- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker. Real Talk, Real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: Real results, Frank Walker Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Caralee with Let's Talk
- 0:39Speaker 4: and I have in the building. Uh Hollis Lewis, Hello, Hello,
- 0:43Speaker 4: and the list the miss Lisa can get my name right.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I've been trying to I've been trying to forget.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Forget you is what I've been specause I don't have
- 0:55Speaker 5: my Packers shirt on tonight.
- 0:56Speaker 6: You're up.
- 0:57Speaker 2: That is the reason why I've been trying to forget you.
- 0:59Speaker 2: That's the problem.
- 1:00Speaker 7: You know I wear one next week.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Well you know we don't take it as a Viking
- 1:03Speaker 4: fan anytime, so you don't have to wait it out. Okay,
- 1:07Speaker 4: oh boy, So today, and I'm gonna say, maybe the
- 1:13Speaker 4: quietest person on the show sometimes sometimes sometimes I'm mad.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I was quiet because I missed last week with Dustin Baker.
- 1:20Speaker 4: So I'm a little you little man, but I want
- 1:25Speaker 4: to talk to that was missed. If you haven't listened
- 1:30Speaker 4: to that show, make sure you do that. Well, since
- 1:32Speaker 4: you're back, well we're going to hand it over to you.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Let you handle, all right. So we talked, y'all talk
- 1:38Speaker 4: Vikings and Packers and all that stuff. But I am
- 1:41Speaker 4: a Laker fan. I can say this is the this
- 1:44Speaker 4: is probably the only team that I am a true
- 1:47Speaker 4: fan of besides West Virginia State and Southern University. But
- 1:50Speaker 4: far as professional, I'm a I'm a Laker fan. I'm
- 1:53Speaker 4: never going to change. If if if I couldn't like
- 1:56Speaker 4: if I could not be a Laker fan. I just
- 1:58Speaker 4: I'm not a fan of basketball team Laker.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Okay, okay me either. You got to give me a
- 2:06Speaker 2: little bit of backdrop.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Magic Johnson, that's it. I love Magic Johnson. He's my
- 2:12Speaker 4: favorite all time basketball player. He's the greatest basketball player
- 2:15Speaker 4: if you ask me. But yeah, I'm a huge Magic Johnson.
- 2:20Speaker 4: When when he did his announcement, you know, he he
- 2:23Speaker 4: couldn't play anymore, Like I cried, like you know, I am.
- 2:28Speaker 4: I was like ten eleven, maybe twelve I'm like that.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I think it was like ninety three, it was early nineties.
- 2:34Speaker 7: You hear that he's a baby.
- 2:38Speaker 4: I am a huge I love Magic Johnson. So what
- 2:43Speaker 4: happened is that this past week the Lakers were sold
- 2:47Speaker 4: for the second time in a year. So the Lakers
- 2:50Speaker 4: were originally sold to from the Bus family, or at
- 2:53Speaker 4: least a large percentage from the Bus family, to Mark Walter.
- 2:57Speaker 4: He's he owns the Dodgers and a couple other teams
- 3:00Speaker 4: for ten million dollars. Walter then turns around this week
- 3:04Speaker 4: and sells the majority interest eighty three percent of the
- 3:08Speaker 4: Lakers to Disney CEO bib Auger and Josh Kushner Josh Cushing.
- 3:13Speaker 4: I think is some disin related to the Trump family
- 3:16Speaker 4: or you know, by marriage or whatever. He sells them
- 3:18Speaker 4: for twelve point five million dollars, So that's about a
- 3:20Speaker 4: twenty five percent return in it in a year. So
- 3:25Speaker 4: and Walter Mark Walters, he is currently under federal investigation
- 3:29Speaker 4: for tax frauds, so I think he's not only selling
- 3:31Speaker 4: the Lakers, He's trying to sell the soccer team. But
- 3:35Speaker 4: I think the issue with this is number one, when
- 3:37Speaker 4: you have such an historic franchise, like the Lakers being
- 3:40Speaker 4: kind of just moved around like a used car, although
- 3:44Speaker 4: although we're talking significant money, so we're not talking used
- 3:47Speaker 4: car money, right, And then just the manner in which
- 3:50Speaker 4: this sell happened, right, because again this was kind of quiet. Normally,
- 3:54Speaker 4: if a team is up for sale, it's a kind
- 3:57Speaker 4: of quote unquote pin on the.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Markets and hurt exactly right there may.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Literally, So I guess the question is is that does
- 4:09Speaker 4: the league or should professional franchise leagues, do they have
- 4:14Speaker 4: an obligation to make sure that sales like this aren't
- 4:18Speaker 4: done in this sort of manner or is it a
- 4:21Speaker 4: situation in which, hey, man, you own a team, you
- 4:23Speaker 4: kind of do what you want.
- 4:24Speaker 2: See And and to that point, I think ownership.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Supersedes not that it should, but it supersedes the owner,
- 4:37Speaker 4: like the.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I don't even know how to even describe it, but
- 4:41Speaker 2: you yes, like I don't.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I think if I own it, you can't tell
- 4:47Speaker 4: me what I can and can't do with it. But
- 4:49Speaker 4: but isn't there like an integrity part within kind of
- 4:53Speaker 4: the confines of like the n b A or whatever
- 4:56Speaker 4: professional sports organization that they should have some sort of
- 4:59Speaker 4: you could you you could want that, but again, how
- 5:03Speaker 4: how how are how are you going to convince me
- 5:06Speaker 4: as an owner of a team that that that you're
- 5:08Speaker 4: gonna because let's say, because it has it's not there now,
- 5:11Speaker 4: can we get there? I'm gonna say possibly no, because
- 5:15Speaker 4: I don't want you to be able to dictate what
- 5:18Speaker 4: I'm doing with my team.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Now. Do I think that's right?
- 5:21Speaker 8: No?
- 5:22Speaker 2: But I just don't. I don't think that that's well.
- 5:24Speaker 7: I mean I see your point to a degree.
- 5:27Speaker 5: It is your team and you should be allowed to
- 5:29Speaker 5: to do you know, as you will as far as
- 5:32Speaker 5: sell or you know, keep it or however you choose
- 5:35Speaker 5: to handle things.
- 5:35Speaker 7: But it's got to be a clean sale.
- 5:38Speaker 5: I mean, there's so much, there's so much like you know, uh,
- 5:41Speaker 5: dirt around this sale because you're thinking about this this
- 5:45Speaker 5: guy that we Mark Walter agreed to sell to, that
- 5:49Speaker 5: Josh Kushner, he's in trouble right now, right, Yeah, they're
- 5:56Speaker 5: all in trouble. So you know, I think that why
- 5:58Speaker 5: I meant Walter, you're right, but he's the one that
- 6:01Speaker 5: had the business empire, right, the t WG Global, and
- 6:04Speaker 5: they're under investigation for tax fraud, for tax fraud.
- 6:07Speaker 7: And for for you know, he's trying to seek.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Liquidation because he had all these loans that he had
- 6:13Speaker 5: through insurance companies, like sixteen billion dollars worth of loans,
- 6:17Speaker 5: so he's trying to pay those down. So that's part
- 6:19Speaker 5: of the tax fraud, I believe.
- 6:20Speaker 2: OK.
- 6:20Speaker 7: But you know, I don't think that.
- 6:25Speaker 5: You have some freedom to do what you want with
- 6:28Speaker 5: your team once you buy into an NBA franchise, But
- 6:31Speaker 5: it has to be legitimate and you know, above scrutiny.
- 6:37Speaker 2: But shouldn't we be looking at them, shouldn't we shouldn't
- 6:39Speaker 2: we catch that on the front end?
- 6:41Speaker 4: I mean, I mean maybe, But I think the other
- 6:44Speaker 4: issue far as when we talk about the legitimated legitimacy
- 6:49Speaker 4: of the sale, and it's particularly like what's going on
- 6:51Speaker 4: because you're kind of in trouble and you don't want
- 6:53Speaker 4: to have any sort of you know, stain on the
- 6:56Speaker 4: league name. If I'm the New York Knicks, if I'm
- 6:59Speaker 4: the Miami if I'm Chicago Bulls, I'm like, what are
- 7:02Speaker 4: you doing? We sold again? The Lakers are the Yankees.
- 7:07Speaker 4: The Lakers are the Cowboys. So if you sold them
- 7:10Speaker 4: for twelve point five, and I'm like, I mean not
- 7:12Speaker 4: to say they are. But if I'm the New York Knickson,
- 7:14Speaker 4: I'm like, well it's time for me to sell. Are
- 7:16Speaker 4: you going to get as much as the Lakers? Probably
- 7:18Speaker 4: not right. If you're Miami Heat, you definitely ain't. You're Chicago,
- 7:22Speaker 4: if you're Milwaukee. So if I'm an other team, if
- 7:24Speaker 4: I'm another team owner, again, I may sympathize what's going on,
- 7:27Speaker 4: But at the same time, I'm looking like, dang, at
- 7:29Speaker 4: least put it on the market, because I'm thinking, at
- 7:32Speaker 4: the very least I'm top fifteen billion, maybe even up
- 7:35Speaker 4: to twenty bgion it's the Lakers, yes too, Okay, So
- 7:39Speaker 4: the really the issue to me that you're saying is
- 7:44Speaker 4: actually the cost and the sale cost of it. There's
- 7:48Speaker 4: no way you can you can buy a franchise team
- 7:54Speaker 4: and not one of the best in the NBA.
- 7:57Speaker 2: In sports, in sports, in sport. Okay, I even give
- 8:00Speaker 2: you that.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Yeah, it's in sports, No way you can you can
- 8:04Speaker 4: come out of that with that little bit of money.
- 8:07Speaker 2: I mean, but it's a lot of money.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It's a lot of But what I'm saying is like,
- 8:10Speaker 4: if you put it on the market, we don't know.
- 8:12Speaker 4: I mean, maybe maybe it maybe it is twelve point five.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Maybe that's what it is. We don't know, but I'm
- 8:16Speaker 4: saying we don't know because.
- 8:17Speaker 2: It's not in the market.
- 8:18Speaker 4: I would i would agree with you that it's probably
- 8:21Speaker 4: worth closer to fifteen or maybe a little bit more
- 8:24Speaker 4: so if I'm an if I'm another team, I'm looking
- 8:26Speaker 4: at like, man, you just can't arbitrarily sell these things.
- 8:29Speaker 4: And again, were there any vetting to your point? You
- 8:33Speaker 4: talk about catching on the front end? Are we vetting
- 8:35Speaker 4: the new owners? What's the process for that?
- 8:37Speaker 2: Right?
- 8:38Speaker 6: You know?
- 8:38Speaker 2: Are we opening ourselves up to bid? Is it?
- 8:41Speaker 4: Is it a quote unquote fair process? Because the league
- 8:44Speaker 4: can reject to say hey, you can't own a franchise.
- 8:48Speaker 4: They've done that previously, they rejected owners.
- 8:51Speaker 7: They're not going to reject that much money, though, do
- 8:53Speaker 7: you think even though.
- 8:56Speaker 5: And who else would buy? I mean, I'm sure there
- 8:58Speaker 5: would be somebody, but not for that much.
- 9:00Speaker 4: We see in Jenny Buss her family just sold their
- 9:03Speaker 4: seventeen point eight steak after the original sale. That yeah,
- 9:06Speaker 4: so they sold. Not not only did Walter show his shares,
- 9:09Speaker 4: but the Bus family saw this, which is a sad thing.
- 9:11Speaker 5: It's just well, she was supposed to be like that
- 9:14Speaker 5: she was going to stay the Lakers governor until all this,
- 9:17Speaker 5: like you know, change and transition you know, kind of
- 9:21Speaker 5: happened and now she's gone.
- 9:22Speaker 7: So you know, that's another thing.
- 9:24Speaker 5: This team is probably you know, their heads are the
- 9:28Speaker 5: people on the team, the organization, the players, Their heads
- 9:31Speaker 5: are spinning. You're going from one owner to another, the changes,
- 9:34Speaker 5: the expectations. Do you think that's why Lebron you know,
- 9:38Speaker 5: kind of thought about I didn't even think that.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Wind of that.
- 9:44Speaker 5: I wow, I just thought of I just made that connection.
- 9:48Speaker 5: And I'm like, you know, he went to the seventy
- 9:50Speaker 5: six ers and he just went up, you know, not
- 9:52Speaker 5: long ago.
- 9:53Speaker 7: Did he know?
- 9:53Speaker 5: Did he see this coming? Did somebody you know tell
- 9:56Speaker 5: him that this was coming down the pike? And he
- 9:57Speaker 5: was like, hey, I'm out of here.
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's actually a great point that even think about. So
- 10:01Speaker 2: that could be.
- 10:02Speaker 4: And it can and and and it couldn't easily look
- 10:05Speaker 4: as though he might have known, but he and he
- 10:08Speaker 4: might not have. But yeah, I mean that's a that's
- 10:13Speaker 4: a that is a good good point because I mean,
- 10:17Speaker 4: why would he why would he have left? Well, I
- 10:19Speaker 4: think his time was up, But yeah, I think.
- 10:22Speaker 5: That but it might but if any other any other franchise,
- 10:28Speaker 5: there's not to me.
- 10:29Speaker 4: I don't think he has an opportunity to go to
- 10:32Speaker 4: a franchise that is on the brink of winning a
- 10:35Speaker 4: championship because they don't need him. I think he is
- 10:38Speaker 4: in this situation with all the pieces that they got
- 10:40Speaker 4: within is now.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I think he is now, I really do.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I mean, because they got emb they got your boy,
- 10:47Speaker 4: they got Jaylen Brown, they got Lebron, they got some
- 10:51Speaker 4: other like young pieces there.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Okay, let me ask you, let me let me ask
- 10:54Speaker 2: you this question.
- 10:55Speaker 7: I'm happy in l A. I mean, I think that's
- 10:58Speaker 7: his business.
- 10:59Speaker 5: You're right, And he had a son there with him.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I mean, he was kind of living a dream life.
- 11:04Speaker 5: The Lakers, like you said, they're the story team of
- 11:06Speaker 5: the NBA. It just kind of Now that.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Is a good Maybe he knew something, right, that's a
- 11:12Speaker 2: good point.
- 11:12Speaker 7: I mean, you know this didn't happen.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Just this has been in the works for a minute,
- 11:16Speaker 5: for this much money and all the trans you know,
- 11:18Speaker 5: transactions and the paperwork that have to take place with
- 11:21Speaker 5: the legal stuff. Surely somewhere along the road he found
- 11:25Speaker 5: out about it.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Well, maybe he just knew that guy was in trouble.
- 11:28Speaker 7: Maybe he not too that too.
- 11:30Speaker 4: Oh man, Okay, have we ever seen this happen like
- 11:39Speaker 4: this before? You can anybody remember this fast? Like a
- 11:44Speaker 4: sale like that just happened again. We're not talking no disrespect.
- 11:48Speaker 4: We're not talking about the Brewers. No, you know what
- 11:50Speaker 4: I'm saying. You're talking about the Lakers. Yes, it's it's
- 11:55Speaker 4: in American sports. It is the Lakers, it is the Yankees,
- 12:01Speaker 4: and it's the Cowboys when you all play.
- 12:07Speaker 2: There. Yeah, that's why Mike went out.
- 12:12Speaker 7: I think Matt Murphy was they cut my mic out.
- 12:16Speaker 2: No, but those are the premier franchises.
- 12:18Speaker 4: But hey, like them, love I'm no I am, I
- 12:21Speaker 4: am no cowboy friend, but like them, love them, I
- 12:24Speaker 4: hate him. Those are the premier franchises in American sports.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And when you sell those franchises, you don't do so
- 12:32Speaker 4: in a week under.
- 12:33Speaker 2: You don't do that. I don't know.
- 12:35Speaker 4: I'm gonna say even do you even do you even sell?
- 12:38Speaker 4: Do you even sell those great point coach.
- 12:41Speaker 7: Even when they lose, they make money.
- 12:43Speaker 5: We we know the merch sales, you know, just people
- 12:47Speaker 5: buy tickets, whether they're losing better.
- 12:50Speaker 4: Better year, And those are franchise that have been handed
- 12:54Speaker 4: down to second and third generator.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yes, right, you know what I'm saying.
- 12:57Speaker 4: When you look at the Yankees and stein brannder friend,
- 12:59Speaker 4: I'm not sure if they still own him. I believe
- 13:01Speaker 4: they did at least for a while. You know, the
- 13:03Speaker 4: bus you're passing him down at least for one or
- 13:06Speaker 4: two generations. Right, So it's just, man, it's just a little,
- 13:10Speaker 4: a little fishy.
- 13:11Speaker 7: A lot fishy.
- 13:12Speaker 5: I'll know, a lot, I'll go even further, a lot fishy.
- 13:15Speaker 4: I'm I just don't for me anything anything that has
- 13:24Speaker 4: to do. I would say, I don't know if it
- 13:28Speaker 4: necessarily I can, I can put him in this, but
- 13:30Speaker 4: it went it's around Lebron.
- 13:33Speaker 8: Johns Now, he's not responsible, No, he is everything that saying.
- 13:44Speaker 5: But this looks pretty legit that that we're questioning. Is
- 13:48Speaker 5: that why he jumped ship in LA Now that this
- 13:51Speaker 5: came out not long after he decided to go to
- 13:53Speaker 5: the seventy six ers.
- 13:54Speaker 7: I mean, I'm just I'm just.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Making my point, helping me make my I'm not.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Saying he did it like like he wanted to do.
- 14:00Speaker 5: I mean, you know, maybe he saw what was coming
- 14:02Speaker 5: on and the guy you want to get his hands dirty.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Okay, you said you said he saw the writing on
- 14:10Speaker 2: the wall, or did somebody write it on the wall?
- 14:13Speaker 7: Somebody did he read the writing?
- 14:16Speaker 4: See that's my that's my place seeing doesn't want to
- 14:19Speaker 4: give me no do You could very well be we
- 14:23Speaker 4: both could. But I'm going to make the case it's
- 14:27Speaker 4: not a coincidence to me that he's trying to jump ship.
- 14:31Speaker 4: I jumping ship because he he he's going to know.
- 14:36Speaker 2: To me, I feel like he's he's a player. He's
- 14:39Speaker 2: in the note.
- 14:40Speaker 4: I mean, and and again it's legitimate because of all
- 14:43Speaker 4: his businesses in l A. He does this stuff, with
- 14:46Speaker 4: all the things he's trying to do.
- 14:47Speaker 7: He's your head a little bit when he goes to Philly.
- 14:51Speaker 4: So like, I'm no conspiracy theorist, but you know, again,
- 15:00Speaker 4: you heard it here first. I don't think I've heard
- 15:01Speaker 4: that anywhere else. I don't think I've heard that theory.
- 15:04Speaker 4: So it's legit. But we move on to football, and
- 15:08Speaker 4: we have quarterback of the Commanders, the Washington DC Commanders,
- 15:13Speaker 4: Jaden Danils. He sent a cease and desist order to
- 15:18Speaker 4: l s U to stop using his name, image, and likeness,
- 15:22Speaker 4: and the basis of it was because they allowed another
- 15:27Speaker 4: player to wear his number five. He was a Heisman
- 15:30Speaker 4: winner at LSU. I don't think they didn't win a
- 15:33Speaker 4: national championship winning, but he was a Heisman winner, high
- 15:35Speaker 4: draft pick, and he and he backdated. So he was
- 15:38Speaker 4: just like, look, don't use my image no more. If
- 15:40Speaker 4: y'all gonna let him use where my number, we're done.
- 15:44Speaker 4: As far as that relationship, I think he even tried to, like,
- 15:46Speaker 4: at least the speculation that he tried to like take
- 15:48Speaker 4: back the Heisman that's house there and everything like that.
- 15:52Speaker 2: What do you what do you think about that?
- 15:54Speaker 4: All Right, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna hit this
- 15:56Speaker 4: with a question. All right, So let's just say you
- 16:01Speaker 4: you you go to college. Most colleges are rarely retire jerseys.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Some some league teams don't.
- 16:11Speaker 2: Yes, don't. I didn't know that.
- 16:14Speaker 4: Yeah, and and and a lot of times the league,
- 16:16Speaker 4: they may retire your jersey, but somebody can still wear it, right,
- 16:22Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, Because they because there's only
- 16:24Speaker 4: so many numbers, it's not official.
- 16:26Speaker 7: They just kind of take it off the market. Is
- 16:28Speaker 7: that what you're saying?
- 16:28Speaker 4: You know, they're just like, hang it up. The like
- 16:31Speaker 4: honor the jersey. They won't retire the number. They might
- 16:36Speaker 4: retire in particular jersey for you.
- 16:39Speaker 7: Okay, but not the number.
- 16:40Speaker 4: But not the number, yeah, because what what because you
- 16:43Speaker 4: can you can come up short of numbers.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Now, with with that being said, I would think.
- 16:53Speaker 4: I'm okay if you know you're not gonna retire my jersey,
- 16:58Speaker 4: somebody's gonna wear I'm okay with somebody wearing it. What
- 17:03Speaker 4: I the all that would matter to me is what
- 17:05Speaker 4: what will you do with my jersey to to keep
- 17:08Speaker 4: me in the mindset of the fan base and the
- 17:12Speaker 4: former players that are or the future players that will come.
- 17:15Speaker 4: I'm not really why do I care if they take
- 17:19Speaker 4: the number off the market? Well, I think I think
- 17:22Speaker 4: for sure, you're a Heisman winner, his jersey is going
- 17:25Speaker 4: to be like in their Ring of honor or whatever.
- 17:27Speaker 4: They's going to be honest, he's going to and all
- 17:30Speaker 4: that stuff. But I think it brings up two interesting questions,
- 17:33Speaker 4: Like I think number one is the business savvy of
- 17:37Speaker 4: the athlete to say okay again. And he didn't go
- 17:42Speaker 4: He went to I think one or two years there.
- 17:44Speaker 4: He started out for Arizona State. Then he transferred to
- 17:46Speaker 4: l s U. I'll touch on that in a second,
- 17:49Speaker 4: but I think that it brings up an interesting point
- 17:51Speaker 4: of now the athlete saying, look, I don't want if
- 17:54Speaker 4: you're not gonna, you know, essentially do what I say
- 17:58Speaker 4: as far as the college that I went to, I
- 18:00Speaker 4: don't want you using my name, image and likeness anymore.
- 18:03Speaker 4: So I don't want you to profit or use me
- 18:05Speaker 4: in promotional tools or anything like that. What do you
- 18:09Speaker 4: think about that part that that that the athlete now
- 18:11Speaker 4: has that that that I don't think that you I
- 18:14Speaker 4: don't think that you can I don't think that I
- 18:17Speaker 4: could have that at Marshall when I played there. Marshall
- 18:20Speaker 4: has the right to play any clips of my inn
- 18:25Speaker 4: commercial if they're trying to sell Marshall. But okay, let
- 18:29Speaker 4: me but if they did something that you disagreed with.
- 18:33Speaker 5: That, let me let me throw something in there before
- 18:35Speaker 5: you got to go any further with this, because I
- 18:37Speaker 5: think part of the problem is what I read. Jaden
- 18:41Speaker 5: Daniels and his family feel disrespected because, in their opinion,
- 18:45Speaker 5: they're not receiving the same treatment as Joe Burrow. Yeah, okay,
- 18:49Speaker 5: because his number nine jersey has not been given to
- 18:52Speaker 5: any other player since he left for the NFL in
- 18:55Speaker 5: twenty twenty, So that's their argument. Also, I heard or
- 18:58Speaker 5: I read that this uh it's it's a defensive back
- 19:02Speaker 5: wearing his number DJ picktt that yeah, yeah, that was
- 19:06Speaker 5: part that was part of his recruiting deal, that he
- 19:10Speaker 5: wanted to wear that number and they granted that. So
- 19:12Speaker 5: that's kind of a sticky situation because I guess the
- 19:15Speaker 5: school doesn't want to, you know, go back on what
- 19:17Speaker 5: they promised this four star player to come to l SU.
- 19:21Speaker 4: But I would say with Joe Burrow, is that again
- 19:24Speaker 4: I understand that from a competitive nature, like you want
- 19:27Speaker 4: the same treatment, But I would also say, Joe Burrow
- 19:30Speaker 4: won a championship and that was one of the greatest
- 19:33Speaker 4: college football teams of all time that he was on,
- 19:36Speaker 4: and he won the Heisman. Well, so it's a it's point,
- 19:39Speaker 4: it's sort of a different I am I saying, it's
- 19:42Speaker 4: like it's that far different, But that championship at LSU means.
- 19:46Speaker 2: A lot more than just that Heisman.
- 19:48Speaker 4: Yeah to them, yes, I I.
- 19:53Speaker 2: When did we get to the place, When did we
- 19:55Speaker 2: get to the where a player.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Is arguing about his jersey going to somebody that's that's next.
- 20:06Speaker 4: I never even thought. And again I'm not in that.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I'm not at that level. Well, no, you are at
- 20:12Speaker 4: that level for Marshall. He was like one of the
- 20:14Speaker 4: first draft picks. So you are at that level for Marshall.
- 20:17Speaker 6: You are.
- 20:17Speaker 4: If somebody's gonna wear number one at Marshall, I'm like, hey,
- 20:22Speaker 4: what's his name?
- 20:23Speaker 2: I want to know who he is. You know, I'm not,
- 20:25Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 20:27Speaker 4: I'm not worried about anything about the number when it
- 20:33Speaker 4: comes to me. But but okay, let's let's just let's
- 20:37Speaker 4: say is your numbers retired at Marshall, or your jersey's retired,
- 20:41Speaker 4: or you Ring of Honor or something?
- 20:42Speaker 2: Yeah I got yeah, I'm Hall of Fame.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Yeah okay, but let's I mean, would you feel a
- 20:47Speaker 4: way if if if you weren't getting the same accolades
- 20:50Speaker 4: for somebody who achieved the same thing as you, Like,
- 20:53Speaker 4: so if you had another like the guy the next
- 20:55Speaker 4: dude who gets drafted or or you know what I'm saying,
- 20:58Speaker 4: because I think you were the first after the crew
- 21:00Speaker 4: as right, Yes, so you were the first after the crash,
- 21:02Speaker 4: and let's say the second guy who got drafted and
- 21:04Speaker 4: he's getting all accolades, but you're not quite getting those accolades.
- 21:07Speaker 4: Would you feel different at that point? No, because I
- 21:11Speaker 4: think it's different. It's not just about the jersey. It's
- 21:13Speaker 4: about that he doesn't want them to use his image.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
- 21:20Speaker 7: Here's the thing.
- 21:25Speaker 4: If the player is good, and I'm gonna make the
- 21:28Speaker 4: assumption that he is really good because they're given him
- 21:31Speaker 4: that number, you ain't got to worry about that.
- 21:34Speaker 2: You don't have to.
- 21:35Speaker 7: You don't take your money elsewhere. What you're saying he
- 21:38Speaker 7: doesn't like Okay, at the next level.
- 21:40Speaker 4: If I'm thinking they're gonna give somebody a number one
- 21:43Speaker 4: and he's gonna sit on the bench, Okay, I might
- 21:46Speaker 4: argue with that.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Okay, you know what I'm saying.
- 21:49Speaker 4: But when you're talking, when you're talking about that dude's
- 21:52Speaker 4: wearing number one and he's playing, I don't care. If
- 21:54Speaker 4: he's playing guard and he's a good player, he's on
- 21:57Speaker 4: the field. Why number been worried about that number eleven
- 22:02Speaker 4: at Penn State? We know like all the dog linebackers
- 22:04Speaker 4: getting number eleven in Penn State.
- 22:06Speaker 6: Isn't this the reason we have n I l though?
- 22:09Speaker 6: Isn't this the reason.
- 22:10Speaker 9: Why the schools are paying these players so that they
- 22:13Speaker 9: can use that image, and like this, they have paid
- 22:16Speaker 9: him to be a player, and like Carl's stay, they
- 22:19Speaker 9: didn't have that, so he would have I would think
- 22:22Speaker 9: a much better argument there than say, someone who has
- 22:24Speaker 9: been compensated through the NIL program.
- 22:28Speaker 6: They paid you to play.
- 22:29Speaker 8: There that.
- 22:32Speaker 6: The school owns the rights.
- 22:33Speaker 2: That you're saying that, okay, okay, okay.
- 22:36Speaker 6: They paid him, so they own the rights to do
- 22:39Speaker 6: whatever they want with.
- 22:40Speaker 4: His that's that that to me, that kills it.
- 22:47Speaker 2: That kills I.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Mean, it does, but I'm still saying so, I mean,
- 22:50Speaker 4: like do so so, Matt, you're saying that jayde and
- 22:54Speaker 4: Daniel now does not have a right, whether legally, ethically
- 22:58Speaker 4: or whatever, to dictate what they do with his image
- 23:01Speaker 4: because he was compensated at that time.
- 23:04Speaker 9: Essentially he became an employee of the university.
- 23:07Speaker 7: Yes, you know, this may come up later on when.
- 23:10Speaker 4: We're making some good points now, and yeah, there's.
- 23:19Speaker 2: I mean, that's I mean, that's that can't.
- 23:24Speaker 9: Because I mean that was really kind of one of
- 23:25Speaker 9: the arguments when they came up with the ni L
- 23:27Speaker 9: issue to begin with, because there was video games, there's
- 23:30Speaker 9: obviously advertising all of the traditional stuff that's been going on,
- 23:33Speaker 9: and that was the argument by the players. Hey, you
- 23:36Speaker 9: were using all of our stuff, our image, are likeness
- 23:39Speaker 9: to make money for the university and we're getting nothing
- 23:42Speaker 9: out of it. Now the players are getting something.
- 23:44Speaker 6: Out of it. Do they have the right to make
- 23:47Speaker 6: that claim?
- 23:48Speaker 2: That's a I mean, that's that's not on. I mean that.
- 23:51Speaker 5: Sounds like something that will come up in court eventually
- 23:55Speaker 5: with them, but with you know another player that that
- 23:58Speaker 5: kind of has the same issues. Well, I'll tell you
- 24:00Speaker 5: one thing to kind of like, you know, kind of
- 24:02Speaker 5: the Internet is always undefeated when it comes to stuff
- 24:05Speaker 5: like this, right, you know we know that.
- 24:06Speaker 7: So the jokes have been flying.
- 24:08Speaker 5: So I guess just recently the Mets beat the Nationals
- 24:12Speaker 5: in baseball four to one, and they said they stopped
- 24:15Speaker 5: at four out of respect for Jade and Daniels. Okay,
- 24:18Speaker 5: they've got sub Hub who said they no longer will
- 24:21Speaker 5: offer tickets in groups of five, only four or six
- 24:24Speaker 5: plus out of respect for jabb Now, how funny is that?
- 24:30Speaker 4: When when when are you as the person okay, as Daniels, like,
- 24:34Speaker 4: when are you gonna look at this and say, Okay,
- 24:39Speaker 4: maybe I'm wrong here? But okay, let me let me
- 24:41Speaker 4: ask you a question. How does this play? You know,
- 24:44Speaker 4: you're you in in the NFL locker room, your quarterback
- 24:47Speaker 4: is doing this.
- 24:49Speaker 2: How does this play in the locker room? Are you like,
- 24:51Speaker 2: do what the.
- 24:53Speaker 6: Oh?
- 24:53Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's gonna be guys. There's gonna be guys
- 24:56Speaker 4: and playing guys who are players who have had some
- 25:00Speaker 4: yours in right, they're gonna they're gonna dog.
- 25:02Speaker 2: You, okay, but they're joking. They're gonna joke with you. Bray.
- 25:07Speaker 4: I didn't I didn't question. I walked in and there
- 25:11Speaker 4: was a thirty nine in my locker.
- 25:13Speaker 6: I ain't had.
- 25:13Speaker 4: No I ain't question that, I ain't question none of that.
- 25:17Speaker 4: I was like, oh, that ain't a very good number.
- 25:19Speaker 4: But you know what I did. I put it on
- 25:21Speaker 4: and you made it. You made it a type number.
- 25:23Speaker 4: You made it so and for me, I'm saying, I
- 25:26Speaker 4: don't care what number you get, dude.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Making work and and and and and I couldn't go
- 25:33Speaker 2: over and try to get your jersey. You was already there.
- 25:35Speaker 4: I can't get least it's it's already there, you're already playing.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I can't come in and start talking about well, hey,
- 25:42Speaker 4: I want Hollis as Jersey Hollie no better yet, Hollis
- 25:45Speaker 4: has my jersey number one.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Got that.
- 25:48Speaker 6: Here's the thing about the NFL.
- 25:50Speaker 9: They cover their own ass because what's the very last
- 25:52Speaker 9: thing that plays on an NFL broadcast, the very last thing.
- 25:57Speaker 7: The copyright or production of.
- 25:58Speaker 9: This, reproduction, redistributions, and blah blah blah, the express riding
- 26:02Speaker 9: consent of the NFL. They've got themselves covered there right right.
- 26:05Speaker 9: The question is does the NC DOUBLEA have the same thing.
- 26:08Speaker 9: I don't know, but I bet.
- 26:11Speaker 4: I don't even know if this has ever been a thing.
- 26:13Speaker 4: It's never I got, I don't remember. I mean, I'm
- 26:16Speaker 4: sure I don't even think.
- 26:17Speaker 2: They probably even thought about somebody.
- 26:20Speaker 7: Straight for all of that, like that they paid him
- 26:24Speaker 7: for the name.
- 26:26Speaker 6: You know.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Well, I think it was a situation in which I
- 26:29Speaker 4: want to say it was a Notre Dame player that
- 26:32Speaker 4: and this was before pre n I l he actually
- 26:35Speaker 4: sent something, did something so like he didn't want to
- 26:37Speaker 4: be on commercials and features. He was like on one
- 26:39Speaker 4: of those little game day commercials or something to that fact.
- 26:42Speaker 4: So I think it has been done. But again I
- 26:44Speaker 4: think he was in the air pre print. I want
- 26:47Speaker 4: to say it was a Notre Dame guy, but to
- 26:50Speaker 4: this degree, and I think, and I have to agree
- 26:53Speaker 4: with Matt. I mean, you was paid, so I think
- 26:55Speaker 4: it's going to be difficult for them for you to say, like, well,
- 26:58Speaker 4: we just can't particularly a Heisman troll.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I know, right well, I think I think he's kind
- 27:02Speaker 5: of realized the error of his ways. I mean, recently
- 27:04Speaker 5: he's he's come out and made a statement that he's
- 27:06Speaker 5: locked in on training camp and he has gratitude toward
- 27:11Speaker 5: l s U, but there are issues they need to
- 27:13Speaker 5: work out. So he's kind of backing down a little
- 27:15Speaker 5: bit trying because he realized.
- 27:17Speaker 7: That yeah, yeah, he's good, he knows what's I mean?
- 27:21Speaker 4: I think about think about some of the number, just
- 27:24Speaker 4: the number of players that had left college gone to
- 27:30Speaker 4: the pros and somebody just threw them a number, and
- 27:34Speaker 4: and and and and they put that jersey on and
- 27:37Speaker 4: they played. And here now we've got a guy who is, yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 4: who is worried about it his jersey number.
- 27:46Speaker 7: I know.
- 27:47Speaker 5: I mean it was kind of like I kind of
- 27:49Speaker 5: it raised my eyebrows, that's for sure. I was kind
- 27:51Speaker 5: of like, I guarantee you, Matt makes a good point, Matt.
- 27:55Speaker 7: I mean, I think eventually the point there's gonna be
- 27:58Speaker 7: some litigation that comes along.
- 27:59Speaker 4: With it, and maybe that and that might be something
- 28:02Speaker 4: that's negotiated within contracts on the front end to say,
- 28:06Speaker 4: to negotiate going forward.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Yeah, the name of your li likens moving forward.
- 28:11Speaker 4: I mean, and if it got down to Jersey, that'd
- 28:13Speaker 4: be so petty, but you know, yeah, because because yeah.
- 28:17Speaker 7: Does anything shock you anymore?
- 28:19Speaker 5: Pettiness, the level of pettiness we've got going on in college,
- 28:23Speaker 5: and that's just crazy.
- 28:24Speaker 4: What happened showing up at camp and days and just
- 28:28Speaker 4: business and just go and play business. All right, Speaking
- 28:33Speaker 4: of that, speaking of showing up the camp and play
- 28:35Speaker 4: we are in the midst of the NFL preseason, which
- 28:38Speaker 4: came really really really.
- 28:39Speaker 7: Fast, my goodness, our eyes.
- 28:41Speaker 4: So we wanted to ask you, coach, like what what
- 28:45Speaker 4: like if you can think back to when you were
- 28:48Speaker 4: a rookie, verse when you were an established veteran, like,
- 28:53Speaker 4: what was your mindset about preseason football games? So starting
- 28:58Speaker 4: off when you was a rookie, what was your mindset
- 29:00Speaker 4: going into like your first preseason football game? Am I
- 29:04Speaker 4: gonna play? I just wanted I wanted to get yeah,
- 29:09Speaker 4: I mean, how are the nerves because I mean I think,
- 29:14Speaker 4: I think, I think over the nerves came wanting to play.
- 29:20Speaker 6: I did.
- 29:21Speaker 2: I didn't. I couldn't spend any time. I wasn't.
- 29:24Speaker 4: I don't want to say I wasn't nervous, but I
- 29:26Speaker 4: was more so wanting to play because I figured the
- 29:31Speaker 4: only way I'm gonna make the team is if I
- 29:33Speaker 4: play and I can show it.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So now.
- 29:37Speaker 4: Getting an opportunity, when you first get the first opportunity
- 29:41Speaker 4: to play, there's some nervous nervousness there, but if you're asking, like,
- 29:47Speaker 4: you know, first opportunity. I'm in camp and I want
- 29:51Speaker 4: to get out there with the guys that are that
- 29:55Speaker 4: are the name players.
- 29:57Speaker 6: You know.
- 29:58Speaker 4: You know you got Tommy Kramer out there, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 4: and I'm like, hey, let me I want to go.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Let me in so I can see if I can
- 30:04Speaker 4: intercept the ball from him, you know, I.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Mean you it's just it to me.
- 30:08Speaker 4: It was all about trying to get on simply get
- 30:11Speaker 4: on the field, because you couldn't.
- 30:13Speaker 2: You know, you couldn't.
- 30:14Speaker 4: I wasn't going to be able to stand there and
- 30:16Speaker 4: just say, okay, he looks like a player. I wanted
- 30:19Speaker 4: to show that I was a player and I and
- 30:23Speaker 4: I wasn't really sure if that was gonna be what
- 30:25Speaker 4: showed up. But in my head, I'm thinking, I just
- 30:28Speaker 4: want to get out on the field. I just I
- 30:30Speaker 4: want to I want to get out and field. And
- 30:31Speaker 4: I think most players, whether a walk on or a
- 30:38Speaker 4: free agent, a first round pick, last round pick, I
- 30:42Speaker 4: think when you get there and you're walking into the locker,
- 30:47Speaker 4: and you and you know, you're walking into a it's
- 30:50Speaker 4: a college surroundings, and you you got your number. You
- 30:55Speaker 4: get to your locker and you put that gear on,
- 30:58Speaker 4: and you're walking out for the first practice, the first
- 31:01Speaker 4: actual physical practice. You're thinking about, Man, I'm gonna hit
- 31:05Speaker 4: everything I can possibly get. I'm gonna you know, I'm
- 31:08Speaker 4: gonna do anything I can do to get a coaching Yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 4: a standout so that I have an opportunity to try
- 31:16Speaker 4: to get to play. And you and you get that
- 31:17Speaker 4: twice back in the day. You got it twice a day,
- 31:20Speaker 4: you know, for three three and a half weeks. So
- 31:23Speaker 4: is the is the game the actual first preseason game?
- 31:26Speaker 4: Are you entering with that same mindset? Yes, you want
- 31:30Speaker 4: to play and and and I don't think I played
- 31:34Speaker 4: in the first preseason.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Uh game and special teams nothing, no, nothing.
- 31:41Speaker 4: I think I think maybe the second the second game
- 31:45Speaker 4: I got in.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I got in on defense.
- 31:52Speaker 4: For maybe a quarter, and then by the last preseason game,
- 31:56Speaker 4: I think I got like like maybe the whole last quarter.
- 32:01Speaker 4: I played the all or maybe the half, maybe a half,
- 32:06Speaker 4: and you know, made some plays. But but what it does,
- 32:10Speaker 4: what the preseason does for you is in your cockiness
- 32:14Speaker 4: and belief that you can play.
- 32:16Speaker 2: It'll show you if you can.
- 32:19Speaker 4: You get the opportunity to be able to say, okay,
- 32:22Speaker 4: I can, I can fit here.
- 32:24Speaker 5: So what about the established players though, like, like, okay,
- 32:28Speaker 5: So I'm going to bring this up real quick because
- 32:29Speaker 5: I want to hear what you guys have to think
- 32:30Speaker 5: about I have to say about it. Is Tom Brady,
- 32:33Speaker 5: one of my favorite former quarterbacks insert eye roll here.
- 32:38Speaker 5: He had a message for NFL players who would rather
- 32:41Speaker 5: spend the preseason safely watching from the sideline. He said,
- 32:45Speaker 5: get in the game. What happened was a fan shared
- 32:48Speaker 5: one of his old clips of him playing in a
- 32:51Speaker 5: twenty ten Patriots preseason game, and he reposted it to
- 32:55Speaker 5: his Instagram. Okay, and he said this was you know
- 32:59Speaker 5: and I quote preseason, regular season. I never wanted to
- 33:03Speaker 5: be taken off the field. Practice makes perfect. Too many
- 33:06Speaker 5: people looking for easy ways out these days. Now, that's
- 33:09Speaker 5: what he said. What do you guys think about Tom's wizdy?
- 33:13Speaker 4: I think he's I think he's I think he's one
- 33:15Speaker 4: hundred percent right, because what if he get hurt?
- 33:19Speaker 2: I had.
- 33:20Speaker 4: I got in because hey, I got in because the
- 33:22Speaker 4: guy was saying he was hurt. He thought he was hurt.
- 33:27Speaker 4: I got a chance to get in. I in all
- 33:30Speaker 4: the tents of purposes, I outplayed him.
- 33:33Speaker 6: So now.
- 33:35Speaker 2: His his job now is my job?
- 33:39Speaker 7: The time you were a starter, what I'm saying, yeah.
- 33:42Speaker 2: Once you were established started, what was the thought process
- 33:44Speaker 2: of playing.
- 33:45Speaker 4: I'm not going to ever give you a chance to
- 33:46Speaker 4: get in the game, okay.
- 33:49Speaker 5: And management was okay with that, because see, I look
- 33:52Speaker 5: at it as I doesn't want them in there to
- 33:54Speaker 5: get hurt.
- 33:55Speaker 4: They may bring you out, they may if they bring
- 33:58Speaker 4: you out, they might bring you out the first quarter.
- 34:00Speaker 4: That might bring you out at half and then put
- 34:02Speaker 4: somebody else in. But for me, you the title was preseason.
- 34:10Speaker 4: I wasn't thinking in my mind I was good enough
- 34:12Speaker 4: that it could I could just play it because it.
- 34:14Speaker 2: Was pre season.
- 34:15Speaker 4: I'm playing a game. Oh so you're you're locked in.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I'm locked in. I can't do that in practice, but
- 34:22Speaker 4: this is a game. I don't know nobody over there.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I don't have so I don't have to take it
- 34:28Speaker 4: easy on nobody. You come across here, I'm hitting you.
- 34:31Speaker 2: So that's you.
- 34:32Speaker 4: So you had a similar Tom Brady mindset, like preseason
- 34:36Speaker 4: Week one playoffs playing, it's.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Playing and again he was a low round draft pick.
- 34:43Speaker 4: Okay, so maybe maybe the mentality when you when when
- 34:47Speaker 4: you're in college and you and people are thinking that
- 34:50Speaker 4: you're good, and you're starting to think that you're good too,
- 34:52Speaker 4: and all of a sudden, when the draft go they
- 34:55Speaker 4: call this name, they call this name, they call this name.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Then they talk about, well we'll call you back tomorrow
- 35:00Speaker 4: and you'll get that call the next day. And you're
- 35:03Speaker 4: getting ready to go into camp and all these and
- 35:05Speaker 4: I'm looking at some dudes, I'm like thinking that all
- 35:07Speaker 4: these dudes came before me.
- 35:09Speaker 2: All these dudes. You're saying, this guy is better than me.
- 35:12Speaker 2: This ain't gonna work. It's it's I'm telling.
- 35:15Speaker 4: You, I don't see how you could go into it
- 35:19Speaker 4: without that mindset, because if you do, you better be
- 35:23Speaker 4: a super superstar. I wasn't a super superstar. I had
- 35:28Speaker 4: to build my my name, my reputation, what I could
- 35:32Speaker 4: do on the field. So that and that's stayed with you,
- 35:35Speaker 4: That stayed with me. I was hungry every single year.
- 35:38Speaker 2: That makes sense. That makes sense, And I'm curious.
- 35:41Speaker 7: I would like to look it up. Maybe maybe Max
- 35:43Speaker 7: can look it up for us.
- 35:44Speaker 5: But did Tom Brady play in any preseason games his
- 35:47Speaker 5: the end of his career?
- 35:50Speaker 7: He did remember him Okay, okay, at least thinking like
- 35:54Speaker 7: what are.
- 35:55Speaker 4: I'm going to play at least a quarter and if nothing,
- 35:58Speaker 4: and maybe Max at half time. Yeah, And that was
- 36:02Speaker 4: just that was just the actual reality of.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Players.
- 36:08Speaker 4: Now do you have players? Are there players that don't
- 36:11Speaker 4: want to play in preseason? Absolutely? And today and today
- 36:14Speaker 4: I think they're not interested in it.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I don't think that's.
- 36:17Speaker 5: More management than the players actually like to me, those
- 36:21Speaker 5: players are an investment.
- 36:22Speaker 7: This is preseason.
- 36:23Speaker 5: I remember, I don't know how long ago, this was
- 36:26Speaker 5: probably ten years ago, whenever was it.
- 36:29Speaker 7: Jordie Jordie Nelson got hurt.
- 36:33Speaker 5: In a preseason game and you know, a meaningless game,
- 36:35Speaker 5: and he was out the rest of the season. He
- 36:37Speaker 5: did some kind of a I don't I can't even
- 36:38Speaker 5: remember the injury. But to me, those star players, you
- 36:42Speaker 5: protect them this time of year because what happens is
- 36:46Speaker 5: even though most of those kids that are out their
- 36:48Speaker 5: preseason are trying to, you know, make plays to make
- 36:52Speaker 5: the team.
- 36:53Speaker 7: That's that's the thing.
- 36:54Speaker 5: They're going to go that there are adrenalines high that they're
- 36:57Speaker 5: they're looking to make a name for themselves, are going
- 37:00Speaker 5: they hit hard, and you know, the chances of injuries occurring,
- 37:03Speaker 5: to me, skyrocket because there's those kids are wanting to
- 37:07Speaker 5: make a name for themselves.
- 37:08Speaker 4: I would, I would, I would, I would say this,
- 37:12Speaker 4: I'm games, I'm always I'm always going to be the
- 37:17Speaker 4: one trying to make I'm trying to make the team
- 37:20Speaker 4: every time I go out on the field.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Every time I go out on the That's a different mentality,
- 37:24Speaker 2: you know.
- 37:24Speaker 4: I'm I'm because I know Hollis. I know if Hollis
- 37:28Speaker 4: is playing, I know he's good. He's here, so I
- 37:31Speaker 4: know he's good. I'm not going to I'm not going
- 37:34Speaker 4: to make that mistake. But John Swain University of Miami.
- 37:41Speaker 4: He he had the audacity to say no, I won't
- 37:46Speaker 4: play this game today because my ankle's hurt.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Okay, who's going in.
- 37:52Speaker 4: I'm going in with the mindset thinking, bruh, you ain't
- 37:55Speaker 4: never gonna get back out here.
- 37:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and he never got back out.
- 37:59Speaker 7: It's a brutal it is.
- 38:00Speaker 2: I mean.
- 38:02Speaker 4: So if I'm not if for me, if I know
- 38:06Speaker 4: I got a job because a guy didn't want to
- 38:08Speaker 4: play because he said he was hurt, you think I'm
- 38:11Speaker 4: going to get out of the game. I'm not gonna
- 38:13Speaker 4: play in the game. I'm playing with with with a
- 38:16Speaker 4: cast with pins in my wrist because I'm not gonna
- 38:19Speaker 4: not play because Hollis is sitting right behind me waiting
- 38:21Speaker 4: on me to not get in the game.
- 38:25Speaker 6: Lord.
- 38:25Speaker 4: I mean again, I think that's just a different mentality
- 38:29Speaker 4: when you are Tom Brady Coachley when a low pick
- 38:33Speaker 4: and you ascend, so I think you always kind of
- 38:35Speaker 4: carry that chip, which I mean, honestly, it makes sense
- 38:38Speaker 4: and that's probably what should happen. So just moving on
- 38:41Speaker 4: the youth sports, there's an article that we got sent
- 38:45Speaker 4: earlier about one of our producers and it talked about
- 38:47Speaker 4: the AAU system and in back in the twenty eleven
- 38:52Speaker 4: there was an allegation or maybe a you know, conviction
- 38:56Speaker 4: of what have you about, you know, sexual abuse in
- 39:00Speaker 4: in the a you or youth sports, and then a
- 39:03Speaker 4: you made a pledge to do investigation, to do background
- 39:07Speaker 4: checks on coaches, to set standards. They even had a
- 39:09Speaker 4: rule that we'll talk about later that if a coach
- 39:12Speaker 4: was banned from one organization on one league, that he
- 39:16Speaker 4: would be banned from the AAU system in totality. But
- 39:21Speaker 4: what the article discovered in investigation is that they didn't
- 39:24Speaker 4: they weren't really doing the background checks. Several banded coaches
- 39:27Speaker 4: who were banning other leagues were still coaching within the
- 39:30Speaker 4: AAU systems and it and it just wasn't being upheld
- 39:35Speaker 4: or what they said wasn't being upheld as far as
- 39:37Speaker 4: what they do. And it brings a you know, an
- 39:40Speaker 4: interesting a point because I guess I don't know how
- 39:46Speaker 4: you would even try to make that claim or how
- 39:49Speaker 4: you would even try to do that or implement and
- 39:51Speaker 4: even execute that because everything is so fragmented, so even
- 39:56Speaker 4: within the you know, ancillary leagues and you know, the
- 40:00Speaker 4: little local leagues, and also within AU system because it's
- 40:04Speaker 4: so large, because you have you know, hundreds of thousands
- 40:07Speaker 4: of kids participating in anyone given time across various sports.
- 40:11Speaker 2: So and it brings up to a question. Something we've discussed.
- 40:15Speaker 4: Is like does youth sports do they need either state
- 40:20Speaker 4: wide governing bodies or should there just be a national
- 40:24Speaker 4: governing body which everybody is under. So, whether you're playing
- 40:27Speaker 4: rec league, whether you're playing within the circuits, should there
- 40:31Speaker 4: be like standardized governing bodies? I think I think it
- 40:35Speaker 4: should be. I think it should be statewide as a whole.
- 40:40Speaker 4: If you want to do national, that's fine, But if
- 40:43Speaker 4: you don't do local, national is not ever going to
- 40:47Speaker 4: have an impact. I can see that they're not going
- 40:49Speaker 4: to have an impact on leagues like leagues like that
- 40:54Speaker 4: we have here in West Virginia. They're not gonna Why
- 40:57Speaker 4: would they bother with that?
- 40:59Speaker 2: Right?
- 41:00Speaker 4: But if you have if you have local, I'll just
- 41:06Speaker 4: say state. If you have, the state is over overseeing it.
- 41:11Speaker 4: I think now everybody's accountable. We can still have a
- 41:16Speaker 4: board of coaches and presidents and all that kind of stuff,
- 41:19Speaker 4: but you are the one who is going to be blamed.
- 41:25Speaker 4: That board is going to be the one blamed if
- 41:28Speaker 4: something's not going on. And let me ask a different
- 41:30Speaker 4: question how do they execute that? Even on the state level.
- 41:34Speaker 4: So we're saying all youth sports, so we're saying, cheering,
- 41:37Speaker 4: they pass a track all this, and we're saying, we
- 41:40Speaker 4: got to go to each little community and now we're
- 41:43Speaker 4: going to be the governing body over all these fragment
- 41:46Speaker 4: and various sports.
- 41:47Speaker 2: How do you do that?
- 41:48Speaker 5: Couldn't you do something similar to the model that the
- 41:50Speaker 5: Girl Scouts and Boy Scouties like, they have national standards
- 41:54Speaker 5: that are there for all the organizations and then they
- 41:57Speaker 5: take those and they mold them in make them fit
- 42:00Speaker 5: to meet their needs at their state level. So you
- 42:03Speaker 5: have an extra layer of security.
- 42:04Speaker 7: You're set.
- 42:05Speaker 5: You have the national uh layer saying this, this is
- 42:08Speaker 5: our expectations, this is what you need to do to
- 42:11Speaker 5: run a clean program, and then the state has to
- 42:13Speaker 5: abide by those and then maybe make their own bylaws
- 42:15Speaker 5: and that.
- 42:15Speaker 4: But I think that the difference in that is that
- 42:17Speaker 4: they're all under one organization. The Youth Sports says it's
- 42:21Speaker 4: currently constructed, it's a bunch of different leagues.
- 42:25Speaker 2: So they are making their own ohesion within that.
- 42:29Speaker 4: So I'm saying, to your point, it could work if
- 42:31Speaker 4: we're saying it's one organization just spread across different counts.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you don't have to.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Play that league can be its own league. But but
- 42:42Speaker 4: I don't think you could even do it like that.
- 42:44Speaker 4: I think it has to be well everybody. To me,
- 42:47Speaker 4: I'm thinking to your point, maybe maybe a little bit different.
- 42:52Speaker 4: You have a governing body that is that sits above
- 42:57Speaker 4: and there's no coaches, no parents, none of that.
- 43:00Speaker 7: National sac yes, okay, state wisees.
- 43:04Speaker 10: All right, and and you follow their rules and then
- 43:11Speaker 10: there's an opportunity for them to or to receive a report.
- 43:16Speaker 4: I could say, Hollis is coaching at such and such place,
- 43:19Speaker 4: and we don't think that they are you. And this
- 43:22Speaker 4: question is how do you how do you execute and
- 43:25Speaker 4: implement that?
- 43:26Speaker 2: What does that look like?
- 43:27Speaker 4: Because I'm saying, like, if you say it's the w
- 43:29Speaker 4: v S SAC for youth sports, this is throw title
- 43:32Speaker 4: on it. But there's so many more youth sports than
- 43:36Speaker 4: there are high school teams.
- 43:38Speaker 2: There's so many more youth teams.
- 43:40Speaker 7: So I'm saying, like, every little community, and.
- 43:43Speaker 4: Then what's the incentive for this team, that team, that
- 43:46Speaker 4: team to be a part of this larger thing. You
- 43:49Speaker 4: see what I'm saying. The reason why you would have
- 43:52Speaker 4: to be parked, because then if you don't, if you
- 43:54Speaker 4: don't participate, you ain't got a place to play.
- 43:58Speaker 2: But you still need buy in from all these teams.
- 44:02Speaker 4: I understand that, yes, but we well no, not necessarily.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Their motive, our motive.
- 44:08Speaker 4: To have to to agree to it. Whatever that's being
- 44:13Speaker 4: put out there. If you put something out there, you
- 44:15Speaker 4: had control of all the school all their all the
- 44:18Speaker 4: football fields and stuff. Bro, we gotta follow you. I
- 44:22Speaker 4: see what you see. I'm saying so, I mean so
- 44:25Speaker 4: that the reality of where they practice, where they play
- 44:28Speaker 4: their home games are all on high school middle school fields.
- 44:32Speaker 4: And I can see that working for football. I still
- 44:35Speaker 4: have questions on how that's gonna work for cheering, how
- 44:37Speaker 4: that's gonna work for basketball, how they will work for baseball,
- 44:40Speaker 4: because there's even even as many football teams as we
- 44:42Speaker 4: think we have, it's so many more basketball and baseball teams.
- 44:47Speaker 5: Well, I think for me, the bigger point for me
- 44:50Speaker 5: is there were girls being abused, and that's a criminal charge.
- 44:54Speaker 5: And regardless of whether we have an AAU, national or statewide.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Level, somebody's accountable.
- 45:00Speaker 5: Somebody's accountable, and those people should legally, you know, be
- 45:03Speaker 5: taken to court. And whatever, you know, consequences are served
- 45:07Speaker 5: to them, should be served, you know, just like any
- 45:10Speaker 5: other sport, like you know, in college whenever we had
- 45:12Speaker 5: the scandal at Penn State. So you know, the bigger
- 45:16Speaker 5: point is if there is some type of abuse going
- 45:20Speaker 5: on with with with you know, some of these AAU leagues,
- 45:24Speaker 5: then wherever they happen, First of all, you need to
- 45:27Speaker 5: have a prevention of Everybody needs to be background checked.
- 45:30Speaker 5: And I know that doesn't prevent everything, but it could
- 45:32Speaker 5: help in the case that somebody jumped from one league
- 45:35Speaker 5: to another and they really didn't check out his background.
- 45:38Speaker 5: You know, that could have been prevented. Yeah, but you know,
- 45:41Speaker 5: it's not going to prevent every situation. We know that,
- 45:43Speaker 5: but at least it will help curb it.
- 45:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and I agree with you one hundred percent.
- 45:47Speaker 4: I guess my question is, and just trying to play
- 45:49Speaker 4: devil advocates, is that how do you execute it? Is
- 45:52Speaker 4: kind of the question that I have because again I'm
- 45:56Speaker 4: telling you, I've seen some of the most egregious things,
- 46:00Speaker 4: particularly as it pertains the football. I mean, I've seen
- 46:03Speaker 4: these these wacko coaches. I've seen one thing where they
- 46:06Speaker 4: were having kids jog up a like a heel on
- 46:10Speaker 4: like a street. It was a concrete in their cleats
- 46:13Speaker 4: and in their helmets. I've seen one thing where they're
- 46:15Speaker 4: clearly having the kids like not tackle correctly, leading with
- 46:19Speaker 4: their head. It's like you, these people don't need to
- 46:22Speaker 4: be coaching at all, right, But the question is is like,
- 46:26Speaker 4: how do you execute a governing body against you sports
- 46:31Speaker 4: when the nature of it, at least from some of
- 46:33Speaker 4: these coaching standpoint, is that they are free to do
- 46:36Speaker 4: whatever their volunteers. But I think, I think what what
- 46:40Speaker 4: what you could do in that volunteer process, which is
- 46:43Speaker 4: just saying if if I want to coach, I can
- 46:46Speaker 4: just say, hey, you know, I show up and walk
- 46:48Speaker 4: out on the field, bring my son and put them
- 46:51Speaker 4: out there, and next thing.
- 46:52Speaker 2: You know, I'm coaching.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Okay, regardless of what I know or don't know about football,
- 46:57Speaker 4: I'm coaching.
- 46:58Speaker 2: That's one of the problems.
- 47:01Speaker 4: But what I think to your point, I think what
- 47:03Speaker 4: should happen is it's just like if you're going to
- 47:07Speaker 4: coach in high school or college, you gotta take you
- 47:10Speaker 4: gotta take a you gotta take a class. I believe that,
- 47:13Speaker 4: you know, I think I think that I think that
- 47:14Speaker 4: they need to take those classes and pass them and
- 47:19Speaker 4: then become part of it.
- 47:21Speaker 5: And I agree, but then it's even harder to get
- 47:23Speaker 5: people to come out involved. You know that they're already
- 47:27Speaker 5: strapped to find people to come out and just coach,
- 47:30Speaker 5: whether they're qualified or not. And then you add that
- 47:33Speaker 5: piece to it unpaid, you know, then that's just going
- 47:36Speaker 5: to deter a lot more people to be involved.
- 47:39Speaker 7: In my opinion, Well.
- 47:40Speaker 4: And I think what happens too if we if we
- 47:42Speaker 4: if we structure have its so structured, then it almost
- 47:45Speaker 4: takes the community feel out of it as well. So
- 47:48Speaker 4: it's like it inhibits certain things. But I think that
- 47:50Speaker 4: we have to have some sort of standardization, whether we
- 47:54Speaker 4: get together as like a quasi governing body and saying, look,
- 47:58Speaker 4: we're going to have these rules. We're not necessarily going
- 48:02Speaker 4: to be like the quote unquote government bike but but.
- 48:06Speaker 2: We we as a collective that's a better word.
- 48:09Speaker 4: But I'll say this to trying to figure out if
- 48:14Speaker 4: we can get them to do that without paying. I
- 48:16Speaker 4: wouldn't make the case that most dads who are coaching
- 48:19Speaker 4: their son would pay for the class to be able
- 48:24Speaker 4: to be on the field with with with their son.
- 48:28Speaker 2: I think.
- 48:28Speaker 4: I think the coaches that the dads, or even just
- 48:32Speaker 4: the coaches who.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Are there who show up.
- 48:37Speaker 4: I think, at least for us, we've got coaches who
- 48:43Speaker 4: know they don't know, and will ask and they want
- 48:47Speaker 4: to know, and I think I think what we could
- 48:50Speaker 4: do is we could actually give them a class, create
- 48:53Speaker 4: a class that all coaches would have to take. But again,
- 48:58Speaker 4: I just don't I don't see that as the biggest issue.
- 49:00Speaker 4: The biggest issue is getting all the teams to work
- 49:04Speaker 4: together and to be under an authoritative body.
- 49:08Speaker 2: I think that's the issue.
- 49:09Speaker 4: I think you can get the coaches because you as
- 49:11Speaker 4: an organization could mandate that. But I think that getting
- 49:15Speaker 4: all these little ragtag teams together and saying, okay, you're
- 49:19Speaker 4: now under this governing body on a state and then
- 49:22Speaker 4: at a national level, that's the task. See I think, okay,
- 49:25Speaker 4: And to your point, the reason why that would be
- 49:28Speaker 4: challenging because I'm if I'm X program over here, I
- 49:33Speaker 4: want to play over there because we think we can
- 49:37Speaker 4: compete there, and we don't want to go over that
- 49:41Speaker 4: way because we don't we can't compete. Then the governing
- 49:43Speaker 4: body is going to be tasked with managing all these
- 49:47Speaker 4: issues and it would literally be endless, don't I don't
- 49:51Speaker 4: know that it could, Like I'm just trying to figure
- 49:54Speaker 4: out how I'm sure it can work.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, maybe just start with baby steps, you know, like,
- 49:59Speaker 5: first of all, makes sure that what was happening in
- 50:02Speaker 5: the article that you referred to with with the AAU
- 50:05Speaker 5: and and and the girls having you know, some some abuse,
- 50:08Speaker 5: you got to stop that, stop you know the other stuff. Yeah, yeah,
- 50:12Speaker 5: that that should be the first thing that that happens.
- 50:14Speaker 4: I think, even even with even with the background check,
- 50:17Speaker 4: I think that if you're if you're especially in the
- 50:21Speaker 4: AAU situations or travel or whatever you want to call it,
- 50:27Speaker 4: I think that there should not necessarily be a time
- 50:31Speaker 4: to where you could have you could have my daughter,
- 50:36Speaker 4: you and my daughter by by herself. You know, there
- 50:39Speaker 4: should not be a situation because we don't have a
- 50:41Speaker 4: locker room, you know, and and the only place we
- 50:46Speaker 4: have that you should be around them is on the court.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:50Speaker 5: Well, and you're not sure what the story it could
- 50:52Speaker 5: have even been sober. You know, you don't know if
- 50:54Speaker 5: people get their phones and you know, do things.
- 50:56Speaker 2: So yeah, that's a deep issues.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Even the two fun we got to close out here shortly,
- 51:02Speaker 4: but two fun topics, So two fun questions. So this
- 51:06Speaker 4: guy named d rich TV on Instagram he posed these
- 51:10Speaker 4: two questions. So I asked the first one, if you
- 51:13Speaker 4: had a son, would you rather for your son to
- 51:16Speaker 4: play be a Division one volleyball player or a Division.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Three basketball player. I'm gonna go Division three basketball player. Ye,
- 51:26Speaker 2: what do you say? Whatever? I mean?
- 51:27Speaker 5: I like basketball, I would go Division three basketball.
- 51:30Speaker 4: See I'm saying Division one volleyball because here's my thoughts.
- 51:35Speaker 4: If you're going particularly Division three basketball, that means you
- 51:39Speaker 4: lack the skill and you probably lack the metric because
- 51:42Speaker 4: you're not even getting Division two or junior college pond
- 51:48Speaker 4: in your Division one. I mean, but but but I
- 51:50Speaker 4: say it, but but here's the thing. If you're going
- 51:52Speaker 4: Division three, you lack the metric and you lack the
- 51:55Speaker 4: skill set probably or you're very very very deficient in
- 51:58Speaker 4: the metric and have some skill set, so you have
- 52:00Speaker 4: a lack. If you're a Division one athlete, normally you
- 52:04Speaker 4: have the metric and you have but you're playing volleyball.
- 52:10Speaker 4: I just don't know how many how many young boys
- 52:16Speaker 4: are out there looking to play volleyball.
- 52:19Speaker 7: ESPN schedule to see when the next volleyball. You don't
- 52:22Speaker 7: see much.
- 52:23Speaker 4: You got beach volleyball. That's huge, and you got no,
- 52:28Speaker 4: it's dude too. And then and then you have an Olympics.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Then you have the Olympics as opportunity. They're that good
- 52:40Speaker 2: they can play the Olympics.
- 52:41Speaker 9: I'm going to tell you right now, those guys, those
- 52:43Speaker 9: guys get into volleyball because they know the women that
- 52:46Speaker 9: are playing also.
- 52:49Speaker 4: And here's the thing. Have you ever been to a
- 52:51Speaker 4: men's volleyball game? You see ussy Charleston has a men's
- 52:55Speaker 4: volleyball team. Them dudes jump out of the sky. Oh
- 52:59Speaker 4: there they are skywalkers. These dudes are like six six
- 53:03Speaker 4: six eight and they are jumped. I mean they would
- 53:06Speaker 4: dunk basketballs. I'm telling these dudes got hops. These dudes
- 53:09Speaker 4: are super athletic. But that's a rare group of that's
- 53:12Speaker 4: a rare group of athletes, at least here it is.
- 53:15Speaker 2: Yeah, you know in the States.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Everybody, everybody don't most of the kids that are going
- 53:22Speaker 4: to be if you're going to be.
- 53:24Speaker 2: A football player, you're we're barely fitting that.
- 53:27Speaker 7: Do you not option out of that question?
- 53:35Speaker 4: But I'm saying, like I'm going to Penn State. I'm
- 53:37Speaker 4: gonna go to Miami. I'm not going Division three tracking
- 53:40Speaker 4: those that was moles. If I'm going to go to
- 53:42Speaker 4: the way Games, I'm going to the Clemson South Carolinas. Yea,
- 53:46Speaker 4: I'm going to l s U. I'm going to USC. Yeah,
- 53:50Speaker 4: I'm going to the good campuses. So yeah, if we're
- 53:53Speaker 4: gonna play, okay, Next question, similar question. So would you
- 53:57Speaker 4: rather for your son to be a Division three like superstar,
- 54:03Speaker 4: you know, very very good Hall of Fame type player,
- 54:06Speaker 4: or would you rather for them to go Division one
- 54:08Speaker 4: and be a bench warming basketball I want him to
- 54:11Speaker 4: I want him. I want to start him for him.
- 54:12Speaker 4: So you want Division three superstar, I'm.
- 54:15Speaker 7: Going Division three all the way.
- 54:18Speaker 4: I'm going Division one. Imagine my son going to DOUK.
- 54:22Speaker 4: Yeah you're sitting on the bench, but we in Duke,
- 54:24Speaker 4: we U s C. We're playing big time basketball. My mindset,
- 54:30Speaker 4: as as as as we already had an understand I
- 54:34Speaker 4: want I want him.
- 54:35Speaker 2: On the field.
- 54:35Speaker 4: If he ain't gonna be if he ain't gonna be
- 54:37Speaker 4: on the field, hey bro go do something else. Oh man, no,
- 54:40Speaker 4: he could. I mean he might be four or five
- 54:42Speaker 4: years he got five years of play. Now he might
- 54:45Speaker 4: be a senior and player. I'm going to the good
- 54:47Speaker 4: games I got.
- 54:50Speaker 2: I'm getting.
- 54:53Speaker 7: Worried about. Get out of it.
- 54:59Speaker 4: I'm going to I'm that's terrible, Big George Sam, I'm there.
- 55:09Speaker 4: We have a fun with this. That is, that is,
- 55:11Speaker 4: and he owned it.
- 55:14Speaker 2: I'm not. I don't want to track Division three. Ladies
- 55:19Speaker 2: and gentlemen, I apologize by mister Lewis. We're going to
- 55:23Speaker 2: the nice campus. He didn't he didn't really mean what
- 55:25Speaker 2: he says. He might get a little n I m
- 55:28Speaker 2: and who knows.
- 55:31Speaker 4: Alright, Leasa, we gotta get out of here. Yeah, he's
- 55:37Speaker 4: getting fired this week. Ladies and gentlemen, We'll be back
- 55:40Speaker 4: again next week. Thank you for joining
