54
certain individuals can perform multiple tasks simultaneously
23:57
with minimal impairment, most research indicates that
24:00
multitasking is inefficient and can lead to negative
24:02
consequences. Yeah, I don't think I multitask
24:05
well. I do switch between projects,
24:07
but I can't do two of them at the same time.
24:09
I think this is. Clearly a gender based question
24:12
because as a guy I cannot multitask, but my wife seems to
24:15
be a master at it. She's just switching between
24:17
topics fast. Is that multitasking or is that
24:20
just on and off switch? I'm giving her props the same as
24:23
multitasking, OK? All right, way to go, Tammy.
24:25
Right. Exactly.
24:28
All right, let's get into some food facts.
24:30
Like food? So processed meats like sausage
24:33
and bacon are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, the same
24:37
category. Tobacco.
24:38
Okay, that clearly can't be true because I love both of those.
24:41
No, I mean bacon, come on. Right.
24:43
All right. So I fact checked it.
24:44
Yes. Man, you're ruining everything
24:47
for me. The International Agency of
24:49
Research of Cancer, the IRC, classifies processed meats like
24:54
sausage and bacon as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning they are
24:58
known to cause cancer in humans. This classification is based on
25:02
evidence linking processed meat consumption in an increased risk
25:06
of colon cancer. It's a long pause.
25:09
It's a long pause. I'm debating my life choices at
25:13
this point. I love sausage, I love bacon.
25:16
That and that's clearly not going to change.
25:18
They're my two favorite meats. Right.
25:21
Yeah, I would I. Would eat sausage over steak.
25:23
Why would you even put this fact out there?
25:24
Like why? Because it was social sad.
25:29
Ohh my. Gosh, it's just all changes
25:30
everything. I mean, I'm not gonna stop.
25:32
Well, no, you're still gonna just eat in moderation.
25:34
Yeah, well. Just don't wrap bacon around
25:36
everything well. I have a history of colon cancer
25:38
in my family so I have to go get that stupid direct old thing
25:41
every five years anyway, so might as well live it on.
25:44
Power to it. It's for you, right?
25:46
Do you get that? What's that little character in
25:48
the square box that walks? No, no, the no.
25:52
I go in the. Mail I I get the I get the
25:54
camera up the shoe, which is what I get so.
25:57
Camera up the shoe. Yeah, good times.
25:59
And honestly, that process isn't bad at all.
26:00
It's the damn prep. I hate the prep.
26:02
Oh, so I had that and I thought the prep was easy.
26:05
Oh, it was. It was no big deal.
26:06
Oh. It was horrible, horrible,
26:07
horrible process. Anyway, next one marshmallows
26:10
are just two chemicals away from being.
26:12
Plastic. So I've heard this for a long
26:14
time. I have two and and to this day I
26:17
don't eat marshmallows because I think that it's going to be like
26:20
form plastic. Well, we're going to change
26:21
that, because that's false. Is it false?
26:23
That's what it says, yes. Marshmallows are not just two
26:26
chemicals away from being plastic.
26:27
This is a misunderstanding. Marshmallows are a foam made of
26:30
sugar, corn syrup, water, and gelatin, while plastic is a
26:34
synthetic polymer. Though both are made of carbon
26:37
based molecules, the structures are fundamentally different.
26:39
Marshall Mellow is sugar gelatin network trapping air and plastic
26:42
is a long chain of repeating monomer units, according to the
26:45
American Chemical Society. So not the same.
26:47
OK this is amazing. So I can go back eating
26:50
marshmallows again? Totally can.
26:52
Did you ever play Chubby Bunny? OK, First off, before you held
26:57
that come from, yes, of course I play chubby Bunny.
26:59
Well, so it's marshmallows. Yeah.
27:01
Around the campfire, Yes. How many can get in your mouth
27:03
and say the words Chubby Bunny? Chubby Bunny.
27:05
Do you have a record? That I remember, yeah.
27:08
I mean, I'm. It was definitely in the teens,
27:10
but beyond that I have no. Idea I did get to 20 OHK.
27:12
OK, I don't think I got to 20. But you know, this is run camp
27:15
for M But mind you, I'm an adult.
27:18
I am not a kid doing this, I'm an adult.
27:20
Your mouth is much larger now than it was when you were a kid.
27:22
Yeah, well, there's everything's bigger.
27:24
Over here. OK, so marshmallows may not be
27:27
plastic, but gelatin, which, by the way, I'm a huge fan of
27:29
jello. OK, did you know that gelatin is
27:32
a protein derived from animal collagen, primarily sourced from
27:35
the skin, bones, and collective tissues of animals like cows and
27:38
pigs? I did know that and you know
27:40
what? Why I do not eat jello to this
27:43
David when I found out that fact.
27:44
See I this is worse than the bacon fact.
27:46
I don't eat jello at all, ever. It's a process.
27:48
It's processed by boiling these animals parts, which breaks down
27:51
the collagen into a substance that solidifies it to a jello
27:54
one. That's how they make jello.
27:57
Now I will do a jello shot, OK? Well, that there's alcohol, so
28:00
of course you will. Still do that, but I'm going to
28:03
have a jello salad. No, thank you.
28:04
Yeah, that OK. The sausage and the bacon
28:07
doesn't bother me that much. The gelatin one, that kind of
28:09
bugs me a little. Bit so do you eat jello salads
28:12
with fruit in them? Not anymore, clearly.
28:15
No, I can't tell you. Last time I had a bowl of jello,
28:18
and I think that may, whenever it was, may have been my last
28:21
one. This is gross.
28:23
That's awesome. Great.
28:24
Good times. OK, here's 1.
28:26
Honey never spoils. OK.
28:28
Did you know that? I did not know so.
28:30
Fact Check it is true. Okay.
28:33
But it can change in appearance and texture over time due to the
28:36
high sugar and low water content.
28:38
That's what I'm thinking of because the bottle gets all
28:40
crusty and gross after. Yeah, that's what it is.
28:41
Okay, so it's not spoiled. If exposed to moisture and other
28:44
contaminants, it can ferment and grow mold, making it unsafe to
28:48
eat. To prevent this, always store in
28:50
an airtight container in a cool, dry place and use clean utensils
28:54
when taking it out. OK, so if it does crystallize,
28:57
what do you? Do throw it out.
28:58
No, you do not. We.
29:01
Buy the little bottles. We don't.
29:02
We don't buy you. Don't throw it out.
29:04
What do you do? You just put the bottle in hot
29:06
water and it melts and it's honey.
29:09
Interesting, I don't use honey a lot to begin with so it's not
29:12
it's not like a staple in my regular diet.
29:16
We've use use honey more now as a replacement for sweeteners.
29:20
OK, so that we use honey instead because it's natural.
29:23
Sure, but there's still sugar in there.
29:24
Natural sugar comes from the bees vomit.
29:27
Well, OK, I mean, is it all sugar Natural, if you think
29:31
about it, sugar. Cane, is that natural?
29:34
Sure, Yeah, 'cause. It has to be grown.
29:35
I love sugar, right? OK, here's another one.
29:41
My wife loves Salaman farm. Raised salmon is not pink, it's
29:45
Gray. No, it's not.
29:48
I only see pink salmon. I only see pink.
29:49
I've never seen Gray. I've.
29:50
Never seen Gray salmon. Well, Fact Check it's true.
29:54
Farm raised salmon is naturally Gray or pale white because the
29:57
diet does not contain the pigments found in its wild diet.
30:01
Oh, gross. To achieve the pinkish orange
30:03
color consumers expect, farmers add artificial or natural stuff
30:07
to the feed. I'm going to try that word dude.
30:10
They add some to the feed which colours the fish's flesh.
30:13
The intensity of the pink colour make can vary depending on how
30:15
much additive is added to the feed.
30:17
So that is why my wife is constantly saying we have to buy
30:21
wild caught salmon. OK, It cannot be farm raised
30:24
salmon. She's very adamant about that.
30:25
Sure. And I never really knew why I
30:27
knew it was it was healthier. OK, so again, you know, Costco
30:30
devotee here, I only see pink salmon in like the freezer or
30:35
wherever at Costco. I've never seen a grey salmon
30:38
ever there. No, because obviously they're
30:39
injecting pink. But but they they, they're
30:42
hippie dipping like they're organic crap.
30:43
I mean, so why is there no Gray salmon there?
30:45
Farm raiser. They're farmers.
30:47
They're making a pink. Nice, I the shenanigans are
30:50
afoot. The shenanigans are afoot.
30:54
I love that. All right, OK, here's one It
30:56
takes seven years for chewing gum to digest in your stomach.
31:00
Oh that's totally true. I heard that from day one as a
31:01
kid from. A child day one.
31:03
That's what my parents and my grandmother's would tell me this
31:06
all the time. All the time.
31:07
So Fact Check. Guess what?
31:09
That's false. My entire childhood.
31:12
You know, right, You're second guessing everything you're
31:16
chewing. Gum consists of natural and
31:18
synthetic palm polymers, rubber flavors, and sweeteners.
31:22
The only thing the stomach cannot digest is the actual gum
31:25
base itself, but it doesn't mean it will just remain in the
31:29
stomach forever. It will simply leave the body
31:32
the way everything else does. So it just takes a ride down the
31:34
chute eventually is whatever. I love your analogies.
31:37
Takes a ride down the chute. I love that, yes.
31:40
It's like but it kind of falls the same way.
31:42
Why did they tell us that when we were kids?
31:45
That it saves you something. Don't solve your gum and stay in
31:47
your stomach for seven years. Dude, parents said nothing but
31:50
lie to us as kids in the 70s. I know.
31:52
Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Gum, the list goes on and.
31:55
On You're ruining it for all of our young.
31:57
Listeners, I'm not ruining anything to say.
32:00
All right, let's do some historical.
32:02
Facts. OK, I love historical.
32:03
Facts The Great Wall of China is visible from space.
32:06
No, I don't believe that. You don't believe that?
32:07
No. I believe it, but contrary to
32:10
the popular the Great Wall of China is not visible from the
32:13
Moon. Even from Earth's orbit,
32:15
astronauts can only see it with magnification, while city lights
32:17
are clearly visible. That makes complete sense to me
32:20
because I don't know how you could see that, even though I've
32:23
read this before and obviously I found it for this.
32:26
And I think people put that in that perspective like because
32:28
it's so big, like you can totally see it from space like
32:31
that. That's the genesis of it.
32:33
Right, exactly. How about this one?
32:35
The Vikings wore horned helmets. Yes they did, Skull.
32:39
Only the Vikings team fact checked that and it is false.
32:45
The image of the Viking warriors wearing helmets with horns is
32:49
not based on historical fact. It is a fictional design
32:52
popularized by a 19th century costume designer for Wagarian
32:56
operas. And so take that and the
32:58
Minnesota Vikings. And the Minnesota Vikings made
33:00
it worse by always wearing horns.
33:02
And and and the gold dreadlocks are the gold gold braid with the
33:05
with the with the horns you see. The Vikings always had gold
33:08
braids. Of course they did.
33:11
Gladiators always fought to the death.
33:13
Don't they? That's what all the movies.
33:14
Every single movie they fight to the death, right?
33:16
Yeah, but this is false. Death matches, right?
33:18
Death matches were rare. Gladiators were expensive
33:21
investments. Most bouts ended with one
33:23
fighter was wounded or yielded. OK.
33:25
So again, Hollywood lies to. It I just think Hollywood is
33:29
always right. Well, if it's on the Internet or
33:31
on a movie, it's true. How about this one though?
33:33
Witches were burned in Salem. Of course they were.
33:36
Fact Check. This is actually false.
33:38
Let's get out. None of the accused witches in
33:40
this 1692 Salem trials were burned.
33:43
However, nineteen of them were hanged and one man was pressed
33:46
to death with stone. That's a tough way to call.
33:50
That's. Right.
33:51
Ouch. But that's all we ever hear is
33:54
the fact that they burn the witches.
33:57
Right. Yeah, that was the whole again.
33:58
It's in a movie. Yeah, I suppose it came from
34:00
literature and movies, probably all right.
34:03
So a couple quickies to end up here.
34:04
Goldfish only have a three second memory.
34:06
That's true, isn't it? Hi, I'm Tom.
34:09
Hi, I'm Tom. I'm glad you caught that
34:12
reference. Isn't that a far side joke or
34:17
something? No, it's from 51st AIDS.
34:19
Oh, I know what you're talking about.
34:21
Yeah, and And then he makes it appear another movie.
34:23
Yeah. Then he makes it another
34:24
appearance and blended Adam Sandler flicks.
34:26
Yeah. Yeah.
34:26
Hi, I'm Tom. No, this is false.
34:29
In reality, they have memories that can last for several
34:31
months. Studies show goldfish can learn
34:33
to associate sounds with food, recognize specific times for
34:36
feeding. Oh, crap.
34:37
I gotta feed my wife's fish. She has been here all week.
34:39
Oh. Way to think of that now while
34:41
we're. Talking about goldfish, Don't
34:43
tell her specifically for feeding and even be trained to
34:47
perform complex tasks like pulling levers or navigating
34:50
mazes. The myth may have originated
34:52
from people keeping goldfish in small bowls and observing
34:55
repetitive behaviors, but this does not reflect their true
34:58
cognitive abilities. So, OK, wait a minute, a
35:02
goldfish can pull a lever? Right I I want to see that.
35:07
So then also you're saying that be like a goldfish is just
35:10
wrong. It's wrong.
35:11
It's the opposite meaning be like a goldfish is like good
35:13
memory. Again, our parents lying to us.
35:17
Here's another one. Bats are blind.
35:19
Well, something about Sonar, right?
35:22
So Fact Check, all bats have functional eyes and many have
35:25
very good vision, especially fruit bats.
35:28
Speedy little eyes, too. Well, some species have poor
35:31
eyesight. They use a sophisticated form of
35:34
echolocation to navigate and hunt in the dark, which allows
35:38
them to see, quote UN quote their surroundings with sound.
35:42
Yeah, Beady. Look, we had bats in our house
35:44
at one point, so that's why I'm not a fan of bats.
35:46
I had one bat in my house. Yeah, I'm not a fan.
35:49
A penny drop from a great height can kill someone.
35:52
I've heard this all my life. So again parents, this is false.
35:56
A penny small mass in flat shape means it reaches a slow constant
36:00
speed called terminal velocity due to air resistance, and it
36:04
would likely feel like a sting, not a lethal blow.
36:07
The impact might be comparable to being flicked in the head
36:09
with your finger flick, but not lethal force.
36:12
The idea persists because objects with more mass and a
36:14
more aerodynamic shape can reach dangerous speeds, but a penny is
36:17
not one of them. And that completely makes sense.
36:19
I mean, it's so small, it's so light.
36:21
And in a couple years pennies apparently going to be rare.
36:23
We're not making them anymore, so.
36:24
Yeah, I guess they just stopped making them so.
36:26
Do we change this to a nickel? Does that change this this
36:28
theory if we go to nickels or quarters?
36:29
OK. Terminal velocity of a nickel is
36:31
not going to be much more than a penny.
36:34
It's true. All right, one more go for.
36:36
It OK lightning never strikes the same place twice.
36:40
I've heard this a lot too. Yeah, I've heard this before
36:41
too. Fact Check.
36:42
This is false because lightning follows the path of least
36:46
resistance, frequently striking tall, isolated objects multiple
36:50
times, especially during the same storm.
36:52
The Empire State Building is a prime example, getting hit
36:55
around 25 times per year, sometimes multiple times in a
36:58
single storm. Leaving this myth can be
37:00
dangerous as it is not based on scientific principles, but
37:03
rather on an analogy for bad luck.
37:06
Yeah, that is bad luck. That's bad luck, so and that
37:08
makes sense. Empire State Building is a great
37:09
example. I think it's hit all the time,
37:11
right? That's why they make lightning
37:12
rods. It just brings the lighting down
37:14
to the ground and grounds it, yeah.
37:16
So I think that's it. So what you're saying is that I
37:19
shouldn't believe everything I read on the Internet?
37:21
Well damn right I'm saying that for. 29.
37:25
Podcasts now? Yeah, you have.
37:27
But I can't get past the fact that I believe what I see.
37:30
And read I know. And if you'd be so kind to

37:55
You got one more thing. I got one more thing.
37:57
Even though Brian always says he believes everything he reads on
37:59
the Internet, now you know it's not all true.
38:03
Most of it is true. But if you have to Fact Check
38:05
all of your information, damn, that's a lot of extra work.
38:08
Yeah, it does. All right, bye, everyone.
38:10
Bye. The Internet has filled me with
38:13
false hope, Rob.
