- 0:21Speaker 1: It's Leggy yet yet yet on Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 0:27Speaker 1: two five. Yeah, Jeff Legwell time the top one hundred
- 0:32Speaker 1: will be out on Sunday. Leggy, can you just read
- 0:36Speaker 1: off all one hundred names for us in order right now?
- 0:40Speaker 1: Are you allowed to do that?
- 0:43Speaker 2: That probably would go against policy? The policy? Well, I
- 0:48Speaker 2: don't know, maybe if I read it backwards or something.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Okay, can you can you give us one spoiler? Can
- 0:53Speaker 1: you give us like number seventy three? Who's number seventy
- 0:56Speaker 1: three in the.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Top one seventy three? Let's see, that's.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Scrolling? Scrolling?
- 1:04Speaker 2: Kevin Winston, Junior safety, Penn State.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Kevin Winston, Junior Safety, Penn State. That's a that's the
- 1:13Speaker 1: scoop that we got this afternoon here.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah, show Leggy, I do want you to acknowledge the
- 1:18Speaker 3: maturity it took meate to ask for seventy three.
- 1:22Speaker 2: No, it's a it's a big moment.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Not a bigger not a more popular number.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I know ols seventy three Kevin Winston, junior safety from
- 1:32Speaker 1: Penn State. Uh leg give us a Give us a
- 1:35Speaker 1: recipe for the Denver Broncos who said they're they're taking
- 1:38Speaker 1: a back in this draft. We know that they're not
- 1:41Speaker 1: taking a back. They're taking a back, but give us
- 1:46Speaker 1: a recipe. How did the Broncos ace this draft?
- 1:50Speaker 2: Well, they could get a little help. You know, if
- 1:53Speaker 2: people go a little quarterback nutty above them, I think
- 1:57Speaker 2: that brings down, you know, a really good player to
- 2:03Speaker 2: them in the first So you sort of take the
- 2:06Speaker 2: highest graded player in the first and then you know, second,
- 2:10Speaker 2: third round, then you're looking for a back end there
- 2:14Speaker 2: and then this very very very deep class of backs,
- 2:18Speaker 2: they will probably get a back graded a half around
- 2:23Speaker 2: or a full round above where they actually take them.
- 2:27Speaker 2: So to me, that's the sweet spot. You know, if
- 2:30Speaker 2: they come away with a really quality graded player, if
- 2:34Speaker 2: they stay at twenty, because I would think they, like
- 2:38Speaker 2: every other team in the league that I've spoken to,
- 2:41Speaker 2: probably have somewhere between fourteen and twenty first round grades,
- 2:47Speaker 2: so you know they're right on the edge, so they
- 2:50Speaker 2: need they need somebody or a couple somebodies above them
- 2:56Speaker 2: to take a player they don't have graded in the
- 2:58Speaker 2: first round, or aquarterback or two, you know, position they
- 3:02Speaker 2: don't need. And then you know quality player in the
- 3:05Speaker 2: first round, and then you know, you work the middle
- 3:10Speaker 2: of the board, which is really the strength of this draft,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and then you come away with with guys who have
- 3:17Speaker 2: the chance to make the roster as rookies on a
- 3:20Speaker 2: playoff team.
- 3:22Speaker 3: All right, you asked the gentleman assembled on Thursday that,
- 3:26Speaker 3: being the Peyton and Peyton crew, how many first round
- 3:29Speaker 3: grades they seem to have you throughout the number one
- 3:32Speaker 3: seventeen eighteen? Sean and George I think it was Sean
- 3:36Speaker 3: mainly answered that that was about what they thought they
- 3:38Speaker 3: had as well, but he thought that was to an
- 3:41Speaker 3: advantage for them. Why did he think he had an
- 3:43Speaker 3: advantage there because of that?
- 3:46Speaker 2: I think Sean routinely believes that they you know, they
- 3:50Speaker 2: evaluate the prospects their own way, so that they're seventeen eighteen,
- 3:57Speaker 2: nineteen first round grades aren't going to be what everybody
- 4:01Speaker 2: else's are, So I think he believes they will get
- 4:04Speaker 2: a I think he believes they will get a first
- 4:07Speaker 2: round player in there if they stay put. And I
- 4:11Speaker 2: think that's why they feel that way. And again, this
- 4:14Speaker 2: is a really sturdy draft in rounds two through five,
- 4:18Speaker 2: so you don't want to give up too much real
- 4:22Speaker 2: estate in there, you know, to move around, because that
- 4:25Speaker 2: is really the guts of this draft and where you
- 4:29Speaker 2: can find some really good players because the grades will
- 4:33Speaker 2: be so similar over two and three rounds, which you
- 4:37Speaker 2: don't see very often, not like this year.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Leckie. My view of the Pittsburgh Steelers right now is
- 4:44Speaker 1: they have to take a quarterback. I think they're almost
- 4:47Speaker 1: cornered into having to take a quarterback now in this draft.
- 4:52Speaker 1: How do the events of the last few weeks in
- 4:54Speaker 1: Pittsburgh sort of landing in this spot. How does that
- 4:58Speaker 1: increase the per perhaps trade value of Denver's twentieth overall selection,
- 5:04Speaker 1: one pick above Pittsburgh. Do you think the Broncos will
- 5:08Speaker 1: be getting a lot of calls, Nate, I.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Think they will if it unfolds that, you know, say
- 5:14Speaker 2: cam Ward goes one or two or three, you know whatever, Yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 2: in there and then no quarterbacks come off the board.
- 5:24Speaker 2: You know, as it goes through picks fourteen, fifteen, sixteen,
- 5:29Speaker 2: then I think their phone really heats up, because I
- 5:34Speaker 2: don't know too many people in the league who would
- 5:37Speaker 2: you know, bank that they know what the Steelers are
- 5:39Speaker 2: going to do in any draft year, let alone this one,
- 5:42Speaker 2: because it's such a such a sort of a closed
- 5:46Speaker 2: door team. You know, they've done it, you know, the
- 5:49Speaker 2: same way, their way for so long. So I think
- 5:52Speaker 2: if Ward goes early as everybody expects, and then not
- 5:57Speaker 2: another quarterback comes off the board, you know, if they
- 6:00Speaker 2: get past you know the Saints say, and no other
- 6:04Speaker 2: quarterbacks are coming off the board, and I know teams
- 6:08Speaker 2: that have mocked it that that have that scenario coming
- 6:11Speaker 2: up quite a bit, then I think the Broncos pit
- 6:15Speaker 2: becomes a little more popular. And you know again I
- 6:19Speaker 2: I you know, if it's one of those teams at
- 6:22Speaker 2: the top of the second round, you know, I think
- 6:26Speaker 2: then if you're the Broncos, you don't do any deal
- 6:29Speaker 2: without that second round pick included.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Right now, it reports around the Giants are that their
- 6:37Speaker 1: their quarterback interest is heating up. Who knows if Mara
- 6:40Speaker 1: went downstairs and said, uh, we need to be taking
- 6:43Speaker 1: this more seriously, but they seem to be doing further
- 6:46Speaker 1: due diligence on quarterbacks, which it feels late, but hey,
- 6:49Speaker 1: get all the information you possibly can and then we
- 6:52Speaker 1: know what the Satan situation is with Derek Carr. As
- 6:55Speaker 1: you talk to people around the league and get your
- 6:57Speaker 1: sense of this draft, where do you think the Giants
- 7:01Speaker 1: and the Saints are at right now in their pursuit
- 7:04Speaker 1: of a quarterback?
- 7:05Speaker 3: And before you answer, can you add this in? Did
- 7:08Speaker 3: you see the Chefter report today about not feeling good
- 7:11Speaker 3: about the Saints basically for Shador about not feeling good Yeah,
- 7:17Speaker 3: he said he doesn't like it for with the Saints.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you know again that's those are the things
- 7:24Speaker 2: that are out there right now. Now again, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: the fitting and the misdirection really picks up here in
- 7:31Speaker 2: the next week or so. But I think a lot
- 7:34Speaker 2: of those you know, Cleveland, New York Titans, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 2: I think they're there. They have to do the due
- 7:40Speaker 2: diligence to take the quarterback at the top of the
- 7:44Speaker 2: second round, you know two, and I think you know,
- 7:48Speaker 2: anybody beyond ward. I think those thirty third, thirty fourth,
- 7:54Speaker 2: thirty fifth picks are where guys will truly be graded,
- 7:59Speaker 2: whether anybody he ever admits it or not. And I
- 8:01Speaker 2: think we're seeing an indication of that by Jackson Dart,
- 8:07Speaker 2: you know, now, saying he will not be at the
- 8:10Speaker 2: draft in Green Bay. So I you know again, I
- 8:13Speaker 2: think I think the Giants in particular are doing due diligence.
- 8:17Speaker 2: They've talked to quarterbacks that are well down the board,
- 8:21Speaker 2: so they're they're looking at that thirty fourth pick, I
- 8:25Speaker 2: think as a potential quarterback pick if they like somebody
- 8:30Speaker 2: enough to do it there, all.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Right, I see, I wondered about that. I've said, leady, Look,
- 8:37Speaker 3: I told you lunch, I think I think those teams
- 8:40Speaker 3: are all thinking about these guys on the second go round,
- 8:43Speaker 3: and I think it's fascinating. So you don't think with
- 8:46Speaker 3: what you just said there the dark could somehow how
- 8:48Speaker 3: about this, what's the likelihood if any dark could supplant
- 8:53Speaker 3: Shadoor is the second quarterback taken?
- 8:56Speaker 2: You know, I don't, you know, Andy, I never say
- 8:59Speaker 2: that when it comes to the draft, because when the
- 9:02Speaker 2: picks are getting made, then you finally finally see where
- 9:06Speaker 2: everybody really stands. And you know, with a quarterback, nothing
- 9:11Speaker 2: ever surprises me, you know, last year was a stunning
- 9:15Speaker 2: turn of events. I never thought in my career I
- 9:17Speaker 2: would see a six quarterback first round, and yet we
- 9:21Speaker 2: saw it. And not only did we see it, we
- 9:23Speaker 2: saw it in the first twelve pix of the draft.
- 9:25Speaker 2: So I don't I would never say never with a quarterback,
- 9:29Speaker 2: but I personally have not spoken to anybody who would
- 9:34Speaker 2: put Jackson Dart in front of Shador. But that doesn't
- 9:37Speaker 2: mean they don't really think that behind closed doors.
- 9:40Speaker 1: So so, Jeff, you'res what you're saying right now is
- 9:43Speaker 1: you don't believe there is a team that is willing
- 9:46Speaker 1: to retire the idea of Shador being the number two quarterback.
- 9:52Speaker 2: What happened to get you?
- 9:55Speaker 3: LEGI You're like, oh you got Jeff laughing. Dad, Yes,
- 10:03Speaker 3: some little guy. I didn't like you so much, but
- 10:05Speaker 3: Jeff liked it.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Perhaps it's too soon to use that show topical.
- 10:11Speaker 3: No topic, that's that's right, Nate Krekman's wheelhouse.
- 10:14Speaker 1: No, there we go.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Hey, I'll tell you what it's throw on the quarterbacks.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Let me ask this and Nate can have his good laugh.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Well done, sir, you did a good Jeff, pack yourself
- 10:23Speaker 3: on the back. Thank you, Because I've not heard Jeff
- 10:25Speaker 3: laugh like that a while real quick. It was interesting
- 10:28Speaker 3: because you know, get Up today was all about is
- 10:31Speaker 3: the league getting tired of Aaron Rodgers? You know? And
- 10:34Speaker 3: I think, what what's making its rounds? Yes? Well, in
- 10:37Speaker 3: what's making its rounds? And I'm sure Jeff heard it, Nate,
- 10:39Speaker 3: you probably heard it going on the Pat McAfee show
- 10:43Speaker 3: and growsing about the fact that they flew him out
- 10:45Speaker 3: there to tell him they were going in a different direction.
- 10:47Speaker 3: And then everybody dug up a tweet from twenty thirteen
- 10:50Speaker 3: or whatever where he said, face to face is always
- 10:53Speaker 3: better than a phone call. Is the league in fact
- 10:57Speaker 3: over Rogers? And is that why the Steelers are becoming
- 11:00Speaker 3: the hot landing spot for Shador or whatever quarterback falls?
- 11:06Speaker 2: Well, I mean his options are limited. You know, who
- 11:09Speaker 2: who would sign him at this point is a limited field,
- 11:13Speaker 2: and he has made it limited. I mean he didn't
- 11:16Speaker 2: he didn't visit or discuss this with many teams. And
- 11:21Speaker 2: you know, to my knowledge, Pittsburgh was you know, sort
- 11:23Speaker 2: of the one he went out of his way to visit.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And you know, I think Mike Tomlin is generally regarded
- 11:30Speaker 2: as a head coach who could handle most any situation.
- 11:34Speaker 2: So I think that's why you see all of the
- 11:36Speaker 2: talk right now until there's some kind of you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: ending to this that he ends up in Pittsburgh, but
- 11:44Speaker 2: it's in the Steelers. That doesn't preclude you from using
- 11:48Speaker 2: that pick on a quarterback. I mean that, you know,
- 11:50Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers is not your long term solution, you know,
- 11:54Speaker 2: down the road. But now I think it's funny because
- 11:58Speaker 2: I you know, had they done it with a phone call,
- 12:01Speaker 2: I would bet you anything he would have gone on
- 12:03Speaker 2: the show and said, I can't believe they did it
- 12:05Speaker 2: with a phone call.
- 12:06Speaker 3: So said he said he'd been going the exact different way.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's yeah.
- 12:13Speaker 2: No, I mean it's just you know, and look, I know,
- 12:16Speaker 2: you know, I'm I'm in the business and I've conducted
- 12:19Speaker 2: interviews and I've published quotes when people have said stuff
- 12:22Speaker 2: like that, when in my heart, I think you you
- 12:25Speaker 2: would have said it the other way, just to make
- 12:28Speaker 2: a point that you don't like them, you know, instead
- 12:30Speaker 2: of just saying I don't like them, I didn't like
- 12:32Speaker 2: my experience there. You you sort of make up a
- 12:36Speaker 2: a grievance, uh of why you don't like them.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, it's the old one. Well, I was going to
- 12:43Speaker 1: break up there anyway, but I would have done.
- 12:45Speaker 3: It in person.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Kind of move right there. Yeah, it's it's just sour
- 12:48Speaker 1: grapes coming out of Aaron Rodgers right there. Uh, Leggy,
- 12:52Speaker 1: you taking a look at the very top of this draft?
- 12:55Speaker 1: What what is your sense right now? Is there any
- 12:57Speaker 1: world in which Cleveland Let's Travis Hunter get beyond them?
- 13:00Speaker 1: Do you think Andrew Berry really views him more as
- 13:03Speaker 1: a receiver rather than a corner. Is it fata complete
- 13:08Speaker 1: that it will then be Abdul Carter going three to
- 13:10Speaker 1: the Giants? Is it sort of like the draft really
- 13:13Speaker 1: starts at number four with New England? What is your sense?
- 13:16Speaker 1: Give me the the Jeff Legwold mock draft sense of
- 13:19Speaker 1: this whole thing.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Well, again, it's just does the quarterback invade the grades?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Because the top graded players, you know, and nothing is
- 13:30Speaker 2: unanimous as we know, but if you were doing consensus polling, Hunter,
- 13:36Speaker 2: Carter Jenty are probably the three top players on the board.
- 13:41Speaker 2: So yeah, and I do think the draft probably really
- 13:44Speaker 2: starts at four, but the three best football players, regardless
- 13:51Speaker 2: of position, on top of the board are probably those three.
- 13:57Speaker 2: If you were talking to people, you know around the leg.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And in service of that thought, though, Leggie, could you
- 14:03Speaker 1: see New England just saying Ashton Genti's too good. We
- 14:07Speaker 1: can't let him get past us.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Yeah, if if he's not off the board already, right,
- 14:14Speaker 2: I do know they they have worked the top tackles,
- 14:19Speaker 2: you know, big time. They've been working that aisle of
- 14:24Speaker 2: the draft, and the top tackles are worth that pick.
- 14:29Speaker 2: So I think, you know, they may be the one
- 14:31Speaker 2: who sort of brings the uh composure route to the
- 14:36Speaker 2: whole thing that they just take the degraded player they
- 14:40Speaker 2: need the most there, but you know, because the top
- 14:43Speaker 2: tackle would be worth their pick. So again, you know,
- 14:47Speaker 2: it's just you know, we all we worked this over
- 14:51Speaker 2: for so many weeks lead up to it. But New
- 14:56Speaker 2: England is probably the start of sort of the the
- 15:00Speaker 2: graded player draft. And if Cleveland, you know, if cam
- 15:05Speaker 2: Ward goes one, if Cleveland let Travis Hunter go by,
- 15:10Speaker 2: I mean, then you're not trying very hard at the
- 15:13Speaker 2: NFL draft.
- 15:14Speaker 3: All right before we let you go. And I know
- 15:16Speaker 3: we'll talk to you Monday when we officially have the
- 15:18Speaker 3: top one hundred. We're all excited. I saw an article
- 15:22Speaker 3: on your fine website. Saying, well, the question pose anyway,
- 15:26Speaker 3: was do mock drafts affect the NFL draft and how
- 15:29Speaker 3: these guys think, Legy, you're a mock draft guy in
- 15:33Speaker 3: certain situations. Do mock drafts affect how NFL front offices
- 15:37Speaker 3: get ready to do business?
- 15:40Speaker 2: No, I mean they conduct them in house just to
- 15:43Speaker 2: work all the scenarios. They do it to prepare for
- 15:47Speaker 2: if everybody does this and this and this. But most
- 15:51Speaker 2: NFL teams believe they have a better idea of what
- 15:54Speaker 2: their peers are going to do because they either know
- 15:57Speaker 2: people that work at the other teams have been in
- 16:00Speaker 2: draft room of the other teams, you know, the philosophy
- 16:03Speaker 2: of a GM, and their analytics departments have taken apart
- 16:08Speaker 2: every other team's you know, draft history. So they do
- 16:12Speaker 2: it in a different way than sort do we do
- 16:16Speaker 2: in the media, But they do do it. I don't
- 16:19Speaker 2: think it influences their picks. I think it more influences
- 16:22Speaker 2: what sort of the poor prospects think of where they're
- 16:26Speaker 2: going because they've read it so often. You know, if
- 16:31Speaker 2: you're a player that's seen in every mock draft for
- 16:33Speaker 2: three months, you're going to a certain team and then
- 16:35Speaker 2: they don't even call you on draft day and you
- 16:38Speaker 2: slide past that pick, then suddenly you're frustrated for something
- 16:44Speaker 2: that's totally out of your control. And I think that's
- 16:47Speaker 2: what it impacts is how these guys have to wait
- 16:51Speaker 2: through the draft to hear their names because they as
- 16:55Speaker 2: much as they say, they don't listen or don't look
- 16:58Speaker 2: everyone around them and looks.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I think it impacts all those
- 17:04Speaker 1: Food Johnson, all those football exactly, all those football people
- 17:07Speaker 1: the leg you just talked about, Yeah, they could give
- 17:09Speaker 1: a crap what anybody thinks on you know, Bleacher Reporter
- 17:13Speaker 1: or whatever. It's when the owner comes walking through the
- 17:16Speaker 1: door and says, Hey, I see as mock to this guy,
- 17:20Speaker 1: and I really like this dude. I think we should
- 17:22Speaker 1: go and take him right there. It is the Woody
- 17:24Speaker 1: Johnson's of the world. Those are the guys that get
- 17:26Speaker 1: excited about mock drafts, and then somehow the football people
- 17:30Speaker 1: have to be able to talk the billionaire out of
- 17:32Speaker 1: their terrible idea.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Well, the two greatest examples of that in my time
- 17:38Speaker 2: Clent League are There's always been the story when Ken
- 17:41Speaker 2: Bearing owned the Seahawks that he actually brought the street
- 17:44Speaker 2: in Smith's magazine into the war room, and then Bud
- 17:49Speaker 2: Adams told Floyd Reeve and Jeff Fisher they had to
- 17:54Speaker 2: draft Vince Young, and the football people wanted them to
- 17:59Speaker 2: draft Jay Cub that year in some fashion. Yeah, those
- 18:04Speaker 2: are the two biggest owner imposition examples. I've I've ever heard,
- 18:10Speaker 2: you know, Pat Ball in my time around Pat Ball,
- 18:12Speaker 2: and he said the only time he went in to say, boy,
- 18:17Speaker 2: I really like us to get this player was Gary Zimmerman.
- 18:21Speaker 2: So you know, very good they all they all have
- 18:25Speaker 2: some desire to be impactful, but most of the good
- 18:29Speaker 2: owners know you better hire good people and let them
- 18:32Speaker 2: do the draft.
- 18:32Speaker 1: I mean, wasn't that how Bryce Young ended up going
- 18:34Speaker 1: over c J. Stroup? Yeah, Dave Tech was it was hot? Yeah,
- 18:37Speaker 1: the one Young? Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 3: So hey, real quick, Jeff, you just said something interesting there.
- 18:44Speaker 3: Holy cow, just kidd You said that Jeff Fisher and
- 18:49Speaker 3: Floyd Reeves wanted to draft Jay Color and obviously they didn't.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Is that why Shanian was so surprised he was there?
- 18:56Speaker 2: That's why Shanahan didn't. I actually wrote a story about
- 18:59Speaker 2: it later, so I Shanahan and the Broncos didn't have
- 19:03Speaker 2: to talk to Jake Cutler because the Titans knew they
- 19:07Speaker 2: weren't going to be able to take him, and they
- 19:09Speaker 2: had done all the interviews and due diligence with him
- 19:13Speaker 2: lead up to the draft, and Mike Shanahan and Jeff
- 19:15Speaker 2: Fisher are the closest to friends. And that's how uh
