Transcript
- 0:12All right it's that time again kids we're back to citizen frames halloween month
- 0:17and a half which is actually now going to be probably halloween month and three
- 0:21quarters i pay months yeah because
- 0:23we've added to the library here because we're kind all right well I am.
- 0:29Trevor. Well, that's debatable.
- 0:32We have a viewer who wants us to do a review for them.
- 0:36And we decided to pepper it because
- 0:38it's a good movie to do for Halloween month and three quarters now.
- 0:43And Trevor says, fuck him. I don't care about our viewers. And I say, whoa, what?
- 0:49He's a very loyal listener. He's like, fuck him.
- 0:53I want to, don't you take away from my Hallmark movie that I'm about to pick.
- 0:57So i would never say that frank
- 1:00no no no frank
- 1:03uh sent me an email very upset with some of the words you said to
- 1:06him but yeah we're gonna do that next we're
- 1:09peppering werewolves and then we've
- 1:12got barbarian then we're doing weapons then we're going to actually do a film
- 1:21that did well independent it's a Stephen King film called The Long Walk that's
- 1:26now that's now available on demand so we thought that'd be fun to pepper that
- 1:29in and then we'll end with,
- 1:32we started with the Italian horror we'll end with Italian horror with Dario
- 1:35Argento's probably most beloved film Suspiria,
- 1:39And so that should take us far pretty much to the end of November.
- 1:45Or the soundbar, we'll see. Yeah, it would be double because we're actually
- 1:49going to do, we're going to try to do another Stephen King. The Running Man
- 1:52is coming out in November.
- 1:55So we might do, we did the Running Man before, but we might just do a double feature on that one.
- 2:00The original Running Man and the new Running Man as one big podcast special.
- 2:05I think that'd be kind of fun.
- 2:06Yeah. I am a big fan of the original. Yeah, I'm a big fan. It's Arnie.
- 2:11Well, it's Yaffa Koto in a very tightly fit suit. You seem to always go to that.
- 2:17That's cool, man. That's your bell. Ring it. That's cool, man.
- 2:22That's cool. Two yards. You know, embrace Trevor. Embrace Yaffa Koto in tights. That's fine.
- 2:29Yeah. I'll be back. Only in a rerun. Yeah.
- 2:34But hey, before we start, this is spoiler filled from the very opening.
- 2:39So if you have not seen Black Phone 2, where the fuck have you been?
- 2:43Everyone else is seeing it. Made a lot of money.
- 2:46Very happy to hear that. And so if you haven't seen it, well,
- 2:50you're screwed because I'm about to spoil it.
- 2:54I had to sit my coffee there. Right. Waking you up, because this is another
- 2:59early morning recording we're doing. Yeah, we're doing a couple of these.
- 3:03I had to interrupt my beauty sleep, just, you know, because I'm so committed
- 3:08to, you know, sort of doing these podcasts.
- 3:11But there you go. Fuck that.
- 3:15Fuck that.
- 3:17Yeah, Blackporn 2. All these sequels. You know,
- 3:22there wasn't supposed to be a sequel to this and obviously it's,
- 3:27you know come on I get the studios come on man we can use the money here what
- 3:30the fuck and we need another one and good on the studio for letting Scott Derrickson
- 3:35have free range Scott Derrickson is one of my favorite horror directors out there,
- 3:41starting with of course the haunting of the exorcism of Emily Rose Sinister
- 3:45he just has very good dark tales also I would add that
- 3:50Joe Hill, who wrote the original short story for the original film,
- 3:55obviously, had some input in this.
- 3:58Apparently, Scott Dirickson phoned him or something and said,
- 4:02well, Joe, what do you reckon?
- 4:04And, you know, in terms of the story, and Joe Hill apparently said just basically
- 4:09one sentence, Finney gets a phone call, it's a grabber, and he's in hell.
- 4:16And then they basically ran with that, and built on that. Yeah,
- 4:20I was, when they announced a sequel, I'm like, oh boy, because I like the grabber.
- 4:26I know you were on the fence with it. You said it was good, but it wasn't,
- 4:29you know, you wanted a little more.
- 4:31But I enjoyed it because it was subtle with the fantasy element.
- 4:36Obviously, you had to have that fantasy element.
- 4:37And I really enjoyed Gwen's, Madeline McGraw's performance as Gwen.
- 4:44And, heads up, guys, C again still is the show. She's very good.
- 4:50She has a bright future ahead of her. Yeah.
- 4:52And so does the young actor who plays Finney, to be fair. Yeah,
- 4:55Mason Thames. He's a, you know, he's a trade ballet dancer.
- 4:59Right, right. There you go. But, yeah, you know, you keep the source material.
- 5:05I always say if you're doing a sequel, keep true to the original,
- 5:08but tweak it and make it your own.
- 5:10They fucking do that here. i was concerned that
- 5:13they were going to go the freddy krueger route but they don't
- 5:16they well they do i'm not going to say they don't they do but
- 5:20it's a lot better executed i
- 5:23guess you could say and how they handle it and how they handle unlike how they
- 5:28handled nightmare on elm street part two which was fucking god-awful well there's
- 5:32definitely allusions to certainly the first nightmare on elm street and the
- 5:36third one but in terms of the portrayal of the grabber it's very,
- 5:42it's still very dark and sinister as opposed to the route that went with Freddy
- 5:46Krueger where after the first one,
- 5:48he became a sort of wisecracking dark comedy character.
- 5:52Yeah. So yeah, basically the grabber's not doing a rap or anything in this you
- 5:57know, or welcome to primetime bitch, you know.
- 6:01Yeah, he has his jokes in this, the grabber but they're sinister, they're not nice.
- 6:06They're dark. But yeah, he's
- 6:09got the original team back he's kind of one thing i want to
- 6:11bring up the the the music is by a guy
- 6:14called attic atticus derrickson i'm assuming there's a relation there i was
- 6:19like i'm not telling you it's a superb score score is like very which is funny
- 6:23because it almost has a 90s nails feel to it which is atticus atticus and trett
- 6:29resner both work do 90s nails but this is a different atticus,
- 6:33That's Atticus Finch, I believe, who's in Nine Inch Nails. This is Atticus Derrickson.
- 6:39But yeah, there's a Nine Inch Nails vibe to it. And we'll dive into the intro real quick here.
- 6:43But I also want to give a massive shout out because I'm not sure how the film
- 6:47was shot, to be honest with you, to the DP. His name is Pari Ekberg.
- 6:52And the film was shot in Ontario, I believe, in Canada.
- 6:56And I was a little confused what was shot outside.
- 7:02And it almost feels like the campground, besides some of the outdoor shots,
- 7:06but there's one of the famous locations is a phone booth by a lake.
- 7:10It almost feels like it's set on a stage with like a matte painting in the background
- 7:15of Vaxo Lake and the mountains and stuff. It's beautiful.
- 7:19It almost plays like, this film, I know it sounds funny, almost beside,
- 7:23before we get to the big extravaganza ending,
- 7:26the film almost plays like a stage play and almost
- 7:29like a 10 Little Indians like an egg of the Christie
- 7:32mystery because it's a lot more isolated
- 7:35than when we had it for the first one Well I didn't get
- 7:38the sort of you know you were saying with the phone
- 7:41booth the phone box essentially at the
- 7:44lake I didn't get sort of vibes of it felt
- 7:47like a matte painting and stuff but you know it's beautiful scenery obviously
- 7:50be it in Ontario or wherever it is you know in Canada but I would say the way
- 7:55it's filmed you know the different styles of filming and the different styles
- 8:00of look for the dream sequences work really effectively well. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:06Scott Derrickson. It looks, it's a beautiful looking film. Scott Derrickson.
- 8:10Overall. Scott Derrickson loves Super 8.
- 8:13Yeah. He made it famous in Sinister.
- 8:17I would say as well regarding the score on top of that, the soundtrack there's
- 8:24some great songs that are part of the soundtrack and not the score,
- 8:29there's a use of Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall the album version Another
- 8:36Brick in the Wall Part 1 which is absolutely fantastic really effective.
- 8:40Wasn't that a cover song or was that the actual Pink Floyd?
- 8:43No, no, that's the actual See, there's another brick on the wall,
- 8:46parts one, two, and three.
- 8:48And the more famous one is part two, you know, where it's the kids and stuff going.
- 8:52But this is part one. So it is Pink Floyd, but it's the part one from the album.
- 8:57All right, guys. As we mentioned, spoiler filled. So we're going to jump into this right now.
- 9:02All right. We got Mason Thames, who plays Finn. Ethan Hawke,
- 9:05who's the grabber. Madeline McCraw is Gwen. Jerry Davis, he's back, is Pa.
- 9:09Miguel Mora, good on him. He's a returning actor. He plays a character called Ernesto.
- 9:15He played one of the victims in the last film. He played Ernesto's brother who
- 9:20died, who was Robin in the last film.
- 9:23I'd love to see him. Damien Bishur, he plays Mando. I've always been a fan of
- 9:28his ever since I saw him in The Hateful Eight.
- 9:30Then you got Hope, Felix, and Barbara and Kenneth, who are the Christians.
- 9:35They were annoying as fuck.
- 9:36They were about to be. Here's the plot, guys. So...
- 9:41Unplug, you know, unplug your ears. All right, so around 1954,
- 9:45three children are killed and have vanished.
- 9:48Their names are Felix, Cal, and Spike.
- 9:51They die horribly. One is burned alive and then chopped up. One is cut in half on the face.
- 9:58And the other one is, I think, drowned. I can't remember what happened to the other one.
- 10:03They can't find the bodies. And the mystery is never solved.
- 10:07But this was done by a younger grabber. This is when the Grabber was just a kid.
- 10:12This is how he started off on his dark journey. Exactly.
- 10:17Now, the children's spirits are lingering, giving the Grabber power to return
- 10:21as a supernatural entity.
- 10:23Finn and Gwen must find the remains of these three boys to be able to defeat
- 10:29the Grabber. So there's your plot.
- 10:31Very, very nightmare in Upstreet, to be honest with you. And they also,
- 10:35yeah, they end up going to this camp, and they essentially sign up to train for it on the surface.
- 10:44But really what they're doing is it's a Christian camp and they basically sign
- 10:48up to basically be Christian counsellors, but really they're out to stop the grabber.
- 10:54You know what really stuck out for me?
- 10:57The Latino girl who is at the camp. Yes, Jane.
- 11:03Yes. You know what she was in recently? A working man with Jason Statham.
- 11:08You work with Jason Statham, you get roles.
- 11:12Well, this is it. The beekeeper. That's not, that's a beekeeper.
- 11:17That's a lot better. Sounds just like him.
- 11:19All right, the movie takes place four years later.
- 11:23And everything's kind of still the same. Gwen and Finn is kind of,
- 11:29has not really bounced back.
- 11:31He's not dealing well with how-
- 11:32He's angry. How would happen with the grabber. He's very angry, upset.
- 11:37One thing this film gets right, and it's wonderful, is the character arcs.
- 11:42And the character arcs in this
- 11:44one, and you don't get that with horror films a lot. You really don't.
- 11:47So they really hit it home, and it's the actor's performance of Sell It, to be honest with you.
- 11:52But yeah, so we open up with a phone call.
- 11:57What's it, 1954, I guess? A young lady gets a phone call, and she's having a
- 12:02conversation with somebody.
- 12:03We don't know what that conversation is. This phone booth's in the middle of
- 12:06a camp right now overlooking the lake.
- 12:09And the phone just connects, and then we fade to modern day.
- 12:15Well, I think it's the 80s now.
- 12:17Early 80s. Four years later. So we don't know about the phone call,
- 12:21what that was all about as of yet.
- 12:23I love films where sequel events come full circle.
- 12:27You know what I mean? We talked about that. You know, Tarantino does it all
- 12:30the time, where a scene would be peppered in, But we don't know what happened
- 12:34to that scene until about 40 minutes into it.
- 12:37Yeah. Why that scene was so- It all comes together. Yeah. As part of a narrative.
- 12:41Yeah, why that scene was so relevant.
- 12:44Now, we know the brother, he's not handling things well. He's got a violent temper.
- 12:49He's beaten the shit out of someone who made some kind of smart-ass comment
- 12:54to him, in all fairness. He's getting into fights and stuff. Yeah.
- 12:57Sounds like the kid deserved it, to be honest with you.
- 13:00Yeah, but he's- Gwen is getting nightmares now. As you guys all know from the
- 13:05last one, she had a premonition.
- 13:08Well, her premonitions are becoming more real now.
- 13:11And we find out that's the one thing she has in common with her mother.
- 13:17Yeah, it's like a sixth sense. She has a certain power, a supernatural power,
- 13:22like the mother had before her, before the mother committed suicide.
- 13:26But yes, she has sort of inherited it that sort of six cents par right?
- 13:33Yeah, and she's seeing these images of these kids underneath the water.
- 13:37Very, very, you've got to realize these are young. These are probably pre-teen
- 13:42kids, and they're coming up from underneath the water, but they're covered in ice.
- 13:47Obviously, the water's covered in ice, and they're scraping in these words,
- 13:50and she finds out their initials, WBH.
- 13:57And we'll get to that in a moment, why that's relevant.
- 14:00But she wants to find out what's going on. But she does, through these dreams,
- 14:04process of elimination, figure out it's this Alpine camp, Christian camp.
- 14:08So they sign up to get jobs to figure out what's up.
- 14:11Problem is they get snowbound at the camp. So there's only a few people here.
- 14:16And this is where the chaos begins. Great little setup. Very fun.
- 14:21Fast paced. Great dialogue.
- 14:25It doesn't mess apart. Yeah.
- 14:28And going into this, I'd read and listened to some other reviews of it,
- 14:33and people were saying, oh, it's basically Nightmare on Elm Street 3, Dream Warriors.
- 14:37So I was a little concerned, because although I'm a fan of Dream Warriors,
- 14:41it is fantasy cartoonish at times, so I was a bit concerned with those comments.
- 14:48But I would say myself, after watching it, it's more in tone and referential
- 14:56to the first Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 14:58There's one scene in particular with her, with the sister, where it's obviously
- 15:03a big reference to Tina's death in Nightmare on Elm Street 1.
- 15:07You know, it's whenever they're at the Christian camp and she's basically being
- 15:11sort of thrown about the room in her dream, but also happening in the real world
- 15:15and everybody's, you know, freaked out and stuff.
- 15:17So in terms of, you know, the references to the Nightmare on Elm Street series,
- 15:22for me it was more the first Nightmare on Elm Street.
- 15:25Yeah, that's when he's trying to throw her in the oven. Yes.
- 15:28And because the Grabber's M.O. here is he wants to get revenge on Finn because
- 15:36Finn is the one who technically killed him.
- 15:38And Grabber also finds Finn responsible for the Grabber accidentally killing
- 15:43his brother or making him kill his brother, who has a small cameo in it, by the way.
- 15:48But so the Grabber feels that you took away something I love.
- 15:54Now I have to take away something you love so that's why his target is Gwen,
- 15:58I like that I kind of like that it makes
- 16:02sense yeah and like what I said in the beginning you stick true to the original
- 16:05it does and we always think about well he's calling now well if the kids could
- 16:10make the phone calls to help Finn in the first one why can't he make phone calls
- 16:14when he's dead so they just flip the tables and I kind of enjoy that yes yeah,
- 16:21and it definitely works.
- 16:23Again, I was concerned getting into it because I thought it was going to,
- 16:27after the first one being quite grim and serious, I thought this was going to
- 16:31be silly in terms of, you know,
- 16:34them turning them into a Freddy Krueger in the sequels as opposed to the original
- 16:39Freddy Krueger in the first one.
- 16:41But no, no, it does make sense and it does work very well.
- 16:47When we're introduced to, there's only.
- 16:51There's really Mustang, Mando, Anasto, Terrence, Gwen, the Grabber,
- 16:58Finn, and then Barbara and Kenneth are really the only ones in this film because,
- 17:03like I said, they're snowbound.
- 17:05And there's one thing, a couple things I didn't like. And I wish Finn said something
- 17:12because Finn at this time was still kind of pissed and still trying to come
- 17:17to terms with what happened between him and the Grabber.
- 17:20And there's a scene where they're having breakfast with the
- 17:25counselors and so forth and mando mando
- 17:28is timing and mando's good guy he's good character don't get me wrong but he
- 17:31turns to there's rules in in their in their camp and there's the night before
- 17:37the sister went to the brother's the boy's cabin and she spent the night there
- 17:42because she was scared and having nightmares and mando goes no girls in the boys tents whatever.
- 17:50If I was Finn that would have been a good scene for him to go go fuck yourself
- 17:54that's my fucking sister you're talking about,
- 17:57well it would have played into sort of Finn's rage and I would have got all
- 18:01right on if anyone said that to me I'd be fucking what do you think me and my
- 18:05sister were doing you sick fuck,
- 18:07Yes, I know I would have. I would have called him out. Yeah,
- 18:12you know, although Finn's arc, you know, on his anger and making peace with
- 18:17his anger is sort of followed through.
- 18:21There could have been more opportunities for it to be done sort of in more detail type thing.
- 18:27I would say as well that there's also allusions.
- 18:30I'm sort of getting off point here, specifically, but there's sort of allusions
- 18:35here to the Friday the 13th series with the camp, with them being stranded in
- 18:39a camp with a basically supernatural killer on the rampage.
- 18:43Well, I do think it's a nice, I like the fact he made a first film which is
- 18:48his own, you know, something original thanks to Joe Hill and all,
- 18:53and he came up with something different.
- 18:56This one almost plays like, yeah, I'll do a sequel but I'm going to make it
- 18:59a nod to some of the films I like growing up.
- 19:02Yes. Yeah. So I did, there's definite allusions to the Friday the 13th series
- 19:07with them being at the camp. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:09Well, that's why I said you also had like an Agatha Christie feel.
- 19:13There's a great moment. Well, you said earlier that it felt like a stage play in the morning.
- 19:16I think about it. Yeah, I agree with that. And even I got a certain Hateful
- 19:21Eight vibe, which you also referenced earlier. Yeah.
- 19:24Just the fact, you know, stranded in this basically one setting and snowbound and, you know,
- 19:31there's a lot of bad stuff and violence going on so there are certain things
- 19:35going on yeah allusions to other sort of films and series and as we talk about
- 19:40it I start appreciating the film even more and I
- 19:44There's wonderful moments when Gwen is under, and she's having nightmares,
- 19:51but she's sleepwalking in the nightmares.
- 19:53So she is not sleeping.
- 19:55There's some inconsistency there.
- 19:58Sometimes she is. Sometimes she's not. But mainly when she's in a nightmare,
- 20:03she's sleepwalking or under a trance.
- 20:07And so there's a scene where everyone's trying to find her, and there's a blizzard
- 20:12going on. and she's kind of going to cabin to cabin and that's when they grab
- 20:16her, find her and try to chuck her in the oven.
- 20:19Yes, that's a very good thing. Yeah, at the same time, Finn and Ernesto and
- 20:23Ando are trying to find her and it builds tension really,
- 20:27really well because as they're trying to find her, she's being pretty much ripped
- 20:31apart and cut and there's blood everywhere and she's being brutalized.
- 20:37Yeah, it's Tina Zayeth in Nightmare on Elm Street. Yeah,
- 20:41and again, she's a 16-year-old girl on this so that
- 20:45makes it more brutal and now some people
- 20:48there's not a lot of body count and i thought about this too
- 20:51and i said well there wasn't body count in the first one besides the
- 20:55brother it the body counts already happens you know
- 20:58the missing kids that's the body count you don't need to
- 21:00see that in this one there's not a body count but
- 21:03however you do have the three missing kids that he killed there's
- 21:06body count and you see what he's done to them it's brutal I would have liked
- 21:12to have seen of the main players here at the cabin one or two deaths of them
- 21:18essentially just to create more tension and more threat from the grabber and while we don't get.
- 21:25Maybe Scott Dernickson was sort of subverting the expectations of a Slicer-type
- 21:31film where there has to be a body count.
- 21:34And, you know, fair enough if he is doing that.
- 21:39But, you know, I do feel, I know that the guy who runs this camp,
- 21:45he does get injured badly, but he doesn't die from the grabber later on.
- 21:50But, I don't know, for me personally, I do think stuff, you know,
- 21:54deaths of sort of main players does increase tension and threat of the grabber.
- 22:00I like the fact that the grabber's whole thing is Gwen, Gwen,
- 22:07Gwen. He doesn't lose focus on his target.
- 22:09So that's why the other ones kind of get a pass. Now, there's a Christian couple
- 22:14in this. Fucking hated them. I hated them.
- 22:18They get hurt and stuff pretty good because we want to see them get hurt.
- 22:22Now if you want casualties yeah let them have it but I got one flaw here and
- 22:29it could be considered a big one so we find out that,
- 22:35what's his name, Mando, bought the place years ago.
- 22:41And he promised one of the parents of the missing children that he'd find the bodies.
- 22:49Now, he's been searching for years as he's on this camp looking for these bodies.
- 22:55And so have the police and so forth. And, of course, case closed.
- 22:58Nothing we can do about it. We're done. People have given up.
- 23:01But they're like, oh, check the lake. Well, yeah.
- 23:05I would have checked the lake the first thing I would have checked yeah exactly
- 23:09the first place you would have checked or one of the first places would have
- 23:12been the lake he's like oh there's another lake just down the road here okay
- 23:17why didn't you check so I thought that was a little,
- 23:20I'm forgiving it but I thought that was a little okay come on really.
- 23:26I do feel that this is very strong overall
- 23:29in fact I would even go as far as saying I think it's better
- 23:32than the first one but one thing that
- 23:35did niggle me was the more corny cheesy stuff
- 23:38with the mother yes I said earlier
- 23:41on that she committed suicide but found out later on that she actually didn't
- 23:44it was set up and she was actually murdered by the grabber you know in one of
- 23:48the dream sequences later on but some of the stuff with the mother did feel
- 23:53a little corny to me and almost like you know those conjuring films you know
- 23:57with their cheese I thought about it and what that girl what Gwen has gone through the last two films,
- 24:03and what she went through in this one especially.
- 24:06You needed her for her arc. You needed that. She needed that moment.
- 24:10In terms of the narrative, it does work, but at times I did feel it was a little
- 24:14corny, especially at the very end. We'll talk about the ending in a moment here.
- 24:18I do like when she finds out that they're looking at a picture,
- 24:22And they say, oh, that's Bill. And it's a young kid. We find out it's a young
- 24:27version of him. It's the young grabber before he became the grabber.
- 24:30And yeah, Wild Bill, we called him. The kids were putting on the ice, Wild Bill Hickok.
- 24:35Yes. W-B-H. And that's how they put the pieces together, who this guy is. It's the grabber.
- 24:44Yeah. The conversations between him and Finn are really good.
- 24:48And you don't see much of Ethan. but there's not in it as much as you think until the finale.
- 24:54And he's heavily made up as well. What was that? You know, he's heavy with the
- 24:58makeup as well, the Grabber makeup, which I liked.
- 25:01And yeah, I think it's good with a villain like the Grabber to keep him in the
- 25:06shadows and don't have him sort of revealed.
- 25:10Whereas in the Friday the 13th, I'm sorry, the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels,
- 25:14you know, you've seen a bit too much of Freddy with his wisecracking jokes,
- 25:18but here the Grabber is kept in the shadows and I think that's the best way.
- 25:22So it makes him much more sinister.
- 25:25The original phone book, he broke his neck. Yeah. The house doesn't burn down
- 25:29or anything, right? He just kills him, breaks his neck, right?
- 25:32No, I think I would have to watch it again. I think the house might burn down. No, I think it doesn't.
- 25:38No, it doesn't. So the reason I ask that, this just makes it even more clever.
- 25:42When the grabber's revealed, his face is all horned skin. Messed up.
- 25:48He's not decaying. I think is frostbite.
- 25:51I mean, he does say as well, whatever he does, those sinister phone calls,
- 25:56that hell isn't burning because he's in hell.
- 25:58It's basically, you're freezing to death, so it's like maybe ice burns,
- 26:03you know, deep ice burns from hell.
- 26:05Or his hell, his personal hell that the grabber's in is ice-based, so I don't know.
- 26:12Yeah, but that does, he looks cool, let's just say. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
- 26:18And it's very good makeup.
- 26:20Some of the DP work in this, some of the best work is the ending sequence.
- 26:24They decide they got to go.
- 26:25The plot borrows- Comes a nice hockey star. The plot borrows from Ghost Story.
- 26:32Ghost Story is one of my favorites, guys. 1981, check it out.
- 26:36Peter Straub. Lauren Slavery, Fred Astaire.
- 26:39Wonderful. Peter Straub's novel. But spoiler alert, if you guys haven't seen
- 26:43Ghost Story, I'm going to give this away.
- 26:45This woman is haunting these people, and they have to figure out how to stop the woman.
- 26:51They figure out, find the bodies, find the body.
- 26:55So, well, that's kind of cliche, actually, in most horror films.
- 26:57Yeah, I was going to say there's a lot of horror films do that.
- 27:00Both the guys do even does it.
- 27:03So they have to go and they find these oil barrels that the three kids of their bodies are in.
- 27:10And Gwen is in complete hypnotic state, so she just jumps in.
- 27:15She's like almost like you're right dream warriors state now she's um she's invincible,
- 27:21and as they're fighting but see if they're doing that
- 27:24they're fighting the grabber and there's some
- 27:27wonderful moments here with the grabber there's a great shot of him coming
- 27:30toward us in this you got this fog bank
- 27:33and the cold of snow and you see this figure coming with
- 27:36through the as he's skating toward us with
- 27:39the mask on yes it's a wonderful shot again i
- 27:42think that's homage to a film called curtains curtains does
- 27:45the exact same thing it's creepy as hell guys check that one
- 27:48out curtains again this film is i think
- 27:51really a nod to the hat to a lot of his influences yeah
- 27:55i mean just that scene but with the grabber you know doing the basically the
- 27:59ice hockey skating thing it does look like so much of this film um looks cracking
- 28:04it looks beautiful beautifully shot it is it is and i do think that it almost
- 28:09looks like a stage and i think that some of this was, but it doesn't matter.
- 28:12It actually makes it more beautiful. Yeah. But...
- 28:16This whole sequence of events is so fun. And because the first three quarters
- 28:21of it, you're just kind of stuck, you glued your seed, good conversations,
- 28:25dream sequences, flashbacks with using the 8mm or using dream,
- 28:29doing a dream state was done in 8mm.
- 28:32And you cut away to high def, then you know what the difference,
- 28:35you know, what reality is, what isn't.
- 28:37So it was a nice way to distinguish what was real and what wasn't.
- 28:42But this whole sequence is all going to be done with you know uh really cool
- 28:48effects and just beautiful dp work and the scene where they get the kids bodies
- 28:55up and then the grabbers now pretty much they took him out of dreamlike state
- 28:59and they can kill him he's he's vulnerable now,
- 29:02he's basically he becomes like the dragon in the r world but you don't see him
- 29:08it's like he's the Invisible Man type thing, but that's how they get them. And...
- 29:13When they just beat the fuck out of him, and then they tear him to shreds pretty
- 29:17good, and they chuck him in the water.
- 29:20There's a shot of him and the blood coming out of his body, and then you got
- 29:24the darkness, but you got the white, you got the glare from the moon coming
- 29:28into the water, and the covered ice.
- 29:31It's just gorgeous of him just- Back to your icy hell with you,
- 29:35asshole. Yeah. Yeah. It is.
- 29:38It's just a beautiful shot. Now, the film does end that the father is told that,
- 29:46because the father's always had guilt of why the mother commits suicide.
- 29:51And so they finally tell him, mother did commit suicide, the grabber hung her
- 29:57because she was on to him.
- 29:58And that explains why Gwen caught on to him in the first movie.
- 30:05So a lot of knots being tied here. You know, we're getting the whole story now, which is nice.
- 30:12And so the father gets emotional. Finn is dealing with, he finally has an outburst,
- 30:20screaming at everybody when he went through. And he finally let it all out.
- 30:24And that's his resolve. And then a phone rings. Now it's the mother.
- 30:29What they should have done here, I think when Gwen picks up the phone,
- 30:35she goes, hi, sweetie. and then all we needed to really see is Gwen have a smile
- 30:41on her face and then you should have cut away.
- 30:43That would have been a perfect little ending.
- 30:45But no, we get a little cheese motto with...
- 30:49Hey, is this your honey? Oh, they're up here in heaven with me.
- 30:52I love you. They're up here in heaven with me. And I get it.
- 30:56Clearly, there's a Catholic background to Derrickson, and I actually respect
- 31:00that 100%. And just that.
- 31:03There's a certain religious element to a lot of Scott Derrickson's films.
- 31:07All the stuff. All the stuff.
- 31:08But personally, for a horror film, the coup to hand it, maybe it's because I'm
- 31:14a sick, twisted freak. I'm going to go with, yes.
- 31:17What I was wanting what would have really worked for me would have been if it
- 31:24had been the mother being all nice but then the final sort of twist it was actually
- 31:29like Freddy Krueger it's actually the grabber fucking wear.
- 31:34Gotcha bitch welcome to prime time bitch that would have been stupid even better
- 31:40that could have actually had it as Freddy Krueger a cameo from Robert Unglund,
- 31:47Rubber England and you know saying something I'm here with your asshole friend the grabber.
- 31:54That would be daft but I would have liked the more sort of horror-esque,
- 31:58I'm obviously joking the horror-esque thing has been done,
- 32:02overplayed, oh you never got me you don't need a final scare anymore this isn't
- 32:07a slasher film, you said that yourself this isn't a Scott Derrickson,
- 32:14who's very good in his craft.
- 32:16He's not going to sell out by doing a stupid jump scare at the very end. He told the story.
- 32:21That's it. And so he gave us a complete conclusion. I just think they should have...
- 32:28I think they should have just cut it once the phone rang. We knew it was the
- 32:32mom. Put her smile on her face. That gives her closure. The end.
- 32:37I wanted it to be the grabber. That's just stupid. Now you're just going back to... Final skirt.
- 32:42And it sets up the next one. Now that's the problem.
- 32:46That's the problem right there. Because we will get a next one? I don't think we will.
- 32:51I actually don't think... Well, the studios will demand it. I believe this is doing well.
- 32:56And you know what? It deserves to do well because it's a very good film.
- 32:59And I would again say that I feel it's... I would have to watch the first one again.
- 33:05But I would say that it is possibly either just as good or even better than the first one overall.
- 33:13But if this does well at the box office, which I think it deserves to and it
- 33:18probably is and will there'll definitely be a third one if they end up doing
- 33:22a third one all new characters,
- 33:25all new characters including the grabber he's gone, you get a new villain you
- 33:30know that's one thing horror films don't get right, you can do sequel sequel
- 33:34sequel, don't keep the same villain they will but?
- 33:37You don't know, Scott Derrickson has control on this one and I don't see him
- 33:41selling out, that's one thing he won't do I can see him bailing but and saying...
- 33:46Yeah, he might have no choice. He might have no choice. But he...
- 33:51He quit against Marvel when Marvel wanted to complete. She said,
- 33:54no, I'm done then. And he walked away and they gave the reins to Sam Raimi.
- 33:58So you just, I don't know. I hope not. I hope that they told the story.
- 34:02They're done. I don't want to see any more of this.
- 34:04There doesn't need to be another one. Well, according to you,
- 34:07there should be because you want to jump scare at the end. No,
- 34:09no, no. If there's a jump scare at the end of this, then there's a sequel coming.
- 34:13I know. Would have left it hanging in the air. You don't. You don't do that.
- 34:17What's with you and loose ends? You love a fucking loose end.
- 34:23Because it has people, the audience, or if it's a book, the readers,
- 34:29sort of looking more. But it's a teaser.
- 34:32You're teasing. You're playing with the audience or the readership or whatever.
- 34:36These films aren't teaser films.
- 34:38Not everything has to be wrapped up on a nice little boat. Yes, it does.
- 34:41These do. No, they don't. They do because you're clueless when it comes to films.
- 34:45You are now. No. You have this hard on.
- 34:49You have this hard on. Oh, no, you don't have to give me a story.
- 34:54You just leave it to my imagination.
- 34:56Totally. Yes, absolutely. And we'll have that conversation with where what's
- 34:59coming up next, you fucker.
- 35:01So let me tell you right now. I'm telling you right now. Ooh. This is a fucking smart.
- 35:06Black Phone was a smart film, and it ended the end.
- 35:11They got into a second one. Fine, we'll do it. They did it again.
- 35:15They struck lightning in a bottle twice. Good on them.
- 35:17They are not going to sell out by going boo it takes away the entire it takes
- 35:25away the dramatic element you had why do you have to have it so you're saying
- 35:30it's a horror film so if it's a horror film it has to have the cliches of a
- 35:34horror film that's what you're saying,
- 35:36but you can play it around with them. No, you can't. I just thought this was
- 35:39a bit too neatly tied up on a bow.
- 35:42I mean, it didn't ruin it. You know, it doesn't ruin it.
- 35:45But I think it would have been more fun.
- 35:48And yes, it would have been a little bit of a cliche to have it not really being
- 35:52the mother, but actually the grabber.
- 35:54But at the same time, I'm sort of contradicting myself in that I don't want
- 35:58there to be another one because I think it is all, you know,
- 36:00it's all done and dusted.
- 36:02But being realistic, if this does well at the box office, there will be another
- 36:06one on that note cool as twat,
- 36:10no won't be see I see what I have to put up with listeners you know what I mean
- 36:15personal abuse it's you know I wish that fucking phone in the ring right now
- 36:20in your fucking head and then you'd be like hey Trevor you want a jump scare,
- 36:27damn I hope the fucking grabber gets you and fucking locks you in a basement
- 36:31so I have to deal with your shite.
- 36:35God i love i love friday mornings yeah the
- 36:39weekend is upon us guys check it out it's a great film i love it when it's very
- 36:43good well very few horror sequels can really pull this off and he he's done
- 36:47it a lot of people are saying this is better than the original i still go for
- 36:50the original because it's more grounded but either way a little oh you know
- 36:54what's funny the girl in this who plays gwen,
- 36:59Madeline something something McGraw McGraw she's got a,
- 37:03almost a twin sister but she's a year and a half younger she's the girl the
- 37:07lead in the Megan films I thought it was her I thought it was too but she looks
- 37:12just almost a twin but she's a year and a half the girl in the Megan films I
- 37:15think she's a year and a half they look very alike yeah very talented family so there you go
- 37:19and also the sister was also in the recent film that we reviewed Life of Chuck,
- 37:25Yeah, that's why I got confused. I thought it was the girl from here. Yeah.
