Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Involution and Evolution of Consciousness in the Material World of Forms
Transcript
- 0:01We observe the material world around us, and as we study that
- 0:05world we see the development of forms of ever greater complexity
- 0:10and power, of action and intelligence.
- 0:13Charles Darwin described the process of the evolution of
- 0:17forms in his book The Origin of Species.
- 0:21The cause and purpose, however, were never satisfactorily
- 0:25answered. This led to the debate between
- 0:28religion and science, with religion essentially holding
- 0:31that beings were created by God in their present forms and that
- 0:36the idea of evolution of forms was mistaken.
- 0:40Science, meanwhile, built a complex model showing how forms
- 0:44actually evolved and used skeletal history and carbon
- 0:49dating as means to document their position.
- 0:53Each side of the debate, however, left out important
- 0:58aspects and thus no conclusion could be reached.
- 1:04Shiro Window, taking up and expanding on the guidance
- 1:07provided in the Vedic and Upanishadic texts, described the
- 1:12evolution of forms as the result of the pressure of higher powers
- 1:15of consciousness to manifest in this world.
- 1:20These higher powers had their own native worlds or domains,
- 1:25vital domains, mental domains, spiritual domains where they
- 1:31acted in their own direct manner.
- 1:33They created the material universe through a process of
- 1:36increasing density of the vibrations they produced until
- 1:41they took on a solid shape and involved these powers into
- 1:45matter later to evolve out systematically while producing
- 1:50new forms capable of holding and expressing their force of
- 1:55consciousness and power of action effectively, thereby
- 1:59marrying the spiritual aspect with the material aspect in an
- 2:05expressive whole. Matter, therefore, is not the
- 2:08starting point, but is actually the result of the action of
- 2:13powers of consciousness acting on the causal plane.
- 2:18As the higher powers begin to develop in the material forms,
- 2:22they initiate a vibratory pattern that attracts the action
- 2:25of the corresponding force of consciousness from its native
- 2:29domain. This process of aspiration
- 2:33brings about the response and the support from these higher
- 2:37powers and thus makes the evolutionary process possible.
- 2:44The world, in Triorbindo's view, is not a random occurrence
- 2:48developed solely from dead matter through some unknown
- 2:51process of chemical interactions.
- 2:54Rather, it is the expression of consciousness creating and
- 2:58manifesting the entire creation for its own purpose, according
- 3:04to its own sense, Sri Aurobindo writes in his epic poem Savitri,
- 3:09a legend and a symbol quote. Our earth is a fragment and a
- 3:15residue. Her power is packed with the
- 3:18stuff of greater worlds and steeped in their colour lusters
- 3:23dimmed by her drowse. An atavism of higher births is
- 3:28hers. Her sleep is stirred by their
- 3:30buried memories, recalling the lost spheres from which they
- 3:35fell. Unsatisfied forces in her bosom
- 3:39move. They are partners of her greater
- 3:42growing fate and her return to immortality.

- 4:05have disclosed its hidden mind, or even in blinkers worked in
- 4:10beast and man, the intelligence that devised the cosmic scheme.
